You know, when you're working the dream, 00:00:01.36\00:00:03.30 the struggle is also real. 00:00:03.33\00:00:07.20 You have to be determined. 00:00:07.24\00:00:09.60 You have to work hard. 00:00:09.64\00:00:13.21 You need to be compassionate. 00:00:13.24\00:00:15.68 Set goals and be timely. 00:00:15.71\00:00:19.01 Stay focused. And reach high. 00:00:19.05\00:00:22.22 You need all this, 00:00:22.25\00:00:23.59 and the lord to come together to make you a better person 00:00:23.62\00:00:26.99 while you are working the dream. 00:00:27.02\00:00:28.36 Hello, and welcome to "Working the dream." 00:00:31.19\00:00:34.30 I'm your host, Eric Kelly. 00:00:34.33\00:00:35.76 And today, we're going to share tips on an issue 00:00:35.80\00:00:38.23 that all of us sooner or later must deal with, 00:00:38.27\00:00:42.10 and that is workplace competition. 00:00:42.14\00:00:45.54 Now sometimes, 00:00:45.57\00:00:46.94 workplace competition is beneficial 00:00:46.98\00:00:49.58 because it can spur a commitment 00:00:49.61\00:00:51.88 to self-improvement. 00:00:51.91\00:00:53.62 Now it goes with that saying 00:00:53.65\00:00:54.98 that financial incentives and bonuses 00:00:55.02\00:00:58.32 will always get the competition going. 00:00:58.35\00:01:00.79 However, those who see the bigger picture 00:01:00.82\00:01:03.73 may take the competition as an opportunity 00:01:03.76\00:01:06.53 to better themselves 00:01:06.56\00:01:07.90 and the process of winning the competition. 00:01:07.93\00:01:10.37 Self improvements may include actions 00:01:10.40\00:01:12.67 like changing work habits, to be more organized, 00:01:12.70\00:01:15.54 to be more creative, and thorough, 00:01:15.57\00:01:18.34 however, always aiming to achieve the goals 00:01:18.37\00:01:21.84 and perform a higher quality of work. 00:01:21.88\00:01:25.11 Now companies love competition and here's why? 00:01:25.15\00:01:29.18 Your company whether it is privately held 00:01:29.22\00:01:31.69 or publicly traded 00:01:31.72\00:01:33.82 is always, and I do mean always, 00:01:33.86\00:01:37.23 looking for a way to make itself more profitable. 00:01:37.26\00:01:40.50 There are only two ways to do this. 00:01:40.53\00:01:42.26 Upgrade the quality of company processes, 00:01:42.30\00:01:45.77 and or upgrade the quality of the employee workforce. 00:01:45.80\00:01:49.70 Now if I had a dime 00:01:49.74\00:01:51.07 for all of the times I've been in meetings, 00:01:51.11\00:01:52.84 and heard senior executives cast doubt 00:01:52.87\00:01:55.31 that they had the right people in the right places 00:01:55.34\00:01:57.65 to become more efficient, to become more profitable, 00:01:57.68\00:02:00.55 I would have a considerable amount of cash. 00:02:00.58\00:02:03.45 I can recall in more than a few instances, 00:02:03.49\00:02:05.85 the senior team gave the command. 00:02:05.89\00:02:08.22 It's time to "upgrade the herd." 00:02:08.26\00:02:11.93 Now while that may not sound good to those of us 00:02:11.96\00:02:14.63 that are the herd, 00:02:14.66\00:02:16.43 working out harder to contribute 00:02:16.46\00:02:18.33 to our respective organizations, 00:02:18.37\00:02:20.17 it does give you insight 00:02:20.20\00:02:21.77 into just how competitive the workplace is. 00:02:21.80\00:02:25.27 So whether you are attempting to get a promotion 00:02:25.31\00:02:27.88 or just trying to hold on to the job that you have, 00:02:27.91\00:02:31.81 it's in your best interest 00:02:31.85\00:02:33.18 to foster good healthy competition. 00:02:33.21\00:02:37.29 Now the executive belief is cream rises to the top. 00:02:37.32\00:02:43.19 So let's break this down as to how the company benefits 00:02:43.22\00:02:46.19 when workers are competitive. 00:02:46.23\00:02:49.03 First of all, there's a higher level of productivity. 00:02:49.06\00:02:53.17 Tough competition among employees 00:02:53.20\00:02:55.47 breeds productivity in the workplace. 00:02:55.50\00:02:58.21 The presence of competitors 00:02:58.24\00:03:00.24 aiming for similar goals like promotions or salary increases, 00:03:00.28\00:03:05.01 it naturally pushes people to be work oriented, 00:03:05.05\00:03:07.78 to be more diligent and focused 00:03:07.82\00:03:09.78 in achieving those goals that are in front of them. 00:03:09.82\00:03:12.45 In fact, they're going to function 00:03:12.49\00:03:14.19 and in most excellent manner 00:03:14.22\00:03:15.82 because they want to impress the boss. 00:03:15.86\00:03:17.86 And they really want to finish on top of everyone else. 00:03:17.89\00:03:20.66 Now this kind of healthy competition 00:03:20.70\00:03:22.63 helps ease management's concerns 00:03:22.66\00:03:24.77 over wasted resources or idle workers. 