This morning we're going to be looking at Biblical headship 00:00:14.94\00:00:18.25 in the Old Testament. But more specifically we're going to be 00:00:18.28\00:00:22.42 looking at Headship, the principle of headship in Genesis 00:00:22.45\00:00:26.55 One of the major contentions of those in favor of 00:00:26.59\00:00:32.69 the ordination of women is that the principle of headship 00:00:32.73\00:00:36.26 does not exist in the Bible and moreover it does not exist 00:00:36.30\00:00:39.73 in Genesis and specifically in Genesis, chapter 2. 00:00:39.77\00:00:44.31 That is in a prefall situation in the Book of Genesis 00:00:44.34\00:00:47.81 So, this morning we're gonna take a look at headship, 00:00:47.84\00:00:50.65 we're gonna briefly look at a statement that was produced 00:00:50.68\00:00:55.48 by the Theological faculty, at least some of them 00:00:55.52\00:00:58.85 at our University in Berrien Springs which purports to state 00:00:58.89\00:01:04.93 that the Bible says nothing about Biblical Headship. 00:01:04.96\00:01:09.26 So we'll take a look at that and then we're gonna take a look 00:01:09.30\00:01:11.67 at the Bible and what the Bible really has to say about the 00:01:11.70\00:01:14.00 Headship and how it affects the whole issue of Ordination. 00:01:14.04\00:01:19.27 Let me just mention in passing here that this ordination issue 00:01:19.31\00:01:23.75 is kind of a, it's not really addressing the real issue 00:01:23.78\00:01:29.58 the real issue is the Office of Elder and the Office of Minister 00:01:29.62\00:01:34.56 When we talk about Ordination we know it's laying on of hands 00:01:34.59\00:01:37.46 for service. You know we lay hands on medical missionaries 00:01:37.49\00:01:40.93 But they're not ordained as medical missionaries. We just 00:01:40.96\00:01:43.30 simply lay hands and they're consecrated for service. 00:01:43.33\00:01:45.77 The word Ordination has always been used as it relates to the 00:01:45.80\00:01:49.77 office of Minister, specifically and also Elder and Deacon 00:01:49.80\00:01:54.41 in the local church. So when we're addressing the whole issue 00:01:54.44\00:01:58.65 of Ordination we need to remem- ber that we're really talking 00:01:58.68\00:02:01.25 about what does the Bible say about who is qualified to serve 00:02:01.28\00:02:05.12 in the office of Elder or Minister. So let's keep our 00:02:05.15\00:02:10.26 focus on that particular issue and let's let the Bible 00:02:10.29\00:02:13.36 speak for itself. Now as we've already heard, the real issue 00:02:13.40\00:02:19.60 we're dealing with is not just ordination or the office of 00:02:19.63\00:02:21.87 Elder or Minister, it really boils down to hermeneutics. 00:02:21.90\00:02:25.27 And this issue of hermeneutics really began to develop early on 00:02:25.31\00:02:31.48 in 1960s at least as it relates to the issue of feminism. 00:02:31.51\00:02:36.95 When feminism got off the ground you may remember names like 00:02:36.99\00:02:40.92 Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinham in the 1960s-1970s 00:02:40.96\00:02:45.73 They were some of the proactive advocates of not just ordination 00:02:45.76\00:02:51.37 but women's liberation. And it was in the 1960s and 70s that 00:02:51.40\00:02:57.01 this country in general began to get away from propositional 00:02:57.04\00:03:04.25 truth and we began to embrace our feelings, that is if it 00:03:04.28\00:03:10.19 feels good let's do it. And in fact we can even see it today 00:03:10.22\00:03:14.79 with no longer having any respect for what the laws say 00:03:14.82\00:03:18.69 on the books as... immigration for example 00:03:18.73\00:03:21.56 We're gonna do it even though the law says we're not following 00:03:21.60\00:03:23.97 the law. Now in the 1960s you recall that there was the baby 00:03:24.00\00:03:28.97 boomer generation. In 1967 Timothy Leary came on the scene 00:03:29.00\00:03:36.01 and one of his sayings was, as he went around to various 00:03:36.04\00:03:39.38 universities and spoke was not only LSD but his phrase was 00:03:39.41\00:03:44.05 Turn On and Drop Out. And then we had the Summer of Love 00:03:44.09\00:03:49.19 and the Haight Ashbury district of San Francisco. And the Summer 00:03:49.22\00:03:53.96 of Love, if you read the Time Magazine article, it spoke about 00:03:54.00\00:03:58.30 the Summer of Love issue, the basic theme as I state it was 00:03:58.33\00:04:02.40 Trust Your Feelings. Trust Your Feelings. And that's what's been 00:04:02.44\00:04:07.18 happening in this country and that's what's been happening 00:04:07.21\00:04:09.18 in the church ever since the 60s and so what has happened to 00:04:09.21\00:04:13.21 propositional truth has gone by the wayside and we've been 00:04:13.25\00:04:16.92 trusting our feelings, what we think we wanna do is what 00:04:16.95\00:04:19.95 we're going to do. And so I mentioned Betty Friedan 00:04:19.99\00:04:25.36 I mentioned Gloria Steinham and within the church, 00:04:25.39\00:04:32.73 most of the churches had adopted to that point and 00:04:32.77\00:04:36.40 followed a faithful hermeneutic But a new hermeneutic began to 00:04:36.44\00:04:39.74 develop, developed long before this and that was the historical 00:04:39.77\00:04:44.71 critical method and following that as the women's movement 00:04:44.75\00:04:48.18 got underway, the Women's Liberation Movement 00:04:48.22\00:04:50.52 an evangelical feminist hermeneutic began to develop 00:04:50.55\00:04:53.96 in other words, evangelical feminists began to read certain 00:04:53.99\00:04:57.46 texts in the Bible a little bit differently than what you would 00:04:57.49\00:05:00.86 normally read from the surface, that is a plain reading of 00:05:00.90\00:05:03.53 Scripture. And lo and behold the Seventh Day Adventists 00:05:03.57\00:05:09.67 beginning in the 1970s, right around the time 1973 and 1975 00:05:09.70\00:05:17.05 also began to adopt a different way of reading certain scripture 00:05:17.08\00:05:21.28 dealing with women in the Bible. Specifically women in ministry. 00:05:21.32\00:05:25.89 And so we might call that an evolution of the Evangelical 00:05:25.92\00:05:30.59 Feminist Hermeneutic to the Adventist Feminist Hermeneutic. 00:05:30.63\00:05:34.40 And moreover, as we came to the theology of ordination study 00:05:34.43\00:05:39.47 committee it became quite evident, in fact it became quite 00:05:39.50\00:05:44.21 transparent, in fact they actually confessed that they 00:05:44.24\00:05:48.18 were using a different hermeneutic for certain texts 00:05:48.21\00:05:52.21 in the Bible. For certain troublesome texts, and those 00:05:52.25\00:05:56.85 troublesome texts would be texts like 1 Tim chapters 2 and 3 00:05:56.89\00:06:01.22 1 Cor chapter 11, 1 Cor:14 all the texts dealing with women 00:06:01.26\00:06:08.10 in the New Testament. And for these texts they adopted a new 00:06:08.13\00:06:12.00 hermeneutic called a Principle based Cultural Hermeneutic. 