You know, when you're working the dream, 00:00:01.36\00:00:03.33 the struggle is oh-so real. 00:00:03.37\00:00:07.24 You have to be determined, 00:00:07.27\00:00:09.70 you have to work hard, 00:00:09.74\00:00:13.27 you need to be compassionate, 00:00:13.31\00:00:15.78 set goals, and be timely, 00:00:15.81\00:00:19.15 stay focused, and reach high. 00:00:19.18\00:00:22.28 You need all this and the Lord to come together 00:00:22.32\00:00:25.45 to make you a better person 00:00:25.49\00:00:27.12 while you're working the dream. 00:00:27.16\00:00:30.79 Hello and welcome to Workin' the Dream. 00:00:30.83\00:00:34.13 I am your host Eric Kelly. 00:00:34.16\00:00:35.50 And today, we are going to share tips 00:00:35.53\00:00:37.63 on what can be some of the most challenging parts 00:00:37.67\00:00:40.84 of all of our jobs, 00:00:40.87\00:00:42.20 and that is dealing with bosses, 00:00:42.24\00:00:44.81 the one person at work that seems to have 00:00:44.84\00:00:46.71 the most impact on us 00:00:46.74\00:00:48.91 is the person we report directly to, 00:00:48.94\00:00:51.08 our supervisor. 00:00:51.11\00:00:52.65 Now how many people go home every day dreading returning 00:00:52.68\00:00:56.32 the next day simply because the relationship 00:00:56.35\00:00:58.89 that they have with their manager is so poor. 00:00:58.92\00:01:01.69 Well, today, we're gonna share proven techniques 00:01:01.72\00:01:04.09 on how you can deal with the power-mad boss, 00:01:04.13\00:01:07.23 the evil boss, and still enjoy your job. 00:01:07.26\00:01:11.23 Now if you've worked one day already in your career, 00:01:11.27\00:01:14.47 you've probably realize that the basic workplace 00:01:14.50\00:01:17.37 is based loosely on military hierarchy. 00:01:17.41\00:01:20.41 There are layers of leaders 00:01:20.44\00:01:21.94 with various ranks passing on directives 00:01:21.98\00:01:24.41 are the most senior leaders to those of less rank. 00:01:24.45\00:01:27.62 In a military system, 00:01:27.65\00:01:28.98 the general would give directives 00:01:29.02\00:01:30.39 to the colonel, 00:01:30.42\00:01:31.75 who would then give directives to the major, 00:01:31.79\00:01:33.56 who would direct the captain, 00:01:33.59\00:01:35.06 who would direct the lieutenant, 00:01:35.09\00:01:36.62 down through the sergeant to the private. 00:01:36.66\00:01:39.39 Now to follow the same structure 00:01:39.43\00:01:40.96 in our corporate model, 00:01:41.00\00:01:42.33 let's use the positions that are most common 00:01:42.36\00:01:44.20 in the business organization. 00:01:44.23\00:01:46.10 First, there is the chairman of the board 00:01:46.13\00:01:48.54 who will give leadership and directives to the CEO, 00:01:48.57\00:01:51.71 who will then do that to the company president, 00:01:51.74\00:01:54.31 who will then direct to vice presidents, 00:01:54.34\00:01:56.38 who then will tell the directors what to do, 00:01:56.41\00:01:58.71 who will then tell the senior managers what to do, 00:01:58.75\00:02:01.35 who will then direct the managers, 00:02:01.38\00:02:03.39 and they will direct the frontline supervisors 00:02:03.42\00:02:06.02 all the way down to the frontline employee. 00:02:06.05\00:02:09.72 Now you may be blessed to have a supervisor 00:02:09.76\00:02:11.86 that is a true Christian. 00:02:11.89\00:02:14.26 Now don't get that confused when somebody goes to church, 00:02:14.30\00:02:17.70 going to church doesn't make one a Christian 00:02:17.73\00:02:20.07 anymore than sitting in a garage 00:02:20.10\00:02:21.44 makes them a Ferrari. 00:02:21.47\00:02:22.90 A true Christian will strive to be fair 00:02:22.94\00:02:25.67 and above board in all their dealings. 00:02:25.71\00:02:28.08 They're going to be honest, they're going to be forthright, 00:02:28.11\00:02:30.55 they'll probability be able to correct you 00:02:30.58\00:02:32.58 and coach you 00:02:32.61\00:02:33.95 without making you feel like two cents 00:02:33.98\00:02:36.55 waiting on change. 00:02:36.58\00:02:38.09 You will be able to see their relationship to God 00:02:38.12\00:02:40.16 by the way they treat people. 00:02:40.19\00:02:41.82 That's how it works. 