00:03:24.80\00:03:28.17 Competition also increases 00:03:28.20\00:03:30.34 the level of organizational efficiency. 00:03:30.37\00:03:33.74 Competition pushes employees to meet deadlines 00:03:33.78\00:03:36.31 and adhere to management standards. 00:03:36.34\00:03:38.95 And they avoid 00:03:38.98\00:03:40.32 creating a poor impression with the bosses. 00:03:40.35\00:03:42.72 And really everybody wants to gain the trust 00:03:42.75\00:03:45.35 and confidence of upper management. 00:03:45.39\00:03:48.66 Competition helps boost companies to higher profits. 00:03:48.69\00:03:51.99 So naturally, higher productivity 00:03:52.03\00:03:54.30 and efficiency 00:03:54.33\00:03:55.66 will help increase the company's net income. 00:03:55.70\00:03:59.13 Competition drives cooperative teamwork. 00:03:59.17\00:04:02.07 If the competition is structured 00:04:02.10\00:04:03.44 so that the team wins rather than just an individual, 00:04:03.47\00:04:06.84 the chances of success of the project 00:04:06.88\00:04:08.61 are very, very high. 00:04:08.64\00:04:10.35 Working in teams will always be a good strategy 00:04:10.38\00:04:13.01 to get things done 00:04:13.05\00:04:14.38 because instead of having only a single person win, 00:04:14.42\00:04:17.42 there's a group of people working together 00:04:17.45\00:04:19.75 to achieve a common goal. 00:04:19.79\00:04:21.69 A team with good dynamics pushes each member 00:04:21.72\00:04:24.83 to continuously improve 00:04:24.86\00:04:26.86 and contribute something to the team. 00:04:26.90\00:04:30.37 We can learn from competitors. 00:04:30.40\00:04:32.43 In any company, 00:04:32.47\00:04:33.80 the work place will always be filled 00:04:33.84\00:04:35.30 with talented individuals 00:04:35.34\00:04:37.21 with different areas of expertise 00:04:37.24\00:04:38.67 and specialization. 00:04:38.71\00:04:40.14 Friendly competition among employees 00:04:40.18\00:04:42.34 will promoting atmosphere that is conducive for learning 00:04:42.38\00:04:45.55 that's because of each other's strengths, 00:04:45.58\00:04:47.58 and also from the failures, we can learn from those, 00:04:47.62\00:04:50.92 each in the best interest of the company. 00:04:50.95\00:04:54.16 So let's take a look 00:04:54.19\00:04:55.72 at how a competitive situation might start. 00:04:55.76\00:04:58.63 Good morning. Good morning. 00:05:11.84\00:05:14.81 So I guess you two heard 00:05:14.84\00:05:16.68 that we parted ways with, Mr. Chaikin. 00:05:16.71\00:05:18.61 That's the best news we've heard all day. 00:05:18.65\00:05:20.55 Well, I think it is King Mufasa master efficiency thing 00:05:20.58\00:05:24.49 just wore people out. 00:05:24.52\00:05:25.99 So he's gone. 00:05:26.02\00:05:28.16 But on the flip side, I have good news. 00:05:28.19\00:05:30.96 I am the new director of Analytics. 00:05:30.99\00:05:34.03 So I'll be your manager again. 00:05:34.06\00:05:36.50 And I'm really happy to do that. 00:05:36.53\00:05:39.67 Shayla, I know that I was kind of hard on you. 00:05:39.70\00:05:42.57 I'm really sorry. 00:05:42.60\00:05:43.94 I just really wanted to push you to greatness. 00:05:43.97\00:05:47.88 It's all in the past, Ms. Greene. 00:05:47.91\00:05:49.71 Call me Cynthia. 00:05:49.74\00:05:51.08 I took a management training class 00:05:51.11\00:05:52.65 in creating a healthy work environment. 00:05:52.68\00:05:54.98 And, Ron, I am really glad to work with you again. 00:05:55.02\00:05:57.89 Same here. 00:05:57.92\00:05:59.45 So, it's great. 00:05:59.49\00:06:01.92 So are we getting a new manager under you to manage us? 00:06:01.96\00:06:05.73 Yeah, actually we're considering all the options. 00:06:05.76\00:06:09.70 We may hire from within, we might promote from within 00:06:09.73\00:06:13.17 or we might hire somebody from the outside. 00:06:13.20\00:06:15.60 We're going to wait and see how that works out. 00:06:15.64\00:06:18.27 Well, I have to take a call. 00:06:18.31\00:06:19.74 But I just wanted to make sure that I gave you guys the news. 00:06:19.77\00:06:24.11 Thanks. Good to see you. 00:06:24.15\00:06:25.48 Good to see you. Have a good day. 00:06:25.51\00:06:26.85 You too. Thanks. 