Welcome to "Wonderfully Made" 00:00:34.45\00:00:36.08 I'm Amy Wellard from the "Wildwood Lifestyle Center" 00:00:36.11\00:00:39.00 Today we're going to be talking 00:00:39.03\00:00:40.40 about a wonderful time in your life "breastfeeding" 00:00:40.43\00:00:43.47 ...breastfeeding your baby. 00:00:43.50\00:00:44.87 With me today is Dr. Cherie Lou Fernandez 00:00:44.90\00:00:46.71 Welcome Cherie Lou. Thank you! 00:00:46.74\00:00:48.48 It's nice to have you on the program again 00:00:48.51\00:00:50.35 to continue our "Vibrant Women series" 00:00:50.38\00:00:52.50 How can you have health while you're breastfeeding 00:00:52.53\00:00:54.94 and you're in postpartum, and maybe you've got some 00:00:54.97\00:00:57.35 tearing and you're exhausted. 00:00:57.38\00:00:59.35 Can breastfeeding become a wonderful experience? 00:00:59.38\00:01:02.40 It SHOULD - it should be a wonderful experience, 00:01:02.43\00:01:05.42 and it's because when the baby is latching on you, 00:01:05.45\00:01:09.98 the normal thing is... when the baby is 00:01:10.01\00:01:13.04 sucking on your breast and feeding, 00:01:13.07\00:01:15.04 and trying to bond with you... 00:01:15.07\00:01:16.52 Actually, what happens is the hormone oxytocin is 00:01:16.55\00:01:20.90 being released from the mom's brain, 00:01:20.93\00:01:23.76 and it makes the mom, and even with the baby, 00:01:23.79\00:01:28.61 it makes the bonding stronger between the mom and the baby, 00:01:28.64\00:01:32.84 AND it gives the mom a feeling of, "I LOVE MY BABY" 00:01:32.87\00:01:37.74 "This is NOW my baby" 00:01:37.77\00:01:39.59 It makes a stronger connection between the mom and the baby. 00:01:39.62\00:01:43.62 The breastfeeding is what we regularly do... 00:01:43.65\00:01:46.35 The first thing is when the baby comes out, 00:01:46.38\00:01:48.13 we put the baby on the breast of the mom. 00:01:48.16\00:01:50.18 It enhances this thing... the oxytocin bonding feeling 00:01:50.21\00:01:54.93 of the mom and the baby. 00:01:54.96\00:01:56.35 So what is it that's so special about the breast milk in itself? 00:01:56.38\00:02:00.40 Why is it the best nutrition? 00:02:00.43\00:02:02.66 Oh, there are benefits, VERY big benefits 00:02:02.69\00:02:06.37 to BOTH the mother and to the baby. 00:02:06.40\00:02:10.00 First let's say to the baby because it's not the mom 00:02:10.03\00:02:13.08 who is drinking the breast milk... it's the baby! 00:02:13.11\00:02:18.10 Anyway, the first thing is breast milk is really gold! 00:02:18.13\00:02:24.27 Breast milk is gold, it's a normal... 00:02:24.30\00:02:29.38 I mean, it's what the Lord gave us to be what 00:02:29.41\00:02:33.45 we are going to give to our 00:02:33.48\00:02:34.85 babies the first few days of its life - the first month, 00:02:34.88\00:02:38.92 several months of its life. 00:02:38.95\00:02:40.56 So they call it "liquid gold," 00:02:40.59\00:02:44.89 especially the first one that comes out, 00:02:44.92\00:02:48.08 and it is called, I know everybody knows it... 00:02:48.11\00:02:50.74 It's colostrum - I'll say it anyway. 00:02:50.77\00:02:53.58 "Colostrum" Colostrum is very, very rich 00:02:53.61\00:02:58.33 in antibodies that's why it makes it VERY important 00:02:58.36\00:03:02.09 for the mom to give the first milk to the baby - 00:03:02.12\00:03:05.59 because it is full of antibodies 00:03:05.62\00:03:08.68 so it's a protective thing for the baby. 00:03:08.71\00:03:11.81 How many days does she produce colostrum? 00:03:11.84\00:03:14.00 About 2 or 3, as far as 4 or 5 days. 00:03:14.03\00:03:18.63 But it's the first coming out and the color of the milk 00:03:18.66\00:03:21.90 is not white, it is yellowish because it's very concentrated 00:03:21.93\00:03:26.20 with even fat and the protein antibodies. 00:03:26.23\00:03:30.66 So it is relatively thicker... 00:03:30.69\00:03:33.05 Oh I believe, some women back home, the say - 00:03:33.08\00:03:35.65 "Oh, don't give it to the baby, it is - 00:03:35.68\00:03:37.70 what they call this, I almost said it in my language... 