Dr. Grivas what has attributed 00:01:19.29\00:01:23.12 to this epidemic of obesity in United States 00:01:23.13\00:01:26.85 and around the world? There are several 00:01:26.86\00:01:30.31 factors Lee, one is the diet itself, 00:01:30.32\00:01:34.52 in this country our diet has been now 00:01:34.53\00:01:39.40 weighted toward a high fat, high sugar intake. 00:01:39.41\00:01:45.53 And those fats mostly now are coming from 00:01:45.54\00:01:50.12 the animal foods, not vegetables fats, 00:01:50.13\00:01:53.54 but animal fats. There is more calories 00:01:53.55\00:01:58.40 in the fat foods, so we're up taking in a 00:01:58.41\00:02:03.92 higher choleric intake, and our exercise 00:02:03.93\00:02:07.99 levels have been declining. 00:02:08.00\00:02:10.54 Our lifestyle generally here in this country 00:02:10.55\00:02:13.81 is more sedentary, we have office jobs, 00:02:13.82\00:02:17.99 we sit behind computers, we as students we sit 00:02:18.00\00:02:23.69 in the classroom, we go home and study. 00:02:23.70\00:02:26.25 There is less and less exercise, it's alarming 00:02:26.26\00:02:32.43 for what's taking place here in this country, 00:02:32.44\00:02:35.02 so if you're taking in more calories with 00:02:35.03\00:02:38.48 these higher fat processed foods. 00:02:38.49\00:02:41.69 And you're exercising less you become larger, 00:02:41.70\00:02:45.75 because you're storing all of that excess fuel, 00:02:45.76\00:02:48.44 you're not burning it up. Now, when we talk about 00:02:48.45\00:02:51.23 obesity a lot of people especially those 00:02:51.24\00:02:54.81 who are watching, you're probably 00:02:54.82\00:02:55.90 thinking about diets, and there was so many 00:02:55.91\00:02:59.09 diets that we have today it is, 00:02:59.10\00:03:01.00 New Beverly Hills diet, there is the chocolate 00:03:01.01\00:03:04.00 diet, the cabbage diet and maybe you 00:03:04.01\00:03:06.40 who are watching you've tried many 00:03:06.41\00:03:07.92 of these diets and they have failed. 00:03:07.93\00:03:10.31 How do we know what is the best diet to be on? 00:03:10.32\00:03:13.42 It's interesting, your question about 00:03:13.43\00:03:17.63 the best diet. We had a recent editorial 00:03:17.64\00:03:23.86 article written by a physician who was the 00:03:23.87\00:03:27.65 chair person of Nutrition Department at Harvard. 00:03:27.66\00:03:32.21 And he was making some simple statements 00:03:32.22\00:03:36.66 and rebuttal to some physicians who were 00:03:36.67\00:03:38.55 talking about the Atkins diet that's promoting 00:03:38.56\00:03:40.96 you know for weight loss. And his question was 00:03:40.97\00:03:45.81 simply this, why all this fuss about these diets? 00:03:45.82\00:03:49.96 We already have all of the information 00:03:49.97\00:03:53.68 that's necessary, epidemiologically, 00:03:53.69\00:03:56.44 nutritionally, and medically, and the 00:03:56.45\00:03:59.33 clinical studies to show what is the best 00:03:59.34\00:04:01.72 diet for people, weight reduction, 00:04:01.73\00:04:04.56 reversal of disease and that is a primary 00:04:04.57\00:04:07.75 plant based diet, with some modifications 00:04:07.76\00:04:12.12 in the eating patterns which we all want to 00:04:12.13\00:04:14.82 discuss. But we don't have to go to extremes 00:04:14.83\00:04:19.32 Lee in order to lose weight. 00:04:19.33\00:04:21.56 We don't have to go on these prolonged 00:04:21.57\00:04:23.77 fasts in order to lose weight. 00:04:23.78\00:04:26.24 Right, it's an important topic and one that many 00:04:26.25\00:04:30.11 people struggle with, especially when they've 00:04:30.12\00:04:33.31 followed a specific diet maybe they've adhere 00:04:33.32\00:04:35.86 to it for a week or two weeks even a month, 00:04:35.87\00:04:38.37 and then they start to slip back and they start 00:04:38.38\00:04:43.23 to get discouraged and maybe even go into 00:04:43.24\00:04:47.05 depression as a result of failure of these diets, 00:04:47.06\00:04:50.75 but what you really telling me is lot of these, 00:04:50.76\00:04:53.19 these diets aren't working? No, but yet 00:04:53.20\00:04:56.28 God has a plan, he has a dietary plan that 00:04:56.29\00:04:59.85 can bring about true success, sure. 00:04:59.86\00:05:02.49 And what is some other problems in losing 00:05:02.50\00:05:05.69 weight too quickly you know we have many 00:05:05.70\00:05:09.54 people who are trying the best they can to 00:05:09.55\00:05:12.25 lose weight rapidly, does this create a 00:05:12.26\00:05:15.38 potential problem in one's health? 