Eisenhower, 00:02:24.67\00:02:27.64 I like Ike. 00:02:27.68\00:02:29.48 Ronald Reagan slogan was, let's make America great again. 00:02:29.51\00:02:33.92 Hope and change was the slogan for Barack Obama's campaign. 00:02:33.95\00:02:38.29 And Donald Trump's slogan is, make America great again. 00:02:38.32\00:02:42.86 Every successful company 00:02:42.89\00:02:45.29 that selling a product wants a slogan 00:02:45.33\00:02:48.76 that the public associates with their product. 00:02:48.80\00:02:51.47 Some of these slogans and products 00:02:51.50\00:02:53.84 that you're probably very familiar 00:02:53.87\00:02:55.54 with McDonald's, I'm loving it. 00:02:55.57\00:02:58.51 Have it your way, Burger King. 00:02:58.54\00:03:01.24 Its finger lickin' good 00:03:01.28\00:03:02.91 and you know that's Kentucky Fried Chicken. 00:03:02.94\00:03:06.11 It melts in your mouth and not your hand 00:03:06.15\00:03:09.25 and you know that's M&M's. 00:03:09.28\00:03:11.45 When you care enough to send the very best, Hallmark. 00:03:11.49\00:03:15.19 Nike, just do it. 00:03:15.22\00:03:17.86 Dunkin, America runs on Dunkin. 00:03:17.89\00:03:21.96 And like a good neighbor State Farm is there. 00:03:22.00\00:03:26.33 Maxwell House, 00:03:26.37\00:03:27.70 coffee is good to the last drop. 00:03:27.74\00:03:30.61 And the quicker picker upper, Bounty. 00:03:30.64\00:03:36.31 Wheaties has long been known for breakfast of the champions. 00:03:36.34\00:03:40.62 And they've always used that as an opportunity 00:03:40.65\00:03:43.32 to highlight Olympian champions. 00:03:43.35\00:03:45.82 And last and certainly not least, the few, 00:03:45.85\00:03:49.32 the proud, the Marines. 00:03:49.36\00:03:51.93 Now let's talk about songs. 00:03:51.96\00:03:54.46 In our popular culture of pop songs, 00:03:54.50\00:03:58.67 every song writer would love to have a song 00:03:58.70\00:04:03.17 that has a line 00:04:03.20\00:04:05.31 or what radio people call a hook 00:04:05.34\00:04:08.44 that people remember. 00:04:08.48\00:04:10.85 I'd like to call your attention to a few of these songs 00:04:10.88\00:04:14.38 that have had outstanding hooks. 00:04:14.42\00:04:17.49 The Beatles, I want to hold your hand. 00:04:17.52\00:04:20.76 Michael Jackson, beat it. 00:04:20.79\00:04:23.22 ABC, you know that's the Jackson Five. 00:04:23.26\00:04:26.06 Stayin' alive, the Bee Gees. 00:04:26.09\00:04:28.70 Aretha Franklin, RESPECT. 00:04:28.73\00:04:32.37 Elvis Presley, 00:04:32.40\00:04:33.74 you ain't nothin' but a hound dog. 00:04:33.77\00:04:35.60 And YMCA, whether you like it or hate it. 00:04:35.64\00:04:41.31 It's been going on so many times 00:04:41.34\00:04:44.75 that it's in your head 00:04:44.78\00:04:46.11 whether you want it there or not. 00:04:46.15\00:04:48.02 Neil Diamond, Sweet Caroline, and Pharrell Williams, 00:04:48.05\00:04:52.52 oh, he wrote this wonderful song 00:04:52.55\00:04:55.16 originally for a Disney kids movie. 00:04:55.19\00:04:58.96 But once we heard it, 00:04:58.99\00:05:00.33 we couldn't get it out of our head. 00:05:00.36\00:05:01.70 It's the happy song. 00:05:01.73\00:05:03.06 So why should a songwriter 00:05:03.10\00:05:05.03 be so concerned about repetition? 00:05:05.07\00:05:07.37 If you're a poet or writer, 00:05:07.40\00:05:09.64 and your poem or book gets published, 00:05:09.67\00:05:11.84 a reader has the luxury to read and reread 00:05:11.87\00:05:15.91 your poem or your book as many times 00:05:15.94\00:05:18.51 as he wants or needs to in order to get it. 00:05:18.55\00:05:20.75 But if you're a songwriter, your song gets 100 words 00:05:20.78\00:05:26.09 and if it's played on radio or TV, 00:05:26.12\00:05:28.69 you get three to four minutes, 00:05:28.72\00:05:30.83 you get one time to make an impact on the listener. 00:05:30.86\00:05:34.23 And so that's why it's so important 00:05:34.26\00:05:36.06 the repetition helps you to make that impact. 