Hello, I'm Eric Garloff, your host for Walking With Jesus. 00:00:14.31\00:00:18.02 This is our fourth program in this series of thirteen, 00:00:18.05\00:00:21.36 and we pray you'll be able to watch them all. 00:00:21.39\00:00:23.77 Today we're answering the question, If God knows 00:00:23.80\00:00:27.49 everything about us, He also knows our sins. 00:00:27.52\00:00:30.16 So why then do we need to confess our sins to God? 00:00:30.19\00:00:34.08 Well, the short answer is found in Proverbs 28:13 which says, 00:00:34.11\00:00:39.34 He that covers his sins shall not prosper, but everyone who 00:00:39.37\00:00:42.79 confesses and forsakes them shall have mercy. 00:00:42.82\00:00:45.48 Now, as I said, this is the short answer, 00:00:45.51\00:00:49.12 but we're going to dig a little deeper into this question 00:00:49.15\00:00:51.30 and uncover some nuggets of truth, which will greatly help 00:00:51.33\00:00:54.71 you in your walk with Jesus. 00:00:54.75\00:00:56.64 Now, let's begin our session today with a word of prayer, 00:00:56.67\00:01:00.05 shall we? 00:01:00.08\00:01:01.05 Lord God, we come to You today and ask that You would give us 00:01:01.06\00:01:06.07 Your Holy Spirit to open our minds to this message. 00:01:06.10\00:01:10.16 And if need be, subdue our hearts and our ego, 00:01:10.19\00:01:13.76 that we would be found walking in Your ways, and living a life 00:01:13.79\00:01:18.20 filled with Your peace, joy, and happiness. 00:01:18.23\00:01:21.66 In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. 00:01:21.69\00:01:23.99 Alright, let's get started, shall we? 00:01:25.23\00:01:27.60 Do you know that there is a time to confess our faults 00:01:27.63\00:01:31.22 to one another, as well as a time to confess our sins to God? 00:01:31.25\00:01:34.59 If you've done harm to your neighbor, or your friend, 00:01:34.62\00:01:38.00 you should confess your fault to him or her, and ask for his 00:01:38.03\00:01:41.45 or her forgiveness. 00:01:41.48\00:01:42.45 It is then your neighbor's duty to freely forgive you. 00:01:42.46\00:01:45.81 The Apostle James wrote in James 5:16 the following: 00:01:45.84\00:01:50.58 So not only are we to confess our faults to one another, 00:01:58.02\00:02:00.89 but we are also told to pray for one another. 00:02:00.90\00:02:04.07 Once you've made things right between you and your neighbor, 00:02:04.10\00:02:07.54 you're then counseled to seek God's forgiveness 00:02:07.57\00:02:10.08 for your own sin. 00:02:10.11\00:02:11.96 For in hurting your neighbor, you have also injured 00:02:11.99\00:02:15.34 your neighbor's Creator. 00:02:15.37\00:02:16.47 Your neighbor can forgive your faults, but only God 00:02:16.50\00:02:21.23 can forgive your sin. 00:02:21.26\00:02:22.40 In the book, Steps to Christ, page 24 we read the following: 00:02:22.43\00:02:26.69 True confession is always of a specific character 00:03:03.57\00:03:06.76 and acknowledges particular sins. 00:03:06.79\00:03:08.49 They may be of such a nature as to be brought before God only. 00:03:08.52\00:03:13.82 They may be wrongs that should be confessed to individuals 00:03:13.85\00:03:16.96 who have suffered injury through them. 00:03:16.99\00:03:19.01 Or they may be of a public character and should then 00:03:19.04\00:03:22.70 be publicly confessed. 00:03:22.73\00:03:24.10 But all confession should be definite and to the point, 00:03:24.13\00:03:28.24 acknowledging the very sin's of which you are guilty. 00:03:28.25\00:03:32.58 Now that gives you something to think about, and it does make 00:03:33.52\00:03:36.58 sense, doesn't it? 00:03:36.61\00:03:37.58 After all, if the shoe was on the other foot, if someone did 00:03:37.59\00:03:41.21 something to hurt you, you'd want that person to come to you 00:03:41.24\00:03:44.29 and admit what they had done, wouldn't you? 00:03:44.32\00:03:46.76 Of course you would! 