The following program presents principles 00:00:01.93\00:00:02.90 designed to promote good health 00:00:02.90\00:00:04.07 and is not intended to take the place 00:00:04.47\00:00:05.97 of personalized professional care. 00:00:05.97\00:00:07.80 The opinions and ideas expressed 00:00:08.20\00:00:10.24 are those of the speaker. 00:00:10.54\00:00:11.51 Viewers are encouraged to draw their own 00:00:11.94\00:00:13.71 conclusions about the information presented. 00:00:13.71\00:00:16.08 Welcome to Wonderfully Made, 00:00:36.73\00:00:38.47 your host for today is Lee Wellard, 00:00:38.83\00:00:40.67 a lifestyle educator from Wildwood Lifestyle Center. 00:00:40.67\00:00:43.77 And today we have on the set Dr. Scott Grivas, 00:00:44.31\00:00:47.64 thank you for joining us today. Thank you. 00:00:48.01\00:00:49.94 We are going to be looking at a very 00:00:50.31\00:00:52.11 important topic today, one that is, 00:00:52.11\00:00:54.42 one of the most fastest growing debilitating 00:00:54.42\00:00:57.75 conditions in our world today, 00:00:57.75\00:00:59.05 we are going to looking at diabetes, 00:00:59.05\00:01:00.86 but in the contest of the good news of diabetes. 00:01:00.86\00:01:03.83 Dr. Grivas let's just start the program 00:01:04.36\00:01:07.66 by finding out how prevalent is diabetes, 00:01:07.66\00:01:10.83 is it something that's on the decrease? 00:01:10.83\00:01:12.57 What is it today? 00:01:13.17\00:01:14.17 I wish I could say that it is Lee, 00:01:15.10\00:01:16.97 but unfortunately no, diabetes is increasing 00:01:17.41\00:01:21.18 almost daily. I think the last estimate that 00:01:21.18\00:01:24.38 I read was probably close to 24 million Americans 00:01:24.81\00:01:28.78 are afflicted with this disease. 00:01:29.22\00:01:31.29 And also it is occurring in younger ages now, 00:01:31.79\00:01:35.86 even in children. Now tell us what are some 00:01:36.39\00:01:39.73 of the signs and symptoms of diabetes? 00:01:39.73\00:01:42.83 It can vary some actually have very little 00:01:44.40\00:01:48.97 in the way of presenting symptoms. 00:01:48.97\00:01:51.74 But, others may represent excessive thirst, 00:01:52.71\00:01:58.08 increased urination, sometimes weight 00:01:58.55\00:02:02.32 loss actually. Because of an ability 00:02:02.32\00:02:05.85 to metabolize carbohydrates, fatigue, 00:02:06.19\00:02:11.69 just general debility and weakness. 00:02:12.39\00:02:14.30 Now, there are millions of Americans 00:02:14.63\00:02:16.83 I believe that have diabetes but not even 00:02:16.83\00:02:19.37 aware that they have this problem. 00:02:19.37\00:02:21.34 How can these people identify that 00:02:22.54\00:02:25.94 they do have a problem, or do they often just wait 00:02:25.94\00:02:28.81 too long before they do something about it? 00:02:28.81\00:02:31.25 You know if you're not feeling bad you don't 00:02:31.88\00:02:34.25 usually go for checkups that's the tendency. 00:02:34.25\00:02:38.15 But, yes by simply going to your physician 00:02:38.65\00:02:42.26 or to a health clinic and having your 00:02:42.66\00:02:45.36 blood sugar checked. You can pretty much 00:02:45.36\00:02:48.76 tell whether or not you have 00:02:48.76\00:02:50.23 problems with glucose metabolism. 00:02:50.23\00:02:52.40 Right, lets just talk about glucose for a minute, 00:02:52.40\00:02:55.00 what is considered a diabetic range 00:02:55.40\00:02:58.77 when we're talking of blood sugar levels? 00:02:58.77\00:03:00.51 For fasting levels of blood glucose over 125 00:03:00.91\00:03:05.78 would be considered in the diabetic range. 00:03:06.25\00:03:08.75 Pre-diabetes probably some where 00:03:09.18\00:03:11.72 between a 100 and 125 in a fasting state 00:03:11.72\00:03:15.32 Now, when we're talking about pre-diabetes 00:03:15.72\00:03:17.59 we are talking about not full blown, 00:03:17.59\00:03:19.69 we're not there yet but we're actually on our way, 00:03:19.69\00:03:21.86 exactly. So, that can be just as dangerous 00:03:22.36\00:03:27.80 so to speak then someone who maybe 00:03:27.80\00:03:30.87 is on the low side of diabetic but they, 00:03:30.87\00:03:33.64 they're not even aware that 00:03:34.04\00:03:35.78 they have that problem. It shows you, 00:03:35.78\00:03:37.88 you're on the wrong path, and you need 00:03:37.88\00:03:40.62 to make some lifestyle changes. 