The opinions and ideas 00:00:06.87\00:00:09.78 expressed are those of the speaker. 00:00:09.79\00:00:11.58 Viewers are encouraged to draw their own 00:00:12.15\00:00:13.83 conclusions about the information presented. 00:00:13.84\00:00:16.18 The psalmist David says praise God for 00:00:37.17\00:00:40.76 I'm fearfully and wonderfully made. 00:00:40.77\00:00:42.91 What a great Psalm to have. 00:00:43.71\00:00:46.23 I wanna welcome you to Wonderfully Made. 00:00:46.75\00:00:48.22 I'm Doctor Jim Marcum and I want to 00:00:48.23\00:00:49.92 thank you so much for inviting us into 00:00:49.93\00:00:52.05 your home to be with you, 00:00:52.06\00:00:53.52 to listen to the health message. 00:00:53.84\00:00:55.88 Today we have an interesting topic. 00:00:56.37\00:00:58.44 I'm a cardiologist; normally I don't talk 00:00:58.75\00:01:00.76 about fields outside of cardiology but today 00:01:00.77\00:01:03.85 we're gonna talk about integrative medicine. 00:01:03.86\00:01:06.19 I find this very fascinating and it's 00:01:06.46\00:01:08.71 growing by leaps and bounds across America. 00:01:08.72\00:01:11.17 And here with us to discuss 00:01:11.62\00:01:12.89 it is Mr. Daniel Miller. And I wanna thank you 00:01:12.90\00:01:15.80 for joining this Dan. Thank you Jim. Listen, 00:01:15.81\00:01:17.72 while you're here today? Tell me little bit about 00:01:17.73\00:01:20.63 Heartwise Ministries. What's that all about? 00:01:20.64\00:01:22.42 Heartwise Ministries is a ministry that has been 00:01:22.84\00:01:26.02 started as a result of the books that you 00:01:26.34\00:01:29.03 have been writing. It was founded in 2005. 00:01:29.04\00:01:32.27 And it's based on truth, biblical principles of 00:01:33.37\00:01:39.76 truth, biblical principles of health, 00:01:39.77\00:01:42.35 so and so forth, truth, love and then healing. 00:01:42.36\00:01:45.85 Heartwise Ministries is a ministry that approaches 00:01:46.48\00:01:52.15 people with the different thought process, okay. 00:01:52.16\00:01:54.52 One that does away with say guilt, so and so forth. 00:01:55.11\00:01:59.94 So it starts with truth, correct, 00:02:00.44\00:02:02.59 and truth leads to love. Now I see a lot of 00:02:02.84\00:02:05.97 people talking about love in this world. 00:02:05.98\00:02:07.83 Okay but you know talking about it and showing 00:02:08.10\00:02:10.69 love is two, two different things, 00:02:10.70\00:02:12.22 two different readings, correct. 00:02:12.23\00:02:13.25 One of my definitions of love is putting 00:02:13.79\00:02:16.63 someone else's interest about yourself, right. 00:02:16.64\00:02:19.73 Okay, and of course the opposite of love 00:02:20.04\00:02:21.52 we see is selfishness, correct. 00:02:21.53\00:02:23.49 And we see a lot of that. Now part of the 00:02:23.50\00:02:26.57 truth is not believing lies, correct. 00:02:26.58\00:02:29.57 You know, and I see that all the time in healthcare. 00:02:29.58\00:02:32.08 You know some people believe in a low fat, 00:02:32.09\00:02:34.79 high fat will work better for you, 00:02:34.80\00:02:36.41 or take this vitamin or this herb will do 00:02:36.42\00:02:38.98 better than you, right. And I also see that 00:02:38.99\00:02:41.16 damaging the body because they believe 00:02:41.17\00:02:42.74 for instance if you believe that a 00:02:42.75\00:02:45.04 cigarette was gonna get you better. 00:02:45.05\00:02:46.94 If you really believe that, that would damage you, 00:02:46.95\00:02:49.21 correct, 'cause of course the cigarette's gonna 00:02:49.22\00:02:51.03 damage you. Well you can also take these, 00:02:51.04\00:02:53.09 the health principles into the spiritual world, 00:02:53.10\00:02:55.17 right. Now can you imagine if you believed, 00:02:55.18\00:02:57.81 for instance if you believe that you 00:02:58.30\00:02:59.77 had to earn your way into heaven. 00:02:59.78\00:03:01.11 That was a perfect example and it damages, 00:03:02.15\00:03:05.04 your burnt. You know, you thought processes 00:03:05.05\00:03:06.89 and that's exactly what Heartwise Ministries 00:03:07.80\00:03:10.20 is trying to get across, a ministry that approaches 00:03:10.21\00:03:15.02 things from a very basic simple direction. 00:03:15.03\00:03:18.26 And that's, I think God wanted our healthcare 00:03:18.68\00:03:22.67 to be simple, right. And there is more to 00:03:22.68\00:03:24.71 healing than just healing a physical body. 00:03:24.72\00:03:26.99 You know healing the spiritual self is what's 00:03:27.28\00:03:29.16 happening in the mind. With that in mind 00:03:29.17\00:03:31.52 Heartwise Ministries gathers questions that 00:03:31.53\00:03:34.39 people might have from all around the world. 00:03:34.40\00:03:36.33 And if you might happen to have a question, 00:03:36.70\00:03:38.76 make sure you get your questions into us. 00:03:38.77\00:03:41.45 We're now on the web at heartwiseministries.org. 00:03:41.99\00:03:45.71 www.heartwis eministries.org. 00:03:45.72\00:03:48.10 you can send your questions and what we do 00:03:48.41\00:03:50.00 is we group them around topics 00:03:50.01\00:03:52.00 and we try to answer these questions 00:03:52.31\00:03:54.28 from a biblical perspective. 00:03:54.29\00:03:55.74 Some people around the world don't have anyone 00:03:56.26\00:03:58.29 with healthcare knowledge or background 00:03:58.30\00:04:00.42 to go to, to give them a biblical perspective. 00:04:00.43\00:04:03.15 Very good, that's very good, yes. Okay. 00:04:03.16\00:04:05.08 Let's start with the first question. 