Welcome to "Wonderfully Made" 00:00:35.34\00:00:37.09 I'm Amy Wellard with the 00:00:37.12\00:00:38.49 Wildwood Lifestyle Center and Hospital, 00:00:38.52\00:00:40.38 and today our topic in our 00:00:40.41\00:00:41.91 Vibrant Health for Women's series is cervical cancer... 00:00:41.94\00:00:46.03 And with me today in the studio is Dr. Cherie Lou Fernandez 00:00:46.06\00:00:49.15 Welcome! Thank you, glad to be here 00:00:49.18\00:00:52.45 Our subject - cervical cancer, is actually affecting 00:00:52.48\00:00:55.49 16,000- the statistics say 00:00:55.52\00:00:57.97 of women in America every year with about 5,000 deaths. 00:00:58.00\00:01:02.52 It's actually quite a very large problem for many women, 00:01:02.55\00:01:07.47 and it's actually the third most commonly diagnosed cancer 00:01:07.50\00:01:10.38 after lung and breast... Yes 00:01:10.41\00:01:11.97 So tell us, is it on the rise, along with all the other 00:01:12.00\00:01:15.05 lifestyle conditions or is it being controlled? 00:01:15.08\00:01:18.03 Good news... because of the use of the Pap smear, 00:01:18.06\00:01:22.64 ...Papanicolaou smear, you would call that, 00:01:22.67\00:01:25.72 and making it readily available for everybody, 00:01:25.75\00:01:28.83 and educating people on the use of Papanicolaou smear, 00:01:28.86\00:01:33.13 the cervical cancer is caught early, 00:01:33.16\00:01:36.85 and problems associated with 00:01:36.88\00:01:40.25 EARLY cervical cancer is caught earlier. 00:01:40.28\00:01:43.02 So then, you don't necessarily go into cervical cancer 00:01:43.05\00:01:46.78 because you stop it at its beginning... 00:01:46.81\00:01:50.40 So because of the Papanicolaou smear, 00:01:50.43\00:01:52.68 cervical cancer seems to be coming down. 00:01:52.71\00:01:54.78 So, can you tell us - what is the Pap smear exactly? 00:01:54.81\00:01:58.62 Well the Pap smear can be done in any other part of the body 00:01:58.65\00:02:02.90 like the buccal mucosa and other mucosa. 00:02:02.93\00:02:07.40 It's not right, but it is usually 00:02:07.43\00:02:10.02 used down there for the cervix. 00:02:10.05\00:02:12.57 They take a scraping of the cervix and/or inside the cervix 00:02:12.61\00:02:17.40 and the vaginal pool and smear it on the slide 00:02:17.43\00:02:21.04 and they stain it with a stain invented by Mr. Papanicolaou... 00:02:21.07\00:02:27.88 That's why it's the Papanicolaou smear... 00:02:27.91\00:02:29.59 And when you look into it, 00:02:29.62\00:02:30.99 you see abnormal cells if there were abnormal cells. 00:02:31.02\00:02:34.28 And so it's like a screening test to see whether 00:02:34.31\00:02:41.53 you have abnormal cells... precancerous cells, 00:02:41.56\00:02:45.00 but it's not really mainly, although it's used as a 00:02:45.03\00:02:49.42 cancer screening test... it does not only check for cancer, 00:02:49.45\00:02:54.18 it checks for infections and hormonal imbalances as well. 00:02:54.21\00:02:58.91 So how effective is it in actually preventing 00:02:58.94\00:03:01.91 death from cervical cancer? 00:03:01.94\00:03:03.80 It is really very effective because even if there are 00:03:03.83\00:03:06.99 false-negatives, you can catch cervical cancer 00:03:07.02\00:03:10.18 because cervical cancer is a slow-growing cancer... 00:03:10.21\00:03:14.38 actually 15 years before you have it. 00:03:14.41\00:03:18.08 So if you have your cervical smear, even if you missed a year 00:03:18.11\00:03:21.74 ...if you do it every year thereafter, 00:03:21.77\00:03:24.18 because of the slow growth of cervical cancer, 00:03:24.21\00:03:26.92 you will catch it. 00:03:26.95\00:03:29.10 The thing is, you HAVE to have Pap smears every year. 00:03:29.13\00:03:32.70 Okay now, I wanted to ask you that... 00:03:32.73\00:03:34.82 You have to have Pap smears every year 00:03:34.85\00:03:37.10 if you are sexually active, or even if you're not? 00:03:37.13\00:03:40.73 As soon as you start being sexually active, 00:03:40.76\00:03:45.49 or if you're not sexually active, 00:03:45.52\00:03:47.02 but you come into the reproductive years, 00:03:47.05\00:03:48.97 maybe 18-19, then you start having the Pap smear. 