00:02:41.86\00:02:43.19 Some of the rest of us, 00:02:43.22\00:02:44.56 however, may report to someone 00:02:44.59\00:02:45.99 who demonstrates a lot more intimacy 00:02:46.03\00:02:48.63 with the dark side, 00:02:48.66\00:02:50.67 they may employ yelling 00:02:50.70\00:02:52.03 and belittling and rude put downs 00:02:52.07\00:02:53.94 as a tool for controlling their team. 00:02:53.97\00:02:56.00 Either way, you are going to need divine wisdom to deal 00:02:56.04\00:02:59.37 with everyone on your work team. 00:02:59.41\00:03:02.84 Now while you may think good bosses are a breeze, 00:03:02.88\00:03:05.91 the danger is sometimes when you have a good boss, 00:03:05.95\00:03:08.88 you may take things for granted. 00:03:08.92\00:03:11.05 For granted you ask, yes, for granted. 00:03:11.09\00:03:13.49 When you have a great boss, 00:03:13.52\00:03:14.86 you are not daily reminded of how bad a boss can treat you 00:03:14.89\00:03:17.93 so you may not stay motivated to strengthen your daily 00:03:17.96\00:03:20.63 devotional life, 00:03:20.66\00:03:22.00 you may be tempted to say to yourself that, 00:03:22.03\00:03:23.87 everything is gonna be good today, 00:03:23.90\00:03:25.37 its gonna be cool, so maybe it will never end. 00:03:25.40\00:03:29.34 Wrong, recess does not lasts all day. 00:03:29.37\00:03:33.41 Now for those of us whose boss 00:03:33.44\00:03:35.78 seems to have ingested large quantities 00:03:35.81\00:03:38.11 of Mini Beings, 00:03:38.15\00:03:40.12 we've got some help for you, so hang on. 00:03:40.15\00:03:42.68 I would like to introduce a word 00:03:42.72\00:03:44.72 that explains some behaviors that drive us nuts at work. 00:03:44.75\00:03:48.52 The word is ego. 00:03:48.56\00:03:51.99 The challenge with our egos is that sometimes our egos 00:03:52.03\00:03:55.46 are not supported in reality. 00:03:55.50\00:03:57.80 When this is the case, 00:03:57.83\00:04:00.14 it impacts negatively everyone that surrounds us, 00:04:00.17\00:04:03.24 it unleashes a destructive force, 00:04:03.27\00:04:05.64 in fact the most destructive force 00:04:05.67\00:04:07.54 to all relationships, that's pride. 00:04:07.58\00:04:11.41 The Bible has a lot to tell us 00:04:11.45\00:04:13.42 on how this disease ultimately ends. 00:04:13.45\00:04:16.58 In Galatians 6:3, it says, 00:04:16.62\00:04:18.05 "For if anyone thinks he is something, 00:04:18.09\00:04:20.72 when he is nothing, he deceives himself." 00:04:20.76\00:04:24.56 In proverbs 27:2, it says, 00:04:24.59\00:04:27.40 "Let another praise you, and not your own mouth. 00:04:27.43\00:04:30.67 A stranger, and not your own lips." 00:04:30.70\00:04:33.84 You know, for those who like bragging. 00:04:33.87\00:04:36.17 In Proverbs 16:05, it says, 00:04:36.20\00:04:38.47 "Everyone who is arrogant in his heart 00:04:38.51\00:04:41.31 is an abomination to the Lord. 00:04:41.34\00:04:44.11 Be assured, he will not go unpunished." 00:04:44.15\00:04:48.52 I don't want to get punished 00:04:48.55\00:04:50.42 by the almighty God for being arrogant. 00:04:50.45\00:04:53.59 It doesn't make sense how we can be arrogant 00:04:53.62\00:04:56.12 for some skill or talent or gift 00:04:56.16\00:04:59.79 that we have when it's God 00:04:59.83\00:05:01.86 who decides that we wake up every day 00:05:01.90\00:05:03.80 and use the abilities. 00:05:03.83\00:05:05.17 By the way, 00:05:05.20\00:05:06.53 He gave us the talent in the first place. 00:05:06.57\00:05:08.94 So here is the multimillion-dollar question, 00:05:08.97\00:05:11.94 how can you survive your boss's ego 00:05:11.97\00:05:15.08 when it needs an 18 wheeler to get it into the room? 00:05:15.11\00:05:18.61 And that's been said 00:05:18.65\00:05:19.98 that some people become dictators 00:05:20.02\00:05:21.68 after they get promoted. 00:05:21.72\00:05:24.25 Let me challenge that a little bit. 00:05:24.29\00:05:27.76 They were always dictators. 00:05:27.79\00:05:30.23 Yeah, nothing new, 00:05:30.26\00:05:31.79 they just got promoted and they were giving 00:05:31.83\00:05:34.40 an elevated platform from which to better display 00:05:34.43\00:05:38.30 their dictator-ish-ness. 00:05:38.33\00:05:43.84 Years ago, I ran a training division 00:05:43.87\00:05:45.64 in large company 00:05:45.67\00:05:47.21 and we were instituting a new process, 00:05:47.24\00:05:51.15 and this was smiled upon 00:05:51.18\00:05:53.08 and directed by our senior executive team. 00:05:53.11\00:05:56.99 So we went out to various locations 00:05:57.02\00:05:58.99 and we went to one particular plant manager 00:05:59.02\00:06:01.39 and we told him 00:06:01.42\00:06:02.76 the changes that were coming down, 00:06:02.79\00:06:04.13 and our group was to train it and bring his people along. 