The following program presents principles 00:00:01.98\00:00:02.95 designed to promote good health and is not intended 00:00:02.96\00:00:05.03 to take the place of personalized 00:00:05.06\00:00:06.59 professional care. The opinions and ideas expressed 00:00:06.62\00:00:09.93 are those of the speaker. Viewers are encouraged 00:00:10.27\00:00:12.85 to draw their own conclusions 00:00:12.88\00:00:14.24 about the information presented. 00:00:14.27\00:00:15.83 Welcome to Wonderfully Made. 00:00:36.34\00:00:37.64 I'm your host Claudio Japas, I'm happy to be with you. 00:00:38.06\00:00:40.63 I'm a Doctoral Student at Loma Linda University 00:00:40.66\00:00:43.88 in the Preventive Care Program. 00:00:43.91\00:00:45.26 Today, we will be talking about a topic 00:00:45.85\00:00:48.25 that affects everyone cancer. 00:00:48.28\00:00:50.86 Cancer is all around us and even though 00:00:51.62\00:00:53.08 we would prefer to talk about the healthy things 00:00:53.11\00:00:55.50 sin has put us calm, thus pandered on human beings. 00:00:55.53\00:00:58.74 And we have to talk about the diseases. 00:00:59.53\00:01:01.53 Joining me is Dr. Dos Santos. 00:01:01.71\00:01:03.73 He is a professor at Loma Linda University 00:01:03.76\00:01:06.06 in the Preventive Care Program also 00:01:06.09\00:01:07.83 and I'm happy to have you with me today. 00:01:08.25\00:01:10.05 Thank you very much it's a pleasure to be here 00:01:11.08\00:01:12.81 and talk about this important topic. 00:01:12.84\00:01:15.62 I believe we can say for sure that every single family 00:01:15.65\00:01:21.08 that we know in this country and why not say around 00:01:21.11\00:01:24.60 the world have one case of cancer in the family. 00:01:24.63\00:01:28.06 So, we've all been affected by cancer one way 00:01:28.98\00:01:30.86 or another maybe not in our family, 00:01:30.89\00:01:32.14 but our neighbor or friend or somebody 00:01:32.17\00:01:33.77 you know. What is cancer though? 00:01:33.80\00:01:36.43 Cancer is development of is when a cell develop too fast 00:01:36.88\00:01:43.10 and grow too fast beyond the normal growth pattern 00:01:43.13\00:01:49.85 and this is because the identity of the cell 00:01:50.62\00:01:53.70 is altered in better terms or in more scientific 00:01:53.73\00:01:59.36 terms is DNA of the cell that is altered 00:01:59.39\00:02:02.89 by any reason and this cells start growing abnormal. 00:02:03.20\00:02:07.23 Cancer is more then 100 diseases. 00:02:07.86\00:02:10.63 It's spread in different organs of the body. 00:02:11.85\00:02:14.10 So, it's basically a cell doing what is not suppose 00:02:14.78\00:02:17.47 to do. Almost we could simplify to that point 00:02:17.50\00:02:20.34 or do producing in the way it's not suppose to. 00:02:20.37\00:02:22.50 And it happens to everyone. 00:02:23.18\00:02:26.15 So, is a something that if we wait long enough 00:02:26.18\00:02:28.11 will happen everybody will acquire? 00:02:28.14\00:02:30.51 Well depends on the lifestyle. 00:02:32.04\00:02:34.32 Sometimes you have mechanisms in your body 00:02:34.35\00:02:38.93 that will fight and will kill the erratic cell, 00:02:38.96\00:02:42.52 cancer cell. And then you don't have the cancer, 00:02:42.55\00:02:45.91 so I would say that everyone has cancer cells 00:02:45.94\00:02:48.83 and depends on how you develop your lifestyle 00:02:49.34\00:02:51.77 you will have cancer or not. For a cell to become 00:02:51.80\00:02:56.57 a cancer cell it takes, it takes about 10 years 00:02:56.60\00:02:59.88 to develop these mechanisms. Right. 00:03:00.52\00:03:03.66 And then the cell will grow abnormally 00:03:03.69\00:03:07.58 and form tumors and then the erratic behavior 00:03:07.61\00:03:11.23 gets worse and the cell lose identity with the 00:03:11.26\00:03:14.86 local part that they are and try to invade, 00:03:14.89\00:03:18.27 go to the circulation and invade other tissues. 00:03:18.30\00:03:20.77 That something we want to avoid. 