Viewers are encouraged to 00:00:10.46\00:00:12.78 draw their own conclusions 00:00:12.81\00:00:14.05 about the information presented. 00:00:14.08\00:00:15.77 Hello and welcome to Wonderfully Made. 00:00:35.66\00:00:37.30 I'm your host Claudio Japas. 00:00:37.33\00:00:38.81 I'm happy to be with you. I'm a Doctoral Student at 00:00:38.84\00:00:41.40 Loma Linda University in the Preventive Care Program. 00:00:41.43\00:00:43.81 Today, we have an interesting topic that you 00:00:44.28\00:00:46.36 may be interested in. With me joining me is 00:00:46.39\00:00:49.22 Dr. Dos Santos. He is also from Loma Linda 00:00:49.25\00:00:51.72 University in the Preventive Care Program. 00:00:51.75\00:00:53.80 Welcome Dr. Dos Santos. Thank you very much to 00:00:53.83\00:00:56.61 be here. It is my pleasure to share about 00:00:56.64\00:00:59.80 health with our audience. And you believe that 00:00:59.83\00:01:02.99 health is something that's very important to you and 00:01:03.36\00:01:05.45 for me also and I hope that everybody watching 00:01:05.48\00:01:07.93 that health is something that's on your to do this or 00:01:07.96\00:01:10.92 something you look forward to. 00:01:10.95\00:01:12.19 And today on our program, we want to 00:01:12.62\00:01:15.04 speak on how is health been used to reach others, 00:01:15.07\00:01:18.38 how is health a tool for to not only teach health, but 00:01:18.41\00:01:23.08 to teach about Jesus Christ. And we often call this 00:01:23.11\00:01:26.43 Health Evangelism. What is Health Evangelism to you? 00:01:26.46\00:01:29.36 Well you, you have first to go to the word evangelism. 00:01:30.47\00:01:34.21 So, evangelism in Christian term means to 00:01:34.55\00:01:38.45 bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to people and then 00:01:38.48\00:01:42.20 to share Jesus' message with other people and 00:01:42.23\00:01:46.97 Jesus' gospel of salvation. In terms of Health 00:01:47.00\00:01:52.70 Evangelism my definition is that evangelism does 00:01:52.73\00:01:57.52 not mean only for the gospel, but it means 00:01:57.55\00:02:00.23 promote something, preach something, and 00:02:00.26\00:02:03.39 then you preach health, so Health Evangelism is to 00:02:03.42\00:02:07.23 promote health the community to the 00:02:07.26\00:02:09.38 church to who ever. It doesn't mean baptizing 00:02:09.41\00:02:12.51 them and just in using that as evangelism, 00:02:12.54\00:02:15.66 but more to that? Is more that, I believe we 00:02:15.69\00:02:18.65 have used that term evangelism, Health 00:02:18.68\00:02:20.88 Evangelism, as the right arm to bring more souls 00:02:20.91\00:02:25.35 through Christ, but I would say, I have a friend 00:02:25.38\00:02:28.37 that is very interested and do research on exercise 00:02:28.40\00:02:33.79 and he consider himself exercise evangelist. 00:02:33.82\00:02:37.20 And I believe the term is that he is for multi 00:02:38.85\00:02:41.04 exercise. So, our function is to use the word Health 00:02:41.07\00:02:44.24 Evangelism to promote health activities. 00:02:44.27\00:02:47.38 Okay very good, so you just point to teach a good 00:02:47.81\00:02:50.30 news of what health can do to you. For your body 00:02:50.33\00:02:53.02 how to keep it healthy and optimal, how is this 00:02:53.05\00:02:55.38 different from conventional or traditional evangelism 00:02:55.41\00:02:59.50 any differences? Well, I have my own idea 00:02:59.53\00:03:05.47 about that, I believe when Jesus was here, he 00:03:05.50\00:03:08.82 promote healing and teaching and preaching. 00:03:08.85\00:03:12.82 So, he was at three component of his mission. 00:03:13.07\00:03:17.53 And if we go over and decide to follow his steps, 00:03:18.09\00:03:23.50 we should have the gospel, we should have 00:03:23.88\00:03:27.54 education and teaching and we should have the 00:03:27.57\00:03:31.07 Health Evangelism. The health activities together 00:03:31.10\00:03:34.45 and that's what I point, even though health, 00:03:34.82\00:03:37.61 Health Evangelism has been used for by our 00:03:37.64\00:03:40.66 church or by some churches to help to bring 00:03:40.69\00:03:44.61 source to the church. But, the term means imitating 00:03:44.64\00:03:49.23 the mission of Jesus Christ that was healing 00:03:49.96\00:03:53.22 and sometimes he was more healing or healing 00:03:53.76\00:03:56.74 more then preaching. So, it's more of part thing 00:03:56.77\00:04:00.07 going together healing and preaching together 00:04:00.10\00:04:03.47 not one leading the other or following the other, 00:04:03.50\00:04:05.49 that's how you see it correct. 