Praise God for I am fearfully and wonderfully made! 00:00:35.43\00:00:39.58 This is what David proclaimed in a loud voice. 00:00:39.61\00:00:42.88 I want to welcome each one 00:00:42.91\00:00:43.99 of the viewers to "Wonderfully Made" 00:00:44.02\00:00:46.15 Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedules 00:00:46.18\00:00:49.38 to think about your health, and how God created you. 00:00:49.41\00:00:52.38 We have an exciting show today... 00:00:52.39\00:00:54.80 We're going to be talking about winning the war 00:00:54.83\00:00:57.38 with cardiovascular disease. 00:00:57.41\00:00:59.96 I'm so happy to have, as my guest here today, Dan Miller 00:00:59.99\00:01:02.97 Dan, welcome to "Wonderfully Made" 00:01:03.00\00:01:04.82 Nice to be here. 00:01:04.85\00:01:06.41 Tell me a little bit about this 00:01:06.44\00:01:07.90 "Heartwise Ministry" we've been working on... 00:01:07.93\00:01:10.03 Well Heartwise Ministry was basically something that 00:01:10.06\00:01:13.03 it was originated in 2005. 00:01:13.06\00:01:18.77 It was basically a natural creation from your books... 00:01:18.80\00:01:21.68 I should say. 00:01:21.71\00:01:22.80 It's a ministry that... the basic core of the ministry 00:01:22.83\00:01:29.40 their message is Truth, Love and Healing 00:01:29.43\00:01:34.51 Now, why did you set it up with truth, love and healing? 00:01:34.54\00:01:38.14 Is it a progression, or... 00:01:38.17\00:01:39.23 It IS a progression, I believe. 00:01:39.26\00:01:40.82 For instance, when you find truth, you go to the Bible, 00:01:40.85\00:01:46.31 and it's usually biblical... 00:01:46.34\00:01:48.26 When you find truth in medical fields, it's something that 00:01:48.27\00:01:56.05 you've searched for. 00:01:56.08\00:01:58.98 Once you've developed the truth of something, 00:01:58.99\00:02:01.34 then you go to the next step which would be love. 00:02:01.37\00:02:04.28 Love is something that comes natural, 00:02:04.31\00:02:06.15 and is a message from God. 00:02:06.18\00:02:10.83 And then you go to the healing process. 00:02:10.86\00:02:12.59 So it's a 3-step process, I believe. 00:02:12.62\00:02:14.83 So in this, we have to have truth 00:02:14.86\00:02:18.88 to have true healing, right? Right. 00:02:18.91\00:02:20.90 You know, I see so many myths out there about 00:02:20.93\00:02:23.61 cardiovascular disease every day... you know 00:02:23.64\00:02:25.78 This diet is better than that diet... 00:02:25.81\00:02:27.94 You can see the lies that are out there... Correct 00:02:27.97\00:02:30.07 And especially in the health care world, 00:02:30.10\00:02:31.75 and it's hard for some people 00:02:31.78\00:02:32.94 to sort of sort through this sometimes. 00:02:32.97\00:02:35.17 And it affects your whole life you know... Right 00:02:35.20\00:02:37.27 If what you know about your life is not the truth, 00:02:37.30\00:02:40.49 then, it's going to affect you in a negative manner 00:02:40.52\00:02:42.99 ...sooner or later, we all know that. 00:02:43.00\00:02:45.22 So this ministry really is dedicated, 00:02:45.23\00:02:48.17 not only to finding the truth in healthcare, 00:02:48.18\00:02:50.31 but finding the truth in life, 00:02:50.34\00:02:51.60 and the truth in the Scriptures as well. 00:02:51.63\00:02:55.75 So, I mean, there's a lot to be said for that... 00:02:55.78\00:02:57.74 and there's a group of people out there, I believe, that 00:02:57.75\00:03:00.07 are looking for this kind of a ministry to look at. 00:03:00.10\00:03:03.24 Now, we're talking about winning the war about 00:03:03.27\00:03:05.44 cardiovascular disease. Right. 