00:03:40.62\00:03:42.38 Right and as sugar levels change from time to time, 00:03:42.38\00:03:45.42 so we may have a high blood sugar level at 00:03:45.85\00:03:50.99 one point but then it may not necessitate 00:03:50.99\00:03:54.00 that in fact we have diabetes but at the same 00:03:54.00\00:03:56.93 time it could mean that you know we are well 00:03:56.93\00:04:00.74 on the way to developing a lot of the complications 00:04:00.74\00:04:03.57 that diabetics have, sure. Now let's talk 00:04:03.57\00:04:06.61 about some of the complications. 00:04:06.61\00:04:08.24 What are the most serious complications 00:04:09.04\00:04:11.18 that diabetics face today? 00:04:11.18\00:04:12.58 Well, there are two class of complications 00:04:14.12\00:04:16.75 for the diabetic, we call them macrovascular 00:04:16.75\00:04:22.32 and microvascular because most of the 00:04:22.62\00:04:24.76 damage occurs in the vessels, 00:04:24.76\00:04:26.66 the large vessel complications, 00:04:27.83\00:04:30.40 we lump together as heart attacks, strokes, 00:04:31.07\00:04:36.00 peripheral vascular disease involving 00:04:36.50\00:04:39.11 the extremities that often end in 00:04:39.11\00:04:41.64 gangrenous limbs, amputations etcetera. 00:04:42.11\00:04:46.05 The microvascular complications would be 00:04:46.92\00:04:50.45 problems with the eyes. We call it retinopathy, 00:04:51.89\00:04:55.99 an involvement of the small vessels of the eye. 00:04:55.99\00:04:59.06 The small vessels that go into the kidney 00:04:59.39\00:05:01.96 that result in the term is nephropathy 00:05:01.96\00:05:05.63 or kidney insufficiency. And this leads to a very, 00:05:06.07\00:05:11.51 very high incidence of end stage renal failure 00:05:11.51\00:05:15.11 and dialysis complications. The other would be 00:05:15.61\00:05:19.25 neuropathy, the small vessels that 00:05:19.25\00:05:22.15 carry blood to the nerves. 00:05:22.48\00:05:24.89 They're impaired and so you start to get ischemic 00:05:25.39\00:05:28.52 or a lack of blood changes to those nerves 00:05:28.52\00:05:32.76 and they begin to malfunction, 00:05:32.76\00:05:35.46 results in pain, discomfiture in the 00:05:36.03\00:05:39.53 legs and feet. A feeling of burnings, 00:05:39.53\00:05:42.94 sometimes numbness, just discomfort. 00:05:42.94\00:05:46.71 Now, let's get to the, the cause of the problem 00:05:48.01\00:05:50.51 we've seen diabetes dramatically increase 00:05:50.51\00:05:53.25 especially around the mid 1990s. 00:05:53.25\00:05:56.95 What do you believe is the cause 00:05:57.82\00:05:59.59 or the causes of this problem? 00:05:59.59\00:06:01.89 Well, you know we used to think that diabetes 00:06:03.32\00:06:05.93 was a sugar disease, right. 00:06:05.93\00:06:07.46 But, as our understating has increased 00:06:08.56\00:06:12.30 we understand that's really not the case, 00:06:12.30\00:06:14.30 the complication is rising blood sugar. 00:06:14.60\00:06:16.91 But, basically leads it's too many calories 00:06:18.24\00:06:21.54 too much fat in the diet especially animal fats. 00:06:22.18\00:06:25.68 And as people get larger and larger, 00:06:26.28\00:06:28.98 they develop more resistance to their 00:06:28.98\00:06:32.55 indigenous production of insulin, and so you can't 00:06:32.55\00:06:35.52 get glucose into the cell and so the cell then 00:06:35.52\00:06:40.53 it starts from its fuel source but the 00:06:40.53\00:06:44.00 blood sugar begins to raise in 00:06:44.00\00:06:46.47 the blood circulation and this is what is 00:06:47.37\00:06:51.94 very damaging, right to the vessels. 00:06:51.94\00:06:54.08 Now I understand that not all fats are 00:06:54.38\00:06:56.08 created equal, so when we talking about fats 00:06:56.08\00:06:58.48 what particular fats that we're really taking about? 00:06:58.48\00:07:01.28 Primarily the animal fats, cholesterol saturated 00:07:01.68\00:07:06.55 fats that we find that Americans are consuming 00:07:06.55\00:07:10.29 in such a large quantities today. 