00:04:05.52\00:04:07.14 Same, yes. Okay, you said that it is 00:04:07.17\00:04:10.59 for the members of the community. 00:04:10.62\00:04:12.31 What do you mean of is that just next door or 00:04:13.15\00:04:16.66 bigger than that or? I believe Health Evangelism 00:04:16.69\00:04:20.57 as we know it, it starts with, with members in the 00:04:20.60\00:04:25.10 church and then it spreads outside of the church. 00:04:25.13\00:04:28.68 So, if you promote health activities to a church they 00:04:29.03\00:04:33.65 can easily invite some friends and relatives and 00:04:33.68\00:04:37.18 some neighbors that they can share 00:04:37.21\00:04:39.98 the message with them. And this in the Adventist 00:04:40.01\00:04:43.72 church is very common, but not just the Adventist 00:04:43.75\00:04:46.82 church I remember there was, I did a study with 00:04:46.85\00:04:49.57 the Baptist church in United States that many 00:04:50.26\00:04:54.96 times health activities were run in the churches 00:04:54.99\00:04:59.76 because somehow the communities could not 00:05:00.07\00:05:03.62 get health care and then the church became the 00:05:03.65\00:05:06.62 health provider and that's very interesting for 00:05:06.65\00:05:09.26 American history that Health Evangelism is a 00:05:09.29\00:05:13.74 component of many churches. And so they would come 00:05:13.77\00:05:16.59 to the churches to be taught how to be healthy 00:05:16.62\00:05:19.57 or how to cook healthy or how to keep their bodies 00:05:19.60\00:05:22.34 or may be even have a small clinic there on 00:05:22.73\00:05:24.55 certain days of the week, where they 00:05:24.58\00:05:25.92 could come to right. Especially in the African- 00:05:25.95\00:05:28.12 American communities, I mean the church was very 00:05:28.15\00:05:30.99 important to prevent hypertension, high 00:05:31.02\00:05:33.30 cholesterol and some they have seminars, they have 00:05:33.33\00:05:37.44 small clinics and they have health fares that 00:05:37.47\00:05:41.53 promote this preventive activities and even 00:05:41.56\00:05:44.46 curative activities to promote health in the 00:05:45.62\00:05:49.13 community that was not being serve them that 00:05:49.16\00:05:51.75 they didn't have enough power or money to pay 00:05:51.78\00:05:56.67 for a physician and to go to a higher level. 00:05:56.70\00:05:59.19 Right, right, sometimes we don't think that it's 00:05:59.22\00:06:02.48 happening so much or we don't see it often perhaps, 00:06:02.51\00:06:04.76 but many churches are still doing this correct? 00:06:04.79\00:06:06.91 Yes, many churches do that, of course when you 00:06:07.33\00:06:12.81 learn that this or when you agree with me if you 00:06:13.82\00:06:17.56 agree with me, that this is something that church 00:06:17.59\00:06:21.12 can do you see the power that we have even to help 00:06:21.15\00:06:25.57 the health care, if we have deliver message, 00:06:25.60\00:06:28.86 preventive messages through the church. 00:06:28.89\00:06:30.80 I once attended a meeting in a conference the person 00:06:31.29\00:06:35.74 is was talking about how to prevent AIDS in the world. 00:06:35.77\00:06:40.86 And she was specifically talking about churches, 00:06:40.89\00:06:44.04 not anything else. She was not concerned about 00:06:44.07\00:06:46.58 the governments and the other agencies and school 00:06:47.10\00:06:50.76 and she said the church can do it. And when she 00:06:50.79\00:06:54.39 talk about the churches, it's not just one church, 00:06:54.42\00:06:56.42 she said that we have churches Protestant, 00:06:56.45\00:06:59.19 Catholics and several different church 00:06:59.22\00:07:01.46 Adventists and then if they deliver the right 00:07:01.49\00:07:04.81 message to prevent AIDS we can, we could have a 00:07:04.84\00:07:08.46 big working in Africa by instance and then we will 00:07:08.49\00:07:13.77 have a better control of the epidemic there. 