Do you see mistakes on that? 00:01:05.59\00:01:07.53 I do, I see emails only with no phone number 00:01:07.56\00:01:10.83 and I would really like to pick up the phone and call the 00:01:10.87\00:01:15.20 applicant and have a discussion, so that would 00:01:15.24\00:01:19.87 also delay the process of an applicant 00:01:19.91\00:01:23.48 possibly getting hired. 00:01:23.51\00:01:24.91 I think that one of the things that we see are 00:01:24.95\00:01:27.45 the formatting problems in resumes and you want to make 00:01:27.48\00:01:30.79 sure that you have a really well-formatted, clean resume 00:01:30.82\00:01:34.16 for employers to look at because they're only going to 00:01:34.19\00:01:35.86 look at it for a few minutes, maybe even 30 seconds 00:01:35.89\00:01:38.83 they'll give each resume. 00:01:38.86\00:01:40.20 I think that that's probably the biggest issue we see. 00:01:40.23\00:01:42.70 One of my biggest pet peeves on a resume is 00:01:42.73\00:01:44.63 when they put it in comic sans. 00:01:44.67\00:01:46.13 So, it's something you see a lot, so avoid putting your 00:01:46.17\00:01:50.01 text into comic sans and that could help you out a lot. 00:01:50.04\00:01:54.64 Now think about it... Millions of resumes 00:01:54.68\00:01:57.91 going from one company to the next, from one resume 00:01:57.95\00:02:03.08 aggregator to the next... to the company 00:02:03.12\00:02:05.25 that you want to be hired in. 00:02:05.29\00:02:06.62 There is so much energy around resumes, 00:02:06.65\00:02:10.63 we want to make sure that you get it right. 00:02:10.66\00:02:13.26 Now let's check on our friend, Ron... 00:02:13.29\00:02:16.10 Ron is building his resume and he is educated, 00:02:16.13\00:02:20.34 he is gifted, he is enthusiastic... 00:02:20.37\00:02:22.64 He's looking forward to building a strong career, 00:02:22.67\00:02:26.31 but he is struggling on how he can get his prospective 00:02:26.34\00:02:30.45 employers to see how good he is actually going to be. 00:02:30.48\00:02:33.52 Why he is going to be an incredible asset 00:02:33.55\00:02:36.02 to their organization. 00:02:36.05\00:02:37.69 So, let's watch and see how he handles it. 00:02:37.72\00:02:42.39 Looking for someone who understands how to use the 00:02:44.73\00:02:47.16 Microsoft Office Suite - check. 00:02:47.20\00:02:49.90 I can do that. 00:02:49.93\00:02:51.33 They want someone who understands 00:02:51.37\00:02:53.34 business analytics - check. 00:02:53.37\00:02:56.10 I definitely got that. 00:02:56.14\00:02:58.14 They want someone that has a basic business 00:02:58.17\00:03:01.11 accounting skills, I'm great with numbers - check. 00:03:01.14\00:03:06.92 I definitely got that covered! 00:03:06.95\00:03:10.42 They're looking for someone who could do forecasting. 00:03:10.45\00:03:13.92 I've had two courses in business forecasting - check. 00:03:13.96\00:03:17.86 Wow, this is a pretty good job fit. 00:03:17.89\00:03:21.80 Most of the stuff they're looking for 00:03:21.83\00:03:23.20 I can do pretty well. 00:03:23.23\00:03:24.90 Now let me make sure that my resume shows them the 00:03:24.93\00:03:28.14 same thing. 00:03:28.17\00:03:29.60 I'm about to get paid. 00:03:29.64\00:03:32.01 I am about to get paid and pay some of these bills 00:03:32.04\00:03:36.51 that have been piling up. 00:03:36.54\00:03:37.88 Let me call The Prophet and make sure I'm on the right path. 00:03:37.91\00:03:43.22 Dialing and the phone is ringing... 00:03:43.25\00:03:52.39 Okay, now some of you out there may be contemplating 00:03:52.43\00:03:56.83 the best way to write a resume. 