00:04:05.09\00:04:06.64 Okay, the first question is from 00:04:07.24\00:04:09.65 Anne in Tampa, Florida. Okay. 00:04:09.66\00:04:11.01 I listen to the radio a lot, 00:04:11.91\00:04:13.40 especially on Sundays. I listen to Deborah Ray 00:04:13.67\00:04:16.79 and Robert Scott Bell, okay. I usually listen, 00:04:16.80\00:04:20.59 it says loosely listen, okay. 00:04:21.24\00:04:25.06 They talk about integrative medicine. 00:04:25.57\00:04:27.58 This is very interesting. I'm not sure I know 00:04:27.59\00:04:31.18 what this is, what is your take on this? 00:04:31.19\00:04:33.80 Okay, that is a great question and because 00:04:33.81\00:04:36.72 many people now are using integrative medicine 00:04:36.73\00:04:41.05 to take care of themselves. 00:04:41.06\00:04:42.22 Another word for it is sometimes they call it 00:04:42.67\00:04:44.77 complimentary medicine or some people 00:04:44.78\00:04:47.33 call it alternative medicine. 00:04:47.34\00:04:48.75 But I'm not sure that it really is alternative 00:04:49.30\00:04:51.70 medicine Dan. And let me sort of explain 00:04:51.71\00:04:53.91 to Anne what my take is on it? Years ago 00:04:53.92\00:04:58.39 when someone was sick, and the doctor there 00:04:58.89\00:05:01.29 used to sort of minister to all their needs. 00:05:01.30\00:05:03.61 Their physical needs, their spiritual needs, 00:05:04.45\00:05:06.65 or emotional needs, usually use all sorts of 00:05:06.66\00:05:09.35 tricks of the trade, right. And there wasn't 00:05:09.92\00:05:11.82 as many trick "tricks" as a trade as 00:05:11.83\00:05:13.83 there is now, right. Now I was trained in 00:05:13.84\00:05:17.99 traditional medicine where we use a lot of 00:05:18.00\00:05:20.95 pharmaceuticals, and unfortunately many 00:05:20.96\00:05:22.91 are just trained in that discipline. 00:05:23.21\00:05:24.94 But if you think about pharmaceuticals there 00:05:25.91\00:05:27.73 and pharmaceuticals change the chemical environment 00:05:27.74\00:05:30.92 in their body. Now there's other ways that 00:05:30.93\00:05:33.86 can also change the chemical environment 00:05:33.87\00:05:36.01 in the body. Now let's think, can you think 00:05:36.02\00:05:37.89 of one that would change the chemistry 00:05:37.90\00:05:39.17 of the body Dan. I would think positive 00:05:39.18\00:05:41.62 thought process. Exactly, your thought, 00:05:41.63\00:05:43.54 your mental outlook. Your mind is a very 00:05:43.55\00:05:45.67 powerful tool for you. Right, and one 00:05:45.68\00:05:47.87 example of that is the placebo effect, 00:05:47.88\00:05:49.97 correct. You know if you believe you're 00:05:49.98\00:05:51.73 gonna get better, one in four to five will get 00:05:51.74\00:05:55.09 better. That's pretty high percentage actually. 00:05:55.10\00:05:57.01 Yeah, and that's a lot of this is you know 00:05:57.02\00:05:59.04 it might be that the medicine is working, 00:05:59.05\00:06:01.51 it's that belief that you're being healed 00:06:01.52\00:06:03.27 that's working. Correct, right. Similarly not only 00:06:03.28\00:06:05.59 placebo effects but we've also shown that 00:06:05.60\00:06:07.78 in patients that healing touches occur. 00:06:07.79\00:06:10.55 Whether you know if I touch you and you believe 00:06:10.56\00:06:12.69 in me and I say Dan you're gonna get better. 00:06:12.70\00:06:14.79 This is not a problem, it's gonna be gone tomorrow, 00:06:14.80\00:06:17.16 right. There is a powerful belief just to have that 00:06:17.17\00:06:19.73 reassurance that all of a sudden 00:06:19.74\00:06:21.54 that symptom is gone. Being told by somebody 00:06:21.55\00:06:23.42 that knows what they're talking about 00:06:23.43\00:06:24.75 that is very powerful. For instance I deal with 00:06:24.76\00:06:27.62 a lot of people with chest pain, and sometimes 00:06:27.63\00:06:30.22 I can come to them and I know beyond a shadow 00:06:30.23\00:06:32.88 of a doubt that this chest pain is not coming 00:06:32.89\00:06:34.65 from the heart. I know it's coming from stress. 00:06:34.66\00:06:36.50 But by doing a test or proving it to them 00:06:37.14\00:06:39.39 you know I can say I give them that assurance. 00:06:39.93\00:06:41.84 This you know you are assured, your chemistry 00:06:42.15\00:06:44.42 gets better when you have assurance, right. 00:06:44.43\00:06:46.61 Now so we talked, you know other ways you can 00:06:47.60\00:06:49.68 change your chemistry, you know getting back 00:06:49.69\00:06:51.06 to that, you can change your chemistry by exercise, 00:06:51.07\00:06:53.22 correct. The food you eat. How well you rest. 00:06:53.23\00:06:57.83 Your spiritual status. I think a lot of things 00:06:59.31\00:07:01.60 even down to the relationships that 00:07:01.61\00:07:03.65 you have with friends, exactly 00:07:03.66\00:07:05.29 family and so and so forth, I think they have 00:07:05.30\00:07:06.52 major impact on how you feel in your life. 00:07:06.53\00:07:09.31 So all of that you know comprises health. 00:07:09.32\00:07:11.48 So anything that changes your chemistry 00:07:12.26\00:07:14.72 can be effective by this integrative medicine. 00:07:14.73\00:07:16.83 For instance the herbs you know integrative 00:07:16.84\00:07:18.87 medicine uses a lot of herbs in their use. 00:07:18.88\00:07:22.01 But herbs are very similar to medicine, 00:07:22.33\00:07:24.09 they change the chemical environment, correct. 00:07:24.10\00:07:26.23 Some people out there are using magnets 00:07:26.81\00:07:29.17 which I don't believe, I don't think that 00:07:29.18\00:07:31.16 changes your chemical environment. 00:07:31.17\00:07:32.81 They've done studies on that? Yes, they have done 00:07:32.82\00:07:34.31 studies on the magnets. The studies have not shown 00:07:34.32\00:07:37.77 that they have any proven clinical benefit 00:07:37.78\00:07:39.73 other than maybe a placebo benefit, right. 