00:05:15.39\00:05:17.39 It may in fact there is a greater incidence 00:05:17.40\00:05:19.66 of gallbladder disease and people who are 00:05:19.67\00:05:22.20 taking off weight very rapidly, you can 00:05:22.21\00:05:24.66 precipitate problems with inflammation of 00:05:24.67\00:05:27.79 the gallbladder. But I think the biggest 00:05:27.80\00:05:30.18 problem with this rapid weight loss diets, 00:05:30.19\00:05:33.73 is that when people stop them, they may 00:05:33.74\00:05:36.93 have lost the weight, but then they go 00:05:36.94\00:05:39.48 right back to their previous pattern 00:05:39.49\00:05:42.61 of eating which allows them to regain that 00:05:42.62\00:05:45.43 weight and usually it's not just regaining, 00:05:45.44\00:05:47.92 they go pass that, and so they gain more weight. 00:05:47.93\00:05:50.67 Right, that's interesting you 00:05:50.68\00:05:51.90 should bring that out, because we have seen 00:05:51.91\00:05:54.69 there is a rebound effect, and often diets work 00:05:54.70\00:05:57.79 on the principle of illumination, 00:05:57.80\00:06:00.52 some almost to the point of even starvation, 00:06:00.53\00:06:05.64 that's right, but nevertheless a lot 00:06:05.65\00:06:07.76 of these actually have a reduction in 00:06:07.77\00:06:10.63 nutrients, so their body is craving the things 00:06:10.64\00:06:13.95 that they're not getting from their diet, 00:06:13.96\00:06:15.79 and as a result it's building up more of an 00:06:15.80\00:06:19.12 appetite. So, when they're off it, 00:06:19.13\00:06:20.79 they're more of a tenancy to overindulge, 00:06:20.80\00:06:24.24 right. Now, let's talk for a minute about 00:06:24.25\00:06:27.95 appetite control because you know there are 00:06:27.96\00:06:30.77 many viewers watching that are gonna be 00:06:30.78\00:06:33.20 ideal weight, even underweight, 00:06:33.21\00:06:35.20 but yet we still struggle with our appetite, 00:06:35.21\00:06:38.23 no matter how big or how small we are. 00:06:38.24\00:06:40.68 How can we get a better handle on our appetite, 00:06:40.69\00:06:45.54 what do you suggest would be some of the 00:06:45.55\00:06:47.75 ways we can control our appetite better? 00:06:47.76\00:06:50.19 Well, I will begin with my patients by talking 00:06:50.20\00:06:55.96 about a spiritual dimension of, of weight 00:06:55.97\00:06:59.96 reduction. Appetite is one of the biggest 00:06:59.97\00:07:05.43 problems for everyone, is the control to reign 00:07:05.44\00:07:10.18 in those desires for food, and certainly eating 00:07:10.19\00:07:15.55 is a pleasure, isn't it? I mean we should enjoy 00:07:15.56\00:07:17.63 our food, amen, God gave that for us, 00:07:17.64\00:07:19.56 and so we're, we're not trying to lessen that, 00:07:19.57\00:07:22.16 we don't want to be so austere that, 00:07:22.17\00:07:26.54 that people are losing the enjoyment of eating. 00:07:26.55\00:07:30.90 But there is an element that has come into 00:07:30.91\00:07:34.53 human nature since the fall, and that is the 00:07:34.54\00:07:39.59 absence of restraint on our passions, 00:07:39.60\00:07:43.41 on our appetites, and this is where we must 00:07:43.42\00:07:46.49 have the Lord to help us. Now, let's go back to 00:07:46.50\00:07:50.55 where the problem really started, you mention 00:07:50.56\00:07:52.56 about the fall, and how that was beginning 00:07:52.57\00:07:55.80 of the problem. What do you see that God 00:07:55.81\00:08:00.63 did to put a plan there to actually restore 00:08:00.64\00:08:05.24 control back to man, to give him the victory 00:08:05.25\00:08:08.67 