00:07:13.80\00:07:16.36 Right, right, so it's very powerful, lot of change 00:07:16.39\00:07:19.51 can happen through the churches and using the 00:07:19.54\00:07:22.49 health message through this entity or 00:07:22.52\00:07:25.53 these organizations. Now you had some 00:07:25.56\00:07:29.71 personal changes also in your personal life that 00:07:29.74\00:07:32.40 you experienced when you were growing up, 00:07:32.43\00:07:35.37 is that not true? Yes, I'm from Brazil, 00:07:36.52\00:07:39.68 so in Brazil I'm from the south and the south is like 00:07:40.35\00:07:44.96 Southern United States, the South American 00:07:45.33\00:07:48.02 cowboys, so we use to eat meat three times a day. 00:07:48.47\00:07:51.84 But, when I was maybe 15, 16 years old I started 00:07:52.44\00:07:56.70 reading books that the Adventist church has on 00:07:56.73\00:08:00.46 health and this woke we up to a better lifestyle and 00:08:00.49\00:08:06.21 then I change and then I started being more 00:08:06.24\00:08:08.75 vegetarian and more concerned about that and 00:08:08.78\00:08:12.56 so that was a big change I believe for. It was not 00:08:12.59\00:08:16.79 easy, but was a big change for my life. 00:08:16.82\00:08:20.18 So, it did work in your personal life to become 00:08:20.21\00:08:24.10 acquainted with some better practices for health 00:08:24.13\00:08:26.88 that could improve your lifestyle or improve the 00:08:26.91\00:08:29.87 benefits that are accompanied by that. 00:08:29.90\00:08:31.91 And also this will led me to enter in the health field. 00:08:32.46\00:08:37.06 I became health leader in the church and 00:08:37.42\00:08:40.39 then as long as I remember I was always a health 00:08:40.42\00:08:43.54 leader in the place that I move, even in America 00:08:43.57\00:08:47.31 I always have somehow I got to work with Health 00:08:47.34\00:08:52.41 Evangelism in the church. So, you became Health 00:08:52.44\00:08:55.80 Evangelist. Exactly, exactly, well I went 00:08:55.83\00:08:58.23 to the American school because of that. I mean 00:08:58.26\00:09:00.41 this was an influence then I went to Loma Linda and 00:09:00.44\00:09:02.96 then I'm now teaching desirous, but was just 00:09:02.99\00:09:07.72 because when I was in church I was somehow 00:09:07.75\00:09:12.50 influenced by health messages in the church. 00:09:12.85\00:09:15.86 Yeah and you were just in the church or where there 00:09:15.89\00:09:19.85 other places that gave you opportunities to influence. 00:09:19.88\00:09:23.36 Well, I worked in several different places, but 00:09:23.39\00:09:28.73 I remember I was worked in Hong Kong and then 00:09:29.34\00:09:32.69 I was working for the Hong Kong Adventist 00:09:32.72\00:09:34.80 Hospital, but one day we went to visit the Director 00:09:34.83\00:09:38.00 of Public Health in the city. The Hong Kong has 00:09:38.03\00:09:41.00 about 7 million people, so I visit the lady and she is 00:09:41.03\00:09:44.94 a doctor and she said okay you believe in 00:09:44.97\00:09:47.44 public health. What can you do in public health in 00:09:47.47\00:09:50.33 Hong Kong, what public health can do? What you 00:09:50.36\00:09:53.57 can do about that? Then I thought for a moment 00:09:53.60\00:09:56.68 and then I said well we have 13 churches in 00:09:56.71\00:09:59.94 Hong Kong, so if we promote health in those 00:09:59.97\00:10:02.98 churches and turn these churches to health centers. 00:10:03.01\00:10:05.91 We will have a big influence in this 00:10:06.35\00:10:09.04 communities and maybe the model that we 00:10:09.07\00:10:12.63 develop can be spread to other churches. 00:10:12.66\00:10:15.09 I was talking about Adventist church, but if 00:10:15.12\00:10:17.42 the Baptist church and Lutheran church will get 00:10:17.45\00:10:19.81 the idea, they could develop the same thing. 