The following program presents principles 00:00:01.98\00:00:02.95 designed to promote good health 00:00:02.96\00:00:04.10 and is not intended to take the place 00:00:04.50\00:00:06.02 of personalized professional care. 00:00:06.03\00:00:07.86 The opinions and ideas expressed 00:00:08.24\00:00:10.28 are those of the speaker. 00:00:10.58\00:00:11.55 Viewers are encouraged to draw their own 00:00:11.97\00:00:13.74 conclusions about the information presented. 00:00:13.75\00:00:16.10 Welcome to Wonderfully Made, 00:00:36.78\00:00:38.50 your host for today is Lee Wellard, 00:00:38.88\00:00:40.71 a lifestyle educator from Wildwood Lifestyle Center. 00:00:40.72\00:00:43.82 And today we have on the set Dr. Scott Grivas, 00:00:44.35\00:00:47.69 thank you for joining us today. Thank you. 00:00:48.05\00:00:49.99 We are going to be looking at a very 00:00:50.35\00:00:52.14 important topic today, one that is, 00:00:52.15\00:00:54.44 one of the most fastest growing debilitating 00:00:54.45\00:00:57.76 conditions in our world today, 00:00:57.77\00:00:59.08 we are going to looking at diabetes, 00:00:59.09\00:01:00.87 but in the contest of the good news of diabetes. 00:01:00.88\00:01:03.86 Dr. Grivas let's just start the program 00:01:04.39\00:01:07.68 by finding out how prevalent is diabetes, 00:01:07.69\00:01:10.86 is it something that's on the decrease? 00:01:10.87\00:01:12.62 What is it today? 00:01:13.21\00:01:14.23 I wish I could say that it is Lee, 00:01:15.14\00:01:17.02 but unfortunately no, diabetes is increasing 00:01:17.46\00:01:21.22 almost daily. I think the last estimate that 00:01:21.23\00:01:24.40 I read was probably close to 24 million Americans 00:01:24.86\00:01:28.81 are afflicted with this disease. 00:01:29.25\00:01:31.31 And also it is occurring in younger ages now, 00:01:31.80\00:01:35.88 even in children. Now tell us what are some 00:01:36.41\00:01:39.74 of the signs and symptoms of diabetes? 00:01:39.75\00:01:42.87 It can vary some actually have very little 00:01:44.45\00:01:49.02 in the way of presenting symptoms. 00:01:49.03\00:01:51.78 But, others may represent excessive thirst, 00:01:52.76\00:01:58.10 increased urination, sometimes weight 00:01:58.57\00:02:02.33 loss actually. Because of an ability 00:02:02.34\00:02:05.87 to metabolize carbohydrates, fatigue, 00:02:06.22\00:02:11.71 just general debility and weakness. 00:02:12.42\00:02:14.31 Now, there are millions of Americans 00:02:14.68\00:02:16.88 I believe that have diabetes but not even 00:02:16.89\00:02:19.41 aware that they have this problem. 00:02:19.42\00:02:21.37 How can these people identify that 00:02:22.58\00:02:25.97 they do have a problem, or do they often just wait 00:02:25.98\00:02:28.83 too long before they do something about it? 00:02:28.84\00:02:31.27 You know if you're not feeling bad you don't 00:02:31.93\00:02:34.27 usually go for checkups that's the tendency. 00:02:34.28\00:02:38.19 But, yes by simply going to your physician 00:02:38.67\00:02:42.29 or to a health clinic and having your 00:02:42.68\00:02:45.37 blood sugar checked. You can pretty much 00:02:45.38\00:02:48.80 tell whether or not you have 00:02:48.81\00:02:50.28 problems with glucose metabolism. 00:02:50.29\00:02:52.45 Right, lets just talk about glucose for a minute, 00:02:52.46\00:02:55.04 what is considered a diabetic range 00:02:55.46\00:02:58.82 when we're talking of blood sugar levels? 00:02:58.83\00:03:00.56 For fasting levels of blood glucose over 125 00:03:00.96\00:03:05.83 would be considered in the diabetic range. 00:03:06.27\00:03:08.77 Pre-diabetes probably some where 00:03:09.21\00:03:11.73 between a 100 and 125 in a fasting state 00:03:11.74\00:03:15.34 Now, when we're talking about pre-diabetes 00:03:15.74\00:03:17.60 we are talking about not full blown, 00:03:17.61\00:03:19.71 we're not there yet but we're actually on our way, 00:03:19.72\00:03:21.92 exactly. So, that can be just as dangerous 00:03:22.41\00:03:27.84 so to speak then someone who maybe 00:03:27.85\00:03:30.92 is on the low side of diabetic but they, 00:03:30.93\00:03:33.69 they're not even aware that 00:03:34.08\00:03:35.80 they have that problem. It shows you, 00:03:35.81\00:03:37.91 you're on the wrong path, and you need 00:03:37.92\00:03:40.64 to make some lifestyle changes. 