00:05:36.10\00:05:41.27 It is well, written in 1873 by Horatio Spafford, 00:05:41.30\00:05:45.54 the chorus focuses on one idea. 00:05:45.57\00:05:48.28 It is well And use a repeat, 00:05:48.31\00:05:50.88 it is well It is well Repeat it, 00:05:50.91\00:05:54.35 it is well And it is well It is well with my soul 00:05:54.38\00:05:58.92 There's a great story behind that. 00:05:58.95\00:06:00.36 We'll talk about that later. 00:06:00.39\00:06:02.32 But that is the power of repetition. 00:06:02.36\00:06:04.76 Some Lanny Wolfe, Andrae Crouch songs 00:06:04.79\00:06:07.33 that highlight repetition. 00:06:07.36\00:06:09.93 One of the songs that God has given me simply says... 00:06:09.96\00:06:13.94 Jesus made me an offer Jesus made me an offer so good 00:06:13.97\00:06:17.91 That I just couldn't turn it down 00:06:17.94\00:06:20.14 I just couldn't turn it down 00:06:20.18\00:06:21.71 I just couldn't turn it down Jesus made me an offer So good 00:06:21.74\00:06:25.61 that I just couldn't turn it down 00:06:25.65\00:06:27.62 Jesus made me an offer. And I just... 00:06:27.65\00:06:30.25 Well, I wonder what this chorus is about. 00:06:30.29\00:06:33.29 Take a listen. 00:06:33.32\00:06:35.42 Jesus made me an offer so good 00:06:35.46\00:06:37.79 That I just couldn't turn it down 00:06:37.83\00:06:41.70 I just couldn't turn it down 00:06:41.73\00:06:43.80 No, I just couldn't turn it down 00:06:43.83\00:06:48.94 Jesus made me an offer so good 00:06:48.97\00:06:51.17 That I just couldn't turn it down 00:06:51.21\00:06:55.48 Jesus made me an offer 00:06:55.51\00:06:58.15 I just couldn't turn it down 00:06:58.18\00:07:00.82 Well, I wonder what that's all about. 00:07:00.85\00:07:02.72 I mean, it's one idea. 00:07:02.75\00:07:04.49 And I'm just driving that nail, 00:07:04.52\00:07:06.65 driving that nail deeper and deeper and deeper. 00:07:06.69\00:07:10.53 I love this little chorus that God gave me. 00:07:10.56\00:07:13.50 It simply says more than ever before. 00:07:13.53\00:07:16.56 Lord, I love You more than ever before, 00:07:16.60\00:07:19.50 Lord, I need You more than ever before, 00:07:19.53\00:07:22.54 I've got to tell You, I love You now 00:07:22.57\00:07:25.51 more than ever before, shows up four times. 00:07:25.54\00:07:28.21 And this illustrates a technique 00:07:28.24\00:07:29.84 that songwriters talk about 00:07:29.88\00:07:31.38 going in the front door and out the back door. 00:07:31.41\00:07:34.15 The very first part of the first line 00:07:34.18\00:07:36.18 is opening the front door more than ever before. 00:07:36.22\00:07:39.59 And the last part of the last line 00:07:39.62\00:07:42.36 going out the back door 00:07:42.39\00:07:43.73 is the same phrase more than ever before. 00:07:43.76\00:07:46.86 I know that I could never love Him enough, 00:07:46.90\00:07:49.56 but I'm sure gonna try. 00:07:49.60\00:07:51.27 I wonder what the second line 00:07:51.30\00:07:52.77 of this Lanny Wolfe's chorus is gonna be. 00:07:52.80\00:07:54.60 I know that I could never love Him enough, 00:07:54.64\00:07:56.81 but I'm sure gonna try. 00:07:56.84\00:07:58.91 If I would start right now and do nothing else 00:07:58.94\00:08:01.71 until the very day that I die, 00:08:01.74\00:08:03.65 I know that I could never love Him enough, 00:08:03.68\00:08:06.58 but I'm sure gonna try. 00:08:06.61\00:08:08.12 So I wanna call your attention to the fact 00:08:08.15\00:08:09.92 that I'm simply illustrating the power of repetition. 00:08:09.95\00:08:13.89 Not concerned about the music at this point, 00:08:13.92\00:08:16.19 and not really concerned about the form. 00:08:16.22\00:08:18.66 There's a fresh touch of desire in my soul today. 00:08:18.69\00:08:22.03 Lanny Wolfe is gonna write a second line 00:08:22.06\00:08:23.80 and you know, he's gonna do it. 00:08:23.83\00:08:25.33 There's a fresh touch of desire to go all the way, 00:08:25.37\00:08:28.37 changed the last part of the second line, 00:08:28.40\00:08:30.74 for I've made up in my mind, 00:08:30.77\00:08:32.81 I'm gonna make it come what may. 00:08:32.84\00:08:35.64 Line four, there's a fresh touch of desire 00:08:35.68\00:08:38.41 in my soul today. 