00:03:56.87\00:03:59.27 Now, you want to be sure that your prospective employer 00:03:59.30\00:04:03.74 knows about all the good things that you know and can do. 00:04:03.77\00:04:08.34 All the good things you've done! 00:04:08.38\00:04:10.08 Now while this is partially true, the true secret 00:04:10.11\00:04:14.22 to resume success is to match your resume to the specific 00:04:14.25\00:04:18.79 things that the employer is looking for. 00:04:18.82\00:04:22.16 Now today, we're going to show you how to write a resume 00:04:22.19\00:04:25.13 that gets the attention of the recruiter or the 00:04:25.16\00:04:27.76 prospective hiring manager in the companies 00:04:27.80\00:04:30.27 that you want to work for. 00:04:30.30\00:04:31.93 We're going to make sure that you can do it right. 00:04:31.97\00:04:36.17 Now, let me give you some insight into recruiting 00:04:36.20\00:04:38.87 and hiring managers. 00:04:38.91\00:04:40.94 They have an incredible task, it's daunting. 00:04:40.98\00:04:44.05 They've got to review hundreds, if not thousands of resumes 00:04:44.08\00:04:48.18 sometimes for one particular job. 00:04:48.22\00:04:51.15 Now here's the process, follow this... 00:04:51.19\00:04:55.19 resume, phone screen, interview. 00:04:55.22\00:04:58.73 Once again... Resume, to the phone screen, 00:04:58.76\00:05:03.77 to the interview. 00:05:03.80\00:05:06.03 So, these companies have thousands and thousands 00:05:06.07\00:05:09.14 of resumes coming in. 00:05:09.17\00:05:10.67 There's no way they can spend time interviewing 00:05:10.71\00:05:13.11 all those people. 00:05:13.14\00:05:14.54 So they look through the resumes to see if they're up to snuff 00:05:14.58\00:05:18.11 and then they have a phone screen, 00:05:18.15\00:05:20.75 then they talk to those hundreds of people on the phone screens, 00:05:20.78\00:05:23.99 and they narrow those down to actual job interviews, 00:05:24.02\00:05:29.82 fact-to-face interviews. 00:05:29.86\00:05:31.46 Now your job is to get a phone screen call and impress the 00:05:31.49\00:05:36.26 recruiter to give you a chance at an actual 00:05:36.30\00:05:40.04 face-to-face interview. 00:05:40.07\00:05:41.70 So here's how it's done... 00:05:41.77\00:05:43.37 Re-read the job posting, make sure there's an example 00:05:43.41\00:05:48.24 of each job requirement on your resume. 00:05:48.28\00:05:52.71 For instance... let's say on the job posting, they say, 00:05:52.75\00:05:56.65 "Must have 5 years accounting experience," 00:05:56.69\00:05:59.82 you need to be able to say, on your resume, 00:06:00.22\00:06:02.96 "I've had 5 years accounting experience." 00:06:02.99\00:06:07.16 If their job posting says, "Must be certified in Microsoft 00:06:07.20\00:06:11.80 Office," you need to be able to show, on your resume, 00:06:11.83\00:06:16.07 that you are certified in Microsoft Office. 00:06:16.10\00:06:20.31 Now Ron is going to work through building is resume. 00:06:20.34\00:06:23.41 He is also going to touch base with a mentor, a smart guy, 00:06:23.45\00:06:28.22 to give him a few tips. 00:06:28.25\00:06:30.39 Let's see what happens. 00:06:30.42\00:06:32.05 Phone is ringing... 00:06:33.89\00:06:36.26 Hello... The Prophet, is this you? 00:06:36.29\00:06:41.40 Brilliant deductive reasoning... 00:06:41.43\00:06:43.33 Sir, you called me, what can I help you with? 00:06:43.37\00:06:45.50 Well, I found this job that I think I would enjoy doing, 00:06:45.53\00:06:51.57 but I need help creating a resume for it. 00:06:51.61\00:06:54.44 How do I do that? 00:06:54.48\00:06:56.11 Ah sure, sure - first of all, you need to look at the 00:06:56.14\00:06:59.58 job description and look at what they say are the job 00:06:59.61\00:07:03.45 requirements and duties. 