00:03:40.65\00:03:42.39 Right and as sugar levels change from time to time, 00:03:42.40\00:03:45.45 so we may have a high blood sugar level at 00:03:45.88\00:03:51.02 one point but then it may not necessitate 00:03:51.03\00:03:53.99 that in fact we have diabetes but at the same 00:03:54.00\00:03:56.97 time it could mean that you know we are well 00:03:56.98\00:04:00.78 on the way to developing a lot of the complications 00:04:00.79\00:04:03.61 that diabetics have, sure. Now let's talk 00:04:03.62\00:04:06.63 about some of the complications. 00:04:06.64\00:04:08.27 What are the most serious complications 00:04:09.08\00:04:11.22 that diabetics face today? 00:04:11.23\00:04:12.62 Well, there are two class of complications 00:04:14.16\00:04:16.78 for the diabetic, we call them macrovascular 00:04:16.79\00:04:22.36 and microvascular because most of the 00:04:22.66\00:04:24.77 damage occurs in the vessels, 00:04:24.78\00:04:26.69 the large vessel complications, 00:04:27.86\00:04:30.46 we lump together as heart attacks, strokes, 00:04:31.11\00:04:36.05 peripheral vascular disease involving 00:04:36.55\00:04:39.15 the extremities that often end in 00:04:39.16\00:04:41.68 gangrenous limbs, amputations etcetera. 00:04:42.14\00:04:46.08 The microvascular complications would be 00:04:46.98\00:04:50.48 problems with the eyes. We call it retinopathy, 00:04:51.91\00:04:55.99 an involvement of the small vessels of the eye. 00:04:56.00\00:04:59.07 The small vessels that go into the kidney 00:04:59.43\00:05:02.01 that result in the term is nephropathy 00:05:02.02\00:05:05.67 or kidney insufficiency. And this leads to a very, 00:05:06.12\00:05:11.54 very high incidence of end stage renal failure 00:05:11.55\00:05:15.14 and dialysis complications. The other would be 00:05:15.66\00:05:19.28 neuropathy, the small vessels that 00:05:19.29\00:05:22.18 carry blood to the nerves. 00:05:22.52\00:05:24.93 They're impaired and so you start to get ischemic 00:05:25.42\00:05:28.45 or a lack of blood changes to those nerves 00:05:28.54\00:05:32.77 and they begin to malfunction, 00:05:32.78\00:05:35.52 results in pain, discomfiture in the 00:05:36.07\00:05:39.56 legs and feet. A feeling of burnings, 00:05:39.57\00:05:42.96 sometimes numbness, just discomfort. 00:05:42.97\00:05:46.74 Now, let's get to the, the cause of the problem 00:05:48.05\00:05:50.55 we've seen diabetes dramatically increase 00:05:50.56\00:05:53.26 especially around the mid 1990s. 00:05:53.27\00:05:56.99 What do you believe is the cause 00:05:57.86\00:05:59.60 or the causes of this problem? 00:05:59.61\00:06:01.90 Well, you know we used to think that diabetes 00:06:03.34\00:06:05.93 was a sugar disease, right. 00:06:05.94\00:06:07.49 But, as our understating has increased 00:06:08.63\00:06:12.34 we understand that's really not the case, 00:06:12.35\00:06:14.36 the complication is rising blood sugar. 00:06:14.66\00:06:16.95 But, basically leads it's too many calories 00:06:18.27\00:06:21.59 too much fat in the diet especially animal fats. 00:06:22.21\00:06:25.72 And as people get larger and larger, 00:06:26.32\00:06:29.02 they develop more resistance to their 00:06:29.03\00:06:32.58 indigenous production of insulin, and so you can't 00:06:32.59\00:06:35.53 get glucose into the cell and so the cell then 00:06:35.54\00:06:40.53 it starts from its fuel source but the 00:06:40.54\00:06:44.05 blood sugar begins to raise in 00:06:44.06\00:06:46.52 the blood circulation and this is what is 00:06:47.49\00:06:51.97 very damaging, right to the vessels. 00:06:51.98\00:06:54.11 Now I understand that not all fats are 00:06:54.43\00:06:56.11 created equal, so when we talking about fats 00:06:56.12\00:06:58.50 what particular fats that we're really taking about? 00:06:58.51\00:07:01.30 Primarily the animal fats, cholesterol saturated 00:07:01.71\00:07:06.56 fats that we find that Americans are consuming 00:07:06.57\00:07:10.32 in such a large quantities today. 