00:06:04.16\00:06:07.26 So as we're halfway going through this thing, 00:06:07.30\00:06:10.13 there's a part in it 00:06:10.17\00:06:11.50 where the senior managers wanted 00:06:11.53\00:06:13.44 to be apprised of every change 00:06:13.47\00:06:15.60 that was going on in all of the plants 00:06:15.64\00:06:17.84 because executives want to know 00:06:17.87\00:06:19.21 what's going on or else how can they lead. 00:06:19.24\00:06:21.41 When we got to this one part 00:06:21.44\00:06:22.84 and we said and the plant managers 00:06:22.88\00:06:25.85 will report this up through the lines 00:06:25.88\00:06:28.38 of the organization, and he sat back in his chair, 00:06:28.42\00:06:31.52 he says, "Excuse me, sir. 00:06:31.55\00:06:33.72 I'm god in this organization." 00:06:33.76\00:06:37.09 Well, we responded 00:06:37.13\00:06:38.46 that we were not challenging his exalted position, 00:06:38.49\00:06:43.23 but your bosses want your support 00:06:43.26\00:06:46.77 in rolling out this program. 00:06:46.80\00:06:48.47 Wow! 00:06:48.50\00:06:49.87 This person actually in their mind came up 00:06:49.90\00:06:52.27 with saying I am god? 00:06:52.31\00:06:55.98 When this guy comes back to reality, 00:06:56.01\00:06:58.55 his god complex just got knocked down a peg 00:06:58.58\00:07:01.78 by what his superiors were directing. 00:07:01.82\00:07:05.19 First of all, let's start with a couple of facts 00:07:05.22\00:07:07.56 about all bosses no matter 00:07:07.59\00:07:09.62 how they act and how they treat you, 00:07:09.66\00:07:11.39 they are not god. 00:07:11.43\00:07:13.70 Let's compare. 00:07:13.73\00:07:15.46 God has always been and will always be. 00:07:15.50\00:07:21.10 Your boss on the other hand, 00:07:21.14\00:07:22.60 they were born, and one day, they will die. 00:07:22.64\00:07:27.08 God is all knowing, everything. 00:07:27.11\00:07:32.08 Now your boss may know a lot 00:07:32.11\00:07:34.38 about a lot of different things 00:07:34.42\00:07:37.12 but ask him how many hairs are 00:07:37.15\00:07:40.96 on your head, God knows. 00:07:40.99\00:07:44.33 Your boss may have stock options 00:07:44.36\00:07:46.09 and a hefty bonus, 00:07:46.13\00:07:48.96 but God's got all the wealth of the universe. 00:07:49.00\00:07:52.50 Now let's look at a situation 00:07:52.53\00:07:55.14 where the boss absolutely has an exalted view of himself. 00:07:55.17\00:08:00.94 Let me simplify this for the simple. 00:08:00.98\00:08:03.75 In most areas of this company, 00:08:03.78\00:08:07.05 it is lead, follow, or get out of the way, 00:08:07.08\00:08:09.68 but not in this department, not in my department. 00:08:09.72\00:08:12.55 In my department, 00:08:12.59\00:08:13.92 it's follow or get out of the way. 00:08:13.96\00:08:17.03 And the reason why is because I am the king, 00:08:17.06\00:08:20.40 I am the king of this department 00:08:20.43\00:08:22.56 and all of the employees are like little ants 00:08:22.60\00:08:25.17 in my yard that bother me. 00:08:25.20\00:08:28.07 I am like Mufasa, the Lion King. 00:08:28.10\00:08:32.34 I am as sure as I'm standing here, 00:08:32.37\00:08:36.48 Michael Jermaine Jackson taken, 00:08:36.51\00:08:41.12 and I am the boss here, 00:08:41.15\00:08:43.59 and you will do what I tell you to do 00:08:43.62\00:08:47.19 because I am 00:08:47.22\00:08:50.13 the master of efficiency. 00:08:50.16\00:08:56.26 You got it? 00:08:56.30\00:08:57.63 Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee, 00:08:57.67\00:09:00.20 I'm the master of efficiency. 00:09:00.24\00:09:03.91 You got a question? No, it's more like a statement. 00:09:03.94\00:09:07.18 Oh, good, because questions bother me, 00:09:07.21\00:09:09.04 questions question my authority. 00:09:09.08\00:09:14.78 Wow, went from one crazy boss to another. 00:09:14.82\00:09:17.52 I just got promoted, 00:09:17.55\00:09:18.89 so you're saying this is the norm 00:09:18.92\00:09:20.26 for bosses around here? 00:09:20.29\00:09:21.62 I hope not. 00:09:21.66\00:09:22.99 I don't know what's going on here, 00:09:23.02\00:09:24.36 but I don't like talking, 00:09:24.39\00:09:25.73 when I am doing a meeting, I don't like talking. 