Have you ever wondered how you can have a closer 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.80 walk with Jesus? 00:00:03.83\00:00:04.80 Stay tuned and we'll share with you how you can do just that 00:00:04.81\00:00:08.25 in this edition of Walking With Jesus. 00:00:08.28\00:00:10.77 Greetings, I'm Eric Garloff, your host for 00:00:26.11\00:00:28.35 Walking With Jesus. 00:00:28.38\00:00:29.35 In today's episode of Walking With Jesus we're going to be 00:00:29.36\00:00:32.45 talking about how we mature in Jesus, or how we grow up in 00:00:32.48\00:00:36.00 Jesus, and walk with Him on a daily basis. 00:00:36.03\00:00:38.44 The Bible gives us much to guide us in this area, and I pray that 00:00:38.47\00:00:43.43 this episode will be a tremendous blessing to your 00:00:43.46\00:00:46.05 understanding of what it means to mature in Christ. 00:00:46.08\00:00:49.34 Many people, after yielding their life to Christ, 00:00:49.37\00:00:52.66 and accepting Jesus as their Lord, at some point tend to stop 00:00:52.69\00:00:57.33 walking with Jesus and begin to go it alone. 00:00:57.36\00:01:00.26 They take back into their own hands the control of their life 00:01:00.29\00:01:04.51 in which they had given to Christ. 00:01:04.54\00:01:06.49 It's as if they themselves now have somehow found the power 00:01:06.52\00:01:11.65 to over sin and temptation all by themselves and no longer 00:01:11.68\00:01:14.89 need the Holy Spirit in their life to empower them 00:01:14.92\00:01:17.55 or to protect them. 00:01:17.58\00:01:18.83 Friends, when we do this we are taking ourselves 00:01:18.86\00:01:23.21 out of God's hand. 00:01:23.24\00:01:24.30 We're removing ourselves from His wisdom, His guidance, 00:01:24.33\00:01:29.07 and His protection. 00:01:29.10\00:01:30.18 We are disconnecting ourselves from the very source 00:01:30.21\00:01:33.56 of our spiritual life. 00:01:33.59\00:01:34.83 We cannot go it alone. 00:01:34.86\00:01:36.86 We need to draw our energies, our wisdom, and our very life 00:01:36.89\00:01:41.42 from the Source of Life on a moment by moment basis. 00:01:41.45\00:01:44.63 Jesus speaks about our dependence on God 00:01:45.36\00:01:47.85 in Matthew 6:25-33 which says: 00:01:47.88\00:01:51.39 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, 00:02:31.63\00:02:34.43 which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, 00:02:34.46\00:02:37.10 will He not much more clothe you, Oh ye of little faith? 00:02:37.13\00:02:41.25 So do not worry saying what shall we eat, 00:02:41.28\00:02:44.71 or what shall we drink, or what shall we wear? 00:02:44.74\00:02:47.54 In essence, Jesus is telling us here that we should rest in Him. 00:03:00.87\00:03:04.74 We shouldn't go about our day worried as to how our provisions 00:03:04.77\00:03:08.13 will be assured, but instead He bids us to seek first 00:03:08.16\00:03:11.69 the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and in so doing 00:03:11.72\00:03:16.04 all of our provisions will be given to us by Him. 00:03:16.07\00:03:19.54 It's a matter of keeping our focus on the One who gives us 00:03:19.57\00:03:22.44 forgiveness of sin and salvation for our very life. 00:03:22.47\00:03:25.88 It's a matter of leaving our life in God's hands 00:03:25.91\00:03:29.07 and not trying to regain control over it. 00:03:29.10\00:03:32.20 It's a matter of trusting God and taking Him at His word. 00:03:32.23\00:03:35.35 Let's compare this new birth experience with the actual birth 00:03:37.97\00:03:41.86 of a new born baby. 00:03:41.89\00:03:43.23 When a baby is born can he take care of himself? 