00:03:49.00\00:03:54.50 So what is actually causing the cancer in itself? 00:03:54.53\00:03:58.41 It's a virus... that causes it? 00:03:58.44\00:04:00.65 Well, cervical cancer the majority of the time, 00:04:00.68\00:04:04.47 it's 90+% a very, very small amount 00:04:04.50\00:04:09.72 for cancer that's not caused by HPV. 00:04:09.75\00:04:14.37 The majority of cancers are caused by human papillomavirus. 00:04:14.40\00:04:18.76 That's the HPV... That's the HPV virus. 00:04:18.79\00:04:21.76 That is what causes cervical cancer. 00:04:21.79\00:04:24.07 Okay, and most viruses manifest themselves 00:04:24.10\00:04:27.23 in manifestations on the skin... 00:04:27.26\00:04:30.53 Is that right, when it comes to this virus? Yes 00:04:30.56\00:04:33.27 HPV actually is a type of virus that has several strains. 00:04:33.30\00:04:40.12 You have even a little wart on your hand is HPV. 00:04:40.15\00:04:45.52 But there are different HPV strains that 00:04:45.55\00:04:49.25 go to different parts of the body, 00:04:49.28\00:04:51.26 and even in the cervix, you have different kinds of 00:04:51.29\00:04:54.96 HPV strains... 00:04:54.99\00:04:57.62 You have the low risk for cancer strains, 00:04:57.65\00:05:00.79 and you have the high risk for cancer strains. 00:05:00.82\00:05:03.90 So, you have different kinds of strains that - 00:05:03.93\00:05:07.28 you might have a wart even in the vaginal area 00:05:07.31\00:05:11.75 but you may not have cancer depending on what strain you got 00:05:11.78\00:05:16.71 So just because you have a wart, doesn't mean that 00:05:16.74\00:05:19.49 you're necessarily going to get cancer. 00:05:19.52\00:05:21.22 There is a probability - you might have both... 00:05:21.25\00:05:24.47 but that means you are not really sure what you have. 00:05:24.50\00:05:28.22 Okay, and you may have no warts at all, 00:05:28.25\00:05:30.96 and yet still developing cancer- And still have the cancer 00:05:30.99\00:05:33.59 Now in 2006, there was a vaccine that was approved 00:05:33.62\00:05:37.55 to prevent cervical cancer... 00:05:37.58\00:05:39.44 Can you comment on that? 00:05:39.47\00:05:40.84 Okay yes, that is the vaccine "Gardasil" 00:05:40.87\00:05:43.40 It's recommended for young girls, 00:05:43.43\00:05:47.03 as soon as they enter into their menarche. 00:05:47.06\00:05:49.74 They do the Gardasil because maybe it's because of the 00:05:49.77\00:05:53.80 permissive society, they think the little girl at 13 00:05:53.83\00:05:57.06 would be sexually active. 00:05:57.09\00:06:01.44 So maybe they are thinking to PREVENT this young girl 00:06:01.47\00:06:06.40 from having cervical cancer later. 00:06:06.43\00:06:09.12 However, because of the large amount... 00:06:09.15\00:06:15.44 I mean so many strains of the high risk cervical HPV 00:06:15.47\00:06:21.71 causing cancer... 00:06:21.74\00:06:24.16 Gardasil has only the 2 most virulent strains, 00:06:24.19\00:06:29.70 but there are over 12 of the most virulent strains... 00:06:29.73\00:06:33.33 So Gardasil really is not covering everything. 00:06:33.36\00:06:38.66 The real thing really is that everybody is supposed to 00:06:38.69\00:06:42.50 practice abstinence. 00:06:42.53\00:06:43.90 Okay so you basically summed up the complete prevention there 00:06:43.93\00:06:49.17 Yeah... I'm sorry but yes. 00:06:49.20\00:06:52.71 But for married couples it's purity in marriage, 00:06:52.74\00:06:56.16 and outside of marriage. 00:06:56.19\00:06:57.83 Faithfulness to one partner can really minimize 00:06:57.86\00:07:00.69 and that begins WAY before marriage... 00:07:00.72\00:07:02.53 preparing yourself to marry involves faithfulness 00:07:02.56\00:07:06.02 and complete abstinence prior to marriage. 00:07:06.05\00:07:08.70 So is this cancer specifically linked to sexual behavior? 