Good, we are gonna be talking 00:00:46.06\00:00:49.04 about the Immune System today which 00:00:49.07\00:00:50.77 I find intensely interesting. 00:00:50.80\00:00:52.87 It's a system that I don't know a lot about, 00:00:52.90\00:00:56.45 but I understand it works really hard to keep me 00:00:56.48\00:00:59.99 and all of our viewers healthy. Absolutely, 00:01:00.02\00:01:03.69 so help me understand how it works? 00:01:03.72\00:01:05.72 The Immune System is a very complex 00:01:05.75\00:01:09.63 and interesting system. I suppose the easiest way 00:01:09.66\00:01:14.36 to understand it is to think of your 00:01:14.39\00:01:16.94 Immune System as you are military. 00:01:16.97\00:01:19.94 As in the military, there are various branches 00:01:19.97\00:01:23.86 of your Immune System. You have the Command Center 00:01:23.89\00:01:28.65 that would be a specialized type of lymphocyte 00:01:28.68\00:01:33.58 called the T lymphocytes. You have the infantry 00:01:33.61\00:01:39.31 if you will. The ground forces called them 00:01:39.34\00:01:43.00 what you will those would be the phagocytes. 00:01:43.03\00:01:46.22 Phago means to eat, cyte means cell. 00:01:46.25\00:01:49.76 Those are the cell eaters or actually the cells 00:01:49.79\00:01:52.46 which eat neutrophils and macrophages. 00:01:52.49\00:01:55.66 Then you have B cells. They are type of lymphocyte 00:01:55.69\00:01:59.73 as well and they work under the direction 00:01:59.76\00:02:04.12 of the T cells and they manufacture antibodies. 00:02:04.15\00:02:08.05 Antibodies are very interesting compounds. 00:02:08.08\00:02:11.68 They have two arms and they have 00:02:11.71\00:02:15.23 if you will hands. These hands are very specialized. 00:02:15.26\00:02:19.22 They are particularly designed to identify one 00:02:19.25\00:02:25.21 and only one invader in from that would be coming 00:02:25.24\00:02:30.37 into your body. Let's say that someone comes 00:02:30.40\00:02:35.79 or a bacteria comes and tries to get into 00:02:35.82\00:02:38.76 your body. If your body has been exposed to that 00:02:38.79\00:02:42.56 before and made antibodies to that bacteria. 00:02:42.59\00:02:46.82 Once that bacteria is picked up by a macrophage, 00:02:47.74\00:02:51.06 which is really the macrophages or eaters, 00:02:51.09\00:02:54.47 but they are also border patrol. 00:02:54.50\00:02:57.42 The macrophages are found under our skin, 00:02:57.45\00:03:00.55 they are also found along the blood vessels 00:03:00.58\00:03:03.33 when they are inside the blood itself, 00:03:03.36\00:03:05.49 we give them a different name, 00:03:05.52\00:03:07.26 we call them monocytes, but they do the same thing. 00:03:07.29\00:03:10.32 They pick up these invaders, 00:03:10.35\00:03:13.14 these not you if you will. Bacteria, viruses, 00:03:13.17\00:03:18.16 pollen on occasion they take it in their hand 00:03:18.19\00:03:21.94 and present it to a T cell for identification 00:03:21.97\00:03:26.06 unless it's been there before. If it's been there 00:03:26.09\00:03:30.91 before the body recognize it almost instantly 00:03:30.94\00:03:34.37 and the B cells start turning out millions 00:03:34.40\00:03:39.55 and millions of antibodies. A B cell, one B cell 00:03:39.58\00:03:43.90 can make as many as ten million antibodies 00:03:43.93\00:03:46.97 in an hour. Wow. That flood into your system 00:03:47.00\00:03:50.57 any of those foreign invaders are tagged 00:03:50.60\00:03:54.96 as soon as the antibody latches on to them 00:03:54.99\00:03:58.10 they are marked for death. The antibody attaches 00:03:59.31\00:04:04.50 that marks them as an invader and then the host 00:04:04.53\00:04:06.91 of phagocytes come out and chew, chew, chew 00:04:06.94\00:04:10.34 and eat them up and destroy them. 00:04:10.37\00:04:13.70 Actually, they pull them inside and dissolve them 00:04:13.73\00:04:18.18 inside the macrophage or the neutrophil primarily. 