00:07:10.29\00:07:12.59 Right, right and what you believe has contributed 00:07:12.59\00:07:15.93 to us consuming more of these fats? 00:07:15.93\00:07:18.93 Well, we now have an increase in the fast foods 00:07:19.77\00:07:25.71 that are being offered to people 00:07:26.68\00:07:29.51 as a food substitute. And we've also gone step away 00:07:29.51\00:07:34.82 from ingesting our food in the most natural way, 00:07:35.25\00:07:39.59 we're processing, we are adding things to our 00:07:39.59\00:07:43.19 foods and so forth. So, it is not just as the Lord 00:07:43.19\00:07:46.49 originally gave us, right. We have a lot of 00:07:46.49\00:07:49.66 added sugars, a lot of added fats 00:07:49.66\00:07:51.93 and so forth animal fats. 00:07:51.93\00:07:53.47 It was interesting to me when I came across 00:07:53.47\00:07:56.00 some research about the island of Crete in Greece 00:07:56.00\00:07:58.97 that they have 40 percent of their calories 00:07:59.37\00:08:01.74 from fat and yet they have one of the lowest 00:08:02.18\00:08:04.98 incidence of heart disease in the world 00:08:04.98\00:08:06.61 simply because of the type of fat that they were 00:08:06.92\00:08:09.48 using was predominantly plant-based, yes such as 00:08:09.48\00:08:12.35 the olive and so this can be more of a protective 00:08:12.35\00:08:15.46 role rather than getting these other types 00:08:15.46\00:08:18.29 of denatured fats in more of a process form. 00:08:18.29\00:08:21.73 Sure, now let's talk for a minute about some 00:08:21.73\00:08:26.57 of the medications that people are on, 00:08:26.57\00:08:30.64 it's predominately insulin or metformin. 00:08:31.01\00:08:34.68 What are some of the complications that could 00:08:34.98\00:08:37.68 arise with people using these for long term? 00:08:37.68\00:08:41.08 Well, earlier on when we first began using 00:08:42.38\00:08:46.02 the oral glucose agents, we found studies 00:08:46.02\00:08:51.09 showing that there was actually an increase, 00:08:51.09\00:08:53.26 a raise in the cardiovascular 00:08:53.26\00:08:55.00 complications with diabetes. 00:08:55.00\00:08:56.97 And increased deaths, we are still though primarily 00:08:56.97\00:09:01.57 using agents that are like the Sulfonylurea drugs 00:09:01.57\00:09:07.34 that actually help to stimulate insulin release 00:09:07.68\00:09:14.62 and secretion by the pancreas. 00:09:14.62\00:09:16.28 We now have those that are called insulin 00:09:16.65\00:09:19.72 sensitizers that try to help with decreasing 00:09:19.72\00:09:23.53 the insulin resistance at a cellular level. 00:09:23.53\00:09:26.46 We do have new agents, 00:09:27.40\00:09:29.43 now we've got they what are they call 00:09:29.73\00:09:31.17 the incretins, which are to, they're given by 00:09:31.17\00:09:34.24 injection to help stimulate insulin secretion 00:09:34.24\00:09:39.04 via hormonal pathways in the digestive system. 00:09:39.04\00:09:42.08 Anyway we have insulin. 00:09:42.41\00:09:43.68 We've got other agents that help to retard 00:09:44.38\00:09:47.75 the breakdown of carbohydrates 00:09:47.75\00:09:50.25 in the GI tract, but with all of those agents 00:09:50.25\00:09:57.63 especially the drug agents. 00:09:57.93\00:09:59.76 Not so much the insulin, there is a raising 00:09:59.76\00:10:02.63 incidents of side-effects from changing in changes 00:10:02.63\00:10:07.57 in electrolyte, balance in the blood, nausea, 00:10:07.57\00:10:16.61 GI tract, disturbances like diarrhea with some 00:10:17.51\00:10:22.35 of these agents. Metformin a very common agent now, 00:10:22.35\00:10:27.79 one of the biggest problems there is the 00:10:27.79\00:10:29.99 incidence of what we call like lactic acidosis. 00:10:29.99\00:10:35.23 So, we have to be very careful that 00:10:35.53\00:10:37.40 these people are warned when they are on 00:10:37.40\00:10:39.93 this medication. If they get like a febrile illness, 00:10:39.93\00:10:43.07 if they become sick in anyway if they take 00:10:43.47\00:10:46.31 contrast media, that these patients have to be 00:10:46.31\00:10:49.48 taken off these mediations ahead 00:10:49.48\00:10:52.15 or during the time their illness that they don't 00:10:52.15\00:10:55.08 proceed into this very critical acidosis state 00:10:55.52\00:10:59.69 where people actually can lose their lives. 00:10:59.69\00:11:01.59 Right, and we know that diabetes is a very serious 00:11:01.59\00:11:04.99 disease because of the complications 00:11:05.33\00:11:07.30 and 80 percent of people who have diabetes 00:11:07.30\00:11:10.93 are dying from heart disease. 