00:08:38.45\00:08:39.98 Andrae Crouch, 00:08:40.02\00:08:41.35 a great songwriter of our generation, 00:08:41.38\00:08:43.49 he wrote this little chorus. 00:08:43.52\00:08:44.95 I don't know why Jesus loved me 00:08:44.99\00:08:47.46 I don't know why He cared 00:08:47.49\00:08:49.92 I don't know why He sacrificed His life Oh, 00:08:49.96\00:08:53.60 but I'm glad, so glad He did 00:08:53.63\00:08:55.46 I don't know why, I don't know why, 00:08:55.50\00:08:57.47 I don't know why, and glad, glad. 00:08:57.50\00:09:00.10 Oh, one of my favorite Andrae Crouch's songs. 00:09:00.14\00:09:03.00 Through it all Through it all 00:09:03.04\00:09:06.74 I've learned to trust in Jesus 00:09:06.78\00:09:09.44 I've learned to trust in God Through it all Through it all 00:09:09.48\00:09:14.92 I've learned to depend upon His Word 00:09:14.95\00:09:17.95 So we get through it all, through it all, 00:09:17.99\00:09:20.32 I've learned to, I've learned to, 00:09:20.36\00:09:22.09 I've learned to. 00:09:22.12\00:09:23.56 And so, he's keenly aware of the value of repetition. 00:09:23.59\00:09:28.76 Now I want to share with you 00:09:28.80\00:09:32.40 one of my favorite techniques for choruses. 00:09:32.43\00:09:35.74 In the last session, we used A, A, A, A prime. 00:09:35.77\00:09:40.81 Now I'm going to talk to you about an extension of that, 00:09:40.84\00:09:45.21 a variation of that, 00:09:45.25\00:09:46.88 and it's simply AA and what I call 00:09:46.92\00:09:50.29 internal rhyme line B and then A, 00:09:50.32\00:09:54.16 and I'll illustrate this. 00:09:54.19\00:09:55.52 So AA line four is A, 00:09:55.56\00:09:58.93 but it's that third line where we divide it up 00:09:58.96\00:10:02.00 and the middle of the third line rhymes 00:10:02.03\00:10:04.87 with the end of the third line. 00:10:04.90\00:10:06.63 And the song 00:10:06.67\00:10:08.47 I keep falling in love with Him illustrates that. 00:10:08.50\00:10:10.64 Let's take a listen. 00:10:10.67\00:10:12.01 And I just keep falling in love with Him 00:10:12.04\00:10:16.08 Over and over, and over and over again 00:10:16.11\00:10:21.65 I keep falling in love with Him 00:10:21.68\00:10:25.29 Over and over, and over and over again 00:10:25.32\00:10:31.03 He gets sweeter and sweeter as the days go by 00:10:31.06\00:10:36.26 Oh, what a love between my Lord and I 00:10:36.30\00:10:39.63 Just keep falling in love with Him 00:10:39.67\00:10:42.40 Over and over, and over and over again 00:10:42.44\00:10:47.48 So that internal rhyme line on the third line, 00:10:47.51\00:10:51.65 he gets sweeter and sweeter as the days go by, 00:10:51.68\00:10:54.98 oh what a love between my Lord and I. 00:10:55.02\00:10:58.72 And then I actually use that I 00:10:58.75\00:11:00.79 to be the last word of line three. 00:11:00.82\00:11:02.82 And the first word of line four. 00:11:02.86\00:11:05.06 I just, same technique on. 00:11:05.09\00:11:08.43 I love the thrill that I fell 00:11:08.46\00:11:11.47 when I get together with God's wonderful people 00:11:11.50\00:11:16.37 Love the thrill that I feel when I get together 00:11:16.40\00:11:20.78 with God's wonderful people 00:11:20.81\00:11:23.78 What a sight just to see all the happy faces 00:11:23.81\00:11:28.42 That's the middle of the third line. 00:11:28.45\00:11:30.29 Praising God in heavenly places 00:11:30.32\00:11:33.59 So we have faces and places, internal rhyme line three. 00:11:33.62\00:11:38.39 And line four is... 00:11:38.43\00:11:39.93 Love the thrill that I feel 00:11:39.96\00:11:41.83 when I get together 00:11:41.86\00:11:43.87 with God's wonderful people 00:11:43.90\00:11:48.90 Have a nice day is another one of these choruses 00:11:48.94\00:11:51.74 that illustrate this. 00:11:51.77\00:11:53.11 Have a nice day with Jesus Have a nice day 00:11:53.14\00:11:56.31 Have a nice day with Jesus 00:11:56.34\00:11:58.18 Have a nice day Here's line three. 