00:09:25.76\00:09:28.06 Where you talking about me? 00:09:28.10\00:09:29.43 If you were talking about me, 00:09:29.46\00:09:31.33 then you're in some kind of trouble. 00:09:31.37\00:09:34.30 What is your name? Maleek. 00:09:34.34\00:09:37.37 Are you new here? 00:09:37.41\00:09:39.57 Actually, we're all new to your group. 00:09:39.61\00:09:41.51 What happen to the rest of it, 00:09:41.54\00:09:42.88 what happened to the other guys? 00:09:42.91\00:09:44.51 I have taken few days off in... 00:09:44.55\00:09:46.58 Never mind. 00:09:46.61\00:09:48.02 You're all blessed to be able to be working under me 00:09:48.05\00:09:52.65 as me as the leader and you as the followers, 00:09:52.69\00:09:55.86 so what I suggest 00:09:55.89\00:09:57.23 that you to do is you start following 00:09:57.26\00:10:00.10 and I am gonna go to my office 00:10:00.13\00:10:02.16 and I am going to get some rest. 00:10:02.20\00:10:06.17 Chop-chop. 00:10:06.20\00:10:07.67 Well, there is only one problem with that. 00:10:16.95\00:10:19.45 If we push the schedule server maintenance up 00:10:19.48\00:10:21.35 by two days, that interferes 00:10:21.38\00:10:23.12 with our normal reporting cycle. 00:10:23.15\00:10:24.85 And at the moment, 00:10:24.89\00:10:26.22 we really can't afford to risk that. 00:10:26.25\00:10:28.89 Mm-hm. 00:10:28.92\00:10:31.63 Okay, so let's do this, 00:10:31.66\00:10:34.30 we can bump up reports one and two up by a day 00:10:34.33\00:10:36.93 and then if you guys can hold off 00:10:36.97\00:10:38.30 on the last server maintenance until 8pm, 00:10:38.33\00:10:41.67 then we can get our other reports done before then. 00:10:41.70\00:10:45.91 Sounds great, all right. 00:10:45.94\00:10:48.14 Bye-bye. 00:10:48.18\00:10:50.35 That is not the best way to do this. 00:10:50.38\00:10:52.51 That's not the best plan. Can you announce yourself? 00:10:52.55\00:10:55.02 I don't need to announce myself. 00:10:55.05\00:10:56.65 You should sense my presence when I come into this room. 00:10:56.69\00:10:59.95 I need a cologne. 00:10:59.99\00:11:01.42 Listen, I could not help, 00:11:01.46\00:11:02.96 but overhear what you were saying, 00:11:02.99\00:11:06.70 and I want you to know that that is not 00:11:06.73\00:11:09.03 the most efficient way to do it. 00:11:09.06\00:11:11.63 What do you suggest? 00:11:11.67\00:11:13.00 I suggest that you do it all, every bit of it in one day. 00:11:13.03\00:11:17.91 That's not even possible and feasible. 00:11:17.94\00:11:19.41 Why is not possible? 00:11:19.44\00:11:21.08 Because we have other tasks that are equally as important 00:11:21.11\00:11:23.98 and those reports take at least two days 00:11:24.01\00:11:25.98 to produce and analyze. 00:11:26.01\00:11:27.48 That's the way that I want you to do it. 00:11:27.52\00:11:29.35 It doesn't matter what programs we got, 00:11:29.38\00:11:31.95 what files we got, and everything, 00:11:31.99\00:11:34.16 I am the MOE. 00:11:34.19\00:11:38.26 MOE? 00:11:38.29\00:11:39.79 Master of efficiency. 00:11:39.83\00:11:43.26 I think I'll stick 00:11:43.30\00:11:44.63 to the original agreement, I'm... 00:11:44.67\00:11:46.00 No, I don't think you will. 00:11:46.03\00:11:47.37 I think you would do it the way that I tell you to do it. 00:11:47.40\00:11:50.04 Ah, I'm gonna stick with that. 00:11:50.07\00:11:52.31 No, you won't. 00:11:52.34\00:11:57.28 Yes, I will. Do you have an adding machine? 00:13:51.03\00:13:55.56 You must not use it if you don't know where it is. 00:13:55.60\00:13:59.73 Surely, there is... 00:13:59.77\00:14:01.20 Aha! 00:14:01.24\00:14:02.57 Now here's what's gonna happen. 00:14:06.64\00:14:11.15 You're going to take the calculator 00:14:11.18\00:14:15.98 and you are gonna call out the numbers 00:14:16.02\00:14:19.32 and you are gonna put them in the adding machine, 00:14:19.35\00:14:21.86 and this is going to save cutting eyes back and forth, 00:14:21.89\00:14:25.43 taking up too much time. 00:14:25.46\00:14:26.93 Two people can do this. 00:14:26.96\00:14:29.00 Are you serious? My work's done here. 00:15:04.47\00:15:06.20 Chop-chop. 00:15:06.23\00:15:07.57 Do it the way I told you to do it. 00:15:07.60\00:15:09.10 Didn't ask you, I told you. 00:15:09.14\00:15:11.77 No questions. 