Have it BEFORE - yes and ultrasounds 00:06:07.92\00:06:10.70 to check and blood tests to check whether you are okay. 00:06:10.73\00:06:14.45 Okay, and so what about folic acid - that's very topical 00:06:14.48\00:06:17.91 Oh yes, we cannot say more than we can say, 00:06:17.94\00:06:22.90 it IS important... 00:06:22.94\00:06:24.98 You don't want to have a baby with no brain, you know. 00:06:25.02\00:06:28.06 ...A baby that comes out with only a face but no brain, 00:06:28.09\00:06:31.93 and/or a baby with spinal cord problems, 00:06:31.96\00:06:34.64 folic acid deficiency causes nervous system problems 00:06:34.67\00:06:39.83 from the brain down to the spinal cord. 00:06:39.86\00:06:41.79 It has been proven so you want to be sure 00:06:41.82\00:06:44.27 you have folic acid levels normal. 00:06:44.30\00:06:46.38 Take supplements before you even get pregnant. 00:06:46.41\00:06:48.66 Okay, and folic acid is found in our green leafy vegetables 00:06:48.69\00:06:52.34 ...beans and if you're on a good plant-based diet 00:06:52.37\00:06:55.20 there should be no danger of deficiencies. 00:06:55.23\00:06:59.60 So that's very encouraging. 00:06:59.63\00:07:01.00 So what about vitamin D levels? 00:07:01.03\00:07:02.72 This is now in the popular press that women 00:07:02.75\00:07:05.78 REALLY do need to take supplementation of vitamin D 00:07:05.81\00:07:08.27 because we're so deficient. 00:07:08.30\00:07:09.71 It's a pandemic - the deficiency 00:07:09.74\00:07:11.91 So, we should get a blood test to check? 00:07:11.94\00:07:14.67 Yes, that would be nice because then you know where you stand, 00:07:14.70\00:07:17.86 and then you can have - what they call is a "control" 00:07:17.89\00:07:21.34 to see how MUCH you should be taking, 00:07:21.37\00:07:23.24 how RIGOROUS you should be OUT IN THE SUNSHINE 00:07:23.27\00:07:26.25 and/or how MUCH vitamin D you should be taking - 00:07:26.28\00:07:28.89 because there is this controversy about 00:07:28.92\00:07:30.97 how much you take. 00:07:31.01\00:07:32.38 Well, you NEVER get an overdose in the sunshine. 00:07:32.41\00:07:34.92 Really? Yes, you never get 00:07:34.95\00:07:37.00 overdose from sunshine exposure except, of course, 00:07:37.03\00:07:39.39 you have to take care because you can develop 00:07:39.42\00:07:42.17 skin problems afterwards... 00:07:42.20\00:07:43.59 But as to the vitamin D with regards to the sunshine, 00:07:43.62\00:07:49.94 you cannot get an overdose of sunshine. 00:07:49.97\00:07:53.29 So then it's much better to be out in the sun, 00:07:53.32\00:07:56.00 and besides, you'll feel good about yourself. 00:07:56.03\00:07:57.90 You'd be healthy. Your sugar will be controlled. 00:07:57.93\00:08:01.84 Your cholesterol will be controlled... 00:08:01.87\00:08:04.48 And a lot of stuff, you'd be happier besides! 00:08:04.51\00:08:07.37 Your boyfriend would enjoy being with you. 00:08:07.40\00:08:10.26 Going to make a happier pregnancy 00:08:10.29\00:08:11.66 and make a happier baby! Yes! 00:08:11.69\00:08:13.15 But if we have to take supplements, 00:08:13.18\00:08:16.27 what are they recommending we should take? 00:08:16.30\00:08:18.12 Okay, there are 2 types of vitamin D 00:08:18.15\00:08:20.49 Okay, there is one vitamin, the vitamin D2 00:08:20.52\00:08:24.61 Vitamin D2 is taken from plant. 00:08:24.64\00:08:27.88 It's a plant sourced vitamin D. 00:08:27.91\00:08:31.00 And there is vitamin D3 which is animal sourced vitamin D 00:08:31.03\00:08:36.36 Well, it can come from different sources, 00:08:36.39\00:08:40.55 but the one that I would recommend is 00:08:40.58\00:08:43.34 the vitamin D that comes from sheep wool or sheep lanolin 00:08:43.37\00:08:48.42 That's what we would regularly give. 00:08:48.45\00:08:52.45 So those are the 2 types of vitamin D and there are 00:08:52.48\00:08:55.49 doses out there... 