00:08:54.06\00:08:55.43 so I thought, or so the grade said. 00:08:55.46\00:08:57.27 And so I thought maybe I should be an architect. 00:08:57.30\00:08:59.30 And after my first quarter at Ohio State University, 00:08:59.33\00:09:02.84 I decided that I felt like I didn't want my life 00:09:02.87\00:09:05.81 to be consumed with that project. 00:09:05.84\00:09:09.44 And so God just kind of worked the way He does. 00:09:09.48\00:09:14.02 Somebody from a Bible college 00:09:14.05\00:09:15.68 on the West Coast came to me and said, 00:09:15.72\00:09:17.89 "We're going to become missionaries to France 00:09:17.92\00:09:20.19 and they need a minister 00:09:20.22\00:09:21.56 or they need a dean at the School of Music." 00:09:21.59\00:09:23.86 Well, number one, 00:09:23.89\00:09:25.23 I didn't really know that much about music. 00:09:25.26\00:09:27.16 I played. 00:09:27.20\00:09:28.53 I had written my first song at 15, God is Wonderful. 00:09:28.56\00:09:32.63 The song wasn't as wonderful as the title. 00:09:32.67\00:09:36.27 But what's amazing about this folks is 27 years later 00:09:36.30\00:09:40.38 after the first song, God is Wonderful, 00:09:40.41\00:09:42.74 God gave me a song called More than Wonderful. 00:09:42.78\00:09:45.78 And it somehow was something that the first song wasn't. 00:09:45.81\00:09:50.59 So I went to the West Coast. 00:09:50.62\00:09:52.85 I taught there for a year and realized 00:09:52.89\00:09:55.29 that as much as I enjoy 00:09:55.32\00:09:56.66 what I was doing and teaching young people, 00:09:56.69\00:09:58.19 I really didn't have the knowledge 00:09:58.23\00:10:01.26 that I needed to be fair, 00:10:01.30\00:10:02.76 to instruct people at college level. 00:10:02.80\00:10:04.80 So I worked on my first degree in music. 00:10:04.83\00:10:08.34 So I'd already had two degrees, one in math and business, 00:10:08.37\00:10:12.27 and a master's degree in business administration. 00:10:12.31\00:10:14.81 So now I'm working on a second BA degree, 00:10:14.84\00:10:16.88 this time in music education. 00:10:16.91\00:10:19.31 I got that from San Jose State University. 00:10:19.35\00:10:22.38 Went to a Bible college that was opening up in 1968 00:10:22.42\00:10:27.56 in St. Louis, Missouri. 00:10:27.59\00:10:29.09 So I was there for six years, 00:10:29.12\00:10:31.49 and that's where Dave Petersen became a student. 00:10:31.53\00:10:35.46 We formed the Lanny Wolfe Trio. 00:10:35.50\00:10:37.60 We got associated with the Benson Company. 00:10:37.63\00:10:39.87 But all those six years, I remember 00:10:39.90\00:10:43.10 every Monday night driving 27 miles 00:10:43.14\00:10:45.51 to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, 00:10:45.54\00:10:48.78 working on my master's degree in music. 00:10:48.81\00:10:51.41 And so got that. 00:10:51.45\00:10:53.08 And then in 1974 00:10:53.11\00:10:57.09 felt that God wanted us to go to a Bible college 00:10:57.12\00:11:00.02 that was moving from Tupelo to Jackson, Mississippi, 00:11:00.06\00:11:03.06 Jackson College of Ministries, where I was for 18 years. 00:11:03.09\00:11:07.30 So I ended up with two degrees in business, 00:11:07.33\00:11:11.43 two degrees in music, and an honorary doctorate. 00:11:11.47\00:11:13.37 That's called five degrees, 14 years, slow student. 00:11:13.40\00:11:19.07 Wonderful background though. 