00:11:58.21\00:12:01.45 You may wish the sun would shine a little bit brighter 00:12:01.48\00:12:05.19 But when you've got the Lord 00:12:05.22\00:12:06.79 He'll make your load a lot lighter Line four. 00:12:06.82\00:12:10.66 So have a nice day with Jesus Have a nice day 00:12:10.69\00:12:14.83 One, two and four are all ending with day 00:12:14.86\00:12:18.43 and they're the same line. 00:12:18.47\00:12:21.00 Here we are to gather again 00:12:21.04\00:12:24.21 Just praising the Lord 00:12:24.24\00:12:26.51 I wonder what line two is gonna be? 00:12:26.54\00:12:29.31 Here we are together again Just praising the Lord 00:12:29.34\00:12:34.45 Internal rhyme line three. 00:12:34.48\00:12:37.52 It's been a while since we've seen each other 00:12:37.55\00:12:41.32 I'm glad to be with my sisters and brothers 00:12:41.36\00:12:44.36 So we have other brothers, 00:12:44.39\00:12:47.20 and now line four. 00:12:47.23\00:12:48.56 Here we are together again 00:12:48.60\00:12:51.27 Just praising the name of the Lord 00:12:51.30\00:12:54.94 You got the idea what's happening here. 00:12:54.97\00:12:57.44 A song that you're probably familiar with, 00:12:57.47\00:12:59.41 Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir recorded it. 00:12:59.44\00:13:01.78 Jesus, we crown You with praise 00:13:01.81\00:13:03.58 Jesus, we crown You with praise 00:13:03.61\00:13:05.41 We love and adore You Bow down before You Now, 00:13:05.45\00:13:09.72 you and you is officially not a rhyme, 00:13:09.75\00:13:12.99 but it's working as a rhyme 00:13:13.02\00:13:14.62 on that internal line three and then last line 00:13:14.66\00:13:17.43 Jesus we crown You with phrase. 00:13:17.46\00:13:18.79 Let's take a listen to this. 00:13:18.83\00:13:21.46 Jesus, 00:13:21.50\00:13:23.77 We crown You 00:13:23.80\00:13:26.60 With praise 00:13:26.63\00:13:29.60 Jesus, 00:13:32.61\00:13:34.94 We crown You 00:13:34.98\00:13:37.65 With praise 00:13:37.68\00:13:43.35 We love and adore You 00:13:43.39\00:13:49.32 Bow down before You 00:13:49.36\00:13:54.83 Jesus, 00:13:54.86\00:13:57.40 We crown You 00:13:57.43\00:14:00.30 With praise 00:14:00.34\00:14:04.94 I love that chorus, I love the way they did it. 00:14:04.97\00:14:07.94 The Lanny Wolfe Trio was in a concert 00:14:07.98\00:14:09.71 in Kingsport, Tennessee. 00:14:09.74\00:14:11.41 We were singing an upbeat song and most of the audience 00:14:11.45\00:14:14.45 were just clapping along with this. 00:14:14.48\00:14:16.15 I noticed about five rows back 00:14:16.18\00:14:18.19 a little lady there was clapping 00:14:18.22\00:14:19.65 and there was something a little awkward about the way 00:14:19.69\00:14:21.96 she was clapping. 00:14:21.99\00:14:23.32 I also noticed that folks to her left and her right 00:14:23.36\00:14:26.80 were just sitting there with their hand, arms folded. 00:14:26.83\00:14:30.03 So as I looked more closely at this little lady, 00:14:30.07\00:14:33.00 she had this great smile on her face. 00:14:33.03\00:14:34.97 I noticed that her right hand 00:14:35.00\00:14:36.87 was clapping against her left elbow. 00:14:36.91\00:14:39.31 Her left arm had been amputated at the elbow. 00:14:39.34\00:14:42.34 And so she was clapping as best she could 00:14:42.38\00:14:46.05 with what she had to work with. 00:14:46.08\00:14:48.18 And I was so impressed. 00:14:48.22\00:14:49.78 I mean, it just impacted me. 00:14:49.82\00:14:52.29 I don't know the lady's name. 00:14:52.32\00:14:53.82 I never found out her name, 00:14:53.86\00:14:55.56 but leaving that concert that night 00:14:55.59\00:14:58.53 in the Silver Eagle bus, I took out my pen and I wrote, 00:14:58.56\00:15:02.86 I'm gonna praise the Lord any way that I can. 00:15:02.90\00:15:05.73 I want you to take a listen to this and see 00:15:05.77\00:15:07.54 if you can figure out how line three 00:15:07.57\00:15:09.87 is doing internal rhyme. 00:15:09.90\00:15:11.47 Let's take a listen. 00:15:11.51\00:15:13.31 I'm gonna praise the Lord any way that I can 00:15:13.34\00:15:16.75 I'm gonna praise the Lord any way that I can 00:15:20.68\00:15:26.59 I'm gonna pat my feet 00:15:26.62\00:15:29.09 Lift my voice Clap my hands 00:15:29.12\00:15:32.19 I'm gonna sing and rejoice 00:15:32.23\00:15:34.30 I'm gonna praise the Lord any way that I can 00:15:34.33\00:15:39.03 I'm gonna pat my feet, lift my voice. 