00:07:08.73\00:07:15.00 Yes - because of the HPV, it is specifically linked 00:07:15.03\00:07:19.25 to sexual behavior, but if you were somebody 00:07:19.28\00:07:22.62 who was really pure, you were a lady who was pure, 00:07:22.65\00:07:27.65 and you married a pure guy, 00:07:27.68\00:07:31.00 somebody who has NEVER had any sexual intercourse with 00:07:31.03\00:07:35.35 ANYBODY - pure person, pure you, 00:07:35.38\00:07:37.93 you will NEVER get... 00:07:37.96\00:07:40.01 I mean, the risk of developing cancer is very small, 00:07:40.04\00:07:45.27 hardly no more, but even if you were a pure lady, 00:07:45.30\00:07:50.94 but you married a guy who ran around early in his life, 00:07:50.97\00:07:55.42 and even if he marries you, but he wasn't pure one time 00:07:55.45\00:08:00.02 and he had it... he took it, he'll bring it to you 00:08:00.05\00:08:02.91 and there is a chance for you to have it. 00:08:02.94\00:08:05.33 However, if you take care of yourself, 00:08:05.36\00:08:08.73 you probably won't get it. 00:08:08.76\00:08:10.71 And I suppose you could apply that to another stage in life... 00:08:10.74\00:08:14.04 For example, if a wife dies of cervical cancer, 00:08:14.07\00:08:18.33 the husband himself would be a carrier of the HPV, 00:08:18.36\00:08:21.84 and could pass that to a future wife. Yes, he could 00:08:21.87\00:08:26.02 So then if that would be, it would be just fair for him 00:08:26.05\00:08:28.88 to tell his wife that we should 00:08:28.91\00:08:30.55 be both healthy in order for you not to get it. 00:08:30.58\00:08:33.61 Okay, so he could have passed it on to her, 00:08:33.64\00:08:35.73 but she doesn't need to actually GET the developed cancer. 00:08:35.76\00:08:38.47 If she takes care because if you catch it early 00:08:38.50\00:08:41.30 you won't have it because you can easily take care of it. 00:08:41.33\00:08:45.04 That's great... So what are the other 00:08:45.07\00:08:46.96 risk factors that make some women or some socioeconomic 00:08:46.99\00:08:50.79 groups of women more at risk than others? 00:08:50.82\00:08:53.67 First is poor socioeconomic status. 00:08:53.70\00:08:58.21 Well, I don't want to talk so much on that... 00:08:58.24\00:09:01.23 it speaks for itself. 00:09:01.26\00:09:02.81 But you could say - women who are from 45 to 50-60 years old 00:09:02.84\00:09:09.80 ...because the before the early 60s, they had a drug 00:09:09.83\00:09:14.24 which is "DES" or diethylstilbestrol 00:09:14.27\00:09:19.17 ...that they gave to women who had signs and symptoms of 00:09:19.20\00:09:24.64 miscarriage. 00:09:24.67\00:09:26.04 So they would give this to a pregnant woman 00:09:26.07\00:09:28.19 who was having threatened abortion... DES 00:09:28.22\00:09:31.21 It would apparently hold the pregnancy from aborting, 00:09:31.24\00:09:35.25 but the little baby that was inside would be affected 00:09:35.28\00:09:40.06 by the DES, and it would make her 00:09:40.09\00:09:42.24 in the future, prone to develop cervical cancer. Really? 00:09:42.27\00:09:46.81 Was there anything that she 00:09:46.84\00:09:48.56 do about that later in life? 00:09:48.59\00:09:50.63 Oh yes, take care of herself by having a Pap smear. 00:09:50.66\00:09:53.69 Okay, wonderful. 00:09:53.72\00:09:55.49 So how is cervical cancer manifest once it has 00:09:55.52\00:09:58.93 got into the more advanced stages - what are the symptoms? 00:09:58.96\00:10:02.23 Oh, many times cervical cancer does not manifest itself, 00:10:02.26\00:10:07.37 and it will only manifest too late. 00:10:07.40\00:10:10.42 That's why I cannot overemphasize the importance 00:10:10.45\00:10:13.77 of really having your Pap smear regularly. 00:10:13.80\00:10:17.41 It's asymptomatic for a long time. 00:10:17.44\00:10:21.21 But if there were signs and symptoms that occur late, 00:10:21.24\00:10:26.88 they would include abnormal vaginal bleeding. 00:10:26.91\00:10:31.06 So the vagina bleeds between menses, 00:10:31.09\00:10:33.71 or maybe you're already menopaused, 00:10:33.74\00:10:36.10 and you start bleeding or maybe after 00:10:36.13\00:10:38.96 a sexual intercourse you would have bleeding. 00:10:38.99\00:10:42.28 This bleeding where you are not supposed to be bleeding 00:10:42.31\00:10:45.71 is a very, very strong sign of cervical cancer. 00:10:45.74\00:10:50.50 And, you could have continuous vaginal discharge... 