Hello, friends. 00:00:18.31\00:00:19.65 Welcome once again to You Can Write A Song. 00:00:19.68\00:00:21.42 My name is John Lomacang. 00:00:21.45\00:00:22.78 Thank you for taking the time to tune in again. 00:00:22.82\00:00:25.69 And this program is an exciting one 00:00:25.72\00:00:27.86 because you may have heard about rhyme like, 00:00:27.89\00:00:31.93 Mary Had A Little Lamb, and the list goes on and on. 00:00:31.96\00:00:34.93 Rhythm is so much a part of life. 00:00:34.96\00:00:36.70 If your heart is ever out of rhythm, it's arrhythmia. 00:00:36.73\00:00:39.67 Everything in our planet, 00:00:39.70\00:00:41.04 in our cycle of sun going up 00:00:41.07\00:00:42.70 and sun going down is all based on rhythm. 00:00:42.74\00:00:45.31 And the person that is going 00:00:45.34\00:00:46.68 to be a part of our program today, 00:00:46.71\00:00:48.44 the main focus, our guest is none other than Lanny Wolfe. 00:00:48.48\00:00:52.15 And I can't think of anybody else 00:00:52.18\00:00:53.65 that knows about rhythm in the way 00:00:53.68\00:00:55.18 that you have over the years. 00:00:55.22\00:00:56.55 Thank you for coming. Thank you, John. 00:00:56.58\00:00:57.92 It's good to be here. 00:00:57.95\00:00:59.29 What are we going to learn today? 00:00:59.32\00:01:00.66 We're going to learn so many different rhyme schemes... 00:01:00.69\00:01:02.12 Okay. 00:01:02.16\00:01:03.49 And how to use them, and the importance of rhyme 00:01:03.53\00:01:05.19 and rhyme scheme. 00:01:05.23\00:01:06.80 I'm astonished that one of my students, 00:01:06.83\00:01:10.13 worship pastor did a project, great singer. 00:01:10.17\00:01:14.07 And when he came to me to start taking song, 00:01:14.10\00:01:17.01 he had no concept of rhyme. 00:01:17.04\00:01:20.08 I was shocked to think that here's an adult 00:01:20.11\00:01:23.31 who made a project that was a good project, 00:01:23.35\00:01:26.11 and wrote the songs, had no concept of rhyme. 00:01:26.15\00:01:29.28 So it's amazing how many people don't really understand rhyme, 00:01:29.32\00:01:32.52 they're going to learn about it today. 00:01:32.55\00:01:33.89 Well, sit back friends and hit the record button right now, 00:01:33.92\00:01:36.06 because when this program is over, 00:01:36.09\00:01:38.39 you will think rhyme in the proper way 00:01:38.43\00:01:40.36 and then you will be able to write a song. 00:01:40.40\00:01:43.63 It's going to be an exciting program. 00:01:43.67\00:01:45.07 Hit the record button right now. 00:01:45.10\00:01:46.57 I would like to talk about a very important aspect 00:01:51.94\00:01:54.28 of songwriting, rhyme, and what I call Rhyme Time. 00:01:54.31\00:01:58.18 In a previous session, 00:01:58.21\00:01:59.55 I talked about the A, A, A, A' prime chorus format, 00:01:59.58\00:02:05.05 in which the first three lines are all the same, 00:02:05.09\00:02:08.46 and the fourth is an extension 00:02:08.49\00:02:10.79 or completion of a thought of the first three lines 00:02:10.83\00:02:14.16 as in Greater is He that is in me, 00:02:14.20\00:02:17.53 Greater is He that is in me, 00:02:17.57\00:02:19.63 Greater is He that is in me than He that is in the world. 00:02:19.67\00:02:24.37 Today, I would like to discuss other formulas 00:02:24.41\00:02:27.31 for both verses and choruses 00:02:27.34\00:02:29.38 of a song with respect to rhyme. 00:02:29.41\00:02:32.61 Rhyme is a repetition of similar sounds 00:02:32.65\00:02:36.15 of two or more words, 00:02:36.18\00:02:38.05 most often used for effect in the final positions of lines 00:02:38.09\00:02:41.72 or poems and songs. 