00:07:10.33\00:07:12.59 Right, right and what you believe has contributed 00:07:12.60\00:07:15.97 to us consuming more of these fats? 00:07:15.98\00:07:18.97 Well, we now have an increase in the fast foods 00:07:19.82\00:07:25.75 that are being offered to people 00:07:26.70\00:07:29.53 as a food substitute. And we've also gone step away 00:07:29.54\00:07:34.85 from ingesting our food in the most natural way, 00:07:35.27\00:07:39.61 we're processing, we are adding things to our 00:07:39.62\00:07:43.19 foods and so forth. So, it is not just as the Lord 00:07:43.20\00:07:46.52 originally gave us, right. We have a lot of 00:07:46.53\00:07:49.72 added sugars, a lot of added fats 00:07:49.73\00:07:51.98 and so forth animal fats. 00:07:51.99\00:07:53.49 It was interesting to me when I came across 00:07:53.50\00:07:56.03 some research about the island of Crete in Greece 00:07:56.04\00:07:59.01 that they have 40 percent of their calories 00:07:59.40\00:08:01.78 from fat and yet they have one of the lowest 00:08:02.21\00:08:05.01 incidence of heart disease in the world 00:08:05.02\00:08:06.65 simply because of the type of fat that they were 00:08:06.94\00:08:09.50 using was predominantly plant-based, yes such as 00:08:09.51\00:08:12.37 the olive and so this can be more of a protective 00:08:12.38\00:08:15.47 role rather than getting these other types 00:08:15.48\00:08:18.29 of denatured fats in more of a process form. 00:08:18.30\00:08:21.77 Sure, now let's talk for a minute about some 00:08:21.78\00:08:26.59 of the medications that people are on, 00:08:26.60\00:08:30.68 it's predominately insulin or metformin. 00:08:31.06\00:08:34.70 What are some of the complications that could 00:08:35.02\00:08:37.71 arise with people using these for long term? 00:08:37.72\00:08:41.10 Well, earlier on when we first began using 00:08:42.40\00:08:46.03 the oral glucose agents, we found studies 00:08:46.04\00:08:51.09 showing that there was actually an increase, 00:08:51.10\00:08:53.26 a raise in the cardiovascular 00:08:53.27\00:08:55.04 complications with diabetes. 00:08:55.05\00:08:57.00 And increased deaths, we are still though primarily 00:08:57.01\00:09:01.61 using agents that are like the Sulfonylurea drugs 00:09:01.62\00:09:07.37 that actually help to stimulate insulin release 00:09:07.73\00:09:14.65 and secretion by the pancreas. 00:09:14.66\00:09:16.32 We now have those that are called insulin 00:09:16.68\00:09:19.74 sensitizers that try to help with decreasing 00:09:19.75\00:09:23.55 the insulin resistance at a cellular level. 00:09:23.56\00:09:26.49 We do have new agents, 00:09:27.40\00:09:29.48 now we've got they what are they call 00:09:29.77\00:09:31.21 the incretins, which are to, they're given by 00:09:31.22\00:09:34.26 injection to help stimulate insulin secretion 00:09:34.27\00:09:39.07 via hormonal pathways in the digestive system. 00:09:39.08\00:09:42.11 Anyway we have insulin. 00:09:42.45\00:09:43.71 We've got other agents that help to retard 00:09:44.42\00:09:47.76 the breakdown of carbohydrates 00:09:47.77\00:09:50.27 in the GI tract, but with all of those agents 00:09:50.28\00:09:57.66 especially the drug agents. 00:09:57.96\00:09:59.76 Not so much the insulin, there is a raising 00:09:59.77\00:10:02.68 incidents of side-effects from changing in changes 00:10:02.69\00:10:07.61 in electrolyte, balance in the blood, nausea, 00:10:07.62\00:10:16.65 GI tract, disturbances like diarrhea with some 00:10:17.55\00:10:22.38 of these agents. Metformin a very common agent now, 00:10:22.39\00:10:27.79 one of the biggest problems there is the 00:10:27.80\00:10:30.01 incidence of what we call like lactic acidosis. 00:10:30.02\00:10:35.28 So, we have to be very careful that 00:10:35.58\00:10:37.45 these people are warned when they are on 00:10:37.46\00:10:39.96 this medication. If they get like a febrile illness, 00:10:39.97\00:10:43.12 if they become sick in anyway if they take 00:10:43.51\00:10:46.33 contrast media, that these patients have to be 00:10:46.34\00:10:49.51 taken off these mediations ahead 00:10:49.52\00:10:52.17 or during the time their illness that they don't 00:10:52.18\00:10:55.12 proceed into this very critical acidosis state 00:10:55.54\00:10:59.71 where people actually can lose their lives. 00:10:59.72\00:11:01.59 Right, and we know that diabetes is a very serious 00:11:01.60\00:11:05.02 disease because of the complications 00:11:05.34\00:11:07.33 and 80 percent of people who have diabetes 00:11:07.34\00:11:10.97 are dying from heart disease. 