Let us pray. 00:00:15.83\00:00:18.34 Once again, Father, we come into Your presence, 00:00:18.37\00:00:21.35 realizing that our ways are not Your ways, 00:00:21.38\00:00:25.55 realizing that our knowledge and wisdom is limited. 00:00:25.58\00:00:30.42 And therefore we come before You asking for Your wisdom. 00:00:30.45\00:00:35.18 That we might be able to understand, 00:00:35.21\00:00:37.32 what we're going to study? 00:00:37.35\00:00:39.62 And we me might be able comprehend, 00:00:39.65\00:00:41.63 how important it is in this stage 00:00:41.66\00:00:44.56 of the history of the Adventist church? 00:00:44.59\00:00:47.66 We ask Father, that You will be with us 00:00:47.69\00:00:50.30 through the ministration of Your holy angels. 00:00:50.33\00:00:52.94 You will give us clarity of thought 00:00:52.97\00:00:55.40 and you will give us tender hearts. 00:00:55.43\00:00:57.87 And we thank You for the promise of Your presence 00:00:57.90\00:01:00.62 because we ask it in the name of Jesus', amen. 00:01:00.65\00:01:04.28 The Bible provides an impressive list of prominent women 00:01:06.71\00:01:13.07 who played a significant role in the plan of salvation. 00:01:13.10\00:01:19.08 The Old Testament has an entire on a row of woman, 00:01:19.11\00:01:23.53 who were instrumental in bringing about things 00:01:23.56\00:01:27.82 that would lead to the coming of the Messiah to the world. 00:01:27.85\00:01:31.76 We think for example of Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, 00:01:31.79\00:01:36.65 Jacobi, Miriam, Ruth, Esther, Hannah, 00:01:36.68\00:01:42.43 Deborah, Huldah among others. 00:01:42.46\00:01:46.82 The New Testament is no exception. 00:01:46.85\00:01:49.68 There are numerable women in the New Testament 00:01:49.71\00:01:53.66 who also were instrumental in proclaiming the plan 00:01:53.69\00:01:58.15 of salvation and also preparing the world 00:01:58.18\00:02:01.31 for the arrival of the Messiah. 00:02:01.34\00:02:03.55 We think for example of Mary, the mother of Jesus. 00:02:03.58\00:02:07.60 Anna, Elizabeth, Mary and Martha the sisters of Lazarus. 00:02:07.63\00:02:12.93 Joanna, Salome, Dorcas, Lydia, Priscilla, Domorus, Phoebe. 00:02:12.96\00:02:20.39 The four daughters of Philips, Lois, Junias 00:02:20.42\00:02:23.52 and many, many others that are mentioned in the New Testament. 00:02:23.55\00:02:27.55 Women who played an important roles in the early church. 00:02:27.58\00:02:32.40 Who would dare say that scripture has nothing to say 00:02:32.43\00:02:38.22 about the role and importance of women 00:02:38.25\00:02:41.77 in the plan of salvation 00:02:41.80\00:02:43.25 and in the proclamation of the gospel? 00:02:43.28\00:02:46.37 The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia 00:02:46.40\00:02:50.13 contains what I consider to be a must read article. 00:02:50.16\00:02:54.42 It's the article that bares the title Woman, 00:02:54.45\00:02:58.85 where a contrast is drawn between 00:02:58.88\00:03:01.68 the biblical concept of woman and the concept of woman 00:03:01.71\00:03:05.77 that was held in the countries 00:03:05.80\00:03:08.39 of the Middle East in biblical times. 00:03:08.42\00:03:11.31 I like to read a paragraph from this very good encyclopedia, 00:03:11.34\00:03:16.27 the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia 00:03:16.30\00:03:19.57 where it speaks about the relationship between 00:03:19.60\00:03:22.46 the Hebrew concept of woman and the concept of woman 00:03:22.49\00:03:25.42 that was held by the surrounding nations. 00:03:25.45\00:03:28.45 This is how it reads. 00:03:28.48\00:03:30.22 "Under the Hebrew system the position of woman 00:03:30.25\00:03:35.00 was in marked contrast with her status 00:03:35.03\00:03:38.75 in surrounding heathen nations. 00:03:38.78\00:03:41.64 Her liberties were greater, 00:03:41.67\00:03:44.52 her employments more varied and important, 00:03:44.55\00:03:48.57 her social standing more respectful and commanding. 00:03:48.60\00:03:53.14 The divine law given on Sinai required children to honor 00:03:53.17\00:03:58.53 the mother equally with the father. 00:03:58.56\00:04:02.01 A similar esteem was accorded her in patriarchal times. 00:04:02.04\00:04:07.36 The ancient Hebrews never entirely lost 00:04:07.39\00:04:11.19 the light of their original revelation, 00:04:11.22\00:04:14.33 and, more than any other oriental race, 00:04:14.36\00:04:18.39 they held woman in high esteem, honor and affection." 00:04:18.42\00:04:24.60 Unfortunately in the times of Christ, 00:04:24.63\00:04:29.22 the Jews had been impacted and influenced 00:04:29.25\00:04:33.47 by the views of woman that were held by the surrounding nations. 00:04:33.50\00:04:38.56 The same encyclopedia states this about the concept 00:04:38.59\00:04:42.59 that was held by the Rabbis in the days of Christ. 00:04:42.62\00:04:46.93 "Under pagan culture and heathen darkness 00:04:46.96\00:04:51.41 woman was universally subject 00:04:51.44\00:04:54.47 to inferior and degrading conditions. 00:04:54.50\00:04:58.15 Every decline in her status in the Hebrew commonwealth 00:04:58.18\00:05:03.36 was due to the incursion of foreign influence." 00:05:03.39\00:05:08.78 You know, when you look for example 00:05:08.81\00:05:10.26 at the Sabbath in the gospels. 00:05:10.29\00:05:12.78 The Rabbinical Sabbath is not the biblical Sabbath. 00:05:12.81\00:05:17.21 And so the view that the Rabbis had of woman 00:05:17.24\00:05:20.65 was not the biblical view of woman. 00:05:20.68\00:05:23.70 The view of woman had been distorted in the days of Christ. 00:05:23.73\00:05:28.93 It was not the view that was upheld by scripture. 00:05:28.96\00:05:33.85 Now, we must ask the question. 00:05:33.88\00:05:36.43 Did God delegate to Adam at creation 00:05:36.46\00:05:41.54 the headship or leadership role in the marriage relationship? 00:05:41.57\00:05:47.37 Or was this headship or leadership role given to Adam 00:05:47.40\00:05:51.78 only after the fall of Adam and Eve into sin? 00:05:51.81\00:05:58.02 And a related question? 00:05:58.05\00:06:00.52 Did the headship or the leadership of Adam 00:06:00.55\00:06:04.81 and Man come to an end when Jesus died on the cross? 00:06:04.84\00:06:11.01 So we're going to attempt to answer 00:06:11.04\00:06:13.96 these very important questions. 00:06:13.99\00:06:16.34 Was Adam given the headship and leadership role before sin? 00:06:16.37\00:06:21.30 And after sin, did this headship or leadership role continue 00:06:21.33\00:06:28.20 or did it end at the cross when Jesus died? 00:06:28.23\00:06:33.26 Now, there is no doubt whatsoever. 00:06:33.29\00:06:35.53 When we examine the biblical testimony 00:06:35.56\00:06:38.34 that there is strong evidence that Adam and Eve 00:06:38.37\00:06:42.66 were created equal in status. 00:06:42.69\00:06:46.73 But it is also equally clear in the Bible 00:06:46.76\00:06:49.44 and in the Spirit of Prophecy that God gave Adam 00:06:49.47\00:06:53.44 the headship or the leadership role 00:06:53.47\00:06:56.38 in the marriage relationship. 00:06:56.41\00:06:58.76 Now once again I would like to read a statement that we find 00:06:58.79\00:07:01.87 in the International Bible Encyclopedia 00:07:01.90\00:07:04.99 where it speaks about how man could be equal 00:07:05.02\00:07:10.72 and man and woman could be equal 00:07:10.75\00:07:13.51 and yet fulfill different roles. 00:07:13.54\00:07:16.94 This is what the encyclopedia states. 00:07:16.97\00:07:19.90 "Priority of creation may indicate headship." 00:07:19.93\00:07:25.48 Because of course, Eve came after Adam. 00:07:25.51\00:07:29.43 She came from Adam. 00:07:29.46\00:07:31.17 So the article says "Priority of creation may indicate headship, 00:07:31.20\00:07:35.54 but not as theologians 00:07:35.57\00:07:38.08 have so uniformly affirmed, superiority. 00:07:38.11\00:07:42.46 Dependence indicates difference of function, not inferiority. 00:07:42.49\00:07:49.11 Human values are estimated 00:07:49.14\00:07:51.00 in terms of the mental and spiritual. 00:07:51.03\00:07:54.22 Man and woman are endowed for equality, 00:07:54.25\00:07:58.18 and are mutually interdependent." 00:07:58.21\00:08:01.22 And so what this paragraph is saying is that 00:08:01.25\00:08:05.07 because Adam was prior to Eve, 00:08:05.10\00:08:08.38 he did had the headship role but that does not mean 00:08:08.41\00:08:11.84 that Adam was superior to Eve. 00:08:11.87\00:08:15.43 They were equal but they had different functions. 