I'm glad you have 00:00:35.27\00:00:38.34 joined us. I'm your host Claudio Japas 00:00:38.37\00:00:40.61 a doctoral student at Loma Linda University 00:00:40.64\00:00:42.85 in the Preventive Care Program. 00:00:42.88\00:00:44.51 Today, we have a wonderful subject that 00:00:44.54\00:00:47.00 may sound a little stressing, but it is stress 00:00:47.03\00:00:50.38 that we're going to be talking about. 00:00:50.41\00:00:52.17 Joining me is Dr. Dos Santos from Loma Linda University. 00:00:52.20\00:00:55.24 He is a professor in the Preventive Care Program. 00:00:55.27\00:00:57.82 I'm glad you've joined us. I'm sure the, 00:00:57.85\00:01:00.77 your knowledge, and stress, and what you teach, 00:01:00.80\00:01:04.98 and what you've dealt with in different clinics 00:01:05.01\00:01:07.46 would be very helpful to us. 00:01:07.49\00:01:08.87 Well, thank you for having me here 00:01:09.70\00:01:12.85 and this topic is very interesting and 00:01:12.88\00:01:17.11 in the beginning we ourselves, 00:01:17.14\00:01:19.80 I guess a little, got a 00:01:19.83\00:01:21.71 little stressed out, but I believe 00:01:21.74\00:01:24.37 at the end of the presentation 00:01:24.40\00:01:25.82 we will be very relaxed and that's 00:01:25.85\00:01:28.35 what we are trying to do, most of people have 00:01:28.38\00:01:30.46 stress and we are going to try to figure out 00:01:30.49\00:01:33.85 what to do to cope with it. 00:01:33.88\00:01:36.58 That's good, that's good because stress is 00:01:36.61\00:01:38.20 just all around us, it's, I don't think 00:01:38.23\00:01:40.85 anybody is immune to it, it's something we 00:01:40.88\00:01:43.57 experience from day to day and I'm sure many 00:01:43.60\00:01:47.17 of you watching can relate to stress in different 00:01:47.20\00:01:50.03 levels and for different situation and we want to 00:01:50.06\00:01:52.66 make sure we understand it better and learn more 00:01:52.69\00:01:55.08 about it today. In fact stress is a component of, 00:01:55.11\00:01:58.37 has been known to bring ulcers and hypertension 00:01:58.40\00:02:02.79 and migraines and multiple of other symptoms 00:02:02.82\00:02:07.48 and diseases, is that true, I mean that's part 00:02:07.51\00:02:10.47 of being stressful or some of the side effects. 00:02:10.50\00:02:12.48 Yes, when you are under stress. 00:02:12.51\00:02:15.60 When a person is under stress what happen 00:02:15.63\00:02:18.96 is that some hormones are being released in circulation. 00:02:18.99\00:02:22.46 One of the them among is adrenaline and adrenaline 00:02:22.49\00:02:25.55 has the potential or has the function to increase 00:02:25.58\00:02:28.63 blood pressure to increase blood sugar 00:02:28.66\00:02:31.86 and lipids in the circulation, to prepare a 00:02:31.89\00:02:35.10 person is a reaction to prepare a person to fight 00:02:35.13\00:02:38.48 or to run or to climb something or to runaway. 00:02:38.51\00:02:42.33 So, it is something that God has built 00:02:42.36\00:02:44.86 into us to deal with certain situations. 00:02:44.89\00:02:46.88 Here are the drastic stories of somebody 00:02:46.91\00:02:50.10 being caught under the car or similar situations, 00:02:50.13\00:02:53.61 where somebody that didn't have the strength find 00:02:53.64\00:02:56.06 supernatural strength to lift or, and it's usually 00:02:56.09\00:02:58.78 adrenaline or similar brain chemistry that's flowing 00:02:58.81\00:03:02.26 and helping the body cope with that stress. 00:03:02.29\00:03:04.01 But it's a God built component in there. 00:03:04.04\00:03:06.46 Yes, it is. And it all stems from the brain 00:03:06.49\00:03:10.67 and coming in. Now what are some of the 00:03:10.70\00:03:13.11 other components, is stress something that's 00:03:13.14\00:03:16.74 real or perceived whether it's a combination 00:03:16.77\00:03:19.04 of both, how would you define stress? 00:03:19.07\00:03:20.94 Well stress is a reaction to some aggression. 00:03:20.97\00:03:27.42 If this aggression can be brought to us or 00:03:27.45\00:03:31.20 we can create that type by aggression 00:03:31.23\00:03:33.60 and normally stress starts with something that 00:03:33.63\00:03:38.27 happened to a person and I have a graphic 00:03:38.30\00:03:41.53 of a snake here just to show the person when 00:03:41.56\00:03:46.23 you see that snake for the first time 00:03:46.26\00:03:49.02 you get all the reactions that the person 00:03:49.05\00:03:52.45 has under stress that are normal, so you get scared 00:03:52.48\00:03:56.01 and you are ready to run, you are ready to 00:03:56.04\00:03:59.66 get strength to kill the snake and to do 00:03:59.69\00:04:02.65 whatever, this is a normal reaction. 