00:15:11.81\00:15:13.14 Five thousand three hundred. 00:15:20.55\00:15:22.52 Five thousand... 00:15:22.55\00:15:25.72 This key keeps getting stuck. 00:15:25.75\00:15:28.32 Okay, five thousand... 00:15:31.56\00:15:33.70 This is so dumb. 00:15:33.73\00:15:37.03 What are you guys doing? Who uses calculators anymore? 00:15:37.07\00:15:39.90 Wouldn't it be easier to just enter 00:15:39.93\00:15:41.27 into a spreadsheet? 00:15:41.30\00:15:42.64 Yeah, that would make 00:15:42.67\00:15:44.01 all the sense in the world, right? 00:15:44.04\00:15:45.47 Tell that to the master of efficiency. 00:15:45.51\00:15:47.64 Oh, he hit you with that one, too, huh? 00:15:47.68\00:15:50.81 It's only been a week and he's already starting 00:15:50.85\00:15:52.61 to get on my nerves. 00:15:52.65\00:15:53.98 We got to do something, 00:15:54.02\00:15:55.72 maybe we can just go to his boss. 00:15:55.75\00:15:57.32 No, no, no, no, man, 00:15:57.35\00:15:59.32 that's not a how a corporate game works. 00:15:59.35\00:16:01.02 We do that, we might all end up in the unemployment line. 00:16:01.06\00:16:03.59 But we got to do something. 00:16:03.63\00:16:05.93 I say we get a bag of pepper powder 00:16:05.96\00:16:08.23 and put it in his drawer, 00:16:08.26\00:16:10.03 then it will explode all over him, 00:16:10.07\00:16:11.70 and then cause him to sneeze 00:16:11.73\00:16:13.30 and then we don't have to hear his mouth anymore. 00:16:13.34\00:16:16.77 Any other ideas? 00:16:16.81\00:16:19.04 Well, why don't we go to his house 00:16:19.07\00:16:20.78 and put sugar in his gas tank? 00:16:20.81\00:16:23.21 From that point on, he can't come to work anymore. 00:16:23.24\00:16:25.68 Haven't you ever heard of Uber? Oh, yeah. 00:16:25.71\00:16:31.29 I got an idea. Come with me. 00:16:31.32\00:16:33.56 Now our view of our boss can give them too much power 00:16:44.67\00:16:48.14 over our lives if we fail to recognize 00:16:48.17\00:16:50.91 who it is that gave us the job in the first place. 00:16:50.94\00:16:53.91 Who do you give credit for your job? 00:16:53.94\00:16:56.44 Is it you or is it the divine hand 00:16:56.48\00:16:59.08 that allowed you to get that job? 00:16:59.11\00:17:01.65 I'm gonna ask for a couple of my friends 00:17:01.68\00:17:03.39 to help me out and illustrate this point. 00:17:03.42\00:17:08.39 We're going to say that my friend Brian here, 00:17:08.42\00:17:10.59 we're going to call him the source. 00:17:10.63\00:17:12.69 This is the divine hand that makes everything work. 00:17:12.73\00:17:16.20 We're going to have my friend Jason 00:17:16.23\00:17:18.33 be the resource. 00:17:18.37\00:17:19.83 That's my supervisor. 00:17:19.87\00:17:21.74 Now I need to recognize who is really in control here. 00:17:21.77\00:17:25.97 However, here is where things get to be a bit muddy. 00:17:26.01\00:17:29.71 You see, I get paid maybe once a week 00:17:29.74\00:17:32.51 or once a month or twice a month or whatever, 00:17:32.55\00:17:35.55 I get paid from my boss. 00:17:35.58\00:17:37.12 That's a really cool thing. 00:17:41.66\00:17:42.99 I now go pay bills, buy gas, 00:17:43.02\00:17:45.79 keep the lights on, and all that good stuff. 00:17:45.83\00:17:48.63 Now this happens every week or every month. 00:17:48.66\00:17:54.47 I get paid again. 00:17:54.50\00:17:56.27 Now the interesting thing here is I cannot see the source 00:17:56.30\00:18:01.64 unless I'm spiritually connected 00:18:01.68\00:18:03.41 but I can definitely see the resource. 00:18:03.45\00:18:05.81 So I'm ready for my pay again, and at this point, 00:18:05.85\00:18:09.98 I give credit to my resource for everything good 00:18:10.02\00:18:14.89 that's happening. 00:18:14.92\00:18:16.26 In fact, I work harder 00:18:16.29\00:18:17.79 and my resource decides I'm due for a raise. 00:18:17.83\00:18:23.83 Whoa! I am getting more money. 00:18:23.87\00:18:26.90 But I see my resource. 00:18:26.94\00:18:30.67 And if I have not talked to my source, 00:18:30.71\00:18:34.11 then I have a problem. 00:18:34.14\00:18:35.98 Now here's sometimes what God allows to happen. 00:18:36.01\00:18:39.55 Sometimes, the divine hand, 00:18:39.58\00:18:43.42 God's divine hand is in control of my blessing. 