00:07:39.74\00:07:41.94 What are other things acupressure, 00:07:42.53\00:07:44.38 chiropractor you know manipulating bones, 00:07:45.26\00:07:46.93 correct, massage for instance you know if 00:07:46.94\00:07:49.43 you know the other day you told me you had 00:07:49.44\00:07:51.22 a kink in your shoulder, okay. When it's massaged, 00:07:51.23\00:07:54.80 the body releases chemicals that help 00:07:54.81\00:07:57.13 you now for instance if someone hurt your 00:07:57.14\00:07:59.34 arm what's the first thing you do. 00:07:59.35\00:08:00.61 You rub, rub it, when you rub it you releases, 00:08:00.62\00:08:03.05 natural healing substances. 00:08:03.06\00:08:05.03 So that's the very important, right. 00:08:05.36\00:08:07.79 A lot of people don't realize that you can 00:08:07.80\00:08:09.05 change your chemistry just by laughing. 00:08:09.06\00:08:10.80 You know if you get a good belly laugh. 00:08:11.49\00:08:12.95 What does that cause? It releases endorphins, 00:08:12.96\00:08:15.79 okay. You'll get a lot of endorphins so I tell 00:08:15.80\00:08:18.33 people to just; you know go around 00:08:18.34\00:08:19.64 laughing especially if you're in pain. 00:08:19.65\00:08:21.24 How do endorphins work? Endorphins are the 00:08:21.25\00:08:23.79 natural pain killers that the body produces. 00:08:23.80\00:08:26.54 It's sort of the natural stress hormone. 00:08:27.01\00:08:28.74 That's basically what we're talking about it. 00:08:28.75\00:08:30.57 Yes, yeah is exactly, so in my take on 00:08:30.58\00:08:33.96 integrative or complementary medicine and 00:08:33.97\00:08:36.41 would be anything that changes the body's 00:08:36.42\00:08:38.67 chemical from whatever means 00:08:38.68\00:08:40.70 is seen as integrative medicine. 00:08:41.32\00:08:43.62 I'm putting a bunch of these modalities together, 00:08:43.63\00:08:46.38 we've got this integrative approach and I think 00:08:47.39\00:08:49.20 this is the best way if you can rule out 00:08:49.21\00:08:51.12 what's true and what's not true, correct. 00:08:51.13\00:08:54.31 So I have this problem of you know you see all 00:08:54.32\00:08:56.14 these ads on the paper Dan, I met the Millvina 00:08:56.15\00:08:58.99 you know this is guy touting you know 00:08:59.00\00:09:00.55 high clarets, have you heard that one, yeah. 00:09:00.56\00:09:02.55 What is that all about? Well I think we got a 00:09:02.56\00:09:04.74 question that will approach that. 00:09:04.75\00:09:06.13 Well we'll talk about. 00:09:06.14\00:09:07.26 We may be hearing a little bit. 00:09:07.27\00:09:08.38 I'm not sure if I wanna go there right now. 00:09:08.39\00:09:10.46 Well I don't wanna go but the point is your hear 00:09:10.47\00:09:13.06 about these things. Exactly, let me ask you 00:09:13.07\00:09:14.38 this, what are some of the negative and the positive 00:09:14.39\00:09:16.80 outcomes of integrative medicine? Well some of the 00:09:17.55\00:09:20.81 positive outcomes is it merges the truth in a 00:09:20.82\00:09:23.49 lot of different worlds, right. 00:09:23.50\00:09:25.01 Okay for instance, if you can accomplish the 00:09:25.02\00:09:28.47 same thing without taking any medication 00:09:28.48\00:09:30.65 with the side effects. Let's say you can 00:09:30.66\00:09:32.61 lower your blood pressure and cut your 00:09:32.62\00:09:35.32 stress down by regular exercise and proper 00:09:35.33\00:09:37.81 rest and drink enough water wouldn't that be 00:09:37.82\00:09:40.46 better than taking a blood pressure medicine, yes. 00:09:40.47\00:09:42.28 Well that could be an integrative approach, 00:09:42.29\00:09:44.05 and how about for chronic back pain? 00:09:44.84\00:09:46.44 If you can see a chiropractor that could 00:09:46.75\00:09:48.56 manipulate certain ways and release medications 00:09:48.57\00:09:51.74 or deep massage that could you know help 00:09:51.75\00:09:54.57 the pain that way, wouldn't that might be 00:09:54.58\00:09:56.06 better than a pain medication, right. 00:09:56.07\00:09:57.70 It gets to the core of the problem. 00:09:57.71\00:09:59.35 But likewise integrative medicine I think also has 00:09:59.70\00:10:02.71 to work on someone's spiritual side. 00:10:02.72\00:10:04.71 I believe so. Because you know you talked about 00:10:05.08\00:10:06.84 all those things that damage, so I think 00:10:06.85\00:10:08.45 that in knowing the truth and that's what 00:10:08.46\00:10:10.13 I've done looked at, well how do you know the truth? 00:10:10.14\00:10:12.06 Well I go back, you know I try to go back in all 00:10:12.39\00:10:15.05 these decisions go back to the Bible, 00:10:15.06\00:10:16.49 the real source of truth. And prayer and the 00:10:16.81\00:10:19.31 Holy Spirit helping you through your problems. 00:10:19.32\00:10:21.17 Exactly, because you know, I admit the more 00:10:21.18\00:10:23.59 you learn, the less you know. 00:10:23.60\00:10:25.46 And I feel like as all these areas I know 00:10:26.58\00:10:28.83 so much less now than I used to, 00:10:28.84\00:10:30.68 I almost feel humbled. And the only way I can do 00:10:30.69\00:10:32.92 it is you know look at the data 00:10:32.93\00:10:34.55 that's available, right. Pray about it, ask about 00:10:34.56\00:10:37.35 what the truth and let God really 00:10:37.36\00:10:39.16 lead me in love, right. But you know that's 00:10:39.17\00:10:41.73 one thing that I think is a universal healing, 00:10:41.74\00:10:44.18 that is the word love. You know God is love 00:10:44.19\00:10:47.38 I mean. Of course yes biblically, 00:10:47.39\00:10:48.91 God is a principle. You know gives us, 00:10:49.57\00:10:50.54 gives you that assurance and I think that's 00:10:50.55\00:10:52.26 a healing force in itself, right. 