00:02:41.76\00:02:43.53 For example, day, hay, lay, 00:02:43.56\00:02:46.83 may, play, say, tray, way, etc. 00:02:46.86\00:02:50.37 If the first word is one syllable, 00:02:50.40\00:02:53.47 the ideal rhyme for the second would also be one syllable. 00:02:53.50\00:02:57.51 However, the second word could have more syllables 00:02:57.54\00:03:00.84 than the first as in the first word day, 00:03:00.88\00:03:03.95 and the second word, obey. 00:03:03.98\00:03:06.65 Also, the second or rhyming word 00:03:06.68\00:03:09.55 doesn't have to be spelled the same way as the first word. 00:03:09.58\00:03:12.49 Just sound the same. 00:03:12.52\00:03:14.02 For example, go, G-O, show, 00:03:14.06\00:03:17.19 S-H-O-W, toe, T-O-E, 00:03:17.23\00:03:21.00 same sound, different spelling. 00:03:21.03\00:03:24.37 From the time all of us were small children, 00:03:24.40\00:03:27.84 we were introduced to the idea of rhyme 00:03:27.87\00:03:29.67 in the form of nursery rhymes. 00:03:29.70\00:03:32.47 Mary had a little lamb, its fleece was white as snow, 00:03:32.51\00:03:35.94 and everywhere that Mary went, the lamb was sure to go. 00:03:35.98\00:03:39.31 The itsy bitsy spider crawled up 00:03:40.38\00:03:42.78 the water spout down came the rain, 00:03:42.82\00:03:45.89 and washed the spider out. 00:03:45.92\00:03:47.79 Out came the sun and dried up all the rain 00:03:47.82\00:03:50.73 and the itsy bitsy spider went up the spout again. 00:03:50.76\00:03:54.23 Taking you back to elementary school. 00:03:54.26\00:03:56.77 Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. 00:03:56.80\00:04:01.20 All the king's horses and all the king's men 00:04:01.24\00:04:03.91 couldn't put Humpty together again. 00:04:03.94\00:04:06.88 So nursery rhymes 00:04:06.91\00:04:08.24 were our first introduction to poetry. 00:04:08.28\00:04:10.35 They helped us master new language 00:04:10.38\00:04:12.78 because they present a vocabulary 00:04:12.81\00:04:15.18 in a format that caught our attention 00:04:15.22\00:04:17.89 and helped us to remember and use tunes, 00:04:17.92\00:04:20.92 and repetition, and rhythm, and actions. 00:04:20.96\00:04:24.59 Rhyme and nursery rhymes gives a child the sense 00:04:24.63\00:04:27.90 of anticipating the sound of the end of a line 00:04:27.93\00:04:31.50 to come based on the end of a preceding line. 00:04:31.53\00:04:35.30 Just as rhyme gives nursery rhyme structure, 00:04:36.87\00:04:39.84 it helps to give a song structure 00:04:39.87\00:04:41.54 and helps to divide the song into sections, 00:04:41.58\00:04:44.31 which usually makes it easier for the listener 00:04:44.35\00:04:46.72 to not only digest the entire song, 00:04:46.75\00:04:49.62 but easier to remember the song broken down 00:04:49.65\00:04:52.25 into sections or verses, chorus, bridge etc. 00:04:52.29\00:04:57.86 In my early songwriting career, 00:04:57.89\00:04:59.63 I used to carry around a rhyming dictionary 00:04:59.66\00:05:02.40 to save me all the trouble from going 00:05:02.43\00:05:05.20 through the alphabet in my mind, 00:05:05.23\00:05:07.14 ar, bar, car, dar, far, har, lar, mar, nar, war, sar. 00:05:07.17\00:05:12.67 But now, with the internet access, 00:05:12.71\00:05:16.95 I go to rhyme zone, 00:05:16.98\00:05:18.88 rhymezone.com 00:05:18.91\00:05:23.85 You simply put in a word 00:05:23.89\00:05:25.22 that you want to find rhymes to, 00:05:25.25\00:05:26.89 it will give you one syllable words, 00:05:26.92\00:05:29.26 it will give you two syllable words, 00:05:29.29\00:05:31.36 three syllable rhymes. 