00:04:18.21\00:04:23.44 It's a very interesting system. 00:04:23.47\00:04:26.03 It's important for the system to be able to tell 00:04:26.06\00:04:29.63 the difference between what you and what's not you 00:04:29.66\00:04:33.43 and in the not you category to tell the difference 00:04:33.46\00:04:37.63 between what's a danger and what's not a danger. 00:04:37.66\00:04:42.30 Of course, there are many things that find their way 00:04:42.33\00:04:45.93 inside that aren't danger like dust particles. 00:04:45.96\00:04:50.74 They are not a danger, but sometimes the immune system 00:04:50.77\00:04:54.82 gets a little bit confused and mounts a reaction 00:04:54.85\00:04:59.25 to that we call that allergies. 00:04:59.28\00:05:01.44 Allergies are really the immune system 00:05:01.47\00:05:04.36 on hyper alert and a little confused as to what is you 00:05:04.39\00:05:10.82 and not you and in that not you category 00:05:10.85\00:05:14.26 what's dangerous and not dangerous. 00:05:14.29\00:05:17.02 So it sounds like this is a pretty complex system, 00:05:17.05\00:05:21.37 but its one that is in very, very, very important 00:05:21.40\00:05:24.41 to keep me safe and to keep me well? 00:05:24.44\00:05:27.00 Absolutely you know Sheryl if you don't have 00:05:27.03\00:05:29.42 an immune system. If you are born without one, 00:05:29.45\00:05:32.74 you don't live long, even if you are in total 00:05:32.77\00:05:36.53 isolation from any bacteria or viral particles 00:05:36.56\00:05:41.16 and fungus or any other pathogens as we call them. 00:05:41.19\00:05:45.35 Even if you are in total isolation from those 00:05:45.38\00:05:48.35 you still have cancer and cancer is almost 00:05:48.38\00:05:52.41 you in fact it was you, but it has changed 00:05:52.44\00:05:56.26 and become something that is not good for you 00:05:56.29\00:05:59.16 and the immune system needs to identify that too. 00:05:59.19\00:06:03.12 Interesting, so how does the immune system 00:06:03.15\00:06:07.56 try to keep me free of cancer? 00:06:07.59\00:06:10.36 The immune system has specialized cells 00:06:10.39\00:06:14.46 that look throughout your body, 00:06:14.49\00:06:16.78 looking for aberrations in the coding of the cell, 00:06:16.81\00:06:21.19 the cell wall because when you have the mutation 00:06:21.22\00:06:24.21 inside the cell often you have a mutation outside 00:06:24.24\00:06:28.27 the cell as well. When you are small, 00:06:28.30\00:06:31.39 your body has to get to know you and it does 00:06:31.42\00:06:35.40 that primarily through the T Cells. 00:06:35.43\00:06:37.75 T Cells are lymphocytes that come 00:06:37.78\00:06:40.41 from the bone marrow and go to the thymus gland, 00:06:40.44\00:06:43.79 which is right here low in your neck 00:06:43.82\00:06:46.07 high in your chest and there they are instructed. 00:06:46.10\00:06:50.20 God knows how, we don't understand it completely 00:06:50.23\00:06:55.16 in what is you and what is not you 00:06:55.19\00:06:57.96 and for the rest of their lives which T cells 00:06:57.99\00:07:01.85 are very long life. They help us detect what's you, 00:07:01.88\00:07:06.29 what's not you, what's cancerous 00:07:06.32\00:07:09.37 and what's not cancerous, but if the immune system 00:07:09.40\00:07:12.85 gets depressed by anything and they loose 00:07:12.88\00:07:17.30 that sharp ability to detect the cells 00:07:17.33\00:07:21.20 in your bodies that have changed 00:07:21.23\00:07:23.68 or if on the other hand more and more cancer cells 00:07:23.71\00:07:27.71 are produced and they are overwhelmed 00:07:27.74\00:07:30.07 in their ability to identify the cancer cells 00:07:30.10\00:07:33.98 then we are at increased risk for cancer. 