00:07:03.49\00:07:04.85 Ahhh, are these things you really want to do 00:07:04.89\00:07:07.72 and would enjoy doing every day? I think so. 00:07:07.76\00:07:11.46 Okay, well if we've got that, now you need to show that 00:07:11.49\00:07:14.50 you are everything they are looking for. 00:07:14.53\00:07:17.30 I want you to look at the job requirements again... 00:07:17.33\00:07:20.30 Can you give an example of you doing each one of these 00:07:20.34\00:07:24.84 in your resume? 00:07:24.87\00:07:26.61 I think I can. Okay. 00:07:26.64\00:07:29.94 Now it's time to write it. 00:07:29.98\00:07:31.31 When you write it, next to each accomplishment 00:07:31.35\00:07:34.45 write a business impact statement or 00:07:34.48\00:07:37.82 a "so-what statement." 00:07:37.85\00:07:39.22 It kind of goes like this... 00:07:39.25\00:07:40.59 Instead of saying, "Designed a software program 00:07:40.62\00:07:44.03 for accounting." That has no weight to it. 00:07:44.06\00:07:46.96 Say, "Designed a software program for accounting 00:07:47.00\00:07:50.67 that saved the company $400,000 annually." 00:07:50.70\00:07:55.74 So make sure that you write one of those types of 00:07:55.77\00:07:58.54 statements next to every one of your accomplishments 00:07:58.57\00:08:01.81 on your resume. 00:08:01.84\00:08:03.28 Got it Mr. Prophet, what else can I do? 00:08:03.31\00:08:05.61 You have spell check? Yes 00:08:05.65\00:08:07.35 Use it... there's nothing that will get your resume 00:08:07.38\00:08:12.75 moved to the "no pile" faster than bad spelling 00:08:12.79\00:08:16.83 and bad grammar. 00:08:16.86\00:08:18.63 Sadly resumes have been giving HR departments 00:08:18.66\00:08:23.16 and recruiters joy and entertainment 00:08:23.20\00:08:26.63 for a long time now. 00:08:26.67\00:08:28.70 Let's see... do you have anybody that can 00:08:28.74\00:08:31.91 proofread your resume? 00:08:31.94\00:08:33.31 I think so, yes. 00:08:33.34\00:08:36.34 Well if you do, make sure you choose someone who is a 00:08:36.38\00:08:38.48 professional, someone that might be able to even 00:08:38.51\00:08:41.32 act as coach or mentor later on. 00:08:41.35\00:08:43.62 Bribe them, give them lunch, event tickets, whatever. 00:08:43.65\00:08:46.92 But you want to make sure that a professional 00:08:46.96\00:08:49.46 in that area would think that your resume 00:08:49.49\00:08:52.56 projects a candidate that's worth interviewing, got that? 00:08:52.59\00:08:56.26 Got it Mr. Prophet, any other advice? 00:08:56.30\00:08:59.63 All right, I don't think so right now, my friend, 00:08:59.67\00:09:02.24 I believe that you can be well on your way after this. 00:09:02.27\00:09:05.57 Call me back when you get called in for the interview. 00:09:05.61\00:09:08.01 I have a feeling that you're going to be very successful. 00:09:08.04\00:09:11.78 This is "Prophet Motivational Hotline," thank you for calling. 00:09:11.81\00:09:16.45 Okay, are you ready for a couple of secrets? 00:09:19.85\00:09:22.52 I'm going to share with you how recruiters 00:09:22.56\00:09:25.93 sort resumes - here it goes... 00:09:25.96\00:09:28.43 They make three piles; the first pile is "Yes," 00:09:28.46\00:09:33.20 they read it, they like it, they want a little bit more 00:09:33.60\00:09:37.51 about this person that's applying. 00:09:37.54\00:09:39.87 The second pile is "Maybe." 00:09:39.91\00:09:42.01 Hmm, not quite sure, there are a couple of good 00:09:42.04\00:09:44.75 things - hmm, a couple of things not too sure about. 00:09:44.78\00:09:48.75 The third pile is "No." 00:09:48.78\00:09:50.12 Whatever they saw, uh uh, we don't want to talk to them. 00:09:50.15\00:09:53.66 Now, shorter is better, "War and Peace" is not 00:09:53.69\00:10:00.40 appreciated by recruiters. 