00:08:15.46\00:08:20.26 Now the Book of Genesis makes it very, very clear 00:08:20.29\00:08:23.62 that Adam and Eve were created equal in status 00:08:23.65\00:08:28.14 and in value before God. 00:08:28.17\00:08:30.67 Both of them were told in scripture 00:08:30.70\00:08:33.44 were created in the image of God. 00:08:33.47\00:08:36.27 Both of them were blessed by the Creator. 00:08:36.30\00:08:39.86 Both of them were given the command 00:08:39.89\00:08:41.83 to be fruitful and to multiply. 00:08:41.86\00:08:44.73 To both of them was given dominion. 00:08:44.76\00:08:48.36 And both of them are described with the generic word 'Man.' 00:08:48.39\00:08:53.93 Ellen White in Patriarchs and Prophets, page 47 00:08:53.96\00:08:58.09 makes it very clear 00:08:58.12\00:09:00.02 that Adam and Eve were created equal. 00:09:00.05\00:09:03.51 This is what she states. 00:09:03.54\00:09:05.72 "Eve was created from a rib taken from the side of Adam, 00:09:05.75\00:09:10.46 signifying that she was not to control him as the head, 00:09:10.49\00:09:15.03 nor to be trampled under his feet as an inferior, 00:09:15.06\00:09:19.48 but to stand by his side as an equal, 00:09:19.51\00:09:23.73 to be loved and protected by him." 00:09:23.76\00:09:27.92 So there is no doubt whatsoever that Adam and Eve 00:09:27.95\00:09:30.38 were created ontologically equal but the question is. 00:09:30.41\00:09:34.87 Does this mean that they had identical 00:09:34.90\00:09:37.68 or indistinguishable roles within that equality? 00:09:37.71\00:09:43.57 Where they created the same? 00:09:43.60\00:09:45.82 Or where they created different to fulfill different roles? 00:09:45.85\00:09:50.79 There is no doubt whatsoever 00:09:50.82\00:09:52.06 that the man was created to be the father. 00:09:52.09\00:09:55.15 And the woman was created to be the mother. 00:09:55.18\00:09:58.66 Both of them were created with 00:09:58.69\00:10:00.55 different physiological and psychological makeup. 00:10:00.58\00:10:04.49 Each to fulfill the role for which God created them. 00:10:04.52\00:10:10.09 Does a difference in roles mean 00:10:10.12\00:10:12.51 that the woman was inferior to the man? 00:10:12.54\00:10:15.03 Absolutely not. 00:10:15.06\00:10:16.56 A distinction in roles 00:10:16.59\00:10:18.67 does not imply superiority or inferiority. 00:10:18.70\00:10:24.17 The women's ordination lobby today 00:10:24.20\00:10:26.61 which is very, very powerful 00:10:26.64\00:10:28.98 and puts a lot of pressure on churches and on society 00:10:29.01\00:10:33.03 has given the impression 00:10:33.06\00:10:34.80 that female's submission to man within marriage is a bad thing. 00:10:34.83\00:10:42.48 That subjection of wives to their husbands gives them 00:10:42.51\00:10:46.36 an inferior and a demeaning status. 00:10:46.39\00:10:50.43 The idea seems to be that loving subjection of wives 00:10:50.46\00:10:55.47 to their husbands was instituted after the fall. 00:10:55.50\00:10:59.50 And lasted only until Jesus died at the cross. 00:10:59.53\00:11:03.50 And when Jesus died according to this view, 00:11:03.53\00:11:06.59 woman within marriage were emancipated from subordination 00:11:06.62\00:11:11.99 or subjection to their husbands. 00:11:12.02\00:11:15.14 But the question is this so. 00:11:15.17\00:11:18.71 Was the subjection or the submission of wives 00:11:18.74\00:11:21.93 to their husbands only a temporary arrangement 00:11:21.96\00:11:25.44 that was to last between the fall and the cross? 00:11:25.47\00:11:28.93 Or was this arrangement something 00:11:28.96\00:11:31.45 that God has established before sin 00:11:31.48\00:11:34.88 at the every beginning of human history? 00:11:34.91\00:11:38.48 There is significant evidence in scripture, 00:11:38.51\00:11:41.25 as well as in the Spirit of Prophecy 00:11:41.28\00:11:44.12 that man was given the headship or the leadership role 00:11:44.15\00:11:48.38 before sin and that this arrangement 00:11:48.41\00:11:51.63 was conformed also after sin. 00:11:51.66\00:11:56.27 Now, what I want to do in the next few minutes 00:11:56.30\00:11:59.69 that we have together is to present 00:11:59.72\00:12:02.69 all of the biblical testimony 00:12:02.72\00:12:04.83 that man was created to be the head and the leader 00:12:04.86\00:12:09.20 and the woman was created to be subject 00:12:09.23\00:12:13.62 to the authority of the husband. 00:12:13.65\00:12:16.87 Now I know that in this world that we live in today, 00:12:16.90\00:12:20.10 that sounds just not right because society has said, no, 00:12:20.13\00:12:25.25 you know, nobody is subject to anybody. 00:12:25.28\00:12:27.46 Every person is, does their own thing, 00:12:27.49\00:12:30.03 every person is an individual, 00:12:30.06\00:12:31.94 there is no such thing 00:12:31.97\00:12:33.33 as subjection of wives to husbands. 00:12:33.36\00:12:36.48 But the church does not go by what society dictates. 00:12:36.51\00:12:40.24 The church bases its beliefs and its practices 00:12:40.27\00:12:43.71 upon God's holy word, 00:12:43.74\00:12:45.61 upon the scriptures and upon the writings 00:12:45.64\00:12:48.60 that we have from the Spirit of Prophecy. 00:12:48.63\00:12:51.12 So let's take a look at the biblical evidence 00:12:51.15\00:12:53.99 that man and woman were created equal 00:12:54.02\00:12:57.72 and yet they had different functions 00:12:57.75\00:13:00.39 with the husband being the leader 00:13:00.42\00:13:03.18 and the wife being subject to the authority of the husband. 00:13:03.21\00:13:07.70 The Apostle Paul harkens back to the creation account. 00:13:07.73\00:13:13.14 And he explains that the woman is not allowed 00:13:13.17\00:13:16.75 to exercise authority over the man because as he says, 00:13:16.78\00:13:21.99 "Adam was created first and then Eve." 00:13:22.02\00:13:25.19 I want to read that text, it's found in 1 Timothy 2:12-13. 00:13:25.22\00:13:32.27 This is what the Apostle Paul says. 00:13:32.30\00:13:34.89 "I do not permit a woman to teach 00:13:34.92\00:13:37.70 or to have authority over a man, she must be silent. 00:13:37.73\00:13:42.70 For Adam was formed first, then Eve." 00:13:42.73\00:13:46.81 Now you notice here that Paul's argument 00:13:46.84\00:13:49.51 for the submission of the woman to the man 00:13:49.54\00:13:52.37 is not an issue of culture. 00:13:52.40\00:13:56.02 It's not an issue of something 00:13:56.05\00:13:58.09 that comes about as a result of the fall. 00:13:58.12\00:14:01.32 The Apostle Paul is arguing on the basis of the creation order. 00:14:01.35\00:14:06.29 He is saying, that the woman should be subject to the man. 00:14:06.32\00:14:10.33 And I believe that 00:14:10.36\00:14:11.39 he is especially talking about marriage 00:14:11.42\00:14:13.81 because man was created first and then woman. 00:14:13.84\00:14:18.09 This happened before sin came into the world. 00:14:18.12\00:14:21.65 It's part of God's original plan. 00:14:21.68\00:14:23.78 It transcends culture and it takes place before the fall. 00:14:23.81\00:14:29.10 Another indication that man was to exercise 00:14:29.13\00:14:32.65 the leadership or headship role 00:14:32.68\00:14:34.88 and the wife was to be subject to the authority 00:14:34.91\00:14:38.28 of the husband was the manner of Eve's creation. 00:14:38.31\00:14:43.24 Now we all know according to the Bible 00:14:43.27\00:14:46.49 that Eve was created from man. 00:14:46.52\00:14:51.00 The Apostle Paul picks up on this. 00:14:51.03\00:14:53.15 Notice 1 Corinthians 11:8 where the Apostle Paul argues 00:14:53.18\00:14:58.92 that the woman should be submissive 00:14:58.95\00:15:01.54 to the headship of the man. 00:15:01.57\00:15:03.00 And now I quote, 00:15:03.03\00:15:04.57 "because man did not come from woman 00:15:04.60\00:15:07.07 but woman came from man." 00:15:07.10\00:15:10.32 Notice once again that this has nothing to do with culture, 00:15:10.35\00:15:15.19 it has nothing to do with the fall. 00:15:15.22\00:15:17.07 Because the Apostle Paul is arguing 00:15:17.10\00:15:19.43 on the basis of the creation order 00:15:19.46\00:15:21.83 that took place before sin. 00:15:21.86\00:15:24.38 He says very clearly man did not come from woman 00:15:24.41\00:15:28.16 but woman came from man. 00:15:28.19\00:15:29.80 That took place before sin. 00:15:29.83\00:15:32.26 And so the Apostle Paul is taking what Genesis 2:21 says 00:15:32.29\00:15:36.48 about the manner of Eve's coming into existence. 