00:03:05.47\00:03:07.05 I was reading something the other day, Jim 00:03:07.08\00:03:09.28 It's just some statistics that I'm going to throw out there 00:03:09.31\00:03:12.80 to you to see what you think about them... Okay 00:03:12.83\00:03:14.33 Spending on healthcare... Last year, in the United States 00:03:14.34\00:03:19.80 2.2 trillion dollars! 00:03:19.83\00:03:21.94 Now that's all healthcare all together, everything? Correct 00:03:21.97\00:03:24.56 Wow! That's a lot, a big number! 00:03:24.59\00:03:25.86 That's an amazing number. 00:03:25.89\00:03:27.23 In 2006, 900,000 heart attacks 00:03:27.26\00:03:32.32 Wow, that's just in the United States, right? Correct 00:03:32.35\00:03:35.89 Think of a city maybe the size of what... Atlanta? 00:03:35.92\00:03:38.68 Wow, 900,000... Everybody in Atlanta gets to 00:03:38.71\00:03:40.89 have a heart attack this year. That's incredible! 00:03:40.92\00:03:43.44 Out of those 900,000, 600,000 were new, 00:03:43.47\00:03:46.30 first ones... Okay Correct 00:03:46.33\00:03:48.81 300,000 of them were 2nd, 3rd, and 4th heart attacks. Wow 00:03:48.84\00:03:52.38 So that's interesting. That's staggering... 00:03:52.41\00:03:54.73 And out of the 900,000 heart attacks, 00:03:54.76\00:03:58.42 42% of these people died. 00:03:58.45\00:04:01.62 Wow, that's a lot of deaths. That's amazing! 00:04:01.65\00:04:04.11 You know, you would think a little bit about that 00:04:04.14\00:04:06.52 with all this going on, you would think that 00:04:06.53\00:04:08.33 you know, with that kind of money involved, 00:04:08.34\00:04:10.29 you would think the government and everyone 00:04:10.30\00:04:11.56 would be up in arms about fighting this disease 00:04:11.59\00:04:13.65 that's a lot more... You would think that but 00:04:13.68\00:04:15.26 it's probably not the truth. Wow 00:04:15.29\00:04:17.19 ...13 million around the world die of cardio disease every year 00:04:17.22\00:04:23.84 Every year... 13 million, Wow 00:04:23.87\00:04:26.17 Now I'm not really sure how to break those numbers down. 00:04:26.20\00:04:29.37 In the first half of the 21st century, 00:04:29.40\00:04:32.24 we're going to have an estimated 1 billion people die 00:04:32.27\00:04:36.28 of cardiac-related disease. 00:04:36.31\00:04:38.70 That's if we continue to have ... At the rate that we have 00:04:38.73\00:04:40.89 Well you know, our job here with Heartwise Ministries 00:04:40.92\00:04:44.01 is to slow that rate down. Correct 00:04:44.04\00:04:46.13 And through the truth part of our ministry, 00:04:46.16\00:04:49.09 that's what we're talking about. 00:04:49.12\00:04:51.50 Well that's why it's so exciting about winning the war 00:04:51.53\00:04:53.91 We just don't want to win a battle... 00:04:53.94\00:04:55.24 We want to win the war against cardiovascular disease. 00:04:55.27\00:04:57.73 It's a huge job... Okay 00:04:57.76\00:04:58.77 Well we have some questions from all over the world... We do! 00:04:58.81\00:05:01.68 Let's go to our first question Okay 00:05:01.71\00:05:05.45 Our first question is from Margaret in Texas. 00:05:05.48\00:05:09.13 She says, "My name is Margaret, but it could easily 00:05:09.16\00:05:12.78 have been Winnie the Worrier" Uh oh... 00:05:12.81\00:05:14.78 I think we both know somebody like that. 00:05:14.81\00:05:17.15 "Let me explain... When I was 8, my mom had a heart attack. 