00:10:52.27\00:10:54.05 But those are all the components and it makes up 00:10:54.36\00:10:57.13 integrative medicine and more but I think 00:10:57.14\00:10:59.46 we're gonna hear so much more about this because 00:10:59.47\00:11:01.64 I think people want to get 00:11:01.65\00:11:02.92 at the cause of their diseases. 00:11:02.93\00:11:04.82 They're tired of taking pills, they're tired of 00:11:05.46\00:11:07.90 having procedures that they 00:11:07.91\00:11:08.99 want to be whole again. And this is an alternative 00:11:09.00\00:11:13.05 way to do that. Right, and I think you're gonna 00:11:13.06\00:11:14.75 hear a lot more about this over the next 00:11:14.76\00:11:16.30 couple of years. Right, and let's go to, 00:11:16.31\00:11:18.57 to the next question. This is from Allen 00:11:18.58\00:11:21.01 in England, okay. Allen says my home is in 00:11:21.02\00:11:25.36 England, in London. My cholesterol level 00:11:25.37\00:11:28.43 has been high for several years, okay. 00:11:28.44\00:11:30.26 I have taken numerous medications but they 00:11:31.16\00:11:33.45 mess up my liver function. Are there ways to lower 00:11:33.46\00:11:36.98 cholesterol other than medication? Okay. 00:11:36.99\00:11:39.92 I guess my question to you right after that 00:11:39.93\00:11:41.93 would be what's cholesterol, 00:11:41.94\00:11:44.23 and how does that effect us, 00:11:44.64\00:11:45.87 how would it effect us? That's good, okay. 00:11:45.88\00:11:47.67 Well cholesterol is a substance that's made 00:11:47.68\00:11:50.17 up of lipids or fats, and unfortunately in 00:11:50.18\00:11:53.72 the last several years our diet has changed 00:11:53.73\00:11:56.67 to the point where we're taking in too much fat. 00:11:56.68\00:11:59.01 You know I talk about fast food but now 00:11:59.34\00:12:02.22 it should be called fat food, right. 00:12:02.23\00:12:04.05 You know 80 million people are eating 00:12:04.31\00:12:06.25 this stuff everyday. And we don't exercise 00:12:06.26\00:12:09.04 as much to burn off our fats, so the fats have 00:12:09.05\00:12:11.41 to go somewhere. I know a fellow the other day 00:12:11.42\00:12:14.42 that I bumped into and I says, well 00:12:14.43\00:12:16.36 how do you eat. And he says well you know I eat, 00:12:16.37\00:12:18.97 he ate at Hardee's some biscuits and gravy, right. 00:12:19.45\00:12:22.00 At lunch he has a burger, some hamburgers, 00:12:22.30\00:12:24.61 at night he didn't get off work till about 8'o clock 00:12:24.94\00:12:27.36 at night. So he had his big meal at night. 00:12:27.37\00:12:29.20 You know heavy stuff, right, right. 00:12:29.21\00:12:30.79 And usually had some ice cream with the meal 00:12:30.80\00:12:33.83 at night and then he went to bed. 00:12:33.84\00:12:35.99 Is this something that you recommend? No. No. 00:12:36.29\00:12:38.60 I don't recommend that stuff. 00:12:38.61\00:12:40.06 But anyway if you think about, now he didn't know 00:12:40.07\00:12:42.30 about it, bless his heart, yeah, yeah. 00:12:42.31\00:12:43.46 And I was trying to you know give him a 00:12:43.47\00:12:44.54 glimmer of truth, but if you do this over and over, 00:12:44.55\00:12:46.11 this cholesterol or fats have to 00:12:46.12\00:12:48.53 be stored somewhere. Well unfortunately it's 00:12:48.54\00:12:51.09 being stored in the arteries of the heart 00:12:51.10\00:12:53.47 which can cause cardiovascular disease, 00:12:53.95\00:12:56.29 in the artery of the necks; it could cause all 00:12:56.56\00:12:59.28 sorts of problems. Not to mention that 00:12:59.29\00:13:01.14 if you take this caloric inputs sooner or later 00:13:01.15\00:13:03.30 you're gonna be obese, right. So my approach 00:13:03.31\00:13:07.24 to him was, this is what cholesterol does, 00:13:07.25\00:13:08.83 it clogs up your system. So now Allen's question 00:13:08.84\00:13:12.16 was is there ways to lower his cholesterol 00:13:12.17\00:13:13.89 without taking a medication, correct. 00:13:13.90\00:13:15.65 Now most of the cholesterol medicines 00:13:16.20\00:13:17.94 out there are called Statins, okay and they 00:13:17.95\00:13:20.75 do work in the enzyme systems in the liver and 00:13:20.76\00:13:24.39 they can cause abnormalities 00:13:24.40\00:13:25.98 in the liver function. So that's why if you're on 00:13:25.99\00:13:28.37 a Statin, you usually have your liver checked 00:13:28.38\00:13:30.49 every so often, right, on depending what that is. 00:13:30.50\00:13:33.04 Well he can't take it safely 00:13:33.05\00:13:34.31 'cause it hurts his liver. 00:13:34.32\00:13:35.37 Now other things can bring down cholesterol nicely. 00:13:35.38\00:13:37.59 And this is where you know you sort of 00:13:37.84\00:13:39.69 integrate different approaches. Correct, 00:13:39.70\00:13:42.10 such as exercise. Do you ever view 00:13:42.11\00:13:45.53 exercise as a medication? I believe very possibly. 00:13:45.54\00:13:49.25 Yeah. I mean physiologically exercise 00:13:49.26\00:13:51.04 does a number of good things for the body. 00:13:51.05\00:13:53.02 It lowers blood pressure; it loses weight, 00:13:53.03\00:13:54.68 cuts your stress level, so exercise 00:13:54.90\00:13:56.83 would be treated as a medication. Right, 00:13:56.84\00:13:58.86 eating correctly, that's kind of a no brainer there. 00:13:59.17\00:14:02.14 Well but that's hard in our society. 00:14:02.15\00:14:03.93 Well yes, we have. I don't know what they eat 00:14:04.32\00:14:05.91 in London, England but I'm sure that their 00:14:05.92\00:14:08.04 diet is not that dissimilar from 00:14:08.05\00:14:09.90 what we're eating here, right. 