00:03:20.80\00:03:22.61 We wanna keep the cells from invading from 00:03:22.64\00:03:25.39 reproducing the necessarily from going, 00:03:25.42\00:03:27.74 where it doesn't need to go. What is, is their 00:03:27.77\00:03:30.59 anything new that we know about cancer? 00:03:30.62\00:03:31.98 Cancer has been around for a while, 00:03:32.01\00:03:33.44 so what are the some of the latest findings 00:03:33.47\00:03:35.36 or anything new that we can learn today. 00:03:35.39\00:03:37.77 I would like to start with the old about cancer. 00:03:38.75\00:03:42.29 Okay, fair enough, fair enough. 00:03:42.32\00:03:43.36 And then I have a special message here with this tie. 00:03:43.39\00:03:46.62 That smoking is a still the main cause of cancer. 00:03:47.21\00:03:50.63 Is smoking is related, so if can show 00:03:51.14\00:03:53.92 you a graphic on that you see that the smoking 00:03:53.95\00:03:57.46 is related to several different cancers 00:03:57.49\00:03:59.87 as you see in this picture. 00:03:59.90\00:04:01.52 And 30% of the cancers are caused by smoking is still 00:04:01.90\00:04:06.78 and the interesting part on the slide is that some of 00:04:06.81\00:04:12.13 the cancers are far away from the lungs 00:04:12.16\00:04:14.52 like Pancreas and Kidney and Bladder, 00:04:14.55\00:04:19.93 so those are organs that are not close 00:04:19.96\00:04:22.26 to the smoking, is smoke. 00:04:22.29\00:04:24.73 Where you would think it would be directly affected, 00:04:24.76\00:04:27.39 yes, yes, yes, where the smoke is going in right. 00:04:27.42\00:04:29.79 The Larynx, Esophagus, Lungs. 00:04:29.82\00:04:32.57 So, we are happy that in many countries 00:04:33.07\00:04:35.00 there is a very strong campaign against smoking. 00:04:35.03\00:04:37.91 Because this is still the major cause of 00:04:38.35\00:04:41.94 cancer and heart disease. 00:04:41.97\00:04:44.33 Right, so you share a little about the old and 00:04:44.99\00:04:47.43 about cancer still being the number one killer, 00:04:47.46\00:04:49.36 but you still I don't think have shared the 00:04:50.14\00:04:52.23 new part or any new parts that you may know? 00:04:52.26\00:04:54.69 Yeah the new part about cancer is 00:04:55.62\00:04:57.87 its relationship with the food. 00:04:57.90\00:05:01.24 It looks like the other 30% of cause of cancer 00:05:01.27\00:05:06.36 related to food. One side is the prevention and another 00:05:06.39\00:05:11.11 side is the excess calorie that we consume starting 00:05:11.14\00:05:16.44 when we are kids and then in the adult life too. 00:05:16.47\00:05:20.46 So, I can show you another slide, another graphic 00:05:21.18\00:05:26.07 that shows the relationship of obesity and cancer. 00:05:26.10\00:05:29.71 As you see in the graphic obesity is related 00:05:30.40\00:05:33.61 to a series of cancers like in the Esophagus, 00:05:33.64\00:05:36.58 Intestines, Gallbladder, Breast, Pancreas, 00:05:36.61\00:05:39.72 Uterus and Kidneys. 00:05:39.75\00:05:41.36 Dr. Dos Santos why, why this group of areas. 00:05:41.78\00:05:45.72 I can discuss when at a time like for instance 00:05:45.75\00:05:49.76 Esophagus cancer. The lower part of the esophagus 00:05:49.79\00:05:53.87 if receives acid from the stomach can be irritated 00:05:54.39\00:05:59.18 and then this increase the risk of cancer in that part 00:05:59.21\00:06:02.26 and this is caused because of too much fat in the 00:06:02.76\00:06:05.90 abdominal part that will pressure the stomach up 00:06:06.51\00:06:10.08 and then the esophagus will have this, 00:06:10.71\00:06:13.05 this incidence of cancer. Also obesity will increase 00:06:13.08\00:06:20.85 the production of estrogen and then will increase 00:06:20.88\00:06:24.14 the risk of cancerous female type of cancer like 00:06:24.17\00:06:28.37 breast and uterus and ovarian. 00:06:28.60\00:06:30.97 And then the third cause would be increase of insulin 00:06:31.00\00:06:35.10 and that's an interesting thing. 00:06:35.13\00:06:36.91 Because once you remember in metabolic syndrome 00:06:36.94\00:06:40.18 you have an increase production of insulin 00:06:40.21\00:06:42.94 and the insulin will cause lot of problem as an insulin 00:06:43.33\00:06:46.79 is a cancer promotion agent and will increase 00:06:46.82\00:06:50.38 one of the causes of this cancer is 00:06:51.06\00:06:53.49 because of high levels of insulin. 