00:11:10.93\00:11:12.40 Why do we see such a high prevalence of 00:11:13.00\00:11:15.67 heart disease been associated with diabetes? 00:11:16.14\00:11:19.44 Well, with insulin resistance which 00:11:20.31\00:11:23.45 takes place in the diabetic you get a lot 00:11:23.81\00:11:26.61 of changes Lee, that takes place in the 00:11:26.61\00:11:30.29 actual a blood parameters. 00:11:30.29\00:11:32.45 There is raise in fibrinogen levels 00:11:32.72\00:11:35.42 which is a protein precursor to form 00:11:35.42\00:11:39.36 clots in the blood. We have a problem with 00:11:39.36\00:11:43.93 increase inflammatory changes in the walls 00:11:43.93\00:11:47.34 of the vessels with insulin resistance, 00:11:47.34\00:11:49.70 we can measure with this by such parameters 00:11:49.70\00:11:52.54 in the blood is CRP, C-reactive protein. 00:11:52.54\00:11:56.51 So, there is an inflammatory damage 00:11:57.61\00:12:01.58 done with increase in free-radicals 00:12:01.58\00:12:04.42 in the diabetic. This is all changing the 00:12:04.82\00:12:07.72 normal blood flow and blood supply. 00:12:07.72\00:12:10.09 You're building up now plaque in the walls 00:12:10.79\00:12:14.10 of the vessels, there is a raise in 00:12:14.10\00:12:16.23 cholesterol synthesis, a raise in LDL cholesterol 00:12:16.23\00:12:20.37 in the diabetic. A lowering of 00:12:20.37\00:12:22.90 HDL the good cholesterol and all of these things 00:12:22.90\00:12:26.91 are contributing to a impairment of blood 00:12:26.91\00:12:32.65 supply to the organs. And for the heart 00:12:32.65\00:12:36.28 or to the brain that results in the coronary 00:12:36.28\00:12:40.19 artery disease, the carotid artery disease 00:12:40.19\00:12:44.39 which leads to stroke and so forth. 00:12:44.39\00:12:46.29 Would you say that the biggest factor 00:12:46.76\00:12:49.70 of causing diabetes would be one's diet. 00:12:50.00\00:12:53.13 It is, yes probably one of the biggest, 00:12:53.87\00:12:56.94 now there are certainly we have to recognize 00:12:56.94\00:13:00.38 genetic vulnerabilities. Diabetes does have 00:13:00.38\00:13:05.08 certain clustering according to that 00:13:05.38\00:13:07.78 genetic background. But, given the wrong 00:13:07.78\00:13:12.19 lifestyle with that genetic pre-disposition 00:13:12.19\00:13:16.42 then that's where you get into trouble. 00:13:16.89\00:13:18.63 Right, so you're saying that genetics really 00:13:18.63\00:13:21.53 low again the lifestyle pulls the trigger, 00:13:21.86\00:13:23.90 and in your experience you've been a physician 00:13:24.50\00:13:27.37 for many years. You've had a lot of people 00:13:27.37\00:13:29.20 come through Wildwood and had treatment 00:13:29.20\00:13:32.67 as a diabetic, in fact I believe diabetes 00:13:32.67\00:13:34.91 is one of most common things that we're dealing 00:13:34.91\00:13:37.38 with on a day to day basis. How successful 00:13:37.38\00:13:40.38 have you seen people change especially 00:13:40.38\00:13:44.19 with the sugar level once they make these changes. 00:13:44.19\00:13:46.52 Yeah, some change quite quickly 00:13:46.72\00:13:50.93 and dramatically. I remember one individual 00:13:50.93\00:13:53.60 that came to us he was on over a 100 units 00:13:53.60\00:13:57.47 of insulin a day. And we worked with him, 00:13:57.47\00:14:01.94 changing the lifestyle parameters, the diet, 00:14:02.47\00:14:05.47 getting more exercise, weight reduction 00:14:05.47\00:14:07.78 and within a three week period Lee, 00:14:08.28\00:14:10.28 he was off of all insulin with normal blood sugars. 00:14:10.28\00:14:13.68 And I wish I could tell you that was end 00:14:14.52\00:14:16.12 of the story, but he went home 00:14:16.12\00:14:18.32 and he thought I'm doing so well, 00:14:19.19\00:14:21.72 I'll just go back and start having a little bit 00:14:22.26\00:14:25.13 of the other type of lifestyle and within 00:14:25.13\00:14:28.70 some months he was right back again 00:14:28.70\00:14:31.27 in our center again on the same amount of insulin. 00:14:31.70\00:14:34.80 But, the Lord is good and very patient with us 00:14:35.50\00:14:38.01 and again we worked with him 00:14:38.01\00:14:39.37 and the same thing happened. 