00:03:37.73\00:03:41.39 "It is spoiled" Because when you leave 00:03:41.42\00:03:44.87 milk out, it turns yellow and thickens, you know... 00:03:44.90\00:03:48.65 But it's not so, that first milk that comes out is very 00:03:48.68\00:03:56.11 important for your baby's welfare in the first 1-1/2 years 00:03:56.14\00:03:59.91 ...the antibodies comes with it. 00:03:59.94\00:04:02.58 Does the constituency of the breast milk actually change 00:04:02.61\00:04:05.87 as the baby gets older? It does... there are 3 different 00:04:05.90\00:04:09.43 changes in the... I mean, what do you say? 00:04:09.46\00:04:15.54 Different constituencies? Yes! 00:04:15.58\00:04:19.88 The first milk is very yellowish and thick; 00:04:19.91\00:04:21.37 then it turns a little bit whiter, 00:04:21.40\00:04:24.40 and then it turns a tinge of blue, 00:04:24.43\00:04:27.55 very, very dilute and bluish... 00:04:27.58\00:04:30.07 But don't be fooled by that dilute-looking thing 00:04:30.10\00:04:33.68 because that's still very rich for the baby. 00:04:33.71\00:04:36.18 The colostrum is only a very small amount, 00:04:36.21\00:04:38.67 but it's enough for the little tiny stomach of the baby. 00:04:38.70\00:04:42.23 It's very little that comes out, 00:04:42.26\00:04:43.63 but the stomach of the baby is very small still too. 00:04:43.66\00:04:46.22 It's just enough for the stomach size. 00:04:46.25\00:04:48.71 And, is it true that breast milk is easier for the baby to digest 00:04:48.74\00:04:53.40 than any other formula milk that's available. 00:04:53.43\00:04:56.19 Yes, it's because the protein molecules, 00:04:56.22\00:05:01.27 or the protein substances are just the right kind 00:05:01.30\00:05:07.04 for the baby's stomach to digest. 00:05:07.07\00:05:10.93 And, are there any other special qualities about the breast milk 00:05:10.96\00:05:14.47 that mean it's just ideally designed for the baby's 00:05:14.50\00:05:18.70 sensitive intestine and growing immune system. 00:05:18.73\00:05:21.82 Exactly, again as part like what we had said earlier, 00:05:21.85\00:05:25.63 colostrum is rich with antibodies. 00:05:25.66\00:05:27.74 Whatever the mom has goes to the baby. 00:05:27.77\00:05:30.34 So if the mom is protected from a lot of problems, 00:05:30.37\00:05:33.12 it goes to the baby. 00:05:33.15\00:05:35.24 So it's not something that is pre-made, it's nature's thing 00:05:35.27\00:05:43.04 Everything that is nature-made, 00:05:43.07\00:05:45.95 which is really intended to be this one, 00:05:45.98\00:05:49.25 is supposed to be better for the baby. 00:05:49.28\00:05:52.96 We are the only specie, although sometimes 00:05:52.99\00:05:57.36 we feed our cats with milk from the cow, 00:05:57.39\00:06:00.49 but it's not really that way, 00:06:00.52\00:06:01.89 that deliberately drinks the milk from another specie... 00:06:01.92\00:06:05.59 I heard that from somebody and it really 00:06:05.62\00:06:09.50 made me come to my senses, really. 00:06:09.53\00:06:11.62 We're not supposed to be drinking the milk 00:06:11.65\00:06:13.38 of another specie because our 00:06:13.41\00:06:16.10 milk is supposed to be for for OUR kind, 00:06:16.13\00:06:18.68 but we would rather go to another... 00:06:18.71\00:06:21.32 And our constituency in our body is not fit 00:06:21.35\00:06:27.16 to be able to digest the other... Right 00:06:27.19\00:06:31.36 So all the antibodies that the mom has goes to the baby; 00:06:31.39\00:06:34.15 all what the mom gets goes to the baby. 00:06:34.18\00:06:36.75 It's a protective design. 00:06:36.78\00:06:38.61 A beautiful design the Creator has given us. 00:06:38.64\00:06:40.74 And, I believe that there are other long-term benefits 00:06:40.77\00:06:44.51 to breastfeeding and can actually minimize the risk 00:06:44.54\00:06:47.73 of the baby developing other diseases later in life. 00:06:47.76\00:06:50.77 Is that right? 00:06:50.80\00:06:52.17 Yes, for example.. If you breast feed your baby, 00:06:52.20\00:06:54.93 the baby will be less prone to develop diabetes type 2 00:06:54.96\00:07:01.59 which is a metabolic problem, 00:07:01.62\00:07:03.88 you know - sugar, insulin resistance 00:07:03.91\00:07:09.30 and everything like that, being able to cope with this problem; 00:07:09.33\00:07:12.55 obesity too - a baby who is breastfed, 00:07:12.58\00:07:15.39 of course, I've seen obese babies that were breastfed, 00:07:15.42\00:07:18.78 but regularly, it diminishes the possibility of a baby 00:07:18.81\00:07:23.51 becoming obese in the future and having asthma. 