00:15:36.51\00:15:40.74 And he is saying that shows that the wife or the woman 00:15:40.77\00:15:44.79 should be subject to her husband. 00:15:44.82\00:15:47.50 You see, in the Bible origin and authority 00:15:47.53\00:15:52.24 are very closely related. 00:15:52.27\00:15:54.78 For example, Jesus is preeminent. 00:15:54.81\00:15:58.55 And the reason why He is preeminent 00:15:58.58\00:16:00.37 and above all creation 00:16:00.40\00:16:02.42 is because He is the source of creation. 00:16:02.45\00:16:06.25 For this reason in Colossians 1:15, 00:16:06.28\00:16:09.66 Jesus is called the head of the body. 00:16:09.69\00:16:13.63 Now, let's take another example a child. 00:16:13.66\00:16:17.14 Is a child required to render 00:16:17.17\00:16:20.38 obedience and respect to his parents? 00:16:20.41\00:16:23.54 Absolutely. Why? 00:16:23.57\00:16:25.62 Because the child derived 00:16:25.65\00:16:27.60 his or her existence from the parents. 00:16:27.63\00:16:32.16 And therefore, children should be 00:16:32.19\00:16:34.46 obedience and submissive to their parents. 00:16:34.49\00:16:37.39 Apostle Paul is arguing in the same manner. 00:16:37.42\00:16:40.07 That because the woman came from the man, 00:16:40.10\00:16:42.78 the man is the source of the woman, 00:16:42.81\00:16:45.55 the woman in the marriage relationship 00:16:45.58\00:16:48.13 should be subject to her husband. 00:16:48.16\00:16:51.56 Another indication that man was created to exercise authority 00:16:51.59\00:16:56.07 or the headship role is the fact that the Bible tells us 00:16:56.10\00:17:00.15 that Eve was made to be Adam's helper. 00:17:00.18\00:17:05.35 Now, the Apostle Paul again picks up on the creation order. 00:17:05.38\00:17:09.28 In 1 Corinthians 11:9, the Apostle Paul explains 00:17:09.31\00:17:14.07 what Moses meant when he spoke of Eve 00:17:14.10\00:17:18.55 as being created as a helper for man. 00:17:18.58\00:17:21.51 This is what the Apostle Paul says. 00:17:21.54\00:17:23.63 "Neither was man created for woman, 00:17:23.66\00:17:26.95 but woman was created for man." 00:17:26.98\00:17:30.56 Once again, the Apostle Paul is not arguing 00:17:30.59\00:17:33.69 on the basis of culture. 00:17:33.72\00:17:35.66 He is not arguing about something 00:17:35.69\00:17:38.00 that took place after the fall. 00:17:38.03\00:17:40.28 He is saying that this is part of the creation order. 00:17:40.31\00:17:45.64 Another indication that man was to exercise 00:17:45.67\00:17:49.53 the headship or the leadership role even before sin 00:17:49.56\00:17:54.09 is because the Bible tells us that Adam gave Eve a name. 00:17:54.12\00:17:59.17 Now, in scripture giving names is a sign of authority. 00:17:59.20\00:18:03.42 For example, you remember Nebuchadnezzar gave 00:18:03.45\00:18:06.10 the three Hebrew were these names. 00:18:06.13\00:18:09.51 He was exercising his authority. 00:18:09.54\00:18:12.23 We read in our first presentation 00:18:12.26\00:18:14.82 on this topic that the Father gave Jesus a name, 00:18:14.85\00:18:18.65 that is above every name. 00:18:18.68\00:18:20.10 The Father is exercising His authority 00:18:20.13\00:18:22.81 by giving Jesus a name. 00:18:22.84\00:18:24.49 And of course, Adam exercised his authority by-- 00:18:24.52\00:18:28.36 over the animals by naming the animals. 00:18:28.39\00:18:32.04 Incidentally parents give names to their children. 00:18:32.07\00:18:35.88 This is an exercise of parental authority 00:18:35.91\00:18:39.10 because the children come from their parents. 00:18:39.13\00:18:44.53 So the fact that Adam names Eve is an indication 00:18:44.56\00:18:48.41 that Adam exercised authority or leadership or headship 00:18:48.44\00:18:52.86 and this took place once again before sin. 00:18:52.89\00:18:56.08 It has nothing to do with culture, 00:18:56.11\00:18:58.07 it has nothing to do with God arrangement after the fall. 00:18:58.10\00:19:02.84 "Even the before the creation of woman, 00:19:02.87\00:19:05.85 God commanded Adam not to eat from the tree." 00:19:05.88\00:19:09.83 He did not command Eve not to eat from the tree. 00:19:09.86\00:19:13.28 "There is no indication in the story 00:19:13.31\00:19:15.76 that God give this command to Eve." 00:19:15.79\00:19:18.87 The Genesis story seems to indicate 00:19:18.90\00:19:21.57 that Adam was expected to relay this information 00:19:21.60\00:19:26.06 to Eve, his wife. 00:19:26.09\00:19:27.50 That she was not supposed to eat from the tree. 00:19:27.53\00:19:30.68 One Adventist pro-ordination scholar has suggested 00:19:30.71\00:19:34.46 that the gender-specific requirement 00:19:34.49\00:19:37.52 that elders must be the husbands of one wife, 00:19:37.55\00:19:40.80 does not anymore disqualify woman from being elders. 00:19:40.83\00:19:44.51 Then the tenth Commandment excludes woman from obedience 00:19:44.54\00:19:48.11 because God commanded man not to covet 00:19:48.14\00:19:51.66 and not woman but such an argument is flawed. 00:19:51.69\00:19:55.65 Does the fact that the tenth Commandment 00:19:55.68\00:19:57.77 forbids a man to covet his neighbor's wife 00:19:57.80\00:20:01.26 mean that it is allowable for the wife 00:20:01.29\00:20:04.23 to covet another woman's husband 00:20:04.26\00:20:07.02 because it's not specifically mentioned there. 00:20:07.05\00:20:09.98 The idea is absurd. 00:20:10.01\00:20:12.40 You see, in biblical thought 00:20:12.43\00:20:14.53 when God gives a command to the husband, 00:20:14.56\00:20:17.85 he is expected to teach his entire family 00:20:17.88\00:20:21.48 to obey the commandment. 00:20:21.51\00:20:23.53 For example, God said this about Abraham 00:20:23.56\00:20:26.98 and this is found in Genesis 18:19. 00:20:27.01\00:20:30.50 "For I have known him, 00:20:30.53\00:20:33.06 in order that he may command his children 00:20:33.09\00:20:36.65 and his household after him, 00:20:36.68\00:20:39.77 that they keep the way of the Lord, 00:20:39.80\00:20:42.31 to do righteousness and justice, 00:20:42.34\00:20:44.30 that the Lord may bring to Abraham 00:20:44.33\00:20:46.69 what He has spoken to him." 00:20:46.72\00:20:48.92 Did you notice here that clearly it tells us 00:20:48.95\00:20:52.21 that God expected Abraham to command his children 00:20:52.24\00:20:56.46 and his household after Him? 00:20:56.49\00:20:58.75 God spoke to Abraham and then Abraham relayed 00:20:58.78\00:21:02.33 the information to his family. 00:21:02.36\00:21:05.07 Now, it's interesting to notice that before Adam and Eve sinned, 00:21:05.10\00:21:09.20 Ellen White tells us the following about the Sabbath. 00:21:09.23\00:21:12.51 And I quote. 00:21:12.54\00:21:14.28 "The Sabbath was committed to Adam, 00:21:14.31\00:21:17.82 the father and representative of the whole human family." 00:21:17.85\00:21:22.09 To whom did God commit the Sabbath? 00:21:22.12\00:21:24.70 She says very clearly, 00:21:24.73\00:21:26.06 "The Sabbath was committed to Adam, 00:21:26.09\00:21:28.01 the Father and representative of the whole human family." 00:21:28.04\00:21:31.69 Notice that it doesn't say 00:21:31.72\00:21:32.85 "that God committed the Sabbath to Adam and Eve." 00:21:32.88\00:21:35.52 The father and mother of the human race. 00:21:35.55\00:21:38.47 He committed it to Adam. 00:21:38.50\00:21:40.93 Does this fact mean that because God committed it 00:21:40.96\00:21:43.87 to Adam that Eve was not expected 00:21:43.90\00:21:46.64 to obey the Sabbath commandment. 00:21:46.67\00:21:48.61 To the contrary as the father and the representative 00:21:48.64\00:21:52.81 of the whole human family, 00:21:52.84\00:21:54.63 Adam was expected to teach his wife 00:21:54.66\00:21:58.01 and successive generations the meaning of the Sabbath 00:21:58.04\00:22:01.60 and the importance of its observance. 00:22:01.63\00:22:04.35 So just because the Bible doesn't tell us 00:22:04.38\00:22:08.27 that God commanded Adam and Eve to keep the Sabbath, 00:22:08.30\00:22:12.04 He gives the Sabbath to Adam 00:22:12.07\00:22:13.66 according to the Spirit of Prophecy. 00:22:13.69\00:22:15.72 Doesn't mean that Eve was not required to keep the Sabbath. 00:22:15.75\00:22:19.51 And the same idea applies to the issue of ordination. 00:22:19.54\00:22:24.28 Another argument which the Apostle Paul 00:22:24.31\00:22:26.35 uses is a post-fall argument. 00:22:26.38\00:22:28.54 You see, after the fall the arrangement 00:22:28.57\00:22:31.47 was still that the wife should be subject to her husband. 