00:11:19.11\00:11:20.51 Oh, yes. 00:11:20.54\00:11:22.21 And growing up as you would have never dreamed 00:11:22.24\00:11:24.48 where God would have taken you. 00:11:24.51\00:11:25.85 Never would have had the vaguest idea 00:11:25.88\00:11:28.48 of what God was going to do in my life. 00:11:28.52\00:11:32.25 It's so... 00:11:32.29\00:11:33.62 You know, when you are young, I'm 18, 00:11:33.66\00:11:38.43 you want to do what God wants you to do. 00:11:38.46\00:11:41.13 But sometimes we have the hardest time 00:11:41.16\00:11:43.13 weeding through all the stuff around us 00:11:43.16\00:11:46.60 to finally find out what God really wants us to do. 00:11:46.63\00:11:49.14 I'm so glad that I finally found out 00:11:49.17\00:11:52.14 what God really wanted me to do. 00:11:52.17\00:11:53.51 And it's been a joy to be a teacher 00:11:53.54\00:11:55.94 to young people at college level. 00:11:55.98\00:11:57.68 But my greatest joy is writing songs 00:11:57.71\00:12:00.08 that will bless the body of Christ 00:12:00.12\00:12:02.82 long after I'm past. 00:12:02.85\00:12:05.72 And, you know, it's true. 00:12:05.75\00:12:07.76 I can't imagine 00:12:07.79\00:12:09.12 some of these songs that you've written 00:12:09.16\00:12:10.66 never just disappearing in the Christian realm, 00:12:10.69\00:12:14.10 because these songs are going to be sung 00:12:14.13\00:12:16.16 because they minister to us. 00:12:16.20\00:12:19.80 Again, I can talk personally about this 00:12:19.83\00:12:21.77 because I've been so blessed, 00:12:21.80\00:12:23.41 so affected by your music 00:12:23.44\00:12:26.71 that, actually, it encouraged me. 00:12:26.74\00:12:28.88 I'll give you a little bit of background. 00:12:28.91\00:12:30.95 Sure. 00:12:30.98\00:12:32.31 In 1970s, in '75, I went to Michigan for four years 00:12:32.35\00:12:36.89 from Southern Illinois. 00:12:36.92\00:12:38.25 I managed the lumberyard up in Berrien Springs, Michigan. 00:12:38.29\00:12:41.19 And so while I was there, it was a great time. 00:12:41.22\00:12:44.83 Is that the Danny Shelton Home Depot lumberyard? 00:12:44.86\00:12:46.83 Well, not quite. 00:12:46.86\00:12:48.20 They didn't have Home Depots back then. 00:12:48.23\00:12:50.03 But while I was there, 00:12:50.07\00:12:51.67 I was building some houses on the side. 00:12:51.70\00:12:54.27 And I remember going over. 00:12:54.30\00:12:55.84 I worked there and then I'd work weekends 00:12:55.87\00:12:57.51 and sometime nights on a house, 00:12:57.54\00:12:59.41 like I'd build a spec house to sell it. 00:12:59.44\00:13:01.61 And I remember actually over there 00:13:01.64\00:13:03.75 listening to Lanny Wolfe Trio. 00:13:03.78\00:13:06.15 And so I had, I think it was cassettes then. 00:13:06.18\00:13:09.42 Or 8-tracks. 00:13:09.45\00:13:10.79 Yeah, 8-tracks or cassettes. 00:13:10.82\00:13:12.15 And I remember that in the house 00:13:12.19\00:13:14.26 and I listened to your chords. 00:13:14.29\00:13:16.46 I'm not a great musician, 00:13:16.49\00:13:17.83 but I know a few chords and learned, 00:13:17.86\00:13:19.43 kind of self-learned. 00:13:19.46\00:13:20.80 And so I learned some chords and then one day 00:13:20.83\00:13:23.63 I would have been at work and it'd been a terrible day. 00:13:23.67\00:13:27.57 It was really raining. 00:13:27.60\00:13:28.94 And so I ended up going to the house, 00:13:28.97\00:13:30.64 there's thunderstorm. 00:13:30.67\00:13:32.01 But then right before the sun went down, 00:13:32.04\00:13:35.58 I noticed through the clouds there was this great, 00:13:35.61\00:13:37.75 beautiful golden sunset and a rainbow. 00:13:37.78\00:13:42.18 And so that prompted me to write a song. 00:13:42.22\00:13:45.35 Now I'd written a few little songs, 00:13:45.39\00:13:47.46 but that it really was an influence of Lanny Wolfe 00:13:47.49\00:13:50.69 because I'd been listening to your music. 00:13:50.73\00:13:52.89 And here I have the time off 00:13:52.93\00:13:54.30 and I'm listening to your chords. 