00:06:53.52\00:06:55.38 Very interesting, so keeping the fat off 00:06:55.41\00:06:59.89 is one of the best ways to decrease risk of cancer 00:06:59.92\00:07:03.87 in those specific areas we have been taking about. 00:07:03.90\00:07:06.37 Another topic on cancer or another area of cancer 00:07:07.65\00:07:10.61 is the fruits and vegetables. You know, 00:07:10.64\00:07:13.24 here five a day and those change periodically 00:07:13.27\00:07:15.96 to other names, but eating lots of fruits and vegetables 00:07:15.99\00:07:19.06 decreases the risk of cancer. 00:07:19.09\00:07:21.41 Some people say well by increasing calories through 00:07:22.02\00:07:24.46 fruits thus increasing my calories or 00:07:24.49\00:07:27.31 maybe gaining weight is this true? 00:07:27.34\00:07:29.59 Theoretically you are right. Some fruits have high 00:07:31.87\00:07:36.04 calorie content, but I don't believe that the epidemic 00:07:36.07\00:07:39.70 of obesity and overweight that we have around 00:07:39.73\00:07:42.37 is caused by excess of fruits. 00:07:42.40\00:07:45.31 Is cause by excess of something else 00:07:46.07\00:07:47.98 that you know high fat, high sugar? 00:07:48.01\00:07:50.20 Junk foods. Yeah, 00:07:50.23\00:07:51.75 that's a cause of this epidemic. 00:07:51.78\00:07:55.16 On the other hands, fruits are very protective 00:07:56.10\00:07:59.03 against cancer. We can see in the graphic 00:08:00.28\00:08:03.42 that several types of cancers can be protected 00:08:04.01\00:08:08.65 if you eat more fruits and you see in the graphic 00:08:09.39\00:08:13.93 that cancer of the mouth, larynx, pharynx, esophagus, 00:08:13.96\00:08:18.86 lungs, stomach, intestines, and prostate can be 00:08:18.89\00:08:22.59 prevented for just eating more fruits in your diet. 00:08:22.62\00:08:26.28 Right, so eating the fruits has more beneficial factors. 00:08:26.92\00:08:30.81 So, we should eat our fruits and eat our vegetables 00:08:30.84\00:08:33.90 because antioxidants they are actually low calorie 00:08:33.93\00:08:36.81 food items like. God created that we should enjoy 00:08:36.84\00:08:39.82 as much as possible and eating a lot of food, 00:08:39.85\00:08:43.53 a lot of fruits would be very filling 00:08:43.56\00:08:45.78 and that would be difficult to eat the quantities 00:08:45.81\00:08:48.48 of calories in fruit like we do with other high density 00:08:48.51\00:08:52.74 foods such as the sugary or the sweets or the fiber 00:08:52.77\00:08:55.94 type of fruits, foods I'm sorry. So, that's why some 00:08:55.97\00:09:00.18 people say well you can gain weight erratically 00:09:00.21\00:09:02.30 yeah like you said that's correct, but most likely 00:09:02.33\00:09:05.90 it's not that way. Next, I would like to share some 00:09:05.93\00:09:08.48 recommendations that are from the American Institute 00:09:08.51\00:09:11.54 of Cancer Research. The slide will show the 00:09:11.57\00:09:14.50 recommendations are given to decrease cancer. 00:09:14.53\00:09:16.81 Such as be as lean as possible. 00:09:17.19\00:09:18.90 Be active on daily basis. Limit consumption of foods 00:09:18.93\00:09:23.79 that are high in calorie. Avoid the sugary drinks, 00:09:23.82\00:09:27.04 which served as a fruit drinks lot of times 00:09:27.07\00:09:29.09 are very high in those. Eat foods of plant origin 00:09:29.12\00:09:32.69 those are natural grown from the earth or from the tress. 00:09:33.29\00:09:37.01 Limit intake of red meat or avoid altogether. 00:09:37.73\00:09:40.88 And limit alcohol drinks or avoid those altogether also. 00:09:41.35\00:09:44.40 So, these are some practical applications 00:09:45.34\00:09:47.76 that we can use daily to reduce that amount of, 00:09:47.79\00:09:52.79 the risk of cancer. What about exercise. 00:09:52.82\00:09:57.65 We have known that exercise has in the effect on 00:09:57.68\00:10:01.13 being healthy, but what about cancer. 