Welcome! 00:00:15.86\00:00:17.06 I'm Eric Garloff, your host for Walking With Jesus. 00:00:17.10\00:00:19.38 Today we're going to be talking about the consecrated life. 00:00:19.41\00:00:22.11 Just what do we mean when we use that phrase, 00:00:22.14\00:00:24.94 a consecrated life? 00:00:24.97\00:00:26.16 What does it mean to be consecrated? 00:00:26.19\00:00:28.71 When I opened up my dictionary I found a couple of definitions 00:00:28.74\00:00:32.72 which could help us understand this term more completely. 00:00:32.75\00:00:35.49 One of them said "to make or declare sacred," 00:00:35.52\00:00:39.25 but is this really possible? 00:00:39.28\00:00:41.29 Can we really make our lives sacred? 00:00:41.32\00:00:44.89 Here's the problem each of us faces. 00:00:44.92\00:00:49.22 The Bible says we are all sinners. 00:00:49.25\00:00:51.76 Not one of us is righteous. 00:00:51.79\00:00:53.68 This being true, how can we who are defiled by sin 00:00:53.71\00:00:57.78 make ourselves sacred? 00:00:57.81\00:00:59.26 In order for our lives to be made sacred we need the one 00:00:59.29\00:01:03.92 who is sacred to make us sacred, and that one is Jesus. 00:01:03.95\00:01:07.74 The book of James 1:17 says every good gift and every 00:01:07.77\00:01:12.11 perfect gift is from above. 00:01:12.14\00:01:13.95 God is the source of every good gift. 00:01:13.98\00:01:16.51 It's God who justifies us. 00:01:16.54\00:01:18.65 It's God who makes us righteous. 00:01:18.68\00:01:20.71 It's God who gives us victory over sin. 00:01:20.74\00:01:23.50 It's God who forgives us. 00:01:23.53\00:01:24.95 It's God who cleanses us. 00:01:24.98\00:01:27.14 And, likewise, it's God who gives us the power to live a 00:01:27.17\00:01:31.25 sacred, or sanctified, or consecrated life. 00:01:31.28\00:01:33.76 But don't let anyone trick you into believing that there's 00:01:33.79\00:01:37.57 nothing for you to do in the work of consecrating 00:01:37.60\00:01:40.00 your life to God. 00:01:40.03\00:01:41.00 Now here's the other definition I found in the dictionary. 00:01:41.01\00:01:44.57 It said, "to devote solemnly to a purpose. " 00:01:44.60\00:01:48.80 With that thought in mind, when we consecrate ourselves 00:01:48.83\00:01:52.19 to God we would say our life is purposely, and solemnly 00:01:52.22\00:01:56.67 dedicated to God. 00:01:56.70\00:01:58.06 These words describe the decision of a person 00:01:58.09\00:02:01.53 which is not to be taken lightly. 00:02:01.56\00:02:03.64 To paraphrase the Bible, it's the decision of putting your 00:02:03.67\00:02:07.09 hand to the plow and not turning back. 00:02:07.12\00:02:09.84 We all have our part to play in the great war that's going on 00:02:11.33\00:02:14.72 between good and evil. 00:02:14.75\00:02:15.73 That war is being waged over who you're going to 00:02:15.76\00:02:18.52 give your heart to. 00:02:18.55\00:02:19.52 And what you do in life reflects the character of the one 00:02:19.53\00:02:23.49 who has your heart. 00:02:23.52\00:02:24.73 In the book of Jeremiah 29:13 we read these words 00:02:24.76\00:02:29.71 of encouragement, which is God's promise to us. 00:02:29.74\00:02:32.57 It says: 00:02:32.60\00:02:33.77 Let me repeat that last phrase again. 00:02:39.02\00:02:41.46 It says, "when you shall search for me with all your heart. " 00:02:41.49\00:02:45.92 Yes, the whole heart must be yielded and given to God 00:02:45.95\00:02:49.13 where the change we seek can never be worked out within us. 00:02:49.16\00:02:52.55 That change is the process of restoration, or of having our 00:02:52.58\00:02:56.72 characters restored in the likeness of God's character. 00:02:56.75\00:02:59.56 This work of restoration requires a transformation 00:02:59.59\00:03:02.64 of our entire being. 00:03:02.67\00:03:04.37 Therefore we must yield our entire being to God 00:03:04.40\00:03:08.13 who alone can perform this transformation. 