00:10:19.84\00:10:22.10 Same model to spread, yeah, that same concept 00:10:22.81\00:10:25.15 of health to other places. And of course, and 00:10:25.18\00:10:27.21 of course we went to other churches, I did 00:10:27.24\00:10:30.26 lecturing, did some lectures in other church 00:10:30.29\00:10:33.22 non-Adventist, we went to the schools, we went to 00:10:33.25\00:10:35.70 corporations to promote health I mean now is a 00:10:35.73\00:10:39.05 big deal, worksite wellness is a big, is a big 00:10:39.08\00:10:42.96 important program that we consider in public 00:10:42.99\00:10:46.90 health one of the best because you have a 00:10:46.93\00:10:48.76 capped divulgence, right, and then the employer is 00:10:48.79\00:10:53.22 willing to do that because some how they spend less 00:10:53.25\00:10:58.70 costs on health insurance. And then the employees 00:10:58.73\00:11:03.39 are happy because they improve their health and 00:11:03.42\00:11:06.33 then you improve the relationship between 00:11:06.36\00:11:08.37 employee and employer and you bring health to a 00:11:08.40\00:11:11.72 very good environment so. That's right, in fact 00:11:11.75\00:11:14.94 I remember correctly most of the Fortune 500 00:11:15.60\00:11:17.88 companies almost all of them have corporate 00:11:17.91\00:11:20.76 wellness or worksite wellness programs to help 00:11:20.79\00:11:23.12 just with their concepts. So, well Health Evangelism 00:11:23.15\00:11:25.99 may not be the term that they use right for that, 00:11:26.02\00:11:28.96 there would be something that has very same 00:11:28.99\00:11:31.55 method teaching and sharing the health that can 00:11:31.58\00:11:37.55 be obtained by anyone who wants to learn and 00:11:37.58\00:11:40.14 apply to their life. Yeah, I see that also in 00:11:40.71\00:11:45.74 terms of the effects of having a health lifestyle 00:11:45.77\00:11:50.83 on your spiritual performance, on your 00:11:51.41\00:11:54.52 physical and mental performance. 00:11:54.55\00:11:56.09 And so, I have a story to tell you and then I want to 00:11:56.59\00:12:00.36 show a picture of the first native pastor in Brazil 00:12:00.39\00:12:04.41 Jose Amador dos Reis, he was a cousin of my 00:12:04.87\00:12:09.52 grandfather and then I know very well the story. 00:12:10.13\00:12:13.38 He was a very successful pastor the first pastor, 00:12:13.69\00:12:16.59 who was baptized in the Adventist church and he 00:12:16.62\00:12:19.25 unfortunately he die at 43 years old. 00:12:20.55\00:12:23.54 And then I bring the issue why did he die so young. 00:12:24.84\00:12:30.54 I believe mostly is because he didn't know 00:12:31.02\00:12:34.02 about the health message. As a nation in the 00:12:34.05\00:12:36.91 beginning so we were in South of Brazil, we used 00:12:36.94\00:12:40.67 to eat a lot of meat and lot of sugar and we didn't 00:12:40.70\00:12:45.80 know about sleep and stress control and other 00:12:45.83\00:12:51.46 water intake and things like that and fruits and 00:12:51.49\00:12:54.48 vegetables, so we didn't even get the whole health 00:12:54.51\00:12:59.14 message. So, we were not Health Evangelized. 00:12:59.17\00:13:02.42 Right, right, so you just obtained parts of that, 00:13:02.45\00:13:04.69 there is some pieces of it. Exactly and then these 00:13:05.57\00:13:08.83 would if we, if we, I believe if he knew about 00:13:08.86\00:13:12.19 that and he practiced that he could have longer time 00:13:12.22\00:13:15.93 serving the church or preaching that's my point. 00:13:15.96\00:13:19.59 Right. You will increase both the performance and 00:13:19.62\00:13:22.89 your life is gonna be longer with a healthy lifestyle. 00:13:22.92\00:13:26.92 For yourself and also for anyone who is watching 00:13:27.46\00:13:30.54 or wanting to participate or take those effects that 00:13:30.57\00:13:33.42 could extend your life and your quality of life. 00:13:33.45\00:13:35.99 So, those are excellent things that are priceless, 00:13:36.02\00:13:38.22 I mean big companies are taking advantage of that 00:13:38.51\00:13:40.85 and making use of it, everybody should as a 00:13:40.88\00:13:44.26 matter of fact. Now I'm excited, I like health, how 00:13:44.29\00:13:48.18 could I make it as I'm learning more, how could 00:13:48.21\00:13:52.64 I take this to an practical level to my community, 00:13:52.67\00:13:56.38 to my church? Well I, one thing that 00:13:56.41\00:14:00.27 I believe is to develop health support groups and 00:14:00.30\00:14:05.62 when I was in Hong Kong we would develop 00:14:06.44\00:14:09.10 this in the community. So, we chose the church 00:14:09.72\00:14:15.56 that was very central and then we apply there 00:14:15.59\00:14:19.10 support groups. We develop support