00:07:34.01\00:07:36.58 So whatever you are saying is that, 00:07:36.61\00:07:39.89 we are all exposed to cancer cells 00:07:39.92\00:07:43.44 on a fairly regular basis and something happens 00:07:43.47\00:07:47.79 that causes these cells to not be identified 00:07:47.82\00:07:51.11 by the immune system or to not work well? 00:07:51.14\00:07:53.71 That's correct they estimate that each of us 00:07:53.74\00:07:56.42 has a cell or two or three as many some people think 00:07:56.45\00:08:01.61 as six or more incidences per day of cells developing 00:08:01.64\00:08:06.80 a mutation and becoming potentially cancerous. 00:08:06.83\00:08:10.52 Fortunately our immune system gets the 00:08:10.55\00:08:14.77 majority of those and destroys them before 00:08:14.80\00:08:18.15 they can become a problem for us. 00:08:18.18\00:08:20.18 We are incredibly well made, well designed 00:08:20.21\00:08:24.07 and despite the multiple problems our immune system 00:08:24.10\00:08:29.49 can go in there, destroy the cell that's changed 00:08:29.52\00:08:33.51 and we keep living very well for many years. 00:08:33.54\00:08:36.70 Okay I now have a very strong respect 00:08:37.58\00:08:40.14 for my immune system. What can I do to strengthen it 00:08:40.17\00:08:44.32 or to make sure it stays healthy? 00:08:44.35\00:08:46.51 You know we talk a lot about diet 00:08:46.54\00:08:49.16 and diet is important, but let's start with an article 00:08:49.19\00:08:54.06 that was published in the summer issue 00:08:54.09\00:08:57.28 of Journal Advancement in Medicine in 1995, 00:08:57.31\00:09:00.81 a very interesting article. In this study, 00:09:00.84\00:09:05.12 they took a group of people and they wanted to test 00:09:05.15\00:09:09.50 their immune system function specifically 00:09:09.53\00:09:12.91 they wanted to look at an antibody called IgA. 00:09:12.94\00:09:16.68 IgA that they measured was found in the saliva, 00:09:16.71\00:09:20.63 but IgA is also found in the nasal secretions. 00:09:20.66\00:09:24.82 It's found in the tears of the tear ducts. 00:09:24.85\00:09:27.87 It's found in the alimentary canal 00:09:27.90\00:09:31.44 or in the GI tract, it's found under the skin. 00:09:31.47\00:09:34.81 In essence IgA is the first line of defense 00:09:34.84\00:09:38.38 against infection, so it's very, very important. 00:09:38.41\00:09:42.27 They took these people and they said to them, 00:09:42.30\00:09:45.33 we want you to think back to a time in your life 00:09:45.36\00:09:48.81 when you felt very distressed, 00:09:48.84\00:09:51.98 when you felt unloved, when you felt hurt, 00:09:52.01\00:09:56.31 someone had done something terrible to you 00:09:56.34\00:09:59.46 and it was just a very bad time in your life. 00:09:59.49\00:10:03.09 Now Sheryl I don't want you to think about a time 00:10:03.12\00:10:06.70 like that and you will see why shortly. 00:10:06.73\00:10:09.68 They measure their salivary IgA levels before this, 00:10:09.71\00:10:13.77 then they had them concentrate really get 00:10:13.80\00:10:16.12 into relieving that bad experience 00:10:16.15\00:10:18.25 for just five minutes, after five minutes 00:10:18.28\00:10:21.91 they measure their salivary IgA levels 00:10:21.94\00:10:24.35 and they found that within 15 minutes of that 00:10:24.38\00:10:27.75 five minute time when they thought back to that 00:10:27.78\00:10:30.73 bitter bad time in their life their salivary 00:10:30.76\00:10:33.90 IgA levels fell by 70 percent. Wow, 00:10:33.93\00:10:38.10 and did not return to baseline for five hours. 