00:06:26.88\00:06:28.22 So did you hear what I heard? Yeah. 00:06:33.02\00:06:35.39 They might be promoting a senior. 00:06:35.42\00:06:38.79 I don't know, why you got that look on your face, 00:06:38.83\00:06:40.80 you know it's going to be me. 00:06:40.83\00:06:42.16 I have been Ms. Greene's favorite forever. 00:06:42.20\00:06:44.33 And I've been here long. 00:06:44.37\00:06:45.70 What does that have to do with anything? 00:06:45.73\00:06:47.80 After you left, all your work got piled on my desk, 00:06:47.84\00:06:50.81 and I handled it. 00:06:50.84\00:06:52.17 She knows I'm more than capable. 00:06:52.21\00:06:53.91 Now what you just saw happens often in the real world. 00:07:16.93\00:07:21.04 The workplace is so incredibly dynamic 00:07:21.07\00:07:23.97 that positions are opening up 00:07:24.01\00:07:25.54 and closing down all of the time. 00:07:25.57\00:07:27.78 In fact, it is very likely 00:07:27.81\00:07:29.34 that based on some issue of turnover in your company, 00:07:29.38\00:07:32.71 a position above your salary grade 00:07:32.75\00:07:34.58 will open up. 00:07:34.62\00:07:35.95 Now when that happens, 00:07:35.98\00:07:37.32 you and your peers 00:07:37.35\00:07:38.85 will want to move up in the organization 00:07:38.89\00:07:40.52 into that open position. 00:07:40.56\00:07:42.32 The recognition feels great 00:07:42.36\00:07:44.56 and the corresponding increase in salary 00:07:44.59\00:07:46.73 is usually pretty good too. 00:07:46.76\00:07:49.30 Yet workplace competition is not always positive. 00:07:49.33\00:07:53.60 It can create unhealthy rivalries 00:07:53.64\00:07:56.30 that result in workers resenting one another. 00:07:56.34\00:07:59.41 It can create a gap between the haves and the have not's. 00:07:59.44\00:08:03.24 And that can prove to be very unhealthy 00:08:03.28\00:08:05.48 in internal work relations. 00:08:05.51\00:08:07.78 Here are some challenges 00:08:07.82\00:08:09.15 that can create a negative workplace 00:08:09.18\00:08:10.62 when there is competition. 00:08:10.65\00:08:12.02 First of all, stress. 00:08:12.05\00:08:14.26 Unhealthy competition increases the level of stress 00:08:14.29\00:08:17.59 with employees. 00:08:17.63\00:08:18.96 This will eventually have negative effects 00:08:18.99\00:08:20.73 for the company 00:08:20.76\00:08:22.10 as stress negatively impacts the concentration of employees 00:08:22.13\00:08:26.23 which leads to increased levels of un-productivity 00:08:26.27\00:08:29.60 and inefficiencies. 00:08:29.64\00:08:31.87 Good employees may leave. 00:08:31.91\00:08:34.98 Some employees, who are not mentally and emotionally tough, 00:08:35.01\00:08:38.25 might succumb to the intense pressure 00:08:38.28\00:08:40.58 brought on by competition, 00:08:40.62\00:08:41.98 and eventually leave the company 00:08:42.02\00:08:43.89 in search of a better workplace environment. 00:08:43.92\00:08:47.26 Often employees might work to bring each other down. 00:08:47.29\00:08:50.23 Competition can bring out the selfish side of everyone 00:08:50.26\00:08:53.50 and this can lead to some pretty ugly consequences. 00:08:53.53\00:08:56.56 Some employees may be too focused 00:08:56.60\00:08:58.27 on achieving company goals 00:08:58.30\00:09:00.04 to the point that they're willing 00:09:00.07\00:09:01.40 to bring each other down just to get ahead. 00:09:01.44\00:09:04.57 And with all of this, team spirit can suffer. 00:09:04.61\00:09:08.94 In the face of competition, 00:09:08.98\00:09:11.55 self always emerges as the central character 00:09:11.58\00:09:15.88 unless of course we're being guided by the Holy Spirit. 00:09:15.92\00:09:19.15 Notions of teams or group, we disregard those, 00:09:19.19\00:09:23.73 because we have to win. 00:09:23.76\00:09:26.03 This also breeds a lack of trust, 00:09:26.06\00:09:28.40 because in an environment 00:09:28.43\00:09:29.76 that fosters unhealthy competition, 00:09:29.80\00:09:32.10 trust is always an issue. 00:09:32.13\00:09:34.27 I mean, the lack of trust in the workplace 00:09:34.30\00:09:35.74 undermines communication among the employees 00:09:35.77\00:09:38.44 and usually destroys work relationships. 00:09:38.47\00:09:42.41 So let's look at how some of this might play out 00:09:42.44\00:09:46.08 with Ron and Shayla. 