groups 00:14:20.11\00:14:22.30 for cholesterol, for high cholesterol, for high 00:14:22.33\00:14:25.44 blood pressure, for diabetes, for smoking 00:14:25.47\00:14:28.68 cessation and then this was the way to attract 00:14:28.71\00:14:33.60 people that in the community and help 00:14:33.63\00:14:36.33 people in the church. Some members of the 00:14:36.36\00:14:38.89 church were having this, this, this problem and 00:14:38.92\00:14:42.21 then when we bring them together, so was a share 00:14:42.24\00:14:46.18 of ideas and share of knowledge and it was a 00:14:46.21\00:14:50.55 very good way. I have one slide that show my 00:14:50.96\00:14:55.06 cholesterol support group if we can show now. 00:14:55.09\00:14:59.29 I remember when I was on that group I have a 00:15:00.61\00:15:06.19 lady there that had a cholesterol 00:15:06.22\00:15:09.09 level of 300 mg/dL. And then she followed 00:15:09.12\00:15:13.74 the guidelines and her cholesterol after three 00:15:13.77\00:15:17.98 months dropped to 150 and that was 00:15:18.01\00:15:21.33 I even didn't even ask. Good improvement. 00:15:21.87\00:15:23.58 Yeah, she volunteer to tell us about that 00:15:23.93\00:15:27.38 and that was excellent. Now you are a doctor and 00:15:27.41\00:15:32.28 maybe somebody has a equal degree, you are in 00:15:32.31\00:15:34.74 the health field or DRPH preventive care person, 00:15:34.77\00:15:38.86 but can any lay person do this or any community 00:15:39.43\00:15:42.96 member or church member do a program like this? 00:15:42.99\00:15:46.13 Of course the everybody can do depends on the 00:15:47.79\00:15:50.57 level that you have, so when we work there the 00:15:50.60\00:15:56.09 cholesterol group was based on me. And I try 00:15:56.12\00:15:59.33 to put someone else their and a nurse and I believe 00:15:59.36\00:16:03.65 if you having a church a nurse, a doctor, a nurse 00:16:03.68\00:16:06.81 practitioner, a physical therapy, a dentist. 00:16:06.84\00:16:09.14 So, those could be the health leaders, but if you 00:16:09.62\00:16:14.14 don't have the knowledge to develop support group 00:16:14.17\00:16:17.54 you can do as the alcoholic anonymous do things. 00:16:17.57\00:16:22.63 So, what they do is that they have one alcoholic 00:16:22.66\00:16:26.35 that recovered and then they set up a group of 00:16:26.38\00:16:30.32 ex-alcoholics and then they get together. 00:16:30.35\00:16:33.37 And then they support each other. 00:16:33.40\00:16:35.02 Once in a while they bring one specialist to do 00:16:35.40\00:16:38.70 a lecture, to do a support, to do some counseling. 00:16:38.73\00:16:42.57 So, the same thing we can apply for the support group. 00:16:42.60\00:16:45.90 You can bring them, you can if there is no health 00:16:46.27\00:16:50.30 director in the church, so the person can go to the 00:16:50.33\00:16:53.46 community invite people to With common entrance. 00:16:53.49\00:16:56.78 Exactly. With common situations they wanna 00:16:56.81\00:16:58.82 decrease or work on and have that one each other 00:16:59.37\00:17:03.02 support each other with what they are learning or 00:17:03.05\00:17:05.34 each one present apart. But, what I mean is that 00:17:05.37\00:17:07.85 they can find in the community a nurse that 00:17:07.88\00:17:10.20 could give the guidelines to start the thing. 00:17:10.23\00:17:12.57 Okay, and then later on they get this group 00:17:12.60\00:17:16.52 together and then they continue, but they always 00:17:16.55\00:17:19.63 looking for resources outside of the church and 00:17:19.66\00:17:22.49 the activities don't need to be just health related. 00:17:22.52\00:17:25.84 They can develop other activities relaxing things 00:17:26.14\00:17:29.08 and even the spiritual activities that will help 00:17:29.11\00:17:32.05 the group to maintain echo system. 00:17:32.08\00:17:35.29 And continues and in other objects or subjects 00:17:36.22\00:17:40.03 that would be of interest to them. Now, are those 00:17:40.06\00:17:44.11 are the main results of Health Evangelism or 00:17:44.14\00:17:46.74 what are the some of the results that could be 00:17:47.55\00:17:49.07 obtained from that, is just learning and everybody 00:17:49.10\00:17:51.72 leaves and goes back and would you train other 00:17:51.75\00:17:54.19 leader, so that they can lead in more groups or 00:17:54.22\00:17:56.66 other, other things. We are not talking about baptism. 