00:08:55.52\00:08:57.05 There are studies that have proven that even 00:08:57.08\00:08:58.84 as high as 10,000 IU is relatively safe 00:08:58.87\00:09:04.34 for supplementation... 00:09:04.37\00:09:06.29 But you have to take that for not longer than 2 months 00:09:06.32\00:09:09.97 and have your level checked again 10,000, 5,000 00:09:10.00\00:09:14.73 Maybe if you're afraid of 10,000, just go down to 5,000 00:09:14.76\00:09:21.15 Now, I've heard that some babies, 00:09:21.18\00:09:23.64 and certainly in certain countries of the world, 00:09:23.67\00:09:25.78 they are born with very low vitamin D levels 00:09:25.81\00:09:29.40 and this can actually cause fracturing of the baby's bones. 00:09:29.43\00:09:32.72 Yes, multiple fractures, in fact. 00:09:32.75\00:09:35.58 But you can easily fractures, you can bring them to the 00:09:35.61\00:09:40.32 hospital and put in... check this - this 00:09:40.35\00:09:42.72 But that's not the problem, the fractures are not the problem. 00:09:42.75\00:09:46.53 Actually, it's DEEPER than that; 00:09:46.56\00:09:48.67 mothers go to prison because they are - what do you call this 00:09:48.70\00:09:54.39 ...They are guilty; they are thought to be guilty 00:09:54.42\00:09:57.43 of maltreating their kids. 00:09:57.46\00:10:01.03 Babies with multiple fractures, the mom must have 00:10:01.06\00:10:03.96 rolled the baby down the stairs, 00:10:03.99\00:10:06.11 and the baby had a lot of broken bones, 00:10:06.14\00:10:07.90 but really, it's not that. 00:10:07.93\00:10:09.30 If the mother was just holding the baby in her arms 00:10:09.33\00:10:13.22 and maybe just lolling the baby to sleep, 00:10:13.25\00:10:16.44 and the baby... ... breaks bones 00:10:16.47\00:10:19.31 because the bones are SO brittle or friable 00:10:19.34\00:10:25.61 that they easily just fracture because of the lack of vitamin D 00:10:25.64\00:10:29.31 The MOTHER was deficient in vitamin D and, of course, 00:10:29.34\00:10:32.35 the baby WOULD be deficient in vitamin D. 00:10:32.38\00:10:35.26 Right, and vitamin D is necessary for the binding 00:10:35.29\00:10:39.11 of the calcium to keep the bones strong. Yes 00:10:39.14\00:10:41.61 So would you recommend a calcium supplement as well? 00:10:41.64\00:10:44.02 Yes, it is like this... When you do a vitamin D 00:10:44.05\00:10:49.01 a calcium should come along. 00:10:49.04\00:10:51.76 Okay, the 2 go together. Yes 00:10:51.79\00:10:53.31 That's why you have a lot of supplementations that say 00:10:53.34\00:10:56.93 "calcium, magnesium, vitamin D" 00:10:56.96\00:10:59.07 This is for bone strength... magnesium, calcium 00:10:59.10\00:11:04.53 You get your magnesium from your vegetables, 00:11:04.56\00:11:08.83 GREEN leafy vegetables! 00:11:08.86\00:11:10.46 You get your calcium there too but some would say 00:11:10.49\00:11:12.90 still take the calcium. 00:11:12.93\00:11:14.30 Okay, now a lot of ladies also suffer from anemia 00:11:14.33\00:11:17.28 during pregnancy, low iron... 00:11:17.31\00:11:19.19 So perhaps there are some foods that contain iron that would be- 00:11:19.22\00:11:22.62 Oh, blackstrap molasses... enjoyable iron source! 00:11:22.65\00:11:29.16 I lick it like this off a spoon. 00:11:29.19\00:11:32.75 I don't know about others, because 00:11:32.78\00:11:34.15 it's a little bit bitter but it's good. 00:11:34.18\00:11:36.30 I can put it in my beverage in the morning; 00:11:36.33\00:11:38.84 3 tablespoons a day would be really good. 00:11:38.87\00:11:41.42 Now, it has to be the blackstrap not any other kind? 00:11:41.45\00:11:44.02 Yeah, because the blackstrap is the one with 00:11:44.05\00:11:45.80 not only iron but the other minerals that come along with it 00:11:45.83\00:11:51.32 ...plus fiber. 