over his appetite? Well, you remember 00:08:08.68\00:08:10.90 the very first work that Christ did after his 00:08:10.91\00:08:15.76 baptism was what? He went into the wilderness, 00:08:15.77\00:08:19.86 he went into the wilderness and fasted, 00:08:19.87\00:08:21.66 fasted that's right. And he had to come to 00:08:21.67\00:08:24.21 redeem man's failures, and the first temptation 00:08:24.22\00:08:29.79 was obviously on appetite, and so 00:08:29.80\00:08:32.98 we must not look to ourselves for strength 00:08:32.99\00:08:36.95 to curb this unconquerable desire of appetite, 00:08:36.96\00:08:41.85 we have to look to Jesus. 00:08:41.86\00:08:43.48 And if we will ask him to help us in this 00:08:43.49\00:08:48.95 struggle then the victory is ours by His grace. 00:08:48.96\00:08:53.19 What you're really telling me is that Jesus 00:08:53.20\00:08:56.00 can enter in to feelings, because he, he actually 00:08:56.01\00:09:01.57 was, as a Bible says tempted in all points 00:09:01.58\00:09:04.52 just like as we are, because he was 00:09:04.53\00:09:06.89 made in all points like we are, amen. 00:09:06.90\00:09:08.62 He had our flesh, he, he could actually 00:09:08.63\00:09:11.07 feel the hunger, in fact I think in the Bible 00:09:11.08\00:09:14.64 it does record after he had that fast, 00:09:14.65\00:09:17.14 it says he hungered and so he was, 00:09:17.15\00:09:20.21 he really had an appetite at that point, 00:09:20.22\00:09:23.32 and yet he had complete control. 00:09:23.33\00:09:26.38 And fortunately he doesn't ask us to fast 00:09:26.39\00:09:28.57 40 days, correct? No, no, no, I wouldn't 00:09:28.58\00:09:30.72 recommend it, he did that for us. 00:09:30.73\00:09:33.22 Amen, and another good point that you 00:09:33.23\00:09:36.50 mentioned was the enjoyment of food, 00:09:36.51\00:09:40.16 we don't want any of the viewers to get 00:09:40.17\00:09:43.58 an idea that we just promote a bland diet, 00:09:43.59\00:09:47.08 an unattractive diet, one that doesn't bring 00:09:47.09\00:09:50.62 satisfaction to our taste buds, right. 00:09:50.63\00:09:53.16 Now you have actually got personal 00:09:53.17\00:09:56.61 experience in this, I understand 00:09:56.62\00:09:59.56 you had a weight problem in the past 00:09:59.57\00:10:02.60 as a physician, and there was certain things 00:10:02.61\00:10:06.37 that happened in your life, could you just share 00:10:06.38\00:10:08.23 us your personal experience of how you 00:10:08.24\00:10:10.60 overcame this point. Sure, I'll just begin by 00:10:10.61\00:10:14.49 mentioning you were talking about various diets, 00:10:14.50\00:10:17.28 I don't think you could mention one that 00:10:17.29\00:10:19.90 I haven't been on in terms of trying that 00:10:19.91\00:10:23.79 struggle, that battle with the appetites. 00:10:23.80\00:10:26.46 And my experience was very similar to, 00:10:26.47\00:10:30.29 to others; I would lose some weight but then 00:10:30.30\00:10:34.81 when I would get off that diet so to speak, 00:10:34.82\00:10:38.00 I would go right back to my other eating 00:10:38.01\00:10:40.07 patterns, I never made a lifestyle change. 00:10:40.08\00:10:43.10 And I didn't know at that point the Lord 00:10:43.11\00:10:48.37 who alone could give me the power to overcome 00:10:48.38\00:10:51.79 that appetite, right. And it wasn't until 00:10:51.80\00:10:56.36 I became a Christian, until I found the Lord 00:10:56.37\00:11:01.93 who had been looking for me all those years 00:11:01.94\00:11:04.38 and developed a relationship with him 00:11:04.39\00:11:07.36 that he was able then to give me the 00:11:07.37\00:11:11.01 strength that I needed to curb these 00:11:11.02\00:11:14.02 unconquerable appetites, and also to reveal to me 00:11:14.03\00:11:20.10 a plan, an actual physical plan that 00:11:20.11\00:11:23.36 I could follow in order to take the weight off. 00:11:23.37\00:11:26.80 And when I had both of those, when the Lord 00:11:26.81\00:11:30.52 showed me those things and gave me that power 00:11:30.53\00:11:32.92 then I