00:17:56.69\00:17:59.70 Unnecessarily. Yeah, I think, I think 00:18:01.52\00:18:05.92 there are several levels for improvement that we 00:18:05.95\00:18:09.28 have one is that our nation already you 00:18:09.31\00:18:13.60 increase the health of the person in the church, then 00:18:13.63\00:18:19.02 this person might have more energy, more 00:18:19.63\00:18:23.69 opinions, and more a better performance to do 00:18:24.31\00:18:29.54 evangelism and to help other people. 00:18:29.57\00:18:31.70 And to have other people that have other disease. 00:18:32.05\00:18:34.67 So, then other problem, health problems and then 00:18:34.70\00:18:37.57 this will reach the community as the 00:18:37.60\00:18:42.46 surrounding community. Many times, I ask about 00:18:42.49\00:18:46.14 baptisms because sometimes we like to use, 00:18:46.87\00:18:51.95 I mean is an Adventist tradition to use Health 00:18:51.98\00:18:56.10 Evangelism together with a gospel to bring people 00:18:56.13\00:18:59.00 to the church. And I believe we forget that 00:18:59.03\00:19:03.11 many people leave the church by the back door 00:19:03.14\00:19:05.76 and why they leave because they are 00:19:06.57\00:19:08.65 inactively they don't have many friends in the 00:19:08.68\00:19:10.87 church and that's why I believe Health 00:19:10.90\00:19:13.12 Evangelism is important because we will keep the 00:19:13.15\00:19:15.49 community active in promoting these groups 00:19:15.52\00:19:19.19 and promoted these activities we will make 00:19:19.22\00:19:21.50 this church to be an active church. 00:19:21.53\00:19:24.36 I develop one health fare in Chino for the 00:19:24.69\00:19:28.30 Portuguese speaking church in California. 00:19:28.33\00:19:32.97 And then we brought all the church together and 00:19:33.53\00:19:37.74 the youth to promote I mean several areas of health. 00:19:37.77\00:19:42.28 And we have blood tests and you have. 00:19:42.53\00:19:44.85 Invite. Invite the community. 00:19:45.54\00:19:47.49 Church members or community members. 00:19:47.52\00:19:48.49 Yeah, the church members were in the 00:19:48.50\00:19:49.98 booths and then inviting everyone else to 00:19:50.01\00:19:52.68 To work together. To work together and 00:19:52.71\00:19:54.17 to participate in the health fare. 00:19:54.20\00:19:55.85 Yeah that can be very bonding, very 00:19:56.31\00:19:57.91 contributing to the community and of course 00:19:58.55\00:20:01.24 all things can start from their and you know you 00:20:01.40\00:20:03.46 can have people go to if they find the risk or 00:20:03.49\00:20:06.86 something you could go to your personal medical 00:20:06.89\00:20:09.66 doctor or to different clinics or different places, 00:20:09.69\00:20:13.51 where you could treat those things, so it's a 00:20:13.54\00:20:15.85 good preventive measure to for diseases and so forth. 00:20:15.88\00:20:19.01 One thing that I forgot to mention is that just an 00:20:19.67\00:20:24.69 illustration of the cholesterol group. 00:20:24.72\00:20:28.44 When I mentioned about this lady I brought here 00:20:29.68\00:20:32.02 what she did? Okay. And then what I promote 00:20:32.05\00:20:35.47 so we have a research by Dr. Jenkins from Canada 00:20:35.50\00:20:40.32 that he use this type of things to lower 00:20:40.67\00:20:43.58 cholesterol is a combination of grains and almonds 00:20:43.61\00:20:47.30 and one of type of fat that is a natural fat, so we 00:20:47.33\00:20:53.92 have, I adopted Dr. Jenkins diet and so I will tell you 00:20:53.95\00:21:01.12 what I change from that, but is one cup of beans in 00:21:01.15\00:21:05.13 this case I put lentils here so one cup of lentils, 00:21:05.16\00:21:10.18 one cup of oatmeal and then this is traditional we 00:21:10.21\00:21:15.57 know that oatmeal helped to drop cholesterol. 