00:06:12.03\00:06:16.20 Well, just as a little prelude, it was in 1975 that we had a 00:06:16.24\00:06:23.08 Spring Council and in that Spring Council it was moved 00:06:23.11\00:06:26.75 and it was voted to allow women to be ordained as 00:06:26.78\00:06:30.69 local elders. That was a tip of the iceberg and that was 00:06:30.72\00:06:39.73 just for the North American Division. Then in 1984 in the 00:06:39.76\00:06:44.90 Fall Annual Council it was voted to go ahead and allow the 00:06:44.93\00:06:48.00 ordination of women as local elders worldwide if there was 00:06:48.04\00:06:52.64 no contention, if there were no problems you could go ahead and 00:06:52.67\00:06:55.01 do it. Now you must realize that the reason that they wanted 00:06:55.04\00:07:01.22 to start with the ordination of women as local elders because 00:07:01.25\00:07:03.89 that is simply the first step to becoming an ordained minister 00:07:03.92\00:07:07.72 And so we can trace this problem all the way back to 1975 00:07:07.76\00:07:13.09 and 1984. So the real issue we need to address here is 00:07:13.13\00:07:17.37 the ordination of local elders and the consequent ordination 00:07:17.40\00:07:22.04 of ministers as well. And so it's not in the upcoming 2015 00:07:22.07\00:07:28.21 General Conference session is important not to just address 00:07:28.24\00:07:31.05 the ordination of women as pastors, we need to address 00:07:31.08\00:07:33.98 a whole issue of local elders which began to circulate in 1975 00:07:34.02\00:07:39.52 So, this new hermeneutic that was confessed in the recent 00:07:39.55\00:07:46.23 theology of ordination study committee is called a principle 00:07:46.26\00:07:48.63 based contextual, linguistic, historical, cultural strategy 00:07:48.66\00:07:51.70 a mouthful, where they use extra Biblical sources. Now they say 00:07:51.73\00:07:57.44 however, that the Bible is revival in the salvation message 00:07:57.47\00:08:01.81 However, for certain troublesome text, those text determine the 00:08:01.84\00:08:08.35 hermeneutical approach that we use. Now this is their open 00:08:08.38\00:08:12.15 statement. For these text we use a slightly different approach 00:08:12.19\00:08:15.62 called a Principle based contextual historical cultural 00:08:15.66\00:08:20.20 grading strategy. Now what this really amounts to is a 00:08:20.23\00:08:24.97 variation of not the historical critical method, but certainly a 00:08:25.00\00:08:32.77 critical method of reading the Bible. And so they allow culture 00:08:32.81\00:08:37.25 to become a predominant theme in determining the Scripture 00:08:37.28\00:08:41.68 and moreover, let me read you this statement: 00:08:41.72\00:08:45.69 Did you get that? Meaning comes about as a result of an 00:09:01.17\00:09:05.64 interchange between the text and the reader. 00:09:05.67\00:09:07.81 In other words, you as the reader influence what the 00:09:07.84\00:09:10.38 text is saying. Not just the text or the text tells you 00:09:10.41\00:09:16.18 what its saying. You interact with the text and now you 00:09:16.22\00:09:19.79 help the text say what it really means. 00:09:19.82\00:09:21.66 This is in contrast to the real document, the methods of Bible 00:09:30.53\00:09:35.50 study document which was adopted in Rio de Janeiro 00:09:35.54\00:09:38.71 which states the following: 00:09:38.74\00:09:40.68 In other words a clear, plain statement of scripture 00:09:47.62\00:09:51.85 wherein its clear and plain. So the issue is not ordination 00:09:51.89\00:09:57.36 because in 1995 they said no ordination. So what did they do? 00:09:57.39\00:10:05.00 They just continued to commission. 00:10:05.03\00:10:07.90 So there is essentially no difference between commissioning 00:10:07.94\00:10:11.21 women as pastors and ordaining women as pastors. 00:10:11.24\00:10:14.38 No difference at all. The root of the problem is the office 00:10:14.41\00:10:19.85 the office of elder, the office of minister. Not just ordination 00:10:19.88\00:10:23.92 because we'll just commission instead. So there is a unifying 00:10:23.95\00:10:29.62 principle that runs throughout Scripture and that principle 00:10:29.66\00:10:31.73 is the principle of authority and the principle of submission. 00:10:31.76\00:10:35.23 The two go together. It's a unifying thread that runs from 00:10:35.26\00:10:38.30 Genesis to Revelation. It begins with Adam and Eve in the garden 00:10:38.33\00:10:42.60 in the pre-fall condition and it continues with Seth 00:10:42.64\00:10:46.41 it continues with Noah, it continues with Abraham 00:10:46.44\00:10:49.68 It continues with Isaac, it continues with Jacob, the 12 00:10:49.71\00:10:52.81 Patriarchs. Then it continues with our Savior Jesus who was 00:10:52.85\00:10:57.42 born as a man. Then it continues with the apostles who were all 00:10:57.45\00:11:01.82 men, that Jesus ordained. Then it continues with replacement of 00:11:01.86\00:11:06.03 Judas Iscariot with a man and it continues with the ordination 00:11:06.06\00:11:11.13 of seven male deacons. And it continues with the ordination of 00:11:11.17\00:11:15.24 by Paul, Timothy and Titus of men as elders in the church. 00:11:15.27\00:11:21.61 And then it concludes, let's quickly go to Revelation 00:11:21.64\00:11:25.95 and where we have the New Jerusalem, the 12 gates 00:11:25.98\00:11:30.15 and the 12 foundations - what are the names on them? 00:11:32.15\00:11:35.76 12 male apostles and 12 Patriarchs. So this principle of 00:11:35.79\00:11:41.66 male headship or just headship runs from Genesis all the way 00:11:41.70\00:11:45.70 to Revelation. And it seems as though our friends simply can't 00:11:45.73\00:11:50.97 see it. But even Rosemary Radford Reuther, a Catholic 00:11:51.01\00:11:56.78 theologian who said herself, it is very plain in Genesis 2 00:11:56.81\00:12:02.45 is speaking of male headship in the Garden of Eden. And 00:12:02.48\00:12:07.26 she couldn't handle it so she adopted a historical critical 00:12:07.29\00:12:11.66 method. Now here she is and she admits that's what the Bible 00:12:11.69\00:12:15.33 teaches. So here's a recent seminary statement Aug 2014 00:12:15.36\00:12:22.87 on Biblical headship and this is what they basically say, 00:12:22.90\00:12:25.47 they talk about a unique, non transferable headship of Christ 00:12:25.51\00:12:29.88 That's what the Bible teaches they say. A unique non 00:12:29.91\00:12:33.52 transferable headship of Christ and they try to justify this 00:12:33.55\00:12:37.65 by only taking a portion of the Bible and by only taking a 00:12:37.69\00:12:40.72 portion of the Spirit of Prophecy and they leave out all 00:12:40.76\00:12:43.73 the other pertinent text. Let me read you one that is pertinent. 