00:10:00.43\00:10:02.66 If it's too long, they're going to put it down 00:10:02.70\00:10:05.47 and go to the next resume. 00:10:05.50\00:10:07.64 I'd submit one page or as close to one page as possible. 00:10:07.67\00:10:13.07 Now remember, they're sorting all the time and all the things 00:10:13.11\00:10:17.45 that they find that don't work, all the things that they think 00:10:17.48\00:10:21.88 tell them about you in the resume that they don't like, 00:10:21.92\00:10:25.15 they call them "knockout points," 00:10:25.19\00:10:27.19 and as they're sorting through,, it becomes a funnel 00:10:27.22\00:10:29.66 and they'll look at one and move on. 00:10:29.69\00:10:31.56 They don't spend time looking at a resume once they see 00:10:31.59\00:10:36.03 something that they hmm don't like. 00:10:36.06\00:10:38.93 Here's a couple of situations that recruiters 00:10:38.97\00:10:42.37 kind of.. they grimace at... 00:10:42.40\00:10:45.21 Email address: Partyman@gmail.com 00:10:45.24\00:10:51.61 I mean, what does that tell you about the person? 00:10:51.65\00:10:54.08 It doesn't mean they wouldn't be a good worker, 00:10:54.12\00:10:56.48 but if they didn't even take the time to change their 00:10:56.52\00:10:59.55 email address to something a bit more business-like, 00:10:59.59\00:11:03.89 I don't know - do I really want to hire Party Man 00:11:03.93\00:11:08.16 to come work in my accounting department, 00:11:08.20\00:11:10.63 How about this one... "grammar" 00:12:28.41\00:12:32.48 I was working for one client, I came down the hall... 00:12:32.51\00:12:35.25 I think I was in a meeting and I heard in the boardroom 00:12:35.28\00:12:39.75 on that floor - I heard peals of laughter - they were howling, 00:12:39.79\00:12:44.63 and a good time at work is great 00:12:44.66\00:12:46.93 in any company that you work for... 00:12:46.96\00:12:49.13 So one of the folks that I did work for - she came out 00:12:49.16\00:12:53.23 and I said, "What are you guys doing in there? 00:12:53.27\00:12:55.87 You're having WAY too much fun at work!" 00:12:55.90\00:12:58.77 She said, "We were reviewing some resumes." 00:12:58.81\00:13:01.81 Well I knew they weren't the recruiting department... 00:13:01.84\00:13:04.85 I said, "Why are you reviewing the resumes?" 00:13:04.88\00:13:07.55 Well a couple of the recruiters had brought some resumes 00:13:07.58\00:13:11.62 to the meeting and were reading them. 00:13:11.65\00:13:13.79 Sadly, the resume that really sent them over edge 00:13:13.82\00:13:19.73 began with: "I looking for a company..." 00:13:19.76\00:13:24.50 Now I don't know if you know this, but people that 00:13:24.53\00:13:27.07 write resumes poorly have been providing humor for 00:13:27.10\00:13:31.81 human resources departments for many, many years. 00:13:31.84\00:13:36.48 "I looking for a company..." 00:13:36.51\00:13:39.41 What pile do you think the recruiter put that on? 00:13:39.45\00:13:43.69 Yeah, it probably wasn't the "Hey, we can't wait to 00:13:43.72\00:13:47.92 interview this person on the phone." 00:13:47.96\00:13:50.29 Another of the knockout points that keep resumes 00:13:50.33\00:13:54.13 from being accepted is job-hopping. 00:13:54.16\00:13:57.87 Now, you look and see this person - they worked here 00:13:57.90\00:14:02.30 8 months, they worked here 6 months, 00:14:02.34\00:14:06.34 they worked over here for a year and you start to look at 00:14:06.37\00:14:10.78 a 5-year employment history and notice that they've had 00:14:10.81\00:14:16.08 four jobs. 00:14:16.12\00:14:18.35 Now, does that mean absolutely that this person is 00:14:18.39\00:14:21.66 not a good worker? No, it does not. 00:14:21.69\00:14:24.39 However, the recruiter is looking at the job-hopping 00:14:24.43\00:14:28.96 and saying, "Hmm, if this person got here, 00:14:29.00\00:14:32.53 how long would they stay?" 00:14:32.57\00:14:34.60 Because remember - if they don't stay long in that job, 00:14:34.64\00:14:37.54 the recruiter has to do the same thing over again 00:14:37.57\00:14:40.58 in a few months. 