00:15:42.10\00:15:45.61 I'm gonna clap my hands and honor that dear sister, 00:15:45.64\00:15:49.08 I'm gonna sing and rejoice, voice and rejoice. 00:15:49.11\00:15:53.05 A chorus that I wrote, it feels so good just being here again. 00:15:53.08\00:15:57.95 It feels so good feeling what I feel within. 00:15:57.99\00:16:02.02 There's just nothing I like better 00:16:02.06\00:16:05.43 than God's children getting together. 00:16:05.46\00:16:07.66 It feels so good just being here again. 00:16:07.70\00:16:10.83 AA internal rhyme B, 00:16:10.87\00:16:13.97 and those words that are rhyming on that third line 00:16:14.00\00:16:16.47 are better and together, 00:16:16.50\00:16:19.51 peace and Jesus in a troubled world. 00:16:19.54\00:16:21.68 The Lord gave me this song 30 some years ago. 00:16:21.71\00:16:24.55 And wow, it's more important and impactive today, 00:16:24.58\00:16:29.58 there is peace in Jesus in a troubled world today. 00:16:29.62\00:16:33.29 There's peace in Jesus, 00:16:33.32\00:16:35.09 and the world can't take it away. 00:16:35.12\00:16:36.99 Line three, and tho' there's turmoil all around, 00:16:37.03\00:16:41.70 I'm so glad I have found, 00:16:41.73\00:16:44.20 there is peace in Jesus in a troubled world today. 00:16:44.23\00:16:47.87 And, of course, internal rhyme line three 00:16:47.90\00:16:50.17 was around and found. 00:16:50.21\00:16:53.01 A new chorus that God has given me, 00:16:53.04\00:16:55.74 it's called You're in our prayers, 00:16:55.78\00:16:58.28 You're in our prayers, 00:16:58.31\00:16:59.65 we've touched the throne of grace for You. 00:16:59.68\00:17:02.22 Your Father cares, you notice 00:17:02.25\00:17:04.25 how I've paralleled the first line and the second line, 00:17:04.29\00:17:07.16 You're in our prayers, Your Father cares. 00:17:07.19\00:17:10.03 He's promised He would see you through, 00:17:10.06\00:17:12.63 You can be sure the Great I AM 00:17:12.66\00:17:16.03 will make a way, just trust His plan. 00:17:16.06\00:17:19.07 You're in our prayers, but best of all, 00:17:19.10\00:17:20.94 you're in God's hand. 00:17:20.97\00:17:22.30 This was a very difficult chorus to write. 00:17:22.34\00:17:24.87 I knew that it had to end 00:17:24.91\00:17:26.71 in what songwriters call the payoff line, 00:17:26.74\00:17:30.21 or some songwriters in the secular world would say, 00:17:30.25\00:17:32.75 the money line. 00:17:32.78\00:17:34.22 And the money line or the payoff line would be, 00:17:34.25\00:17:37.32 you're in our prayers, but best of all, 00:17:37.35\00:17:40.06 you're in God's hands. 00:17:40.09\00:17:41.42 That comes out of nowhere. 00:17:41.46\00:17:42.79 And that's the surprise. 00:17:42.82\00:17:44.43 And that's the punch of this whole song. 00:17:44.46\00:17:46.86 So I really wanted line three to end with a word 00:17:46.90\00:17:50.57 that would rhyme with hands. 00:17:50.60\00:17:52.80 And I feel, I felt I wanted to have 00:17:52.83\00:17:55.07 internal rhyme on line three. 00:17:55.10\00:17:57.74 So here I am, I'm needing a word 00:17:57.77\00:18:00.31 to in line three that rhymes with hands. 00:18:00.34\00:18:03.41 And so I finally came up with, you can be sure the great I AM, 00:18:03.45\00:18:08.98 will make a way just trust His plan. 00:18:09.02\00:18:11.32 Now that sounds easy. 00:18:11.35\00:18:12.69 And it's written and it sounds very easy. 00:18:12.72\00:18:15.02 But I'm telling you, 00:18:15.06\00:18:16.39 I would get in my car and for weeks, 00:18:16.42\00:18:18.36 I would just toss phrases around. 00:18:18.39\00:18:20.76 It was, this was one of the hardest challenges 00:18:20.80\00:18:23.33 of songs in recent months that I've written, 00:18:23.37\00:18:27.60 that I was able to finally. 00:18:27.64\00:18:29.67 I know when a song is right. 