00:03:08.16\00:03:10.80 I'd like to share these statements with you 00:03:10.83\00:03:13.65 quoting from the book Steps to Christ page 27. 00:03:13.68\00:03:16.65 He cannot accept an homage that is not willingly 00:03:54.20\00:03:57.48 and intelligently given. 00:03:57.51\00:03:59.11 A mere forced submission would prevent all real development 00:03:59.14\00:04:04.23 of mind and character. 00:04:04.26\00:04:05.81 It would make man a mere automaton. 00:04:05.84\00:04:08.96 Such is not the purpose of the creator. 00:04:08.99\00:04:11.43 So you see my friends, when we consecrate ourselves to God 00:04:38.75\00:04:43.35 and ask Him to renew us, there's going to be a struggle involved; 00:04:43.38\00:04:47.44 a struggle with self. 00:04:47.47\00:04:49.79 Somebody asked, "How can I know for sure that God really 00:04:52.19\00:04:55.72 exists and the Bible is true before I commit to Him?" 00:04:55.75\00:05:00.36 Now that's a good question because you don't want to 00:05:00.39\00:05:03.72 blindly follow Him if there's no real evidence of His 00:05:03.75\00:05:06.75 existence or power, now do you? 00:05:06.78\00:05:08.24 Of course not! 00:05:08.27\00:05:09.76 Now some have said that when you become a Christian 00:05:09.79\00:05:14.14 you check your brains at the door; implying that God doesn't 00:05:14.17\00:05:17.40 exist, or that you're dumb. 00:05:17.43\00:05:18.57 But this is so far from the truth because Christianity 00:05:18.60\00:05:22.75 is for thinking people with an honest heart. 00:05:22.78\00:05:25.64 God has given us so many proofs and evidences 00:05:25.67\00:05:29.30 of His existence, and His love for us. 00:05:29.33\00:05:31.86 In fact, let's talk about a few of these right now 00:05:31.89\00:05:34.97 and see the evidence for God's existence. 00:05:35.00\00:05:39.06 There are three evidences that I'd like to share with you 00:05:39.09\00:05:42.14 very quickly. 00:05:42.17\00:05:43.31 And if you want to look into these areas with an honest heart 00:05:43.34\00:05:46.94 you'll find out that there's an abundance of evidence 00:05:46.97\00:05:50.35 to support God's existence and His love for mankind. 00:05:50.38\00:05:53.69 First we'll briefly talk about the biological chance 00:05:53.72\00:05:57.68 of a single living cell forming all by itself, on its own, 00:05:57.71\00:06:00.87 without God. 00:06:00.90\00:06:01.87 Secondly we'll talk about how archeology has proven the 00:06:01.88\00:06:05.63 historical accuracy of the Bible. 00:06:05.66\00:06:07.49 And thirdly through Bible prophecy we'll see how God 00:06:07.52\00:06:11.29 accurately predicted the future of world empires hundreds 00:06:11.32\00:06:15.02 of years in advance. 00:06:15.05\00:06:16.23 These three areas: biology, archeology, and prophecy 00:06:16.26\00:06:20.79 cover the present, the past, and the future. 00:06:20.82\00:06:23.94 Evidence Number One: We'll start with the present. 00:06:25.96\00:06:29.00 The very fact that life exists today is one of the strongest 00:06:29.03\00:06:33.53 arguments in favor of the God of creation. 00:06:33.56\00:06:35.80 So let's ask ourselves with an honest heart, "Can a living 00:06:35.83\00:06:40.99 cell evolve all by itself?" 00:06:41.02\00:06:42.77 This can best be demonstrated by looking at the mathematical 00:06:42.80\00:06:46.53 possibility of life forming by itself. 00:06:46.56\00:06:48.98 Mathematicians consider the probability of anything greater 00:06:49.01\00:06:52.60 than ten to the fiftieth power as being an impossibility. 00:06:52.63\00:06:57.15 Now I've read numerous calculations that the 00:06:57.18\00:06:59.99 probability for even the most basic protein to form on its 00:07:00.02\00:07:03.21 own would be around ten to the power of one hundred and 00:07:03.25\00:07:06.55 thirteen or so. 00:07:06.58\00:07:07.72 And the probability of a single living cell forming all 00:07:07.75\00:07:11.59 by itself is in the area of ten to the power of forty thousand. 