00:05:31.39\00:05:32.93 It will also give you fake rhymes. 00:05:32.96\00:05:35.30 A fake rhyme is formed by words 00:05:35.33\00:05:38.33 with a similar but not identical sound. 00:05:38.37\00:05:41.90 Fake rhymes are sometimes called... 00:05:41.94\00:05:44.37 Here we go, loose rhymes, near rhymes, 00:05:44.41\00:05:47.81 half rhymes, lazy rhymes, slant rhymes, false rhymes, 00:05:47.84\00:05:52.85 imperfect rhymes, partial rhymes, 00:05:52.88\00:05:54.98 oblique rhymes and off rhymes. 00:05:55.02\00:05:57.49 They're all fake, okay? 00:05:57.52\00:06:00.09 An example of fake rhyme 00:06:00.12\00:06:01.59 is found in the verse of I feel good, 00:06:01.62\00:06:04.39 where the word book, 00:06:04.43\00:06:05.86 B-O-O-K is rhyming with the word good, G-O-O-D. 00:06:05.89\00:06:11.67 Now I'm on my way to heaven and I'm singing as I go, 00:06:11.70\00:06:14.84 I'm so glad my name is written in the book, 00:06:14.87\00:06:17.97 just to know His blood has cleanse med 00:06:18.01\00:06:20.14 and I'm ready now to go makes me want to shout, 00:06:20.18\00:06:22.94 "Hallelujah! 00:06:22.98\00:06:24.31 I feel good!" 00:06:24.35\00:06:26.21 There's a growing trend to use more 00:06:26.25\00:06:27.82 and more fake rhymes rather than strict rhymes nowadays. 00:06:27.85\00:06:31.85 This makes it easier for the writer 00:06:31.89\00:06:33.76 to be able to have a lot more choices to choose from, 00:06:33.79\00:06:37.09 in ending a certain line of a verse or chorus, 00:06:37.13\00:06:39.93 and giving the essence of sounding close to the word 00:06:39.96\00:06:44.03 they're trying to rhyme with, 00:06:44.07\00:06:45.53 but not to be hostage to a strict rhyme. 00:06:45.57\00:06:48.64 My writing style has always been to strive 00:06:48.67\00:06:52.14 to use strict rhyme, 00:06:52.17\00:06:53.84 sometimes called exact or rigid rhyme. 00:06:53.88\00:06:57.51 Structure or form of a verse or chorus 00:06:57.55\00:07:00.45 is always dictated by the rhyme scheme. 00:07:00.48\00:07:04.25 Before I talk about some examples 00:07:04.29\00:07:05.99 of some common rhyme scheme forms, 00:07:06.02\00:07:09.02 let me talk about writing a song with no rhyme scheme. 00:07:09.06\00:07:14.40 Sometimes called through composed, 00:07:14.43\00:07:17.57 no rhyme scheme would indicate 00:07:17.60\00:07:19.17 that none of the end phrases rhyme, 00:07:19.20\00:07:21.74 it can be tricky to pull off successfully in instances 00:07:21.77\00:07:24.97 where the no rhyme scheme techniques is used. 00:07:25.01\00:07:28.48 There must be more focus placed on the rhythm 00:07:28.51\00:07:31.75 and the flow of the lyrics. 00:07:31.78\00:07:33.52 This no rhyme scheme format often works 00:07:33.55\00:07:36.79 best with some well-known writing, 00:07:36.82\00:07:39.45 such as the Lord's Prayer, or John 3:16, 00:07:39.49\00:07:43.43 which are familiar and sacred in their original form. 00:07:43.46\00:07:48.06 For God 00:07:48.10\00:07:52.27 So loved 00:07:52.30\00:07:54.70 The world 00:07:54.74\00:07:59.57 That He gave 00:07:59.61\00:08:02.58 His only begotten Son 00:08:02.61\00:08:09.52 That whosoever 00:08:09.55\00:08:15.56 Believeth on Him 00:08:15.59\00:08:20.43 Should not perish 00:08:20.46\00:08:23.93 Should not perish 00:08:23.97\00:08:28.97 But they shall have 00:08:29.00\00:08:33.61 They shall have 00:08:33.64\00:08:36.75 Everlasting 00:08:36.78\00:08:41.95 Life 00:08:41.98\00:08:46.09 To even out the length of the lines, 00:08:46.12\00:08:47.79 I incorporated repetition as in, 00:08:47.82\00:08:50.39 should not perish, should not perish, 00:08:50.43\00:08:53.36 and they shall have, they shall have. 00:08:53.40\00:08:56.73 The most popular rhyme scheme form is probably A, 00:08:58.27\00:09:02.60 A, A, A, 00:09:02.64\00:09:05.37 where all the ends of every line rhyme. 