00:05:17.16\00:05:21.54 Her sister had a heart attack a few years later. 00:05:21.57\00:05:24.87 What can I do to lower my risks? 00:05:24.90\00:05:27.36 Well, the first thing, Winnie, you've already 00:05:27.39\00:05:29.14 done to lower the risk... 00:05:29.18\00:05:30.52 I mean Margaret... I called her Winnie the Worrier 00:05:30.55\00:05:33.27 SORRY! Margaret! 00:05:33.30\00:05:36.11 Margaret, the first thing you can do is recognize 00:05:36.14\00:05:38.66 that there is a problem... 00:05:38.69\00:05:39.76 Unless you understand the problem, 00:05:39.79\00:05:42.62 a solution cannot be developed. Correct 00:05:42.65\00:05:44.82 So we understand that there's a problem here... 00:05:44.85\00:05:46.99 There are several things that raise a person's risk 00:05:47.02\00:05:50.34 of having a heart attack. 00:05:50.37\00:05:51.66 There are some things we can't 00:05:51.70\00:05:52.94 do anything about... What would those be? 00:05:52.98\00:05:56.07 For instance, your genetics. Right 00:05:56.10\00:05:57.48 The genetic material... the DNA that passed down 00:05:57.49\00:05:59.73 from generation to generation 00:05:59.76\00:06:01.25 Sometimes it's weeks... 00:06:01.28\00:06:02.60 Sometimes we don't have enzymes that digest the material 00:06:02.63\00:06:05.58 I mean, the enzymes that have to do with cholesterol 00:06:05.61\00:06:09.97 but your genetics can predispose you. 00:06:09.98\00:06:11.77 Another thing we can't do is age... 00:06:11.78\00:06:13.19 Because as a person gets older, the chance of having 00:06:13.22\00:06:15.24 a heart attack goes up. Right 00:06:15.27\00:06:16.71 I've heard statistics, or percentages, I should say, 00:06:16.74\00:06:20.01 that 90% of all people create their own situation 00:06:20.04\00:06:26.10 And only 10% is purely genetic. Right 00:06:26.13\00:06:29.02 That's pretty astounding when you think about it. 00:06:29.05\00:06:31.01 They estimate that a lot of the heart attacks that are 00:06:31.04\00:06:33.55 happening... a lot of this number that happening 00:06:33.58\00:06:35.53 can be prevented. 00:06:35.56\00:06:37.32 Do you think that she is part of that 10%? 00:06:37.33\00:06:40.61 Well, I don't know... 00:06:40.64\00:06:41.80 You know, she might have genetics, she might not... 00:06:41.83\00:06:43.78 But, Margaret, a couple of other things... 00:06:43.81\00:06:45.42 Now you can't do anything about your genetics and your age 00:06:45.45\00:06:47.83 But the things you CAN do something about... 00:06:47.84\00:06:49.83 Let's talk about those. All right 00:06:49.86\00:06:51.70 Your cholesterol level... 00:06:51.73\00:06:53.60 The lower the cholesterol, the less risk you have of 00:06:53.63\00:06:55.87 having a heart attack, and cardiovascular disease. 00:06:55.88\00:06:57.85 What is cholesterol? 00:06:57.88\00:06:59.80 Cholesterol is a lipid which is a FAT 00:06:59.81\00:07:03.28 that we usually eat in our diet that gets deposited 00:07:03.31\00:07:06.45 inside our blood stream. 00:07:06.48\00:07:07.78 Specifically, in heart disease, it gets deposited inside the 00:07:07.79\00:07:10.73 arteries of the heart, develops plaques 00:07:10.76\00:07:12.96 ...this gradually can buildup inside the arteries 00:07:12.99\00:07:15.13 and then break loose. That's right 00:07:15.16\00:07:16.84 Can break loose, or it can cause a problem. 