00:11:10.98\00:11:12.46 Why do we see such a high prevalence of 00:11:13.05\00:11:15.70 heart disease been associated with diabetes? 00:11:16.17\00:11:19.49 Well, with insulin resistance which 00:11:20.34\00:11:23.49 takes place in the diabetic you get a lot 00:11:23.86\00:11:26.63 of changes Lee, that takes place in the 00:11:26.64\00:11:30.29 actual a blood parameters. 00:11:30.30\00:11:32.49 There is raise in fibrinogen levels 00:11:32.76\00:11:35.45 which is a protein precursor to form 00:11:35.46\00:11:39.38 clots in the blood. We have a problem with 00:11:39.39\00:11:43.97 increase inflammatory changes in the walls 00:11:43.98\00:11:47.38 of the vessels with insulin resistance, 00:11:47.39\00:11:49.73 we can measure with this by such parameters 00:11:49.74\00:11:52.56 in the blood is CRP, C-reactive protein. 00:11:52.57\00:11:56.55 So, there is an inflammatory damage 00:11:57.64\00:12:01.61 done with increase in free-radicals 00:12:01.62\00:12:04.45 in the diabetic. This is all changing the 00:12:04.86\00:12:07.74 normal blood flow and blood supply. 00:12:07.75\00:12:10.10 You're building up now plaque in the walls 00:12:10.82\00:12:14.10 of the vessels, there is a raise in 00:12:14.11\00:12:16.27 cholesterol synthesis, a raise in LDL cholesterol 00:12:16.28\00:12:20.41 in the diabetic. A lowering of 00:12:20.42\00:12:22.95 HDL the good cholesterol and all of these things 00:12:22.96\00:12:26.93 are contributing to a impairment of blood 00:12:26.94\00:12:32.67 supply to the organs. And for the heart 00:12:32.68\00:12:36.29 or to the brain that results in the coronary 00:12:36.30\00:12:40.22 artery disease, the carotid artery disease 00:12:40.23\00:12:44.42 which leads to stroke and so forth. 00:12:44.43\00:12:46.31 Would you say that the biggest factor 00:12:46.79\00:12:49.74 of causing diabetes would be one's diet. 00:12:50.06\00:12:53.17 It is, yes probably one of the biggest, 00:12:53.93\00:12:56.96 now there are certainly we have to recognize 00:12:56.97\00:13:00.42 genetic vulnerabilities. Diabetes does have 00:13:00.43\00:13:05.10 certain clustering according to that 00:13:05.40\00:13:07.82 genetic background. But, given the wrong 00:13:07.83\00:13:12.20 lifestyle with that genetic pre-disposition 00:13:12.21\00:13:16.44 then that's where you get into trouble. 00:13:16.91\00:13:18.64 Right, so you're saying that genetics really 00:13:18.65\00:13:21.58 low again the lifestyle pulls the trigger, 00:13:21.93\00:13:23.95 and in your experience you've been a physician 00:13:24.56\00:13:27.39 for many years. You've had a lot of people 00:13:27.40\00:13:29.24 come through Wildwood and had treatment 00:13:29.25\00:13:32.71 as a diabetic, in fact I believe diabetes 00:13:32.72\00:13:34.94 is one of most common things that we're dealing 00:13:34.95\00:13:37.40 with on a day to day basis. How successful 00:13:37.41\00:13:40.41 have you seen people change especially 00:13:40.42\00:13:44.22 with the sugar level once they make these changes. 00:13:44.23\00:13:46.56 Yeah, some change quite quickly 00:13:46.74\00:13:50.93 and dramatically. I remember one individual 00:13:50.94\00:13:53.59 that came to us he was on over a 100 units 00:13:53.60\00:13:57.50 of insulin a day. And we worked with him, 00:13:57.51\00:14:01.98 changing the lifestyle parameters, the diet, 00:14:02.52\00:14:05.49 getting more exercise, weight reduction 00:14:05.50\00:14:07.83 and within a three week period Lee, 00:14:08.31\00:14:10.32 he was off of all insulin with normal blood sugars. 00:14:10.33\00:14:13.71 And I wish I could tell you that was end 00:14:14.54\00:14:16.14 of the story, but he went home 00:14:16.15\00:14:18.35 and he thought I'm doing so well, 00:14:19.21\00:14:21.76 I'll just go back and start having a little bit 00:14:22.28\00:14:25.14 of the other type of lifestyle and within 00:14:25.15\00:14:28.75 some months he was right back again 00:14:28.76\00:14:31.30 in our center again on the same amount of insulin. 00:14:31.74\00:14:34.85 But, the Lord is good and very patient with us 00:14:35.56\00:14:38.04 and again we worked with him 00:14:38.05\00:14:39.41 and the same thing happened. 