00:10:01.71\00:10:03.43 The first think is that exercise indirectly effect 00:10:04.61\00:10:08.84 body fat and so decrease body fat and obesity 00:10:08.87\00:10:13.02 and this should be a mechanism to decrease 00:10:13.05\00:10:16.63 the cancer risk. But, there are some research on 00:10:16.66\00:10:19.70 exercise alone decreases insulin, 00:10:19.73\00:10:23.42 decrease testosterone that is related to 00:10:23.45\00:10:25.81 prostate cancer. Decrease estrogen related to female 00:10:25.84\00:10:29.40 cancers and also exercise produce antioxidants 00:10:29.43\00:10:34.49 like superoxide dismutase a substance that will prevent 00:10:34.52\00:10:38.84 a DNA to become cancer and cancerogenic. 00:10:38.87\00:10:42.32 So, you see in the graphic here the cancers 00:10:42.35\00:10:45.35 that are related to one of the cancer that are related 00:10:45.38\00:10:50.05 when a person does not do exercise. 00:10:50.08\00:10:52.31 So, exercise prevents like cancer in the breast, 00:10:52.76\00:10:55.41 ovary, uterus, pancreas, and lungs. 00:10:55.44\00:10:58.56 That's amazing how just exercising 00:10:59.53\00:11:01.14 and luck you mention at the beginning 00:11:01.17\00:11:02.86 and as was recommended by the Cancer Institute 00:11:03.87\00:11:06.85 being lean and using exercise to be lean 00:11:07.20\00:11:09.36 would be a great way to do that. 00:11:09.39\00:11:10.96 I also remember from the list of recommendations 00:11:11.31\00:11:13.80 that not consuming energy dense food in other words 00:11:13.83\00:11:17.65 commonly known as the high caloric foods in very small 00:11:17.68\00:11:21.59 packages, so very small amount of food with lot of 00:11:21.62\00:11:24.36 energy, a lot of calories that's referring to 00:11:24.39\00:11:28.16 sometimes those could be juices, fruit juices 00:11:28.65\00:11:31.32 because there is concentrated, 00:11:31.80\00:11:33.87 what are your thoughts concerning cancer 00:11:33.90\00:11:35.62 prevention and juices with has highly caloric intakes. 00:11:35.65\00:11:39.59 Well fruit juices itself I don't see any problem 00:11:40.68\00:11:47.35 with that because if it's fresh, but do so. 00:11:47.38\00:11:50.36 So, is almost the same as the fruit 00:11:50.39\00:11:52.94 with the fiber there. The only problem is that some 00:11:53.50\00:12:01.14 studies with children have shown that if children 00:12:01.17\00:12:06.07 substitute sugary foods, sugary drinks like sodas 00:12:06.10\00:12:10.96 and punches or drinks that are sugary for fruit juice 00:12:10.99\00:12:17.63 and they cannot control weight? 00:12:17.97\00:12:19.84 So, if we talk about weight we have to be careful 00:12:19.87\00:12:22.32 about too much fruit juices. 00:12:22.35\00:12:26.12 So, potentially the best recommendation 00:12:27.20\00:12:29.01 would be to use what is the five fruits and vegetables 00:12:29.04\00:12:31.65 a day. Use non-starchy ones or limit the starchy ones 00:12:31.68\00:12:35.54 the potatoes and those kind and also using 00:12:35.57\00:12:38.44 the whole grains, legumes, and using sometimes 00:12:38.47\00:12:43.08 we get tricked with the breads and we look at 00:12:43.11\00:12:44.71 the ingredients and says wheat flour, make sure 00:12:44.74\00:12:47.45 it says whole wheat flour and make sure 00:12:47.48\00:12:49.61 whole grain is there the way God made it all the parts 00:12:49.64\00:12:53.05 all the components, which are very healthy for us. 00:12:53.08\00:12:55.65 And these are related to cancer prevention correct? 00:12:56.63\00:12:59.19 Yes, it is good that you mentioned about 00:12:59.80\00:13:02.53 the amount of whole wheat flour 00:13:02.56\00:13:06.55 and I would go one step further and say that 00:13:06.58\00:13:09.43 you should check the amount of fiber in this 00:13:09.46\00:13:12.19 foods especially in bread when you see 1 gm of fiber 00:13:12.22\00:13:16.42 is nothing so this is refine bread. 00:13:16.96\00:13:21.40 Even the name I say whole bread or whole wheat bread, 00:13:22.09\00:13:25.31 1 gm of fiber is not whole wheat. 