00:07:23.54\00:07:26.90 You see, the mom's milk is human-to-human, 00:07:26.93\00:07:31.10 but the cow or the goat-to-human 00:07:31.13\00:07:34.17 is a different species, so then you might develop antibodies 00:07:34.20\00:07:38.56 and sensitivities against the milk and so later on 00:07:38.59\00:07:42.14 you become somebody prone to develop asthma, 00:07:42.17\00:07:44.88 and lower respiratory tract infections. 00:07:44.91\00:07:48.04 The mother's milk can keep you from having these things, 00:07:48.07\00:07:53.68 and besides, I forgot to tell you earlier... 00:07:53.71\00:07:57.31 A little baby born, a premature baby, 00:07:57.34\00:07:59.65 if you feed the premature baby with milk infant formula, 00:07:59.68\00:08:04.64 that's milk from the cow, the baby has a chance of 00:08:04.67\00:08:08.34 developing... what you call, "necrotizing enterocolitis. " 00:08:08.37\00:08:13.87 It's an inflammation of the small intestines, 00:08:13.90\00:08:16.93 and it's a big problem - can cause even the death of the baby 00:08:16.96\00:08:21.19 because the inflammatory reaction of the 00:08:21.22\00:08:24.42 baby's intestines to the milk of the cow... 00:08:24.45\00:08:27.63 But if you would give the premature... 00:08:27.66\00:08:29.03 It's premature yet, okay, so it's not yet really ripe, 00:08:29.06\00:08:32.58 and you give the wrong thing... 00:08:32.61\00:08:34.03 But if you give the HUMAN milk to the premature baby, 00:08:34.06\00:08:37.41 there is no necrotizing enterocolitis that 00:08:37.44\00:08:41.18 will develop with the milk. 00:08:41.21\00:08:43.16 So whatever... whatever time, whatever milk, 00:08:43.19\00:08:47.26 it has to be mother's milk. 00:08:47.29\00:08:49.59 Okay, now if somebody is in a situation where they can't 00:08:49.62\00:08:53.29 give their own milk to their baby, 00:08:53.32\00:08:55.53 what would be the best alternative 00:08:55.56\00:08:58.11 besides the cow's milk? 00:08:58.14\00:09:00.43 Oh okay, the best milk is another mom's milk! 00:09:00.46\00:09:05.51 But we have to be careful though... 00:09:05.54\00:09:07.28 I think that would be really the best, 00:09:07.31\00:09:09.81 you get a surrogate mom to feed your baby. 00:09:09.84\00:09:12.61 But you have to be very, very careful because you don't 00:09:12.64\00:09:15.44 know the temperaments of this woman; 00:09:15.47\00:09:17.19 you don't know what she's eating; 00:09:17.22\00:09:18.63 you don't know what she is going through. 00:09:18.66\00:09:20.44 Wise decisions - you know? 00:09:20.47\00:09:22.69 Human-to-human should be the first consideration. 00:09:22.72\00:09:28.27 But if not, then you've got to get either cow's milk 00:09:28.30\00:09:33.13 or soymilk 00:09:33.16\00:09:34.67 But soymilk that we have in this pack that we buy 00:09:34.70\00:09:37.49 in Wal-Mart, is not the kind of milk that you feed to 00:09:37.52\00:09:41.39 the newborn or to your baby... 00:09:41.42\00:09:43.18 Because it will even say on this box... 00:09:43.21\00:09:46.07 It says - It's not infant formula... something 00:09:46.10\00:09:49.30 Because it's not made - they have to fix it to 00:09:49.33\00:09:53.10 at least closely match that of the mother's. 00:09:53.13\00:09:58.34 So many suggest that it's really 00:09:58.37\00:10:01.21 better to use the soy infant formula 00:10:01.24\00:10:04.01 OVER the cow infant formula. 00:10:04.05\00:10:07.09 Now let's go back to the actual mechanism of the breastfeeding. 00:10:07.13\00:10:10.92 Many mothers have a hard time getting the latch to take place 00:10:10.95\00:10:15.14 for the baby and it results in lots of soreness. 00:10:15.17\00:10:17.92 How can we avoid that? 00:10:17.95\00:10:20.07 Oh many times it happens because the breast of the mother 00:10:20.10\00:10:24.80 was not... have you ever heard "inverted nipples" 00:10:24.83\00:10:30.16 If I had inverted nipples and I was pregnant, 00:10:30.19\00:10:33.92 there are ways by which I can prepare my breasts for the baby 00:10:33.95\00:10:38.15 to latch-on when I deliver my baby. 00:10:38.18\00:10:42.29 They do exercises... they pull and they twist 00:10:42.32\00:10:46.30 the nipples out to stretch them out 00:10:46.33\00:10:49.18 because well, they were inside for a long time. 00:10:49.21\00:10:52.54 So slowly you pull your nipples OUT and stretch, 00:10:52.57\00:10:56.44 so that then by the time it's time for your to breastfeed, 00:10:56.47\00:10:59.61 they are OUT! 00:10:59.64\00:11:01.29 You have to do that - if you don't do that, 00:11:01.32\00:11:03.58 it's hard to do it during the time 00:11:03.61\00:11:05.58 when the baby is there already. 