00:18:43.45\00:18:47.19 And sometimes He lets my resource 00:18:47.22\00:18:49.32 get moved out of the way. 00:18:49.36\00:18:51.56 And I am so used to dealing with my resource, 00:18:51.59\00:18:54.46 well, is my life over? 00:18:54.50\00:18:56.77 Maybe you lose a job, 00:18:56.80\00:18:58.80 maybe you get transferred, 00:18:58.83\00:19:00.64 maybe whatever is going on in your life goes bad 00:19:00.67\00:19:03.87 and there's a change here. 00:19:03.91\00:19:06.07 Now I'll tell you personally what happens, at that point, 00:19:06.11\00:19:08.58 I generally get on my knees 00:19:08.61\00:19:10.41 and I get really, really connected 00:19:10.45\00:19:13.65 to my source. 00:19:13.68\00:19:15.22 And here is what God does, 00:19:15.25\00:19:16.79 once we know where the power comes from, 00:19:16.82\00:19:20.72 He says, "Okay, I think I can bless you again." 00:19:20.76\00:19:23.43 He'll let another resource come back 00:19:23.46\00:19:25.93 into your life and the blessings flow. 00:19:25.96\00:19:30.57 And that's how we're blessed. 00:19:30.60\00:19:32.17 That's really where the power comes from. 00:19:32.20\00:19:34.80 Now here is an issue. 00:19:34.84\00:19:36.44 As my source uses my resource to bless me, 00:19:36.47\00:19:42.41 God wants to make sure that my relationship 00:19:42.44\00:19:45.01 with my resource is kosher, something that he can bless. 00:19:45.05\00:19:50.05 I cannot worship my resource. I can only worship my source. 00:19:50.09\00:19:55.86 So this flow, 00:19:55.89\00:19:57.56 this is how our careers go when they're blessed, 00:19:57.59\00:20:00.90 this is how our lives go when they're blessed, 00:20:00.93\00:20:03.20 when we understand the power of God 00:20:03.23\00:20:05.60 to use channels to bless us, 00:20:05.63\00:20:09.10 and it all begins with understanding 00:20:09.14\00:20:12.17 who our source is, and that's God. 00:20:12.21\00:20:14.21 Thank you guys very much. 00:20:14.24\00:20:15.91 Can I have my money back, please? 00:20:15.94\00:20:18.08 Thank you. 00:20:18.11\00:20:19.95 I love the things that the source does for us. 00:20:19.98\00:20:22.92 Now sometimes our problems with our boss 00:20:22.95\00:20:24.95 is based on a age old ailment, 00:20:24.99\00:20:28.56 a disease, if you will, an itis, 00:20:28.59\00:20:31.23 it's called the I disease or I-itis. 00:20:31.26\00:20:34.93 And the issue is that may be our egos are at war. 00:20:34.96\00:20:40.00 Am I letting their I be bigger than my I? 00:20:40.04\00:20:43.61 Let me give you a secret. 00:20:43.64\00:20:44.97 Any time there is a conflict between the boss 00:20:45.01\00:20:48.41 and the direct report, 00:20:48.44\00:20:50.15 and the issue is one of I and ego, 00:20:50.18\00:20:53.95 almost every time the direct report loses. 00:20:53.98\00:20:57.52 Sometimes I'm just gonna have to let my boss be the boss, 00:20:57.55\00:21:01.29 it's the way it is. 00:21:01.32\00:21:02.86 And by the way, I have a divine comforter 00:21:02.89\00:21:04.89 that can keep me at peace while I'm doing that. 00:21:04.93\00:21:07.83 So how do you handle a challenging boss? 00:21:07.86\00:21:10.70 Well, first of all, find out who they really are. 00:21:10.73\00:21:14.50 We all come to work, we fight traffic, 00:21:14.54\00:21:16.40 we go through whatever, 00:21:16.44\00:21:17.77 you need to know who your boss is. 00:21:17.81\00:21:19.77 So the better that you understand 00:21:19.81\00:21:21.98 how your boss thinks and what your boss does 00:21:22.01\00:21:24.65 and why, the better situated 00:21:24.68\00:21:27.05 you're going to be to deliver the results that they want. 00:21:27.08\00:21:29.52 You're going to be better able to manage their expectations 00:21:29.55\00:21:32.72 and avoid those no-win positions. 00:21:32.75\00:21:35.52 Now this might be difficult especially 00:21:35.56\00:21:38.46 if your boss gets on your last nerve. 00:21:38.49\00:21:41.96 But if you're able to put yourself 00:21:42.00\00:21:43.37 in their shoes and see the world 00:21:43.40\00:21:45.37 and your work place as they do, 00:21:45.40\00:21:47.70 the leverage that you will have in dealing 00:21:47.74\00:21:49.80 with them will be immeasurable. 00:21:49.84\00:21:53.04 Here's what you need to know, what do they care about? 00:21:53.07\00:21:56.14 I mean, really, at the gut level, 00:21:56.18\00:21:58.08 what keeps them up at night? 