00:12:43.76\00:12:47.66 One other statement in Signs of The Times in 1890, April 7 00:13:09.35\00:13:14.49 Ordination. So we're going to take a look now at the principle 00:14:00.37\00:14:06.34 of headship in Genesis 1-3, then we'll quickly look at some 00:14:06.37\00:14:10.45 of the texts in the New Test- ament. Now the view that we're 00:14:10.48\00:14:15.38 taking here is of course that creation headship existed 00:14:15.42\00:14:19.35 in the Garden of Eden before the fall. And after the fall 00:14:19.39\00:14:22.49 that headship was ordained of God and imposed upon Adam n Eve. 00:14:22.52\00:14:29.56 The second view is of course there was no creation headship 00:14:29.60\00:14:33.34 in the Garden of Eden before the fall, but after the fall 00:14:33.37\00:14:36.24 a servant leadership was divinely imposed by God on 00:14:36.27\00:14:40.91 Adam. No creation headship in the Garden. That's the position 00:14:40.94\00:14:46.01 of our friends advocating the ordination of women. Now you see 00:14:46.05\00:14:52.09 we can establish, clearly we will establish with 26 points 00:14:52.12\00:14:56.69 that there was in fact male headship in the Garden of Eden 00:14:56.73\00:15:01.26 If they can establish that there was no make headship, then 00:15:01.30\00:15:06.23 of course they have a good case. 00:15:06.27\00:15:07.60 But the point of this presentation is to refute 00:15:07.64\00:15:10.21 their position and demonstrate that male headship did exist in 00:15:10.24\00:15:13.54 in pre-fall condition in the Garden and of course after 00:15:13.58\00:15:16.71 the fall. So in the beginning God said: 00:15:16.75\00:15:21.88 Now in one paper it states that there was no hint of male 00:15:30.39\00:15:35.73 headship in the Garden of Eden in Genesis chapter 1. 00:15:35.76\00:15:38.73 No hint. But we will enumerate in this presentation at least 00:15:38.77\00:15:43.07 26 points of male headship including Genesis chapter 1. 00:15:43.10\00:15:47.51 Where God said, let Us make man in our image. So let's go ahead 00:15:47.54\00:15:53.28 here, by the way Genesis 3 concerning the fall is basically 00:15:53.31\00:15:58.19 a commentary on Genesis 2. Now let's take a look at a few 00:15:58.22\00:16:01.02 statements by Ellen White on this issue of male headship 00:16:01.06\00:16:03.39 Let's see what she has to say. 00:16:03.43\00:16:04.83 And by the way when it says Adam was to stand as the head of the 00:16:27.75\00:16:31.35 human family, it goes on to say 00:16:31.39\00:16:34.32 What does that tell us about the heavenly family? 00:16:45.67\00:16:49.17 If Adam was the head then there must be heads in the heavenly 00:16:49.20\00:16:51.97 family and in other words the angels must have leaders 00:16:52.01\00:16:55.01 or heads as well. And as in Vol 6 of Testimonies, pg.236 00:16:55.04\00:17:00.12 Number 5 for Ellen White: 00:17:00.15\00:17:02.18 So what is missing in all of these statements by Ellen White? 00:17:20.24\00:17:24.31 Well, we don't find any co- monarchs, we don't find any 00:17:24.34\00:17:26.94 co-vicegerents, we don't find any kings and queens 00:17:26.98\00:17:31.11 we don't find any co-heads, we don't find any co-sovereigns 00:17:31.15\00:17:36.22 we don't find any co-rulers co-representatives of co-lords. 00:17:36.25\00:17:40.26 What we do find is that Adam was the monarch and sovereign 00:17:41.92\00:17:45.96 of the earthly family, the head of the earthly family. 00:17:45.99\00:17:50.60 When she uses the words monarch and sovereign, those words 00:17:50.63\00:17:55.34 connote the idea of singularity. Single. Adam was solely 00:17:55.37\00:18:02.11 the monarch. No one else, not Eve. Ok now the first point 00:18:02.14\00:18:08.92 out of Genesis concerning Biblical headship 00:18:08.95\00:18:10.95 Now if God had intended for man and woman to have equal roles 00:18:15.72\00:18:19.96 He could've certainly created them simultaneously 00:18:21.36\00:18:24.50 from the dust of the earth, right? But God saw it fit 00:18:24.53\00:18:27.87 to do it, it appears in a very cumbersome way and first created 00:18:27.90\00:18:31.57 Adam from the dust and then after talking with Adam, and 00:18:31.61\00:18:35.31 going through all kinds of things He then put Adam to sleep 00:18:35.34\00:18:38.48 took a rib from his side and created the woman. 00:18:38.51\00:18:40.92 Why did He go to all that trouble? 00:18:40.95\00:18:44.59 So do we have co-representative of heads here? Adam's actions 00:18:47.52\00:18:51.19 actions alone affected the human race. 00:18:51.23\00:18:54.10 His actions alone affected the whole human race 00:18:58.90\00:19:02.77 because he was the head. The race was redeemed by the 00:19:02.80\00:19:07.21 last Adam, not the last Adam and Eve. The Bible doesn't talk 00:19:07.24\00:19:12.38 about the last Eve or a second Eve, it does talk about a 00:19:12.41\00:19:15.28 last Adam or what we call a second Adam. And so, 00:19:15.32\00:19:19.69 as the redeemed are in heaven and they approach Jesus 00:19:19.72\00:19:25.19 something happens and here is the following. GC page 647 00:19:25.23\00:19:30.50 No the father and the mother of the race. 00:19:46.95\00:19:49.08 The two Adams. The second Adam, Christ, replaced the first Adam 00:19:49.12\00:19:54.49 the new head of the human race. 00:19:54.52\00:19:59.16 So prior to the creation of Eve we have Adam who was provided 00:20:10.37\00:20:13.01 with a garden home, not Eve. Adam was then placed in the 00:20:13.04\00:20:16.31 garden. Adam was provided with a source of food. And then 00:20:16.34\00:20:19.81 Adam was instructed by God about the Garden to tend and 00:20:19.85\00:20:22.98 keep it and to bear rule or to rule in the garden. 00:20:23.02\00:20:26.92 So Adam was clearly in charge at this point as were in the 00:20:26.96\00:20:31.69 other part of Genesis 2. Number 3 00:20:31.73\00:20:36.23 God made it clear to Adam that he had accountability 00:20:39.07\00:20:44.77 in the garden. That is he was instructed about the 00:20:44.81\00:20:47.68 Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, and only he. 00:20:47.71\00:20:50.11 That is person to person, face to face by God. 00:20:50.15\00:20:53.15 So we have face to face, we have priority of creation 00:20:53.18\00:20:57.65 priority of communication with Adam not with Eve 00:20:57.69\00:21:00.59 We have priority of leadership accountability 00:21:00.62\00:21:03.73 about the forbidden tree. And all of this instills a sense of 00:21:03.76\00:21:07.66 headship in Adam. He knows that he is in charge. Of course this 00:21:07.70\00:21:11.20 is before the woman comes on the scene. And then God says 00:21:11.23\00:21:15.20 So Adam is given a helper. Now I'm not going to go through all 00:21:17.87\00:21:22.14 of the theological ideas here about Hebrew and _ but 00:21:22.18\00:21:26.78 let me just state that in 1 Cor 11:9 Paul alludes to the 00:21:26.82\00:21:31.15 idea about a helper when he says that 00:21:31.19\00:21:33.92 that is as a helper for the man. And then number 5 00:21:38.26\00:21:42.83 Now naming in the Bible always connotes the idea of authority 00:21:45.77\00:21:50.71 Whoever's naming is the one in charge. And so God brings 00:21:50.74\00:21:55.01 all the animals to Adam and Adam names all the animals. 