00:14:40.61\00:14:41.94 So job-hopping does not suit well. 00:14:41.98\00:14:44.61 Now someone asked, "What is too much job-hopping?" 00:14:44.65\00:14:47.42 It varies by industry, but if you've been around 00:14:47.45\00:14:51.95 and you've seen, hmm, 3, 4, 5 years of experience, 00:14:51.99\00:14:55.89 and you're moving up - not too bad. 00:14:55.92\00:14:58.39 However, if I look down and see months or maybe only 00:14:58.43\00:15:01.70 1-1/2 years - that may go to the "maybe pile" despite 00:15:01.73\00:15:06.37 the rest of the qualifications being stellar. 00:15:06.40\00:15:10.21 The next issue that can be a knockout point are gaps 00:15:10.24\00:15:14.21 in employment. 00:15:14.24\00:15:15.64 It doesn't necessarily mean that this person isn't a good 00:15:15.68\00:15:19.71 employee - it simply means that, "Where were you 00:15:19.75\00:15:23.02 during this time?" 00:15:23.05\00:15:24.42 And, yes, many times we make up the worse case scenarios 00:15:24.45\00:15:28.92 in our mind, so be ready to explain that to a recruiter. 00:15:28.96\00:15:33.16 Where were you for the last 1-1/2 years? 00:15:33.19\00:15:36.16 Some of them are easily explainable... 00:15:36.20\00:15:37.93 "I went to make sure my kids were okay in elementary 00:15:37.97\00:15:40.67 school before I came back to work or I moved 00:15:40.70\00:15:43.41 to another country or there was military service. 00:15:43.44\00:15:45.67 There are so many reasons to explain that... 00:15:45.71\00:15:47.71 But be prepared to explain because recruiters 00:15:47.74\00:15:51.11 are definitely looking at the gaps in service. 00:15:51.15\00:15:55.32 Another factor that influences recruiters is "layout." 00:15:55.35\00:15:59.19 Now, bad layout versus good layout... 00:15:59.22\00:16:02.49 Bad layout is if I read your resume and I've got to 00:16:02.52\00:16:05.56 read through it to hop over to this to that - to kind of 00:16:05.59\00:16:08.36 figure out what it is you're good at. 00:16:08.40\00:16:10.43 First there's a good layout, now, a good layout 00:16:10.47\00:16:13.54 may be chronological. 00:16:13.57\00:16:15.14 You may say, "In 1995, I did this, in 2000, this happened, 00:16:15.17\00:16:20.98 in 2005, I worked here and you may show me 00:16:21.01\00:16:24.38 kind of on a timeline what you've done. 00:16:24.41\00:16:26.48 A lot of people that have been in the workplace 00:16:26.51\00:16:28.85 for many years use an achievement layout. 00:16:28.88\00:16:31.62 which pretty much says, "I have this skill and it was 00:16:31.65\00:16:34.92 manifested on this job and here's 00:16:34.96\00:16:36.83 where I was when that happened." 00:16:36.86\00:16:38.69 "I have this ability and it was manifested on this job 00:16:38.73\00:16:41.96 and here's what I did," because the list would be 00:16:42.00\00:16:44.37 rather long sometimes if they laid theirs out chronologically; 00:16:44.40\00:16:47.97 however, whatever layout you choose to use, 00:16:48.00\00:16:51.34 please make sure that it has a flow to it and it's easy 00:16:51.37\00:16:55.04 for the reader to follow you. 00:16:55.08\00:16:57.25 Now, the next area is where recruiters sometimes get 00:16:57.28\00:17:02.48 some humor, sadly at the expense of someone 00:17:02.52\00:17:06.62 applying for a job and that is dealing with past issues. 