00:11:05.61\00:11:06.98 It has to be preparation for the birth. 00:11:07.01\00:11:10.50 And many times, the new mother doesn't know how to 00:11:10.53\00:11:14.19 put the baby on the breast, 00:11:14.22\00:11:16.95 and there are techniques how to hold the baby. 00:11:16.98\00:11:19.89 It's normal - it's amazing you put the baby on the chest 00:11:19.92\00:11:22.99 and as soon as the baby's cheek touches the nipple 00:11:23.02\00:11:27.58 it will crawl and put it's head, 00:11:27.61\00:11:30.34 even if you just put it there and hold it and - you know 00:11:30.37\00:11:32.96 Regularly, we just... latch on this way, 00:11:32.99\00:11:37.55 but you just put your baby close there, 00:11:37.58\00:11:39.63 it has this - what you call the "rooting reflex" 00:11:39.66\00:11:43.02 So you root on the thing that's 00:11:43.05\00:11:45.79 really supposed to be feeding you. 00:11:45.82\00:11:47.95 Nature is that way - the Lord has created us that way. 00:11:47.98\00:11:51.97 So the baby latches on to the breast and the baby knows 00:11:52.00\00:11:54.94 how to suck. 00:11:54.97\00:11:56.84 Sometimes you have very, very big nipples 00:11:56.87\00:11:59.51 and the baby's mouth - the baby is a small baby 00:11:59.54\00:12:04.65 It's only the nipple that the baby can suck on to, 00:12:04.68\00:12:11.28 but when you are sucking on the nipple, 00:12:11.31\00:12:13.36 you don't get any milk. 00:12:13.39\00:12:15.07 The nipple has to go deep into the mouth, 00:12:15.10\00:12:18.79 and the lips of the baby should be around the areola. 00:12:18.82\00:12:22.85 So it should be big; the lips of the baby 00:12:22.88\00:12:27.09 around the areola - like this, 00:12:27.12\00:12:28.90 because if it's NOT done that way, you won't be able to cause 00:12:28.93\00:12:33.25 the ejection reflex or the spurting out of the 00:12:33.29\00:12:37.32 ejection of the milk. 00:12:37.36\00:12:38.73 So many moms don't know that and they put the baby 00:12:38.76\00:12:41.54 and it becomes sore because the baby is sucking on the nipple 00:12:41.57\00:12:44.72 when it should be all the way to base of the areola. 00:12:44.75\00:12:49.60 Right... are there any creams that she can put on 00:12:49.63\00:12:52.31 if she has become so sore and tender? 00:12:52.34\00:12:55.48 You have to get something that won't upset your baby. 00:12:55.51\00:12:59.91 You can't put lotions that are with a lot of stuff. 00:12:59.94\00:13:03.88 They say you can put probably mineral oil 00:13:03.91\00:13:09.34 and rub it, soften it, especially when it's still wet 00:13:09.37\00:13:13.60 and then you wipe it; clean it with a cloth, 00:13:13.63\00:13:15.94 and when it's supple and wet, 00:13:15.97\00:13:17.40 then you rub the thing around it. 00:13:17.43\00:13:19.82 Now sometimes in the first flush of the flow of the 00:13:19.85\00:13:23.63 breast milk through the breast, it can cause an engorgement 00:13:23.66\00:13:27.39 which is very, very painful. 00:13:27.42\00:13:29.10 And that, if it's not alleviated right away, can lead to mastitis 00:13:29.13\00:13:33.65 Now, what can be done because this is very common, I believe. 00:13:33.68\00:13:36.92 Oh many women, Amy, have problems with that. 00:13:36.95\00:13:40.36 The breasts just become engorged and full of milk. 00:13:40.39\00:13:46.48 Because, you see, the baby is learning... 00:13:46.51\00:13:49.39 When the baby sucks on the breast, the mom produces 00:13:49.42\00:13:56.40 a lot of milk but the baby's tummy is just so tiny, 00:13:56.43\00:14:00.48 and so, yes, the milk is left back there... 00:14:00.51\00:14:03.72 So maybe the mom can buy these pumps; 00:14:03.75\00:14:08.52 there are 2 types - you could the manual, 00:14:08.55\00:14:10.73 or you could have the machine, the electric one. 00:14:10.76\00:14:15.92 The one that's manual is only one at a time, you know... 00:14:15.95\00:14:18.79 But the machine is much easier because you 00:14:18.82\00:14:23.03 just put 2 like this. 00:14:23.06\00:14:24.43 So then you can empty your breasts, 00:14:24.46\00:14:27.31 and not have so much risk of developing mastitis. 00:14:27.34\00:14:35.16 But even then, when we do that 00:14:35.19\00:14:37.49 sometimes they still have mastitis. 