00:04:02.68\00:04:05.66 Right. Acute, short, the problem is when 00:04:05.69\00:04:10.57 you have a rattle snake around you, 00:04:10.60\00:04:13.62 24 hours per day, I mean 7 days per week, 00:04:13.65\00:04:17.44 I mean 30 days per month and then. All the time. 00:04:17.47\00:04:19.76 And then this reaction becomes a disease, 00:04:19.79\00:04:23.09 so you have your levels of adrenaline and cortisol, 00:04:23.12\00:04:27.65 the stress hormones high all the time 00:04:27.68\00:04:30.17 then you will have problem with the disease. 00:04:30.20\00:04:32.63 That's correct, I was thinking when you 00:04:32.66\00:04:35.69 said about the snake, to you or me maybe 00:04:35.72\00:04:39.20 that would be something very stressful 00:04:39.23\00:04:41.48 because we're not used to seeing them everyday, but 00:04:41.51\00:04:43.15 to us one of my friends that's doing research on 00:04:43.18\00:04:45.52 rattlesnakes. He actually has to go hunt them 00:04:45.55\00:04:47.68 and he deals with them from day to day, 00:04:47.71\00:04:49.25 but his stress level is very low when 00:04:49.28\00:04:51.28 he sees a rattlesnake. He knows how to deal 00:04:51.31\00:04:52.93 with it, he knows how to determine 00:04:52.96\00:04:54.65 which kind it is, so stress is something 00:04:54.68\00:04:57.08 in our mind that's perceived and how much 00:04:57.11\00:05:00.29 control we have over it. So, a lot of people, 00:05:00.32\00:05:02.97 the same stress for you may not be the same 00:05:03.00\00:05:05.42 stress for me or the same stress that 00:05:05.45\00:05:07.77 you maybe having may not be the one I have, 00:05:07.80\00:05:09.74 and the one I have may not be the same one you 00:05:09.77\00:05:11.49 have, but so it's something that 00:05:11.52\00:05:13.66 we perceive in different, different ways. 00:05:13.69\00:05:15.51 Yeah, the perception is very important 00:05:15.54\00:05:18.54 and how the person sees the situation, 00:05:18.57\00:05:21.42 so if you see the situation as something that 00:05:21.45\00:05:24.75 will hurt you then you start having the effects 00:05:24.78\00:05:29.40 of the hormones on that. If the situation 00:05:29.43\00:05:32.39 is not hurtful, so you is not, what is the 00:05:32.42\00:05:36.52 stress for you might not be for me 00:05:36.55\00:05:38.55 and I have another picture there that tells the 00:05:38.58\00:05:43.62 Bible story about Balaam and he was a prophet that 00:05:43.65\00:05:48.94 we know they started since we were kids 00:05:48.97\00:05:52.58 and then Balaam was running, riding his donkey 00:05:52.61\00:05:57.85 and the donkey was pressing his legs to the, 00:05:57.88\00:06:01.87 to the walls there and, and then he was 00:06:01.90\00:06:07.47 spanking the donkey several times and then all of a 00:06:07.50\00:06:11.14 sudden he figured out that the donkey was not 00:06:11.17\00:06:15.24 going ahead because there was an 00:06:15.27\00:06:17.34 angel ready to kill Balaam. 00:06:17.37\00:06:19.09 Right. So, then he looks like his eyes 00:06:19.12\00:06:21.79 were open and then he could see the 00:06:21.82\00:06:25.12 big picture and that's the word that we use 00:06:25.15\00:06:27.46 in stress. You have to try to see 00:06:27.49\00:06:29.83 the big picture, find meaning 00:06:29.86\00:06:32.86 for the situation and try to understand 00:06:32.89\00:06:35.32 why the situation is hurting you or 00:06:35.35\00:06:38.75 why people is aggressive towards you. 00:06:38.78\00:06:41.96 So understanding is part of the issue and how 00:06:41.99\00:06:45.74 to deal with it or understanding how when 00:06:45.77\00:06:47.90 to stop it too. Speaking of donkeys, 00:06:47.93\00:06:50.61 I was reminded of zebras and zebras don't get 00:06:50.64\00:06:53.77 ulcers and some I guess it was a veterinary or 00:06:53.80\00:06:57.03 somebody that studied zebra that noticed this is 00:06:57.06\00:06:58.89 interesting we never did a biopsy or studied a 00:06:58.92\00:07:02.18 zebra that had ulcers, so they did more 00:07:02.21\00:07:04.46 research on it and they noticed that zebras 00:07:04.49\00:07:06.77 like most other animals, cows or most other 00:07:06.80\00:07:09.61 ones when most of the day they're spending 00:07:09.64\00:07:12.19 eating and grazing on grass and they are not 00:07:12.22\00:07:14.60 stressed, they are happy zebras or happy cows 00:07:14.63\00:07:16.95 and but that doesn't mean they always live that 00:07:16.98\00:07:19.72 way, when there is a lion or a predator or something 00:07:19.75\00:07:22.08 comes to them they get stressed 00:07:22.11\00:07:23.74 and the brain chemistry flows in and they start 00:07:23.77\00:07:26.30 running and escaping that danger. 