00:10:38.13\00:10:41.97 It's very important what you think about? 00:10:42.00\00:10:45.15 A Merry Heart Doeth Good Like a Medicine. 00:10:45.18\00:10:47.32 A Merry Heart Doeth Good Like a Medicine, you know, 00:10:47.35\00:10:49.62 they took the same group of people. 00:10:49.65\00:10:51.48 Fortunately, they didn't end with that study alone, 00:10:51.51\00:10:55.41 they took the same group of people and they said now 00:10:55.44\00:10:57.73 we want you to think back to a time in your life 00:10:57.76\00:11:00.03 when you felt really loved and it was just 00:11:00.06\00:11:03.02 a wonderful time. It was, you felt accepted 00:11:03.05\00:11:06.29 and it was just the best. Get into those feelings 00:11:06.32\00:11:11.22 for five minutes and relive that experience 00:11:11.25\00:11:14.63 and they found that their salivary IgA level 00:11:14.66\00:11:18.11 of the people that thought back to a time 00:11:18.14\00:11:20.38 like that in their lives went up by 80 percent 00:11:20.41\00:11:23.86 and didn't return to normal for five hours. 00:11:23.89\00:11:27.83 Now there are several very important things 00:11:27.86\00:11:30.00 in the study. One is of course its careful; 00:11:30.03\00:11:33.07 we need to be careful what we think about. 00:11:33.10\00:11:35.19 We need to chose our thoughts carefully 00:11:35.22\00:11:38.70 and the memories we have we need to be careful 00:11:38.73\00:11:42.65 that we don't take time reviewing all the bad stuff 00:11:42.68\00:11:47.09 in our life, now maybe some of you never 00:11:47.12\00:11:49.49 had a bad happening that's wonderful. 00:11:49.52\00:11:51.62 I have a few things its important for me 00:11:51.65\00:11:53.94 not to think about in my life because 00:11:53.97\00:11:56.02 I want my immune system healthy, 00:11:56.05\00:11:57.82 but the other interesting thing about the study 00:11:57.85\00:12:00.78 is it points out that every single while blood cell 00:12:00.81\00:12:06.07 has neurochemical receptors on it. 00:12:06.10\00:12:09.44 Every white cell is under the direct control 00:12:09.47\00:12:14.07 of our minds. As the Bible says as a man 00:12:14.10\00:12:19.10 think of in his heart so is he we could add as you 00:12:19.13\00:12:24.66 think in your heart or as you think 00:12:24.69\00:12:27.37 so is your immune system very, very important 00:12:27.40\00:12:32.10 and we find that many people come down 00:12:32.13\00:12:35.10 with cancer not just because of exposure, 00:12:35.13\00:12:38.84 but after a stressful time in their life, 00:12:38.87\00:12:41.89 when they instead of dealing with it 00:12:41.92\00:12:46.17 and moving on and concentrating 00:12:46.20\00:12:48.71 on the better things of life focused 00:12:48.74\00:12:51.44 on the negative. Their immune system 00:12:51.47\00:12:54.07 was depressed and cancer escaped surveillance 00:12:54.10\00:12:58.81 and grew very, very important for us 00:12:58.84\00:13:02.48 to be careful what we think about for our immune system 00:13:02.51\00:13:07.03 strength and health very important. 00:13:07.06\00:13:11.64 So there really is a connection then between 00:13:11.67\00:13:15.14 the mind and our body. I know we say this, 00:13:15.17\00:13:18.03 but there are very tangible connections there. 