00:21:55.04\00:21:59.35 And the woman later just simply accepts the names. She doesn't 00:21:59.38\00:22:03.69 contradict Adam and change any names. 00:22:03.72\00:22:05.95 This is Paul's justification for headship in 1 Cor 11. 00:22:15.06\00:22:19.67 In 1 Cor 11:3 he talks about the principle of headship 00:22:19.70\00:22:25.57 Christ is the head of man, man is the head of woman 00:22:25.61\00:22:28.74 and God is the head of Christ. Then it goes on to state 00:22:28.78\00:22:32.28 that Adam, Paul then speaks about, he brings about the idea 00:22:32.31\00:22:36.82 why man is head of the woman and he justifies it by stating that 00:22:36.85\00:22:41.49 Man is not from the woman but the woman is from man 00:22:41.52\00:22:44.99 going back to the idea in Genesis 2:22. The rib was made 00:22:45.03\00:22:50.43 into a woman, the rib taken from Adam. 00:22:50.47\00:22:52.50 Now this idea of bringing the woman to Adam, God is basically 00:22:59.07\00:23:05.35 giving a gift to Adam. In fact of all the gifts given to Adam 00:23:05.38\00:23:12.19 Ellen White says the following. That Eve was the one gift which 00:23:12.22\00:23:17.06 in his eyes out-valued every other gift. In fact, 00:23:17.09\00:23:22.56 she out-valued every other gift so much that he allowed her 00:23:22.60\00:23:27.77 to take precedence over the Word of God. 00:23:27.80\00:23:31.47 Well the whole idea of present- ing the woman as a gift to Adam 00:23:32.97\00:23:37.28 again infused Adam with the idea of headship. And moreover, 00:23:37.31\00:23:43.12 it becomes even more clearer when we go to point no.8 00:23:43.15\00:23:45.85 So probably the first words Eve ever heard were from the 00:23:48.39\00:23:52.93 voice of Adam. She didn't say to him 'Adam where'd you come from' 00:23:52.96\00:23:58.83 God brings the woman to Adam and Adam says the following to her 00:24:02.57\00:24:08.31 This is now bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh. 00:24:08.34\00:24:11.51 In other words he informs the woman of her origin. 00:24:11.55\00:24:15.62 And the woman gains an under- standing of who she is. 00:24:15.65\00:24:19.99 That is, she realizes that her source is from Adam. 00:24:20.02\00:24:24.39 That she came from him and somehow he takes priority 00:24:25.49\00:24:29.50 because she came from him. So the woman gains 00:24:29.53\00:24:33.47 a self understanding of her relationship with Adam 00:24:33.50\00:24:36.74 in this whole idea where she is brought to the man and then 00:24:36.77\00:24:41.01 the man speaks first, this is bone of my bone 00:24:41.04\00:24:43.41 flesh of my flesh. Point no.9 00:24:43.45\00:24:45.61 Now this is a generic name that is true, it's not the word 00:24:50.49\00:24:53.49 it's not the name Eve, it's a generic name but whenever 00:24:53.52\00:24:56.29 names were given, for example God called the light Day 00:24:56.32\00:24:59.33 He called the firmament heaven, He called the dry land earth 00:24:59.36\00:25:02.96 These were all names. Likewise He called the woman, she shall 00:25:03.00\00:25:11.37 be called Woman - a name. So Eve realizes Adam's leadership 00:25:11.41\00:25:16.14 as she gets acquainted with where she came from. 00:25:16.18\00:25:19.81 This is all from Genesis 2 before the fall. 00:25:24.49\00:25:27.72 Now Paul alludes to this in Ephesians 5, where he says 00:25:35.70\00:25:41.50 I tell you a mystery, the two shall be one flesh. This is a 00:25:41.54\00:25:46.11 a great mystery concerning Christ and His church. 00:25:46.14\00:25:49.74 The two shall become one flesh. This is a great mystery 00:25:49.78\00:25:54.68 concerning Christ and His church Now Paul has already stated that 00:25:54.72\00:25:58.05 Christ is the head of the church just as the husband is head 00:25:58.09\00:26:01.89 of the wife. But when he puts it in the context of 00:26:01.92\00:26:05.06 the two shall become one flesh and he says it's a mystery 00:26:05.09\00:26:10.20 of Christ and the church and Christ is the head of the church 00:26:10.23\00:26:12.57 and the husband is the head of the wife, clearly Paul is making 00:26:12.60\00:26:16.10 the point that the husband is the head of the wife because 00:26:16.14\00:26:19.21 it dates back all the way to pre-fall when they were brought 00:26:19.24\00:26:22.54 together as one flesh. Okay now we're going to Genesis 3 00:26:22.58\00:26:28.92 We have 10 points in Genesis 2 in the pre-fall situation. 00:26:28.95\00:26:33.52 What does she do? She leaves the protective sphere of her husband 00:26:37.03\00:26:42.36 She was told to stay by the side of her husband and Adam was told 00:26:42.40\00:26:47.87 to protect her. And so the serpent said to the woman 00:26:47.90\00:26:51.64 Has God said you shall not eat of every tree in the Garden? 00:26:51.67\00:26:55.08 And rather than the woman fleeing immediately to seek 00:26:55.11\00:26:59.51 counsel from Adam she goes ahead and begins to dialogue 00:26:59.55\00:27:03.59 with the serpent. In other words she begins to assume 00:27:03.62\00:27:07.72 independence and assert a leadership role or position. 00:27:07.76\00:27:12.23 She leaves the protective sphere of Adam and she seeks a higher 00:27:12.26\00:27:16.63 sphere than her original position. Now let me read you a 00:27:16.67\00:27:21.40 statement here from Ellen White A higher sphere. 00:27:21.44\00:27:24.24 What was her original sphere? Her husband's side. 00:27:42.09\00:27:48.30 She was perfectly happy by her husband's side. 00:27:48.33\00:27:50.63 And she goes on then to state that women today are doing the 00:28:13.76\00:28:18.93 same thing. Reaching for positions for which they are not 00:28:18.96\00:28:22.23 qualified, seeking to enter a higher sphere. Now they were not 00:28:22.26\00:28:26.74 seeking to be like God which which is what our theologian 00:28:26.77\00:28:30.61 friends on the other side would say. Well she was seeking a 00:28:30.64\00:28:33.98 higher sphere to be like God. No, Ellen White is making it 00:28:34.01\00:28:37.35 very clear in her statement. Her original sphere was by her 00:28:37.38\00:28:40.92 husband's side and when she left her husband's side 00:28:40.95\00:28:44.09 she was seeking a higher sphere of equality, leadership 00:28:44.12\00:28:49.16 She initiates the dialogue with Satan and she puts it in the 00:28:49.19\00:28:53.43 context to women today who are seeking a higher sphere 00:28:53.46\00:28:56.26 and they're certainly not trying to be equal with God 00:28:56.30\00:28:58.00 but they're seeking a higher sphere. Number 12. 