00:07:26.33\00:07:28.43 So they need the stress to survive, 00:07:28.46\00:07:30.22 but they don't live under that thought of 00:07:30.25\00:07:33.17 oh, there is that lion or that predator 00:07:33.20\00:07:35.03 all the time. Yeah, that's how we often times 00:07:35.06\00:07:37.68 live under constant stress, so what are some 00:07:37.71\00:07:40.74 of the consequences of living under 00:07:40.77\00:07:43.84 constant stress, what may happen 00:07:43.87\00:07:45.35 to the mind or the body. 00:07:45.38\00:07:47.58 Yes, I believe on one or on another way 00:07:47.61\00:07:52.88 all the diseases can be consequence or can be 00:07:52.91\00:07:56.91 a cause of stress, so when you have a disease 00:07:56.94\00:07:59.94 that affects you, you develop stress 00:07:59.97\00:08:03.48 a reaction of the disease. When you have 00:08:03.51\00:08:06.50 stress because of something else 00:08:06.53\00:08:08.86 then this will create increase the risk of 00:08:08.89\00:08:12.04 that disease and as you mentioned in the 00:08:12.07\00:08:14.40 beginning that those disease can be 00:08:14.43\00:08:16.53 a reaction or an overreaction 00:08:16.56\00:08:20.89 of the immune system. So allergies, 00:08:20.92\00:08:24.02 even asthma or arthritis are related 00:08:24.05\00:08:27.90 somehow to this overreaction of the 00:08:27.93\00:08:31.13 immune system and then there is, there is a 00:08:31.16\00:08:33.76 suppression of the immune system because 00:08:33.79\00:08:36.09 of one hormone called cortisol, 00:08:36.12\00:08:38.99 then you have high risk of infections 00:08:39.02\00:08:42.08 when you are under chronic 00:08:42.11\00:08:44.80 constant stress in your life. 00:08:44.83\00:08:46.94 And that's why we are trying to avoid that 00:08:46.97\00:08:48.73 constant chronic levels. There are some 00:08:48.76\00:08:53.06 practical ways now we may want to talk about 00:08:53.09\00:08:55.04 well you may be viewing and saying I 00:08:55.07\00:08:57.68 know exactly what you're talking about, 00:08:57.71\00:08:59.28 I live under that constant stress, I am 00:08:59.31\00:09:01.06 always thinking of the what if and what if 00:09:01.09\00:09:03.29 might happen or not happen and what can I do, 00:09:03.32\00:09:06.42 what are some of the practical things 00:09:06.45\00:09:08.01 that we can incorporate in our lives. 00:09:08.04\00:09:09.75 How do we deal with stress? 00:09:09.78\00:09:11.61 Well, I think the first point is to assess 00:09:11.64\00:09:15.14 what kind of stress you have or how is stress 00:09:15.17\00:09:19.15 is affecting you, so you should check if the 00:09:19.18\00:09:22.77 stress is from work, is from friends, is 00:09:22.80\00:09:25.73 from your family, internal stress or 00:09:25.76\00:09:29.81 if the stress is caused by your behavior 00:09:29.84\00:09:32.86 or if your stress is caused by the environment, 00:09:32.89\00:09:35.88 so a good stress assessment 00:09:35.91\00:09:38.29 is fundamental, the first step. 00:09:38.32\00:09:40.24 Perhaps you could describe a piece of 00:09:40.27\00:09:42.90 paper and write down how this stress 00:09:42.93\00:09:46.66 why and so listing the things that stress it 00:09:46.69\00:09:48.86 or ask somebody to interview you, why 00:09:48.89\00:09:51.52 you stress, yes, and that would help you figure out 00:09:51.55\00:09:52.92 what's going on. 00:09:52.95\00:09:54.01 Yeah, the first question that we ask 00:09:54.04\00:09:56.05 is that do you have time to do all the things 00:09:56.08\00:09:58.75 that you wanna do in your life and then 00:09:58.78\00:10:01.96 we have a clear first question and then 00:10:01.99\00:10:07.30 we go over and see what else is 00:10:07.33\00:10:10.01 the things that are competing, competing 00:10:10.04\00:10:13.78 with that for that time, yeah. That special time. 00:10:13.81\00:10:16.30 And then once we make the list 00:10:16.33\00:10:17.74 and we find okay these are my causes, 00:10:17.77\00:10:19.81 where do we follow with that. 00:10:19.84\00:10:22.84 Well, we have the second and the third point. 