00:21:15.60\00:21:19.04 As we know also that beans also help to drop 00:21:19.07\00:21:23.29 cholesterol then when handful of almonds, so if 00:21:23.32\00:21:28.52 you can put the almonds like that you have a little 00:21:28.55\00:21:29.52 bit of more of handful, but this is what they have 00:21:31.87\00:21:37.13 to eat everyday. Then we have here a substance 00:21:37.16\00:21:41.42 called psyllium and I told the lady today about 00:21:41.45\00:21:46.59 psyllium and nobody knows what the psyllium, 00:21:46.62\00:21:48.95 but is more known by Metamucil and if you use 00:21:48.98\00:21:56.81 Metamucil should be without flavor and then 00:21:56.84\00:21:59.83 this one is a fiber and you have to be careful to not 00:21:59.86\00:22:03.73 eat too much of that because then you may get 00:22:03.76\00:22:06.04 diarrhea and gas. So, should be one or two 00:22:06.07\00:22:09.58 tablespoon and then you have to measure the effect 00:22:11.11\00:22:15.08 on yourself. You mentioned something about not 00:22:15.11\00:22:18.21 having flavors or sugars, is there a particular 00:22:18.24\00:22:21.44 reason for that. Oh, it's just because sugar 00:22:21.47\00:22:24.82 will increase the calorie content and so we don't in 00:22:24.85\00:22:28.40 sugar we don't wanna promote sugar, okay, 00:22:28.43\00:22:32.55 in health environment. So, we are not sugar 00:22:34.86\00:22:39.11 favorite person. Perfect. And then the other thing 00:22:39.14\00:22:43.11 is avocado. So, the as I mentioned Dr. Jenkins 00:22:43.14\00:22:50.06 from Canada he advised people to use a kind of 00:22:50.09\00:22:56.10 margarine that is reach in beta-sitosterol, 00:22:56.13\00:23:00.41 beta-sitosterol, okay, and is a substance that drop 00:23:00.44\00:23:04.83 cholesterol is a type of fat that drop cholesterol. 00:23:04.86\00:23:07.79 Okay. Then I was researching and then 00:23:07.82\00:23:10.14 I found that avocado has it. 00:23:10.17\00:23:12.33 So, I don't like margarine, I don't like, and some will 00:23:12.36\00:23:15.28 go to natural way, I notify, yeah, 00:23:15.31\00:23:16.90 and so this is what the lady was using that 00:23:16.93\00:23:21.14 everyday, I don't know how much more she 00:23:21.17\00:23:23.46 could eat everyday, but she did that and that's 00:23:23.49\00:23:26.75 why her cholesterol dropped for 50% lower 00:23:26.78\00:23:31.04 and then I advised I mean there are some research 00:23:31.57\00:23:34.04 with avocado that if you eat one avocado per day 00:23:34.07\00:23:37.96 you can drop cholesterol and increase the HDL. 00:23:37.99\00:23:42.01 The HDL is the good cholesterol that protects 00:23:42.04\00:23:45.54 against heart disease and then the new thing is that 00:23:45.57\00:23:49.33 is not a low fat diet that is good. But, light fat diet 00:23:49.36\00:23:54.27 not a high fat, light fat diet and diet that have 00:23:54.30\00:23:59.37 some good fats that are found in both in avocado 00:23:59.40\00:24:03.55 and almonds. And with avocado you 00:24:03.58\00:24:07.22 are this is a medium or small avocado. 00:24:07.25\00:24:09.92 Because there are some avocados are pretty big, 00:24:09.95\00:24:11.84 so when you need one avocado per 00:24:11.87\00:24:13.34 day medium or small? Yeah, I would say one 00:24:13.37\00:24:16.49 Haas avocado. Oh! One-half. That is a Californian, 00:24:16.52\00:24:19.06 no Haas is HAAS is the, okay, brand name is a 00:24:19.09\00:24:23.94 type of avocado. So, should be a California 00:24:23.97\00:24:27.53 avocado not the Filipino or Florida 00:24:27.56\00:24:30.32 avocado, which is too big. Those are too big and 00:24:30.35\00:24:33.76 maybe the part of them you have them. 00:24:33.79\00:24:35.99 Yeah, take a part similar to this size. 00:24:36.02\00:24:36.99 Okay, perfect, perfect. So, this was the good way 00:24:37.02\00:24:39.90 that somebody was able to learn though Health 00:24:39.93\00:24:42.29 Evangelism, how to take care of their cholesterol 00:24:42.32\00:24:44.46 levels and if it was done by a church, it's a good 00:24:44.49\00:24:47.84 way to make the friends and the connection and 00:24:47.87\00:24:50.16 that's why I see the similar method of what 00:24:50.19\00:24:52.41 you mention Jesus was doing, you know, he 00:24:52.44\00:24:54.73 would walk around or go wherever the God send 00:24:54.76\00:24:57.47 him to and he was preaching the good news 00:24:57.50\00:25:00.19 and healing those that needed the healing and 00:25:00.22\00:25:02.79 the church has the same commission, the same job 00:25:02.82\00:25:05.76 in all days to do the same and this is probably the 00:25:05.79\00:25:09.05 best way to do it. And we think about 00:25:09.08\00:25:11.38 health messages in terms of doing a health fare or 00:25:11.41\00:25:14.67 big health fare, health lectures, but it can be, 00:25:14.70\00:25:19.33 can be simple like that and it can be a food 00:25:19.36\00:25:21.95 demonstration, a cooking demonstration. 