00:18:29.70\00:18:32.31 I know exactly 00:18:32.34\00:18:33.68 when it finally deserves to be born. 00:18:33.71\00:18:35.61 I will not let it be born until it's exactly right. 00:18:35.64\00:18:38.05 We give You praise, we give You praise, 00:18:38.08\00:18:40.68 we give You praise, Lord, You're worthy. 00:18:40.72\00:18:43.42 With hands up raised, we give You praise, 00:18:43.45\00:18:46.79 we give You glory and praise, 00:18:46.82\00:18:48.62 internal rhyme line three, upraised and praise. 00:18:48.66\00:18:53.36 The beauty of the name. 00:18:53.40\00:18:55.16 It's so beautiful, 00:18:55.20\00:18:57.63 the name of Jesus 00:18:57.67\00:18:59.60 It's so beautiful, 00:18:59.63\00:19:01.37 that precious name 00:19:01.40\00:19:03.77 Here's line three. 00:19:03.81\00:19:05.17 If you'll ask in Jesus name Anything is yours 00:19:05.21\00:19:09.94 just to claim And I love that precious name 00:19:09.98\00:19:15.82 So we have names showing up on the end of line two, 00:19:15.85\00:19:20.09 line four, and we have line three, 00:19:20.12\00:19:23.06 name and claim. 00:19:23.09\00:19:24.93 So claim at the end of line three is working 00:19:24.96\00:19:28.93 as a rhyme with the end of line four. 00:19:28.96\00:19:31.50 So sometimes when I'm doing internal rhyme line three, 00:19:31.53\00:19:34.97 I actually want that to work 00:19:35.00\00:19:36.77 with the last word of line four. 00:19:36.81\00:19:41.51 Wow. 00:19:41.54\00:19:43.28 To me songwriting it's like a puzzle 00:19:43.31\00:19:46.55 God gives me the inspiration and at that point, 00:19:46.58\00:19:49.92 I have to figure out how to put the puzzle together. 00:19:49.95\00:19:53.25 Andrae Crouch... 00:19:53.29\00:19:54.62 To God be the glory To God be the glory 00:19:54.66\00:19:56.96 To God be the glory For the things He has done 00:19:56.99\00:20:00.56 With His blood He has saved me 00:20:00.60\00:20:02.90 With His power He has raised me Internal rhyme, 00:20:02.93\00:20:06.27 to God be the glory, for the things He has done. 00:20:06.30\00:20:08.90 If you write that out in eight short lines, 00:20:08.94\00:20:11.34 you don't get the impact of the form. 00:20:11.37\00:20:13.44 But if you spread it out into four lines, 00:20:13.48\00:20:16.04 then you understand that we have 00:20:16.08\00:20:17.95 to God be the glory, to God be the glory, line one. 00:20:17.98\00:20:21.22 To God be the glory for the things He has done, 00:20:21.25\00:20:23.52 line two. 00:20:23.55\00:20:24.89 And here we have line three, with His blood He has saved me, 00:20:24.92\00:20:28.59 with His power He has raised me, 00:20:28.62\00:20:30.36 internal rhyme line three. 00:20:30.39\00:20:32.73 And last line, to God be the glory, 00:20:32.76\00:20:35.16 for the great things He has done. 00:20:35.20\00:20:37.07 Wow. 00:20:37.10\00:20:38.43 Her name was Loretta Barnard. 00:20:38.47\00:20:39.80 She was a missionary to South Korea. 00:20:39.83\00:20:42.04 She relays the story that one day she was so sick, 00:20:42.07\00:20:46.01 she couldn't even pray for herself. 00:20:46.04\00:20:48.48 So finally, after that, a year later, 00:20:48.51\00:20:52.18 she comes back home and is on furlough. 00:20:52.21\00:20:54.22 She's in a service in Michigan and mentioning about 00:20:54.25\00:20:57.82 this time when she was so sick, she couldn't pray for herself. 00:20:57.85\00:21:00.56 After the service, a dear sister 00:21:00.59\00:21:03.06 came up to Loretta and said, "When was that? 00:21:03.09\00:21:06.90 What was the date?" 00:21:06.93\00:21:08.26 And so, Loretta told her the date and she said, 00:21:08.30\00:21:10.43 "That was the very day that God woke me up 00:21:10.47\00:21:14.44 in the middle of the night and said, 00:21:14.47\00:21:15.97 get out of bed and pray for Loretta Bernard." 00:21:16.00\00:21:20.61 She said, "And I did." 00:21:20.64\00:21:23.28 So I heard about this story 00:21:23.31\00:21:25.88 and when I heard about this story, 00:21:25.91\00:21:28.35 God prompted me to write this chorus. 00:21:28.38\00:21:32.89 Let's take a listen. 