00:14:39.42\00:14:40.82 He came off of his insulin. He had normal glucose 00:14:41.13\00:14:44.53 levels and he was very, very thankful, amen. 00:14:44.54\00:14:47.71 When he went home I'm hoping that 00:14:47.72\00:14:48.84 he continued to stay with the program, 00:14:48.85\00:14:51.62 praise the Lord. Others may not always have 00:14:51.63\00:14:54.40 that dramatic change and I would want to 00:14:54.41\00:14:59.01 encourage anyone who has diabetes 00:14:59.02\00:15:02.67 not to be disappointed. If at first, you're not 00:15:02.68\00:15:05.65 seeing those kinds of changes because 00:15:05.66\00:15:07.78 you know nature's way of healing are gradual, 00:15:08.54\00:15:12.30 right, these processes and even though 00:15:13.07\00:15:16.04 the Lord is orchestrating all of this. 00:15:16.05\00:15:18.24 We didn't get sick over night, right 00:15:18.25\00:15:21.35 and may not be that overnight we are seeing 00:15:21.36\00:15:23.18 everything just coming back to normal. 00:15:23.19\00:15:25.29 But, for those people who will persevere 00:15:25.75\00:15:28.35 with a good lifestyle change program, 00:15:28.90\00:15:31.66 it's not a question of if there is gonna be 00:15:31.67\00:15:34.30 improvement we know there will be, right. 00:15:34.31\00:15:36.86 It's just giving the Lord time to work 00:15:36.87\00:15:39.10 in these bodies. Right, and it seems the ones 00:15:39.11\00:15:41.44 that are, that are further off the path 00:15:41.45\00:15:44.08 they were on a terrible program that 00:15:44.09\00:15:45.66 seem to do better, as they make some 00:15:45.67\00:15:48.26 of those changes, I remember we were at 00:15:48.27\00:15:50.69 the Kansas city doing a program 00:15:50.70\00:15:52.33 and we had a gentlemen that came in, and I call 00:15:53.08\00:15:55.48 him a walking time bomb, you could hear 00:15:55.59\00:15:57.97 him come in, you could hear him labor, 00:15:57.98\00:15:59.78 every breath he took you could hear. 00:15:59.79\00:16:02.53 And he had so much medicine with him, 00:16:03.12\00:16:05.10 he used to carry around a bag of medicine, 00:16:05.11\00:16:07.09 you can make breakfast cereal out of all 00:16:07.10\00:16:09.22 these medicines. I mean he would take two hours 00:16:09.23\00:16:11.81 just to put his medications in the 00:16:11.82\00:16:14.27 right order, yeah. And I was afraid to tell 00:16:14.28\00:16:19.57 him of some lifestyle changes because 00:16:19.58\00:16:21.86 I felt well if he changes too rapidly he could 00:16:21.87\00:16:25.83 brought them out, and he could go into a coma. 00:16:25.84\00:16:28.29 And anyway we worked with this gentleman 00:16:28.79\00:16:31.04 and in just five days, he went from 202 units 00:16:31.49\00:16:37.90 of insulin that was a minimum he took, 00:16:37.91\00:16:39.87 202 to 225 plus 2000 mg of metformin. 00:16:39.88\00:16:44.39 He was off 200 units in just five days, 00:16:44.78\00:16:47.85 and it was astounding to me just chaining 00:16:47.86\00:16:50.95 his diet alone, he wasn't even 00:16:50.96\00:16:52.20 up to exercising yet. But, it was amazing to see 00:16:52.21\00:16:55.74 that and so for those who maybe on a good 00:16:55.75\00:17:00.25 program already you may not see as much 00:17:00.26\00:17:02.75 change but if you keep persisting God surely 00:17:02.76\00:17:05.90 will bless and I think that's a message 00:17:05.91\00:17:07.81 we want to get through. 00:17:07.82\00:17:08.79 What is the danger of leaving things too long, 00:17:09.32\00:17:12.48 you know often we get people come into the 00:17:12.49\00:17:14.62 lifestyle center, they've already been have 00:17:14.63\00:17:17.09 warning after warning and they've just kept 00:17:17.10\00:17:19.65 pushing themselves and nature has given 00:17:19.66\00:17:23.37 away what are some of the dangers of leaving 00:17:23.38\00:17:25.71 things too late from a blood sugar perspective? 00:17:26.18\00:17:30.01 Well, the more damage that you accrue over 00:17:30.42\00:17:34.27 the years then the harder it is to 00:17:34.40\00:17:36.38 see that reversal. And for the diabetic like 00:17:36.39\00:17:40.22 let's take the type II diabetic, 00:17:40.23\00:17:42.36 their primary problem initially is insulin 00:17:43.11\00:17:46.84 resistance now they may have a little bit 00:17:46.85\00:17:48.88 of beta cell abnormality, that's the cells that 00:17:48.89\00:17:51.70 produce the insulin in the pancreas. 