00:10:22.87\00:10:25.10 The second is try to neutralize 00:10:25.13\00:10:28.21 the stressors and the term and the third would be 00:10:28.24\00:10:31.77 how to deal with the consequences when you 00:10:31.80\00:10:34.88 cannot neutralize the stressors. The 00:10:34.91\00:10:37.71 stressors are those things that cause 00:10:37.74\00:10:40.10 us or hurt us or create the situation, 00:10:40.13\00:10:44.00 the reaction. So all the things that 00:10:44.03\00:10:46.69 happen should be the stress, so how 00:10:46.72\00:10:49.24 can we modify them and manipulate 00:10:49.27\00:10:52.32 them and so some of them you can, some 00:10:52.35\00:10:54.91 of them you cannot like if you are, 00:10:54.94\00:10:57.44 if your problem is with time, so we ask 00:10:57.47\00:11:01.04 the person to fill up a sheet with all the 00:11:01.07\00:11:05.37 activities that a person does and then we can 00:11:05.40\00:11:08.38 somehow identify gaps of time that he is losing 00:11:08.41\00:11:12.95 or lack of further activities that he should do 00:11:12.98\00:11:17.01 on that and then organize his life on that. 00:11:17.04\00:11:20.19 Make a schedule in other words, exactly, 00:11:20.22\00:11:22.42 well this is taking too long or this is 00:11:22.45\00:11:24.01 I could use some more time here or 00:11:24.04\00:11:25.75 this one activity really stresses me out, maybe 00:11:25.78\00:11:28.45 I can add some more time before or during 00:11:28.48\00:11:30.88 and take some out of this, so organizing 00:11:30.91\00:11:33.20 life is one way to deal with consequences, 00:11:33.23\00:11:37.44 what's causing it. 00:11:37.47\00:11:39.06 Yeah, we are talking about the stressors 00:11:39.09\00:11:41.47 first still and then there are other things, 00:11:41.50\00:11:44.25 improve communications, sometimes we have a 00:11:44.28\00:11:46.52 problem in work because we don't say the 00:11:46.55\00:11:49.78 right word or we say the wrong word 00:11:49.81\00:11:52.05 and we don't listen to people or we mind read 00:11:52.08\00:11:56.02 and before you say something I know you 00:11:56.05\00:11:57.99 are against me and then this creates 00:11:58.02\00:12:00.50 a big stress in the work cycle. 00:12:00.53\00:12:04.53 Right. So, we should work on that, 00:12:04.56\00:12:07.89 we still working in the stressors. 00:12:07.92\00:12:10.04 Okay. Another one is priorities, 00:12:10.07\00:12:13.55 check what is your main priority in life. 00:12:13.58\00:12:16.05 I have asking in stress seminars 00:12:16.08\00:12:19.21 mostly I got three answers when they 00:12:19.24\00:12:22.36 say put the three main priorities or the main 00:12:22.39\00:12:24.59 priorities and then this goes around God, 00:12:24.62\00:12:27.35 family, and work and they go around 00:12:27.38\00:12:31.49 these. Okay and then, you're saying list 00:12:31.52\00:12:34.89 whatever is number 1 number 2 number 3, 00:12:34.92\00:12:37.62 your priorities. Yeah. And then focus all your 00:12:37.65\00:12:40.60 daily schedule, your activities according to 00:12:40.63\00:12:43.70 those priority. Yeah, I remember one 00:12:43.73\00:12:45.45 person put home as the main priority, 00:12:45.48\00:12:48.96 then I have started exploring with him 00:12:48.99\00:12:51.05 and then we got that he didn't spent 00:12:51.08\00:12:54.28 any time with his family and say what's 00:12:54.31\00:12:56.31 going on here, you put home and you don't 00:12:56.34\00:12:59.11 have time for well, but I have to work 00:12:59.14\00:13:01.28 to make a lot of money to provide for my 00:13:01.31\00:13:03.60 family. You see, well, I think we 00:13:03.63\00:13:06.05 have to think about that better, because 00:13:06.08\00:13:08.42 it's not if you are absent you cannot help your 00:13:08.45\00:13:12.93 home or your family as much if you are present 00:13:12.96\00:13:16.44 there and try to raise your kids and try to raise your 00:13:16.47\00:13:20.22 family in a good environment. 00:13:20.25\00:13:22.87 Right. So, you cannot be outside 00:13:22.90\00:13:24.91 them and thinking that you are putting 00:13:24.94\00:13:26.67 as a priority and so we try to change 00:13:26.70\00:13:29.43 I mean the way to prioritize things in 00:13:29.46\00:13:31.76 life. And it almost sounds like this might 00:13:31.79\00:13:33.89 take so much time that, that even would be 00:13:33.92\00:13:35.67 stressful to try to organize, but it 00:13:35.70\00:13:37.24 would be a good investment because 00:13:37.27\00:13:39.03 taking some time and organizing 00:13:39.06\00:13:41.38 what are my priorities, what's causing 00:13:41.41\00:13:43.59 me stress, where's it coming from 00:13:43.62\00:13:44.90 and try to build the strategic plan would 00:13:44.93\00:13:47.38 have long-term beneficial effects, 00:13:47.41\00:13:50.24 we still had one more. Yeah, the second, 00:13:50.27\00:13:53.06 I mean the third level, we did assessment, 00:13:53.09\00:13:55.54 we checked the stressors, now we will 00:13:55.57\00:13:57.41 deal with the consequence and when I am 00:13:57.44\00:14:00.46 talking about consequence is when a person 00:14:00.49\00:14:03.56 is working like you have a boss that 00:14:03.59\00:14:06.01 you don't appreciate much, but you 00:14:06.04\00:14:08.76 cannot change, you need to keep your job 00:14:08.79\00:14:11.09 and you have to maintain your income, 00:14:11.12\00:14:14.66 but you still have the situation. 