00:03:43.26\00:03:47.05 Can he feed himself, or change his diaper, 00:03:47.08\00:03:51.22 or drive himself to the doctor for a checkup? 00:03:51.25\00:03:53.92 Of course not! 00:03:53.95\00:03:55.10 He needs his parents to love him, nurture him, care for him, 00:03:55.13\00:03:59.76 and direct him in the right path. 00:03:59.79\00:04:01.57 So it is with us. 00:04:01.60\00:04:03.09 When we experience the new birth in Jesus 00:04:03.12\00:04:05.80 our heavenly father loves us, cares for us, and places us 00:04:05.81\00:04:10.33 on the right path. 00:04:10.36\00:04:11.43 Now, when this baby becomes a few years older, 00:04:11.46\00:04:14.51 and he's able to feed himself, and dress himself, 00:04:14.54\00:04:18.20 does this mean that he's now ready to face 00:04:18.23\00:04:20.87 the world on his own? 00:04:20.90\00:04:21.87 Of course not. 00:04:21.88\00:04:23.17 He still needs to rely on his parents for his daily needs 00:04:23.20\00:04:26.68 and protection. 00:04:26.71\00:04:27.68 So it is with us as we grow in Jesus. 00:04:27.69\00:04:30.33 We need to rely on Him every day for our provisions. 00:04:30.36\00:04:33.24 Reading from the book Steps to Christ, page 46 and 47, 00:04:33.27\00:04:36.86 we find this passage: 00:04:36.89\00:04:38.36 Drawing your life from Him, you will not wither 00:05:15.37\00:05:18.76 nor be fruitless. 00:05:18.79\00:05:19.85 You will be like a tree planted by the rivers of the water. 00:05:19.88\00:05:23.48 Many have an idea that they must do some part of the work alone. 00:05:23.51\00:05:27.21 They have trusted in Christ for the forgiveness of sin, 00:05:27.24\00:05:30.39 but now they seek by their own efforts to live aright, 00:05:30.42\00:05:34.17 but every such effort must fail. 00:05:34.20\00:05:36.26 And what beautiful thoughts these are indeed. 00:06:13.66\00:06:16.61 It's a fact of life, friends, when you cut a branch 00:06:16.64\00:06:19.69 from a tree, or from a vine, the branch begins to die. 00:06:19.72\00:06:23.18 It's been separated from the source of its life. 00:06:23.21\00:06:26.64 Its leaves wither, dry, crumble into pieces and blow away. 00:06:26.67\00:06:30.26 Who would even consider being removed from the vine 00:06:30.29\00:06:33.76 or cutting themselves off from the source of life 00:06:33.79\00:06:35.86 when understood like this? 00:06:35.89\00:06:37.43 Yet, my friend, this is what we then do when we try to take back 00:06:39.14\00:06:44.46 control of our life once we've given it to Jesus. 00:06:44.47\00:06:47.48 The new birth experience is like placing a seed into the soil 00:06:47.51\00:06:51.61 and giving it water. 00:06:51.64\00:06:52.61 By the way, water is a symbol of the baptism 00:06:52.62\00:06:55.61 of the Holy Spirit. 00:06:55.64\00:06:56.61 Then, in a few days, the seed sprouts and brings forth life. 00:06:56.62\00:07:00.99 This sprout of new life is tender and delicate. 00:07:01.02\00:07:05.74 If you disconnect it from the source of life by pulling it up 00:07:06.32\00:07:09.43 out of the ground, it quickly withers and dies. 00:07:09.46\00:07:12.10 So it is with us if we disconnect ourselves from Jesus. 00:07:12.13\00:07:15.66 Colossians 2:6,10 says this: 00:07:15.69\00:07:18.65 Now let me ask you this. 00:07:51.94\00:07:53.30 Verse 6 said, As you have received Christ so walk in him. 00:07:53.33\00:07:58.03 How have you received Christ? 00:07:58.06\00:08:00.86 I hope your answer to this question is that you've received 00:08:00.89\00:08:03.56 Him by faith. 00:08:03.59\00:08:04.56 Isn't that right? 