00:09:46.11\00:09:47.95 Oh, no need to sit. 00:10:41.10\00:10:42.44 I just have some quick news for you. 00:10:42.47\00:10:44.77 We promoted Cassie 00:10:44.81\00:10:46.14 to the position of manager of analytics 00:10:46.17\00:10:48.41 effective next week. 00:10:48.44\00:10:49.78 So you'll be reporting to her. 00:10:49.81\00:10:51.71 Cassie? Are you serious? 00:10:51.75\00:10:53.45 Yes, and I expect you to work with her 00:10:53.48\00:10:55.75 like you worked with me. 00:10:55.78\00:10:57.12 Cassie. 00:11:00.86\00:11:02.26 These two again. 00:11:07.10\00:11:08.90 Are you leaving? 00:11:08.93\00:11:11.33 Yes, I told you, I don't live here. 00:11:11.37\00:11:14.34 Really, I thought you had some secret door 00:11:14.37\00:11:16.74 that led you to some underground Bachelor Pad 00:11:16.77\00:11:18.84 or something. 00:11:18.87\00:11:20.21 Bachelor Pad? 00:11:20.24\00:11:21.58 I am married with seven children. 00:11:21.61\00:11:24.31 I got to get out of here. Look, I've got a minute. 00:11:24.35\00:11:27.15 What's going on? 00:11:27.18\00:11:29.25 Well, sir... I first... 00:11:29.28\00:11:31.69 Figured out. 00:11:31.72\00:11:33.56 The mean manager got fired. 00:11:33.59\00:11:36.12 There is now position open. 00:11:36.16\00:11:39.29 You two both decided 00:11:39.33\00:11:42.16 that you are the best for that position. 00:11:42.20\00:11:46.27 Not thinking of anybody else on the planet that can do that. 00:11:46.30\00:11:50.07 You are a bit egotistical, aren't you? 00:11:50.11\00:11:52.04 But wait we... 00:13:33.07\00:13:38.81 What do you think? 00:13:38.85\00:13:40.25 I'm real, I was just messing with him. 00:13:43.89\00:13:45.89 Okay, 00:13:49.52\00:13:51.16 Ron and Shayla are feeling a bit ashamed 00:13:51.19\00:13:53.33 of their antics with Ms. Greene. 00:13:53.36\00:13:55.93 Ms. Greene will probably pick the ones 00:13:55.96\00:13:57.83 she feels is the most qualified. 00:13:57.87\00:14:00.34 And the most likely to give her 00:14:00.37\00:14:02.14 the skills and behaviors that she needs. 00:14:02.17\00:14:04.77 She's not buying all this buttering up stuff 00:14:04.81\00:14:07.21 and this fake adoration 00:14:07.24\00:14:09.31 which for the record, will not work 00:14:09.34\00:14:11.58 because she's an experienced manager 00:14:11.61\00:14:13.82 and she can smell fake from a mile away. 00:14:13.85\00:14:16.58 So it's not really going to be affected. 00:14:16.62\00:14:18.55 The only thing it's going to do 00:14:18.59\00:14:19.92 is increase the silliness of the competition 00:14:19.95\00:14:22.29 to preschool levels 00:14:22.32\00:14:23.66 where maybe they'll be buying her lunch 00:14:23.69\00:14:25.46 or bring her cupcakes from home every day. 00:14:25.49\00:14:28.63 Now I would like to share a concept 00:14:28.66\00:14:30.67 that is going to be counterintuitive 00:14:30.70\00:14:32.70 to everything that we've ever been taught 00:14:32.73\00:14:34.80 since grade school. 00:14:34.84\00:14:36.17 But here it goes. 00:14:36.20\00:14:37.64 Be the absolute best at what you do 00:14:37.67\00:14:41.11 then let God take care of the politics. 00:14:41.14\00:14:43.58 First of all, 00:14:43.61\00:14:44.95 there are three areas that are being considered 00:14:44.98\00:14:47.55 when our performance is evaluated by our bosses. 00:14:47.58\00:14:51.15 Now you must be at the top of your game 00:14:51.19\00:14:53.86 in these areas 00:14:53.89\00:14:55.42 to even be thought about as valuable to the team. 00:14:55.46\00:14:59.66 First, there's attendance. 00:14:59.69\00:15:02.30 Now some of you might laugh, 00:15:02.33\00:15:03.70 but this area is the number one disciplinary challenge 00:15:03.73\00:15:07.74 for all companies, in all industries. 00:15:07.77\00:15:11.34 Just trying to get people 00:15:11.37\00:15:12.71 to show up for their work schedule 00:15:12.74\00:15:14.81 on their work day they're supposed to be there, 00:15:14.84\00:15:16.98 be punctual when they do it. 00:15:17.01\00:15:19.48 Simply put, if you want to be viewed as an asset 00:15:19.51\00:15:21.55 to your company 00:15:21.58\00:15:22.92 please, be at work 00:15:22.95\00:15:24.49 when you're supposed to be there. 00:15:24.52\00:15:26.19 And by all means, be on time. 00:15:26.22\00:15:28.59 If you are not already doing this 00:15:28.62\00:15:30.63 rest assured, 00:15:30.66\00:15:31.99 you are probably not being viewed 00:15:32.03\00:15:33.80 as a long-term keeper. 