Welcome, I'm Eric Garloff, your host for Walking With Jesus. 00:00:15.62\00:00:18.84 In our first two programs we spoke about God's enduring love 00:00:18.87\00:00:22.44 for man and our great need for Jesus. 00:00:22.47\00:00:25.66 We closed our last program with prayer, and if you prayed that 00:00:25.69\00:00:29.27 prayer with a sincere heart, God has forgiven you of your sins, 00:00:29.30\00:00:33.08 and given you the robe of Christ's righteousness. 00:00:33.11\00:00:36.36 In today's program titled, What Is Repentance, 00:00:36.39\00:00:40.06 we're going to take a look at how we can continue our walk 00:00:40.09\00:00:43.68 with Jesus and draw closer to Him every day. 00:00:43.71\00:00:47.13 I'd like to begin by sharing with you a passage from 00:00:47.17\00:00:51.16 Matthew 21:28-30. 00:00:51.19\00:00:53.60 In this passage Jesus is asking a question. 00:00:53.63\00:00:56.38 He says, 00:00:56.41\00:00:57.38 Well, of course, it was the first son. 00:01:17.28\00:01:19.46 The one who said he would not go, but then afterward repented, 00:01:19.49\00:01:23.93 and went to work in his father's vineyard. 00:01:23.96\00:01:26.22 Concerning repentance, the book Steps to Christ on page 12 00:01:26.25\00:01:29.92 says the following: 00:01:29.95\00:01:30.92 Now that makes things so much clearer. 00:02:41.66\00:02:43.57 True repentance is not being sorry, as to avoid the 00:02:43.60\00:02:47.66 punishment for some wrong doing, but rather it's being sincerely 00:02:47.69\00:02:51.01 sorry for the act of doing wrong itself. 00:02:51.04\00:02:53.73 Perhaps one of the best examples of repentance found in the Bible 00:02:55.79\00:02:59.23 comes to us through one of King David's prayers found in 00:02:59.26\00:03:02.72 Psalms 51:1-14. 00:03:02.75\00:03:06.36 This psalm says: 00:03:06.39\00:03:07.65 Wow! 00:03:52.37\00:03:53.34 As you read this prayer of David's you can really tell that 00:03:53.35\00:03:56.91 David was sincerely sorry for what he had done, 00:03:56.94\00:03:59.64 and in just a few minutes we're going to examine his prayer 00:03:59.67\00:04:02.98 a bit more deeply to see what we can learn from it. 00:04:02.99\00:04:06.12 But before we do this it's vitally important to understand 00:04:06.15\00:04:10.22 that a repentance like David's is not humanly possible. 00:04:10.25\00:04:14.07 Now I'm not saying you can't repent like him, I'm saying it's 00:04:14.10\00:04:17.10 not humanly possible. 00:04:17.13\00:04:18.10 The only way that David could have had such a repentance as 00:04:18.11\00:04:21.59 this is to be connected with God, as He is the one who gives 00:04:21.62\00:04:25.31 us repentance. 00:04:25.34\00:04:26.31 Take some time to think about this because many people today 00:04:26.32\00:04:29.64 think that they first must repent before coming to God. 00:04:29.67\00:04:33.62 If that were the case none would ever come to Him 00:04:33.65\00:04:36.75 because repentance is a gift from God. 00:04:36.78\00:04:38.84 Now it's true that repentance must take place before our sins 00:04:38.87\00:04:42.85 can be forgiven, but repentance is not to be an obstacle 00:04:42.88\00:04:46.94 standing between the sinner and the Savior. 00:04:46.97\00:04:50.31 It is Christ which leads us to genuine repentance, therefore, 00:04:50.34\00:04:55.35 if we don't come to Him first, then we won't be led to 00:04:55.38\00:04:58.21 repentance. 00:04:58.24\00:04:59.21 Acts 5:31 makes it clear while speaking of Jesus. 00:04:59.22\00:05:01.64 It says: 00:05:01.67\00:05:02.64 This text clearly says that Jesus gave repentance to Israel. 00:05:07.65\00:05:12.06 Another passage from the book, Steps to Christ, on page 15 00:05:12.09\00:05:15.18 states the following: 00:05:15.21\00:05:16.56 Thus we see that by beholding what Christ has done for us, 00:06:03.07\00:06:07.44 we are drawn to Him, and if we don't resist that drawing, 00:06:07.47\00:06:11.27 our hearts will be softened and changed. 00:06:11.30\00:06:13.80 We have also seen that a person can't truly repent unless God 00:06:13.83\00:06:18.04 has been working in his, or her, heart to give them repentance. 00:06:18.07\00:06:21.94 We've also seen that a person doesn't wait to have repentance 00:06:21.97\00:06:26.05 before coming to God because that would be putting the cart 00:06:26.08\00:06:29.54 before the horse. 00:06:29.57\00:06:30.59 We must first come to God, or be drawn to Him by His Holy Spirit, 00:06:30.62\00:06:35.29 in order to receive repentance from Him, because it is God who 00:06:35.32\00:06:39.98 works on our heart and gives us repentance. 