00:14:09.91\00:14:11.15 And there are some other natural herbs. 00:14:11.45\00:14:13.69 Let me talk about couple of those, okay. 00:14:13.70\00:14:15.16 A lot of people don't know that soy products, 00:14:15.90\00:14:18.17 soy products can lower your cholesterol, 00:14:18.55\00:14:21.03 okay soy products. Such as soy milk, soy milk, 00:14:21.74\00:14:26.26 soy beans, soy butter, anything that's made 00:14:26.79\00:14:29.00 of soy that can lower, okay. There ae these 00:14:29.01\00:14:31.51 substances in India, they do something for 00:14:32.12\00:14:34.33 ear called a Guggul gum, right. 00:14:34.34\00:14:36.76 It's Guggul and that helps lower cholesterol there. 00:14:37.00\00:14:39.05 Now there is one that you hear a lot about 00:14:39.30\00:14:41.14 call red yeast rice. That lowers cholesterol but 00:14:41.15\00:14:44.84 it has the same compound that our statins have 00:14:44.85\00:14:47.51 in it, right. So it can also affect your liver. 00:14:47.52\00:14:49.83 So Allen that you would probably 00:14:50.13\00:14:51.49 one he wouldn't want to take. 00:14:51.50\00:14:52.47 Right, now let me ask you this. 00:14:52.48\00:14:56.60 Taking these natural products along with 00:14:58.50\00:15:01.74 medications that he is already on, 00:15:01.75\00:15:03.83 would that cause any conflict? It could, 00:15:03.84\00:15:06.53 it could because you know remember 00:15:06.54\00:15:08.42 upfront we said all of these things you put in 00:15:08.43\00:15:11.07 your body from whatever stimulus you can, 00:15:11.08\00:15:13.62 they can always change your chemistry. 00:15:13.63\00:15:15.55 So if you change your chemistry with the 00:15:16.16\00:15:17.76 medication, change it with herbs, sometimes 00:15:17.77\00:15:20.88 they could both work together and harm 00:15:20.89\00:15:22.74 you even more, right. So I do these herbs as 00:15:22.75\00:15:25.68 similar to prescription medications. 00:15:25.69\00:15:27.97 So he has got to be very careful about what he 00:15:27.98\00:15:30.01 might use as, that you mentioned that 00:15:30.02\00:15:31.83 as an alternative. Yeah because some of these 00:15:31.84\00:15:33.50 can be very dangerous, but you know, 00:15:33.51\00:15:34.91 we know that exercise is not gonna hurt, no. 00:15:34.92\00:15:37.06 We know that soy products on your food. 00:15:37.28\00:15:39.24 And you know there are some nuts that are been 00:15:39.25\00:15:41.49 down very protective, specifically the two that 00:15:41.50\00:15:44.41 I really highly promote is walnuts 00:15:44.42\00:15:46.58 and almonds, correct. And in some studies 00:15:46.59\00:15:48.75 they have lowered the chance of having a 00:15:48.76\00:15:50.28 heart attack by up to 50 percent. That's a huge. 00:15:50.29\00:15:53.11 You know but you don't hear as much 00:15:53.12\00:15:54.93 about eating nuts. You know you hear about 00:15:54.94\00:15:56.74 taking a statin which lowers it too, right. 00:15:56.75\00:15:59.17 But you know, well the statin is a easy way to go. 00:15:59.18\00:16:01.39 Right, but now think about this, diet for years 00:16:01.40\00:16:04.70 changes the body's chemistry. 00:16:04.71\00:16:06.32 Now we talked about soy lowering cholesterol, 00:16:06.81\00:16:08.51 nuts helping you, water is a tremendous thing 00:16:08.81\00:16:11.84 to take too for treatment of disease right, right. 00:16:11.85\00:16:14.21 Okay, let's move to next one. 00:16:14.57\00:16:15.64 Okay this next question comes from 00:16:17.29\00:16:19.47 Carter in Tennessee. Does Coenzyme Q10 00:16:19.48\00:16:23.36 make you heart stronger? My grandma told me 00:16:23.81\00:16:26.85 I should be taking this, 00:16:26.86\00:16:27.99 I don't have heart problems. 00:16:28.38\00:16:30.00 My grandma also says 00:16:30.59\00:16:32.02 I should take tons of vitamins. 00:16:32.03\00:16:33.79 He says help. Oh you know. What is Coenzyme Q10? 00:16:34.45\00:16:38.79 Oh Coenzyme Q10 is a substance that's naturally 00:16:38.80\00:16:41.81 released by the body that helps muscle function. 00:16:41.82\00:16:45.05 When should it be used? Well if there is a 00:16:45.88\00:16:47.95 deficiency in Coenzyme Q10 it uses. 00:16:47.96\00:16:50.61 It's never been proven to help heart beat 00:16:50.62\00:16:52.78 stronger but a lot of people think 00:16:52.79\00:16:54.24 it might work, right. And that's what 00:16:54.25\00:16:55.77 interesting about integrative medicine Dan 00:16:55.78\00:16:58.04 is most of the studies have never been done, 00:16:58.05\00:17:00.51 because there is no one who will fund the study, 00:17:01.26\00:17:03.74 to study whether this therapy works better 00:17:03.75\00:17:05.81 than this therapy and actually see how the 00:17:05.82\00:17:07.63 interactions occur, right. But back now I do 00:17:07.64\00:17:10.38 use Coenzyme Q10 sometimes. 00:17:10.39\00:17:12.54 For instance if I had a person that had high 00:17:12.55\00:17:14.78 cholesterol and they started having muscle 00:17:14.79\00:17:17.30 soreness, I might give him Coenzyme Q10, right. 00:17:17.31\00:17:20.11 Some athletes that have muscle soreness deplete 00:17:20.36\00:17:23.29 Coenzyme Q10 they benefit from it, correct. 00:17:23.30\00:17:25.65 If a person did have a weak heart and 00:17:25.66\00:17:27.54 there was nothing else to do, I don't think 00:17:27.55\00:17:29.42 it would hurt any and if few studies 00:17:29.43\00:17:31.18 have suggested that it might do some good. 00:17:31.19\00:17:33.25 Now why would an athlete deplete that? 00:17:33.48\00:17:35.78 Well because they use up their muscle. 