00:21:58.11\00:22:00.62 What frightens them? 00:22:00.65\00:22:01.98 No matter how they try to convince you, 00:22:02.02\00:22:03.35 they are superhuman, things do bother them. 00:22:03.39\00:22:06.45 How much importance do they place 00:22:06.49\00:22:09.49 on impressing others? 00:22:09.52\00:22:11.09 Every boss has a boss and they have a boss, 00:22:11.13\00:22:14.60 are they trying to work 00:22:14.63\00:22:15.96 the corporate ladder themselves? 00:22:16.00\00:22:17.73 How do they measure success? 00:22:17.77\00:22:20.67 And what do they think about failure? 00:22:20.70\00:22:23.71 When you know what drives your boss, 00:22:23.74\00:22:25.84 even if your boss 00:22:25.87\00:22:27.21 may not be fully conscious of what it is, 00:22:27.24\00:22:29.88 you can speak to their listening, 00:22:29.91\00:22:31.78 you can speak to their insides when you're talking to them, 00:22:31.81\00:22:34.65 you can frame opinions and use language in ways 00:22:34.68\00:22:37.82 that line up with their values, 00:22:37.85\00:22:40.59 mellows out their fears, and helps them know 00:22:40.62\00:22:43.86 that you understand their priorities. 00:22:43.89\00:22:46.16 In other words, you'll be able to know 00:22:46.19\00:22:48.80 what's really going on in their heads. 00:22:48.83\00:22:51.63 You also want to support their successes 00:22:51.67\00:22:54.64 and you want to work around their weaknesses. 00:22:54.67\00:22:57.57 Yes, everybody has got weaknesses, 00:22:57.61\00:22:59.64 and this boss that may bug you has weaknesses. 00:22:59.67\00:23:02.44 Now it might sound a bit counterintuitive 00:23:02.48\00:23:05.25 to support a bad boss in becoming more successful. 00:23:05.28\00:23:09.38 But there's absolutely nothing to be gained by making them 00:23:09.42\00:23:12.55 look bad or going to war 00:23:12.59\00:23:14.92 or attempting to facilitate their failure. 00:23:14.96\00:23:18.99 If they are as bad as you think and you say, 00:23:19.03\00:23:22.03 they will likely do a pretty good job 00:23:22.06\00:23:23.97 of messing things up all by themselves. 00:23:24.00\00:23:27.67 Now exposing your boss's incompetence 00:23:27.70\00:23:30.77 will only compound your misery, 00:23:30.81\00:23:33.58 and it might damage your reputation, 00:23:33.61\00:23:35.88 it might even damage good job. 00:23:35.91\00:23:39.08 One way to help your boss focus on their natural strengths 00:23:39.11\00:23:43.32 is to be proactive about how you help them 00:23:43.35\00:23:46.82 deal with their weaknesses. 00:23:46.86\00:23:48.56 If you know for instance that you have a boss 00:23:48.59\00:23:50.96 who is disorganized, 00:23:50.99\00:23:52.33 I mean, he can't find papers on their desk, 00:23:52.36\00:23:54.20 doesn't know where the next project is, 00:23:54.23\00:23:56.60 then help them be on top of things 00:23:56.63\00:23:58.33 rather than whining 00:23:58.37\00:23:59.70 about their lack of organizational skills. 00:23:59.73\00:24:02.64 I mean, if they've got a problem, be a helper. 00:24:02.67\00:24:06.07 If you know your boss is often late to meetings, 00:24:06.11\00:24:09.44 offer to kickoff the next meeting for them. 00:24:09.48\00:24:12.51 If he tends to change his mind frequently 00:24:12.55\00:24:14.58 or is outright forgetful, 00:24:14.62\00:24:15.95 be sure to document all communication 00:24:15.98\00:24:17.92 so you can refer it back to them 00:24:17.95\00:24:19.59 if he ever contradicts himself. 00:24:19.62\00:24:21.62 If you know your boss is slow to respond 00:24:21.66\00:24:23.53 to continue working on a project 00:24:23.56\00:24:25.46 while you wait to hear back from him, 00:24:25.49\00:24:27.26 be proactive and contact him. 00:24:27.30\00:24:29.43 Making yourself indispensable and someone your boss 00:24:29.46\00:24:32.70 can really rely on to do their job 00:24:32.73\00:24:34.60 is a valuable asset when you start to look 00:24:34.64\00:24:37.67 at what's the next thing on your plate 00:24:37.71\00:24:39.74 for your career. 00:24:39.77\00:24:41.31 By doing what you can to help your boss succeed, 00:24:41.34\00:24:43.55 you lay a solid foundation 00:24:43.58\00:24:45.21 for greater successes for yourself. 00:24:45.25\00:24:47.45 Now it may not be an immediate reward. 00:24:47.48\00:24:49.32 But in the long run, 00:24:49.35\00:24:50.69 you can never lose by helping others. 