00:14:39.37\00:14:40.78 He came off of his insulin. He had normal glucose 00:14:41.08\00:14:44.51 levels and he was very, very thankful, amen. 00:14:44.51\00:14:47.68 When he went home I'm hoping that 00:14:47.68\00:14:48.82 he continued to stay with the program, 00:14:48.82\00:14:51.59 praise the Lord. Others may not always have 00:14:51.59\00:14:54.39 that dramatic change and I would want to 00:14:54.39\00:14:58.99 encourage anyone who has diabetes 00:14:58.99\00:15:02.63 not to be disappointed. If at first, you're not 00:15:02.63\00:15:05.60 seeing those kinds of changes because 00:15:05.60\00:15:07.74 you know nature's way of healing are gradual, 00:15:08.50\00:15:12.27 right, these processes and even though 00:15:13.04\00:15:16.01 the Lord is orchestrating all of this. 00:15:16.01\00:15:18.21 We didn't get sick over night, right 00:15:18.21\00:15:21.32 and may not be that overnight we are seeing 00:15:21.32\00:15:23.15 everything just coming back to normal. 00:15:23.15\00:15:25.25 But, for those people who will persevere 00:15:25.72\00:15:28.32 with a good lifestyle change program, 00:15:28.89\00:15:31.66 it's not a question of if there is gonna be 00:15:31.66\00:15:34.30 improvement we know there will be, right. 00:15:34.30\00:15:36.83 It's just giving the Lord time to work 00:15:36.83\00:15:39.07 in these bodies. Right, and it seems the ones 00:15:39.07\00:15:41.40 that are, that are further off the path 00:15:41.40\00:15:44.04 they were on a terrible program that 00:15:44.04\00:15:45.64 seem to do better, as they make some 00:15:45.64\00:15:48.24 of those changes, I remember we were at 00:15:48.24\00:15:50.68 the Kansas city doing a program 00:15:50.68\00:15:52.28 and we had a gentlemen that came in, and I call 00:15:53.05\00:15:55.55 him a walking time bomb, you could hear 00:15:55.55\00:15:57.95 him come in, you could hear him labor, 00:15:57.95\00:15:59.75 every breath he took you could hear. 00:15:59.75\00:16:02.49 And he had so much medicine with him, 00:16:03.09\00:16:05.09 he used to carry around a bag of medicine, 00:16:05.09\00:16:07.10 you can make breakfast cereal out of all 00:16:07.10\00:16:09.16 these medicines. I mean he would take two hours 00:16:09.16\00:16:11.77 just to put his medications in the 00:16:11.77\00:16:14.24 right order, yeah. And I was afraid to tell 00:16:14.24\00:16:19.54 him of some lifestyle changes because 00:16:19.54\00:16:21.84 I felt well if he changes too rapidly he could 00:16:21.84\00:16:25.81 brought them out, and he could go into a coma. 00:16:25.81\00:16:28.25 And anyway we worked with this gentleman 00:16:28.75\00:16:31.02 and in just five days, he went from 202 units 00:16:31.45\00:16:37.89 of insulin that was a minimum he took, 00:16:37.89\00:16:39.86 202 to 225 plus 2000 mg of metformin. 00:16:39.86\00:16:44.33 He was off 200 units in just five days, 00:16:44.73\00:16:47.80 and it was astounding to me just chaining 00:16:47.80\00:16:50.91 his diet alone, he wasn't even 00:16:50.91\00:16:52.17 up to exercising yet. But, it was amazing to see 00:16:52.17\00:16:55.71 that and so for those who maybe on a good 00:16:55.71\00:17:00.22 program already you may not see as much 00:17:00.22\00:17:02.72 change but if you keep persisting God surely 00:17:02.72\00:17:05.89 will bless and I think that's a message 00:17:05.89\00:17:07.79 we want to get through. 00:17:07.79\00:17:08.76 What is the danger of leaving things too long, 00:17:09.29\00:17:12.46 you know often we get people come into the 00:17:12.46\00:17:14.56 lifestyle center, they've already been have 00:17:14.56\00:17:17.07 warning after warning and they've just kept 00:17:17.07\00:17:19.60 pushing themselves and nature has given 00:17:19.60\00:17:23.34 away what are some of the dangers of leaving 00:17:23.34\00:17:25.67 things too late from a blood sugar perspective? 00:17:26.14\00:17:29.98 Well, the more damage that you accrue over 00:17:30.38\00:17:34.38 the years then the harder it is to 00:17:34.38\00:17:36.35 see that reversal. And for the diabetic like 00:17:36.35\00:17:40.19 let's take the type II diabetic, 00:17:40.19\00:17:42.32 their primary problem initially is insulin 00:17:43.09\00:17:46.83 resistance now they may have a little bit 00:17:46.83\00:17:48.83 of beta cell abnormality, that's the cells that 00:17:48.83\00:17:51.67 produce the insulin in the pancreas. 