00:17:35.79\00:17:38.02 You know you just, they exercise all something 00:17:38.03\00:17:40.67 I don't do but they exercise all the time 00:17:40.68\00:17:42.65 they get soreness, right. You know soreness 00:17:42.66\00:17:44.73 in their muscles that's they are tearing 00:17:44.74\00:17:46.08 their muscles down, right. But now getting back 00:17:46.09\00:17:48.90 to her question about, tons of vitamins 00:17:48.91\00:17:51.25 I mean lots of people take 00:17:51.26\00:17:53.21 tons of vitamins now. 00:17:53.22\00:17:54.59 And what I've been telling people is, 00:17:55.12\00:17:56.95 you know there's lot of supplements out there 00:17:56.96\00:17:59.01 for vitamins but God made that if you eat 00:17:59.02\00:18:01.17 fresh fruits, grains. You get balanced diet. 00:18:01.18\00:18:03.65 Right with the wide variety of colors, 00:18:03.66\00:18:05.84 right, you get all of the nutrients that you need. 00:18:05.85\00:18:08.70 Now conversely, a lot of people don't eat that way. 00:18:08.71\00:18:11.53 Right, well it's very difficult. 00:18:11.54\00:18:12.78 And in those people that don't eat that way 00:18:13.06\00:18:14.79 I do think they benefit from taking 00:18:14.80\00:18:16.88 vitamin supplements, right. 00:18:16.89\00:18:18.36 Now lot of people think though that you 00:18:18.62\00:18:20.50 are better absorbed if you eat your vitamins, right. 00:18:20.51\00:18:23.62 Let me ask you this, yeah. Is it possible 00:18:23.90\00:18:26.20 that there are other supplements out there 00:18:26.21\00:18:28.42 that do make the heart stronger also. 00:18:28.43\00:18:29.86 Oh yeah, there are supplements out there 00:18:29.87\00:18:31.70 some we know about, some that we don't 00:18:31.71\00:18:33.17 know about, correct. That are out there that 00:18:33.18\00:18:35.26 make the heart stronger in different 00:18:35.27\00:18:37.31 types of ways, correct. 00:18:37.32\00:18:38.46 Okay that was a good question from Carter. 00:18:38.81\00:18:41.67 You know another side comment, 00:18:41.68\00:18:44.84 there was a generations differ I believe 00:18:44.85\00:18:48.01 on vitamin intake. Oh yeah. I know the older 00:18:48.75\00:18:51.44 generation seem to push vitamins on 00:18:51.45\00:18:53.48 and the newer generation seem to go for the 00:18:53.49\00:18:56.38 medication. But you know the newer 00:18:56.39\00:18:57.97 generation probably eats worse than the 00:18:57.98\00:18:59.75 older generation now, correct. 00:18:59.76\00:19:01.05 You know they don't use much fruit, 00:19:01.06\00:19:02.24 fresh vegetables, salads that get all the 00:19:02.25\00:19:04.99 vitamins that you need, right. 00:19:05.00\00:19:06.94 Okay, next question. Over the last few years 00:19:07.94\00:19:11.17 my blood pressure has been running high. 00:19:11.18\00:19:13.15 I took a prescription medication but it 00:19:13.73\00:19:15.74 made me nauseated and weak. Are there 00:19:15.75\00:19:18.64 any natural measures I can take to lower my 00:19:18.65\00:19:21.02 blood pressure? This comes from 00:19:21.03\00:19:23.06 Stephanie in New Zealand. 00:19:23.07\00:19:24.18 That's a great question Stephanie and I get 00:19:24.47\00:19:27.04 that all the time. The medicines that you 00:19:27.05\00:19:30.12 take none of them are free. They all come 00:19:30.13\00:19:32.42 with some baggage; they all come with 00:19:32.43\00:19:33.92 side effects, correct. You know it does one 00:19:33.93\00:19:36.66 thing but it alters your chemistry just we've 00:19:36.67\00:19:38.59 talked about. Unfortunately when I 00:19:38.60\00:19:40.10 talked to people about lowering their 00:19:40.11\00:19:41.23 blood pressure naturally Dan. What do they 00:19:41.24\00:19:43.84 do? Well sometimes they don't like it. 00:19:43.85\00:19:45.60 For instance the first thing I like people to do 00:19:45.61\00:19:47.77 is I cut out all the substances that can 00:19:47.78\00:19:50.05 make you blood pressure go high, right. 00:19:50.06\00:19:51.88 I ask them if they smoke, consider not smoking. 00:19:51.89\00:19:54.39 Caffeine raises up the blood pressure. 00:19:54.75\00:19:56.59 How about stresses in life. 00:19:57.12\00:19:58.36 Stress in life raises blood pressure, 00:19:58.37\00:20:00.10 salt or sodium content, right. 00:20:00.11\00:20:02.34 And a lot of people say oh I don't salt my food, 00:20:02.35\00:20:04.26 but they eat a lot of canned foods, correct, 00:20:04.65\00:20:06.75 packet foods, processed food, all of them 00:20:06.76\00:20:08.52 have sodium in it. So, first I say well can you 00:20:08.53\00:20:11.22 exercise do this can you do the rest first. 00:20:11.23\00:20:13.46 You know unfortunately most people say 00:20:13.95\00:20:15.79 I don't want to do that I'd rather take a 00:20:16.09\00:20:17.56 medicine. It's the easy way out. 00:20:17.57\00:20:19.84 Now that's a sad state, you know and I say 00:20:19.85\00:20:21.64 well you know our bodies weren't 00:20:21.65\00:20:23.73 design to take all this. They were design 00:20:23.74\00:20:25.83 for this natural health that God did, 00:20:25.84\00:20:28.22 and we break these laws more 00:20:28.23\00:20:30.75 bad things happen, right. 00:20:30.76\00:20:32.03 So, I try it you know to meet him with rest, 00:20:32.04\00:20:33.97 and let's pray about this, why don't we try 00:20:33.98\00:20:35.79 to do a walking program. You know one of the 00:20:35.80\00:20:37.70 things that causes high blood pressure 00:20:37.71\00:20:39.93 is a condition condition call sleep apnea. 00:20:39.94\00:20:42.22 Right and what is sleep apnea? That is a condition 00:20:42.50\00:20:46.08 where people don't get enough air at nights, 00:20:46.09\00:20:48.41 like they are going under water. 