00:28:58.03\00:29:02.84 And so the serpent speaks to the woman as though she were 00:29:16.38\00:29:20.89 the head, that she was in charge so she could make the decision 00:29:20.92\00:29:24.66 herself. In other words, Satan is attempting to reverse 00:29:24.69\00:29:30.67 the headship principle right there. He knew what the 00:29:30.70\00:29:32.70 principle was and he knew he couldn't get to Adam, he knew 00:29:32.73\00:29:35.87 Adam would never be deceived with a direct confrontation 00:29:35.90\00:29:39.61 so he goes through the woman to get to the man. 00:29:39.64\00:29:41.88 He's attempting to reverse the headship principle 00:29:41.91\00:29:46.41 and put her in charge. Does he succeed? Yes. 00:29:46.45\00:29:51.12 The serpent deceives Eve and the woman responds 00:29:51.15\00:29:54.59 to the serpent's statements with leadership aspirations. 00:29:54.62\00:29:58.29 So what does the woman do here she forsakes Adam's headship 00:30:09.00\00:30:12.94 when she takes of the tree and she eats. 00:30:12.97\00:30:16.85 And at that point she makes Satan her head and forsakes Adam 00:30:16.88\00:30:24.15 I feel so good, I've never felt so exhilarated in all my life 00:30:38.63\00:30:43.51 I feel no harmful effects. So Eve urges Adam to eat 00:30:43.54\00:30:52.25 and when she does so she urges him to relinquish his headship 00:30:52.28\00:30:55.92 position. Adam thinks about it Adam mourns because he knows 00:30:55.95\00:31:02.89 what has happened. He mourns that he permitted Eve to wander 00:31:02.92\00:31:06.33 from his side. He knew he should've kept his eye 00:31:06.36\00:31:08.66 and he should've been protect- ing her. He knew what happened 00:31:08.70\00:31:11.83 He failed to protect Eve. Adam recognizes his failure 00:31:11.87\00:31:16.77 and as he thinks about it his headship hangs in the balance. 00:31:16.81\00:31:21.84 And he took of the fruit and he ate. He made his decision. 00:31:30.35\00:31:35.29 I want the woman. Adam relinquishes his headship 00:31:35.32\00:31:42.16 position, he ate, the role reversal was consummated 00:31:42.20\00:31:46.30 and we read the following in Patriarchs and Prophets, pg.56 00:31:46.33\00:31:49.77 Through the woman, Satan conquered the man. 00:31:49.80\00:31:52.17 And through the man Satan conquered the race. 00:31:52.21\00:31:56.34 You see the sequence? Through the woman Satan conquered man 00:31:56.38\00:32:01.65 and through the man Satan conquered the race, but he had 00:32:01.68\00:32:07.12 to get to the woman first. This all spells male headship 00:32:07.16\00:32:11.39 Isn't it so abundantly clear? 00:32:11.43\00:32:16.63 No. 16. Now here is the un- equivocal evidence of male 00:32:16.67\00:32:20.30 headship and role reversal in the Bible. 00:32:20.34\00:32:24.74 Now that happened not when Eve ate the fruit but 00:32:27.68\00:32:31.01 when Adam ate the fruit. Why not Eve? She did it first. 00:32:31.05\00:32:37.85 Only when Adam ate the fruit, by the way our friends 00:32:37.89\00:32:42.66 our theological faculty members at Andrews University 00:32:42.69\00:32:47.13 never want to cite this text 00:32:47.16\00:32:48.73 And Adam ate the fruit and they both became naked. 00:32:50.27\00:32:53.87 When Adam ate the fruit. In other words this was the signal 00:32:55.40\00:32:59.21 that Adam was responsible. He was the head. Not Eve. 00:32:59.24\00:33:05.61 In other words the generic transgression of Eve did not 00:33:05.65\00:33:09.38 cause nakedness. If Adam had remained loyal what would God 00:33:09.42\00:33:13.25 have done? He would've given a new wife. 00:33:13.29\00:33:16.66 Here's what Ellen White says, pg.56 of Patriarchs and Prophets 00:33:16.69\00:33:20.43 He would have a new wife apparently. 00:33:32.74\00:33:35.44 He doesn't say to Eve where are you, he says Adam where are you? 00:33:43.39\00:33:47.96 So Adam's headship is confirmed by the priority of nakedness 00:33:50.43\00:33:53.33 priority of apprehension, priority of accountability. 00:33:53.36\00:33:57.00 And so we have priority of creation, nakedness apprehension 00:34:06.34\00:34:09.98 accountability and also priority of indictment by God 00:34:10.01\00:34:13.95 and priority of interrogation by God. To Adam, not Eve. 00:34:13.98\00:34:19.99 And then No. 19 Adam indicts himself. 00:34:20.02\00:34:24.29 So what does Adam do here with these words? He basically 00:34:33.44\00:34:37.01 indicts himself. Listen to this. Adam acknowledges his headship 00:34:37.04\00:34:42.81 failure by acknowledging he failed to protect his gift. 00:34:42.84\00:34:47.32 You gave me that woman, that's the gift. 00:34:47.35\00:34:53.76 You gave me. The woman you gave me. 00:34:53.79\00:34:56.06 No.2 He yields to Eve's leadership, he gave me 00:34:56.09\00:35:03.87 She gave me of the tree and I ate 00:35:03.90\00:35:07.27 He confesses I yielded to her leadership. 00:35:07.30\00:35:10.97 No.3, He relinquished his head ship role and he says 00:35:11.01\00:35:16.24 I ate. So Adam indicts himself with those three ideas. 00:35:16.28\00:35:21.62 You gave me, she gave me, I ate. 00:35:21.65\00:35:24.35 So again we have headship confirmed because she was 00:35:36.06\00:35:39.33 interrogated second and she transgressed first. 00:35:39.37\00:35:45.01 So Satan deceived Eve by speaking to her as though 00:35:45.04\00:35:48.71 she were the head and, (2) she was deceived because she doubted 00:35:48.74\00:35:53.98 the Word of God. If you don't want to be deceived, 00:35:54.02\00:35:58.99 don't doubt the Word of God. Take a plain Thus saith the Lord 00:35:59.02\00:36:04.36 Now folks, I think we have to face facts. People that are 00:36:07.76\00:36:15.14 simply denying a plain reading of Scripture on this whole issue 00:36:15.17\00:36:17.27 and doubting what the plain Word of God says are being 00:36:17.31\00:36:22.71 deceived. They're allowing themselves to be deceived. 00:36:22.74\00:36:26.45 which leads to spiritualism, when you doubt the authority 00:36:28.78\00:36:35.69 of God and you make yourself an authority instead. 00:36:35.72\00:36:39.79 So Adam's headship is restored by God by divine decree. He 00:36:56.21\00:37:01.25 will rule over you Eve and harmony is restored. 00:37:01.28\00:37:04.55 Now let's look at this idea of harmony. 