00:17:51.67\00:17:53.60 They may have a little dysfunction, 00:17:54.00\00:17:55.70 but the longer that this process of insulin 00:17:55.70\00:17:59.24 resistance goes on and the blood sugars 00:17:59.24\00:18:03.08 are remaining higher there is an element 00:18:03.08\00:18:06.65 of glucose toxicity that ends up in damaging 00:18:06.65\00:18:10.65 even the pancreas, right. So, that there is last 00:18:10.65\00:18:14.16 production of insulin, so now you've got two 00:18:14.16\00:18:17.49 major problems you see, not just insulin 00:18:17.76\00:18:19.96 resistance but now you've got lower 00:18:19.96\00:18:22.80 levels of insulin. And so we have to caution 00:18:22.80\00:18:28.04 people that the earlier you can intervene 00:18:28.04\00:18:31.91 in these abnormal metabolic processes. 00:18:31.91\00:18:36.38 The easier it is to see return to normal, 00:18:36.38\00:18:39.85 yes, the Lord can do anything right? Amen, 00:18:40.65\00:18:43.69 and He can reverse even those individuals 00:18:43.69\00:18:46.59 that are way far advanced, if that's well, 00:18:46.59\00:18:49.19 but we don't wanna attempt the Lord. 00:18:49.82\00:18:51.49 We want to try to do everything 00:18:51.93\00:18:53.76 we can as early as we can to prevent 00:18:53.76\00:18:56.56 further damage in the body. 00:18:56.56\00:18:58.40 And I believe the studies are showing 00:18:58.90\00:19:01.20 that the average person that is getting 00:19:01.20\00:19:05.04 diagnosed as a diabetic has already wiped out 00:19:05.04\00:19:08.94 a half of the beta cell function that make the 00:19:09.48\00:19:13.45 insulin to help control the blood sugar. 00:19:13.45\00:19:15.85 So, it pays to get it early, amen. 00:19:15.85\00:19:18.62 Let's talk a little bit about some of the 00:19:19.19\00:19:22.06 common misunderstandings of diabetes you know often 00:19:22.49\00:19:25.39 we hear about that, we shouldn't have fruit 00:19:25.39\00:19:28.06 in our diet, as a diabetic 00:19:28.06\00:19:29.66 could you maybe elaborate a little one that? 00:19:30.73\00:19:32.77 well the concern is in the diabetic 00:19:34.04\00:19:38.34 is the fat, we've talked about that, 00:19:38.34\00:19:40.88 but also the simple sugars, free sugars 00:19:41.28\00:19:44.78 we call them. That are not complex as the 00:19:44.78\00:19:48.28 Lord has made them with fiber 00:19:48.28\00:19:50.09 and other plant material. Fruits, yes, 00:19:50.09\00:19:54.52 a diabetic has to be careful with, 00:19:54.52\00:19:56.42 you can't eat too much, but fruits are so good. 00:19:56.42\00:20:00.13 They have so many antioxidants, 00:20:00.13\00:20:02.06 so many vitamins and the diabetic needs those. 00:20:02.06\00:20:04.97 So, we don't limit the use of fruits and say, 00:20:05.43\00:20:10.97 a diabetic should never have fruits. 00:20:10.97\00:20:13.17 We have to fat rate into their carbohydrate plan. 00:20:13.17\00:20:15.84 But, the main areas that we want the diabetic 00:20:16.44\00:20:19.95 to avoid are those simple sugars. 00:20:19.95\00:20:21.98 That are often added to processed foods 00:20:22.42\00:20:25.29 that are in the confectioneries, 00:20:25.29\00:20:27.62 the baked items, the pies you now the cakes, 00:20:28.02\00:20:31.86 the cookies those kinds of things. 00:20:31.86\00:20:34.00 But, complex carbohydrates that 00:20:34.36\00:20:37.63 is the sugars that are the complexed with the fiber 00:20:37.63\00:20:40.60 and other plant material. The diabetic needs 00:20:40.60\00:20:44.07 those and we encourage those. 00:20:44.07\00:20:45.81 And it's important to have that fiber in the fruit, 00:20:45.81\00:20:49.44 it help time release the sugar into the cell. 00:20:49.44\00:20:52.88 You know some diabetes like to use juicing, 00:20:53.45\00:20:56.62 is that any problem to the sugar levels? 00:20:57.19\00:21:00.36 Well, very definitely because when you juice 00:21:00.82\00:21:03.76 unless you have that fiber, if you're juicing 00:21:03.76\00:21:06.26 and you're removing all that fiber then you've 00:21:06.26\00:21:08.36 got a liquid medium with glucose that would 00:21:08.36\00:21:10.83 just go directly into the blood system, 00:21:10.83\00:21:14.10 the stream and raise your blood sugar 00:21:14.10\00:21:17.34 to higher levels after ingestion. 00:21:17.67\00:21:20.21 So, we don't encourage juices for the diabetic. 