00:07:16.87\00:07:20.11 The next thing that Margaret can do is blood pressure... 00:07:20.14\00:07:23.71 Blood pressure is that internal pressure inside the vessels 00:07:23.74\00:07:27.26 that if it's high over long periods of time, 00:07:27.29\00:07:29.51 you can literally damage the inside of your vessels. 00:07:29.54\00:07:32.47 They call high blood pressure the silent killer. 00:07:32.50\00:07:35.66 You know why they call it the silent killer? No idea 00:07:35.69\00:07:37.37 Well, because some people don't even know 00:07:37.86\00:07:40.00 they have high blood pressure... 00:07:40.03\00:07:41.04 because they never get it checked! Right 00:07:41.07\00:07:42.38 Never get it checked! 00:07:42.41\00:07:44.48 I think men are the worst examples of this. 00:07:44.51\00:07:47.19 They can go on for years 00:07:47.22\00:07:48.88 and years and they never get a physical... 00:07:48.91\00:07:50.25 You know, someone might say... Well you ought to get it checked 00:07:50.28\00:07:51.96 And it's been up for years and years! 00:07:52.00\00:07:53.09 So would you say, even if you don't go to the doctor, 00:07:53.12\00:07:55.18 and get a physical, would it be beneficial to you 00:07:55.22\00:07:57.25 to stop in the mall if they're having a blood pressure check 00:07:57.28\00:07:59.64 and have that done at least? I sure would! 00:07:59.65\00:08:01.48 Now, most people take their car in to get it looked at 00:08:01.51\00:08:05.26 every so often... get the oil changed 00:08:05.29\00:08:07.11 I mean how much more important 00:08:07.14\00:08:08.97 is your body... than your heart check? 00:08:09.01\00:08:11.67 I think I would get it checked, you know, get my 00:08:11.71\00:08:13.52 blood pressure checked... that nature. 00:08:13.55\00:08:15.60 So Margaret, there are 2 things right there... 00:08:15.63\00:08:17.53 We can work on our high blood pressure, 00:08:17.56\00:08:20.49 we can work on the cholesterol... 00:08:20.52\00:08:22.14 The other thing is smoking. 00:08:22.17\00:08:23.47 I think everyone knows that smoking raises the risk 00:08:23.50\00:08:27.41 of having a heart attack. Right 00:08:27.44\00:08:29.66 There are lots of dangerous chemicals in cigarettes 00:08:29.69\00:08:33.12 that can raise our risk. 00:08:33.15\00:08:34.33 In fact, it's been estimated that if you can 00:08:34.36\00:08:36.08 quit smoking cigarettes, you've lowered your risk 00:08:36.11\00:08:39.18 of having a heart attack 50%... Right 00:08:39.21\00:08:42.52 How about the fact that she's a worrier? 00:08:42.55\00:08:44.36 She even named herself "Winnie the Worrier" here. 00:08:44.39\00:08:47.84 Yeah, and what worry does, is worry raises your 00:08:47.87\00:08:51.37 stress level. 00:08:51.40\00:08:52.73 And we know that bodies are under stress... 00:08:52.76\00:08:54.89 their chemistry changes. Right 00:08:54.92\00:08:57.70 Specifically, the level of stress hormones 00:08:57.73\00:09:01.74 increase dramatically. 00:09:01.77\00:09:02.85 The stress hormones might be called adrenalin or epinephrine. 00:09:02.88\00:09:05.93 Cortisol is another one, aldosterone... These all go up. 00:09:05.96\00:09:09.22 Growth hormone goes up. 00:09:10.19\00:09:11.28 When these go up, you get negative chemical reactions 00:09:11.31\00:09:13.72 You start to store cholesterol. 00:09:13.75\00:09:15.26 So chronic worrying, and stress is not helping anything 00:09:15.29\00:09:18.57 .. affects you in a real manner, and not just a perceived manner. 