00:13:25.34\00:13:27.68 It should be at least three grams of fat per serving. 00:13:27.71\00:13:30.75 Right. And be careful that the serving is one slice. 00:13:30.78\00:13:33.70 Sometimes they put a serving of two slice 00:13:33.73\00:13:36.16 and then you have more fiber and that is no fiber that. 00:13:36.54\00:13:39.22 So, we have to make sure that the servings of fiber 00:13:40.29\00:13:43.09 are how many per slice or per serving is applied 00:13:43.12\00:13:46.38 the best way to say it. Now the fiber the only thing 00:13:46.41\00:13:49.30 we are looking for or how was that beneficial. 00:13:49.33\00:13:52.41 I see you have a display here. 00:13:52.70\00:13:54.69 Well, I just wanna say that these type of foods 00:13:56.93\00:14:02.30 that I recommend for cancer are not just 00:14:02.33\00:14:06.17 for the prevention of cancer and it helps to 00:14:06.20\00:14:09.77 prevent the series of disease. 00:14:09.80\00:14:11.82 Metabolic syndrome, diabetes, hypertension, 00:14:11.85\00:14:14.82 cancer as we see weight control and several other 00:14:16.13\00:14:20.34 diseases and I recommend to the patients up to the 00:14:20.37\00:14:24.38 public that they eat beans everyday. 00:14:24.41\00:14:27.59 And I do as much as possible to eat beans by the way 00:14:28.19\00:14:31.75 we eat a lot of beans today in the 00:14:31.78\00:14:35.05 restaurant here in a lunch time and 00:14:35.08\00:14:39.02 That's very delicious, very good. 00:14:39.05\00:14:40.96 There was a bean soup that was very delicious. 00:14:40.99\00:14:42.74 So, we know we are getting all the good benefits 00:14:43.89\00:14:45.96 from the beans for cancer for multiple diseases. 00:14:46.85\00:14:49.65 Now speaking on alcohol. Does alcohol cause cancer? 00:14:50.00\00:14:54.63 Yeah, I have the Bible of cancer here is a book from 00:14:55.36\00:15:00.10 the American Institute of Cancer Research 00:15:00.13\00:15:02.42 and they are a result of several specialists 00:15:02.73\00:15:06.79 on cancer around the world and lets read what they 00:15:06.82\00:15:11.10 mention about alcohol or ethanol. 00:15:11.13\00:15:14.29 In page 1:57 ethanol is calcified by the 00:15:14.32\00:15:18.69 international agency for cancer research 00:15:18.72\00:15:21.13 as a human carcinogen. So alcohol is a 00:15:21.43\00:15:24.93 cancer producing agent. 00:15:24.96\00:15:26.80 So, it's very clear there and so even when the 00:15:27.28\00:15:30.93 same bugs has limited quantities 00:15:30.96\00:15:32.63 we should cut all scientifically speaking 00:15:32.66\00:15:34.85 because they themselves say it does cause cancer correct? 00:15:34.88\00:15:38.72 Yes, I believe alcohol is a cancer agent 00:15:40.84\00:15:45.91 and if you see in the graphics 00:15:45.94\00:15:48.87 that we wanna show you alcohol is related to cancer 00:15:48.90\00:15:52.42 and them all. In the pharynx, larynx, 00:15:52.45\00:15:54.84 esophagus, intestines, breast and liver cancer. 00:15:55.25\00:15:59.73 Breast and liver cancer especially in women. 00:16:00.09\00:16:03.05 You see that alcohol is really related to cancer 00:16:04.26\00:16:08.27 and I would say and I believe that the alcohol 00:16:08.68\00:16:12.40 is a cancer producing agent. 00:16:12.43\00:16:14.62 Now does evidence show that any amount 00:16:15.57\00:16:17.54 of alcohol is harmful. 00:16:17.57\00:16:19.79 Now it looks like there is no amount especially for 00:16:21.21\00:16:24.77 breast cancer, so if woman has started drinking one 00:16:24.80\00:16:28.52 dose or two dose of alcohol, one dose being small liquid 00:16:28.61\00:16:34.47 or a small cup of liquid or a cup of wine or a beer 00:16:34.50\00:16:39.10 they increase the risk of breast cancer. 00:16:39.13\00:16:41.57 You can see in the slide the recommendation 00:16:41.60\00:16:45.07 that the book, they can say Bible says about cancer. 00:16:45.69\00:16:51.11 It says that evidence does not show a clear level of 00:16:51.65\00:16:55.28 consumption of alcoholic drinks below which there is 00:16:55.31\00:16:58.74 no increase in risk of the cancers and its causes. 