00:14:14.69\00:14:17.10 The boss does not like you 00:14:17.13\00:14:18.65 or you don't like the boss, what can 00:14:18.68\00:14:20.72 you do, so we advice that a person 00:14:20.75\00:14:23.38 in that situation develops activities 00:14:23.41\00:14:27.23 that will counteract the stress that we call 00:14:27.26\00:14:31.64 parasympathetic activities. Parasympathetic. 00:14:31.67\00:14:37.39 Yes. Okay, please break that down or 00:14:37.42\00:14:39.96 explain it a little bit. Well, 00:14:39.99\00:14:40.96 when you are under stress 00:14:40.97\00:14:42.67 you stimulate, you put to work 00:14:42.70\00:14:46.31 the sympathetic system that has 00:14:46.34\00:14:49.15 adrenaline, cortisol, noradrenaline, 00:14:49.18\00:14:53.57 epinephrine, some hormones that will 00:14:53.60\00:14:56.91 create all of these reactions in your body, 00:14:56.94\00:15:01.13 yeah. So the parasympathetic mostly 00:15:01.16\00:15:06.06 has one substance called acetylcholine. 00:15:06.09\00:15:08.77 Acetylcholine is the substance that will 00:15:08.80\00:15:11.72 counteract these hormones and will bring 00:15:11.75\00:15:14.15 down the blood pressure, bring down the heart 00:15:14.18\00:15:16.42 rate, bring down the blood sugar, so 00:15:16.45\00:15:18.72 this is what I mean, we have to accelerate 00:15:18.75\00:15:23.23 or activate the parasympathetic system. 00:15:23.26\00:15:27.24 To bring that homeostasis to that 00:15:27.27\00:15:29.11 normality back, exactly, yes. 00:15:29.14\00:15:30.45 What are the things that activate this 00:15:30.48\00:15:33.02 system, the parasympathetic system is the one 00:15:33.05\00:15:36.02 that happens when you go to a concert 00:15:36.05\00:15:38.53 and you are classical music concert and in two 00:15:38.56\00:15:43.55 minutes you are sleepy. So why is that 00:15:43.58\00:15:47.58 is because the sympathetic system is 00:15:47.61\00:15:50.11 activated and then brings everything 00:15:50.14\00:15:52.50 down and relaxes you, so we have to find 00:15:52.53\00:15:55.52 those activities that really produce 00:15:55.55\00:15:58.41 relaxation. And it may not always 00:15:58.44\00:16:00.39 be classical music that is what's bringing the 00:16:00.42\00:16:03.94 relaxation to you, maybe it's doing art 00:16:03.97\00:16:06.89 work or going to the beach and just sitting and 00:16:06.92\00:16:09.35 listening to the waves and the birds. 00:16:09.38\00:16:10.91 Being out in nature, all these things 00:16:10.94\00:16:13.42 can really help bringing the sympathetic 00:16:13.45\00:16:17.50 into activating and bringing everything 00:16:17.53\00:16:19.82 back to normal. Perfect, that's what 00:16:19.85\00:16:21.78 we and then massage, Jacuzzi, reading 00:16:21.81\00:16:26.00 a good book that is relaxing, all of the 00:16:26.03\00:16:29.17 activities are important for those that 00:16:29.20\00:16:31.25 have stress. Music is one of the best, 00:16:31.28\00:16:35.05 I mean, listen to music or how about learning a 00:16:35.08\00:16:38.75 musical instrument, something that you 00:16:38.78\00:16:41.56 have the opportunity to relax 00:16:41.59\00:16:44.10 and that's the point. We can do some 00:16:44.13\00:16:47.14 techniques for that to bring relaxation, 00:16:47.17\00:16:49.95 so we can do deep breathing, 00:16:49.98\00:16:53.00 so we breathe in and count until 5 then 00:16:53.03\00:16:56.50 we breathe out and count until five. 00:16:56.53\00:16:58.47 We can do the muscle relaxation like you 00:16:58.50\00:17:03.36 contract your arms and count until five 00:17:03.39\00:17:06.19 then you relax your arms, you can do with 00:17:06.22\00:17:08.59 other muscles in the system, in the body, 00:17:08.62\00:17:11.98 right, the same thing contract for five seconds, 00:17:12.01\00:17:14.67 relax for five seconds, then you can do 00:17:14.70\00:17:17.23 your face you contract your face and make 00:17:17.26\00:17:19.58 a big face, five seconds then relax and then you 00:17:19.61\00:17:24.23 do that over and over until you sure it's the relaxation. 