00:22:31.50\00:22:35.59 Now the Apostle Paul not only gives pre-fall reasons 00:22:35.62\00:22:38.65 for this but he also gives post-fall reasons. 00:22:38.68\00:22:41.70 Now notice what he had to say in 1 Timothy 2:14-15. 00:22:41.73\00:22:49.70 Here he says, "That he does not allow the woman 00:22:49.73\00:22:53.87 to exercise authority over the man, 00:22:53.90\00:22:56.50 for Adam was formed first then Eve." 00:22:56.53\00:22:59.98 And then he explains this. 00:23:00.01\00:23:01.97 "And Adam was not deceived, 00:23:02.00\00:23:04.87 but the woman being deceived fell into transgression." 00:23:04.90\00:23:09.37 So the Apostle Paul is now giving 00:23:09.40\00:23:11.27 an additional post-fall reason, 00:23:11.30\00:23:13.47 why woman do not exercise authority over a man? 00:23:13.50\00:23:18.10 Because the woman was enticed into sin 00:23:18.13\00:23:21.60 and then she became the temptress of man. 00:23:21.63\00:23:24.62 Samuele Bacchiocchi said something very interesting 00:23:24.65\00:23:28.99 about this idea of the woman being the one 00:23:29.02\00:23:33.47 who brought sin into the world. 00:23:33.50\00:23:35.76 I would like to read this, it's found in Prove All Things 00:23:35.79\00:23:40.10 which is a book that deals with issues 00:23:40.13\00:23:42.12 relating to women's ordination, pages 83 and 84. 00:23:42.15\00:23:46.31 Notice here what he says? 00:23:46.34\00:23:48.67 "Adam willingly let his wife take the lead. 00:23:48.70\00:23:54.12 She usurped Adam's headship and instead of being his helper 00:23:54.15\00:23:59.94 to live as God intended she led him into sin. 00:23:59.97\00:24:04.53 Adam failed to exercise his spiritual leadership 00:24:04.56\00:24:08.50 by protecting Eve from the serpent's deception, 00:24:08.53\00:24:12.22 and, on her part, Eve failed to respect her submissive role 00:24:12.25\00:24:18.25 by standing by her husband side. 00:24:18.28\00:24:21.15 The great fault of Adam in the Fall 00:24:21.18\00:24:23.94 was his failure to exercise his role of spiritual leadership. 00:24:23.97\00:24:28.68 Instead of leading his wife into obedience to God's command, 00:24:28.71\00:24:33.03 he allowed his wife to lead him into disobedience." 00:24:33.06\00:24:37.96 Isn't that a remarkable statement? 00:24:37.99\00:24:40.20 In other words he was supposed to lead his wife into obedience. 00:24:40.23\00:24:43.97 And he relinquished his role as the head and the leader 00:24:44.00\00:24:47.41 and he listened to her voice and thus fell into sin. 00:24:47.44\00:24:52.57 Now it's interesting to notice 00:24:52.60\00:24:54.02 also that after Adam and Eve sinned, 00:24:54.05\00:24:56.79 God required an accounting from Adam 00:24:56.82\00:25:01.08 before he required an accounting from Eve. 00:25:01.11\00:25:04.53 You would expect God to hold Eve accountable 00:25:04.56\00:25:07.29 because she sinned first but it was not so. 00:25:07.32\00:25:10.31 Noteworthy is that fact that God said to Adam 00:25:10.34\00:25:14.36 and now I read from Genesis 3:16. 00:25:14.39\00:25:16.94 Listen carefully. 00:25:16.97\00:25:18.08 He is saying to Adam, 00:25:18.11\00:25:19.14 "Because you have heeded the voice of your wife 00:25:19.17\00:25:22.41 and have eaten from the tree of which 00:25:22.44\00:25:24.47 I commanded you saying, 'You shall not eat of it.'" 00:25:24.50\00:25:28.12 Are you catching the nuance of this verse? 00:25:28.15\00:25:30.49 God is saying to Adam, you heard the voice of your wife. 00:25:30.52\00:25:33.99 When you should have made sure 00:25:34.02\00:25:35.57 that your wife heard your voice. 00:25:35.60\00:25:38.14 So in other words you listen to her command 00:25:38.17\00:25:42.14 instead of listening to My command 00:25:42.17\00:25:44.80 and relaying that command to her. 00:25:44.83\00:25:48.39 The insinuation seems to be that Adam should have obeyed God 00:25:48.42\00:25:52.81 and Eve should in turn have followed 00:25:52.84\00:25:55.26 the voice of her husband. 00:25:55.29\00:25:56.95 Instead Adam relinquished his leadership role to his wife 00:25:56.98\00:26:02.21 by obeying her voice, which led him into transgression. 00:26:02.24\00:26:07.43 Now this idea is further bolstered 00:26:07.46\00:26:10.98 by God's words to Eve after her transgression. 00:26:11.01\00:26:14.00 Now, after Eve transgressed, this is what God said to Eve. 00:26:14.03\00:26:18.64 This is in Genesis 3:16 it says, 00:26:18.67\00:26:24.42 "Your desire shall be for your husband. 00:26:24.45\00:26:28.03 And he shall rule over you." 00:26:28.06\00:26:31.38 Now the question that I would like to ask 00:26:31.41\00:26:33.02 about this statement that God gave to Eve 00:26:33.05\00:26:38.40 is whether this arrangement was a reconfirmation 00:26:38.43\00:26:42.20 of a reality that existed before sin 00:26:42.23\00:26:45.31 or whether this was a divine sentence pronounced by God 00:26:45.34\00:26:48.88 upon the woman after sin? 00:26:48.91\00:26:51.53 In other words, was it a reconfirmation 00:26:51.56\00:26:53.42 of an arrangement that existed before 00:26:53.45\00:26:55.48 or was it a pronouncement of a divine sentence 00:26:55.51\00:26:59.10 something negative pronounced 00:26:59.13\00:27:01.04 upon Eve after the transgression? 00:27:01.07\00:27:04.05 In other words, was this a less than ideal arrangement 00:27:04.08\00:27:07.98 than what existed before sin? 00:27:08.01\00:27:11.92 I believe the answer to this question 00:27:11.95\00:27:13.85 is found in another verse that we find in Genesis 4:7. 00:27:13.88\00:27:19.43 In Genesis 4:7 the same two words are used 00:27:19.46\00:27:23.26 that we found in Genesis 3:16. 00:27:23.29\00:27:26.10 One is the word desire and the other is the word rule. 00:27:26.13\00:27:31.12 Once again Genesis 3:16 says, 00:27:31.15\00:27:33.47 "Your desire shall be for your husband 00:27:33.50\00:27:36.99 and he shall rule over you." 00:27:37.02\00:27:40.37 Now all Bible versions that I consulted on Genesis 4:7. 00:27:40.40\00:27:46.10 And I'm going to read from the NIV as an example. 00:27:46.13\00:27:49.80 Presents the idea that sin is like an animal 00:27:49.83\00:27:54.12 that is crouching and ready to attack. 00:27:54.15\00:27:57.55 In other words the idea is that sin is wants to attacks you, 00:27:57.58\00:28:02.53 sins desire for you. 00:28:02.56\00:28:04.33 But you should rule over sin. 00:28:04.36\00:28:06.73 Listen to the way that the NIV presents this. 00:28:06.76\00:28:09.73 It's our God is hear speaking to Cain. 00:28:09.76\00:28:13.38 "If you that, that is Cain do what is right, 00:28:13.41\00:28:16.74 will you not be accepted? 00:28:16.77\00:28:18.84 But if you do not do what is right, 00:28:18.87\00:28:21.64 sin is crouching at your door. 00:28:21.67\00:28:25.00 It desires to have you, but you must master it." 00:28:25.03\00:28:29.98 Are you seeing what God-- According to this translation 00:28:30.01\00:28:32.79 what God is saying to Cain? 00:28:32.82\00:28:34.78 What God is saying to Cain is, sin has the desire to catch you, 00:28:34.81\00:28:39.78 but you should rule over sin. 00:28:39.81\00:28:42.29 In other words the NIV as well as other version 00:28:42.32\00:28:45.44 actually personify sin as a crouching animal, 00:28:45.47\00:28:49.13 desiring to dominate Cain. 00:28:49.16\00:28:51.11 But Cain is instructed to rule over sin. 00:28:51.14\00:28:55.19 Now Ellen White begs to differ in this interpretation. 00:28:55.22\00:29:00.48 Her explanation is more contextual 00:29:00.51\00:29:03.52 and makes more sense than what all of the translations provide. 00:29:03.55\00:29:09.65 I like to read Ellen White's comment on this. 00:29:09.68\00:29:13.15 It's found in Bible Echo, April 8, 1912. 00:29:13.18\00:29:18.46 It's interesting how Ellen White not always went along 00:29:18.49\00:29:21.99 with the translations and the commentators. 00:29:22.02\00:29:24.40 Sometimes she presented things that were unique. 00:29:24.43\00:29:27.31 Now listen to the explanation that she gives. 00:29:27.34\00:29:31.05 "Abel's offering has been accepted 00:29:31.08\00:29:34.09 but this was because he had done in particular 00:29:34.12\00:29:37.58 as God required him to do. 00:29:37.61\00:29:40.27 If Cain would correct his error, 00:29:40.30\00:29:43.61 he would not be deprived of his birthright. 00:29:43.64\00:29:47.43 Abel, listen carefully, 00:29:47.46\00:29:49.50 Abel would not only love him as his brother, 00:29:49.53\00:29:54.47 but as the younger, would be subject to him." Interesting. 