00:11:51.35\00:11:52.77 Okay now during pregnancy, 00:11:52.80\00:11:54.97 often we gain huge amounts of weight; 00:11:55.00\00:11:57.95 let's move on to this subject, weight gain in pregnancy, 00:11:57.98\00:12:01.19 and the average recommended is 25-35 pounds, I believe... 00:12:01.22\00:12:05.92 But if you were already overweight when you 00:12:05.95\00:12:07.83 entered pregnancy, would you encourage people 00:12:07.86\00:12:10.62 to eat a little bit less... I mean, we're meant to have 00:12:10.65\00:12:13.22 an extra 300-500 calories a day, I think. 00:12:13.25\00:12:14.87 But if you're overweight, would you say... 00:12:14.90\00:12:16.99 don't take so many calories, 00:12:17.02\00:12:18.45 and you could lose the weight during the pregnancy? 00:12:18.48\00:12:20.73 Or... that still would be healthy for the lady? 00:12:20.76\00:12:23.89 Not so much... Really the thing is, 00:12:23.92\00:12:26.21 you should be spending more 00:12:26.24\00:12:28.52 the calories that your body had stored. 00:12:28.55\00:12:31.67 You hit for a certain amount of weight still; 00:12:31.70\00:12:35.60 25-35 is for somebody with normal weight to start with... 00:12:35.63\00:12:40.96 But if you are overweight, it's 15-25, 00:12:40.99\00:12:44.05 so it's about 10 pounds lesser than the normal weight gain. 00:12:44.08\00:12:48.51 And you could probably, just a little bit, 00:12:48.54\00:12:51.59 just a little bit, diminish on your food, 00:12:51.62\00:12:54.12 but, you see, there are 2 of you 00:12:54.15\00:12:55.52 that's why you cannot sacrifice. 00:12:55.55\00:12:58.18 Maybe the safer way would be for you to have regular exercise 00:12:58.21\00:13:02.50 and burn down whatever extra you have - 00:13:02.53\00:13:05.16 rather than trying to cut down on what 00:13:05.19\00:13:08.11 the stores you already have; 00:13:08.14\00:13:09.70 you and your baby would be suffering. 00:13:09.73\00:13:11.91 So exercise is the key. This is really very important! 00:13:11.94\00:13:14.24 And that's for everybody not just those of us 00:13:14.27\00:13:16.27 that want to lose a few pounds. 00:13:16.30\00:13:17.85 Okay, so what kind of exercise? 00:13:17.88\00:13:19.55 Well, studies have proven that if you were exercising... 00:13:19.58\00:13:26.24 let's say swimming, climbing the mountain on foot okay 00:13:26.27\00:13:31.23 not rock climbing but whatever exercise activity 00:13:31.26\00:13:36.50 the pre-pregnant woman was, 00:13:36.53\00:13:38.59 she can bring to pregnancy still. 00:13:38.62\00:13:41.32 So if she was mountain climbing, she can still... 00:13:41.35\00:13:46.55 as long as the tummy doesn't get in the way. 00:13:46.58\00:13:49.71 Even when she's still small when the tummy 00:13:49.74\00:13:51.87 is not really big and her back doesn't change yet, 00:13:51.90\00:13:54.11 the posture doesn't change yet, 00:13:54.14\00:13:56.54 she can still continue with the exercises. 00:13:56.57\00:13:59.24 Pregnancy is not a disease... 00:13:59.27\00:14:01.63 "Oh, I'm sick, I'm pregnant" NO - it's not! 00:14:01.66\00:14:05.46 Pregnancy is a NORMAL physiological thing! 00:14:05.49\00:14:09.66 It's not supposed to keep you from doing a lot of stuff 00:14:09.69\00:14:13.12 you used to do before you were pregnant. 00:14:13.15\00:14:15.39 And it's a beautiful time in your life, isn't it? Exactly! 00:14:15.42\00:14:17.93 It's a time when we blossom in spite of all the symptoms. 