00:21:32.92\00:21:36.02 Someone 00:21:36.06\00:21:38.46 Is praying 00:21:38.49\00:21:41.03 For you 00:21:41.06\00:21:46.84 Someone 00:21:46.87\00:21:49.14 Is praying 00:21:49.17\00:21:51.77 For you 00:21:51.81\00:21:56.28 So when it seems you're all alone 00:21:56.31\00:22:02.15 And your heart would break in two 00:22:02.18\00:22:07.26 Remember someone 00:22:07.29\00:22:10.66 Is praying 00:22:10.69\00:22:13.46 For you 00:22:13.50\00:22:18.73 That song has ministered all over the world. 00:22:18.77\00:22:23.04 It originally showed up in a musical 00:22:23.07\00:22:25.31 that Don Marsh orchestrated 00:22:25.34\00:22:28.58 for the Benson Company, greater is He. 00:22:28.61\00:22:31.35 And so somehow it found its way to the Asian communities. 00:22:31.38\00:22:36.08 And it's unbelievable the impact 00:22:36.12\00:22:38.85 that this song has had on the Asian community. 00:22:38.89\00:22:41.59 Let me just call your attention to the fact that what, 00:22:41.62\00:22:43.93 someone is praying for you. 00:22:43.96\00:22:46.46 Someone is praying for you. 00:22:46.49\00:22:48.53 So when it seems you're all alone, 00:22:48.56\00:22:52.07 and your heart would break in two, 00:22:52.10\00:22:54.37 remember someone is praying for you. 00:22:54.40\00:22:55.94 So internal rhyme line three. 00:22:55.97\00:22:59.61 So it seems you're all alone 00:22:59.64\00:23:01.28 and your heart would break in two, 00:23:01.31\00:23:02.68 that's not internal rhyme. 00:23:02.71\00:23:04.68 It feels like it should be. 00:23:04.71\00:23:07.72 Now I could have written that, 00:23:07.75\00:23:09.45 so that it would have been internal rhyme line three, 00:23:09.48\00:23:12.55 I could have written line three. 00:23:12.59\00:23:14.72 So when you're all alone in blue, 00:23:14.76\00:23:18.09 and your heart would break in two, 00:23:18.13\00:23:21.00 remember someone. 00:23:21.03\00:23:22.36 Now, here's the problem with that. 00:23:22.40\00:23:24.53 If I would have chosen to have had that 00:23:24.57\00:23:26.37 as the internal rhyme line three, 00:23:26.40\00:23:29.77 then we would have had you, you, 00:23:29.80\00:23:33.98 blue, two, you. 00:23:34.01\00:23:38.55 That's overload. 00:23:38.58\00:23:39.95 That's kill. 00:23:39.98\00:23:41.42 So that's too much. 00:23:41.45\00:23:43.18 So that's why we didn't sense to do an internal line, 00:23:43.22\00:23:47.89 rhyme, internal rhyme line three. 00:23:47.92\00:23:50.39 So this is the principle. 00:23:50.43\00:23:52.23 When you're using internal rhyme on the third line, 00:23:52.26\00:23:56.06 basically those words usually are different words 00:23:56.10\00:24:01.10 than what the ends of one, two and four are. 00:24:01.14\00:24:04.44 So they are different words. 00:24:04.47\00:24:05.91 I love the thrill that I feel 00:24:05.94\00:24:07.44 when I get together with God's wonderful people. 00:24:07.48\00:24:09.88 Love the thrill that I feel 00:24:09.91\00:24:11.35 when I get together with God's wonderful people. 00:24:11.38\00:24:14.05 What a sight just to see all the happy faces, 00:24:14.08\00:24:17.65 praising God in heavenly places. 00:24:17.69\00:24:19.25 So we have faces and places rather than people. 00:24:19.29\00:24:23.22 Now there are times when we will have 00:24:23.26\00:24:25.96 internal rhyme on the third line, 00:24:25.99\00:24:28.66 rhyming with the last word of line four. 00:24:28.70\00:24:33.00 So I do incorporate that like I did on, 00:24:33.03\00:24:35.97 you're in God's hands. 00:24:36.00\00:24:38.51 I want to call your attention to the fact 00:24:38.54\00:24:40.18 that the song someone is praying for you 00:24:40.21\00:24:44.15 would never have been written 00:24:44.18\00:24:45.51 if Sister Bernard had never been sick, 00:24:45.55\00:24:47.85 or if she had been sick but not so sick 00:24:47.88\00:24:51.29 that she couldn't have prayed for herself. 00:24:51.32\00:24:53.09 Or if the sister in Michigan 00:24:53.12\00:24:56.02 would have not been spiritually sensitive 00:24:56.06\00:24:58.06 and listened to God's voice 00:24:58.09\00:24:59.43 and said get out of bed and pray for Loretta Bernard. 