00:14:37.52\00:14:40.55 So then you can use something 00:14:40.58\00:14:42.74 that cools down the breasts around the area. 00:14:42.77\00:14:47.10 You could get cabbage, not that 00:14:47.13\00:14:48.53 you're going to be looking to a salad - no... 00:14:48.56\00:14:51.21 but you get the cabbage and you put it a little bit 00:14:51.24\00:14:55.30 on the stove, just to warm it up a little bit, 00:14:55.33\00:14:59.01 so that it becomes tender because cabbage is hard. 00:14:59.04\00:15:01.78 When it's put on the stove and it becomes tender, 00:15:01.81\00:15:03.78 then you mash the cabbage and then you put it on the breast - 00:15:03.81\00:15:08.99 like a poultice, a cabbage poultice. 00:15:09.02\00:15:11.77 You could also use potato; it cools the breasts, 00:15:11.80\00:15:15.28 and it helps alleviate the inflammation 00:15:15.31\00:15:18.07 associated with the beginning mastitis. 00:15:18.10\00:15:20.63 Now, if you use potato, would you cook the potato first? 00:15:20.66\00:15:24.22 No, still the same, still raw. 00:15:24.25\00:15:26.28 Okay, but the cabbage you cooked 00:15:26.31\00:15:27.78 it a little bit just to get it tender. Yes, just heated it 00:15:27.81\00:15:30.20 so that it becomes tender, so it's easy for you to mash. 00:15:30.23\00:15:32.59 And that actually relieves the congestion... Yes it does 00:15:32.62\00:15:35.83 Something that I also used was clay poultice. 00:15:35.86\00:15:38.96 That actually helped with the mastitis. 00:15:38.99\00:15:41.05 Yes, it's easier and besides, it is absorbent. 00:15:41.08\00:15:44.54 It absorbs whatever is in there that is causing inflammation. 00:15:44.57\00:15:48.70 So clay and/or charcoal but they say clay may be 00:15:48.73\00:15:55.45 able to work better but they are both absorbent structures 00:15:55.48\00:15:58.69 so then you could also put it there. 00:15:58.72\00:16:01.05 Yes, I just pasted it with a little bit of water 00:16:01.08\00:16:03.07 and then paste it on and you don't even need to wear a bra 00:16:03.10\00:16:05.63 You just paste it on because it dries on the breast, 00:16:05.66\00:16:08.23 and it worked wonderfully within 24 hours. 00:16:08.26\00:16:10.61 So it was just like that, just plain... Um hm straight-on. 00:16:10.64\00:16:12.99 Not a poultice? Oh, okay I learned something new. 00:16:13.02\00:16:15.84 If you can do it simpler, why not. 00:16:15.87\00:16:18.26 That's the way to do it! 00:16:18.29\00:16:20.61 Why make your life so complicated. 00:16:20.64\00:16:22.59 So not only the baby is benefitting from the breast milk 00:16:22.62\00:16:25.93 the mom is actually benefitting too. 00:16:25.96\00:16:28.58 So let's talk about the benefits to mom. 00:16:28.61\00:16:31.01 Oh of course, and to the father's pocket! 00:16:31.04\00:16:36.24 You know how expensive... 00:16:36.27\00:16:39.81 I mean, I went to Wal-Mart to see how much one little can 00:16:39.84\00:16:43.86 of infant formula costs and and throughout the time the baby 00:16:43.89\00:16:50.57 ...And the baby seems to be drinking and drinking more 00:16:50.60\00:16:53.74 and more and your pockets becoming deeper and deeper... 00:16:53.77\00:16:57.43 You know, you - OH WELL... it has something to do with 00:16:57.46\00:17:02.01 finances - you know... One, that's only one. 00:17:02.04\00:17:06.15 It helps you with you financing, save money - very, very big. 00:17:06.18\00:17:10.85 A lot of us have problems there. 00:17:10.88\00:17:12.68 And, of course, it's easier... You don't need to 00:17:12.71\00:17:16.11 BOIL your baby bottles; you don't have to get sterile water. 00:17:16.14\00:17:22.70 It's just ready and it's in the right temperature, 00:17:22.73\00:17:27.08 the right constituency and it's good already. 00:17:27.11\00:17:32.22 So everywhere you go, you don't 00:17:32.25\00:17:34.07 have to be carrying your... it's convenient! 00:17:34.10\00:17:36.89 Very convenient for your mother. 00:17:36.92\00:17:38.47 Besides, it makes your mother feel great! 00:17:38.50\00:17:41.48 The bonding between your mommy... 00:17:41.51\00:17:43.51 I was not able to breastfeed my baby. 00:17:43.54\00:17:46.67 I only got milk by pumping, and one thing too, 00:17:46.70\00:17:52.41 the mother should be really happy about 00:17:52.44\00:17:54.69 the breastfeeding experience... 00:17:54.72\00:17:57.51 And it seems to be very important that the mother 00:17:57.54\00:18:02.82 should be relaxed and no stress for the milk to be 00:18:02.85\00:18:07.56 good also for the baby and it's a thing that the mother can 00:18:07.59\00:18:14.04 have a nice feeling of closeness with the baby. 00:18:14.07\00:18:20.69 ...And she gets that oxytocin released. 