00:09:05.41\00:09:09.81 Now, don't confuse this rhyme scheme, 00:09:09.84\00:09:12.28 A, A, A, A, 00:09:12.31\00:09:14.55 with that easy chorus rhyme scheme format 00:09:14.58\00:09:18.65 that we talked about earlier, which was A, A, A, A' prime, 00:09:18.69\00:09:23.16 where it refers to all the line being the same. 00:09:23.19\00:09:28.20 Now we're talking about just the last word 00:09:28.23\00:09:30.37 of the line rhyming. 00:09:30.40\00:09:31.73 An example of this would be illustrated by the song, 00:09:31.77\00:09:35.04 Surely the Presence. 00:09:35.07\00:09:37.01 Surely the presence of the Lord 00:09:37.04\00:09:41.74 Is in this place 00:09:41.78\00:09:44.41 I can feel His mighty power 00:09:44.45\00:09:48.35 And His grace I can hear 00:09:48.38\00:09:53.96 The brush of angels' wings 00:09:53.99\00:09:56.96 I see glory on each face 00:09:56.99\00:10:02.00 Surely the presence 00:10:02.03\00:10:05.83 Of the Lord is in this place 00:10:05.87\00:10:11.67 The end of each one of those lines rhymed. 00:10:11.71\00:10:14.68 Fresh Touch of Desire also illustrates the A, A, A, 00:10:16.34\00:10:20.55 A rhyme scheme. 00:10:20.58\00:10:22.65 There is a fresh touch 00:10:22.68\00:10:25.62 Of desire 00:10:25.65\00:10:29.06 In my soul 00:10:29.09\00:10:31.99 Today 00:10:32.03\00:10:34.36 There's a fresh touch 00:10:34.40\00:10:37.60 Of desire 00:10:37.63\00:10:40.34 To go 00:10:40.37\00:10:44.04 All the way 00:10:44.07\00:10:47.01 For I've made up in my mind 00:10:47.04\00:10:52.01 I'm gonna make it come 00:10:52.05\00:10:55.08 What may 00:10:55.12\00:10:58.15 There is a fresh touch 00:10:58.19\00:11:01.46 Of desire In my soul 00:11:01.49\00:11:07.23 Today Soul today 00:11:07.26\00:11:11.27 Though the A, A, A, 00:11:11.30\00:11:13.20 A rhyme scheme is a great writing technique, 00:11:13.23\00:11:16.17 you want to be cautious of your rhyme 00:11:16.20\00:11:18.37 sounding too forced or contrived. 00:11:18.41\00:11:21.11 For example, 00:11:21.14\00:11:22.88 to rhyme with scent you choose to in the next line 00:11:22.91\00:11:27.25 with to the store I went. 00:11:27.28\00:11:30.25 In conversation, 00:11:30.29\00:11:31.82 you would say I went to the store 00:11:31.85\00:11:34.92 and you would not say to the store I went. 00:11:34.96\00:11:38.46 So, we have a second rhyme scheme which is A, A, B, B. 00:11:38.49\00:11:43.06 Lines one and two rhyme, 00:11:43.10\00:11:44.80 while lines three and four share a different rhyme. 00:11:44.83\00:11:48.20 Favorite Lanny Wolfe song, 00:11:48.24\00:11:49.80 Jesus be the Lord of All illustrates 00:11:49.84\00:11:52.11 this rhyme scheme 00:11:52.14\00:11:54.14 In my heart are kingdoms 00:11:54.18\00:11:58.48 Of a world 00:11:58.51\00:12:01.32 That's all 00:12:01.35\00:12:02.82 My own Kingdoms 00:12:02.85\00:12:07.76 That are only seen By myself 00:12:07.79\00:12:13.63 And God alone 00:12:13.66\00:12:17.83 In the past 00:12:17.87\00:12:20.07 when I tried to rule my world 00:12:20.10\00:12:24.47 It just seemed to fall apart 00:12:24.51\00:12:29.61 So please, Jesus, 00:12:29.64\00:12:32.98 Be the Lord 00:12:33.01\00:12:36.05 Of all The kingdoms 00:12:36.08\00:12:39.22 Of my heart 00:12:39.25\00:12:43.73 The verse of Greater 00:12:43.76\00:12:45.09 is He also illustrates the A, A, 00:12:45.13\00:12:47.66 B, B rhyme scheme. 