00:17:06.65\00:17:11.13 Sometimes on an application, they'll be an area that says, 00:17:11.16\00:17:14.73 "Why did you leave your last job?" 00:17:14.76\00:17:16.90 An interview will definitely ask you that. 00:17:16.93\00:17:19.53 "Why did you leave your last job?" 00:17:19.57\00:17:21.67 Okay, here's some that I've actually seen... 00:17:21.70\00:17:25.14 "I left my last job because my boss was an idiot, 00:17:25.17\00:17:29.21 just like the two bosses I had before him." 00:17:29.24\00:17:32.71 Now think about that a little bit. 00:17:32.75\00:17:34.95 "I left my last job because my boss was an idiot 00:17:34.98\00:17:39.05 like the two bosses before him." 00:17:39.09\00:17:41.86 Now, the recruiter is reading that and so far, 00:17:41.89\00:17:45.36 you've got a pretty good track record of thinking 00:17:45.39\00:17:47.53 your boss was an idiot. 00:17:47.56\00:17:49.33 I saw one the other day that was absolutely hilarious. 00:17:49.36\00:17:53.03 It said, "I left my last job to make room for the 00:17:53.07\00:17:56.91 vice president's girlfriend." 00:17:56.94\00:17:58.47 Now at that point, that person had gone over the edge 00:17:58.51\00:18:02.58 and no recruiter is going to touch that. 00:18:02.61\00:18:04.91 So when they're asking you why you left your last job, 00:18:04.95\00:18:07.88 it's better to say... "For more money." 00:18:07.92\00:18:10.02 It's better to say, "Because I wanted to grow and develop." 00:18:10.05\00:18:14.22 Any reason that's not negative. 00:18:14.26\00:18:17.03 Any negative phrase or words used to describe 00:18:17.06\00:18:21.96 why you left is going to cause the recruiter some pause. 00:18:22.00\00:18:26.13 Now, here's a tip... What are you bringing 00:21:08.36\00:21:11.23 to my company from your past experience. 00:21:11.27\00:21:15.30 I don't care where the experience came from. 00:21:15.34\00:21:16.84 It could have been paid, unpaid, volunteer, babysitting, 00:21:16.87\00:21:20.81 dog walking - I don't care. 00:21:20.84\00:21:22.18 What is the skill that you're bringing to me 00:21:22.21\00:21:24.18 rather than, "I made copies on a copier, I filled out this 00:21:24.21\00:21:28.78 report" - and doesn't really care. 00:21:28.82\00:21:30.92 Now we must always remember that while these are the 00:21:30.95\00:21:35.56 technical things we need to do for our resumes to be accepted 00:21:35.59\00:21:40.30 and looked at favorably, there's still one recruiter 00:21:40.33\00:21:44.87 that's above all recruiters. 00:21:44.90\00:21:46.67 There was a young lady that came up to me one time 00:21:46.70\00:21:49.50 in church and she said, Mr. Kelly, I'm having some 00:21:49.54\00:21:52.87 problems getting into the field" that she was getting into. 00:21:52.91\00:21:58.08 I read her resume - it was awesome! 00:21:58.11\00:22:01.08 She was bright, she was talented, she was gifted, 00:22:01.12\00:22:05.85 she had a graduate degree. 00:22:05.89\00:22:08.16 There was no reason, based on who she was as a 00:22:08.19\00:22:11.53 person, that she wouldn't be accepted in that industry. 00:22:11.56\00:22:15.16 Somebody, somewhere there should hire her. 00:22:15.20\00:22:18.27 However, as I read her resume, it was just kind of 00:22:18.30\00:22:23.10 hmm bland - I did this, I did that. 00:22:23.14\00:22:27.94 So the tip that I was impressed to share with her 00:22:27.98\00:22:30.78 is something I'll share with you... 00:22:30.81\00:22:32.55 It's called, "the so-what." 00:22:32.58\00:22:36.89 So on the resume she said, "I managed whatever, whatever 00:22:36.92\00:22:42.66 for this period of time," that is so bland to a recruiter. 00:22:42.69\00:22:49.10 The recruiter is thinking, "So what." 00:22:49.13\00:22:52.53 Now what we did was change her statements into 00:22:52.57\00:22:55.87 power statements. 