00:08:04.57\00:08:05.54 By faith we come to Him and trust in Him. 00:08:05.55\00:08:09.55 So if we received Him by faith then we are also to walk 00:08:09.58\00:08:13.62 with Jesus by faith, Amen? 00:08:13.65\00:08:15.47 This is the key to growing up and maturing in Jesus Christ. 00:08:15.50\00:08:19.68 We do it by faith in the Son of God. 00:08:19.71\00:08:22.11 Verse 7 in Colossians 2 said that we are rooted 00:08:22.14\00:08:25.11 and established in the faith. 00:08:25.14\00:08:26.35 Being rooted is a symbol, or another way of saying 00:08:26.38\00:08:29.83 getting our nourishment from our faith. 00:08:29.86\00:08:32.13 Just as a seedling is rooted in the soil, 00:08:32.16\00:08:34.85 getting its nourishment from it, so our roots in Jesus are found 00:08:34.88\00:08:40.15 within our faith in Jesus, which provides us our 00:08:40.18\00:08:43.18 spiritual nourishment. 00:08:43.21\00:08:44.49 Over and over Jesus used things in nature 00:08:46.21\00:08:49.38 to teach us spiritual lessons. 00:08:49.41\00:08:50.69 One such lesson I've learned at home over the years, 00:08:50.72\00:08:53.87 while tending to our lawn, is that when you don't water 00:08:53.90\00:08:57.50 your grass during the hot summer months, the grass turns brown 00:08:57.53\00:09:01.03 and goes dormant. 00:09:01.07\00:09:02.04 It doesn't actually die, that is unless the ground gets that hot 00:09:02.05\00:09:06.61 and dry that the roots themselves dry up 00:09:06.64\00:09:09.10 and wither away. 00:09:09.13\00:09:10.10 When the lawn does go dormant, you can begin watering it again 00:09:10.11\00:09:15.03 and over a period of a few weeks the grass will return again. 00:09:15.06\00:09:18.71 The grass plants wake up out of their dormancy 00:09:18.74\00:09:21.51 and send up new blades of grass; new shoots, 00:09:21.54\00:09:23.94 turning your lawn green again. 00:09:23.97\00:09:26.26 Now another side effect of not properly caring for your lawn 00:09:26.29\00:09:31.11 is that weeds will begin taking it over. 00:09:31.14\00:09:33.63 It almost seems that the hotter, and the dryer the weather gets, 00:09:33.66\00:09:37.96 the more the weeds will grow, but when the grass is full 00:09:37.99\00:09:41.86 and healthy it forms a barrier against the weeds. 00:09:41.89\00:09:45.08 That's not to say that you won't get weeds, but with the proper 00:09:45.11\00:09:48.92 proper fertilization and weed control, you'll have a beautiful 00:09:48.95\00:09:51.64 looking lawn again. 00:09:51.67\00:09:52.64 The fertilizer adds the right amount of nutrients to the lawn 00:09:52.65\00:09:56.49 so that it will grow full and healthy with a deep vibrant 00:09:56.50\00:10:00.45 green color, and along with the watering this will produce 00:10:00.55\00:10:04.21 the best lawn. 00:10:04.24\00:10:05.21 Now let me tell you about weed control. 00:10:05.24\00:10:08.84 Weed control comes in two basic forms. 00:10:08.87\00:10:11.14 The first is what's known as a pre-emergent. 00:10:11.17\00:10:13.90 It's normally put down early in the spring, and it prevents many 00:10:13.93\00:10:17.13 of the weeds from growing in the first place. 00:10:17.16\00:10:19.20 The second type of weed control is targeted at weeds that have 00:10:19.23\00:10:23.20 already come up. 00:10:23.21\00:10:24.34 Some varieties of weeds are very hard to control 00:10:24.37\00:10:27.28 once they emerge. 00:10:27.31\00:10:28.28 Crabgrass is one of them, so you really want to use 00:10:28.29\00:10:32.25 the pre-emergent early in the spring to keep this crabgrass 00:10:32.28\00:10:36.85 from growing up into your lawn. 00:10:36.88\00:10:38.20 Here's how I think about my lawn as compared 00:10:38.23\00:10:41.21 to my spiritual life. 00:10:41.24\00:10:42.31 When I keep myself in God's word it's like watering the lawn 00:10:42.34\00:10:46.11 to keep it alive and growing. 