00:12:47.70\00:12:50.23 Satan's like a roaring lion Roaming 00:12:50.27\00:12:55.00 To and fro' Seeking 00:12:55.04\00:12:58.61 Whom he may devour 00:12:58.64\00:13:01.58 The Bible tells me 00:13:01.61\00:13:03.51 So Many souls have been 00:13:03.55\00:13:08.18 His prey To fall in some weak hour 00:13:08.22\00:13:12.89 But God has promised us today 00:13:12.92\00:13:16.49 His overcoming pow'r 00:13:16.52\00:13:20.40 You may have heard of this little song that God gave me 00:13:20.43\00:13:22.56 that illustrates the rhyme scheme A, A, B, B. 00:13:22.60\00:13:26.50 It's called More than Wonderful. 00:13:26.53\00:13:28.50 He promised us 00:13:28.54\00:13:30.31 That He would be a counselor 00:13:30.34\00:13:36.14 A mighty God and the Prince 00:13:36.18\00:13:40.25 Of Peace He promised us 00:13:40.28\00:13:45.09 That He would be a father 00:13:45.12\00:13:49.69 And would love us 00:13:49.72\00:13:51.66 With a love 00:13:51.69\00:13:53.06 That would not cease Well, 00:13:53.09\00:13:58.10 I've tried Him 00:13:58.13\00:13:59.77 And I've found His promises 00:13:59.80\00:14:02.14 Are true He's everything 00:14:02.17\00:14:06.78 He said that He would be 00:14:06.81\00:14:11.68 The finest words 00:14:11.71\00:14:13.28 I know could not begin 00:14:13.31\00:14:16.05 To tell Just how much Jesus 00:14:16.08\00:14:20.89 Really means to me 00:14:20.92\00:14:25.79 I want to talk about rhyme scheme 00:14:25.83\00:14:27.16 number three which is A, B, A, B. 00:14:27.20\00:14:30.53 So now, in a four line verse, 00:14:30.57\00:14:33.57 lines one and three share a rhyme 00:14:33.60\00:14:36.47 and lines two and four share a different rhyme. 00:14:36.50\00:14:39.61 The chorus of A Brand New Touch illustrates that. 00:14:39.64\00:14:42.68 Lord, you know I need 00:14:44.18\00:14:46.28 A brand new touch 00:14:46.31\00:14:50.55 My strength from yesterday 00:14:50.59\00:14:53.22 Is gone 00:14:53.25\00:14:57.69 But if you give me 00:14:57.73\00:14:59.46 Lord another touch 00:14:59.49\00:15:04.00 I'll have the strength 00:15:04.03\00:15:05.77 To carry on 00:15:05.80\00:15:10.41 That's A, B, A, B. 00:15:10.44\00:15:15.08 The verses of I Feel Good 00:15:15.11\00:15:17.45 also use the A, B, A, B rhyme scheme. 00:15:17.48\00:15:22.02 Oh, how well do I remember All the days I spent 00:15:22.05\00:15:26.45 In sin With no thought of doing All the things 00:15:26.49\00:15:29.62 I should But then the blessed Savior found me 00:15:29.66\00:15:33.76 And He gently took me 00:15:33.80\00:15:35.50 In Makes me want to shout Hallelujah! 00:15:35.53\00:15:38.33 I feel good! 00:15:38.37\00:15:40.50 So rhyme scheme number three is a very popular one. 00:15:40.54\00:15:43.00 Rhyme scheme number four is A, B, C, B. 00:15:43.04\00:15:48.91 So this means that lines one and three, 00:15:48.94\00:15:52.38 they don't rhyme, 00:15:52.41\00:15:53.95 but lines two and four do rhyme. 00:15:53.98\00:15:57.49 I love the, I feel good verse of, 00:15:57.52\00:16:00.42 Have a Nice Day with Jesus, 00:16:00.46\00:16:02.42 which incorporates this rhyme scheme. 