00:13:18.06\00:13:21.27 There are very close links between our mind 00:13:21.30\00:13:24.79 and our body. Sometimes we forget this, 00:13:24.82\00:13:27.67 but it's important that connection 00:13:27.70\00:13:31.69 is almost instantaneous. You think about 00:13:31.72\00:13:35.04 what happened, it's the B cells that were making 00:13:35.07\00:13:37.99 those antibodies. They got the signal from the brain 00:13:38.02\00:13:42.22 bad time, oh painful time and the B cells 00:13:42.25\00:13:48.56 stop making IgA. The IgA levels fell on the route 00:13:48.59\00:13:54.28 second experiment the B cells got the message 00:13:54.31\00:13:57.74 from the brain good times, wonderful times 00:13:57.77\00:14:01.74 and they started producing IgA and made lots more. 00:14:01.77\00:14:06.05 It reminds me of that wonderful chapter 00:14:06.08\00:14:10.86 in Ministry of Healing Mind Cure. 00:14:10.89\00:14:13.38 In that chapter Ellen White makes the statement, 00:14:13.41\00:14:17.34 nothing tends more to promote health of body 00:14:17.37\00:14:23.09 and soul than does a spirit of gratitude and praise. 00:14:23.12\00:14:28.28 You know, I used to need faith to believe 00:14:28.31\00:14:32.49 in that book Ministry of Healing. 00:14:32.52\00:14:34.40 I don't really need faith anymore 00:14:34.43\00:14:37.00 because I have science that shows me page after page 00:14:37.03\00:14:41.97 then what that book says is true today. Absolutely. 00:14:42.00\00:14:46.78 And that study shows it, but it's good for us 00:14:46.81\00:14:49.61 to remember if you wanna be healthy, 00:14:49.64\00:14:52.42 if you want to have a healthy vigorous 00:14:52.45\00:14:55.34 immune system think positively, 00:14:55.37\00:14:58.67 change the very cells in your body 00:14:58.70\00:15:03.19 with your thoughts. And I appreciated you bringing up 00:15:03.22\00:15:07.04 the Ministry of Healing for any of our viewers 00:15:07.07\00:15:09.58 who have not have the pleasure of reading 00:15:09.61\00:15:11.89 that book I highly recommend it. 00:15:11.92\00:15:14.31 I find it absolutely fascinating that it was 00:15:14.34\00:15:17.17 written more then a 100 years ago 00:15:17.20\00:15:18.63 and science is just now validating everything 00:15:18.66\00:15:21.46 that's in there, so very good information. 00:15:21.49\00:15:23.90 I recently had a family member who was diagnosed 00:15:23.93\00:15:27.62 with breast cancer and so this whole cancer 00:15:27.65\00:15:30.44 conversation is very interesting to me. 00:15:30.47\00:15:33.54 Tell me a little bit about breast cancer and maybe 00:15:33.57\00:15:37.53 how the immune system works with that? 00:15:37.56\00:15:39.85 Well Sheryl let's take a moment and step away 00:15:40.71\00:15:43.05 from the immune system and look at population 00:15:43.08\00:15:46.06 studies on breast cancer. Anyone with cancer 00:15:46.09\00:15:50.48 of course we want to have a vigorous immune system 00:15:50.51\00:15:53.67 even if you have been diagnosed with it, 00:15:53.70\00:15:56.11 if you take steps to improve your immune system 00:15:56.14\00:15:59.80 function with diet, with exercise, 00:15:59.83\00:16:02.40 with careful thoughts, you will improve your chance 00:16:02.43\00:16:05.76 of survival, if you don't have cancer 00:16:05.79\00:16:08.14 you will improve your risk or decrease 00:16:08.17\00:16:12.09 your risk to get cancer, but let's step away 00:16:12.12\00:16:14.98 from that for a moment and look a little more at diet 00:16:15.01\00:16:18.10 and what it does because it influences the rate 00:16:18.13\00:16:23.53 at which those cells become cancerous and of course 00:16:23.56\00:16:27.45 if you have a military in your body 00:16:27.48\00:16:31.10 the immune system and the world is at peace, 00:16:31.13\00:16:34.73 your immune system can rest. But even if you have 00:16:34.76\00:16:40.74 the best immune system in the world 00:16:40.77\00:16:42.73 they are going to be some casualties 00:16:42.76\00:16:45.12 if there is war broken out, so what can we do 00:16:45.15\00:16:47.94 to reduce the