could start to make those changes 00:11:32.93\00:11:35.93 to change the lifestyle and eating pattern, 00:11:35.94\00:11:40.21 and the weight didn't just rapidly come off, 00:11:40.22\00:11:43.87 but it was steady, and that's what I would 00:11:43.88\00:11:46.60 like to encourage all of our viewers is that 00:11:46.61\00:11:49.66 if you are trying to develop a weight 00:11:49.67\00:11:53.12 reduction plan, don't be in tempered in that, 00:11:53.13\00:11:57.48 that we need to be balanced, 00:11:57.49\00:11:59.85 we need maybe to shoot for a pound, or pound 00:11:59.86\00:12:03.75 and a half per week weight loss. 00:12:03.76\00:12:06.51 And just be steady and persistent as the 00:12:06.52\00:12:09.76 Lord will help you, and it will come. 00:12:09.77\00:12:11.64 Now, there maybe some people who are 00:12:11.65\00:12:13.88 watching that have lost weight and they 00:12:13.89\00:12:17.91 haven't done it or they believe they haven't 00:12:17.92\00:12:20.44 done it in, in God strength. 00:12:20.45\00:12:22.44 Maybe they don't even believe in God, 00:12:22.45\00:12:24.82 I know before I was a Christian that 00:12:24.83\00:12:27.10 I became a vegetarian, I was convicted about 00:12:27.11\00:12:30.02 that and I, I practiced that. 00:12:30.03\00:12:32.09 What would you say to people out there 00:12:32.10\00:12:34.94 who are thinking perhaps, you know, 00:12:34.95\00:12:36.92 I didn't need God; I've been able to handle 00:12:36.93\00:12:40.01 this myself? It's a good question, 00:12:40.02\00:12:43.13 but you know Lee there were many benefits 00:12:43.14\00:12:46.55 that came to humanity through the cross that 00:12:46.56\00:12:50.32 people may not be aware of, but they are living 00:12:50.33\00:12:53.31 in this envelop of God's grace. Right, you see, 00:12:53.32\00:12:56.94 right, and so the Lord still is working for 00:12:56.95\00:13:00.27 individuals even though they may not 00:13:00.28\00:13:02.40 recognize it. But when we come to that conscious 00:13:02.41\00:13:06.29 recognition, and then we asks Him for more, 00:13:06.30\00:13:09.48 oh! He's able to do so much more, you see. 00:13:09.49\00:13:12.07 So, you're saying that, He does it in spite of us, 00:13:12.08\00:13:14.39 exactly. Because He's leading us to, 00:13:14.40\00:13:16.96 to greater truth and He wants us to eventually 00:13:16.97\00:13:20.42 get to that point where we say you know 00:13:20.43\00:13:22.24 He really did help me even though I didn't 00:13:22.25\00:13:24.20 realize He was helping me, exactly. 00:13:24.21\00:13:26.75 Dr. Grivas, maybe you can share a little bit 00:13:26.76\00:13:29.78 more about that point in your life where you 00:13:29.79\00:13:34.88 realized that you couldn't do it by yourself, 00:13:34.89\00:13:38.32 and then you had failed repeatedly different 00:13:38.33\00:13:42.02 dietary programs, what was it that gave you that 00:13:42.03\00:13:47.31 final push so to speak to, to follow through 00:13:47.32\00:13:51.07 and to get complete victory? I remember 00:13:51.08\00:13:54.87 I was studying the Bible at that point and 00:13:54.88\00:13:58.74 I came across Romans the 7th chapter, okay. 00:13:58.75\00:14:02.80 Paul's struggle, and you know Paul admitted it 00:14:02.81\00:14:08.43 wasn't that he didn't know what to do, 00:14:08.44\00:14:10.53 but he found that even knowing that he ended 00:14:10.54\00:14:14.03 up doing the very opposite. 00:14:14.04\00:14:15.88 He would fall back into those old patterns of 00:14:15.89\00:14:18.75 living even though he knew he needed to change. 00:14:18.76\00:14:21.80 And when I read that I thought you know 00:14:21.81\00:14:26.22 that then is my history, that's my problem. 