00:17:24.26\00:17:30.23 Training the mind. You're training the mind 00:17:30.26\00:17:32.05 to be relaxed. Relax the muscles 00:17:32.08\00:17:34.73 and the chemicals that we don't see, 00:17:34.76\00:17:36.66 but are very present and active in 00:17:36.69\00:17:38.83 the mind and that effects the rest of the body. 00:17:38.86\00:17:41.19 So, those are some practical 00:17:41.22\00:17:42.90 exercises now it's always different 00:17:42.93\00:17:45.20 for different people, so we have to 00:17:45.23\00:17:46.62 always say well this may not work 00:17:46.65\00:17:48.51 maybe us you know the music may be 00:17:48.54\00:17:51.07 a stressor for somebody, so pick up 00:17:51.10\00:17:54.58 lifting music or the soft music for that you, 00:17:54.61\00:17:57.90 makes you relax a little bit, maybe for some people 00:17:57.93\00:18:01.88 it's working on their car, mechanics 00:18:01.91\00:18:03.94 and that relaxes them. So, it's really looking 00:18:03.97\00:18:06.55 maybe making a list, so you know 00:18:06.58\00:18:08.37 okay when I'm stressed I need to do some more of 00:18:08.40\00:18:10.03 these activities. Yeah, you chose to do, 00:18:10.06\00:18:13.96 you can chose to do an exercise activity 00:18:13.99\00:18:16.52 that provides this relaxation and then 00:18:16.55\00:18:19.78 something that you have fun and then 00:18:19.81\00:18:23.45 you have both effect of the physical activity 00:18:23.48\00:18:26.26 and fun. They create something that is 00:18:26.29\00:18:32.81 called echo therapy or echo therapy, 00:18:32.84\00:18:39.16 it means that you go to nature 00:18:39.19\00:18:40.16 and then you go to nature just 00:18:40.17\00:18:43.69 to walk in nature and then this they measure the 00:18:43.72\00:18:47.73 effects of this in your stress level and to control 00:18:47.76\00:18:51.89 disease, they promote this as a parasympathetic activity, 00:18:51.92\00:18:56.08 walking in a trail, in the woods 00:18:56.11\00:18:58.99 as very beneficial for your health. 00:18:59.02\00:19:02.97 That's excellent now I'm probably thinking 00:19:03.00\00:19:05.61 somebody watching saying, well I have 00:19:05.64\00:19:07.86 no time at all for, anytime for 00:19:07.89\00:19:10.86 myself or to relax or to think of what I can 00:19:10.89\00:19:13.31 do. So I think the thing we need to do 00:19:13.34\00:19:16.92 is train our mind to be in that state and 00:19:16.95\00:19:19.73 for me personally and I think for many other people 00:19:19.76\00:19:22.10 and for yourself is finding a little bit more 00:19:22.13\00:19:24.46 trust in God or finding Bible verses 00:19:24.49\00:19:27.40 that bring that relaxation. I like the verse, 00:19:27.43\00:19:30.14 where Jesus tells us not to worry about 00:19:30.17\00:19:32.56 tomorrow, that tomorrow will worry for 00:19:32.59\00:19:34.15 itself and a lot of times we worry so much 00:19:34.18\00:19:36.65 about the future when the present has 00:19:36.68\00:19:39.76 enough to worry about and to take care of 00:19:39.79\00:19:41.63 and I like Jesus counsel of just focus on 00:19:41.66\00:19:44.69 what you can do now, what needs to be done 00:19:44.72\00:19:46.99 now and let me take care of the future. 00:19:47.02\00:19:48.96 Yeah in fact people are afraid of the 00:19:48.99\00:19:52.22 future and they hence and chose they have 00:19:52.25\00:19:55.21 anxiety about their future and 00:19:55.24\00:19:57.83 at the same time they are depressive 00:19:57.86\00:20:00.16 about the past, I mean what happened 00:20:00.19\00:20:02.72 in the past they are all what happened, 00:20:02.75\00:20:05.62 why did it happen to me and then what 00:20:05.65\00:20:09.27 we have is today, right, this is our obligation 00:20:09.30\00:20:14.14 and this is what is reserved for us, the 00:20:14.17\00:20:17.20 daily activities, the daily things that we have to 00:20:17.23\00:20:21.81 change or go through, 00:20:21.84\00:20:23.73 that's 24 hours or 12 hour whatever. 00:20:23.76\00:20:27.03 Right. What a beautiful promise that we 00:20:27.06\00:20:29.27 have from God that he forgives all 00:20:29.30\00:20:30.81 our sins and we don't naturally revisit them, 00:20:30.84\00:20:33.24 once they're forgiven they're done with and we 00:20:33.27\00:20:34.80 can worry about today and to know that 00:20:34.83\00:20:37.48 we don't have, you know, we just have today 00:20:37.51\00:20:39.96 guaranteed, we can't change the past, 00:20:39.99\00:20:41.45 that's you know if we have something bothering us, 00:20:41.48\00:20:45.43 let God take care of that. 00:20:45.46\00:20:46.64 You have the present and move forward 00:20:46.67\00:20:48.46 from there. Another one of my favorite 00:20:48.49\00:20:51.94 books is Philippians and Philippians 4:13, 00:20:51.97\00:20:54.29 where I can do all things through Christ, 00:20:54.32\00:20:56.45 who strengthens me. And to know that 00:20:56.48\00:20:58.33 I'm not by myself, because that