00:29:54.50\00:30:00.69 Once again, "Abel would not only love him as his brother." 00:30:00.72\00:30:05.06 In other words, his desire would be for his brother. 00:30:05.09\00:30:08.43 "But as the younger he would be subject to him." 00:30:08.46\00:30:12.66 Now, you might be wondering whether Ellen White 00:30:12.69\00:30:14.71 is commenting on Genesis 4:7. 00:30:14.74\00:30:16.93 She finishes the quotation by saying, 00:30:16.96\00:30:18.90 "Thus the Lord declared to Cain, 00:30:18.93\00:30:21.83 "Unto thee shall be his desire, that is Abel's desire, 00:30:21.86\00:30:26.61 and thou shalt rule over him, 00:30:26.64\00:30:28.87 that is over Abel because you are older." 00:30:28.90\00:30:32.51 Are you understanding me? 00:30:32.54\00:30:34.09 And so you have this same idea that the reason 00:30:34.12\00:30:37.68 why the man was to exercise leadership or authority 00:30:37.71\00:30:41.96 over the woman was because 00:30:41.99\00:30:43.40 the woman was younger than the man. 00:30:43.43\00:30:46.32 Now you find here that after sin you have the same arrangement. 00:30:46.35\00:30:50.65 God is saying in other words to Cain listen. 00:30:50.68\00:30:53.88 If you do what is right, 00:30:53.91\00:30:57.08 Abel's desire is going to be for you. 00:30:57.11\00:30:59.30 His love is going to be for you. 00:30:59.33\00:31:01.11 And he is going to allow you to rule over him 00:31:01.14\00:31:04.29 because you are older and he is what? 00:31:04.32\00:31:07.50 And he is younger. 00:31:07.53\00:31:09.77 What a beautiful explanation of the text. 00:31:09.80\00:31:13.14 By the way as I mentioned before 00:31:13.17\00:31:14.81 this lends support to Paul's statement 00:31:14.84\00:31:18.35 that before the fall Adam was to rule over his wife 00:31:18.38\00:31:22.31 because he was created first and then Eve. 00:31:22.34\00:31:26.38 In other words, he was older and she was younger. 00:31:26.41\00:31:29.71 On the other hand Eve was to lovingly submit to her husband 00:31:29.74\00:31:34.12 because he was older and she was younger. 00:31:34.15\00:31:36.96 Thus the older, younger issue comes into view 00:31:36.99\00:31:40.50 both before and after sin. 00:31:40.53\00:31:43.30 And provides one rational for female submission. 00:31:43.33\00:31:48.80 Notably, this story of Cain and Abel 00:31:48.83\00:31:51.82 transpired long before the patriarchal period. 00:31:51.85\00:31:55.47 Because some people argue, some scholars say, 00:31:55.50\00:31:57.74 well, you know, in the time of the patriarchs 00:31:57.77\00:31:59.90 you have the wife subjective to the husband 00:31:59.93\00:32:01.79 but we don't live in patriarchal times anymore. 00:32:01.82\00:32:04.18 But you have this idea already in prepatriarchal times, 00:32:04.21\00:32:07.88 in early human history. 00:32:07.91\00:32:10.38 So this story transpired long before the patriarchal period. 00:32:10.41\00:32:14.69 Since, the very beginning of history 00:32:14.72\00:32:16.83 the younger son was to be ruled by the older son. 00:32:16.86\00:32:20.55 And Adam, who was created first 00:32:20.58\00:32:22.83 was to rule over his wife, who was created second. 00:32:22.86\00:32:26.67 As stated before, this does not mean 00:32:26.70\00:32:29.36 that the woman was ontologically inferior to man. 00:32:29.39\00:32:33.43 Just as Abel was not ontologically inferior to Cain. 00:32:33.46\00:32:37.86 Was Abel inferior to Cain? 00:32:37.89\00:32:40.08 Was he equal to Cain in status? 00:32:40.11\00:32:42.31 Was he equal as a child of God? 00:32:42.34\00:32:44.68 Was he equal in value? 00:32:44.71\00:32:46.18 Of course, he was, but he owed respect to Cain 00:32:46.21\00:32:50.24 because Cain was his older brother. 00:32:50.27\00:32:53.48 That is if Cain did what was right. 00:32:53.51\00:32:56.56 Another evidence that man was to exercise authority 00:32:56.59\00:33:00.73 over a woman specifically in marriage 00:33:00.76\00:33:03.52 is because even after sin Adam once again named his wife. 00:33:03.55\00:33:09.49 In Genesis 3:20 we find this statement. 00:33:09.52\00:33:13.91 "Adam named his wife Eve, 00:33:13.94\00:33:17.21 because she would become the mother of all living." 00:33:17.24\00:33:22.02 So once again you have man naming the woman before sin 00:33:22.05\00:33:26.11 and you have man naming Eve 00:33:26.14\00:33:29.14 after the entrance of sin as well. 00:33:29.17\00:33:32.91 Another evidence that man was to exercise 00:33:32.94\00:33:36.71 the headship role is found in 1 Corinthians 11:3, 00:33:36.74\00:33:42.95 where the Apostle Paul says clearly. 00:33:42.98\00:33:45.39 "God is the head of Christ, Christ is the head of man 00:33:45.42\00:33:50.24 and the man is the head of the woman." 00:33:50.27\00:33:53.13 Now, how could a text be clearer than this one? 00:33:53.16\00:33:56.61 Once again, God is the head Christ. 00:33:56.64\00:33:59.23 Does Christ have a problem with that? 00:33:59.26\00:34:01.55 No. And then it says, Christ is the head of the man. 00:34:01.58\00:34:05.75 Should the man have any problem with that? 00:34:05.78\00:34:08.26 No. The man is the head of woman. 00:34:08.29\00:34:11.09 Should the woman have any problem with that? 00:34:11.12\00:34:13.30 No. Probably, a better translation would be, 00:34:13.33\00:34:17.27 that the husband is the head of the wife 00:34:17.30\00:34:19.90 because it's referring primarily to the marriage relationship. 00:34:19.93\00:34:24.40 Now you notice that the Apostle Paul doesn't say here 00:34:24.43\00:34:27.32 that man was the head of the woman 00:34:27.35\00:34:30.50 until Jesus died on the cross. 00:34:30.53\00:34:32.52 This is being written long after the cross. 00:34:32.55\00:34:34.96 And Paul is saying here that man is the head of the woman 00:34:34.99\00:34:39.91 when he wrote the book of 1 Corinthians. 00:34:39.94\00:34:43.91 Now some women's ordination lobbyist 00:34:43.94\00:34:46.37 and I never ceased to be amazed at how those 00:34:46.40\00:34:48.70 who are in favor of women's ordinations 00:34:48.73\00:34:50.72 will twist the scriptures and meanings of words 00:34:50.75\00:34:54.03 to square with their belief. 00:34:54.06\00:34:56.55 Some women's ordination lobbyist 00:34:56.58\00:34:58.80 have attempted to soften or even eliminate the idea 00:34:58.83\00:35:03.42 that the husband is the head of the wife. 00:35:03.45\00:35:05.82 By arguing that the word head doesn't really mean head, 00:35:05.85\00:35:09.40 it means source or origin. 00:35:09.43\00:35:12.60 Let me give an example. Perhaps some extreme example. 00:35:12.63\00:35:15.35 But it shows how the scriptures many times 00:35:15.38\00:35:18.29 are twisted to fit a preconceived motion. 00:35:18.32\00:35:21.59 Somebody sent me paper that was written by a seminary student 00:35:21.62\00:35:25.29 and this seminary student said 00:35:25.32\00:35:26.89 the word head doesn't mean head, it means completion. 00:35:26.92\00:35:30.95 And this is how she explained the meaning of the word head. 00:35:30.98\00:35:35.58 And I'm reading where it says, 00:35:35.61\00:35:38.02 that the man is the head of the woman, 00:35:38.05\00:35:40.85 from the writings of the Apostle Paul. 00:35:40.88\00:35:42.94 She says, "As Christ is the enabler, 00:35:42.97\00:35:47.40 (the one who brings the completion), 00:35:47.43\00:35:49.23 she puts in parenthesis of the church. 00:35:49.26\00:35:52.05 So the husband is to enable that is to bring to completion 00:35:52.08\00:35:56.39 all that his wife is meant to be." 00:35:56.42\00:36:00.34 Now the interesting thing is, 00:36:00.37\00:36:01.51 this is very novel private interpretation. 00:36:01.54\00:36:04.45 It's what people call eisegesis. 00:36:04.48\00:36:07.20 It's reading into the text what is not there. 00:36:07.23\00:36:10.53 The fact is the Bible tells us that the woman 00:36:10.56\00:36:13.06 was created to enable the man, 00:36:13.09\00:36:15.18 not the man to enable the woman. 00:36:15.21\00:36:18.25 By the way, not a single Bible version translates it that way. 00:36:18.28\00:36:22.27 And not a single lexicon that I consulted 00:36:22.30\00:36:25.42 which is a dictionary has any inkling 00:36:25.45\00:36:29.83 that this means completion or it means to enable. 00:36:29.86\00:36:33.08 It is a private interpretation. 