00:16:58.77\00:17:02.82 This means that based solely on the evidence 00:17:03.64\00:17:06.21 of cancer, even the small amounts of 00:17:06.80\00:17:08.12 alcoholic drinks should be avoided. 00:17:08.15\00:17:10.37 Reminds me of Proverbs 21, 00:17:11.16\00:17:12.49 where it says wine is a marker, 00:17:12.52\00:17:14.11 so any, any amount of alcohol has been shown 00:17:14.14\00:17:18.13 is harmful to the body. So, we moderately well 00:17:18.16\00:17:21.34 abstain from it, stay away from it, 00:17:21.37\00:17:23.35 knowing that it is harmful when dealing with cancer 00:17:23.81\00:17:27.16 and with the body. Now we know we've talked about 00:17:27.19\00:17:31.07 several ways of preventing several with the exercise 00:17:31.10\00:17:34.35 and the diet and now abstaining from alcohol. 00:17:34.38\00:17:37.03 But, we would like to know what if, how can I check 00:17:37.71\00:17:40.54 if I do have cancer a little bits of cancer 00:17:40.57\00:17:42.49 too attacked as soon as possible or deal with it 00:17:42.52\00:17:46.10 medically as soon as possible, 00:17:46.13\00:17:48.68 which we know would be the best way to do it. 00:17:48.71\00:17:50.15 Are there any kind of indications that 00:17:50.18\00:17:52.64 we could have to deal with that. 00:17:52.67\00:17:54.59 Well it's a tradition in the medical field 00:17:55.54\00:18:00.27 that the best treatment for cancer is early treatment 00:18:00.30\00:18:05.10 and early detection of it. So, they are some cancers 00:18:06.17\00:18:10.08 that you can have some markers related to that, 00:18:10.11\00:18:15.10 but I go first, I will go before that. 00:18:15.13\00:18:17.89 The first thing you have to do is to check 00:18:17.92\00:18:20.65 your family history, to see if you have any cancer 00:18:20.68\00:18:25.74 in the family like if you have a prostate cancer 00:18:25.77\00:18:31.17 for us that may or so. 00:18:31.20\00:18:34.03 The father and grandfather. 00:18:34.06\00:18:35.41 And it is interesting, but you should check if your 00:18:35.44\00:18:39.35 mother have breast cancer then you might have 00:18:39.38\00:18:42.20 high risk of prostate cancer if you are a man, 00:18:42.23\00:18:45.61 if you are women you check if your mother have had 00:18:45.64\00:18:50.03 breast cancer or ovary cancer 00:18:50.06\00:18:52.25 and your father has had a prostate cancer. 00:18:52.28\00:18:55.93 So, all of these are related to hormones 00:18:55.96\00:18:59.41 that might increase your risk. So, first check your 00:18:59.44\00:19:02.87 family history. Second there are some markers, 00:19:02.90\00:19:06.68 so when you have a risk of some of diseases or 00:19:06.71\00:19:10.87 some of this cancer you can ask your physician 00:19:10.90\00:19:13.48 if he can somehow check for this markers like 00:19:13.51\00:19:21.01 if you have prostate risk, so there is a PSA 00:19:21.04\00:19:24.55 that is everybody knows about that and we advise 00:19:24.58\00:19:28.73 that or the authorities advise 00:19:28.76\00:19:31.05 that after 50 years old everybody should know 00:19:31.08\00:19:34.68 the PSA level. And then for women they have now 00:19:34.71\00:19:39.23 one or two markers for breast cancer. 00:19:40.37\00:19:44.72 And is very common that a lady will check her 00:19:45.05\00:19:50.24 family history and figure it out that they have some 00:19:50.27\00:19:54.13 breast cancer in the family then the second step 00:19:54.16\00:19:56.97 would be check for BRCA or BRCA 1 or 2. 00:19:57.00\00:20:01.83 And those are the markers that they have 00:20:01.86\00:20:04.29 they the physicians use to prevent or to detect a risk 00:20:04.32\00:20:09.35 or even a cancer that might be starting earlier. 00:20:09.75\00:20:15.18 So, very fortunate to have science tell us 00:20:16.04\00:20:20.09 or give us those indications. 