00:17:51.71\00:17:53.66 They may have a little dysfunction, 00:17:54.05\00:17:55.73 but the longer that this process of insulin 00:17:55.74\00:17:59.26 resistance goes on and the blood sugars 00:17:59.27\00:18:03.11 are remaining higher there is an element 00:18:03.12\00:18:06.67 of glucose toxicity that ends up in damaging 00:18:06.68\00:18:10.66 even the pancreas, right. So, that there is last 00:18:10.67\00:18:14.16 production of insulin, so now you've got two 00:18:14.17\00:18:17.52 major problems you see, not just insulin 00:18:17.77\00:18:19.96 resistance but now you've got lower 00:18:19.97\00:18:22.83 levels of insulin. And so we have to caution 00:18:22.84\00:18:28.07 people that the earlier you can intervene 00:18:28.08\00:18:31.94 in these abnormal metabolic processes. 00:18:31.95\00:18:36.41 The easier it is to see return to normal, 00:18:36.42\00:18:39.88 yes, the Lord can do anything right? Amen, 00:18:40.69\00:18:43.72 and He can reverse even those individuals 00:18:43.73\00:18:46.59 that are way far advanced, if that's well, 00:18:46.60\00:18:49.23 but we don't wanna attempt the Lord. 00:18:49.86\00:18:51.50 We want to try to do everything 00:18:51.94\00:18:53.77 we can as early as we can to prevent 00:18:53.78\00:18:56.61 further damage in the body. 00:18:56.62\00:18:58.44 And I believe the studies are showing 00:18:58.95\00:19:01.25 that the average person that is getting 00:19:01.26\00:19:05.07 diagnosed as a diabetic has already wiped out 00:19:05.08\00:19:08.97 a half of the beta cell function that make the 00:19:09.53\00:19:13.47 insulin to help control the blood sugar. 00:19:13.48\00:19:15.86 So, it pays to get it early, amen. 00:19:15.87\00:19:18.64 Let's talk a little bit about some of the 00:19:19.20\00:19:22.07 common misunderstandings of diabetes you know often 00:19:22.50\00:19:25.41 we hear about that, we shouldn't have fruit 00:19:25.42\00:19:28.09 in our diet, as a diabetic 00:19:28.10\00:19:29.73 could you maybe elaborate a little one that? 00:19:30.79\00:19:32.80 well the concern is in the diabetic 00:19:34.08\00:19:38.38 is the fat, we've talked about that, 00:19:38.39\00:19:40.92 but also the simple sugars, free sugars 00:19:41.32\00:19:44.79 we call them. That are not complex as the 00:19:44.80\00:19:48.29 Lord has made them with fiber 00:19:48.30\00:19:50.12 and other plant material. Fruits, yes, 00:19:50.13\00:19:54.55 a diabetic has to be careful with, 00:19:54.56\00:19:56.45 you can't eat too much, but fruits are so good. 00:19:56.46\00:20:00.13 They have so many antioxidants, 00:20:00.14\00:20:02.09 so many vitamins and the diabetic needs those. 00:20:02.10\00:20:05.03 So, we don't limit the use of fruits and say, 00:20:05.47\00:20:11.00 a diabetic should never have fruits. 00:20:11.01\00:20:13.19 We have to fat rate into their carbohydrate plan. 00:20:13.20\00:20:15.88 But, the main areas that we want the diabetic 00:20:16.49\00:20:19.96 to avoid are those simple sugars. 00:20:19.97\00:20:22.01 That are often added to processed foods 00:20:22.44\00:20:25.32 that are in the confectioneries, 00:20:25.33\00:20:27.65 the baked items, the pies you now the cakes, 00:20:28.05\00:20:31.87 the cookies those kinds of things. 00:20:31.88\00:20:34.04 But, complex carbohydrates that 00:20:34.42\00:20:37.68 is the sugars that are the complexed with the fiber 00:20:37.69\00:20:40.64 and other plant material. The diabetic needs 00:20:40.65\00:20:44.09 those and we encourage those. 00:20:44.10\00:20:45.83 And it's important to have that fiber in the fruit, 00:20:45.84\00:20:49.46 it help time release the sugar into the cell. 00:20:49.47\00:20:52.91 You know some diabetes like to use juicing, 00:20:53.47\00:20:56.66 is that any problem to the sugar levels? 00:20:57.23\00:21:00.38 Well, very definitely because when you juice 00:21:00.84\00:21:03.78 unless you have that fiber, if you're juicing 00:21:03.79\00:21:06.28 and you're removing all that fiber then you've 00:21:06.29\00:21:08.39 got a liquid medium with glucose that would 00:21:08.40\00:21:10.86 just go directly into the blood system, 00:21:10.87\00:21:14.13 the stream and raise your blood sugar 00:21:14.14\00:21:17.39 to higher levels after ingestion. 00:21:17.72\00:21:20.25 So, we don't encourage juices for the diabetic. 