00:18:20.72\00:18:23.26 That's the hormone that makes us feel good and makes us feel 00:18:23.29\00:18:25.90 loved and nurtured - so the mother is getting 00:18:25.93\00:18:28.36 nurturing as well as the baby. Yes 00:18:28.39\00:18:30.34 Now, the baby, you mentioned earlier, has a lower risk of 00:18:30.37\00:18:33.56 developing diabetes when it's older... Yes 00:18:33.59\00:18:36.34 Now, does breastfeeding help 00:18:36.37\00:18:37.78 the MOTHER to reduce her risk... 00:18:37.81\00:18:39.60 It does too, it does too because then all the extra 00:18:39.63\00:18:42.63 food you're eating and getting into your body, 00:18:42.66\00:18:45.32 is used for your baby and some of the mechanism of action too, 00:18:45.35\00:18:52.38 it does help the mom, even in her health... Wonderful 00:18:52.41\00:18:56.62 Besides cancer of the breast and cancer of the ovaries are 00:18:56.65\00:19:01.81 decreased when you breastfeed. 00:19:01.84\00:19:04.14 The risk of developing it is decreased by breastfeeding. 00:19:04.17\00:19:08.02 So that's a very, very big thing already. 00:19:08.05\00:19:10.85 Yes, that's another reason to opt for breastfeeding 00:19:10.88\00:19:14.00 if you possibly can. 00:19:14.03\00:19:15.40 Now, we realize that some of us are just not able, 00:19:15.43\00:19:18.05 for whatever reason, to breastfeed, 00:19:18.08\00:19:19.91 and it may come as a very big disappointment to you, 00:19:19.94\00:19:22.80 and I think Dr. Cherie Lou, you mentioned that 00:19:22.83\00:19:24.79 it was a big disappointment to you that you were not able 00:19:24.82\00:19:27.48 to breastfeed your baby... 00:19:27.51\00:19:28.88 What are some of the conditions where a woman just cannot do it? 00:19:28.91\00:19:33.78 Well in cases where the woman has severe depression, 00:19:33.81\00:19:39.12 and she does really need to take medications, 00:19:39.15\00:19:42.30 and natural remedies have been tried but sometimes you 00:19:42.33\00:19:46.51 really need to take certain medications to help the mom 00:19:46.54\00:19:50.83 in depression and/or infection, and/or whatever problems she has 00:19:50.86\00:19:56.82 Medications that can go into the milk and go to the baby 00:19:56.85\00:20:00.67 and that may affect the baby, 00:20:00.70\00:20:03.21 the baby is not supposed to be breastfeeding. 00:20:03.24\00:20:06.73 So the conditions of the mother that may affect the baby 00:20:06.76\00:20:10.88 that a mother does to herself that may affect the baby 00:20:10.91\00:20:14.36 or the mother's illnesses that might affect the baby, 00:20:14.39\00:20:18.40 then the baby may NOT be breastfeeding from the mom. 00:20:18.43\00:20:22.81 There is a rare condition, and the only reason I know 00:20:22.84\00:20:25.17 about it is because I developed it... 00:20:25.20\00:20:26.98 It's called "Raynaud-like syndrome" 00:20:27.01\00:20:29.88 and that was very devastating to me that I wasn't able to 00:20:29.91\00:20:33.28 continue breastfeeding my baby, 00:20:33.31\00:20:35.17 but I was able to use a pump like you, yourself, 00:20:35.20\00:20:37.82 and I just want to mention to some of our viewers, 00:20:37.85\00:20:40.24 if that has been an issue for you and you've not been able to, 00:20:40.27\00:20:43.01 we want to just encourage you that God will bless you when 00:20:43.04\00:20:46.41 you're doing the best that you can for your baby. 00:20:46.44\00:20:48.57 And I was able to put my baby on a very healthy soy formula 00:20:48.60\00:20:52.25 and he is still very healthy now 00:20:52.28\00:20:54.11 and so I'm very thankful for that. 00:20:54.14\00:20:55.94 And I believe He will do that, when we do the best 00:20:55.97\00:20:58.41 with what we have available and if, for some reason 00:20:58.44\00:21:00.49 you can't breastfeed, the Lord 00:21:00.52\00:21:02.13 is going to bless you in many other ways, 00:21:02.16\00:21:03.91 and He will take care of YOUR health and your baby's health. 00:21:03.94\00:21:07.43 So, Dr. Cherie Lou, is there any other information 00:21:07.46\00:21:11.19 in terms of natural remedies that can help INCREASE 00:21:11.22\00:21:14.82 breast milk flow if we're having trouble producing enough milk 00:21:14.85\00:21:19.30 for the baby. 00:21:19.33\00:21:21.10 Oh, so breast milk is produced by proper latching on - 00:21:21.13\00:21:24.82 the position of the mouth on the mother's breast, okay? 00:21:24.85\00:21:28.10 So if you already have that and the milk is not really 00:21:28.13\00:21:31.31 coming down, maybe you're not drinking enough water? 