00:15:33.83\00:15:35.93 In fact, your job is as secure as a man skating on thin ice, 00:15:35.96\00:15:40.67 holding a heat lamp at high noon. 00:15:40.70\00:15:43.97 Your personal behavior is also very important. 00:15:44.01\00:15:47.14 No matter how smart and capable you are, 00:15:47.18\00:15:50.55 if you've got some flaws in your behavior 00:15:50.58\00:15:52.81 then your chances of being viewed 00:15:52.85\00:15:54.55 as competitive for a position 00:15:54.58\00:15:56.69 or a raise or surviving a downsizing event, 00:15:56.72\00:16:00.29 they're slim. 00:16:00.32\00:16:01.66 If you have an argumentative reputation with your superiors 00:16:01.69\00:16:04.66 even though you were trying to help, 00:16:04.69\00:16:06.56 they may see that behavior as aggressive 00:16:06.59\00:16:08.80 or even insubordinate. 00:16:08.83\00:16:11.37 If you are doing things that are unethical, unsafe, 00:16:11.40\00:16:15.40 or possibly detrimental in any way to the company, 00:16:15.44\00:16:18.94 they will score your conduct as a less than acceptable. 00:16:18.97\00:16:22.88 Not a good place to be 00:16:22.91\00:16:24.25 if you plan on getting any type of positive reward 00:16:24.28\00:16:27.38 from your place of employment. 00:16:27.42\00:16:29.68 The last area that we're going to talk about 00:16:29.72\00:16:31.85 is actual job performance. 00:16:31.89\00:16:34.22 Now let me ask you a few questions. 00:16:34.26\00:16:36.29 And if you can answer, "Yes" to all of them, 00:16:36.32\00:16:38.93 you might be on the path 00:16:38.96\00:16:40.30 to building a pretty decent job reputation. 00:16:40.33\00:16:43.63 So let's look at clerical duties of paperwork. 00:16:43.67\00:16:47.37 Do you have any clerical 00:16:47.40\00:16:49.77 or administrative paperwork duties? 00:16:49.80\00:16:51.74 And if you do, are they always accurate? 00:16:51.77\00:16:55.44 Are they always on time? Are they clear? 00:16:55.48\00:16:58.51 You know, "The dog ate my homework. 00:16:58.55\00:17:00.12 It wasn't effective in school." 00:17:00.15\00:17:01.78 They will even be less effective at your job. 00:17:01.82\00:17:04.92 What about your job knowledge? 00:17:04.95\00:17:06.29 Do you have superior knowledge 00:17:06.32\00:17:08.36 in the area that you're supposed to be working in? 00:17:08.39\00:17:11.29 Now I'm not saying that you need to do a project 00:17:11.33\00:17:14.60 with a know-it-all attitude, 00:17:14.63\00:17:15.96 I'm saying, if we go do our research, 00:17:16.00\00:17:18.73 are you right when you express how something should be done. 00:17:18.77\00:17:21.97 I mean, can we do our research 00:17:22.00\00:17:23.51 and come back with the same information 00:17:23.54\00:17:25.87 that you already know? 00:17:25.91\00:17:27.88 Working safely is important. 00:17:27.91\00:17:30.05 Whether you work inside or outside, 00:17:30.08\00:17:32.21 do you always work safe? 00:17:32.25\00:17:35.48 Your employer loses money paying workman's compensation 00:17:35.52\00:17:39.65 when an employee is injured on the job. 00:17:39.69\00:17:42.42 If you are observed breaking any of the safety rules, 00:17:42.46\00:17:45.69 your stock, it goes down. 00:17:45.73\00:17:48.23 Are you a team player? 00:17:48.26\00:17:50.20 In an era of extraordinary selfishness 00:17:50.23\00:17:53.50 where the accepted mantra is 00:17:53.54\00:17:55.47 me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me first, 00:17:55.50\00:17:58.14 it is refreshing to find someone 00:17:58.17\00:17:59.87 who's a team player. 00:17:59.91\00:18:01.44 Team players help their teammates 00:18:01.48\00:18:03.55 and put their teams before selfish ambition. 00:18:03.58\00:18:07.88 Do you follow company rules? 00:18:07.92\00:18:10.35 Now most company rules and procedures 00:18:10.39\00:18:13.02 were written for a reason. 00:18:13.05\00:18:14.82 Sometimes, we might not agree with them. 00:18:14.86\00:18:16.99 And hopefully, you can plead your case to someone 00:18:17.03\00:18:19.49 that might be able to modify them. 00:18:19.53\00:18:21.66 However, they are called rules for a reason. 00:18:21.70\00:18:24.80 Please, do not disregard them. 00:18:24.83\00:18:27.17 When someone does ignore them, 00:18:27.20\00:18:28.97 it's usually the beginning of the end for that person. 00:18:29.00\00:18:32.14 Someone that consistently decides to make their own path 00:18:32.17\00:18:35.71 away from company guidelines 00:18:35.74\00:18:37.65 is usually considered dangerous. 