stresses a lot of 00:20:58.36\00:21:00.33 people out to know that I need to do this, 00:21:00.36\00:21:02.50 I need to do that, and I become so 00:21:02.53\00:21:04.52 big and God becomes smaller and smaller 00:21:04.55\00:21:06.43 and to realize that God is our main help 00:21:06.46\00:21:09.96 and he shows us where we can get more 00:21:09.99\00:21:11.81 help also from any friends or relatives and 00:21:11.84\00:21:14.35 maybe delegating some things. Yeah on this, 00:21:14.38\00:21:18.56 on this way we can say that, we can use 00:21:18.59\00:21:24.01 these things as meditation. There are several 00:21:24.04\00:21:26.68 types of meditation nowadays, one type in 00:21:26.71\00:21:30.03 particular they ask you to go to a level that 00:21:30.06\00:21:33.85 you don't think anything, than to reach the 00:21:33.88\00:21:37.15 nothingness. I don't buy much that, it's much 00:21:37.18\00:21:40.98 better when you meditate with a mind focusing 00:21:41.01\00:21:44.78 that you are asking the supernatural, I mean, 00:21:44.81\00:21:48.84 the higher power or whatever you call God, 00:21:48.87\00:21:51.37 that will take care of your life and then you 00:21:51.40\00:21:56.45 relax because you are putting his and so is 00:21:56.48\00:21:58.87 the meditation with a very 00:21:58.90\00:22:00.86 powerful process of thinking. 00:22:00.89\00:22:04.79 Right, right, well if you read the Bible 00:22:04.82\00:22:06.58 and know that God is our creator, 00:22:06.61\00:22:08.06 that he is a creator of all things, 00:22:08.09\00:22:09.46 that he is all powerful 00:22:09.49\00:22:11.13 and that helps us realize, 00:22:11.16\00:22:13.46 well if God has all the power, then I can 00:22:13.49\00:22:16.02 trust him and I can learn to 00:22:16.05\00:22:17.74 walk in his ways and to be taken 00:22:17.77\00:22:20.32 care by him. Do you have any other 00:22:20.35\00:22:22.20 Bible verses that you would like to share? 00:22:22.23\00:22:23.92 Yeah, I have, I have another one 00:22:23.95\00:22:27.31 that is in Philippians also, that talks 00:22:27.34\00:22:31.56 about when you have, let's see if I have 00:22:31.59\00:22:34.07 here, when you have Philippians 00:22:34.10\00:22:37.40 what's the name, the number here, 00:22:37.43\00:22:40.58 4:6-7, don't be anxious about anything, but 00:22:40.61\00:22:46.16 in everything by prayer and petition, 00:22:46.19\00:22:48.18 with thanksgiving present your requests 00:22:48.21\00:22:50.17 to God. And the peace of God which 00:22:50.20\00:22:53.13 transcends all understanding will guard your 00:22:53.16\00:22:55.06 hearts and your mind in Christ Jesus. 00:22:55.09\00:22:57.05 So, again we go to the meditation 00:22:57.08\00:23:00.82 with the principle, if you have anything 00:23:00.85\00:23:03.64 that is troubling you, you are anxious, 00:23:03.67\00:23:06.30 you take that to the Lord. 00:23:06.33\00:23:08.17 He might not answer the thing that 00:23:08.20\00:23:11.34 you have that is causing the anxiety 00:23:11.37\00:23:13.66 as you want them or want him to answer. 00:23:13.69\00:23:17.63 But he will give you the peace and that's what 00:23:17.66\00:23:19.74 we need. So, well if I have to accept 00:23:19.77\00:23:22.45 something give me that peace to accept 00:23:22.48\00:23:24.73 and there is even the sovereignty prayer 00:23:24.76\00:23:28.46 that we pray to the Lord to accept the things that 00:23:28.49\00:23:31.70 we cannot change. This is a very powerful thing 00:23:31.73\00:23:34.98 for a stress accept the things that 00:23:35.01\00:23:37.28 we cannot change. And to realize that 00:23:37.31\00:23:40.16 we can't do anything about it, but God can. 00:23:40.19\00:23:42.27 Exactly, yeah, yeah. 00:23:42.30\00:23:43.83 The same verse Philippians 4:6-7 00:23:43.86\00:23:47.15 is one of my favorites also as I said 00:23:47.18\00:23:49.26 Philippians it's a very good book and I like the 00:23:49.29\00:23:53.05 part where it says and be thankful for all 00:23:53.08\00:23:54.95 things and I've tried that personally in my life, 00:23:54.98\00:23:57.82 a lot of times we look at the negative side 00:23:57.85\00:23:59.29 of things and if we learn to thank 00:23:59.32\00:24:01.05 God even say Lord I don't understand 00:24:01.08\00:24:03.31 this, but I thank you that I have the 00:24:03.34\00:24:05.13 opportunity to be living today and that you have 00:24:05.16\00:24:08.24 a plan and that you have the power. 