chance of a breakout of cancer 00:16:47.97\00:16:52.41 or if you will a conflict erupting in our body. 00:16:52.44\00:16:56.33 Let's look at that for a moment and look at it 00:16:56.36\00:16:59.04 with breast cancer. Breast cancer is very closely 00:16:59.07\00:17:04.86 linked to estrogen levels. Now, we know this 00:17:04.89\00:17:09.08 because men have breasts as well. 00:17:09.11\00:17:11.35 They are just not developed. The reason 00:17:11.38\00:17:14.13 they are not developed of course is because 00:17:14.16\00:17:16.36 men don't have the same level of estrogen 00:17:16.39\00:17:19.79 that women do and men have a 100 times less risk 00:17:19.82\00:17:23.67 of developing breast cancer than women. 00:17:23.70\00:17:26.35 In the last 20 years, I have diagnosed two men 00:17:26.38\00:17:30.17 with breast cancer, but many more women 00:17:30.20\00:17:33.47 unfortunately. Why is it of course that some women 00:17:33.50\00:17:38.23 get breast cancer and others don't? 00:17:38.26\00:17:40.43 We hear a lot about genetics today. 00:17:40.46\00:17:43.07 There is the BRCA that stands for 00:17:43.10\00:17:45.87 breast cancer gene. There is a BRCA 1 00:17:45.90\00:17:49.47 and the BRCA 2 genes and those are very important 00:17:49.50\00:17:54.23 if you have one of those genetic abnormalities 00:17:54.26\00:17:57.64 you have a 50 percent risk plus or minus in getting 00:17:57.67\00:18:01.82 breast cancer and some people say 00:18:01.85\00:18:04.21 well breast cancer is all in the genes not really. 00:18:04.24\00:18:08.42 In fact only about two to three percent 00:18:08.45\00:18:12.93 of all cancer, breast cancer included is genetic. 00:18:12.96\00:18:16.60 The BRCA gene occurs only in one in 500 women 00:18:16.63\00:18:22.34 another question to ask with that is why 00:18:22.37\00:18:25.50 do only 50 percent of people with the BRCA gene 00:18:25.53\00:18:30.65 get cancer. What about the 50 percent 00:18:30.68\00:18:34.31 that don't? What are they doing in their lives 00:18:34.34\00:18:37.39 not to get cancer? I think one of the most interesting 00:18:37.42\00:18:40.99 studies in breast cancer was done 00:18:41.02\00:18:43.33 by Dr. T. Colin Campbell it's called the China Study 00:18:43.36\00:18:47.76 and he found that in Chinese they had a much 00:18:47.79\00:18:51.78 lower risk Chinese women of breast cancer 00:18:51.81\00:18:55.36 than their Western counterparts that is you 00:18:55.39\00:18:58.64 take Chinese women and move them from China, 00:18:58.67\00:19:01.23 Rural China as where he did his studies 00:19:01.26\00:19:03.28 and move them to the west and the rates 00:19:03.31\00:19:06.39 of breast cancer go up markedly. 00:19:06.42\00:19:08.44 You don't change their genetics that fast, 00:19:08.47\00:19:11.78 but you do change their risk of breast cancer 00:19:11.81\00:19:14.92 and what he found is in the rural Chinese women, 00:19:14.95\00:19:19.06 he found about a 26 to 63 percent lower 00:19:19.09\00:19:27.58 estrogen level than in their Western counterparts 00:19:27.61\00:19:31.84 that is than in Chinese women who had moved 00:19:31.87\00:19:34.47 to the West and were eating our diets. Interesting. 00:19:34.50\00:19:37.88 If the estrogen level is lower the risk 00:19:37.91\00:19:41.22 of breast cancer is lower. The other thing 00:19:41.25\00:19:44.47 that was interesting about these people 00:19:44.50\00:19:47.30 is their menstruation started later. 00:19:47.33\00:19:50.76 The average age for a woman to start menstruating 00:19:50.79\00:19:54.79 in this country is 11 years of age. Wow. In China, 00:19:54.82\00:19:59.54 rural China the average age in T. Colin Campbell study 00:19:59.57\00:20:04.15 was 17.