00:21:31.34\00:21:34.04 You know - many times, really - before breastfeeding, 00:21:34.07\00:21:38.28 is started - initiated, the mother should drink water; 00:21:38.31\00:21:43.28 at least a glass of water and water should be there. 00:21:43.31\00:21:46.67 Have you ever tried breastfeeding and you've 00:21:46.70\00:21:49.08 become thirsty in the middle of your breastfeeding? 00:21:49.11\00:21:51.37 Many women tell me that. 00:21:51.40\00:21:53.12 So it's helpful for you to drink water first, 00:21:53.15\00:21:58.74 and then drink water in the middle of your breastfeeding. 00:21:58.77\00:22:02.68 We have, back home - there are certain foods that you can 00:22:02.71\00:22:07.79 ...The elderly come and bring the breastfeeding mom and say, 00:22:07.82\00:22:11.96 "This is going to help you" 00:22:11.99\00:22:13.79 One of them is "Moringa," you know Moringa? 00:22:13.82\00:22:16.17 Have you heard of Moringa? Yes 00:22:16.20\00:22:17.91 It's a very, very good... it's a food. 00:22:17.94\00:22:21.18 We call it "Malunggay" in the Philippines. 00:22:21.21\00:22:24.31 Oh Malunggay... Malunggay - yes 00:22:24.34\00:22:26.59 It's the green leaf - Yes, the green leaf 00:22:26.62\00:22:28.70 That's "Moringa" in the scientific name. 00:22:28.73\00:22:33.01 But it is like a "secretagogue" 00:22:33.04\00:22:36.63 ...It helps your breasts produce milk. 00:22:36.66\00:22:38.84 Now, is this available here in the U.S.? 00:22:38.87\00:22:40.86 Oh, they can get Moringa from natural stores. 00:22:40.89\00:22:46.34 It's not only Moringa that can help you produce... 00:22:46.37\00:22:48.87 Really what is important on top of that is - 00:22:48.90\00:22:51.08 The elderly would come and bring 00:22:51.11\00:22:52.65 us this Moringa SOUP with water in it. 00:22:52.68\00:22:57.33 So really, it's important for the mother to be hydrated. 00:22:57.36\00:23:01.17 And it is important for the mother NOT to drink coffee, 00:23:01.20\00:23:06.16 not to drink Coke or any caffeine-like things. 00:23:06.19\00:23:12.37 My friend - oh, she was suffering so hard. 00:23:12.40\00:23:14.99 I was wondering why she couldn't sleep! 00:23:15.02\00:23:17.75 Because I could sleep, but I was not breastfeeding 00:23:17.78\00:23:21.26 my baby but she was breastfeeding her baby, 00:23:21.29\00:23:23.96 and she couldn't sleep. 00:23:23.99\00:23:26.06 Well the reason was she was drinking Coke 00:23:26.09\00:23:28.78 prior to bedtime and the Coke went to the baby... 00:23:28.81\00:23:32.92 And if you can stay awake, your baby will be awake too. 00:23:32.95\00:23:36.94 Then the baby was awake all the time, 00:23:36.97\00:23:39.05 and I told her - "What were you doing?" 00:23:39.08\00:23:41.46 Oh, she drank this Coke because 00:23:41.49\00:23:44.36 she wanted to stay awake to take care of her baby. 00:23:44.40\00:23:46.93 Unfortunately, her baby stayed awake with her! 00:23:46.97\00:23:49.47 Okay, so avoid the stimulants, avoid things... 00:23:49.50\00:23:51.78 Because whatever affects you is going to affect your baby 00:23:51.81\00:23:53.88 the same way. Yes 00:23:53.91\00:23:55.93 Now, I heard that using oatmeal can actually really help 00:23:55.96\00:23:59.04 increase the breast milk. Fascinating! 00:23:59.07\00:24:02.34 EASY - EASY and readily available, 00:24:02.37\00:24:04.91 you don't need to go get it. That's true 00:24:04.94\00:24:06.31 So you should just eat a bowl of oatmeal every day? YES 00:24:06.34\00:24:10.49 And drink some oat MILK? Uh ha... 00:24:10.52\00:24:12.21 Okay, rather than going for the dairy milk, have the oat milk. 00:24:12.24\00:24:15.45 You can get that from stores. 00:24:15.48\00:24:16.85 Very rich too, in nutrients. 00:24:16.88\00:24:18.73 Now, if for any reason, she needs to discontinue 00:24:18.76\00:24:21.96 breastfeeding, are there any herbal agents that can help her 00:24:21.99\00:24:25.72 to be able to discontinue and stop the production 00:24:25.75\00:24:29.28 without there being any negative side-effects? 