00:14:17.96\00:14:20.61 I enjoyed my pregnancy, really I did. 00:14:20.64\00:14:22.99 Even if there were some problems, I enjoyed it. 00:14:23.02\00:14:26.70 Now something else we need to mention is 00:14:26.73\00:14:28.99 ...obviously, we're avoiding a lot of the dangerous chemical 00:14:29.02\00:14:31.87 hazards but also the intake of drugs like nicotine, alcohol, 00:14:31.90\00:14:36.25 caffeine - could you give us a word about those 00:14:36.28\00:14:38.90 because they are so popularly used. Oh yes 00:14:38.93\00:14:40.90 I've seen babies affected by alcohol. 00:14:40.93\00:14:45.45 You call that the "fetal alcohol syndrome. " 00:14:45.48\00:14:48.95 Babies have a certain feature. 00:14:48.98\00:14:50.81 Oh, when the baby comes out, you just know it is... 00:14:50.84\00:14:53.36 even if the mother didn't tell you anything. 00:14:53.39\00:14:55.69 The face of the baby - you would know, the structure, 00:14:55.72\00:14:59.12 you know that the mother was drinking. 00:14:59.15\00:15:02.68 Alcohol can cause fetal alcohol syndrome, 00:15:02.71\00:15:05.49 so you don't want to have an abnormal baby, do you? You don't 00:15:05.52\00:15:09.68 So then refrain from doing alcohol. 00:15:09.71\00:15:12.02 For nicotine and for caffeine, 00:15:12.05\00:15:14.85 from cigarette-smoking and/or drinking coffee; 00:15:14.88\00:15:19.88 both of them cause small for gestational age 00:15:19.91\00:15:23.94 or low birth weight. 00:15:23.97\00:15:27.82 Low birth weight infants, if they ever come to term, 00:15:27.85\00:15:32.66 if they don't you can have a premature delivery. 00:15:32.69\00:15:37.30 So you have premature babies and/or babies that may 00:15:37.33\00:15:39.88 come to term but they are tiny, small for gestational age, 00:15:39.91\00:15:43.11 and these babies have risk factors. 00:15:43.14\00:15:45.75 You know there are risks to these kinds of babies. 00:15:45.78\00:15:47.65 They have a hard time coping... 00:15:47.68\00:15:49.64 failure to thrive, some things like that. 00:15:49.67\00:15:52.71 So we really encourage you, some of our viewers there 00:15:52.74\00:15:55.59 that maybe you're facing issues with nicotine and alcohol 00:15:55.62\00:15:59.86 that if you are pregnant, the Lord will give the grace 00:15:59.89\00:16:03.01 to refrain from those things so you can give your baby 00:16:03.04\00:16:05.93 the best start possible. 00:16:05.96\00:16:07.87 Let's talk about some of the symptoms that you 00:16:07.90\00:16:11.46 typically face when you first become pregnant. 00:16:11.49\00:16:14.32 Some people don't know they're pregnant until 00:16:14.35\00:16:16.80 several months later and some of us know right away. 00:16:16.83\00:16:19.54 We've got nausea, vomiting, our cravings. 00:16:19.57\00:16:21.91 What was it for you when you conceived your baby? 00:16:21.94\00:16:26.21 Oh, it's because I was not even thinking about getting pregnant; 00:16:26.24\00:16:31.22 as I said, I really was working on it, 00:16:31.25\00:16:34.96 but I think the first thing that alarmed me was 00:16:34.99\00:16:38.39 I had a VORACIOUS appetite! 00:16:38.42\00:16:42.39 I just ATE and ATE and ATE and ate! 00:16:42.42\00:16:45.73 And THEN when I noticed that my menses didn't come 00:16:45.76\00:16:48.87 on schedule... you know, sometimes it has something to do 00:16:48.90\00:16:52.84 with the mind also - you just can't explain everything! 00:16:52.87\00:16:57.49 But when I knew, I had my positive pregnancy test... 00:16:57.52\00:17:00.67 A few days after, I started having nausea, this nausea 00:17:00.70\00:17:05.59 and vomiting and ohhh. 00:17:05.62\00:17:08.27 And of course, being a doctor, you knew all the symptoms 00:17:08.30\00:17:09.67 that you should be having.