00:03:46.79\00:03:48.08 So we should be mindful to how we ourselves would like to be 00:03:48.73\00:03:54.00 treated if someone did something against us. 00:03:54.03\00:03:56.04 If you keep this principle in mind throughout your walk 00:03:56.07\00:04:00.39 with Jesus, it will prove to be a tremendous spiritual blessing 00:04:00.42\00:04:04.48 to you. 00:04:04.51\00:04:05.48 Let me share an illustration with you of something that I 00:04:05.49\00:04:09.04 had done when I was sixteen years old. 00:04:09.07\00:04:11.53 It all started out with a propensity to drive fast, 00:04:11.56\00:04:15.65 and to hang out with my buddies who drove fast cars. 00:04:15.68\00:04:19.40 I had a rather small car with a large engine, and I liked to 00:04:19.43\00:04:23.64 drive fast on the back country roads where I grew up. 00:04:23.67\00:04:26.03 I remember one turn that I used to make at 60 miles an hour. 00:04:26.06\00:04:30.50 I'd say it was about a seventy-five degree turn 00:04:30.53\00:04:32.98 with a tight radius. 00:04:33.01\00:04:34.28 And when I went around the turn, my tires would squeal 00:04:34.31\00:04:37.93 on the asphalt, or on the street. 00:04:37.96\00:04:39.72 That was a sign to me that if I went any faster the back of my 00:04:39.75\00:04:44.30 car just might start skidding out and cause me to crash. 00:04:44.34\00:04:47.57 Well, about half a mile farther down the road from where 00:04:47.60\00:04:51.65 this turn was, was another turn which was quite gradual 00:04:51.66\00:04:56.10 and non-threatening. 00:04:56.13\00:04:57.40 Or so I thought! 00:04:57.43\00:04:58.89 Anyway, it was dark and I was driving much faster than anyone 00:04:58.92\00:05:04.02 should have been driving. 00:05:04.05\00:05:05.02 And as I entered this turn my car hit some small gravel stones 00:05:05.03\00:05:09.36 along the edge of the road. 00:05:09.39\00:05:10.48 Those stones caused the back of my car to skid out. 00:05:10.49\00:05:14.65 Now the front of my car pretty much stayed on the road. 00:05:14.68\00:05:18.47 I was really side ways though. 00:05:18.50\00:05:20.26 The back of the car was skidding out across the entrance 00:05:20.29\00:05:23.52 to a driveway, and it was coming around to my right. 00:05:23.55\00:05:27.03 Then all of a sudden I heard a loud crashing noise as my car 00:05:27.06\00:05:30.52 hit something. 00:05:30.55\00:05:31.52 It felt very solid. 00:05:31.53\00:05:33.57 In the dark, and out of the corner of my eye, I thought 00:05:35.27\00:05:38.25 I saw something being thrown up into the yard. 00:05:38.28\00:05:40.95 At the same time, the impact of hitting whatever it was that I 00:05:40.98\00:05:44.35 hit actually threw my car back towards the road. 00:05:44.38\00:05:47.58 As I was trying to gain control over the car, I could feel a 00:05:47.61\00:05:51.31 sense of fear and anger coming over me. 00:05:51.34\00:05:53.62 Fear for not knowing what it was that I had hit, and for what my 00:05:53.65\00:05:58.56 father was going to say in the morning when he saw my car, 00:05:58.59\00:06:00.99 and anger because I was driving so carelessly, and there was 00:06:01.02\00:06:05.46 no one else to blame but myself. 00:06:05.49\00:06:07.05 I didn't stop right away because my car was still going about 00:06:08.43\00:06:10.80 50 miles an hour after I got back onto the road. 00:06:10.83\00:06:14.48 So when I got down the road about a mile or so, I found a 00:06:14.51\00:06:17.73 place that I could pull over and I took a good look at my car. 00:06:17.76\00:06:20.64 When I saw the damage that was done to it, my thoughts began to 00:06:20.67\00:06:24.59 to turn away from the car, and I began thinking about what had 00:06:24.62\00:06:27.93 just happened. 00:06:27.96\00:06:28.93 What was it that I really hit? 00:06:28.94\00:06:30.38 Then my heart started pounding all over again. 00:06:30.41\00:06:33.66 Then I started to fear for another reason. 