00:36:33.11\00:36:36.00 Incidentally, in all other texts where the Apostle Paul 00:36:36.03\00:36:39.44 uses the word head which is the Greek word Kephale, 00:36:39.47\00:36:42.79 it means authority or it means headship. 00:36:42.82\00:36:46.64 You can check for example, Ephesians 1:22, 00:36:46.67\00:36:49.85 Ephesians 5;23-24, Galatians 118 also 2:10, 00:36:49.88\00:36:55.94 1 Peter 2:7 and there are other texts 00:36:55.97\00:36:58.71 that clearly show that the word head means exactly that, head. 00:36:58.74\00:37:04.18 Once again I say that Bible words 00:37:04.21\00:37:06.42 should not be treated like Play-Doh 00:37:06.45\00:37:09.09 that could be molded to take the shape 00:37:09.12\00:37:11.81 that the interpreter wishes them to have. 00:37:11.84\00:37:14.70 Now interestingly enough the Apostle Paul 00:37:14.73\00:37:17.39 sometimes uses the word head or kephale 00:37:17.42\00:37:20.66 with another Greek word which is the Greek word hupostasso 00:37:20.69\00:37:24.60 which is translated submit. 00:37:24.63\00:37:26.59 Head and submit are used very frequently 00:37:26.62\00:37:29.19 by Paul together in passages. 00:37:29.22\00:37:32.19 Let me give you one example. 00:37:32.22\00:37:34.37 Ephesians 5:22-24, 00:37:34.40\00:37:38.41 Ephesians 5:22-24. 00:37:38.44\00:37:41.87 "Wives submit, that's the word hupostasso 00:37:41.90\00:37:46.82 to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 00:37:46.85\00:37:50.28 For the husband is the head of the wife." 00:37:50.31\00:37:52.68 That's the word kephale, is the head of the wife, 00:37:52.71\00:37:55.80 a also Christ is the head or the kephale of the church, 00:37:55.83\00:38:00.30 and He is the Savior of the body. 00:38:00.33\00:38:02.92 Therefore, just as the church is subject, 00:38:02.95\00:38:05.48 that's the same word hupotosso to Christ, 00:38:05.51\00:38:08.84 so let the wise be subject, hupotosso 00:38:08.87\00:38:12.16 to their own husbands in everything." 00:38:12.19\00:38:15.52 Now I looked up the meaning of the word hupostasso 00:38:15.55\00:38:18.31 which is the word submit in Greek lexicons. 00:38:18.34\00:38:21.78 And this is the definition. 00:38:21.81\00:38:23.51 It means to be subject, to subordinate or to put under. 00:38:23.54\00:38:29.65 The Jewish Bible commentary makes a good point 00:38:29.68\00:38:33.67 and I'd like to read what the Jewish Bible commentary says. 00:38:33.70\00:38:37.84 "If Jesus does not find 00:38:37.87\00:38:39.78 the headship of the father demeaning 00:38:39.81\00:38:42.46 and if the man does not consider the headship of Jesus demeaning, 00:38:42.49\00:38:46.95 then wives should not find the headships 00:38:46.98\00:38:49.58 of their husbands demeaning either." 00:38:49.61\00:38:53.14 The fundamental problem folks is that in this sinful world, 00:38:53.17\00:38:57.56 we consider subjection as a negative thing. 00:38:57.59\00:39:01.40 We consider that those who submit or subject themselves 00:39:01.43\00:39:04.61 to the authority of another are inferior. 00:39:04.64\00:39:08.97 If this were the case as we mentioned in our first study, 00:39:09.00\00:39:13.00 the subjection of Jesus to His Father 00:39:13.03\00:39:15.88 would means that Jesus is inferior to His Father. 00:39:15.91\00:39:19.74 But we're told in scripture 00:39:19.77\00:39:21.26 that Jesus will subjected himself to His father 00:39:21.29\00:39:24.07 even after sin is eradicated from the universe. 00:39:24.10\00:39:28.16 You see, in scripture subjection 00:39:28.19\00:39:30.96 is presented in a positive light. 00:39:30.99\00:39:33.70 To submit to the divine order is sublimed, 00:39:33.73\00:39:37.71 to refuse to submit to the divine order is rebellion. 00:39:37.74\00:39:42.07 And of course, that's how sin originated. 00:39:42.10\00:39:45.98 Now in other ways and why we can see clearly 00:39:46.01\00:39:49.74 that God established an order of the woman 00:39:49.77\00:39:53.47 being subject to the man is the fact 00:39:53.50\00:39:56.29 that even though Eve committed the first sin. 00:39:56.32\00:40:00.15 The Bible tells us that God held Adam accountable 00:40:00.18\00:40:04.73 for the entrance of sin into the world. 00:40:04.76\00:40:08.28 You know, when you go to Romans 5:12-21 00:40:08.31\00:40:12.92 Jesus is spoken as the second Eve, right? 00:40:12.95\00:40:18.05 What is Jesus spoken of? 00:40:18.08\00:40:20.34 As the second Adam. 00:40:20.37\00:40:21.75 Now wouldn't Jesus be the second Eve, 00:40:21.78\00:40:24.17 if Eve sinned first. 00:40:24.20\00:40:25.68 It must be that God held account Adam accountable for sin 00:40:25.71\00:40:30.05 because Adam was at the head of the human race. 00:40:30.08\00:40:33.16 There is no other explanation that can be used for this 00:40:33.19\00:40:37.04 because Christ is the second Adam. 00:40:37.07\00:40:40.12 Jesus is at the head of the human race 00:40:40.15\00:40:43.12 as the second Adam as Adam 00:40:43.15\00:40:45.55 was at the head of the human race at the very beginning. 00:40:45.58\00:40:49.46 Now there is one more point that I would like to make 00:40:49.49\00:40:52.18 and that is that scripture informs us that a height, 00:40:52.21\00:40:59.38 physical height matters 00:40:59.41\00:41:01.61 and the Spirit of Prophecy confirms this point. 00:41:01.64\00:41:04.83 Now let me ask you how tall was Eve in her relationship to Adam? 00:41:04.86\00:41:11.46 Well, in Signs of the Times, January 9, 1879, 00:41:11.49\00:41:16.69 we're told something about the height of Eve 00:41:16.72\00:41:19.55 as compared to Adam. 00:41:19.58\00:41:20.83 We're talking about physical height now. 00:41:20.86\00:41:23.82 This is what Ellen White explains. 00:41:23.85\00:41:26.20 Eve was not quite as tall as Adam. 00:41:26.23\00:41:30.34 Her head reached a little above his shoulders." 00:41:30.37\00:41:35.26 Now you'll say, are you saying that height 00:41:35.29\00:41:36.87 makes the difference when it comes to authority? 00:41:36.90\00:41:39.75 It's exactly what I'm saying. 00:41:39.78\00:41:41.69 And you'll say, well, how do you know that? 00:41:41.72\00:41:44.50 Let me just give you some examples 00:41:44.53\00:41:47.12 from the Spirit of Prophecy about how this issue of height 00:41:47.15\00:41:53.56 has to do with authority and has to do with headship. 00:41:53.59\00:41:58.49 Now, do you know that Ellen White in her writings says 00:41:58.52\00:42:01.85 that angels have different heights. 00:42:01.88\00:42:05.22 She speaks of tall commanding angels 00:42:05.25\00:42:08.48 being a the top of the chain of command 00:42:08.51\00:42:12.06 having authority over physically shorter angels. 00:42:12.09\00:42:15.67 You say is that possible? 00:42:15.70\00:42:17.36 Let me read you some statements. 00:42:17.39\00:42:19.83 In volume 1 of Spirit of Prophecy page 23, 00:42:19.86\00:42:23.23 Ellen White is speaking about when Lucifer 00:42:23.26\00:42:25.38 prepared to war against Christ. 00:42:25.41\00:42:28.38 She says, "The angels were marshaled in companies, 00:42:28.41\00:42:33.06 each division with a higher commanding angel at their head." 00:42:33.09\00:42:41.20 Interesting. Here is another interesting statement. 00:42:41.23\00:42:44.62 This is concerning when Jesus was arrested 00:42:44.65\00:42:47.93 in the Garden of Gethsemane, the mob came to arrest Him. 00:42:47.96\00:42:51.98 And in Early Writings 168, Ellen White explains, 00:42:52.01\00:42:56.19 "Many companies of holy angels, 00:42:56.22\00:42:58.61 each with a tall commanding angel at their head, 00:42:58.64\00:43:03.26 were sent to witness the scene." 00:43:03.29\00:43:06.91 And Ellen White tells us as God's people 00:43:06.94\00:43:08.86 are crying out for deliverance at the end of time. 00:43:08.89\00:43:12.44 During the time of Jacobs's trouble, 00:43:12.47\00:43:14.67 the angels whizzed to deliver God's people. 00:43:14.70\00:43:18.32 But she explains, "But a tall, 00:43:18.35\00:43:20.96 commanding angle suffered them not. 00:43:20.99\00:43:23.86 He said, "The will of God is not yet fulfilled. 00:43:23.89\00:43:27.15 They must drink of the cup. 00:43:27.18\00:43:28.99 They must be baptized with the baptism." 00:43:29.02\00:43:31.95 And Ellen White explains at the height 00:43:31.98\00:43:34.02 that Jesus is head over shoulders above 00:43:34.05\00:43:37.69 even the commanding angels because of His position. 00:43:37.72\00:43:42.38 So the fact that Eve was created 00:43:42.41\00:43:45.54 shorter than Adam has significance. 