00:37:04.59\00:37:06.79 So we have harmony before the fall and we have harmony 00:37:28.71\00:37:34.15 preserved after the fall. Now our friends will take this 00:37:34.18\00:37:40.82 statement from Ellen White and state, well here, here it is. 00:37:40.86\00:37:43.32 She was placed in subjection only after the fall. 00:37:43.36\00:37:47.70 Now let's read the entire context. She's saying that 00:37:49.06\00:37:52.13 harmony existed before the fall Eve was equal with Adam 00:37:52.17\00:37:56.04 in harmony with each other but after their fall their union 00:37:56.07\00:37:59.31 could be maintained and harmony preserved only by submission 00:37:59.34\00:38:01.84 on part of one or the other. In other words, what she's doing 00:38:01.88\00:38:05.91 here is contrasting pre-fall harmony which was natural 00:38:05.95\00:38:09.25 with post fall harmony which would be unnatural or imposed by 00:38:09.28\00:38:14.92 God. So what is happening here is simply restoration of the 00:38:14.96\00:38:20.20 headship principle which existed before the fall and now is 00:38:20.23\00:38:23.57 gonna be imposed after the fall. Harmony began with, now harmony 00:38:23.60\00:38:28.60 is gonna be imposed or preserved after the fall. 00:38:28.64\00:38:32.54 In other words, because you have listened to your wife 00:38:42.82\00:38:45.15 this is what's gonna happen. He was held accountable for 00:38:45.19\00:38:49.66 two reasons - listening to the voice of his wife 00:38:49.69\00:38:51.53 headship replaced by Eve, and secondly disobedience to God. 00:38:51.56\00:38:56.73 So the death sentence was not pronounced upon Eve 00:39:14.75\00:39:18.15 and of course this is confirmed in the New Testament 00:39:18.19\00:39:20.72 in Romans 5. By one man sin came into the world, and 00:39:20.76\00:39:23.39 death through sin and therefore death spread to all men 00:39:23.43\00:39:26.36 because of which all sinned. So death came into existence 00:39:26.39\00:39:30.70 not because of Adam and Eve but because of what Adam did. 00:39:30.73\00:39:34.94 And the two Adams are contrasted repeatedly by Paul in Romans 00:39:34.97\00:39:39.37 Romans 5 in particular. The two Adams are contrasted because 00:39:39.41\00:39:44.08 one began as the head of the human race and the second Adam 00:39:44.11\00:39:48.15 ends up as the head of the human race. Not co-heads 00:39:48.18\00:39:51.95 at the beginning and not co-heads at the end. 00:39:51.99\00:39:54.99 So again he names the woman but he names her Eve this time 00:40:05.60\00:40:08.87 the mother of all the living, again signifying his authority 00:40:08.90\00:40:12.94 over the woman, naming the woman. And the woman listens 00:40:12.97\00:40:18.75 and accepts her name. She reassumes her natural role 00:40:18.78\00:40:23.72 And so we have in the beginning Adam is placed in the garden 00:40:29.96\00:40:36.33 followed by the woman and at the end we have Adam expelled from 00:40:36.36\00:40:41.77 the garden and the woman simply following Adam. So we begin 00:40:41.80\00:40:47.61 in Genesis 2 with Adam in the garden followed by the woman 00:40:47.64\00:40:53.31 we end in Genesis 3 with Adam leading the woman 00:40:53.35\00:40:58.29 out of the garden. In both cases Adam begins, and Adam leads. 00:40:58.32\00:41:03.36 By the way that is a perfect inclusio but I won't go into the 00:41:03.39\00:41:08.86 inclusio idea just now. 00:41:08.90\00:41:10.47 The declaration-Let Us make man There is clearly one personal 00:41:20.64\00:41:27.52 Godhead speaking to the other, Let Us 00:41:27.55\00:41:32.49 This implies that the one saying Let Us has authority telling the 00:41:32.52\00:41:36.89 other, Let us begin to make man and woman, implies that there 00:41:36.93\00:41:42.93 is authority and submission in the Trinity. So the image 00:41:42.96\00:41:47.34 of the Trinity is to be reflected in the male female 00:41:47.37\00:41:51.67 relationship-Let Us make man in Our image, male and female 00:41:51.71\00:41:55.74 He made them in the image of God. Headship or authority 00:41:55.78\00:41:59.41 and submission in the Godhead Let Us make, likewise in the 00:41:59.45\00:42:02.68 image of God, male and female. So is there headship 00:42:02.72\00:42:07.26 in the Trinity, in the Godhead in Genesis 1? Indeed there is 00:42:08.39\00:42:12.29 a hint. Here's Ellen White's statement. 00:42:12.33\00:42:16.63 Now this is before man was ever created and Satan clearly 00:42:39.92\00:42:47.30 sees Jesus in a subordinate role to the Father 00:42:47.33\00:42:53.67 Okay that concludes the idea of Biblical headship in Genesis. 00:42:57.07\00:43:01.91 Now we're briefly gonna take a look at 1 Cor 11 and 1 Tim 2 00:43:01.94\00:43:05.75 Ingel Sark is gonna deal much more with this, I'm just gonna 00:43:05.78\00:43:08.32 allude to it briefly. In 1 Cor 11, we have the whole idea 00:43:08.35\00:43:13.89 of Biblical male headship in 1 Cor 11:3 00:43:13.92\00:43:19.09 Christ is the head of man, man is the head of woman 00:43:21.13\00:43:26.10 and God is the head of Christ. That's the principle 00:43:26.13\00:43:29.10 of headship in the Bible which our friends at the Seminary 00:43:29.14\00:43:35.31 didn't even want to cite. 00:43:35.34\00:43:37.01 And then Paul goes on to say in 1 Cor 11, Man is not from 00:43:41.58\00:43:46.05 the woman but the woman is from man and man was not created for 00:43:46.09\00:43:51.09 the woman but the woman for man and he takes those ideas 00:43:51.13\00:43:54.70 directly from Genesis 2 and that's why we read in Genesis 2 00:43:54.73\00:44:01.24 and it's quite evident when we are reading Genesis 2 just the 00:44:01.27\00:44:04.44 way Rosemary Reuther read it it was obvious on the surface 00:44:04.47\00:44:09.84 what seems to be so invisible to others. 00:44:09.88\00:44:15.22 So clearly there is no reciprocity in headship 00:44:17.19\00:44:20.42 based on 1 Cor 11. And Paul makes it very clear that 00:44:20.46\00:44:25.63 the man is to be the head of the woman in the church 00:44:25.66\00:44:28.50 he uses the principle in verse 3 to establish the principle 00:44:28.53\00:44:32.63 then he goes on to say the following 00:44:32.67\00:44:37.77 he talks about head coverings which is an application of the 00:44:37.81\00:44:40.68 principle man is not to cover his head and these are the 00:44:40.71\00:44:44.38 reasons why, man is the glory of God, the woman is for the 00:44:44.41\00:44:48.15 glory of man. Get the difference Man is for the glory of God 00:44:48.18\00:44:52.52 the woman is for the glory of man. Man is not from the woman 00:44:52.55\00:44:55.19 but the woman is from man, v8. And the woman was not created 00:44:55.22\00:44:58.56 man was not created for the woman but the woman was 00:44:58.59\00:45:01.43 created for the man. All the reasons for male headship. 