00:22:55.90\00:22:57.24 The "so what" is the impact statement "I managed 00:22:57.27\00:23:00.88 this and this fund for so many dollars and here's the 00:23:00.91\00:23:04.01 "so what" - "that allowed our company to move from 00:23:04.05\00:23:08.05 third to second place in the industry." 00:23:08.08\00:23:10.69 WOW - does that get a recruiter's attention. 00:23:10.72\00:23:14.49 So every entry on her resume, I believe she had coordinated 00:23:14.52\00:23:19.26 something in one department and the impact, 00:23:19.29\00:23:22.36 when she shared it with me, was she had saved over 00:23:22.40\00:23:25.73 $11,000 in a year. 00:23:25.77\00:23:28.34 So we wrote it this way, "Coordinated the activities 00:23:28.37\00:23:31.44 in this department and saved the organization $11,000 annually." 00:23:31.47\00:23:37.48 Now think about a recruiter, think about a hiring manager... 00:23:37.51\00:23:42.18 and at the list of everything that you've done, 00:23:42.22\00:23:45.82 there is a "so what" statement and it's a business impact. 00:23:45.85\00:23:50.03 It almost doesn't matter what you've done, 00:23:50.06\00:23:52.96 the impact statement says, "I made the company money, 00:23:52.99\00:23:56.10 I saved money, I made the organization 00:23:56.13\00:23:59.50 work more efficiently." 00:23:59.53\00:24:00.94 So when we're writing a resume, don't just write 00:24:00.97\00:24:03.84 what you did - write the "so what" statement... 00:24:03.87\00:24:07.61 Because of this, here's what the company was able to achieve. 00:24:07.64\00:24:12.11 It was interesting, at the end of it, we chatted about it, 00:24:12.15\00:24:15.22 we prayed over it - she took the resume and left, 00:24:15.25\00:24:18.05 and I didn't see her for a few more weeks. 00:24:18.09\00:24:20.16 When she came back, she was smiling, 00:24:20.19\00:24:22.66 obviously I could figure from across the room, 00:24:22.69\00:24:24.73 she had gotten the job and she said, "They hired me, 00:24:24.76\00:24:27.53 they put me in a good position, I'm happy, I'm blessed!" 00:24:27.56\00:24:30.50 Well a couple of things had happened... 00:24:30.53\00:24:31.90 First of all, she had prepared herself for advancement. 00:24:31.93\00:24:37.44 She had prepared herself for success. 00:24:37.47\00:24:40.01 Her resume was there, she just needed a little 00:24:40.04\00:24:42.78 tweaking to get it where it needed to be. 00:24:42.81\00:24:45.65 I want to share a personal story with you... 00:24:45.68\00:24:48.25 I remember writing a resume and actually reading it 00:24:48.28\00:24:54.32 and saying, "There's no way they're going to hire me." 00:24:54.36\00:24:57.99 I mean, I had the basics down but I think I saw 00:24:58.03\00:25:01.73 some gaps - I saw some things that umm - this will be a 00:25:01.76\00:25:05.57 miracle if it gets through, but I really, really 00:25:05.60\00:25:09.34 wanted this job and, over time, I got a little discouraged... 00:25:09.37\00:25:14.74 But I remember opening up my Promise Book and reading, 00:25:14.78\00:25:18.98 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." 00:25:19.01\00:25:22.52 Now I don't have the power to do all things by myself, 00:25:22.55\00:25:25.79 but the God that strengthens me does, 00:25:25.82\00:25:29.32 and interestingly enough, I sent the resume 00:25:29.36\00:25:32.83 in and I was as surprised as anybody that I got a call back. 00:25:32.86\00:25:36.83 But a manager called me and said, "Hey Eric, 00:25:36.87\00:25:39.80 we were reading your resume and we want you to 00:25:39.83\00:25:42.44 come in and talk," I'm like "really? 00:25:42.47\00:25:44.24 based on what I sent in?"