00:16:02.46\00:16:05.23 You can wake up every morning 00:16:05.26\00:16:08.86 With a smile upon your face 00:16:08.90\00:16:12.43 Just to know the Lord 00:16:12.47\00:16:14.94 Has kept you one more day 00:16:14.97\00:16:19.51 And no matter 00:16:19.54\00:16:21.28 what the day may bring You can face it 00:16:21.31\00:16:24.81 with a smile For the Lord will walk Beside 00:16:24.85\00:16:29.68 You all the way 00:16:29.72\00:16:33.29 So that rhyme scheme was A, B, C, B 00:16:33.32\00:16:36.12 and the ends of the lines were face, day, 00:16:36.16\00:16:39.76 smile, way. 00:16:39.79\00:16:42.76 Just as you can't change horses in the middle of the stream, 00:16:42.80\00:16:45.73 you can't change rhyme schemes in the middle of a song. 00:16:45.77\00:16:49.57 Every verse has to maintain the same rhyme scheme. 00:16:49.60\00:16:53.94 In verse two of, have a nice day, 00:16:53.98\00:16:57.31 the ends of the lines are alright, 00:16:57.35\00:17:00.82 day, storm and say. 00:17:00.85\00:17:04.79 Anyone can sing when the sun is shining, 00:17:04.82\00:17:07.06 and everything seems to be alright. 00:17:07.09\00:17:09.72 But it's a different story 00:17:09.76\00:17:11.09 when you're talking about a rainy day. 00:17:11.13\00:17:13.56 Just let the Lord be your umbrella, 00:17:13.60\00:17:15.40 and He'll take you through the storm. 00:17:15.43\00:17:17.70 Give the world a smile and let them hear you say. 00:17:17.73\00:17:20.64 So the rhyme scheme for verse two was consistent 00:17:20.67\00:17:23.91 with a rhyme scheme of verse one. 00:17:23.94\00:17:26.68 Also, even though the rhyme scheme 00:17:26.71\00:17:28.74 for the verses of a song can be the same as the chorus, 00:17:28.78\00:17:33.55 most often they are different. 00:17:33.58\00:17:35.75 The same rhyme scheme for both verses 00:17:35.78\00:17:37.79 and chorus can sometimes feel to singsongy 00:17:37.82\00:17:41.09 or get too monotonous. 00:17:41.12\00:17:42.62 A different rhyme scheme 00:17:42.66\00:17:43.99 sometimes helps to give contrast. 00:17:44.03\00:17:47.26 And now, 00:17:47.30\00:17:48.63 one of my personal favorite rhyme schemes, 00:17:48.66\00:17:50.77 rhyme scheme number five is A, A, 00:17:50.80\00:17:53.97 what I call internal rhyme, 00:17:54.00\00:17:56.60 B on the third line, followed by A. 00:17:56.64\00:18:00.68 So we have lines one, two and four that rhyme, 00:18:00.71\00:18:04.35 but line three has two phrases 00:18:04.38\00:18:06.75 that rhyme internally with in line three. 00:18:06.78\00:18:09.95 Even from the start of my songwriting career at 18, 00:18:09.98\00:18:13.25 I wrote Only Jesus Can Satisfy Your Soul 00:18:13.29\00:18:16.62 that uses this favorite rhyme scheme 00:18:16.66\00:18:19.69 Only Jesus 00:18:19.73\00:18:23.06 Can satisfy 00:18:23.10\00:18:26.53 Your soul Satisfy your soul 00:18:26.57\00:18:31.37 And only 00:18:31.41\00:18:33.74 He can change your heart 00:18:33.78\00:18:38.61 And make you 00:18:38.65\00:18:40.15 whole 00:18:40.18\00:18:45.35 He'll give you peace 00:18:45.39\00:18:48.56 You never knew 00:18:48.59\00:18:51.66 Sweet love and joy and heaven, 00:18:51.69\00:18:57.43 Too For only Jesus 00:18:57.47\00:19:01.57 Can satisfy your soul 00:19:01.60\00:19:07.74 Using internal rhyme line three, 00:19:07.78\00:19:10.85 you don't always have to have lines one, 00:19:10.88\00:19:13.58 two and four be the exact same line, 00:19:13.62\00:19:16.38 but it works well when they are as in the chorus 00:19:16.42\00:19:19.25 of God's Wonderful People. 