00:10:50.53\00:10:56.86 A discharge ALL the time, you know... 00:10:56.89\00:11:00.37 You would have to always wear panty liners. 00:11:00.40\00:11:03.48 The discharge could be clear or copious. 00:11:03.51\00:11:06.75 It could be pink, brown, bloody, frank bloody, 00:11:06.78\00:11:10.32 but they are definitely foul-smelling. 00:11:10.35\00:11:13.11 I could remember when I was in internship back years ago 00:11:13.14\00:11:17.07 when I was in my internship for early medicine, 00:11:17.10\00:11:20.60 when I would go into the cancer pavilion, 00:11:20.63\00:11:24.55 I would know that even if I would blindfold myself, 00:11:24.58\00:11:27.84 I would know that I was close to the cervical cancer ward. 00:11:27.87\00:11:32.95 It's a specific smell that is just so cervical cancer. 00:11:32.98\00:11:38.92 When I have a patient that comes into my office 00:11:38.95\00:11:41.62 I just know the whiff, the breeze that she brings. 00:11:41.65\00:11:45.65 Oh... this smells like cervical cancer and that's the discharge. 00:11:45.68\00:11:50.19 So has the cancer already spread to other areas? 00:11:50.22\00:11:54.24 Sort of yes, because it is already... 00:11:54.27\00:11:57.81 depends on how it spreads... 00:11:57.84\00:11:59.21 It can spread down or it can spread up; 00:11:59.24\00:12:00.71 it can spread sideways, 00:12:00.74\00:12:02.11 but it is one of the manifestations, 00:12:02.14\00:12:06.12 and menses also become heavier and longer than usual. 00:12:06.15\00:12:11.80 So how could you tell how advanced a woman is? 00:12:11.83\00:12:15.06 What testing is there? 00:12:15.09\00:12:17.40 First and foremost, you do the Pap smear. 00:12:17.43\00:12:21.61 And the Pap smear can catch whether you have the 00:12:21.64\00:12:26.97 precancerous stage. 00:12:27.00\00:12:29.01 The Pap smear catches the precancerous stage. 00:12:29.04\00:12:31.95 You call that "dysplasia"... 00:12:31.98\00:12:34.28 "dys" meaning abnormal and "plasia" meaning growth. 00:12:34.31\00:12:37.02 So abnormal growth - dysplasia. 00:12:37.05\00:12:39.28 So you have mild dysplasia - meaning one-third of the 00:12:39.31\00:12:43.49 cervical lining is abnormal. 00:12:43.52\00:12:46.03 You have moderate dysplasia - meaning around two-thirds 00:12:46.06\00:12:49.66 of the lining of your cervix is affected or abnormal. 00:12:49.69\00:12:53.52 And you have SEVERE dysplasia - meaning the WHOLE layer 00:12:53.55\00:12:58.37 of the lining of your cervix is affected... it's SEVERE 00:12:58.40\00:13:02.16 So you have ALL abnormal cells. 00:13:02.19\00:13:04.18 It's just dysplasia but you get 1 cell off this dysplasia 00:13:04.21\00:13:09.76 ...a patient with dysplasia and you get a cell off one from a 00:13:09.79\00:13:14.40 frank cervical cancer... 00:13:14.43\00:13:16.47 You look at it under the microscope... they are the same. 00:13:16.50\00:13:20.55 So cervical cancer and dysplasia have the same kinds of cells, 00:13:20.58\00:13:24.82 BUT the amount of cells - you would say... 00:13:24.85\00:13:29.37 Mild is one-third, moderate is two-thirds, 00:13:29.40\00:13:32.10 and severe. 00:13:32.13\00:13:34.20 It's like saying that you have your entire lining cancerous. 00:13:34.23\00:13:38.67 They call that "carcinoma in situ" 00:13:38.70\00:13:42.26 just localized or maybe you could say "stage 0 cancer" 00:13:42.30\00:13:47.52 if you could say... it's just localized. 00:13:47.55\00:13:50.54 So when you talk about stage 0 00:13:50.57\00:13:53.06 that sounds really hopeful to me because we often hear about 00:13:53.09\00:13:56.00 stage IV and V 00:13:56.03\00:13:57.95 So a stage 0, this precancerous almost condition, 00:13:57.98\00:14:01.56 is that curable? 00:14:01.59\00:14:03.49 VERY curable... it is very curable. 00:14:03.52\00:14:07.86 So what are your chances of still being alive after 00:14:07.89\00:14:10.74 5 years of having cancer... 00:14:10.77\00:14:13.47 Let's say you had severe dysplasia, 00:14:13.50\00:14:16.77 you can have further tests. 