00:09:18.60\00:09:22.39 And later on, we're going to talk a little bit, Margaret, 00:09:22.42\00:09:24.67 about ways that we can lower that stress level too. 00:09:24.70\00:09:27.48 Now, other things that we can lower the risk 00:09:27.51\00:09:30.18 that you have control over. 00:09:30.21\00:09:31.22 You know, you want to be one of these that are not 00:09:31.25\00:09:33.74 in the 10% that do have heart attacks. 00:09:33.77\00:09:37.30 Obesity... Obesity, inactivity 00:09:37.33\00:09:40.72 That's associated with a higher rate of heart attacks 00:09:40.75\00:09:43.22 ...it changes your chemistry for the bad too 00:09:43.23\00:09:45.59 And lastly, lastly before we move on... is diabetes 00:09:45.62\00:09:49.58 People that have diabetes, it affects the blood vessels. 00:09:49.61\00:09:52.52 They're more prone to have heart attacks, stroke and 00:09:52.55\00:09:55.06 cardiovascular disease. 00:09:55.09\00:09:56.50 So there's a whole host of things here, Dan 00:09:56.53\00:09:59.29 But you know, a lot of people worry a lot... They do 00:09:59.32\00:10:01.64 You know, they worry about it... 00:10:01.67\00:10:02.90 And sometimes that worry, years and years out, 00:10:02.91\00:10:05.30 it creates negative coping habits... 00:10:05.33\00:10:09.27 And your worried, you're stressed, so what do you do? 00:10:09.30\00:10:10.97 You know, some people SMOKE... 00:10:11.00\00:10:12.44 We don't, in the United States, take care of our stress, 00:10:12.45\00:10:16.54 and worry in the manner that other countries do, for instance 00:10:16.57\00:10:20.05 We get in bad habits. 00:10:20.08\00:10:21.10 Some people snack all the time. 00:10:21.13\00:10:23.13 Yeah, some countries have a nap in the afternoon... Right 00:10:23.16\00:10:26.17 And those are some things we should start looking into 00:10:26.20\00:10:28.22 I think to lower this rate. 00:10:28.25\00:10:29.48 But I hope that, Margaret in Texas, 00:10:29.51\00:10:31.61 I hope those suggestions are some things that you can do 00:10:31.64\00:10:34.55 to lower your risk of having cardiovascular disease. 00:10:34.58\00:10:37.92 All right... let's go to #2. 00:10:37.95\00:10:41.65 This is from Frank in New York City or at least N.Y. 00:10:41.68\00:10:45.44 "My bypass surgery was 5 years ago... 00:10:45.47\00:10:48.80 My cholesterol is good. " 00:10:48.81\00:10:50.70 "I exercise every day for at least 30 minutes. " 00:10:50.73\00:10:53.69 That's good! That's very good. 00:10:53.72\00:10:55.20 "My blood pressure runs 120/70." 00:10:55.23\00:10:58.82 "Is there anything else you can think of that will lower my 00:10:58.85\00:11:02.38 risk of having more problems?" Okay... 00:11:02.41\00:11:04.86 Now, when you talk about cardiovascular disease, 00:11:04.89\00:11:08.26 we talk about the battle. 00:11:08.29\00:11:09.58 And it looks like Frank has already suffered the battle. 00:11:09.61\00:11:11.92 He has had bypass surgery. 00:11:11.95\00:11:13.64 But bypass surgery does not necessarily fix the problem. 00:11:13.67\00:11:17.15 Remember, it bypasses around the blockages. 00:11:17.18\00:11:19.45 The blockages are still there. 00:11:19.46\00:11:21.55 Now, we talked to Margaret last about the things 00:11:21.58\00:11:24.61 that she did to lower her risk factors. 00:11:24.64\00:11:27.36 It looks like Frank is doing those... 