00:07:11.62\00:07:16.34 And that's just to make one living cell, which is the basic 00:07:16.37\00:07:20.15 building block of life. 00:07:20.18\00:07:21.34 Once you comprehend that number then multiply it by the 00:07:21.37\00:07:25.23 fact that humans have two hundred and ten different 00:07:25.26\00:07:28.13 cell types in their body. 00:07:28.16\00:07:29.50 Evidence Number Two: Looking into the past and seeing that 00:07:31.17\00:07:34.86 archeology has proven the accuracy of the Bible. 00:07:34.89\00:07:37.74 Many critics have attacked the Bible as a document that 00:07:37.77\00:07:40.78 can't be trusted. 00:07:40.81\00:07:41.78 In years gone by they have cited cities and people 00:07:41.79\00:07:45.27 which were found in the Bible and had no proof 00:07:45.30\00:07:47.74 of their existence. 00:07:47.77\00:07:48.74 They pointed to these as errors in the scriptures 00:07:48.75\00:07:51.59 saying the Bible can't be trusted. 00:07:51.62\00:07:54.03 Then as time passed archeological discoveries were 00:07:54.06\00:07:57.49 made which validated and vindicated the accuracy 00:07:57.53\00:08:00.89 of the Bible by finding evidence of these people groups 00:08:00.93\00:08:04.11 and their cities silencing the critics. 00:08:04.14\00:08:06.93 One such example of this was the skeptics claim against 00:08:06.96\00:08:11.56 the existence of the Syrian king named Sargon 00:08:11.59\00:08:14.79 as found in the book of Isaiah 20:1. 00:08:14.82\00:08:17.72 Then many years later Sargon's palace was discovered 00:08:17.75\00:08:20.71 in course about Iraq. 00:08:20.74\00:08:21.74 Its city was built by King Sargon II, who reigned 00:08:21.77\00:08:25.52 from 722 to 705 B.C. 00:08:25.55\00:08:28.01 The capture of Ashdod mentioned in Isaiah was recorded 00:08:28.04\00:08:32.05 on the palace walls. 00:08:32.08\00:08:33.24 One of the inscriptions found there read as follows: 00:08:33.27\00:08:36.48 Sargon king of Assyria who conquered Samaria 00:08:36.51\00:08:39.92 and the entire region of Israel. 00:08:39.93\00:08:41.95 He who made captives of Ashdod. 00:08:41.98\00:08:44.15 Friends, there are many such instances in archeology 00:08:44.18\00:08:47.93 which have vindicated the accuracy of the Bible. 00:08:47.96\00:08:50.88 The Bible is true, and it can be trusted. 00:08:50.91\00:08:53.42 Just because the Bible mentions something that we currently 00:08:53.45\00:08:56.76 have no proof of its existence does not mean that the Bible 00:08:56.79\00:09:00.02 is not true. 00:09:00.05\00:09:01.02 It simply means that we have not found it and dug it up yet. 00:09:01.03\00:09:04.56 Evidence Number Three: The foretelling of the future 00:09:07.08\00:09:11.17 is where the divine inspiration of the Bible is proven 00:09:11.20\00:09:14.87 through the fulfillment of prophecy. 00:09:14.90\00:09:16.57 Only an all knowing God is capable of predicting 00:09:16.60\00:09:20.54 the rise and fall of nations hundreds of years before they 00:09:20.55\00:09:24.31 ever even came into power. 00:09:24.34\00:09:26.01 Perhaps one of the best examples of this is found in the second 00:09:26.04\00:09:29.64 chapter of the book of Daniel. 00:09:29.67\00:09:31.18 I encourage you to pick up your Bible and read Daniel chapter 2 00:09:31.21\00:09:35.46 very, very carefully. 00:09:35.49\00:09:37.11 Then understand that Daniel chapter 2 was written about 00:09:37.14\00:09:40.61 600 years before the birth of Christ. 00:09:40.64\00:09:43.21 With this in mind, crack open your old high school history 00:09:43.24\00:09:46.81 books, or go down to your local library and compare 00:09:46.84\00:09:49.56 the succession of world empires beginning with Babylon. 