00:24:08.27\00:24:09.97 And to start thanking him that the stress 00:24:10.00\00:24:12.66 and that's our perceiving becomes less and less and 00:24:12.69\00:24:15.83 I just you know want everybody to 00:24:15.86\00:24:18.25 enjoy the blessings that God has for us, 00:24:18.28\00:24:21.07 because we know we live in a sinful world, 00:24:21.10\00:24:23.51 there is plenty of negative things and there is 00:24:23.54\00:24:25.68 too much to do all the time, but to 00:24:25.71\00:24:28.14 realize that we are limited God is the only one who 00:24:28.17\00:24:30.46 is unlimited, he has all the power and all the 00:24:30.49\00:24:32.76 strength and to really put ourselves in 00:24:32.79\00:24:34.77 this hands and to realize that 00:24:34.80\00:24:37.16 we can learn some things from the animals too, 00:24:37.19\00:24:39.45 from the zebras and the cows, which they learn to 00:24:39.48\00:24:42.20 when you know things that can't change they 00:24:42.23\00:24:44.09 don't worry about, you know and we've been 00:24:44.12\00:24:47.40 given the capability to think and to reason and 00:24:47.43\00:24:49.73 to know that we can live, learn a little bit from this. 00:24:49.76\00:24:53.88 That's why if you put this in a context 00:24:53.91\00:24:56.97 of stress and spirituality you can say 00:24:57.00\00:25:00.52 that the stress is when the enemy 00:25:00.55\00:25:03.14 put things in your life to deter you 00:25:03.17\00:25:06.36 from God. So if we use this mechanism, 00:25:06.39\00:25:11.07 the solution is to go back to the Lord 00:25:11.10\00:25:13.41 and I like the verse in Matthew, 00:25:13.44\00:25:17.21 in John 16:33, that we say, 00:25:17.24\00:25:21.71 I have told you these things, so that in 00:25:21.74\00:25:24.24 me you have peace. In this world you 00:25:24.27\00:25:27.60 will have trouble. But I overcome the world. 00:25:27.63\00:25:30.70 I put here in the world, you will have 00:25:30.73\00:25:35.18 stress, not trouble, stress. Umm! Umm! 00:25:35.21\00:25:37.29 He was preparing us for that, in the 00:25:37.32\00:25:40.13 world you will have stress, but 00:25:40.16\00:25:42.66 take heart, trust in me, I have overcame 00:25:42.69\00:25:46.55 the world and so that's the point. 00:25:46.58\00:25:49.53 We have to remember the three 00:25:49.56\00:25:52.33 priorities, we have to go back 00:25:52.36\00:25:54.14 to the main priority that I would say 00:25:54.17\00:25:57.68 is God. People say well, but I have 00:25:57.71\00:26:00.59 to work and I have to take care of my family. 00:26:00.62\00:26:03.77 Once you put God first, the other two 00:26:03.80\00:26:07.10 will come along, the other two will be 00:26:07.13\00:26:09.73 a part of that because God will guide 00:26:09.76\00:26:11.75 you to take care of your job and to take 00:26:11.78\00:26:14.91 care of your family. Exactly, and I think 00:26:14.94\00:26:18.02 that's where our topic for today's stress centers on 00:26:18.05\00:26:20.95 God, because even Jesus said you will have 00:26:20.98\00:26:23.90 trouble like you told us and told our 00:26:23.93\00:26:25.73 listeners, but to expect the troubles, to know that 00:26:25.76\00:26:29.11 you know they will be there as long as we live, 00:26:29.14\00:26:31.31 it's like knowing and learning how to drive 00:26:31.34\00:26:35.44 and knowing that you have a brake pedal or something 00:26:35.47\00:26:37.24 crosses a road that you can slow down and 00:26:37.27\00:26:39.23 learn to use that sometimes, to slow down, 00:26:39.26\00:26:41.17 go around the troubles or go around our 00:26:41.20\00:26:44.07 issues that are dealing with us and always with God's 00:26:44.10\00:26:46.37 guidance, always with God's help 00:26:46.40\00:26:48.18 and that will help us through, 00:26:48.21\00:26:49.68 through these hard times. 00:26:49.71\00:26:50.99 Another thing is that 00:26:51.02\00:26:53.52 what happened to Balaam is that 00:26:53.55\00:26:55.27 he didn't see the big picture, 00:26:55.30\00:26:57.62 with God he will be able or he will make 00:26:57.65\00:27:01.36 you able to see a little more 00:27:01.39\00:27:03.13 what is happening around. So for many 00:27:03.16\00:27:06.19 situations that you are in being with 00:27:06.22\00:27:09.76 the Lord will clear your, open your eyes 00:27:09.79\00:27:12.33 to see what is going on around. 00:27:12.36\00:27:14.30 Exactly. Stress will be around us, we need to look 00:27:14.33\00:27:18.33 around, see the big picture and learn not to 00:27:18.36\00:27:20.64 live with stress constantly in our lives. 00:27:20.67\00:27:24.15 Dr. Dos Santos, I thank you for all 00:27:24.18\00:27:26.39 the good help you've given us to learn 00:27:26.42\00:27:28.80 and to deal with and cope with stress, 00:27:28.83\00:27:30.60 your knowledge and your presence has been very 00:27:30.63\00:27:32.85 helpful.