00:19:19.29\00:19:21.32 I love the thrill that I feel when I get together 00:19:21.36\00:19:26.76 With God's wonderful people Love 00:19:26.80\00:19:30.43 The thrill that I feel when I get together 00:19:30.47\00:19:34.20 With God's wonderful people 00:19:34.24\00:19:37.14 What a sight just to see 00:19:37.17\00:19:39.64 All the happy faces Praising God 00:19:39.67\00:19:44.05 In heavenly places Love the thrill 00:19:44.08\00:19:46.68 That I feel when I get together 00:19:46.72\00:19:49.68 With God's wonderful people 00:19:49.72\00:19:55.32 Notice lines one, 00:19:55.36\00:19:56.69 two and four are exactly the same, 00:19:56.73\00:19:59.53 and line three has that internal rhyme 00:19:59.56\00:20:03.03 with those two phrases. 00:20:03.06\00:20:04.87 And, in the same vein, 00:20:04.90\00:20:07.50 I keep falling in love with Him is pattern A, A, 00:20:07.54\00:20:11.84 internal rhyme line three and line four A, 00:20:11.87\00:20:15.81 I keep falling in love with Him. 00:20:15.84\00:20:17.98 I keep falling in love 00:20:18.01\00:20:20.22 With Him over 00:20:20.25\00:20:21.62 And over And over and over again 00:20:21.65\00:20:26.29 I keep falling in love 00:20:26.32\00:20:28.92 With Him over and over 00:20:28.96\00:20:31.09 And over and over again He gets sweeter 00:20:31.13\00:20:36.87 And sweeter as the days go by Oh, 00:20:36.90\00:20:40.67 What a love between my Lord 00:20:40.70\00:20:42.90 And I Just keep falling in love 00:20:42.94\00:20:45.91 With Him over and over And over 00:20:45.94\00:20:49.24 And over again 00:20:49.28\00:20:53.38 I guess you could say, 00:20:53.42\00:20:54.75 I keep falling in love with it over 00:20:54.78\00:20:57.05 and over and over again. 00:20:57.09\00:20:58.42 The it being rhyme scheme number five A, A, 00:20:58.45\00:21:02.56 internal rhyme B, A. 00:21:02.59\00:21:04.79 It shows up again in one of my favorite songs 00:21:04.83\00:21:07.56 that God has given me, Jesus We Crown You with Praise. 00:21:07.60\00:21:11.13 Jesus, 00:21:11.17\00:21:13.57 We crown You 00:21:13.60\00:21:16.30 With praise 00:21:16.34\00:21:21.98 Jesus, 00:21:22.01\00:21:24.61 We crown You 00:21:24.65\00:21:27.15 With praise 00:21:27.18\00:21:32.99 We love and adore You 00:21:33.02\00:21:38.89 Bow down 00:21:38.93\00:21:41.46 Before You Jesus, 00:21:41.50\00:21:47.20 We crown You 00:21:47.24\00:21:49.87 With praise 00:21:49.90\00:21:54.11 That was Brooklyn Tabernacle singing 00:21:54.14\00:21:55.68 That cut of that wonderful song. 00:21:55.71\00:21:57.98 Have a Nice Day with Jesus 00:21:58.01\00:21:59.71 uses the same rhyme scheme technique. 00:21:59.75\00:22:02.28 But notice the length of the two phrases 00:22:02.32\00:22:04.79 in line three don't have to be the same length as one, 00:22:04.82\00:22:08.62 two and four, 00:22:08.66\00:22:09.99 as long as both of them in line three 00:22:10.03\00:22:12.19 are approximately the same length 00:22:12.23\00:22:14.10 and or the same number of syllables, it works. 00:22:14.13\00:22:17.33 Have a nice day with Jesus 00:22:17.37\00:22:20.90 Have a nice day 00:22:20.94\00:22:24.04 Have a nice day with Jesus 00:22:24.07\00:22:28.04 Have a nice day 00:22:28.08\00:22:31.25 You may wish the sun would shine 00:22:31.28\00:22:33.25 A little bit brighter But when you've got the Lord 00:22:33.28\00:22:36.45 He'll make your load a lot lighter 00:22:36.48\00:22:40.26 So have a nice day with Jesus 00:22:40.29\00:22:44.09 Have a nice day 00:22:44.13\00:22:47.63 Let me call your attention to the chorus of the song 00:22:47.66\00:22:50.97 Someone is Praying for You. 00:22:51.00\00:22:52.73 Again, it's A, A, 00:22:52.77\00:22:54.54 internal rhyme B, A, or is it? 00:22:54.57\00:22:58.74 Someone is praying 00:22:58.77\00:23:02.78 For you 