00:25:21.98\00:25:23.75 I remember one activity that I like the most and 00:25:24.38\00:25:27.53 I was the person doing is promote 00:25:27.56\00:25:30.50 ice cream in the church. You say ice cream you 00:25:30.53\00:25:34.44 just mentioned about sugar, how can you do that. 00:25:34.47\00:25:37.33 The thing is that we just froze the fruits and then 00:25:37.76\00:25:41.97 we have a blender a special type of blender 00:25:42.00\00:25:44.49 that we put frozen fruits there and we produce the 00:25:44.52\00:25:47.85 fresh fruits, fresh fruit ice cream that was kind of 00:25:47.88\00:25:52.42 delicious and we can do some different flavors 00:25:52.45\00:25:55.88 with no single gram of fat. No single gram of sugar. 00:25:55.91\00:26:00.60 And so all natural. All natural. 00:26:00.63\00:26:02.25 All healthy, yeah, so you could eat as 00:26:02.28\00:26:04.22 much as you wanted. We have to have moderation 00:26:04.25\00:26:07.50 in all things so. Exactly so, yeah, I'm just 00:26:07.53\00:26:11.25 playing a joke there, obviously food is to be 00:26:11.28\00:26:14.45 enjoyed, but in moderation even the good foods that 00:26:14.48\00:26:17.26 we have been talking about. Now Dr. Dos Santos 00:26:17.29\00:26:19.84 we have been talking about Health Evangelism. 00:26:19.87\00:26:21.45 Do you have any concluding thoughts of 00:26:21.88\00:26:23.48 what Health Evangelism is? I think Health Evangelism 00:26:23.92\00:26:27.69 is health promotion in the church using the church 00:26:27.72\00:26:31.34 as a tool and I believe the church is that don't have 00:26:31.37\00:26:34.59 that I mean are just missing a part of the 00:26:34.62\00:26:37.60 evangelism that total evangelism that is 00:26:37.63\00:26:40.08 bringing health that is a part of the abundant life 00:26:40.44\00:26:43.85 that Jesus is providing to us. And I believe one 00:26:43.88\00:26:49.49 important part is that we should imitate somehow 00:26:49.52\00:26:53.11 the ministry of Jesus that included a health component. 00:26:53.14\00:26:57.85 Right and that reminds me of the verse in Luke 00:26:58.26\00:27:01.19 9:11, which says that Jesus welcome them and 00:27:01.22\00:27:04.68 then spoke to them about the kingdom of heaven, 00:27:04.71\00:27:06.83 the kingdom of his father, the gospel and then 00:27:06.86\00:27:09.70 healed those that needed healing. 00:27:09.73\00:27:11.18 So, the same thing should be applied to what we do, 00:27:11.89\00:27:14.81 where we will have health together with the 00:27:15.18\00:27:18.10 message, the message of Jesus Christ dying for us 00:27:18.13\00:27:20.66 and given us hope and have both of them work 00:27:20.69\00:27:22.95 together just like Jesus. Jesus gave us a perfect 00:27:22.98\00:27:25.13 example. And we wanna do that with Health 00:27:25.16\00:27:27.36 Evangelism to bring people to Christ and not 00:27:27.39\00:27:30.42 only bring them, but to keep them in Christ and 00:27:30.45\00:27:33.24 growing in Christ and that has a combination with 00:27:33.27\00:27:36.20 health very much like we saw with Jesus. 00:27:36.23\00:27:38.46 So, we hope that you have enjoyed watching 00:27:39.00\00:27:41.29 about Health Evangelism and that you partake in 00:27:41.32\00:27:44.07 the Health Evangelism that you may see in your 00:27:44.10\00:27:45.90 church or your community and if there is nothing 00:27:45.93\00:27:47.63 going on there that you maybe able to start 00:27:47.66\00:27:50.29 something or ask for more information of how 00:27:50.32\00:27:52.76 you can not only participate, but lead in 00:27:52.79\00:27:55.75 something never think that you don't have the 00:27:55.78\00:27:57.85 knowledge there is plenty of material to learn, to be 00:27:57.88\00:28:00.45 trained in. So, let us once again remember what 00:28:00.48\00:28:04.08 Jesus did and that he was our perfect example in 00:28:04.11\00:28:07.29 Health Evangelism. Thank you for joining us today. 00:28:07.32\00:28:10.12