00:45:01.46\00:45:07.00 Thus the woman needs authority on her head, at least that 00:45:07.04\00:45:10.41 would be the application. Now there would be a different 00:45:10.44\00:45:12.51 application today. Head covering represent respect for the head 00:45:12.54\00:45:19.28 or the authority figure. In this case the man being the authority 00:45:19.31\00:45:26.35 figure in the church. So man was created for God, woman was 00:45:26.39\00:45:32.33 created for man and the woman was created from the man. 00:45:32.36\00:45:36.60 So we have the principle of headship clearly established 00:45:36.63\00:45:40.84 here in 1 Cor 11. Established before the fall. In 1 Tim 2 00:45:40.87\00:45:47.51 and 3, Paul was really dealing with the question-how are you to 00:45:47.54\00:45:53.95 behave in the household of God. That's the whole question. 00:45:53.98\00:45:56.99 And that's how he concludes at the end of chapter 3 00:45:57.02\00:45:59.65 I write these things so you might know how to conduct 00:45:59.69\00:46:02.76 yourself in the household of God. So the whole issue in the 00:46:02.79\00:46:06.16 2 chapters is how to conduct yourself in the household of God 00:46:06.19\00:46:09.03 He talks about men praying and women adorning themselves 00:46:09.06\00:46:13.20 in particular ways. Women should learn quietly, with submission 00:46:13.23\00:46:17.17 with no meddling. Women should not teach or have authority 00:46:17.21\00:46:20.88 or usurp authority over man and the rationale he gives is 00:46:20.91\00:46:25.08 Adam was formed first and then Eve. The second rationale, Eve 00:46:25.11\00:46:29.38 was deceived in sin first, head- ship reversal but nevertheless 00:46:29.42\00:46:33.99 woman will be saved if she remains faithful 00:46:34.02\00:46:38.89 in childbearing. What is he saying here? He's basically 00:46:38.93\00:46:43.10 saying that her primary role is in the home, 1 Tim 2. 00:46:43.13\00:46:48.90 So he's distinguishing between the role of man in the church 00:46:48.94\00:46:53.17 and the role of woman. The primary role of woman is 00:46:53.21\00:46:55.54 as Ellen White was mentioned earlier this morning, 00:46:55.58\00:46:59.51 the woman is more important than the man, not only at home 00:46:59.55\00:47:04.79 but probably in church because of her responsibility in raising 00:47:04.82\00:47:08.36 God-fearing children. There is nothing more important. 00:47:08.39\00:47:12.16 However, in church God has appointed certain leaders. 00:47:18.53\00:47:21.44 And He's given qualifications for those leaders 00:47:21.47\00:47:24.37 And by the way, the prerequisite the number one prerequisite 00:47:24.41\00:47:28.31 for being a leader in the church a spiritual leader 00:47:28.34\00:47:30.31 or an elder is you must be a man. The leader must be a man. 00:47:30.35\00:47:35.28 That's a prerequisite, it's not qualification. 00:47:35.32\00:47:38.15 It's a prerequisite, you must be a man. Then if you are a man 00:47:38.19\00:47:43.22 you must also have these other qualifications. 00:47:43.26\00:47:45.46 You must be godly, you must be blameless and if you're married 00:47:45.49\00:47:48.43 you must have only one wife and so on, be a faithful husband 00:47:48.46\00:47:51.47 you should be able to rule your house well. 00:47:51.50\00:47:56.47 And therefore, he goes on to say in chapter 3, Elders are to be 00:47:56.50\00:47:59.91 men of one wife able to teach and rule their household well. 00:47:59.94\00:48:03.61 And there are 59 occurrences of the word man 00:48:03.65\00:48:06.58 in the New Testament and in every case they're male subjects 00:48:06.61\00:48:12.55 In other words, this idea of Bishop or Elder must be a 00:48:12.59\00:48:19.23 man of one woman or a husband of one wife 00:48:19.26\00:48:22.43 It cannot be interpreted as a spouse of one spouse, 00:48:22.46\00:48:25.97 which our friends are trying to do, in fact that's what many 00:48:26.00\00:48:29.34 of them are trying to do at the theological ordination study 00:48:29.37\00:48:32.27 committee that we just finished with, as spouse of one spouse 00:48:32.31\00:48:35.38 No, Paul is very specific about this. Able to teach and refute 00:48:38.78\00:48:44.12 Paul teaches us some primary qualifications able to deal with 00:48:44.15\00:48:47.66 false teachers that come into the church and are causing havoc 00:48:47.69\00:48:51.19 authoritative teaching of elders in the church is repeatedly 00:48:54.96\00:48:58.60 referred to in the Bible 1 Tim 2:12, 3:2, 4:11 00:48:58.63\00:49:04.97 Titus 2:15, Hebrews 13:7, 17, 24 Authoritative teaching of elders 00:49:05.01\00:49:12.85 primarily in terms of rebuking false teachers. 00:49:12.88\00:49:16.18 So, qualified men are only permitted to be elders 00:49:16.22\00:49:22.82 and basically Paul is prohibit- ing women from functioning 00:49:22.86\00:49:27.16 as elders. He makes it very clear in 1 Tim chapters 2 and 3. 00:49:27.20\00:49:32.20 So the issue at stake here is not the appointment of women 00:49:32.23\00:49:36.34 into ministry, we encourage the appointment of women into all 00:49:36.37\00:49:40.08 kinds of ministry, but only one restriction and that restriction 00:49:40.11\00:49:47.65 is the Biblical office of elder which many times includes the 00:49:47.68\00:49:53.49 minister. In times past when a minister was ordained he was 00:49:53.52\00:49:58.86 at first called a pastor or an elder, he was first called an 00:49:58.89\00:50:04.83 elder at that time. So let's go on here. 00:50:04.87\00:50:09.04 Paul concludes his statement about how to conduct yourself 00:50:11.31\00:50:15.98 in the household of God and he says without controversy 00:50:16.01\00:50:18.48 Great is the mystery of Godliness. God was manifested 00:50:18.51\00:50:22.82 in the flesh. Now why does Paul conclude with a statement like 00:50:22.85\00:50:26.76 that, that doesn't seem to harmonize with the rest of the 00:50:26.79\00:50:30.16 text that we're reading. Without controversy great is the mystery 00:50:30.19\00:50:35.00 of Godliness, God was manifest in the flesh referring to Jesus 00:50:35.03\00:50:38.40 All this is an allusion to the condescension of the Son of God 00:50:38.43\00:50:42.30 stepping down to be our Savior and it all has to do with 00:50:42.34\00:50:45.71 headship and submission as it relates to how to conduct 00:50:45.74\00:50:49.38 yourself in the house of God between men and women 00:50:49.41\00:50:51.61 So Paul concludes with that statement about relationship 00:50:51.65\00:50:55.32 of the Son of God to the Father the mystery of Godliness. 