00:14:26.23\00:14:30.17 You saw yourself? I saw myself and I said well, 00:14:30.18\00:14:33.39 if that was Paul's problem and there 00:14:33.40\00:14:35.52 was hope for him in Jesus, then there was 00:14:35.53\00:14:38.26 for me also, and that's when I really started 00:14:38.27\00:14:40.57 seeking the Lord, and that's when things 00:14:40.58\00:14:42.23 started to change. So, you cried out: 00:14:42.24\00:14:44.20 O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me. 00:14:44.21\00:14:46.90 Amen. Praise God. Let's talk for a minute about 00:14:46.91\00:14:50.91 emotional eating; we know that a lot of people eat 00:14:50.92\00:14:55.59 because they feel that emotional need, 00:14:55.60\00:14:58.08 how can those people be helped 00:14:58.09\00:15:00.74 to break that habit? Well, we don't want 00:15:00.75\00:15:05.28 to deny that eating is a pleasure right, 00:15:05.29\00:15:08.38 and a lot of people get comfort from that, 00:15:08.39\00:15:11.12 and we don't want to take that from them. 00:15:11.13\00:15:13.37 But in the life that is submerged in Christ 00:15:13.38\00:15:18.57 there are so many other pleasures. 00:15:18.58\00:15:21.30 So, that eating is just one of many, 00:15:21.31\00:15:24.09 and we don't then live in order to eat, 00:15:24.10\00:15:29.02 but we are eating for strength, 00:15:29.03\00:15:30.90 so that we can enjoy all the other elements 00:15:30.91\00:15:33.46 of the abundant life in Christ. 00:15:33.47\00:15:35.70 So, what you're saying is we don't wanna 00:15:35.71\00:15:37.95 make food an ideal, right, but we do want 00:15:37.96\00:15:41.07 to make it appetizing, sure, and pleasurable. 00:15:41.08\00:15:43.55 And I think that's important when we 00:15:43.56\00:15:45.16 follow a good dietary program that we do 00:15:45.17\00:15:50.02 actually enjoy the food that we're eating; 00:15:50.03\00:15:52.52 it was designed by God to be pleasurable. 00:15:52.53\00:15:55.48 I could imagine in the beginning the fruit just 00:15:55.49\00:15:58.52 I mean just the smell of it was enough to give 00:15:58.53\00:16:02.29 you a hearty appetite. Yes. What you're saying 00:16:02.30\00:16:05.74 too is that we don't want to go too far, 00:16:05.75\00:16:08.61 and make it something that we can't live apart 00:16:08.62\00:16:12.31 from and the God has created other avenues, 00:16:12.32\00:16:15.32 right, that we can enjoy even more pleasurable 00:16:15.33\00:16:17.96 than eating, exactly. Let's, let's talk about 00:16:17.97\00:16:22.71 exercise and its role in obesity. 00:16:22.72\00:16:25.21 Could you explain to the viewers who are 00:16:25.22\00:16:28.63 listening some of the simple exercise programs 00:16:28.64\00:16:33.88 that they can get on or maybe some of the 00:16:33.89\00:16:36.38 different exercise practices they can use 00:16:36.39\00:16:41.81 to lower their weight. Sure, the biggest thing 00:16:41.82\00:16:47.16 in exercise I believe is consistency, 00:16:47.17\00:16:50.34 a daily plan where people are beginning to burn 00:16:50.35\00:16:58.08 those calories that they have stored and 00:16:58.09\00:17:02.17 exercise is one area, the other is the dietary 00:17:02.18\00:17:06.55 change that we must address but with exercise 00:17:06.56\00:17:10.96 I recommend an exercise program that's enjoyable, 00:17:10.97\00:17:14.59 that they will love to do, that they will begin 00:17:14.60\00:17:18.42 to look forward to everyday. 00:17:18.43\00:17:21.20 Now, walking is the best exercise, 00:17:21.21\00:17:24.08 there is no question about that, 00:17:24.09\00:17:25.42 and some people really enjoy getting outside 00:17:25.43\00:17:29.57 and walking. And this is where I tell people 00:17:29.58\00:17:31.77 whether permitting, get outdoors because 00:17:31.78\00:17:34.14 then you're gonna get the other benefits of 00:17:34.15\00:17:35.91 sunshine and fresh air, the beauty of God's 00:17:35.92\00:17:39.43 created nature. So do you exercise outdoors 00:17:39.44\00:17:44.10 and try to have a systematic plan 00:17:44.11\00:17:46.66 of when you're gonna exercise and we should 00:17:46.67\00:17:50.10 also help people to understand that exercise 00:17:50.11\00:17:53.10 is accumulative through the day. 00:17:53.11\00:17:55.24 You may not have to do it all at one point, 00:17:55.25\00:17:57.60 just if you can get out and walk for 10 minutes 00:17:57.61\00:18:00.77 when you're going to the store, park your