00:18:37.68\00:18:40.65 Now the ultimate number one reason, 00:18:40.68\00:18:44.02 you needn't concern yourself with competition is that 00:18:44.05\00:18:47.39 you have a God. 00:18:47.42\00:18:48.89 And you have a God that will give you 00:18:48.92\00:18:50.46 what you pray for, 00:18:50.49\00:18:52.53 provided that he deems it good for you. 00:18:52.56\00:18:55.83 For example, a friend of mine one day, 00:18:55.86\00:18:58.23 she asked me to pray for her 00:18:58.27\00:18:59.63 because she was going to apply for a job 00:18:59.67\00:19:02.30 in a specific company. 00:19:02.34\00:19:03.81 And of course, she knew it was God's will 00:19:03.84\00:19:05.17 because the pay was outstanding. 00:19:05.21\00:19:07.94 And the field was one 00:19:07.98\00:19:09.31 in which my friend was extremely knowledgeable. 00:19:09.34\00:19:12.11 So we did, we prayed together about it. 00:19:12.15\00:19:14.38 Now, let me describe her. 00:19:14.42\00:19:15.85 Smart, articulate, well-mannered, well-dressed, 00:19:15.88\00:19:20.02 well-spoken, you get my drift? 00:19:20.06\00:19:22.89 She was qualified 00:19:22.92\00:19:24.26 maybe even too much so for the position. 00:19:24.29\00:19:26.96 So we felt like God can answer this one. 00:19:27.00\00:19:28.90 So we prayed. Time moved on. 00:19:28.93\00:19:31.90 Here's what happened. 00:19:31.93\00:19:33.27 Later on, she relayed to me that she didn't get the job. 00:19:33.30\00:19:36.64 And I was a little stunned also. 00:19:36.67\00:19:38.57 She might have even believed 00:19:38.61\00:19:40.01 that she was beat out by a competing prospect 00:19:40.04\00:19:43.88 who presented better. 00:19:43.91\00:19:46.01 Well, I don't see how that could have been possible. 00:19:46.05\00:19:50.22 Now here's the moral of the story. 00:19:50.25\00:19:52.02 Eventually, she landed a much better job 00:19:52.05\00:19:56.06 than the one she had applied for. 00:19:56.09\00:19:58.76 See, God was in the whole thing from the beginning. 00:19:58.79\00:20:01.83 God wants you to prosper and be successful. 00:20:01.86\00:20:05.17 The issue is we cannot see what he sees. 00:20:05.20\00:20:08.30 So we must trust that He knows the end from the beginning. 00:20:08.34\00:20:12.87 There's a Bible story that I love 00:20:12.91\00:20:14.68 that encourages me when I need to be reminded 00:20:14.71\00:20:17.05 of how God works. 00:20:17.08\00:20:18.41 Okay, once there was this king of Syria, 00:20:18.45\00:20:21.18 and he was at war with Israel. 00:20:21.22\00:20:23.35 So he told his crew, all his generals, 00:20:23.39\00:20:25.39 his mighty fighting men his plans. 00:20:25.42\00:20:27.72 He said, "Here's what we're going to do. 00:20:27.76\00:20:29.42 We're going to camp out over here 00:20:29.46\00:20:31.46 at this little location, 00:20:31.49\00:20:32.89 we just going to lie and wait here. 00:20:32.93\00:20:34.46 And when the children of Israel come by, 00:20:34.50\00:20:37.27 we're going to ambush them, mash them up." 00:20:37.30\00:20:40.64 I mean, it sounded like a workable plan. 00:20:40.67\00:20:42.97 So they all went out to the spot 00:20:43.00\00:20:45.01 and they laid and wait. 00:20:45.04\00:20:47.58 But the Israelites never showed up. 00:20:47.61\00:20:50.55 So they did it again. 00:20:50.58\00:20:51.98 And again, this happened time and time again. 00:20:52.01\00:20:55.15 So the king gets really angry. 00:20:55.18\00:20:57.52 And he's starting to be suspicious. 00:20:57.55\00:20:59.25 So he ask his folks, he said, 00:20:59.29\00:21:00.62 "Now who is the spy that keeps going over to Israel 00:21:00.66\00:21:05.56 and telling them our plans? 00:21:05.59\00:21:07.50 I want to know who's betraying us." 00:21:07.53\00:21:09.53 It's not going to go well for that person. 00:21:09.56\00:21:12.07 Then one of his servers lets the cat out of the bag, 00:21:12.10\00:21:16.07 he said, "Oh, great king, 00:21:16.10\00:21:19.27 there are no traders here, boss. 00:21:19.31\00:21:21.21 But Elijah, the Prophet who is in Israel, 00:21:21.24\00:21:24.88 he tells the king of Israel 00:21:24.91\00:21:26.68 the words you speak in your bedroom." 00:21:26.72\00:21:30.25 Love that story. 