00:10:46.14\00:10:47.52 When I follow God's word by putting into action, 00:10:47.55\00:10:50.91 within my life, those things that I'm learning in the Bible, 00:10:50.94\00:10:54.10 then that's like applying the fertilizer to the lawn, 00:10:54.13\00:10:57.04 making my spiritual life vibrant and causing it to grow 00:10:57.07\00:11:00.73 and mature at an even faster rate. 00:11:00.76\00:11:02.78 This gives my spiritual life a special vibrancy, color, 00:11:02.81\00:11:06.92 and enthusiasm. 00:11:06.95\00:11:08.21 Now when I read the Bible and God shows me that I have some 00:11:08.24\00:11:13.00 weeds growing in my life, then I need to apply the weed control, 00:11:13.03\00:11:17.26 which is, by faith, taking God at His word, and yielding my 00:11:17.29\00:11:21.42 sin, or my temptation over to Him, and allowing Him to 00:11:21.45\00:11:25.30 eradicate that weed, or that sin, from my life. 00:11:25.33\00:11:28.42 Thus it is that the Christian grows and matures as he reads 00:11:28.45\00:11:33.93 and applies God's word to His life. 00:11:33.96\00:11:35.69 Through faith, just as you receive Jesus Christ, 00:11:35.72\00:11:39.06 so you walk in Him. 00:11:39.09\00:11:40.67 Steps to Christ, page 47 gives us some very important 00:11:42.36\00:11:45.31 information to guide us in being able to do this, 00:11:45.34\00:11:47.80 and I'd like to share it with you. 00:11:47.83\00:11:49.51 It says: 00:11:49.54\00:11:50.51 Now wouldn't that be a great way to start out your day? 00:12:28.35\00:12:31.70 When I read this I liken it to the pre-emergent weed control. 00:12:31.73\00:12:35.87 If we give ourselves to God first thing in the morning 00:12:35.90\00:12:39.36 we are taking the first step each day to prevent 00:12:39.39\00:12:42.97 the spiritual weeds from coming up in the first place. 00:12:43.00\00:12:45.53 In closing this episode I'd like to leave you with one last quote 00:12:47.93\00:12:52.08 from Steps to Christ, and it's found on page 48, which says: 00:12:52.11\00:12:55.60 Let the mind dwell upon His love, upon the beauty, 00:12:55.63\00:12:59.37 the perfection of His character. 00:12:59.40\00:13:01.28 Christ in His self-denial, Christ in His humiliation, 00:13:01.31\00:13:04.99 Christ in His purity and holiness, 00:13:05.02\00:13:07.74 Christ in His matchless love, 00:13:07.77\00:13:09.84 this is the subject of the soul's contemplation. 00:13:09.87\00:13:12.93 It is by living Him, copying Him, depending wholly upon Him 00:13:12.96\00:13:18.59 that you are to be transformed into His likeness. 00:13:18.62\00:13:21.89 Well now, to be found in the likeness of Jesus, 00:13:21.92\00:13:26.31 to have the character of Jesus really is the ultimate goal now, 00:13:26.34\00:13:30.11 isn't it? 00:13:30.14\00:13:31.11 To be growing and maturing in Jesus each and every day 00:13:31.12\00:13:35.24 is the will of God for His people. 00:13:35.27\00:13:37.74 May God's rich blessings be upon you, and your loved ones 00:13:37.77\00:13:42.00 as you find yourself walking with Jesus. 00:13:42.03\00:13:45.08 When you walk with Jesus your faith will grow, 00:13:47.84\00:13:51.04 and His love will guide you in life. 00:13:51.07\00:13:54.26 We pray you will draw closer to Jesus every day. 00:13:54.29\00:13:57.50 Our next episode shows us how to be happy while working 00:13:57.53\00:14:03.15 for the happiness of others. 00:14:03.18\00:14:04.89 Please be sure to join us.