car 00:18:00.78\00:18:04.49 at a distance walk into the store, climb 00:18:04.50\00:18:08.75 those stairs, do useful work, do your gardening, 00:18:08.76\00:18:13.22 your wrecking. So, we, we don't have to 00:18:13.23\00:18:16.12 get on a treadmill or enter a marathon 00:18:16.13\00:18:19.97 or we can, we can do something simple 00:18:19.98\00:18:22.43 as even working and gardening, sure. 00:18:22.44\00:18:25.00 It's interesting, reminds of a story 00:18:25.01\00:18:28.13 of a lady who all she could do was move 00:18:28.14\00:18:30.52 her arms. In fact she was watching television 00:18:30.53\00:18:32.64 most of the day and she gain tremendous weight 00:18:32.65\00:18:36.79 I think she was around 1200 pounds in weight. 00:18:36.80\00:18:41.00 And one day someone motivated her to do 00:18:41.01\00:18:45.99 some exercise, and she could just move her arms 00:18:46.00\00:18:49.09 and she was waving her arms and then 00:18:49.10\00:18:51.03 she was also move her legs. And as months went 00:18:51.04\00:18:54.71 by she lost weight, and as years went by could 00:18:54.72\00:18:58.68 you believe she was actually able to not 00:18:58.69\00:19:02.26 just stand up and move around, 00:19:02.27\00:19:04.36 but she was able to lose 1,000 pounds. 00:19:04.37\00:19:08.32 She, she went from 1200 down to 200 pounds, 00:19:08.33\00:19:12.61 that took a, a number of years to do that. 00:19:12.62\00:19:15.04 But it just goes to show how much 00:19:15.05\00:19:17.71 resilience the body can have in its recovery once 00:19:17.72\00:19:21.52 we follow a healthier plan. Right, now lets 00:19:21.53\00:19:25.31 just talk a moment about those who come 00:19:25.32\00:19:27.66 to lifestyle center such as Wildwood that 00:19:27.67\00:19:30.67 is one of the things we do, we put them 00:19:30.68\00:19:32.58 on a good lifestyle program. 00:19:32.59\00:19:34.19 Is it best to put, put them on exercise 00:19:34.20\00:19:38.73 program in, in the morning to get all 00:19:38.74\00:19:40.94 the exercise or do we spread it out, 00:19:40.95\00:19:43.89 what is the best plan as far as losing weight 00:19:43.90\00:19:46.40 goes? Well, we certainly put them on an exercise 00:19:46.41\00:19:50.79 program, their walking is throughout different 00:19:50.80\00:19:54.57 parts of the day, morning, middle of the day and 00:19:54.58\00:19:57.10 so forth. But also we make some changes 00:19:57.11\00:20:00.03 in their diet which is important, and we are 00:20:00.04\00:20:04.15 recommending more plant foods, no snacks, 00:20:04.16\00:20:09.54 okay, in between 5 or 6 hours at least 00:20:09.55\00:20:13.27 separating two meals. And encouraging them 00:20:13.28\00:20:17.77 we have a little gathering in the evening, 00:20:17.78\00:20:21.21 so that when they're accustom to eating 00:20:21.22\00:20:24.08 and it's a social enjoyment. We still 00:20:24.09\00:20:26.50 serve lemon water or something like that 00:20:26.51\00:20:30.13 at night, but it's a social time that they 00:20:30.14\00:20:32.62 can get together and it makes that skipping 00:20:32.63\00:20:35.01 of the third meal a little less painful. 00:20:35.02\00:20:38.13 Right, so it's better to have your lemon 00:20:38.14\00:20:40.65 water with a group of people that are gonna 00:20:40.66\00:20:42.48 like it, exactly, okay, exactly. So, having that 00:20:42.49\00:20:45.35 social network you say that's very important 00:20:45.36\00:20:48.91 as far as being able to feel you know that, 00:20:48.92\00:20:52.90 that emotional support, that encouragement 00:20:52.91\00:20:55.94 and this is why it's good to try to lose 00:20:55.95\00:20:59.34 weight with a group of people. 