00:21:20.26\00:21:23.37 Right, now why would we often put even 00:21:23.38\00:21:26.97 diabetics on a two meal a day program. 00:21:26.98\00:21:29.98 You know some people will be quite concerned 00:21:30.38\00:21:32.62 about that, we often here about having 00:21:32.63\00:21:34.30 five or six meals a day, it's very common 00:21:34.67\00:21:37.86 knowledge that people need to be on this 00:21:37.87\00:21:41.63 program so they don't burn them out 00:21:41.64\00:21:43.17 and that's often the concern of the physician. 00:21:43.18\00:21:45.00 Can people last on a two meal a day program, 00:21:46.56\00:21:49.91 is that best for even the sugar 00:21:49.92\00:21:52.22 level of the diabetic? By all means two meals 00:21:52.23\00:21:55.50 are better then three especially for those 00:21:55.51\00:21:57.63 who are over their ideal weight. 00:21:57.98\00:21:59.92 What we have to make certain though is that 00:22:00.65\00:22:03.75 when we do that we are cutting back 00:22:03.76\00:22:06.29 on their medications. Whether it's the drugs 00:22:06.82\00:22:09.84 or the insulin or whatever we're giving, 00:22:09.85\00:22:12.88 and this is where it's very necessary for 00:22:12.89\00:22:15.32 a person who is making these changes 00:22:15.33\00:22:17.42 to be under some medical surveillance. 00:22:17.82\00:22:20.73 So, that we can adjust the medication appropriate 00:22:21.13\00:22:26.58 to their dietary intake, sometimes we almost 00:22:26.59\00:22:31.74 fall into this category of chasing the food intake 00:22:31.75\00:22:36.24 with the medicines by the insulin you see, right. 00:22:36.45\00:22:39.31 But, if you will cut that back then you can also 00:22:39.32\00:22:42.62 then cut back on the amount of food consumed 00:22:42.63\00:22:46.50 and if it is primarily plant-based you've 00:22:46.93\00:22:49.76 gotten a lot more fiber it's lower in calories 00:22:49.77\00:22:52.75 and the diabetic then can lose weight better, 00:22:52.76\00:22:55.82 which is the primary problem you remember 00:22:56.46\00:22:59.06 the increased weight has contributed 00:22:59.07\00:23:01.05 to the insulin resistance. So, you're helping them 00:23:01.06\00:23:03.85 to lose weight as well as controlling 00:23:03.86\00:23:07.11 the blood sugar. I think it's important to also 00:23:07.12\00:23:10.73 keep in mind that if you do go low that don't 00:23:10.74\00:23:14.55 starve yourself either, if you need something 00:23:14.56\00:23:16.97 to pickup your sugar level temporally to get 00:23:16.98\00:23:19.85 you back on track, sure. Now someone that's 00:23:19.86\00:23:22.82 looking at this from home they maybe 00:23:22.83\00:23:24.46 wondering how do I get on this program 00:23:24.47\00:23:26.94 you know they may desire to get off some 00:23:27.25\00:23:29.97 of the medication as they make some of 00:23:29.98\00:23:31.87 these lifestyle changes, how do you as physician 00:23:31.88\00:23:35.20 know when it safe to transition people from 00:23:35.21\00:23:39.71 you know medication on to you know to reduce 00:23:41.00\00:23:44.50 that and to be able to have confidence 00:23:44.51\00:23:47.88 so they able to continue on a safe program. 00:23:47.89\00:23:51.15 Well, first of all Lee would suggest that 00:23:52.47\00:23:55.31 no diabetic that's on a treatment plan change 00:23:55.32\00:24:01.58 that plan without first consulting 00:24:01.59\00:24:03.60 with their physicians, amen. So, that the 00:24:03.61\00:24:05.61 physician knows exactly what this person is doing, 00:24:05.62\00:24:08.40 even in dietary changes. What I also though 00:24:08.41\00:24:13.92 might recommend is that for those who lets say 00:24:13.93\00:24:18.19 can't find that's support system in a home place, 00:24:18.20\00:24:23.88 that coming to a lifestyle center where physicians 00:24:24.25\00:24:28.06 who are well trained in lifestyle medicine 00:24:28.07\00:24:30.67 can address these patients and their needs 00:24:31.04\00:24:33.38 individually entailer a plan from the 00:24:33.39\00:24:36.67 nutritional aspect, exercise, you know all of 00:24:36.68\00:24:41.00 these lifestyle changes with a gradual reduction 00:24:41.01\00:24:45.14 in medications while we maybe also adding 00:24:45.15\00:24:49.76 some other natural agents that may 00:24:49.77\00:24:53.00 help with the blood sugar control. 