00:21:20.21\00:21:23.35 Right, now why would we often put even 00:21:23.35\00:21:26.95 diabetics on a two meal a day program. 00:21:26.95\00:21:29.95 You know some people will be quite concerned 00:21:30.35\00:21:32.59 about that, we often here about having 00:21:32.59\00:21:34.29 five or six meals a day, it's very common 00:21:34.66\00:21:37.86 knowledge that people need to be on this 00:21:37.86\00:21:41.60 program so they don't burn them out 00:21:41.60\00:21:43.13 and that's often the concern of the physician. 00:21:43.13\00:21:44.97 Can people last on a two meal a day program, 00:21:46.50\00:21:49.87 is that best for even the sugar 00:21:49.87\00:21:52.17 level of the diabetic? By all means two meals 00:21:52.17\00:21:55.48 are better then three especially for those 00:21:55.48\00:21:57.58 who are over their ideal weight. 00:21:57.95\00:21:59.88 What we have to make certain though is that 00:22:00.62\00:22:03.72 when we do that we are cutting back 00:22:03.72\00:22:06.25 on their medications. Whether it's the drugs 00:22:06.79\00:22:09.82 or the insulin or whatever we're giving, 00:22:09.82\00:22:12.86 and this is where it's very necessary for 00:22:12.86\00:22:15.26 a person who is making these changes 00:22:15.26\00:22:17.37 to be under some medical surveillance. 00:22:17.77\00:22:20.67 So, that we can adjust the medication appropriate 00:22:21.07\00:22:26.54 to their dietary intake, sometimes we almost 00:22:26.54\00:22:31.71 fall into this category of chasing the food intake 00:22:31.71\00:22:36.22 with the medicines by the insulin you see, right. 00:22:36.42\00:22:39.29 But, if you will cut that back then you can also 00:22:39.29\00:22:42.59 then cut back on the amount of food consumed 00:22:42.59\00:22:46.49 and if it is primarily plant-based you've 00:22:46.90\00:22:49.73 gotten a lot more fiber it's lower in calories 00:22:49.73\00:22:52.70 and the diabetic then can lose weight better, 00:22:52.70\00:22:55.77 which is the primary problem you remember 00:22:56.40\00:22:59.04 the increased weight has contributed 00:22:59.04\00:23:01.01 to the insulin resistance. So, you're helping them 00:23:01.01\00:23:03.81 to lose weight as well as controlling 00:23:03.81\00:23:07.08 the blood sugar. I think it's important to also 00:23:07.08\00:23:10.72 keep in mind that if you do go low that don't 00:23:10.72\00:23:14.52 starve yourself either, if you need something 00:23:14.52\00:23:16.96 to pickup your sugar level temporally to get 00:23:16.96\00:23:19.83 you back on track, sure. Now someone that's 00:23:19.83\00:23:22.76 looking at this from home they maybe 00:23:22.76\00:23:24.43 wondering how do I get on this program 00:23:24.43\00:23:26.90 you know they may desire to get off some 00:23:27.20\00:23:29.94 of the medication as they make some of 00:23:29.94\00:23:31.84 these lifestyle changes, how do you as physician 00:23:31.84\00:23:35.18 know when it safe to transition people from 00:23:35.18\00:23:39.68 you know medication on to you know to reduce 00:23:40.98\00:23:44.49 that and to be able to have confidence 00:23:44.49\00:23:47.86 so they able to continue on a safe program. 00:23:47.86\00:23:51.13 Well, first of all Lee would suggest that 00:23:52.46\00:23:55.26 no diabetic that's on a treatment plan change 00:23:55.26\00:24:01.54 that plan without first consulting 00:24:01.54\00:24:03.57 with their physicians, amen. So, that the 00:24:03.57\00:24:05.57 physician knows exactly what this person is doing, 00:24:05.57\00:24:08.38 even in dietary changes. What I also though 00:24:08.38\00:24:13.88 might recommend is that for those who lets say 00:24:13.88\00:24:18.19 can't find that's support system in a home place, 00:24:18.19\00:24:23.86 that coming to a lifestyle center where physicians 00:24:24.23\00:24:28.03 who are well trained in lifestyle medicine 00:24:28.03\00:24:30.63 can address these patients and their needs 00:24:31.00\00:24:33.34 individually entailer a plan from the 00:24:33.34\00:24:36.64 nutritional aspect, exercise, you know all of 00:24:36.64\00:24:40.98 these lifestyle changes with a gradual reduction 00:24:40.98\00:24:45.11 in medications while we maybe also adding 00:24:45.11\00:24:49.75 some other natural agents that may 00:24:49.75\00:24:52.99 help with the blood sugar control. 