00:20:59.35\00:21:01.33 And you know sometimes not 00:21:01.34\00:21:03.52 everyone is so encouraged when people make 00:21:03.53\00:21:06.44 these lifestyle changes. In fact some people are 00:21:06.45\00:21:09.17 a little on the discouraging side, 00:21:09.18\00:21:11.32 especially if you know they're being convicted 00:21:11.33\00:21:14.45 of some lifestyle changes that they need to make, 00:21:14.46\00:21:17.05 sure. So, let's talk a little moment about sleep 00:21:17.06\00:21:22.16 and it's role in obesity, does it play a role 00:21:22.17\00:21:25.83 and how big of role does it play? 00:21:25.84\00:21:28.05 Well, I think it's definitely a factor and 00:21:28.06\00:21:32.13 we have been able to demonstrate that people 00:21:32.14\00:21:34.53 who are stressed from lack of sleep; 00:21:34.54\00:21:37.12 they will tend to eat more during the day. 00:21:37.13\00:21:39.85 And so we would factor that in and try to 00:21:39.86\00:21:46.39 help individuals who are lets say not 00:21:46.40\00:21:50.31 sleeping well, they're not a good sleeping 00:21:50.32\00:21:52.73 program, they're going to bed late, 00:21:52.74\00:21:54.92 and they're getting up late. 00:21:54.93\00:21:56.35 We try to help them in the lifestyle center 00:21:56.36\00:21:58.93 to change that pattern also, to get to bed 00:21:58.94\00:22:01.81 earlier, I think we've suggested to them 00:22:01.82\00:22:06.92 9:30 or 10 at the latest for retiring sleeping 00:22:06.93\00:22:10.71 7 to 8 hours or so. And then getting up 00:22:10.72\00:22:14.18 and not going back to bed right. 00:22:14.19\00:22:16.79 Is that possible for someone coming from 00:22:16.80\00:22:18.71 someone like New York city, they've been 00:22:18.72\00:22:20.70 used to 1, 2 O'clock in the morning, 00:22:20.71\00:22:22.96 they come to this outback place, 00:22:22.97\00:22:25.32 surrounded by birds and nature and then 00:22:25.33\00:22:28.77 the lights go off at 9, 9:30. 00:22:28.78\00:22:31.12 Do they, do they enjoy that, do they get use 00:22:31.13\00:22:33.91 to that? They get use to it, and they start 00:22:33.92\00:22:36.16 to enjoy, okay, but it may take a little while, 00:22:36.17\00:22:38.65 because they're used to that more intense 00:22:38.66\00:22:42.37 phase, but this is one of the advantages 00:22:42.38\00:22:45.73 of coming to a lifestyle center, 00:22:45.74\00:22:47.83 it's like Jesus said, its time to come apart 00:22:47.84\00:22:50.64 and rest awhile, right. It gets them away 00:22:50.65\00:22:53.30 from the stresses of life and lifestyle changes 00:22:53.31\00:22:56.58 are best made in a safe and comfortable 00:22:56.59\00:23:00.35 environment, one preferably that's 00:23:00.36\00:23:02.76 surrounded by the beauties of nature 00:23:02.77\00:23:06.26 where God is there, their minds are directed 00:23:06.27\00:23:09.83 spiritually. It's so much easy to make 00:23:09.84\00:23:12.52 these changes. And what about that folks 00:23:12.53\00:23:14.76 who are listening at home and they're 00:23:14.77\00:23:15.87 thinking well this sounds ideal, it sounds 00:23:15.88\00:23:18.33 perfect but yet I'm, I'm stuck in the city, 00:23:18.34\00:23:22.16 I don't get to go out much, what hope is 00:23:22.17\00:23:26.97 there for me, can I make some of these 00:23:26.98\00:23:28.80 changes where I am? Yes, very definitely, 00:23:28.81\00:23:32.41 God is where we are right, he comes to 00:23:32.42\00:23:37.68 where you are, so if you can't go to a 00:23:37.69\00:23:40.81 lifestyle center, don't despair but start to 00:23:40.82\00:23:44.29 incorporate some of these principles that 00:23:44.30\00:23:46.34 we're talking about now with the Lords 00:23:46.35\00:23:48.30 help into your daily program and you watch 00:23:48.31\00:23:51.11 what the Lord will do, it will be amazing. 00:23:51.12\00:23:53.80 And so the message we want to give to 00:23:53.81\00:23:56.52 there is really a message of hope, 00:23:56.53\00:23:58.32 no matter where you are, no matter 00:23:58.33\00:24:00.88 where you've come from there are some 00:24:00.89\00:24:03.37 simple changes that one can make, amen. 00:24:03.38\00:24:05.76 Let's talk a little bit about snacking because 00:24:05.77\00:24:08.19 I know that you know, we so tempted, 00:24:08.20\00:24:10.78 whenever we go out we go to a restaurant, 00:24:10.79\00:24:12.86 we go even to the super market, 00:24:12.87\00:24:14.52 we're constantly bombarded with different 00:24:14.53\00:24:17.34 