00:23:02.81\00:23:06.15 Someone is praying 00:23:06.18\00:23:09.42 For you 00:23:09.45\00:23:12.25 So when it seems you're all alone 00:23:12.29\00:23:17.43 And your heart would break in two Remember, 00:23:17.46\00:23:22.50 Someone 00:23:22.53\00:23:24.20 Is pray for you 00:23:24.23\00:23:29.94 I call that to your attention 00:23:29.97\00:23:31.31 because it feels like it's internal rhyme B 00:23:31.34\00:23:34.64 on the third line. 00:23:34.68\00:23:37.05 As in, so when it seems you're all alone, 00:23:37.08\00:23:40.18 and your heart would break in two, 00:23:40.22\00:23:41.95 but those does not rhyme with each other. 00:23:41.98\00:23:44.42 As a consideration, 00:23:44.45\00:23:45.79 let's say if I wanted line three 00:23:45.82\00:23:47.96 to be an official internal line rhyme B, 00:23:47.99\00:23:51.99 I could have written line three, 00:23:52.03\00:23:54.36 so when you're feeling sad and blue, 00:23:54.40\00:23:57.20 like your heart would break in two, 00:23:57.23\00:23:59.53 then we would have ended up 00:23:59.57\00:24:00.90 with the following ends of the lines, 00:24:00.94\00:24:03.57 you, you, blue, two, you. 00:24:03.61\00:24:07.48 And this is too much. 00:24:07.51\00:24:08.84 It's overkill of rhyme, 00:24:08.88\00:24:10.21 too much rhyme for short lines like this chorus. 00:24:10.25\00:24:13.72 An exception, 00:24:13.75\00:24:15.52 although I'm a stickler for strict rhyme, 00:24:15.55\00:24:18.29 let's look at the chorus of the song, 00:24:18.32\00:24:20.69 my house is full, but my field is empty. 00:24:20.72\00:24:25.13 The words are, my house is full, 00:24:25.16\00:24:27.06 but my field is empty. 00:24:27.10\00:24:28.96 Who will go and work for me today? 00:24:29.00\00:24:32.00 It seems my children all want to stay around my table, 00:24:32.03\00:24:35.60 but no one wants to work in my field. 00:24:35.64\00:24:38.24 Repeat last line, 00:24:38.27\00:24:39.67 no one wants to work in my field. 00:24:39.71\00:24:42.78 Well, this was such a powerful song 00:24:42.81\00:24:45.51 when I felt God was giving it to me. 00:24:45.55\00:24:48.18 It wasn't until a few years after I had written 00:24:48.22\00:24:52.09 it that a student in one of my songwriting classes 00:24:52.12\00:24:54.06 asked me if I was aware that there was no rhyme scheme 00:24:54.09\00:24:57.69 in these lyrics. 00:24:57.73\00:24:59.06 The last line is simply repeated. 00:24:59.09\00:25:00.93 I was shocked because 00:25:00.96\00:25:02.43 I never really even thought about it, 00:25:02.46\00:25:04.37 because the words in the chorus 00:25:04.40\00:25:06.17 were so anointed and given by the Lord, 00:25:06.20\00:25:09.44 that I basically wrote down 00:25:09.47\00:25:11.41 what He was speaking to me without filtering them 00:25:11.44\00:25:14.38 through any rhyme scheme consideration. 00:25:14.41\00:25:18.51 The bottom line is, 00:25:18.55\00:25:19.88 you don't tell God He has to follow 00:25:19.91\00:25:21.88 any of our songwriting rules. 00:25:21.92\00:25:24.72 Remember, because most songs are written 00:25:24.75\00:25:27.32 with some rhyme scheme format, 00:25:27.36\00:25:29.72 you run the best chance for your song 00:25:29.76\00:25:31.76 to be successful if you do likewise. 00:25:31.79\00:25:35.50 Your assignment for this session 00:25:35.53\00:25:38.03 is to write a chorus using the A, 00:25:38.07\00:25:42.40 A internal rhyme B rhyme scheme. 00:25:42.44\00:25:47.24 Now, if you'll just think back the following examples 00:25:47.28\00:25:50.68 that I've given you,