00:20:48.42\00:20:49.60 And they don't have enough air they come up usually 00:20:49.85\00:20:51.93 because an obstruction in the airway. 00:20:51.94\00:20:53.83 So, then begin tired all the time from 00:20:54.13\00:20:56.82 lack of sleep causes high blood pressure 00:20:56.83\00:20:59.83 then is what you are saying? Well I'm saying 00:20:59.84\00:21:01.31 the condition call sleep apnea because 00:21:01.32\00:21:03.42 your tissues made to renew at night, right. 00:21:03.43\00:21:05.81 Well when tissues don't renew at night 00:21:06.17\00:21:08.22 that puts stress on the body. 00:21:08.23\00:21:09.66 The stress hormones that we talked about 00:21:09.90\00:21:12.42 in other shows, right, the epinephrine the cortisol, 00:21:12.43\00:21:15.43 all those things raise blood pressure. 00:21:15.77\00:21:17.63 So, I think any stress on the body 00:21:17.64\00:21:19.85 can raise blood pressure. 00:21:20.24\00:21:21.21 If I punched right here your blood pressure go up. 00:21:21.22\00:21:23.95 If you stay awake for two, three days 00:21:23.96\00:21:25.66 that will put stress on it, right. 00:21:25.67\00:21:27.07 So, I try to cut back all those external stress even 00:21:27.08\00:21:30.04 a bad relationship could raise blood pressure. 00:21:30.05\00:21:31.81 Yeah I can see that happen. 00:21:31.82\00:21:33.01 So, these are things that I would work on 00:21:33.02\00:21:35.79 naturally first now is there natural herb 00:21:35.80\00:21:38.46 or anything like that I guess 00:21:38.47\00:21:39.76 that's what she is asking too, 00:21:39.77\00:21:40.92 but if you think about it Dan 00:21:41.17\00:21:42.74 that's the same as taking a medicine. 00:21:42.75\00:21:44.18 Yeah and then you run in the same conflict 00:21:44.19\00:21:47.48 that Allen had from England. 00:21:47.49\00:21:49.69 Let me ask you this would major lifestyle 00:21:49.95\00:21:52.24 changes having effect on high blood pressure. 00:21:52.25\00:21:55.97 Yeah in major lifestyle checks would 00:21:56.19\00:21:58.97 help greatly for the good. 00:21:58.98\00:22:00.64 Now one of things I tell people 00:22:00.97\00:22:02.69 do you take a day of rest, right. 00:22:02.70\00:22:04.85 Do you sleep well at night, 00:22:04.86\00:22:05.83 do you take vacations. 00:22:05.84\00:22:06.81 These could all be treated for, are you happy 00:22:06.86\00:22:09.19 with your job, correct. I see the people that 00:22:09.20\00:22:11.04 retire from an unhappy job situation, 00:22:11.05\00:22:13.54 and their blood pressure comes right down. 00:22:13.55\00:22:15.23 Right, but what are some of the things that 00:22:15.24\00:22:17.57 she can do, maybe from a lifestyle perspectives 00:22:17.58\00:22:21.05 such as reading, or you know prayer possibly, 00:22:21.06\00:22:26.16 introducing that into her life and allowing the 00:22:26.37\00:22:28.96 Holy Spirit to come into her life and 00:22:28.97\00:22:31.16 make changes in her life from biblical. 00:22:31.17\00:22:34.93 Well now you are getting at the core problem 00:22:35.14\00:22:37.51 because you are giving her the you know the power 00:22:37.52\00:22:39.88 through God, to physically make these changes 00:22:39.89\00:22:42.68 that she does knew to come back to the truth, 00:22:42.69\00:22:44.74 right that he designed us to be, right. 00:22:44.75\00:22:46.53 So, I think that as you know God and how he has 00:22:46.89\00:22:48.99 designed us and how is to work, if you can 00:22:49.00\00:22:51.02 get back to that model, you know it's gonna. 00:22:51.03\00:22:54.18 Then allows you to naturally take care of. 00:22:54.19\00:22:56.58 And it gives you greater chance of healing 00:22:56.59\00:22:58.16 naturally without depending on extra. 00:22:58.17\00:23:00.57 Now, do I use blood pressure medicines? 00:23:00.91\00:23:02.55 Yes I do, but is it my first choice? 00:23:02.62\00:23:05.11 No it's not, right. But, that's what integrative 00:23:05.42\00:23:08.08 medicine is using all these techniques. 00:23:08.09\00:23:09.66 Some people for instances relaxing music 00:23:09.67\00:23:12.23 can bring the blood pressure down, right, 00:23:12.24\00:23:13.62 therapeutic massage, correct. 00:23:13.99\00:23:15.59 You know all of these things can sort of relax 00:23:15.85\00:23:18.59 the body and other you know 00:23:18.60\00:23:20.13 for men it might be playing golf, yeah. 00:23:20.14\00:23:22.26 But, this is what integrative medicine 00:23:22.27\00:23:24.08 is all about. For some people it would. 00:23:24.09\00:23:25.63 Yeah, you don't want me to play golf. 00:23:27.24\00:23:29.21 No, it doesn't relax you. You know we miss 00:23:29.22\00:23:31.30 one part of our question also is she made 00:23:31.31\00:23:34.14 the comment that her prescription 00:23:34.83\00:23:36.78 medicine made her nauseated and weak. 00:23:36.79\00:23:39.19 Why would she be getting sick to her stomach 00:23:40.13\00:23:42.24 because of her prescription medicine, 00:23:42.88\00:23:44.69 is it too strong a prescription? 00:23:45.75\00:23:47.08 Well remember all these medicines weren't 00:23:47.35\00:23:49.77 made naturally for the body, right. 00:23:49.78\00:23:51.81 It might be this is just upsetting her system, 00:23:52.05\00:23:54.40 the system trying to throw it off and it says 00:23:54.41\00:23:56.10 no, this is a side effect and almost every 00:23:56.11\00:23:58.02 medication out there the side effect 00:23:58.03\00:24:00.18 one of the side effects is nausea, correct. 00:24:00.19\00:24:01.99 And every medicine I know almost can 00:24:02.20\00:24:04.13 cause you to be sick at your stomach. 00:24:04.14\00:24:05.72 That's why if you have to take a 00:24:05.98\00:24:07.43 medicine we try sometimes 00:24:07.44\00:24:08.75 to try to take it with the meal, right. 