00:24:59.46\00:25:02.10 Or if all of that would have happened, 00:25:02.13\00:25:04.80 and I never heard the story, this song would never been. 00:25:04.83\00:25:08.04 Isn't that amazing how God does all that 00:25:08.07\00:25:10.97 for His honor and for His glory. 00:25:11.01\00:25:13.78 So, I want to remind you, 00:25:13.81\00:25:17.05 that songwriting is so exciting, 00:25:17.08\00:25:19.48 when God anoints your heart and your mind with some idea. 00:25:19.51\00:25:23.18 And I just want to keep impressing you 00:25:23.22\00:25:25.42 that you actually can write a song. 00:25:25.45\00:25:27.92 In general, the internal line for rhyme three 00:25:27.96\00:25:31.53 is just this exciting principle 00:25:31.56\00:25:34.30 that encompasses so many Lanny Wolfe's songs. 00:25:34.33\00:25:36.90 So remember, I want you to keep your ears, 00:25:36.93\00:25:40.47 your eyes, your heart open, 00:25:40.50\00:25:43.44 you just never, never know, 00:25:43.47\00:25:46.34 when you might hear or see some moment of inspiration, 00:25:46.37\00:25:50.21 that might be your more than wonderful song 00:25:50.25\00:25:53.75 that the world is waiting to hear. 00:25:53.78\00:25:55.88 You might write a song 00:25:55.92\00:25:58.09 that Lanny Wolfe would never write. 00:25:58.12\00:26:00.69 You don't say like, well, 00:26:00.72\00:26:02.96 I maybe I couldn't write it as good as him. 00:26:02.99\00:26:05.33 Or maybe I couldn't write as good as somebody else. 00:26:05.36\00:26:08.20 No, no, if God gives you a song, 00:26:08.23\00:26:10.57 you write it, write, write, edit it, 00:26:10.60\00:26:14.07 throw away, rewrite, write, 00:26:14.10\00:26:16.57 and then protect the child that God has given you. 00:26:16.60\00:26:19.17 And just be reminded that 00:26:19.21\00:26:21.11 this is something that you can do, 00:26:21.14\00:26:23.35 you can write a song. 00:26:23.38\00:26:24.85 Lanny, that was so full of... 00:26:31.92\00:26:34.62 It was chock-full of information. 00:26:34.66\00:26:36.83 Thank you so much for that. 00:26:36.86\00:26:39.96 One of the things that I loved about that is the formula, 00:26:40.00\00:26:43.40 the formula, the AA B, which is the internal rhyme. 00:26:43.43\00:26:46.94 Internal rhyme B. 00:26:46.97\00:26:48.30 B which is and an A. 00:26:48.34\00:26:50.51 And don't be surprised 00:26:50.54\00:26:52.37 if you hear that in one of my songs 00:26:52.41\00:26:54.01 that I'm gonna work on. 00:26:54.04\00:26:55.61 No, I'm doing this, 00:26:55.64\00:26:56.98 so you can learn to write a song. 00:26:57.01\00:26:58.68 This is great. This is great. 00:26:58.71\00:27:00.42 And I really do want to implement 00:27:00.45\00:27:02.38 this in my next assignment which is... 00:27:02.42\00:27:06.96 Next assignment is using repetition. 00:27:06.99\00:27:10.09 I want you to write three or four choruses 00:27:10.13\00:27:12.63 that use this new format that is a favorite of mine, 00:27:12.66\00:27:16.10 AA, 00:27:16.13\00:27:18.17 internal rhyme line B, A, 00:27:18.20\00:27:22.54 I need three or four of those choruses. 00:27:22.57\00:27:24.57 And by the way, our next session 00:27:24.61\00:27:26.94 we're going to talk about where do I get ideas for songs? 00:27:26.98\00:27:29.41 It's one of my favorites. 00:27:29.44\00:27:31.28 Oh, that's great. 00:27:31.31\00:27:32.65 Where do we get ideas? 00:27:32.68\00:27:34.02 Oh. 00:27:34.05\00:27:35.38 No hands, but that's it. 00:27:38.32\00:27:40.06 Okay, that's good. That's good. 00:27:40.09\00:27:41.42 That's good enough. 00:27:41.46\00:27:42.79 Well, thank you so much. 00:27:42.82\00:27:44.16 I'm going to work on this 00:27:44.19\00:27:45.53 and you have something to work on to. 00:27:45.56\00:27:47.40 Make sure that you tune in. 00:27:47.43\00:27:49.60 If you missed the first episode, 00:27:49.63\00:27:51.73 which dealt with simplicity and repetition, 00:27:51.77\00:27:53.90 make sure you check that out as well. 00:27:53.94\00:27:56.24 You know why? 00:27:56.27\00:27:57.61 Because you can write a song. 00:27:57.64\00:28:00.08