00:06:33.69\00:06:35.65 I was contemplating the possibility that someone could 00:06:35.68\00:06:38.95 have been walking at night, and perhaps I hit them. 00:06:38.99\00:06:41.50 When this came across my mind, I knew that I had to go back 00:06:41.53\00:06:45.31 there immediately and see what it was that I hit. 00:06:45.34\00:06:48.29 If it was a person, then they would need help immediately, 00:06:48.32\00:06:52.51 but then again I'd already lost a lot of critical time 00:06:52.54\00:06:56.35 looking at my car. 00:06:56.38\00:06:57.35 So I went back to the scene of the accident, and my heart was 00:06:57.36\00:07:01.33 thumping in my chest. 00:07:01.36\00:07:02.53 I was trying to see what was lying in the front yard. 00:07:02.54\00:07:06.00 And as I'm approaching, I'm saying, What is it? 00:07:06.03\00:07:09.04 Was it a person or was it something else? 00:07:09.07\00:07:11.50 It was hard to see in the dark. 00:07:11.53\00:07:14.23 Then as I approached I saw something, but I didn't quite 00:07:14.24\00:07:18.82 know until I got closer. 00:07:18.85\00:07:20.30 Finally I could see well enough to determine it wasn't a person. 00:07:20.33\00:07:25.41 It was a demolished mail box! 00:07:25.44\00:07:27.73 This was no ordinary mail box because it was mounted on a 00:07:27.76\00:07:31.60 steel I-beam, and it had been cemented into the ground with 00:07:31.63\00:07:34.70 about 120 pounds of cement. 00:07:34.73\00:07:36.42 That's why the impact was so great against the car. 00:07:36.45\00:07:39.54 I went home that night, and the next day, after telling my 00:07:39.57\00:07:42.80 parents what had happened, I went back to that house and I 00:07:42.83\00:07:45.92 knocked on the door. 00:07:45.93\00:07:46.90 I told the owners that it was I who destroyed their mail box. 00:07:46.91\00:07:51.09 I asked them to forgive me and I offered to pay for the damages. 00:07:51.12\00:07:55.19 The man of the house said that he was planning on going out and 00:07:55.22\00:07:59.16 building a new mail box, and in addition to paying for it, 00:07:59.19\00:08:02.32 I could help him make it as well. 00:08:02.35\00:08:04.78 You know, admitting that I did wrong and correcting what I had 00:08:04.81\00:08:08.90 done made me feel good inside. 00:08:08.93\00:08:11.46 Not good that I did it, but good that I corrected it. 00:08:11.49\00:08:14.15 If I hadn't done that I'd still be living with the guilt today 00:08:14.18\00:08:17.22 of what I had done. 00:08:17.25\00:08:18.27 And a life of guilt is a life of regrets, not to mention the 00:08:18.30\00:08:22.27 negative health impact that guilt brings also. 00:08:22.31\00:08:25.64 In order for confession to be acceptable unto God, 00:08:26.40\00:08:28.94 one must show repentance and make decided changes in his, 00:08:28.97\00:08:32.34 or her, life. 00:08:32.37\00:08:33.34 We should seek to purge from our lives everything which is 00:08:33.35\00:08:35.95 offensive to God. 00:08:36.07\00:08:37.04 Indeed, these will be the actions of a repentant sinner. 00:08:37.05\00:08:41.39 To seek and correct anything known to be wrong within 00:08:41.42\00:08:44.58 the character, and to make amends wherever possible. 00:08:44.61\00:08:48.42 Now Ezekiel 33:15 puts it this way: 00:08:48.45\00:08:52.29 Now isn't that good news? 00:09:04.98\00:09:06.17 Turning once again to the book, Steps to Christ, page 25, 00:09:06.20\00:09:09.70 we read the following: 00:09:09.71\00:09:10.68 In other words, Eve was saying to God, Why did you make 00:10:24.40\00:10:27.88 the serpent? 00:10:27.89\00:10:28.86 Why did you allow him into the garden? as if He were 00:10:28.87\00:10:32.71 responsible for her sin. 00:10:32.74\00:10:34.57 Now I'll tell you what's truly amazing about confession, 00:10:36.22\00:10:39.59 and it's found in John 1:9 which says, If we confess our sins 00:10:39.62\00:10:43.02 He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, 00:10:43.05\00:10:45.51 and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 00:10:45.54\00:10:47.79 The one thing you can count on, my friend, is that God says 00:10:47.82\00:10:51.98 what he means, and He means what He says. 00:10:52.01\00:10:54.73 Let me say it again, God says if we confess our sins, 00:10:54.76\00:10:59.23 He is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins, 00:10:59.26\00:11:01.73 and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 00:11:01.76\00:11:04.62 Isn't that a wonderful promise? 