00:24:29.31\00:24:31.25 I believe there are a lot, the same way as 00:24:31.28\00:24:34.19 you would want herbs to help you have more milk, 00:24:34.22\00:24:38.21 you can also use herbs to help you have lesser milk 00:24:38.24\00:24:44.01 from day-to-day until you finally stop breastfeeding... 00:24:44.04\00:24:47.18 because of conditions that you cannot breastfeed, 00:24:47.21\00:24:50.00 and you don't want to have mastitis 00:24:50.03\00:24:52.20 or engorged breasts persistently... 00:24:52.23\00:24:54.56 And red sage is one that helps a lot and has been 00:24:54.59\00:24:59.39 proven to help many women who have to stop breastfeeding 00:24:59.42\00:25:03.68 And also Vitex - they have made studies that Vitex in a 00:25:03.71\00:25:08.13 HIGH dose can help bring down prolactin levels; and therefore, 00:25:08.16\00:25:13.58 the production of milk diminished. 00:25:13.61\00:25:16.75 So you have to be careful though because when you do this, 00:25:16.78\00:25:19.57 the next thing you know, you are fertile, 00:25:19.60\00:25:21.16 and you need time to be taking care of your baby, 00:25:21.19\00:25:24.25 not getting pregnant again. 00:25:24.28\00:25:25.84 Oh that's a good point! These herbs will make you 00:25:25.87\00:25:28.65 fertile so you have to be careful. 00:25:28.68\00:25:30.98 So breastfeeding is a natural contraceptive, 00:25:31.01\00:25:33.75 is that what you are implying? 00:25:33.78\00:25:35.22 It IS a natural contraceptive. 00:25:35.25\00:25:38.34 You have to be breastfeeding consistently, okay? 00:25:38.37\00:25:42.88 ...Every 2 hours, like 10-15 minutes on each breast. 00:25:42.91\00:25:48.15 If you don't breastfeed that frequency, that duration... 00:25:48.18\00:25:53.11 Let's say when the baby starts to eat, around 3-4 months... 00:25:53.14\00:25:58.91 You start feeding the baby with food; 00:25:58.94\00:26:01.71 the baby is not going to latch on your breast 00:26:01.74\00:26:03.88 that frequently anymore. 00:26:03.91\00:26:05.28 When you quit this frequency of every 2 hours, 00:26:05.31\00:26:12.95 you will have a chance to go back to your normal ovulatory 00:26:12.98\00:26:17.99 pattern and you can get pregnant. 00:26:18.02\00:26:20.66 So that's why there are some mothers who... 00:26:20.69\00:26:22.83 "I was breastfeeding - how come I became pregnant?" 00:26:22.86\00:26:26.01 It's because of the decreased frequency of the breastfeeding. 00:26:26.04\00:26:30.00 Okay, I hope everybody got that... 00:26:30.03\00:26:32.45 Breastfeeding IS a natural way of contraception, 00:26:32.48\00:26:38.02 but there IS a requirement... 00:26:38.05\00:26:40.07 You are supposed to have THAT frequency 00:26:40.10\00:26:42.29 and THAT duration of breastfeeding. 00:26:42.32\00:26:44.38 Okay, thank you. 00:26:44.41\00:26:45.83 Please tell us a little bit about the psychological 00:26:45.86\00:26:48.42 component to breastfeeding as well. 00:26:48.45\00:26:50.09 I think you have your own experience with this. 00:26:50.12\00:26:52.33 I don't want to patronize myself but where else can we learn 00:26:52.36\00:26:57.32 but from our own experiences. Absolutely! 00:26:57.35\00:27:00.82 I couldn't breastfeed my baby normally because he had problems 00:27:00.85\00:27:06.06 But, then the doctor had told me that I should give my baby 00:27:06.09\00:27:09.63 the colostrum, so I tried and I got milk. 00:27:09.66\00:27:12.37 I got enough for my baby's milk from day 1 to day 3, 00:27:12.40\00:27:18.48 but because of my baby's problems, physical abnormalities 00:27:18.51\00:27:24.08 the doctors had told me unfortunately, everybody, 00:27:24.11\00:27:29.19 4 of them, 5 of them told me that my baby would not survive 00:27:29.22\00:27:34.72 As soon as they told me that, I could not have milk anymore. 00:27:34.75\00:27:39.67 I'm so sorry to hear that, 00:27:39.70\00:27:42.04 but he was able to survive, that's the good news, 00:27:42.07\00:27:44.57 and you were able to continue feeding him with other things. 00:27:44.60\00:27:47.78 So the Lord provided and for those of you that are 00:27:47.81\00:27:50.43 watching today, we hope you've learned something about 00:27:50.46\00:27:52.41 breastfeeding, and remember that the Lord 00:27:52.44\00:27:54.20 IS going to make up for it if you're not able to do it, 00:27:54.23\00:27:57.16 and if you are, it's an extra blessing. 00:27:57.19\00:27:59.90 Just enjoy your baby and enjoy loving him 00:27:59.93\00:28:02.33 whether you are able to breastfeed or not. 00:28:02.36\00:28:04.73