00:13:54.33\00:13:56.03 And so if you'll probably, 00:13:56.06\00:13:57.90 if you listened to a few of my songs, 00:13:57.93\00:13:59.63 you might hear some of Lanny Wolfe chords in it. 00:13:59.67\00:14:01.90 Not everybody uses 13s 00:14:01.94\00:14:03.34 and things like if you're doing say undeserving. 00:14:03.37\00:14:06.64 And I'm like, "Wow, what is that chord? 00:14:06.68\00:14:08.08 That's pretty neat." So I get my guitar. 00:14:08.11\00:14:10.15 So I actually learned from you so way back before we ever met. 00:14:10.18\00:14:12.95 And before you learned any chords from Lanny Wolfe, 00:14:12.98\00:14:16.55 I took lessons from Frank Meier, God bless, 00:14:16.58\00:14:20.26 when I was nine for two years. 00:14:20.29\00:14:22.29 And then he said he was moving away. 00:14:22.32\00:14:23.66 I don't think he moved away. 00:14:23.69\00:14:25.19 I'm a pretty bad student. 00:14:25.23\00:14:27.73 John Thompson's book 1, 00:14:27.76\00:14:29.10 all I did was read the numbers like any smart kid would do. 00:14:29.13\00:14:32.13 So when I got to the end of book 00:14:32.17\00:14:33.50 1 and I'm going into book 2, 00:14:33.54\00:14:35.40 oh my word, I don't know how to read notes. 00:14:35.44\00:14:37.54 Anyway, I learned 00:14:37.57\00:14:38.91 from that point on as a teenager. 00:14:38.94\00:14:40.98 I actually learned chords from John W. Peterson 00:14:41.01\00:14:44.38 and all those books that he put out. 00:14:44.41\00:14:47.92 He augmented 11th and there were the notes. 00:14:47.95\00:14:50.22 And so I learned chords from John W. Peterson. 00:14:50.25\00:14:52.82 And in turn, you picked up some Lanny Wolfe chords. 00:14:52.85\00:14:55.59 Sure, I augmented, I don't deserve... 00:14:55.62\00:14:57.63 When you go and do little augmentative stuff. 00:14:57.66\00:14:59.59 You know, yeah, and all of that I listened. 00:14:59.63\00:15:02.30 My brother Tommy played and I'd hear him some, 00:15:02.33\00:15:05.30 but never took formal training. 00:15:05.33\00:15:07.97 And that's what's great about this new program, 00:15:08.00\00:15:10.21 you can write a song. 00:15:10.24\00:15:11.64 You don't... Lanny's got numerous degrees. 00:15:11.67\00:15:14.31 I'm too old. 00:15:14.34\00:15:15.68 If I started school today, I'd never... 00:15:15.71\00:15:17.38 I'd be 110 before I got all those. 00:15:17.41\00:15:19.91 You don't need it. 00:15:19.95\00:15:21.28 What you need is, first of all, is your commitment to the Lord, 00:15:21.32\00:15:24.32 to say, "Lord, please use me in ways that I never dreamed." 00:15:24.35\00:15:27.69 Now we have people who send us songs all the time and say, 00:15:27.72\00:15:30.93 "Here, you're welcome to use this." 00:15:30.96\00:15:32.39 Yes, we do. Yeah. 00:15:32.43\00:15:33.76 I'm sure you get more than we do. 00:15:33.80\00:15:35.23 But people say, "Here, you can use this." 00:15:35.26\00:15:37.20 They really maybe don't understand 00:15:37.23\00:15:39.57 all that's involved in using a song or getting songs, 00:15:39.60\00:15:42.90 or maybe the song doesn't fit what you're doing. 00:15:42.94\00:15:45.94 But so what we want to do is help people 00:15:45.97\00:15:48.81 in order to construct a song, 00:15:48.84\00:15:50.95 to put it together in a way that anybody can do it. 00:15:50.98\00:15:54.45 You love the Lord. 00:15:54.48\00:15:55.82 You like music. 00:15:55.85\00:15:57.19 And maybe as Lanny said, 00:15:57.22\00:15:58.55 you don't know much about music, 00:15:58.59\00:16:00.16 but you can write words. 00:16:00.19\00:16:01.86 You can write the words. 00:16:01.89\00:16:03.22 That's right. 00:16:03.26\00:16:04.59 And so a lot of times that happens on numbers. 