00:14:16.80\00:14:20.72 You have the colposcopy... it's like a microscope that they 00:14:20.75\00:14:26.79 examine your vagina and they have a microscope 00:14:26.82\00:14:29.04 that focuses on your cervix and they can per se... SEE 00:14:29.07\00:14:32.68 how your cervix is affected. 00:14:32.71\00:14:35.35 And then they know whether you can take out locally 00:14:35.38\00:14:40.27 the area that is affected. 00:14:40.30\00:14:42.20 You call that the "cone biopsy" 00:14:42.23\00:14:44.12 So they make a cone - inside is the apex, here is the base... 00:14:44.15\00:14:48.14 They make a cone and take out the cervix like this 00:14:48.17\00:14:50.58 because there are some women - they're scared... 00:14:50.61\00:14:53.01 Yes - they have cervical SEVERE dysplasia, 00:14:53.04\00:14:55.88 and you can say "cancer" already, but it's just contained 00:14:55.91\00:14:59.79 But they still want to have kids; 00:14:59.82\00:15:01.41 they don't want their cervix taken out. 00:15:01.44\00:15:03.68 So you have your cone biopsy 00:15:03.71\00:15:05.55 so that you still have your uterus, 00:15:05.58\00:15:07.75 or you can have your MRI or your PET scan 00:15:07.78\00:15:10.36 or your CAT scan if you would want to see whether 00:15:10.39\00:15:13.35 you have had spread around the... 00:15:13.38\00:15:17.55 Okay, so let's talk about the different types of cancer cells 00:15:17.58\00:15:22.66 or rather the growth of the cancer cell, 00:15:22.69\00:15:24.67 and the different facets to this disease process, 00:15:24.70\00:15:28.88 and how we can conquer each facet with lifestyle. 00:15:28.91\00:15:31.07 Yes, it is important that we, again, know our enemy... 00:15:31.10\00:15:36.69 When we know our enemy it's much, much easier 00:15:36.72\00:15:38.94 for us to conquer the enemy. 00:15:38.97\00:15:40.63 So in the management of cancer, 00:15:40.66\00:15:43.04 we have 5 things to take into consideration. 00:15:43.07\00:15:48.15 Cancer actually is a multiple myriad of problems in your body 00:15:48.18\00:15:52.86 manifesting as cancer and mainly it's the gene 00:15:52.89\00:15:56.40 that's affected by free radicals... 00:15:56.43\00:15:59.92 A free radical damage to your cell and/or your DNA 00:15:59.95\00:16:03.23 causing abnormal cells. 00:16:03.26\00:16:04.92 If it is a free radical, you fight it with antioxidants. 00:16:04.95\00:16:08.68 So antioxidants... vitamin A, C and E, 00:16:08.71\00:16:11.93 and ashwagandha herb and schisandra - another herb, 00:16:11.96\00:16:16.25 and GARLIC - a very, very STRONG and POTENT antioxidant 00:16:16.28\00:16:22.25 which I really have an experience with... 00:16:22.28\00:16:25.51 A friend of mine had a sister with stage IV cancer, 00:16:25.54\00:16:29.85 and she was given a short time to live... 00:16:29.88\00:16:32.13 that's SEVERAL years ago and she's still alive now! 00:16:32.16\00:16:36.64 What she does - is she reeks with garlic. 00:16:36.67\00:16:39.30 She finishes one pound of garlic a WEEK! 00:16:39.33\00:16:42.45 A WEEK - she... one pound of garlic a WEEK! 00:16:42.48\00:16:45.96 But she is alive! 00:16:45.99\00:16:47.36 Better to smell of garlic than be dead. 00:16:47.39\00:16:49.49 She still has the cancer there but it has not cost her her life 00:16:49.52\00:16:54.58 That's for free radical damage. 00:16:54.61\00:16:56.64 But then you have inflammation. 00:16:56.67\00:16:58.28 Inflammation is like the gas 00:16:58.31\00:17:00.13 that makes the cancer GO and GROW... 00:17:00.16\00:17:02.85 So turmeric is one of the STRONG anti-inflammatory, 00:17:02.88\00:17:08.95 and it's food besides - it's a spice. 00:17:08.98\00:17:12.12 You don't have to go somewhere looking for it, it's in 00:17:12.15\00:17:16.19 Wal-Mart; there's turmeric in the spice section. 00:17:16.22\00:17:18.37 And you can use a lot of turmeric in your food. 00:17:18.40\00:17:23.11 Then work on your immunity because it will be the one 00:17:23.14\00:17:28.07 to FIGHT your cancer... 00:17:28.10\00:17:29.47 And we have this, what you say, "angiogenesis" 00:17:29.50\00:17:33.29 It's a big term... "angio" meaning - blood vessels, 00:17:33.32\00:17:37.27 and "genesis" meaning growth. 