00:21:30.29\00:21:32.09 Now if God can communicate to his person, 00:21:32.12\00:21:37.36 what is said in the bedroom of a mighty king, 00:21:37.39\00:21:41.20 do you think He has the ability to communicate to you 00:21:41.23\00:21:44.60 what happens in meetings and boardrooms 00:21:44.63\00:21:46.74 that you're not in. 00:21:46.77\00:21:48.57 Whoever is competing against you 00:21:48.60\00:21:50.41 is so much less powerful 00:21:50.44\00:21:52.47 than the God you're depending on 00:21:52.51\00:21:54.18 for your success. 00:21:54.21\00:21:56.31 Do you believe He is capable 00:21:56.34\00:21:58.11 of impressing upon your heart 00:21:58.15\00:22:00.25 that your next career move should be here or there? 00:22:00.28\00:22:04.02 Now if you said, yes, 00:22:04.05\00:22:05.39 you already know the secret 00:22:05.42\00:22:07.09 that your success is not based on you 00:22:07.12\00:22:09.52 competitively fighting 00:22:09.56\00:22:11.76 and clawing your way up the corporate ladder. 00:22:11.79\00:22:14.36 I can tell you, if you're connected to God 00:22:14.40\00:22:16.87 and you can hear His voice, 00:22:16.90\00:22:19.03 He will guide you to where you need to be 00:22:19.07\00:22:21.84 so that His blessings can flow through to you. 00:22:21.87\00:22:25.71 If you develop an everyday spiritual connecting routine, 00:22:25.74\00:22:31.28 I absolutely guarantee 00:22:31.31\00:22:33.31 that you'll begin to see some positive changes 00:22:33.35\00:22:35.68 in your work and in your life. 00:22:35.72\00:22:38.59 Okay, point number one. 00:22:38.62\00:22:41.16 Read God's Word. 00:22:41.19\00:22:43.93 Wake up daily and spend time reading God's Word. 00:22:43.96\00:22:47.66 Now not reading it through 00:22:47.70\00:22:50.90 trying to get points on your report card, 00:22:50.93\00:22:53.23 but actually read in areas of promise. 00:22:53.27\00:22:56.14 Read in areas that will give you peace. 00:22:56.17\00:22:58.74 And kind of give you an edge at work. 00:22:58.77\00:23:01.18 Do it first thing in the morning. 00:23:01.21\00:23:02.71 I love doing in the morning. It gets the mind right. 00:23:02.74\00:23:05.18 Do it in lunch. 00:23:05.21\00:23:06.55 Let's say, you're having afternoon meeting, 00:23:06.58\00:23:08.05 grab your promised book or the Bible 00:23:08.08\00:23:10.02 and read some verses to shore up your spirit 00:23:10.05\00:23:12.15 before you go to that meeting. 00:23:12.19\00:23:13.96 I woke up a few days ago. 00:23:13.99\00:23:15.52 I had an incredible business challenge. 00:23:15.56\00:23:17.73 And I had to make a decision with some clients. 00:23:17.76\00:23:21.43 And I was facing some potential competition 00:23:21.46\00:23:23.97 in this business situation. 00:23:24.00\00:23:26.07 It could have affected our revenue position 00:23:26.10\00:23:28.30 for the upcoming year. 00:23:28.34\00:23:31.27 I was going to have to deal with the challenge 00:23:31.31\00:23:34.54 with several clients 00:23:34.58\00:23:35.91 based on whatever decision I made. 00:23:35.94\00:23:38.71 So I remembered facing the worry 00:23:38.75\00:23:41.38 and fear of making a wrong decision. 00:23:41.42\00:23:43.65 And I pulled out my trusty old promise book, 00:23:43.69\00:23:46.19 Isaiah 26: 3 and 4, popped up, it says, 00:23:46.22\00:23:49.26 "You will keep him in perfect peace 00:23:49.29\00:23:52.29 whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you." 00:23:52.33\00:23:56.73 "Trust in the Lord forever, 00:23:56.77\00:23:58.27 for the Lord God is an everlasting rock." 00:23:58.30\00:24:01.37 I felt a little better 00:24:01.40\00:24:02.74 and then I read Proverbs 28:5, it said, 00:24:02.77\00:24:04.91 "Those who trust in the Lord will prosper," 00:24:04.94\00:24:07.91 I kept reading in my promise book 00:24:07.94\00:24:10.01 and I found Christ in Matthew 6, 00:24:10.05\00:24:11.95 telling the people, 00:24:11.98\00:24:13.65 "Seek first his kingdom and righteousness, 00:24:13.68\00:24:16.82 and all these things will be added to you as well." 00:24:16.85\00:24:20.72 I had a couple of prayer warriors 00:24:20.76\00:24:22.09 praying also. 00:24:22.12\00:24:23.53 And God showed His hand in that situation. 00:24:23.56\00:24:25.83 Praise Him. 00:24:25.86\00:24:28.06 Pray and listen. 00:24:28.10\00:24:31.50 Pray real prayers. Tell him when you're scared. 00:24:31.53\00:24:36.24 I know many times in church, 00:24:36.27\00:24:37.61 we've heard the Elizabeth in English, 00:24:37.64\00:24:40.24 "Oh, thou who sits high and looks low." 00:24:40.28\00:24:43.45 But God doesn't mind 00:24:43.48\00:24:44.81 if you pray to Him in your natural voice 00:24:44.85\00:24:47.02 and the natural way that you talk. 00:24:47.05\00:24:49.28 It's okay to say, "God, I'm scared." 