00:50:55.35\00:50:59.15 So we have authority throughout the universe. There are a number 00:51:03.46\00:51:06.70 of statements by Ellen White which I'm not going to read 00:51:06.73\00:51:09.36 right now but she makes it very clear that there are angels 00:51:09.40\00:51:13.23 who are in charge of other angels, there are commanding 00:51:13.27\00:51:17.47 angels and these commanding angels are always a little bit 00:51:17.51\00:51:21.48 taller than the other angels in their company 00:51:21.51\00:51:25.28 the angels were marshaled in companies with their commanding 00:51:25.31\00:51:28.45 angel being taller at their head The very highest angels in the 00:51:28.48\00:51:32.82 heavenly court are appointed to work out prayers which ascend 00:51:32.85\00:51:35.92 to God, Bible Commentary pg.1173 00:51:35.96\00:51:39.63 The first one was in Vol 1, Spiritual Gifts, pg.17 00:51:39.66\00:51:43.97 So we have authority and submission with the angels 00:51:44.00\00:51:46.43 we have it in the Garden of Eden and in fact we have it 00:51:46.47\00:51:50.81 in the Trinity. Now I'm quickly gonna go through the Trinity 00:51:50.84\00:51:53.78 very quick here to show you this is why Paul establishes 00:51:53.81\00:52:00.22 the principle of headship using 1 Cor 11:3, God is the head 00:52:00.25\00:52:06.49 of Christ. And it doesn't just refer to His work to redeem the 00:52:06.52\00:52:12.33 human race in the incarnation. It refers to, because the Bible 00:52:12.36\00:52:17.80 goes on to say that the Son will be subject to the Father 00:52:17.83\00:52:21.60 throughout eternity, 1 Cor 15:28 so throughout eternity the Son 00:52:21.64\00:52:27.64 will be subject to the Father. He was subject to the Father 00:52:27.68\00:52:31.01 during the Incarnation. Was he subject to the Father prior 00:52:31.05\00:52:36.48 to the Incarnation? Yes. We know that Lucifer 00:52:36.52\00:52:41.16 didn't understand the position of the Son of God. 00:52:41.19\00:52:43.79 He thought that Jesus was just another glorious angel 00:52:43.83\00:52:49.63 like himself. But maybe a little bit brighter, perhaps. 00:52:49.66\00:52:54.37 Maybe in charge, but he should be equal and so on. 00:52:54.40\00:52:57.11 Let me read you a few statements here 00:52:57.14\00:52:58.77 concerning incarnation and salvation there is little debate 00:53:02.88\00:53:06.61 that Christ was subject to the Father. We know that from the 00:53:06.65\00:53:11.75 Bible. Jesus said I seek the will of the Father, I always do 00:53:11.79\00:53:14.56 those things that are pleasing to Him. I have kept my Father's 00:53:14.59\00:53:16.69 commandments. So God does the directing and He does the 00:53:16.73\00:53:21.16 sending and the commanding. But we read likewise in eternity 00:53:21.20\00:53:26.97 past the Sovereign of the Universe, by the way the 00:53:27.00\00:53:29.40 Sovereign of the Universe is always the Father. 00:53:29.44\00:53:31.77 The Sovereign of the Universe had an associate, a co-worker 00:53:33.88\00:53:37.05 one in nature. Who was the co- worker? Jesus. 00:53:37.08\00:53:40.12 The Father and the Son relation- ship has always existed. The Son 00:53:40.15\00:53:43.89 was never inaugurated as the Son or the Word. He has always 00:53:43.92\00:53:48.96 existed as the Word. Here's Evangelism, pg.16 00:53:48.99\00:53:53.90 The Word existed as a divine being even as the eternal Son of 00:53:53.93\00:53:58.10 God, in union and oneness with the Father. From everlasting He 00:53:58.13\00:54:01.57 was the mediator of the everlasting covenant. 00:54:01.60\00:54:03.61 The Word, the Son of God, the Mediator from everlasting. 00:54:03.64\00:54:09.24 Everlasting means eternity. This would suggest that from eternity 00:54:09.28\00:54:14.75 the Son has been subject to the Father. However, we don't have 00:54:14.78\00:54:20.62 an explicit statement to that effect but we know for certain 00:54:20.66\00:54:24.36 that even in heaven before creation Lucifer understood 00:54:24.39\00:54:28.00 the Son being inferior in terms of role to the Father. 00:54:28.03\00:54:33.50 Patriarchs and Prophets, pg.38 00:54:41.51\00:54:44.18 So there you see the confusion of Satan. 00:54:57.83\00:54:59.89 Volume 1 of the Spirit of Prophecy, the Son should be 00:55:03.43\00:55:07.40 equal with Himself. The Father made known that it was ordained 00:55:07.44\00:55:09.90 by Himself that Christ His Son should be equal with Himself. 00:55:09.94\00:55:12.67 His Son He had invested with authority to command the 00:55:12.71\00:55:17.45 heavenly host. Who invested the authority? The Father. 00:55:17.48\00:55:23.25 And the Son received it, second in command. And endowing the Son 00:55:23.28\00:55:28.76 with unlimited power. Then the Son received permission to step 00:55:28.79\00:55:33.19 down from heaven. Early Writings pg.126. The Son pleaded with the 00:55:33.23\00:55:38.43 Father and He finally obtained permission from the Father 00:55:38.47\00:55:41.64 to give His own life as a ransom for the race. 00:55:41.67\00:55:44.81 So we see the Son being submissive to the Father 00:55:46.37\00:55:49.04 prior to creation, during His incarnation and He will be 00:55:49.08\00:55:57.52 throughout eternity. So we have the headship principle in the 00:55:57.55\00:56:04.13 Trinity. Christ is seated at the right hand of the Father 00:56:04.16\00:56:09.53 that will be throughout eternity let me finish this up because 00:56:09.56\00:56:11.83 I'm running out of time. The Son of God was next in authority 00:56:11.87\00:56:16.64 to the great Law-giver, Vol 2 Spirit of Prophecy, pg.9 00:56:16.67\00:56:21.04 The Son was second in authority to the great Law-giver 00:56:21.08\00:56:24.25 the Holy Spirit is subject to the Son. The Son appointed the 00:56:26.75\00:56:30.59 Holy Spirit to be His represent- ative here on this earth. 00:56:30.62\00:56:33.69 I'm afraid I'm running out of time. I don't have time to go 00:56:36.49\00:56:39.39 through all the rest of this but let me just state to conclude 00:56:39.43\00:56:42.56 The image of God includes autological equality in terms of 00:56:42.60\00:56:48.77 nature and being but headship and submission in terms of 00:56:48.80\00:56:52.87 their functional roles with one another. They were created 00:56:52.91\00:56:56.81 He created them male and female in the image of God 00:56:56.85\00:56:59.45 which implies that they were created with functional roles 00:56:59.48\00:57:02.45 for differentiation. Human beings were a new and distinct 00:57:02.48\00:57:05.92 order. They were made in the image of God. 00:57:05.95\00:57:08.42 And the whole purpose of the plan of redemption is to restore 00:57:08.46\00:57:12.93 the image of God in man. And He intends to do that in the church 00:57:12.96\00:57:19.07 as well. The image of God not only includes character 00:57:19.10\00:57:24.91 but it also includes husband and wife, the relationship in the 00:57:24.94\00:57:29.74 home and the relationship in the church. May God bless 00:57:29.78\00:57:34.78 the 2015 General Conference Session. 00:57:34.82\00:57:38.19