00:06:40.01\00:06:42.91 A few minutes ago we read King David's prayer of repentance 00:06:44.74\00:06:48.48 from Psalm 51. 00:06:48.51\00:06:49.54 And now I'd like to dig into his prayer of repentance 00:06:49.57\00:06:52.40 and see what gems of truth we can learn and apply to our 00:06:52.43\00:06:55.60 own lives. 00:06:55.63\00:06:56.60 This prayer of David's was uttered after Nathan the prophet 00:06:56.61\00:06:59.82 disclosed to David that God knew all about what he did; 00:06:59.85\00:07:03.12 namely coveting his neighbors wife, Bathsheba, then plotting 00:07:03.15\00:07:07.96 to have her husband Uriah killed so he could marry her and cover 00:07:07.99\00:07:11.16 up her pregnancy. 00:07:11.19\00:07:12.19 When I break down this prayer of repentance, I tend to see 00:07:12.22\00:07:16.48 twelve different characteristics, or components, 00:07:16.51\00:07:19.06 of David's repentance. 00:07:19.09\00:07:20.25 Some may see more, others, perhaps, see less. 00:07:20.28\00:07:23.24 The number isn't important. 00:07:23.25\00:07:25.38 What is important is an understanding that all of these 00:07:25.41\00:07:29.33 things are mingled, and entertained, in David's prayer 00:07:29.36\00:07:32.45 as a result of David's sin, and of God's righteousness, mercy, 00:07:32.48\00:07:37.68 and justice. 00:07:37.71\00:07:38.68 What's important is that we learn something from David's 00:07:38.69\00:07:42.22 prayer of repentance. 00:07:42.25\00:07:43.25 The first line I'd like to consider in David's prayer says: 00:07:43.26\00:07:47.29 Have mercy upon me, Oh God, according to thy 00:07:47.32\00:07:49.99 loving-kindness. 00:07:50.03\00:07:51.00 David doesn't say, Have mercy on me God because I'm, 00:07:51.01\00:07:54.83 basically, a good guy at heart. 00:07:54.87\00:07:56.47 He's not trying to make any excuses for what he's done. 00:07:56.50\00:08:00.05 No, David lays open the truth of the matter fully conscious 00:08:00.08\00:08:05.55 of his great sin against Uriah and Bathsheba, and so he cries 00:08:05.58\00:08:10.03 out for mercy to the God of loving kindness. 00:08:10.06\00:08:13.17 David says, According to the multitude of your tender 00:08:13.20\00:08:15.94 mercies, blot out my transgressions. 00:08:15.97\00:08:18.69 Here David's pleading with the Lord, in His infinite mercy, 00:08:18.72\00:08:23.29 to remove his sins from the record book which has recorded 00:08:23.30\00:08:26.67 his sinful actions. 00:08:26.70\00:08:28.12 Continuing, David says, For I acknowledge my transgressions, 00:08:31.49\00:08:35.84 and my sin is ever before me. 00:08:35.87\00:08:38.07 The knowledge of his wrong doing, his plotting, 00:08:38.10\00:08:41.59 and deliberate actions are pressing down hard on his mind, 00:08:41.62\00:08:46.30 not giving him any rest. 00:08:46.33\00:08:48.31 It's a burden. 00:08:48.34\00:08:49.45 It's a burden of guilt. 00:08:49.48\00:08:50.59 The guilt of his sin is weighing him down so he cries out to God 00:08:50.62\00:08:54.72 in his prayer. 00:08:54.75\00:08:55.72 Purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean. 00:08:55.73\00:08:58.44 Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow. 00:08:58.47\00:09:00.99 Hyssop was used in ceremonial cleansing, and so David, 00:09:01.02\00:09:05.65 seeking to be clean from the depths of the sin that he has 00:09:05.68\00:09:08.23 marred himself with, uses the language which employs the 00:09:08.26\00:09:11.65 strongest symbol of cleansing power for his defilement. 00:09:11.68\00:09:15.33 He then says, Create in me a clean heart, Oh God, and renew 00:09:15.36\00:09:19.37 a right spirit within me. 00:09:19.40\00:09:21.05 David understood that before a new spirit could be placed 00:09:21.08\00:09:24.86 within him, that he would first need to have a clean vessel 00:09:24.89\00:09:29.32 in which to contain it. 00:09:29.35\00:09:31.14 His heart, the thoughts of his mind, would not be cleansed by 00:09:31.17\00:09:35.84 any power of his own. 00:09:35.87\00:09:37.26 They could only be cleansed by the power of God. 00:09:37.29\00:09:40.35 And God is the only one who could then renew a right spirit 00:09:40.38\00:09:44.63 within him. 00:09:44.66\00:09:45.63 He is the only one who could give him a just and steadfast 00:09:45.64\00:09:49.33 spirit; one which would lead him to obedience, justice, love, 00:09:49.36\00:09:54.11 and mercy within his own life. 00:09:54.14\00:09:56.54 The consequences of not having a renewed heart is that sin 00:09:58.59\00:10:03.42 separates the sinner from God, therefore David cries out to God 00:10:03.45\00:10:06.77 and says, Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy 00:10:06.80\00:10:11.14 Holy Spirit from me. 00:10:11.17\00:10:12.34 Although he knew that his actions had grieved the 00:10:12.37\00:10:16.19 Holy Spirit, he could not bear the thought of not having God's 00:10:16.22\00:10:20.18 Spirit to lead him and guide him. 00:10:20.21\00:10:22.13 And so he asks to be restored with these words: Restore unto 00:10:22.16\00:10:26.92 me the joy of thy salvation. 