00:17:37.30\00:17:39.57 A cancer will not grow bigger and will not spread 00:17:39.60\00:17:43.58 if there are no blood vessels that are feeding it. 00:17:43.61\00:17:48.36 So if you have antiangiogenesis, 00:17:48.39\00:17:53.16 meaning you get food or substances that keep 00:17:53.19\00:17:57.44 blood vessels from growing into it, 00:17:57.47\00:18:00.27 the cells, of course, will die; 00:18:00.30\00:18:02.49 no nourishment and so they die. 00:18:02.52\00:18:05.69 Well, you see the cells, per cell will call for angiogenesis. 00:18:05.72\00:18:09.73 A cancer cell is a rogue cell. 00:18:09.76\00:18:12.24 It has a government of its own. 00:18:12.27\00:18:15.16 It will do what it wants to do because it's 00:18:15.19\00:18:17.34 not the same as the other normal cells. 00:18:17.37\00:18:19.48 So this rogue cell calls for new blood vessels towards it. 00:18:19.51\00:18:24.92 Praise the Lord... because turmeric is a very strong 00:18:24.95\00:18:28.23 antiangiogenesis agent. 00:18:28.26\00:18:33.45 It's been a lot of experience - experiments are coming up, 00:18:33.48\00:18:37.49 and studies are coming up that turmeric is very good, 00:18:37.52\00:18:40.51 for antiangiogenesis... How would you actually 00:18:40.54\00:18:43.00 take that turmeric? 00:18:43.03\00:18:44.40 You would just buy the culinary turmeric from the super store 00:18:44.43\00:18:46.58 and just add it to your food 00:18:46.61\00:18:47.98 or mix it in some milk and drink it or... 00:18:48.01\00:18:49.56 One to 2 teaspoons, 2-3 times a day. 00:18:49.59\00:18:53.09 Okay... Yes, you could mix it... 00:18:53.12\00:18:55.87 I found out that it tastes bad. 00:18:55.90\00:18:58.62 It tastes bad - you know, the pungent smell and everything 00:18:58.65\00:19:01.55 and it makes your teeth yellow. 00:19:01.58\00:19:04.10 But you can do things to keep your teeth from turning yellow, 00:19:04.13\00:19:07.70 but anyway, if you put it in pineapple juice, 00:19:07.73\00:19:12.39 it tastes good! 00:19:12.42\00:19:14.16 But then you have to put it in a straw, a big straw, 00:19:14.19\00:19:17.62 and straight down the back of your mouth 00:19:17.65\00:19:19.93 so that it doesn't go to your teeth and stain it yellow. 00:19:19.96\00:19:22.59 And all the good colors, the different rainbow colors 00:19:22.62\00:19:26.80 of food - the berries with dark colors, 00:19:26.83\00:19:30.41 and vegetables with dark colors, 00:19:30.44\00:19:31.87 they're anthocyanin-rich. 00:19:31.90\00:19:34.37 They are antiangiogenesis. 00:19:34.40\00:19:37.43 Garlic is again, fruits and vegetables - 00:19:37.46\00:19:40.66 most of them have antiangiogenesis, 00:19:40.69\00:19:42.92 and the last one is telomere. 00:19:42.95\00:19:44.86 Telomere is something to do with the end of the chromosome 00:19:44.89\00:19:48.86 that tells the cell when to die. 00:19:48.89\00:19:51.16 Cancer cells NEVER DIE... 00:19:51.19\00:19:53.27 they just grow and grow and grow and grow. 00:19:53.30\00:19:55.24 Telomere really tells the cell when it should die. 00:19:55.27\00:19:58.35 Then when you do exercise, you do all the natural remedies 00:19:58.38\00:20:06.44 from nutrition, exercise, water, sunshine, vitamin D, 00:20:06.47\00:20:10.43 sleep well, trust in God and you would help the telomere 00:20:10.46\00:20:14.95 work properly and tell the cell... "Okay, let's die" 00:20:14.98\00:20:17.87 And when the cell dies, it doesn't replicate. 00:20:17.90\00:20:20.45 So you're hitting different ways to control 00:20:20.48\00:20:23.37 your cancer that would be really giving you a chance to 00:20:23.40\00:20:28.18 not move from precancerous to cancer. 00:20:28.21\00:20:31.16 And when you talk about exercise - what kind of level? 00:20:31.19\00:20:34.00 Are you talking high impact aerobic-type exercise? 00:20:34.03\00:20:37.28 ...Or just consistent - maybe 5 miles walking a day 00:20:37.31\00:20:41.51 at a gentle pace or... 00:20:41.54\00:20:42.91 Yes, it's important that you do not stress yourself 00:20:42.94\00:20:46.36 when you exercise. 00:20:46.39\00:20:47.76 So if you have never been exercising before, 00:20:47.79\00:20:50.38 you don't climb Mt. Everest! 