00:24:53.01\00:24:54.73 So, when people come to lifestyle center 00:24:55.03\00:24:58.05 such as Wildwood we don't just immediately 00:24:58.06\00:25:00.59 cut them off, definitely, the medication but 00:25:00.60\00:25:03.21 we're trying to make lifestyle changes 00:25:03.22\00:25:05.76 while we're reducing some of these medication. 00:25:05.77\00:25:08.46 As we see improvement taking place in individual, 00:25:08.47\00:25:11.00 sure. Now let's talk for a moment for about 00:25:11.01\00:25:13.81 the spiritual motivation of a diabetic 00:25:13.82\00:25:18.11 and this would go for every condition. 00:25:18.12\00:25:20.18 Well, how important do you see the spiritual 00:25:21.84\00:25:24.66 component in making changes to one's lifestyle? 00:25:24.67\00:25:28.65 I see it as very key, because we can 00:25:29.74\00:25:33.67 educate people, we can tell them what 00:25:33.99\00:25:36.49 to do. But, the problem often is they 00:25:36.50\00:25:41.26 cannot find the strength to follow through, 00:25:41.27\00:25:43.92 right. And this is where only that relationship 00:25:44.24\00:25:47.83 with Christ can give them that divine power. 00:25:47.84\00:25:50.91 They may want to do well, they may 00:25:51.51\00:25:54.06 try to do well, but they often find themselves 00:25:54.07\00:25:57.61 falling back into those old patterns. 00:25:58.53\00:26:01.01 And so we tell our patients look we're not 00:26:01.92\00:26:04.50 interested in just trying harder. 00:26:04.51\00:26:06.43 But, we will encourage them to make this 00:26:07.26\00:26:10.57 lifestyle change a matter of prayer 00:26:10.58\00:26:13.06 and to discuss this with the Lord and ask him 00:26:13.07\00:26:16.20 for special grace to change these habits 00:26:16.21\00:26:19.74 because we can't really change ourselves, 00:26:19.75\00:26:21.56 only the Lord can do that. 00:26:21.97\00:26:23.19 Right, I think that's a very point to those 00:26:23.20\00:26:26.60 who are listening that our confidence really 00:26:26.61\00:26:29.21 has to be in a pie outside of ourselves 00:26:29.22\00:26:31.38 because we ourselves got us into a situation 00:26:31.39\00:26:35.25 where we don't have the strength, 00:26:35.26\00:26:37.28 we don't have the ability to change. 00:26:37.29\00:26:40.03 But as we lean on Him, as we trust in Him 00:26:40.04\00:26:42.74 then we see the motivation comes 00:26:43.30\00:26:46.40 to be able to make those changes. 00:26:46.41\00:26:48.27 Alright, maybe you could share a little bit 00:26:48.28\00:26:51.55 from your background you've seen many people 00:26:52.01\00:26:54.30 who've come they followed the program 00:26:54.31\00:26:56.66 and they've started to make some of these 00:26:57.21\00:26:59.56 changes and of course everyone comes different 00:26:59.57\00:27:03.44 you know with different problems, 00:27:04.18\00:27:05.93 different severity and the condition, 00:27:05.94\00:27:07.60 but what do you see is the difference between 00:27:07.97\00:27:10.00 those who are on a good program 00:27:10.01\00:27:13.39 and you know they've made some of these changes 00:27:13.92\00:27:16.89 but aren't doing as well, compared to those 00:27:16.90\00:27:19.90 who were really seem to go all the way, 00:27:19.91\00:27:21.67 what seems to be the main difference? 00:27:21.68\00:27:23.56 When people leave our center, they then go back 00:27:24.39\00:27:28.99 in to their home environment 00:27:32.39\00:27:33.36 Where things are not always as conducive 00:27:33.37\00:27:35.13 to making changes. Right. They will often encounter 00:27:35.14\00:27:41.00 let's say added stress from their work programs, 00:27:41.01\00:27:46.92 schedules are not as easy for them to follow 00:27:46.93\00:27:49.91 like with exercise routine and so fourth 00:27:49.92\00:27:52.50 and so just making sure that they're sticking 00:27:52.86\00:27:55.88 to the program when they go home, 00:27:55.89\00:27:58.16 this is what will make the difference. 00:27:58.17\00:27:59.78 This is Lee Wellard, Wildwood Lifestyle Center. 00:28:00.78\00:28:03.26 Thank you for joining us today, 00:28:03.27\00:28:04.55 I hope it's been a blessing to you, 00:28:04.56\00:28:05.91 please join us next time on Wonderfully Made. 00:28:05.92\00:28:08.55