00:43:45.57\00:43:48.47 Now we wouldn't apply that today 00:43:48.50\00:43:50.09 because in the course of sin height makes no difference, 00:43:50.12\00:43:54.10 but if man had not sinned, 00:43:54.13\00:43:56.87 this arrangement would have continued 00:43:56.90\00:43:59.28 as Adam and Eve procreated. 00:43:59.31\00:44:02.84 Now I'd like to also share with you Ellen White's testimony, 00:44:02.87\00:44:05.93 is this clear up to what we studied so far? 00:44:05.96\00:44:08.05 Are there sufficient evidences in scriptures 00:44:08.08\00:44:10.58 for what we were studying? 00:44:10.61\00:44:11.64 I believe that there is an abundance of evidence. 00:44:11.67\00:44:13.75 Now let's take a look at a few things 00:44:13.78\00:44:16.36 that Ellen White has to tell us 00:44:16.39\00:44:18.63 about female submission and male headship. 00:44:18.66\00:44:24.10 And let's find out if this arrangement 00:44:24.13\00:44:25.92 ended at the cross or whether it's still exists 00:44:25.95\00:44:29.32 in the family relationship today. 00:44:29.35\00:44:31.45 And then we are going to study also 00:44:31.48\00:44:33.84 whether this arrangement spills over into the church as well. 00:44:33.87\00:44:38.68 I'd like to read from Counsels to the Church, 00:44:38.71\00:44:41.32 pages 145 and 146. 00:44:41.35\00:44:45.12 Here Ellen White explains, 00:44:45.15\00:44:47.03 "The Lord has constituted the husband, 00:44:47.06\00:44:50.94 the head of the wife to be her protector." 00:44:50.97\00:44:54.55 So did these arrangements come to an end at the cross? 00:44:54.58\00:44:58.26 Of course not, Ellen White is writing this 00:44:58.29\00:45:00.23 2000 years after the cross. 00:45:00.26\00:45:02.51 And she is saying, "The Lord has constituted the husband, 00:45:02.54\00:45:05.10 the head of the wife to be her protector; 00:45:05.13\00:45:09.13 he is the house-band of the family, 00:45:09.16\00:45:12.52 binding the members together, 00:45:12.55\00:45:14.57 even as Christ is the head of the church 00:45:14.60\00:45:17.02 and the Savior of the mystical body. 00:45:17.05\00:45:19.95 Let every husband who claims to love God 00:45:19.98\00:45:23.41 carefully study the requirements of God in his position. 00:45:23.44\00:45:28.58 Christ's authority is exercised in wisdom 00:45:28.61\00:45:32.02 in all kindness and gentleness." 00:45:32.05\00:45:34.16 Now did you hear that how Jesus exercises His authority, 00:45:34.19\00:45:37.48 how does He do it? 00:45:37.51\00:45:38.77 With an iron fist trampling on people. No. 00:45:38.80\00:45:42.24 Christ authority is exercising wisdom 00:45:42.27\00:45:44.84 in all kindness and gentleness. 00:45:44.87\00:45:47.27 "So let the husband exercise his power 00:45:47.30\00:45:51.75 and imitate the great head of the church. 00:45:51.78\00:45:54.96 So it applies to Christ, 00:45:54.99\00:45:56.77 applies also in the relationship of husbands to wives. 00:45:56.80\00:46:01.74 But at the same time Ellen White 00:46:01.77\00:46:04.20 warned husbands not to overdo it. 00:46:04.23\00:46:07.80 And not to brag about their position of authority. 00:46:07.83\00:46:11.19 In the book Acts of the Apostles, 00:46:11.22\00:46:13.08 page 360 Ellen White had this to say. 00:46:13.11\00:46:17.24 "It is no evidence of manliness in the husband for him 00:46:17.27\00:46:22.36 to dwell constantly upon his position as head of the family." 00:46:22.39\00:46:27.69 See Ellen White has a balancing statement. 00:46:27.72\00:46:30.02 She says just because he is the head, 00:46:30.05\00:46:31.36 it doesn't mean that he is always saying, 00:46:31.39\00:46:33.33 hey probably needed, I'm the head, 00:46:33.36\00:46:35.28 don't you forget it. I'm the one who decides. 00:46:35.31\00:46:37.46 No, Ellen White says we don't do that. 00:46:37.49\00:46:39.95 And so once again she says 00:46:39.98\00:46:41.54 "It is no evidence of manliness in the husband for him 00:46:41.57\00:46:44.65 to dwell constantly upon his position as head of the family. 00:46:44.68\00:46:48.84 It does not increase respect for him 00:46:48.87\00:46:51.44 to hear him quoting Scripture 00:46:51.47\00:46:53.53 to sustain his claims to authority. 00:46:53.56\00:46:56.62 It will not make him more manly to require his wife 00:46:56.65\00:47:00.37 the mother of his children to act upon his plans 00:47:00.40\00:47:04.04 as if they were infallible." 00:47:04.07\00:47:07.24 So Ellen White makes it very clear that 00:47:07.27\00:47:09.20 just because the man is the head, 00:47:09.23\00:47:11.18 it doesn't mean that he becomes a dictator. 00:47:11.21\00:47:13.83 She says in wisdom, in all kindness and in gentleness. 00:47:13.86\00:47:19.55 And folks, if the husband love the wife 00:47:19.58\00:47:23.67 and was willing to give himself for her, 00:47:23.70\00:47:26.47 the wife would have absolutely no problem 00:47:26.50\00:47:28.39 submitting to the respectful authority of the husband. 00:47:28.42\00:47:33.86 Now what is the role of husbands and wives? 00:47:33.89\00:47:37.74 I like to read from the Seventh-day Adventist 00:47:37.77\00:47:39.63 Bible commentary, volume 1 page 1082. 00:47:39.66\00:47:46.05 Here Ellen White explains clearly the position 00:47:46.08\00:47:49.10 that God created Adam to occupy. 00:47:49.13\00:47:52.31 This is what she says. "Adam was crowned king in Eden." 00:47:52.34\00:47:58.01 What was Adam's position? 00:47:58.04\00:47:59.93 King, notice it doesn't say God made Adam and Eve kings. 00:47:59.96\00:48:04.57 It says, "Adam was crowned king in Eden to him not to them. 00:48:04.60\00:48:10.91 To him was given dominion over every living thing 00:48:10.94\00:48:14.82 that God had created. 00:48:14.85\00:48:16.39 The Lord blessed Adam and Eve with intelligence 00:48:16.42\00:48:18.91 such as he not given to any other creature. 00:48:18.94\00:48:21.69 He made Adam the rightful sovereign 00:48:21.72\00:48:25.22 over all the works of His hands." 00:48:25.25\00:48:29.37 In another statement in Counsels to Teachers, page 33, 00:48:29.40\00:48:33.16 Ellen White explains, "Under God, 00:48:33.19\00:48:36.12 Adam was to stand at the head of the earthly family, 00:48:36.15\00:48:40.36 to maintain the principles of the heavenly family. 00:48:40.39\00:48:43.43 This would have brought peace and happiness." 00:48:43.46\00:48:47.22 Now somebody might be thinking. 00:48:47.25\00:48:49.06 Well, Pastor Bohr, what Ellen White says 00:48:49.09\00:48:51.57 is at odds with scripture. 00:48:51.60\00:48:53.99 Because Ellen White says that God crowned Adam king in Eden 00:48:54.02\00:48:58.76 and he made Adam the rightful servant 00:48:58.79\00:49:01.10 and he gave Adam dominion 00:49:01.13\00:49:03.14 but the Bible says that God also gave Eve dominion. 00:49:03.17\00:49:07.71 So how do you explain that it says 00:49:07.74\00:49:09.40 that God placed Adam as king and gave Adam dominion 00:49:09.43\00:49:13.53 when the Bible says that God gave Eve dominion as well? 00:49:13.56\00:49:17.95 The answer is that they were both given dominion 00:49:17.98\00:49:22.08 but they each had their legitimate steer of dominion. 00:49:22.11\00:49:27.74 You see, in ancient nations there was a king 00:49:27.77\00:49:31.42 and there was queen. 00:49:31.45\00:49:33.63 Both of them ruled together. 00:49:33.66\00:49:35.92 But where did the buck stop. 00:49:35.95\00:49:38.21 The buck stopped with the king. 00:49:38.24\00:49:40.92 Now, an analogous situation can be seen in the relationship 00:49:40.95\00:49:45.57 between the God the Father and Jesus Christ. 00:49:45.60\00:49:48.73 When probation closes, listen carefully 00:49:48.76\00:49:51.00 when probation closes, we are told in the Bible 00:49:51.03\00:49:54.28 that the kingdoms of the world will belong 00:49:54.31\00:49:56.92 to both the Father and Son. 00:49:56.95\00:49:59.17 That's Revelation 11:15, "The kingdoms of the world 00:49:59.20\00:50:02.99 had become the kingdom of God and of his Christ." 00:50:03.02\00:50:07.70 And yet we've already noticed in our previous study 00:50:07.73\00:50:10.90 that in eternity, the Father is going to be the head of Christ 00:50:10.93\00:50:15.67 and Jesus is going to be subject to the authority of His Father. 00:50:15.70\00:50:19.40 And so how is it possible that both of them 00:50:19.43\00:50:21.82 are going to takeover the dominion and the kingdom 00:50:21.85\00:50:24.40 and yet one of them is subject to the other. 00:50:24.43\00:50:26.56 It must be that they exercise different roles. 