00:20:50.41\00:20:52.07 In other words, you go slowly... 00:20:52.10\00:20:55.83 First, you start with a mile and then 2 miles. 00:20:55.86\00:20:58.34 Your body will tell you because you won't be huffing and puffing 00:20:58.37\00:21:01.16 ...initially, you would be, but then you walk 00:21:01.19\00:21:03.58 Let's say I'm walking a mile, 00:21:03.61\00:21:08.40 and I'm going to walk it in 30 minutes, 00:21:08.43\00:21:11.34 but next time, I'm going to walk the mile in 15 minutes, 00:21:11.37\00:21:16.22 so I'm going to walk 2 miles this time... 00:21:16.25\00:21:18.26 And as soon as you have adapted to it, 00:21:18.29\00:21:22.77 you're not huffing and puffing, 00:21:22.80\00:21:24.20 you push to 3 miles in 30 minutes. 00:21:24.23\00:21:26.73 You push to 4 miles in 30 minutes. 00:21:26.76\00:21:29.24 Moderate increased but not pushing it too hard, 00:21:29.27\00:21:33.35 because when you... especially heavy, strenuous 00:21:33.38\00:21:37.82 weightlifting, climbing Mt. Everest 00:21:37.85\00:21:40.63 increases your cortisol and cortisol is FRIENDLY to cancer. 00:21:40.66\00:21:44.99 Ah, so if the exercise is making you STRESSED, 00:21:45.02\00:21:48.47 better not do it... It's not going to do good for you. 00:21:48.50\00:21:51.41 Oh that's great, so just the moderate, 00:21:51.44\00:21:53.22 but the balance between the ease and the effort. YES! 00:21:53.25\00:21:55.68 So it is pushing you a little bit but not OVER-STRENUOUS. 00:21:55.71\00:21:59.13 Now, what about the immune enhancers? 00:21:59.16\00:22:01.34 Could you tell us a little bit more about the 00:22:01.37\00:22:03.34 herbs that can really BOOST the immune system. 00:22:03.37\00:22:06.10 Oh, the one I know fairly well is "pau d'arco 00:22:06.13\00:22:10.78 Now the pau d'arco comes from South, 00:22:10.81\00:22:13.17 and aside from garlic, the ones that you have in your kitchen, 00:22:13.20\00:22:18.63 your onions, your garlic, your ginger, your turmeric... 00:22:18.66\00:22:22.38 they are readily available for you. 00:22:22.41\00:22:23.84 You can get pau d'arco, we were talking about 00:22:23.87\00:22:30.58 astragalus... astragalus - yes, 00:22:30.61\00:22:32.76 goldenseal, Echinacea. 00:22:32.79\00:22:35.15 You can do burdock root. 00:22:35.18\00:22:39.01 Those are the ones... Blood purifiers. 00:22:39.04\00:22:41.26 Yes, blood purifiers and immune enhancers. 00:22:41.29\00:22:44.01 And okay, to be sure, always support your liver. 00:22:44.04\00:22:47.81 When you're trying to keep your body at par, 00:22:47.84\00:22:50.80 always support your liver because your liver 00:22:50.83\00:22:53.77 is trying to get rid of all the waste that your body is getting; 00:22:53.80\00:22:58.24 you know, the end products that your body is working 00:22:58.27\00:23:01.41 and having its waste products. 00:23:01.44\00:23:03.42 The liver will catch all that... 00:23:03.45\00:23:05.34 And so help your liver detoxify. With for example... 00:23:05.37\00:23:09.82 With for example - you could say 00:23:09.85\00:23:12.38 milk thistle or dandelion. 00:23:12.41\00:23:15.53 Those are the most common ones that you would use. 00:23:15.56\00:23:19.02 Could I take dandelions out of my garden... 00:23:19.05\00:23:20.78 I have plenty of weeds! I'm sure you could, 00:23:20.81\00:23:22.31 but it's the root! 00:23:22.34\00:23:23.71 It's the ROOT - that's the hard thing to dig up 00:23:23.74\00:23:25.42 so maybe you are better to just buy the root from a herb shop. 00:23:25.45\00:23:28.99 You could! It's FRESH, you're sure that it's organic! 00:23:29.02\00:23:34.14 And you've got the whole phytopharmacy 00:23:34.17\00:23:36.52 in one complete polypharmacy. 00:23:36.55\00:23:39.30 Okay, now you mentioned earlier about sleep. 00:23:39.33\00:23:42.11 Now could you give us the physiology behind 00:23:42.14\00:23:45.07 why it's important, if you have cancer, to get to bed early, 00:23:45.10\00:23:49.38 and when we say "early," what time do we mean? 00:23:49.41\00:23:51.13 Okay, we are counseled that 2 hours before midnight 00:23:51.16\00:23:57.96 is equal to 4 hours AFTER midnight. 