00:20:20.12\00:20:21.48 So, we can deal with that and number one cancer 00:20:22.00\00:20:24.69 for women is breast cancer and number one for men 00:20:24.72\00:20:27.72 prostate cancer. So, these are probably two 00:20:27.75\00:20:29.77 that as we aged, we should be checking on to make sure 00:20:29.80\00:20:34.93 we don't have those meat. It's a thing that we know 00:20:34.96\00:20:40.59 that science and the Bible are very clear about 00:20:40.62\00:20:44.45 certain meats and even science and 00:20:44.48\00:20:47.38 more and more says meat is harmful. 00:20:47.41\00:20:49.16 Meat has lot of fat, lot of saturated fat, 00:20:49.19\00:20:51.92 it's contaminated with antibiotics 00:20:51.95\00:20:55.52 or different factors that are harmful what does 00:20:55.55\00:20:59.31 cancer and meat have any association. 00:20:59.34\00:21:01.27 Well, I would say that 100% we know that meat 00:21:01.98\00:21:05.52 is related to colon cancer or intestines. 00:21:05.55\00:21:09.63 Cancers in the digestive system is specific 00:21:10.49\00:21:15.16 in the colon. So, what we advise again we have 00:21:15.19\00:21:20.34 recommendations for that and in the book they say that 00:21:20.37\00:21:24.15 a person should not eat more than 300 or 500 grams 00:21:24.18\00:21:30.06 of meat per week specially red meat that means 00:21:30.09\00:21:34.55 11 to 18 ounces of meat per week, 8 ounces 00:21:34.58\00:21:39.64 and I can remember that myself in the past 00:21:39.67\00:21:43.49 I used to eat that in one day 00:21:43.52\00:21:45.49 and many people still use this 300 grams of meat 00:21:45.52\00:21:50.73 per day and that's one thing that 00:21:50.76\00:21:52.91 we have to slow down on meat. 00:21:52.94\00:21:54.98 Or else you have done altogether live it behind 00:21:55.71\00:21:58.74 and know that there is a risk with it 00:21:58.77\00:22:00.82 and not deal with it in fact knowing that, 00:22:00.85\00:22:03.52 That's better. Yeah exactly, 00:22:03.55\00:22:04.94 it's almost like driving a car and knowing that 00:22:04.97\00:22:06.98 if I drive fast there is a higher chance that 00:22:07.89\00:22:10.09 if I do get into an accident the injuries 00:22:10.12\00:22:12.65 will be greater and the damage will be greater. 00:22:12.68\00:22:14.72 Now with our diet is too, how we feed our body you know 00:22:14.75\00:22:17.30 if you know certain things we will put us in danger 00:22:17.33\00:22:19.74 or higher risk or I even deal with it if I put it 00:22:19.77\00:22:22.63 aside get rid of it altogether. 00:22:22.66\00:22:24.96 What are some other recommendations 00:22:26.61\00:22:27.87 that you would have as far as diet 00:22:27.90\00:22:29.66 or to deal with cancer? 00:22:29.69\00:22:31.78 I think there is another important factor 00:22:32.49\00:22:35.12 that is the relationship with biologic 00:22:35.15\00:22:37.69 agents like virus. So, you see that there are some 00:22:37.72\00:22:42.16 types of cancer that are related to virus. 00:22:42.19\00:22:45.06 And then one is the esophagus cancer related 00:22:45.09\00:22:47.85 to Epstein-Barr virus. Okay. So, a person should check 00:22:47.88\00:22:51.80 if the person has the Epstein-Barr virus for that. 00:22:51.83\00:22:55.86 And the most acknowledged or most common is the HPV 00:22:56.52\00:23:02.08 or Human Papillomavirus that is related to cancer 00:23:02.11\00:23:07.21 for the cervical cancer in women. 00:23:07.24\00:23:11.78 So, this is the one that they develop an immunization 00:23:12.38\00:23:15.38 against a vaccine, okay. Especially for girls between 00:23:15.41\00:23:20.86 13 to 26 years old they advise this immunization. 00:23:20.89\00:23:26.89 Even though this cancer is consider a cancer 00:23:27.91\00:23:31.55 transmitted by sexual intercourse 00:23:31.58\00:23:35.61 or related to woman that have a lot of partners 00:23:36.09\00:23:42.20 and then they can be transmitted this virus 00:23:42.67\00:23:45.81 the Human Papillomavirus and increase 00:23:45.84\00:23:48.34 the risk of this type of cancer. 00:23:48.37\00:23:50.55 Alright, now there is another one that 00:23:50.58\00:23:53.04 maybe effect people in the southern zones or places, 00:23:53.07\00:23:56.21 where the sun hits very hard 00:23:56.24\00:23:58.39 and that's skin cancer correct? 