items they're staring us in the face 00:24:17.35\00:24:19.31 and we even start to imagine some of the 00:24:19.32\00:24:21.61 flavors and the smells hit us. 00:24:21.62\00:24:23.83 How do we cope with that you know what 00:24:23.84\00:24:26.05 provisions can we make to, to get the 00:24:26.06\00:24:28.88 control in that situation? Well, first 00:24:28.89\00:24:31.94 of all when we are subjected to temptation, 00:24:31.95\00:24:35.09 I encourage my patients you pray, 00:24:35.10\00:24:37.22 okay. And you ask the Lord to help you 00:24:37.23\00:24:40.51 and also to try not to go at least knowingly 00:24:40.52\00:24:44.42 into situations where you know you're gonna 00:24:44.43\00:24:47.19 be tempted to eat. In other words trying to 00:24:47.20\00:24:50.39 avoid where you can and then where you can't 00:24:50.40\00:24:52.87 then the Lord will be your strong hold, 00:24:52.88\00:24:55.00 your refuge. And it doesn't last forever, 00:24:55.01\00:24:58.91 in other words as the Lord is working 00:24:58.92\00:25:00.69 to give you victories, one victory after 00:25:00.70\00:25:03.71 another you become stronger. 00:25:03.72\00:25:05.47 And so these same challenges that you had 00:25:05.48\00:25:08.42 will become less and less as you're growing 00:25:08.43\00:25:11.27 in Christ. And I think that something very 00:25:11.28\00:25:14.26 important that we need to keep in mind 00:25:14.27\00:25:15.92 that temptation doesn't stay around forever, 00:25:15.93\00:25:19.28 but the will has to be set, yes. 00:25:19.29\00:25:22.95 For that temptation to go and that strength 00:25:22.96\00:25:25.55 to come how important is that will in making 00:25:25.56\00:25:30.57 those decisions? It's everything, 00:25:30.58\00:25:33.02 because the will is the power of our choice, 00:25:33.03\00:25:37.43 in other words God will not do for us the willing 00:25:37.44\00:25:41.95 that we must do, we must make the choice. 00:25:41.96\00:25:44.88 But it's like a, a boat on the sea with a sail, 00:25:44.89\00:25:50.47 right, alright and a, and a director of the 00:25:50.48\00:25:55.91 direction there what it is the router, 00:25:55.92\00:25:59.69 router, okay yes in other words we can make 00:25:59.70\00:26:03.18 the choice and that's the router. 00:26:03.19\00:26:05.13 We can make the choice for Christ he then 00:26:05.14\00:26:08.45 supplies the power which then moves the 00:26:08.46\00:26:11.58 vessel right, okay, right but we have to make 00:26:11.59\00:26:14.98 that choice. He will not make that choice for us. 00:26:14.99\00:26:17.92 If we don't make the choice we're left to our 00:26:17.93\00:26:20.82 own self sufficiency which is weakness. 00:26:20.83\00:26:24.48 Right, and I think one of the important 00:26:24.49\00:26:27.09 things to remember even if you're struggling 00:26:27.10\00:26:29.05 with your will, we can at least be willing to be, 00:26:29.06\00:26:32.24 be made willing sure, right. So, the Lord will 00:26:32.25\00:26:34.91 even strengthen that little desire that 00:26:34.92\00:26:37.50 we have to make some of these lifestyle 00:26:37.51\00:26:39.88 changes, right. What do you see as the most 00:26:39.89\00:26:43.89 important factor for those who are going 00:26:43.90\00:26:47.59 to follow the program and making those 00:26:47.60\00:26:49.99 healthy lifestyle changes? First of all 00:26:50.00\00:26:53.26 the spiritual dimension that we've talked about, 00:26:53.27\00:26:56.08 secondly is to know the plan and then to ask 00:26:56.09\00:27:01.44 the Lord to help you to adhere to it, 00:27:01.45\00:27:03.53 perseverance, perseverance 00:27:03.54\00:27:06.48 and well doing, okay it's those who endure 00:27:06.49\00:27:09.92 to the end shall be saved right. 00:27:09.93\00:27:12.81 Thank you very much, our time has come to an end, 00:27:12.82\00:27:16.26 I hope you've been encouraged as you 00:27:16.27\00:27:19.65 look at some of the practical ways that 00:27:19.66\00:27:22.84 you can make some of these lifestyle 00:27:22.85\00:27:24.47 changes in your life.