00:23:57.99\00:24:01.67 I know everybody has experience that if they went to bed EARLY, 00:24:01.70\00:24:06.32 let's say - 8 o'clock or 9 o'clock, okay? 00:24:06.35\00:24:11.21 When you go to bed at 8 or 9 o'clock, 00:24:11.24\00:24:13.90 then you have a deep sleep, 00:24:13.93\00:24:17.11 you wake up somewhere like 3 or 4 o'clock and it feels like 00:24:17.14\00:24:20.01 you're done! 00:24:20.04\00:24:22.57 You have to wake up! Why is it so? 00:24:22.60\00:24:26.99 And you look at the clock and you say... 00:24:27.02\00:24:28.63 "It's still 3 o'clock, I thought I had slept enough already" 00:24:28.66\00:24:33.09 That means your body has recovered! 00:24:33.12\00:24:35.72 Your body has been able to clean itself. 00:24:35.75\00:24:39.48 Your body has been able to get rid of the toxins. 00:24:39.51\00:24:43.14 Your body is ready to face another day! 00:24:43.17\00:24:45.78 It's because around 9 o'clock, or when the sun comes down... 00:24:45.81\00:24:51.05 At 6 o'clock, let's just say... when the sun comes down, 00:24:51.08\00:24:55.09 your growth hormone and your melatonin starts to increase. 00:24:55.12\00:25:01.60 Now melatonin is VERY important because it is the REPAIR hormone 00:25:01.63\00:25:06.31 So this will help you to repair some cells that are damaged 00:25:06.34\00:25:09.19 by cancer invasion? YES, and the growth hormone ALSO 00:25:09.22\00:25:12.84 It's balanced, you know, you have to get this one 00:25:12.87\00:25:17.57 so that whatever trauma there is in your body, can be repaired. 00:25:17.60\00:25:22.76 So when you get enough of your melatonin, 00:25:22.79\00:25:25.92 and your growth hormone which is 00:25:25.95\00:25:27.84 only there prior to 12 o'clock - before... 00:25:27.87\00:25:31.74 And no more late night internet surfing! 00:25:31.77\00:25:33.73 NO - because if you went to bed past 12 o'clock, 00:25:33.76\00:25:37.97 you slept until 12 o'clock noon, 00:25:38.00\00:25:39.78 and it seems like you've NEVER been able to sleep... 00:25:39.81\00:25:42.66 It's like you want to sleep some more; 00:25:42.69\00:25:45.03 you're not satisfied! 00:25:45.06\00:25:46.52 It's because you didn't get your melatonin. 00:25:46.55\00:25:48.88 You didn't get your growth hormone. 00:25:48.91\00:25:50.72 There's no repair in your body! 00:25:50.75\00:25:52.40 Your body is still... "I'm still... still worse" 00:25:52.43\00:25:55.24 ...The dirt is still there, it has not been cleaned up. 00:25:55.27\00:25:58.16 I have not been able to repair myself. 00:25:58.19\00:26:00.09 So you're tired; so you must go to bed early! 00:26:00.12\00:26:03.31 So there's truth to the old saying - 00:26:03.34\00:26:05.57 "Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man HEALTHY, 00:26:05.60\00:26:09.69 ...wealthy and wise!" 00:26:09.72\00:26:11.52 Maybe not always wealthy, but certainly healthier! 00:26:11.55\00:26:16.06 So, we've mentioned on some of the other shows, Dr. Cherie Lou, 00:26:16.09\00:26:19.52 about vitamin D, and now this has been 00:26:19.55\00:26:22.86 or the lack of it has been implicated in many, many 00:26:22.89\00:26:25.63 different health issues. 00:26:25.66\00:26:27.96 Is it an issue with cervical cancer? 00:26:27.99\00:26:29.88 Oh... for ALL cancers besides. 00:26:29.91\00:26:34.07 Vitamin D ENHANCES the immune system. 00:26:34.10\00:26:37.50 Vitamin D helps all your organs recover faster. 00:26:37.53\00:26:44.35 It's an ESSENTIAL vitamin in EVERY CELL, 00:26:44.38\00:26:50.66 the same way as all cells. 00:26:50.69\00:26:54.42 We thought initially that vitamin D was only for bones, 00:26:54.45\00:27:01.35 but it is MORE, MUCH MORE for cancer. 00:27:01.38\00:27:05.23 You have to have your vitamin D NOT LOWER than 50. 00:27:05.26\00:27:09.89 Somebody said 60... so that would be really helping 00:27:09.92\00:27:14.65 in making your immune system work to par. 00:27:14.68\00:27:16.86 So supplementation would be needed in many cases. 00:27:16.89\00:27:18.47 Sunshine is better, although if you need it 00:27:20.87\00:27:23.56 start now, then you can do the vitamin D supplementation. 00:27:23.59\00:27:27.18 Okay, wonderful...