00:16:04.63\00:16:06.86 I think Fanny Crosby was one of those 00:16:06.90\00:16:08.80 that really didn't write the music. 00:16:08.83\00:16:10.17 She never wrote music to one song. 00:16:10.20\00:16:11.60 Wow. 00:16:11.63\00:16:12.97 She wrote words to 8,000 hymns. 00:16:13.00\00:16:14.40 Yeah, ain't that amazing, 8,000. 00:16:14.44\00:16:16.44 Eight thousand hymns. 00:16:16.47\00:16:17.81 And she didn't write her first hymn 00:16:17.84\00:16:20.31 until she was 44 years old. 00:16:20.34\00:16:22.18 Wow. 00:16:22.21\00:16:23.55 Do the math. 00:16:23.58\00:16:24.91 That is amazing. 00:16:24.95\00:16:26.28 Eight thousand. She lived to be 95. 00:16:26.31\00:16:27.72 So for 51 years, she wrote 8,000 hymns. 00:16:27.75\00:16:31.12 But not one of those did she write a note of music. 00:16:31.15\00:16:33.36 So a lot of you folks out there just be reminded that like, 00:16:33.39\00:16:37.63 don't be afraid about this whole idea 00:16:37.66\00:16:39.49 that you don't play the piano, you don't play the guitar. 00:16:39.53\00:16:41.33 No, no, no. 00:16:41.36\00:16:42.70 Hey, you've got a Bible. 00:16:42.73\00:16:45.33 Read the Bible where there's a scripture says, 00:16:45.37\00:16:47.70 "Greater is He that is in me than he is in the world." 00:16:47.74\00:16:50.94 One of the songs that has probably been most impactive 00:16:50.97\00:16:54.88 in the Lanny Wolfe portfolio 00:16:54.91\00:16:56.71 is, Greater is He that is in me 00:16:56.75\00:16:59.81 Greater is He that is in me 00:16:59.85\00:17:01.38 Greater is He that's in me Than he that is in... 00:17:01.42\00:17:04.62 Excuse me, it was already there. 00:17:04.65\00:17:07.52 And I took it and I made it a song. 00:17:07.56\00:17:10.13 So if I did that, I just pulled it from the Bible. 00:17:10.16\00:17:13.16 You can do that too. 00:17:13.19\00:17:14.53 Absolutely. 00:17:14.56\00:17:15.90 It's so much easier than a lot of people admit. 00:17:15.93\00:17:18.00 And I want to design this program in this scenario 00:17:18.03\00:17:22.57 so that even if you don't write a song, 00:17:22.60\00:17:25.17 that it will be inspirational to you. 00:17:25.21\00:17:27.01 If you just like gospel music, 00:17:27.04\00:17:28.64 you're going to like this series. 00:17:28.68\00:17:30.28 Okay. 00:17:30.31\00:17:31.65 Let's talk a little bit about some of the folk 00:17:31.68\00:17:33.15 that maybe some of your students 00:17:33.18\00:17:34.95 or some of the songs I think of Geron Davis 00:17:34.98\00:17:37.65 writing Holy Ground... 00:17:37.69\00:17:39.12 Of course, one of my students. 00:17:39.15\00:17:40.62 From the beginning of 3ABN, 00:17:40.66\00:17:41.99 we used to go out to the Uplink, 00:17:42.02\00:17:43.83 our first little building before it was even built. 00:17:43.86\00:17:46.19 Just shelling it up 00:17:46.23\00:17:47.56 and we'd stand there joining hands together and sing, 00:17:47.60\00:17:50.43 "We are standing on holy ground." 00:17:50.47\00:17:53.20 And just, you know, but I found out later 00:17:53.23\00:17:55.77 that he was a student of yours. 00:17:55.80\00:17:57.21 Absolutely. 00:17:57.24\00:17:58.57 And to write incredible songs, great musician. 00:17:58.61\00:18:00.94 Who are some of the other folk? 00:18:00.98\00:18:02.31 Dan Dean of Phillips, Craig, and Dean was a student of mine. 00:18:02.34\00:18:05.05 Actually, played keyboard for the Lanny Wolfe Trio. 00:18:05.08\00:18:07.62 Okay. 00:18:07.65\00:18:09.38 The song, the Beauty of the Name. 00:18:09.42\00:18:11.55 That was co-written by a student and a teacher. 00:18:11.59\00:18:14.82 The teacher was Lanny Wolfe. 