00:11:04.65\00:11:06.45 If we confess, He will forgive and cleanse us. 00:11:06.48\00:11:10.61 That means we don't have to walk around with the guilt on our 00:11:10.64\00:11:14.40 shoulders anymore. 00:11:14.43\00:11:15.40 We can be free from its burden, and not worry about it again. 00:11:15.41\00:11:19.65 Amen? 00:11:19.68\00:11:20.65 This brings us back to the original question that we had 00:11:20.66\00:11:24.38 asked in the beginning of this program. 00:11:24.41\00:11:26.21 You remember it, don't you? 00:11:26.24\00:11:28.12 We asked, If God knows everything about us, 00:11:28.15\00:11:31.00 then why do we need to confess our sins to Him? 00:11:31.03\00:11:33.72 Well, the short answer in Proverbs 28:13 gives us the 00:11:33.75\00:11:38.43 answer that we're looking for. 00:11:38.46\00:11:39.83 So our confession opens the door for God's mercy. 00:11:46.88\00:11:50.90 Unconfessed sin becomes a stumbling block to us. 00:11:50.93\00:11:54.60 It burdens us down, and it separates us from God. 00:11:54.63\00:12:00.24 And if we don't have God's mercy then how shall we live with Him? 00:12:00.27\00:12:05.06 Through a confession, God's mercy is extended to us, 00:12:05.09\00:12:08.05 and we are forgiven. 00:12:08.08\00:12:09.54 The burden of our guilt is removed. 00:12:09.57\00:12:11.48 Confession is like medicine to our soul. 00:12:11.51\00:12:14.42 It brings health and healing of spirit. 00:12:14.45\00:12:17.30 God wants us to confess, not for His benefit, but for ours. 00:12:17.33\00:12:21.32 He wants us to confess our sins so we can have forgiveness 00:12:21.35\00:12:26.23 of our past, fellowship with Him in the present, and everlasting 00:12:26.26\00:12:30.62 life with Him in the future. 00:12:30.65\00:12:32.36 What about you my friend? 00:12:32.39\00:12:33.98 Are there things in your past which you know you've done 00:12:34.01\00:12:38.05 that, perhaps, you have not confessed before? 00:12:38.08\00:12:40.40 Is there something that you did which needs to be set straight? 00:12:40.43\00:12:44.86 Is there some burden that's been weighing you down? 00:12:44.89\00:12:48.61 Do you feel the guilt constantly nagging at you, prompting you to 00:12:48.64\00:12:53.57 make amends? 00:12:53.60\00:12:54.57 If you have any of these thoughts or feelings, 00:12:54.58\00:12:56.98 then I would like to suggest to you that it's the Holy Spirit of 00:12:57.01\00:13:00.55 God bringing these things to your memory, giving you the 00:13:00.56\00:13:03.94 opportunity to confess them, and as best as you can 00:13:03.97\00:13:08.00 make restitution for them. 00:13:08.03\00:13:09.83 God really does have your best interest on His heart. 00:13:09.86\00:13:12.91 He wants to spend eternity with you in heaven. 00:13:12.94\00:13:16.27 And while you're here on this Earth, He wants you to live 00:13:16.30\00:13:19.49 a healthy and happy life. 00:13:19.52\00:13:21.22 God does not want us to be bound down by the burdens 00:13:21.25\00:13:24.73 which tie us down due to our unconfessed sin. 00:13:24.76\00:13:27.69 Therefore, as we close this program, I ask you to pray about 00:13:27.72\00:13:32.91 these things, and give them to God. 00:13:32.94\00:13:35.21 Your burden will be lifted, and you'll feel so much better 00:13:35.24\00:13:39.17 about them. 00:13:39.20\00:13:40.17 Follow that still small voice speaking to your conscience, 00:13:40.18\00:13:45.02 and do the right thing. 00:13:45.05\00:13:46.53 Confess your faults one to another, and confess your sins 00:13:46.56\00:13:50.70 to God, for only He can forgive them. 00:13:50.73\00:13:54.23 May God bless you and your loved ones. 00:13:54.26\00:13:56.79 Growing in your walk with Jesus is very important, 00:13:58.16\00:14:01.19 so we ask you to read your Bible every day, and practice what 00:14:01.22\00:14:05.83 you learn on a daily basis. 00:14:05.86\00:14:08.06 Watch Walking With Jesus again for our next episode, 00:14:08.09\00:14:12.37 The Consecrated Life. 00:14:12.40\00:14:14.38