00:23:58.42\00:23:59.83 How often should we use some blocker, 00:24:01.61\00:24:03.75 some protection from to protect ourselves from that. 00:24:03.78\00:24:06.33 Every time we go got or after certain amounts of day 00:24:06.36\00:24:09.44 time or other certain places 00:24:09.47\00:24:12.50 what's your recommendation on that. 00:24:12.53\00:24:13.99 That's a good question because we are talking about 00:24:14.02\00:24:17.12 prevention of cancer and then the skin cancer. 00:24:18.17\00:24:21.69 Mostly I would say the skin cancer 00:24:22.40\00:24:24.33 is in the inferior lab, inferior lip 00:24:24.36\00:24:27.86 and then in the nose, in the doors of the nose, 00:24:27.89\00:24:31.40 in the front and in the chin here, 00:24:31.43\00:24:35.07 and then in the upper part of the ear. 00:24:35.10\00:24:37.45 So, this the main areas that we can have skin cancer 00:24:37.48\00:24:43.60 specially a person that has light color skin. 00:24:43.63\00:24:49.48 So, kind of a hat will help on that, 00:24:50.07\00:24:52.97 but you could use the some block that should be effect 00:24:53.00\00:24:57.39 or some protector factor like SPF 30 or higher. 00:24:57.42\00:25:02.67 Correct. The problem is that if you block totally sun 00:25:02.70\00:25:06.63 you decrease the absorption of vitamin D 00:25:07.13\00:25:09.64 and vitamin D on the other hand is one important 00:25:10.01\00:25:13.23 antioxidant that prevents cancer and some researchers 00:25:13.26\00:25:17.63 are fighting now and they are saying that 00:25:17.66\00:25:19.73 you better have more sun. You will have less cancer 00:25:19.76\00:25:23.20 then the cancer that are produced by UV rays. 00:25:23.57\00:25:26.16 So, my advise is that leave more sun in the upper 00:25:26.63\00:25:31.74 extremities in the arms and the legs, 00:25:31.77\00:25:33.68 protect your face and avoid the period of sun 00:25:33.71\00:25:37.34 that is more intense like around 12 that should be 00:25:37.37\00:25:43.78 between 9 in California that I'm from California 00:25:43.81\00:25:48.47 9'o clock the sun is already too strong, 00:25:48.50\00:25:50.95 9 to 3 or 9 to 4 and have the sun. 00:25:50.98\00:25:54.63 Avoid the sun. Avoid that at time. 00:25:54.66\00:25:56.99 And one specific thing is that avoid burning the skin. 00:25:57.02\00:26:01.16 So, if you burn the skin you have this reddish skin 00:26:01.19\00:26:04.22 then you are in trouble because these is the one 00:26:04.25\00:26:07.59 when you have the UV ultraviolet rays 00:26:08.25\00:26:11.75 that will cause mutation in the skin cells. 00:26:11.78\00:26:15.66 Okay, okay, so we want to avoid the burning altogether. 00:26:15.69\00:26:18.88 Once again we deal with the topic of balance were God 00:26:19.32\00:26:22.89 made sunshine to be healthy for us for bones, 00:26:22.92\00:26:25.29 for vitamin D, we need it by moderation 00:26:25.32\00:26:29.60 and the right times of day and to protect ourselves 00:26:29.63\00:26:32.22 from the worst time like you said from the middle 00:26:32.25\00:26:35.34 of the day time, then wear hat, wear some block, 00:26:35.37\00:26:37.76 wear long sleeves at that time 00:26:37.79\00:26:39.64 if there is gonna be multiple exposure. 00:26:39.67\00:26:41.82 I know that cancer once again can hit 00:26:42.39\00:26:44.84 so many places from the surface of the skin 00:26:44.87\00:26:47.52 to inside our body to even inside our bones 00:26:47.55\00:26:51.28 and we want to make sure that we avoid all those 00:26:52.29\00:26:54.86 we know what the risk levels are also knowing 00:26:54.89\00:26:57.74 that foods right have protection against it. 00:26:57.77\00:27:01.88 And even certain drinks may have protection 00:27:01.91\00:27:04.54 against cancer right? 00:27:04.57\00:27:05.69 Yes, I have a drink for us here that is not alcohol, 00:27:06.27\00:27:09.35 is a grape juice and has a lot of antioxidants. 00:27:10.15\00:27:14.54 Perfect. So, this is very good 00:27:14.57\00:27:16.71 for the prevention of cancer. 00:27:16.74\00:27:18.10 We wanna prevent for sure.