00:24:49.32\00:24:52.72 It's okay to say, "Oh, man, I'm messed up." 00:24:52.75\00:24:56.83 It's okay, say it to God. 00:24:56.86\00:24:58.33 Because the cute prayers, 00:24:58.36\00:25:00.00 you can leave that for somebody else. 00:25:00.03\00:25:01.96 God already knows everything. 00:25:02.00\00:25:04.10 So let Him hear your petition. 00:25:04.13\00:25:06.53 And then stay long enough to hear his voice 00:25:06.57\00:25:09.64 in your spirit. 00:25:09.67\00:25:11.01 This really, really works. 00:25:11.04\00:25:13.91 In the New Living Translation version of Psalms, 37:3, 00:25:13.94\00:25:19.21 I like to read this, it encourages me. 00:25:19.25\00:25:21.88 And this really is something I want to wake up with 00:25:21.92\00:25:24.79 every day. 00:25:24.82\00:25:26.15 It simply says, "Trust in the Lord, do good. 00:25:26.19\00:25:29.79 And then you will live safely in the land and prosper." 00:25:29.82\00:25:35.16 Let me tell you how 00:25:35.20\00:25:36.63 these beliefs have affected my life several times. 00:25:36.67\00:25:40.24 I'll share one instance. 00:25:40.27\00:25:41.70 Some years ago, 00:25:41.74\00:25:43.07 I was the director of a training department 00:25:43.10\00:25:46.71 in a major Fortune 500 company. 00:25:46.74\00:25:50.61 And mergers were going on, 00:25:50.65\00:25:52.05 and I don't know 00:25:52.08\00:25:53.42 if you really have been caught up in a merger, 00:25:53.45\00:25:55.58 but we merged with another company. 00:25:55.62\00:25:58.15 And the interesting thing is 00:25:58.19\00:25:59.52 when you merge with another company, 00:25:59.55\00:26:00.99 people lose jobs. 00:26:01.02\00:26:02.39 Because you don't need the same amount of people 00:26:02.42\00:26:04.79 that were there to be in the new company. 00:26:04.83\00:26:07.73 So one group of people was let go 00:26:07.76\00:26:10.73 and I was in that lucky group. 00:26:10.77\00:26:13.13 I wasn't worried. 00:26:13.17\00:26:14.50 God had blessed me before 00:26:14.54\00:26:15.87 and He's taking care of me in my entire life. 00:26:15.90\00:26:17.81 So I said, "In a few months, 00:26:17.84\00:26:19.27 I'll be working in somewhere else." 00:26:19.31\00:26:21.44 So a few more months go by 00:26:21.48\00:26:23.48 and I'm not terribly worried, 00:26:23.51\00:26:26.95 but I'm looking for things, 00:26:26.98\00:26:29.52 and I'm believing God's going to take care of me. 00:26:29.55\00:26:33.12 Well, a few more months went by. 00:26:33.15\00:26:35.62 And by now, 00:26:35.66\00:26:37.49 God and I are having some real heart to heart talks. 00:26:37.53\00:26:41.96 In fact, I even tried it out my resume to God. 00:26:42.00\00:26:44.07 I said, "God, when I was in the other company, 00:26:44.10\00:26:46.20 I was having prayers in my office, 00:26:46.23\00:26:48.34 and vice presidents, 00:26:48.37\00:26:49.70 and the higher-ups were coming in, 00:26:49.74\00:26:51.44 and we were sharing Bible scripture." 00:26:51.47\00:26:54.18 Reading your resume to God, yeah. 00:26:54.21\00:26:56.41 And as time went on, 00:26:56.44\00:26:57.78 I really got to the point where I was very, very worried. 00:26:57.81\00:27:02.35 Now here's the interesting thing. 00:27:02.38\00:27:04.45 God had something better for me. 00:27:04.49\00:27:07.52 But I was totally unaware of that. 00:27:07.56\00:27:09.66 Because if the worry set in, 00:27:09.69\00:27:11.49 I wanted to fix things. 00:27:11.53\00:27:13.66 Now here's the thing. 00:27:13.70\00:27:15.03 As I fast forward, a few years later, 00:27:15.06\00:27:17.67 God set it up perfectly 00:27:17.70\00:27:19.40 because what happened was exactly what needed to happen, 00:27:19.43\00:27:22.84 so that it be here right now. 00:27:22.87\00:27:25.37 So, my friends, why spend irredeemable energy 00:27:25.41\00:27:29.24 and vital life force 00:27:29.28\00:27:30.81 trying to climb the company ladder 00:27:30.85\00:27:33.21 when God is showing you that he controls the elevator. 00:27:33.25\00:27:36.62 Remember you may be powerless over what they can do to you 00:27:36.65\00:27:40.92 but they are powerless over what God will do for you. 00:27:40.96\00:27:44.36 Until next time, keep "Working the Dream." 00:27:44.39\00:27:46.96