00:24:52.99\00:24:54.69 So, when people come to lifestyle center 00:24:54.99\00:24:58.03 such as Wildwood we don't just immediately 00:24:58.03\00:25:00.60 cut them off, definitely, the medication but 00:25:00.60\00:25:03.16 we're trying to make lifestyle changes 00:25:03.16\00:25:05.73 while we're reducing some of these medication. 00:25:05.73\00:25:08.44 As we see improvement taking place in individual, 00:25:08.44\00:25:10.97 sure. Now let's talk for a moment for about 00:25:10.97\00:25:13.78 the spiritual motivation of a diabetic 00:25:13.78\00:25:18.08 and this would go for every condition. 00:25:18.08\00:25:20.15 Well, how important do you see the spiritual 00:25:21.82\00:25:24.65 component in making changes to one's lifestyle? 00:25:24.65\00:25:28.62 I see it as very key, because we can 00:25:29.72\00:25:33.66 educate people, we can tell them what 00:25:33.96\00:25:36.46 to do. But, the problem often is they 00:25:36.46\00:25:41.24 cannot find the strength to follow through, 00:25:41.24\00:25:43.87 right. And this is where only that relationship 00:25:44.21\00:25:47.81 with Christ can give them that divine power. 00:25:47.81\00:25:50.88 They may want to do well, they may 00:25:51.48\00:25:54.05 try to do well, but they often find themselves 00:25:54.05\00:25:57.59 falling back into those old patterns. 00:25:58.42\00:26:00.99 And so we tell our patients look we're not 00:26:01.89\00:26:04.49 interested in just trying harder. 00:26:04.49\00:26:06.39 But, we will encourage them to make this 00:26:07.23\00:26:10.53 lifestyle change a matter of prayer 00:26:10.53\00:26:13.03 and to discuss this with the Lord and ask him 00:26:13.03\00:26:16.17 for special grace to change these habits 00:26:16.17\00:26:19.71 because we can't really change ourselves, 00:26:19.71\00:26:21.51 only the Lord can do that. 00:26:21.94\00:26:23.18 Right, I think that's a very point to those 00:26:23.18\00:26:26.58 who are listening that our confidence really 00:26:26.58\00:26:29.18 has to be in a pie outside of ourselves 00:26:29.18\00:26:31.35 because we ourselves got us into a situation 00:26:31.35\00:26:35.22 where we don't have the strength, 00:26:35.22\00:26:37.26 we don't have the ability to change. 00:26:37.26\00:26:40.03 But as we lean on Him, as we trust in Him 00:26:40.03\00:26:42.70 then we see the motivation comes 00:26:43.26\00:26:46.37 to be able to make those changes. 00:26:46.37\00:26:48.24 Alright, maybe you could share a little bit 00:26:48.24\00:26:51.51 from your background you've seen many people 00:26:51.97\00:26:54.28 who've come they followed the program 00:26:54.28\00:26:56.61 and they've started to make some of these 00:26:57.18\00:26:59.55 changes and of course everyone comes different 00:26:59.55\00:27:03.42 you know with different problems, 00:27:04.15\00:27:05.92 different severity and the condition, 00:27:05.92\00:27:07.59 but what do you see is the difference between 00:27:07.96\00:27:09.99 those who are on a good program 00:27:09.99\00:27:13.36 and you know they've made some of these changes 00:27:13.90\00:27:16.87 but aren't doing as well, compared to those 00:27:16.87\00:27:19.87 who were really seem to go all the way, 00:27:19.87\00:27:21.64 what seems to be the main difference? 00:27:21.64\00:27:23.51 When people leave our center, they then go back 00:27:24.34\00:27:28.94 in to their home environment 00:27:32.35\00:27:33.35 Where things are not always as conducive 00:27:33.35\00:27:35.12 to making changes. Right. They will often encounter 00:27:35.12\00:27:40.99 let's say added stress from their work programs, 00:27:40.99\00:27:46.90 schedules are not as easy for them to follow 00:27:46.90\00:27:49.86 like with exercise routine and so fourth 00:27:49.86\00:27:52.47 and so just making sure that they're sticking 00:27:52.80\00:27:55.84 to the program when they go home, 00:27:55.84\00:27:58.14 this is what will make the difference. 00:27:58.14\00:27:59.74 This is Lee Wellard, Wildwood Lifestyle Center. 00:28:00.74\00:28:03.24 Thank you for joining us today, 00:28:03.24\00:28:04.51 I hope it's been a blessing to you, 00:28:04.51\00:28:05.88 please join us next time on Wonderfully Made. 00:28:05.88\00:28:08.52