00:09:49.59\00:09:53.29 You'll soon see that the Bible accurately predicted the Medes 00:09:53.32\00:09:56.92 and the Persians as Babylon's successors. 00:09:56.95\00:09:59.41 Then Greece was to be next, and after that it would be Rome 00:09:59.44\00:10:03.48 with both its eastern and western powers. 00:10:03.51\00:10:06.21 Then Rome would fall and be divided into ten kingdoms. 00:10:06.24\00:10:09.77 We really don't have the time to go through all of these 00:10:09.80\00:10:12.65 things right now, so if you'd like to learn more, and if you'd 00:10:12.68\00:10:16.54 like to understand the symbology of the image in Daniel chapter 2 00:10:16.57\00:10:21.39 than I'd like to encourage you to seek out a Seventh-day 00:10:21.42\00:10:24.55 Adventist church near you, and find someone to give you a 00:10:24.58\00:10:27.59 set of Bible studies which explains in clear language 00:10:27.62\00:10:30.88 the things that you're seeking to understand. 00:10:30.91\00:10:34.12 The bottom line is this, my friend, God does exist, 00:10:34.15\00:10:37.33 and the Bible is true. 00:10:37.36\00:10:38.64 You can give your life to God and consecrate yourself, 00:10:38.67\00:10:41.36 or devote yourself to Him for a purpose. 00:10:41.39\00:10:43.45 Quoting again from Steps to Christ, page 30, 00:10:43.48\00:10:46.36 You cannot change your heart. 00:11:37.77\00:11:39.27 You cannot of yourself give to God its affections, 00:11:39.30\00:11:42.96 but you can choose to serve Him. 00:11:42.99\00:11:45.04 You can give Him your will. 00:11:45.07\00:11:47.20 He will then work in you to will and to do according 00:11:47.23\00:11:51.25 to His good pleasure. 00:11:51.28\00:11:52.25 It's here where "the rubber meets the road". 00:12:28.75\00:12:31.33 No matter what you may have done in the past, 00:12:31.36\00:12:34.04 God will accept you if you consecrate, or dedicate 00:12:34.07\00:12:37.51 yourself to Him. 00:12:37.54\00:12:38.51 Exercising your power of will, and being willing to be made 00:12:38.52\00:12:43.97 willing is the place to begin. 00:12:44.00\00:12:46.13 Surrender yourself to God and ask Him to live out 00:12:47.86\00:12:50.43 His life within you. 00:12:50.46\00:12:51.56 A man once said to Jesus, "Lord I believe, 00:12:51.59\00:12:54.22 but help thou my unbelief. " 00:12:54.25\00:12:56.13 In other words He believed to a certain point, but he wanted 00:12:56.16\00:12:59.84 to strengthen his belief in Jesus. 00:12:59.87\00:13:01.59 It would be well for each of us to have this type of an open 00:13:01.62\00:13:05.31 heart towards God. 00:13:05.35\00:13:06.32 Now in the closing minute I'd like to offer a prayer 00:13:06.33\00:13:09.88 on your behalf. 00:13:09.91\00:13:11.00 If this is your desire, than make it your own 00:13:11.03\00:13:13.96 prayer to God. 00:13:13.99\00:13:14.96 Father, we come to You as we are. 00:13:14.97\00:13:19.81 We ask You to forgive us of our sins and to work within us, 00:13:19.84\00:13:23.54 restoring us to the image of your dear Son Jesus. 00:13:23.57\00:13:26.55 We are willing to do what You ask us to do. 00:13:26.58\00:13:28.93 We desire the power of Your Holy Spirit in our lives 00:13:28.96\00:13:31.59 to bring about the change we need to make. 00:13:31.62\00:13:34.36 So to this end, Lord, please give us Your Holy Spirit. 00:13:34.39\00:13:38.44 In Jesus' name, Amen. 00:13:38.47\00:13:40.44 May God bless you and be with you as are found 00:13:40.47\00:13:43.48 walking with Jesus. 00:13:43.51\00:13:44.88 When we walk with Jesus His love, mercy, and compassion 00:13:46.89\00:13:51.46 guides us along the path of life. 00:13:51.47\00:13:54.48 Our next program explores our faith and acceptance in action. 00:13:54.51\00:14:00.16 Please be sure to join us for this important message. 00:14:00.19\00:14:03.98