00:24:08.76\00:24:10.75 But, now I think you are understanding, 00:24:11.03\00:24:12.66 and I hope the audience is understanding 00:24:12.67\00:24:14.52 what this integrative medicines about. 00:24:14.80\00:24:16.74 It's taking the best of many different worlds 00:24:16.95\00:24:19.47 looking at the Bible, different principles. 00:24:20.02\00:24:22.10 Looking at the Bible and seeing if we can stay 00:24:22.11\00:24:23.65 within God's laws and God's precepts 00:24:23.66\00:24:25.75 and coming up with a treatment plan. 00:24:25.98\00:24:27.57 Correct all these natural laws. 00:24:27.81\00:24:29.51 Alright, the next question, 00:24:31.39\00:24:32.64 herbs been around for years and are 00:24:34.24\00:24:36.79 prefer to many medications. 00:24:36.80\00:24:38.60 What do you think about hawthorn 00:24:39.14\00:24:41.03 for a weak heart, okay. What is hawthorn anyway? 00:24:41.04\00:24:43.80 Hawthorn is a natural herb okay that's usually 00:24:43.81\00:24:47.49 a leaf and especially in Germany they use 00:24:47.50\00:24:50.46 this a lot for weak hearts and it actually makes 00:24:50.47\00:24:53.70 the heart squeeze stronger and pump better. 00:24:53.71\00:24:56.29 So, this is a very known herbal treatment 00:24:56.55\00:24:59.38 in certain countries and in United States. 00:25:00.31\00:25:03.11 It's actually safer than some of the medicines 00:25:03.37\00:25:05.46 we use to make the heart squeeze stronger. 00:25:05.47\00:25:07.66 One of the medicines we use to use is a lot 00:25:07.83\00:25:09.90 call Digoxin, right. Well hawthorn in some 00:25:09.91\00:25:13.37 studies is shown it work just as good as that 00:25:13.38\00:25:15.34 with less toxicities as it causes less problems. 00:25:15.59\00:25:18.86 So, I think this is another example that 00:25:19.10\00:25:20.80 in the herbal realm, but you do have to 00:25:20.81\00:25:23.45 to treat this like medicine. 00:25:23.46\00:25:24.43 This one has been studied, right. 00:25:24.44\00:25:26.14 And one of the things that I've been going 00:25:26.15\00:25:28.20 over is this integrative medicine. 00:25:28.21\00:25:31.54 Well this is an article that was written in 2005 00:25:31.55\00:25:34.98 that actually is gone over every study on 00:25:35.29\00:25:37.29 these herbal supplements, right and actually 00:25:37.30\00:25:39.26 shown which ones work, which ones don't work. 00:25:39.27\00:25:41.28 So, there are other supplements then that 00:25:41.29\00:25:43.55 would benefit her besides the hawthorn. 00:25:45.11\00:25:47.29 Well its according if its just for the weak 00:25:47.78\00:25:49.42 heart you know hawthorn would. 00:25:49.43\00:25:50.92 Remember we talked little bit about Coenzyme Q10, 00:25:51.21\00:25:53.77 right. Yeah, well such ginkgo maybe. 00:25:53.78\00:25:56.91 Well the ginkgo below but it might help a little 00:25:56.97\00:25:59.37 bit because you know different ones 00:25:59.38\00:26:01.08 are for different things, okay. 00:26:01.09\00:26:02.46 Like for instance you know ginkgo and some of 00:26:02.67\00:26:04.65 them might be use for as it more of a 00:26:04.66\00:26:06.24 stimulant thing of that, okay, okay. 00:26:06.25\00:26:07.71 But there are also some bad ones too out there. 00:26:07.94\00:26:09.88 So there is just either alright, right. 00:26:09.89\00:26:11.96 Alright let's go to number six, this is from 00:26:14.94\00:26:18.33 Debby in Indiana, okay. She says I take 00:26:18.34\00:26:21.23 Coumadin because I had a blood clot 00:26:21.24\00:26:23.55 in my lungs. What herbs should I avoid. 00:26:23.56\00:26:26.50 Okay Debby excellent question. 00:26:26.51\00:26:28.33 What is Coumadin and what do they use it for? 00:26:28.34\00:26:30.88 Okay Coumadin is a blood thinner, okay. 00:26:30.89\00:26:33.27 Some people even have called it rat poison Dan. 00:26:33.53\00:26:36.08 And it's used to help prevent clots 00:26:36.61\00:26:38.91 from forming in the body. 00:26:38.92\00:26:39.89 For instance a blood clot that goes through 00:26:39.90\00:26:41.41 lung is called pulmonary embolism, alright. 00:26:41.42\00:26:43.77 Remember the reporter that was in Iraq 00:26:43.78\00:26:45.66 that was in a tank all day. 00:26:45.67\00:26:46.93 Because his legs are like this, he got pulmonary 00:26:47.49\00:26:49.89 and that's why I'm gonna stretch 00:26:49.90\00:26:50.98 out my legs right now. 00:26:50.99\00:26:51.99 But, you know he got a blood clot it went to 00:26:52.00\00:26:54.22 his lungs he died immediately, right. 00:26:54.23\00:26:56.17 So, people have that it helps breaks up 00:26:56.72\00:26:58.74 the clots, clots anyone, so people with strokes 00:26:58.75\00:27:01.27 need to take certain types of Coumadin. 00:27:01.28\00:27:02.88 Well Coumadin is a blood thinner no one 00:27:02.89\00:27:04.36 likes to use it. I use it in a condition called 00:27:04.37\00:27:07.00 atrial fibrillation, okay but Coumadin is 00:27:07.01\00:27:09.38 one now there are many medications 00:27:09.39\00:27:11.43 that are not herbs especially that we 00:27:11.76\00:27:14.46 don't want to be using Coumadin. 00:27:14.47\00:27:15.74 There is too many to list. 00:27:15.75\00:27:16.75 You mean use with Coumadin? 00:27:16.76\00:27:18.18 No, we don't to use them, so any herb you might 00:27:18.19\00:27:20.45 be taking there is a big list of those 00:27:20.46\00:27:22.12 to look at, okay. To see which ones might be. 00:27:22.13\00:27:24.69 So the interaction between the two 00:27:24.70\00:27:26.29 are very dangerous. Right, so I think 00:27:26.30\00:27:28.18 that this field of integrative medicine 00:27:28.19\00:27:30.60 is very, very fascinating.