00:50:26.59\00:50:30.06 Are you following me or not. 00:50:30.09\00:50:31.87 So the question is. 00:50:31.90\00:50:33.11 What is the wife's realm of dominion 00:50:33.14\00:50:35.80 and what is the husband's realm of dominion? 00:50:35.83\00:50:38.96 What are their roles or functions in dominion? 00:50:38.99\00:50:43.88 Ellen White in a very interesting statement have this 00:50:43.91\00:50:48.92 to say, speaking about the mother, she says, 00:50:48.95\00:50:51.36 "The mother may preside in her family as queen in her domain, 00:50:51.39\00:50:59.31 her household being her kingdom." 00:50:59.34\00:51:03.43 Isn't that interesting? 00:51:03.46\00:51:05.38 So as the woman given dominion too? 00:51:05.41\00:51:08.03 What was the realm of her dominion? 00:51:08.06\00:51:10.88 Her household. 00:51:10.91\00:51:12.45 And let me ask you, what was her role, 00:51:12.48\00:51:15.81 her role was to be what. The mother in the household. 00:51:15.84\00:51:20.90 You know, it's more than interesting 00:51:20.93\00:51:23.14 to notice this statement 00:51:23.17\00:51:25.26 that I just read with in its broader context. 00:51:25.29\00:51:28.20 This statement where Ellen White states 00:51:28.23\00:51:30.16 the mother may preside in her family as queen in her domain, 00:51:30.19\00:51:34.47 her household being her kingdom. 00:51:34.50\00:51:36.76 Actually, it's from an article that she wrote 00:51:36.79\00:51:39.85 which is titled proper education. 00:51:39.88\00:51:43.33 You know, as I read this article in the moment 00:51:43.36\00:51:45.21 I'm going to share with you a few paragraphs 00:51:45.24\00:51:48.63 from this article that she wrote. 00:51:48.66\00:51:50.56 I couldn't help but think that many women 00:51:50.59\00:51:53.02 who would read this today 00:51:53.05\00:51:54.67 would find Ellen White's remarks outdated 00:51:54.70\00:51:58.05 and downright archaic and prehistoric. 00:51:58.08\00:52:01.67 They would also undoubtedly disagree 00:52:01.70\00:52:04.72 with Ellen White's definition of women's rights. 00:52:04.75\00:52:07.69 Because she uses that expression women's rights time and again. 00:52:07.72\00:52:11.58 But upon serious reflection Ellen White's description 00:52:11.61\00:52:15.24 of the role of the wife fits perfectly 00:52:15.27\00:52:18.25 with God's original plan for the human family. 00:52:18.28\00:52:21.62 Allow me to read you paragraph as we draw this to a close 00:52:21.65\00:52:25.42 and we'll pickup on this in our next lecture. 00:52:25.45\00:52:28.87 She says this, "I have observed a great deficiency 00:52:28.90\00:52:33.39 in so called educated ladies." 00:52:33.42\00:52:37.58 Ha, she continues saying, 00:52:37.61\00:52:40.19 "They may have graduated with honors 00:52:40.22\00:52:43.61 but are shamefully deficient in the practical duties of life. 00:52:43.64\00:52:48.45 They are destitute of the qualifications necessary 00:52:48.48\00:52:51.76 for the proper regulation and happiness of the family." 00:52:51.79\00:52:56.19 Is that the domain, the kingdom? Absolutely. 00:52:56.22\00:52:59.16 She continues saying, "They may talk of woman's 00:52:59.19\00:53:03.48 elevated sphere and of her rights, 00:53:03.51\00:53:07.15 while they themselves sink far below the true sphere of woman. 00:53:07.18\00:53:13.08 God designed that woman should become intelligent 00:53:13.11\00:53:15.75 in the most essential duties of life. 00:53:15.78\00:53:18.41 But very many in the scale of knowledge and efficiency 00:53:18.44\00:53:21.91 are even below their hired servants. 00:53:21.94\00:53:25.21 It is the right of every daughter of Eve in our land 00:53:25.24\00:53:28.76 to be thoroughly educated in household duties, 00:53:28.79\00:53:32.28 having a knowledge of all the branches 00:53:32.31\00:53:34.41 of practical life in domestic labor. 00:53:34.44\00:53:37.42 She may preside in her family." 00:53:37.45\00:53:39.26 Here is the statement in its context, 00:53:39.29\00:53:41.35 "She may preside in her family as queen in her domain, 00:53:41.38\00:53:46.06 her household being her kingdom. 00:53:46.09\00:53:49.10 She should be fully competent to direct her servants." 00:53:49.13\00:53:53.10 She says "It is a woman's right to be qualified 00:53:53.13\00:53:56.55 to direct the expanding minds of her children. 00:53:56.58\00:53:59.80 It is her right to have understanding of her own 00:53:59.83\00:54:03.35 and her children's organisms that she may know 00:54:03.38\00:54:06.12 how to treat her children, and save them 00:54:06.15\00:54:08.54 from the poisons of doctor's drugs. 00:54:08.57\00:54:11.38 She may adore her gracious creator 00:54:11.41\00:54:13.36 as she contemplates how beautifully 00:54:13.39\00:54:15.23 and simply nature carries on her work 00:54:15.26\00:54:17.83 when she is not interfered with. 00:54:17.86\00:54:20.08 She may have an intelligent nurse 00:54:20.11\00:54:21.82 and a physician of her own dear children 00:54:21.85\00:54:24.85 instead of leaving their precious lives 00:54:24.88\00:54:27.25 in the hands of stranger physicians 00:54:27.28\00:54:29.59 to be drugged to death. 00:54:29.62\00:54:31.62 It is the woman's right to know 00:54:31.65\00:54:33.69 how to regulate her own habits and those of her children, 00:54:33.72\00:54:37.15 in diet and dress, in exercise and in domestic duties, 00:54:37.18\00:54:41.53 and employment in the open air 00:54:41.56\00:54:43.55 in relations to life and health." 00:54:43.58\00:54:46.10 This is an important domain, this is important kingdom, 00:54:46.13\00:54:49.18 the world would not be as messed up 00:54:49.21\00:54:50.92 as it is if the roles had been respected. 00:54:50.95\00:54:53.75 She continue saying, "Many mothers do not take 00:54:53.78\00:54:57.81 half the interest in the constitutional 00:54:57.84\00:55:00.47 wants of their children that the intelligent farmer 00:55:00.50\00:55:03.88 shows to the brutes around him. 00:55:03.91\00:55:07.43 It is a woman's right to look after 00:55:07.46\00:55:10.12 the interest of her husband." 00:55:10.15\00:55:11.54 All have mercy now. She's into meddling. 00:55:11.57\00:55:15.25 "It is woman's right to look after the interest 00:55:15.28\00:55:17.72 of her husband to have a care for his wardrobe 00:55:17.75\00:55:21.82 and to seek to make him happy. It is her right." 00:55:21.85\00:55:26.33 Does she say it is her right quite a bit or absolutely. 00:55:26.36\00:55:30.04 "It is her right to improve her mind and manners, 00:55:30.07\00:55:33.46 to be social, cheerful and happy, 00:55:33.49\00:55:36.64 shedding sunshine in her family, 00:55:36.67\00:55:39.20 and making it a little heaven. 00:55:39.23\00:55:41.59 And she may have an interest for more than me and mind. 00:55:41.62\00:55:46.09 She should consider that society has claims upon her." 00:55:46.12\00:55:51.57 What a powerful statement about the role of the woman. 00:55:51.60\00:55:55.86 Does the woman have dominion? 00:55:55.89\00:55:58.10 You better believe she does. Does she have a kingdom? 00:55:58.13\00:56:01.51 Yes, she does have a kingdom 00:56:01.54\00:56:03.51 with which no one should interfere. 00:56:03.54\00:56:07.43 You see Ellen White held that the duties of the mother 00:56:07.46\00:56:12.88 are so important and I quote that they're most sacred, 00:56:12.91\00:56:17.90 more holy than those of men. 00:56:17.93\00:56:21.63 But she also says that men and women 00:56:21.66\00:56:24.58 husbands, and wives have distinctive duties 00:56:24.61\00:56:28.47 and they have each their own post of doing. 00:56:28.50\00:56:33.18 The problem is that in the world today folks, 00:56:33.21\00:56:35.90 the media have demeaned motherhood. 00:56:35.93\00:56:38.97 It has demeaned the domain of the mother 00:56:39.00\00:56:42.20 and the home caring for the children. 00:56:42.23\00:56:45.03 Women today want to be so called professionals 00:56:45.06\00:56:49.03 and as a result the children have no education, 00:56:49.06\00:56:53.08 they have no care in society as a result falls apart. 00:56:53.11\00:56:58.38 I know that this is not politically correct 00:56:58.41\00:57:00.89 but it's the truth. 00:57:00.92\00:57:02.48 The reason why the world is in such a mess 00:57:02.51\00:57:06.03 is because the roles of husbands and wives have been lost. 00:57:06.06\00:57:12.34 And the only way in which things can improve is 00:57:12.37\00:57:15.65 if we recover the legitimate roles 00:57:15.68\00:57:18.94 that are to be filled by husbands and by wives. 00:57:18.97\00:57:22.85