00:10:26.95\00:10:28.98 True joy and happiness is only found when a person is walking 00:10:29.01\00:10:33.68 with God. 00:10:33.71\00:10:34.68 Thus he shows his desire to return to that experience of joy 00:10:34.69\00:10:38.60 which he shared with God before he sinned. 00:10:38.61\00:10:41.00 He goes on to say, And uphold me with thy free spirit. 00:10:41.03\00:10:45.22 The words, free spirit, here, are better translated as 00:10:45.99\00:10:49.75 willing spirit. 00:10:49.78\00:10:50.75 In other words, David desires to have a frame of mind that is 00:10:50.76\00:10:54.81 ready and willing to obey God, and to be willing to serve God 00:10:54.84\00:10:58.83 in whatever He asks him to do. 00:10:58.86\00:11:01.09 Next is a phrase, deliver me from blood guiltiness Oh God. 00:11:02.74\00:11:06.32 This appears to be a direct reference to the blood on 00:11:06.35\00:11:08.91 David's hands from plotting the death of Uriah, and he follows 00:11:08.94\00:11:12.51 the phrase, deliver me from blood guiltiness, Oh God, 00:11:12.54\00:11:15.46 with, thou God of my salvation. 00:11:15.49\00:11:17.84 David realizes that what he had done under the law would also 00:11:17.87\00:11:22.36 require his own death, and here he pleads with God that he would 00:11:22.39\00:11:26.66 be delivered from his guiltiness and retain salvation, 00:11:26.69\00:11:30.13 which is only found in God. 00:11:30.16\00:11:31.53 Then David says, And my tongue shall sing aloud 00:11:31.56\00:11:35.15 of thy righteousness. 00:11:35.18\00:11:36.50 This is the natural response for one who has experienced 00:11:36.53\00:11:40.36 the love, mercy, and forgiveness of God. 00:11:40.39\00:11:42.61 The desire to let others know what God has done for you 00:11:42.64\00:11:46.32 is natural, and God is pleased to see you share the stories 00:11:46.35\00:11:50.24 of His love and mercy with others. 00:11:50.27\00:11:52.07 Now the beauty of this passage is that God did forgive David, 00:11:52.10\00:11:56.82 and he was restored with a new heart, and he once again found 00:11:56.85\00:12:02.13 the joy of God's salvation. 00:12:02.16\00:12:03.52 The scriptures say in 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, 00:12:03.55\00:12:07.59 he is faithful and just to forgive to forgive us our sins, 00:12:07.62\00:12:10.47 and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 00:12:10.50\00:12:12.87 This is a promise, and the strength of a promise is based 00:12:12.90\00:12:16.74 on the one who gives it. 00:12:16.77\00:12:18.29 Therefore, you can know that your sins will be forgiven 00:12:18.32\00:12:21.73 when you come to Him in repentance. 00:12:21.76\00:12:24.07 From the book, Steps to Christ, page 19, we read this passage 00:12:24.10\00:12:29.62 concerning procrastination: 00:12:29.65\00:12:31.06 II Corinthians 6:2 says: Behold, now is the accepted time. 00:12:59.60\00:13:04.04 Behold, now is the day of our salvation. 00:13:04.07\00:13:07.31 In Hebrews 3: 7, 8 says: Today, if you will hear his 00:13:07.34\00:13:11.35 voice, harden not your hearts. 00:13:11.38\00:13:13.11 As I begin to close, I'd like to ask you to study the 00:13:13.14\00:13:17.00 Bible prayerfully. 00:13:17.03\00:13:18.00 It's God's word speaking directly to your soul. 00:13:18.01\00:13:21.64 That word presents you with the law of God 00:13:21.67\00:13:24.50 and the life of Jesus. 00:13:24.53\00:13:25.50 These convict us of sin, and reveal to us the way 00:13:26.01\00:13:29.52 of salvation. 00:13:29.55\00:13:30.52 May your prayer be the prayer of David found in Psalms 51. 00:13:30.53\00:13:33.91 Create in me a clean heart, Oh God, and renew a right spirit 00:13:33.94\00:13:37.42 within me. 00:13:37.45\00:13:38.42 Now may God's rich blessings be upon you and your loved ones. 00:13:38.43\00:13:43.30 Walking with Jesus is most rewarding. 00:13:43.33\00:13:48.57 In Him we find eternal life. 00:13:48.60\00:13:51.53 We pray you draw close to Jesus every day as you study 00:13:51.56\00:13:55.78 the Bible. 00:13:55.81\00:13:56.78 Visit with us again when we ask the question, If God already 00:13:56.79\00:14:01.36 knows, why confess? 00:14:01.39\00:14:03.20