00:24:50.72\00:24:52.52 Do better than they would otherwise. 00:24:52.55\00:24:55.76 Take the high road. 00:24:55.79\00:24:57.13 Your personal brand is riding on it. 00:24:57.16\00:24:59.59 Never let your boss's bad behavior 00:24:59.63\00:25:01.70 be an excuse for your own. 00:25:01.73\00:25:04.17 All too often, people start to feel entitled to slack off 00:25:04.20\00:25:07.37 or take longer lunches 00:25:07.40\00:25:09.60 or lose interest in performing well 00:25:09.64\00:25:11.81 because they have a bad boss. 00:25:11.84\00:25:13.38 Don't do it. 00:25:13.41\00:25:14.74 Keep your mind focused on top performance. 00:25:14.78\00:25:18.15 Complaining to your spouse or your friends, 00:25:18.18\00:25:20.95 do that all you want, 00:25:20.98\00:25:22.32 but when you're in the office or the workplace, 00:25:22.35\00:25:24.59 stay upbeat, stay engaged, 00:25:24.62\00:25:27.52 and actually handling a difficult boss 00:25:27.56\00:25:29.86 can really set you apart if you do it well. 00:25:29.89\00:25:32.43 You never know who is watching or listening. 00:25:32.46\00:25:34.26 But be assured people can open up 00:25:34.30\00:25:37.07 or close future opportunities 00:25:37.10\00:25:39.27 based on what you're doing. 00:25:39.30\00:25:41.10 They are watching. 00:25:41.14\00:25:42.47 While it may be easy to succumb to resentment or resignation 00:25:42.50\00:25:45.47 and mentally checked out of doing your job, 00:25:45.51\00:25:47.28 don't do that. 00:25:47.31\00:25:48.64 That undermines your integrity, 00:25:48.68\00:25:50.38 but it can also put you at risk of being branded as a whiner, 00:25:50.41\00:25:53.72 a slacker, or both. 00:25:53.75\00:25:55.72 So if your boss is a shouter, don't react by shouting back. 00:25:55.75\00:25:59.42 If they're petty or small minded, 00:25:59.45\00:26:01.56 don't descend to smallness yourself 00:26:01.59\00:26:03.73 however tempting it may be, rather with God's help, 00:26:03.76\00:26:07.23 maintain a calm professional demeanor 00:26:07.26\00:26:09.80 in dealing with your boss. 00:26:09.83\00:26:11.23 Gandhi wrote, 00:26:11.27\00:26:12.60 "Be the change you want to see in the world." 00:26:12.63\00:26:14.60 In this case, act like the leader 00:26:14.64\00:26:17.04 you wish your boss was. 00:26:17.07\00:26:19.14 If you feel you've run out of options, 00:26:19.17\00:26:20.84 don't go rumor-mongering 00:26:20.88\00:26:22.21 or bad mouthing them to everybody, 00:26:22.24\00:26:24.11 rather follow proper procedures 00:26:24.15\00:26:25.71 for registering complaints with HR 00:26:25.75\00:26:27.92 or with higher level superiors, 00:26:27.95\00:26:29.78 documenting each step of the way. 00:26:29.82\00:26:32.75 Speak up. 00:26:32.79\00:26:34.12 Give your boss a chance to respond, 00:26:34.16\00:26:35.89 have the courage to speak up 00:26:35.92\00:26:37.36 rather than cower in silence with fear. 00:26:37.39\00:26:39.09 So just because it may be easier to say nothing 00:26:39.13\00:26:42.43 don't suffer quietly or complain. 00:26:42.46\00:26:45.00 Pray for them and trust God 00:26:45.03\00:26:46.63 to take care of you in all work situations. 00:26:46.67\00:26:48.90 Proverbs 3:5 says, 00:26:48.94\00:26:51.01 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, 00:26:51.04\00:26:52.91 and do not lean on your own understanding." 00:26:52.94\00:26:55.51 Show Christ living in you by interacting pleasantly, 00:26:55.54\00:27:00.28 yeah, even with a rough boss. 00:27:00.32\00:27:02.18 Don't forget your daily spiritual routine, every day, 00:27:02.22\00:27:05.15 wake up, spend time in God's Word, pray, 00:27:05.19\00:27:07.59 listen for His voice. 00:27:07.62\00:27:09.42 My scripture for this is Deuteronomy 1:30, 00:27:09.46\00:27:12.19 "The Lord your God, who is going before you, 00:27:12.23\00:27:14.50 will fight for you, even as He did in Egypt, 00:27:14.53\00:27:17.37 before your very eyes." 00:27:17.40\00:27:19.27 Remember, no matter what, 00:27:19.30\00:27:21.50 you may be powerless over what they, 00:27:21.54\00:27:24.14 even a bad boss, can do to you. 00:27:24.17\00:27:27.21 But they are absolutely powerless 00:27:27.24\00:27:29.74 over what God will do for you. 00:27:29.78\00:27:32.71 So until next time, this is Eric Kelly. 00:27:32.75\00:27:36.75 Keep Workin' the Dream. 00:27:36.79\00:27:38.12