00:18:14.86\00:18:16.39 The student was Tony Roberts who took songwriting. 00:18:16.42\00:18:20.33 Okay. 00:18:20.36\00:18:21.70 And so, that's a co-write 00:18:21.73\00:18:23.06 between one of my students and the teacher. 00:18:23.10\00:18:27.04 We have Jeannie Tenney who wrote the song, 00:18:27.07\00:18:30.04 One Night with the King. 00:18:30.07\00:18:32.01 And her husband, Tommy Tenney of God Chasers, 00:18:32.04\00:18:34.84 he actually wrote the movie, you know? 00:18:34.88\00:18:36.64 Oh, I see. 00:18:36.68\00:18:38.01 I just have so many wonderful songwriters. 00:18:38.05\00:18:40.25 I mean, Wayne Goodine and his wife, 00:18:40.28\00:18:42.05 Elizabeth Goodine. 00:18:42.08\00:18:43.42 They've written songs that Brooklyn Tab has recorded. 00:18:43.45\00:18:46.39 The list just goes on and on and on. 00:18:46.42\00:18:48.39 But the bottom line 00:18:48.42\00:18:49.76 is even if no one ever sings your song or publishes it, 00:18:49.79\00:18:53.76 I believe that God gives songs 00:18:53.80\00:18:55.90 to some of us just to bless us. 00:18:55.93\00:18:58.47 Maybe God will give you a song just to bless you. 00:18:58.50\00:19:01.00 Well, then let it bless you. 00:19:01.04\00:19:03.04 Or maybe to bless your family, or your local church, 00:19:03.07\00:19:06.21 or your local camp meeting, 00:19:06.24\00:19:07.61 or your local church organization. 00:19:07.64\00:19:09.38 And I believe God gives songs to some to bless the world. 00:19:09.41\00:19:12.38 A song will find a way to go wherever it needs to go 00:19:12.41\00:19:16.22 if it blesses. 00:19:16.25\00:19:17.92 You won't remember this. 00:19:17.95\00:19:19.29 And I don't think we've ever talked about it, 00:19:19.32\00:19:21.59 but I think it was here in Illinois. 00:19:21.62\00:19:23.96 You were at church there Lanny Wolfe Trio 00:19:23.99\00:19:27.10 probably in the 70s. 00:19:27.13\00:19:28.60 And Melody and her mother that was later killed 00:19:28.63\00:19:31.43 in an automobile accident case. 00:19:31.47\00:19:33.23 She loved your music also. 00:19:33.27\00:19:34.67 We were there listening and afterwards, 00:19:34.70\00:19:38.27 I don't know if you were at a record table. 00:19:38.31\00:19:39.67 Back then there were records, record table. 00:19:39.71\00:19:42.14 There were real records. 00:19:42.18\00:19:43.51 But I said something to you. 00:19:43.55\00:19:44.88 I talked and I said something about writing 00:19:44.91\00:19:47.88 because I was interested in writing music. 00:19:47.92\00:19:49.92 I don't remember this day. 00:19:49.95\00:19:51.29 You don't. 00:19:51.32\00:19:52.65 And I just thought about it 00:19:52.69\00:19:54.02 for the other day when it hit me, 00:19:54.06\00:19:55.39 because when you said that sometimes 00:19:55.42\00:19:57.89 the song will bless you, sometimes the world. 00:19:57.93\00:20:00.06 So I said something, "How did you get into this? 00:20:00.10\00:20:02.96 Like, I have some music. 00:20:03.00\00:20:04.57 You're with what company?" You said, "Benson." 00:20:04.60\00:20:06.27 And I said something. 00:20:06.30\00:20:07.64 Now I'm paraphrasing because I don't remember. 00:20:07.67\00:20:09.00 Sure. 00:20:09.04\00:20:10.37 But basically, you said to me, what you said to me was, 00:20:10.41\00:20:13.91 and now it brought it back to me 00:20:13.94\00:20:15.58 after so many years. 00:20:15.61\00:20:16.95 You said, "Maybe the song 00:20:16.98\00:20:19.05 that God gave you is just for you. 00:20:19.08\00:20:20.82 Maybe it's something you need. 00:20:20.85\00:20:22.52 So don't think every song you write, 00:20:22.55\00:20:24.89 the whole world is going to love it." 00:20:24.92\00:20:26.65 And, you know...