00:11:27.39\00:11:29.27 But there are other things that... 00:11:29.30\00:11:30.92 What can I think of that would help him more... 00:11:30.95\00:11:32.99 Well, stress... You know, we've talked about stress. 00:11:33.03\00:11:37.17 Well, what are things that a person can do to lower stress? 00:11:37.20\00:11:41.04 Well, you know, I think there are many different things 00:11:41.07\00:11:46.03 and what's interesting about stress is what might work for 00:11:46.04\00:11:49.17 YOU, might not work for ME. Right 00:11:49.20\00:11:52.25 A lot of people, just real soft music will lower their stress. 00:11:52.28\00:11:57.44 A lot of people think exercise has a big benefit... For sure 00:11:57.47\00:12:01.61 I would personally think a lot of us dissipate our stress 00:12:01.64\00:12:07.57 through the way we eat. 00:12:07.58\00:12:08.99 Certain foods make us very comfortable... Right 00:12:09.02\00:12:12.50 In doing that, you kind of compound the problem 00:12:12.53\00:12:16.23 that you're already trying to alleviate though... 00:12:16.26\00:12:18.26 So there are good ways to alleviate stress, 00:12:18.29\00:12:20.33 and I think there are bad ways to alleviate stress. 00:12:20.36\00:12:22.78 Well, and Frank, in talking about stress, 00:12:22.81\00:12:25.51 one of the things that I want to point you back to 00:12:25.54\00:12:28.04 is the Bible... Correct, very good point! 00:12:28.08\00:12:29.38 You know, one of the best treatments for stress is 00:12:29.42\00:12:32.74 the God of the Universe worked 6 days, and what did He do? 00:12:32.78\00:12:36.44 He rested... He rested. 00:12:36.47\00:12:37.90 How many of us get rest? 00:12:37.93\00:12:40.80 For instance... true rest... Yeah 00:12:40.83\00:12:42.50 If you jumped off a building, Dan, 00:12:42.53\00:12:44.39 okay, this is a natural law... 00:12:44.42\00:12:46.18 You would break when you hit the bottom, wouldn't you? 00:12:46.21\00:12:48.47 Yes... whether you believed it or not. Right 00:12:48.48\00:12:51.39 When we violate God's natural laws, for instance, 00:12:51.42\00:12:55.28 the law of rest; 00:12:55.31\00:12:56.45 when we violate that natural law... we're affected. Right 00:12:56.48\00:12:59.33 Whether we believe it or not! Correct 00:12:59.36\00:13:00.85 Our chemistry changes inside, the stress hormones go up, 00:13:00.88\00:13:04.89 and we predispose ourself to having chemical problems inside. 00:13:04.92\00:13:08.81 So that's one thing... Rest 00:13:08.84\00:13:11.38 I would say that, also being in the Bible 00:13:11.41\00:13:15.66 through prayer, and the Holy Spirit being able to 00:13:15.69\00:13:19.58 come into your life and change you from the inside out... 00:13:19.61\00:13:22.78 I think is a huge thing to deal with stress though. 00:13:22.81\00:13:26.01 Now another thing that we talk about stress, 00:13:26.04\00:13:27.87 at nighttime, you know our bodies are made to rest at night 00:13:27.90\00:13:31.72 When we don't get good rest at night, whether it be 00:13:31.73\00:13:34.95 we stay up too late eating food, 00:13:34.98\00:13:37.20 we're saturated by stimulants like the internet, 00:13:37.23\00:13:40.62 television, telephones, caffeine yeah, cell phones, beepers 00:13:40.65\00:13:44.67 Everything is going off. 00:13:44.70\00:13:45.94 We don't naturally rest... 00:13:45.97\00:13:47.22 And you've heard of the circadian rhythms that we have 00:13:47.25\00:13:49.32 Yes... Those get disrupted, guess what? 00:13:49.35\00:13:52.17 It puts MORE stress on our body... 00:13:52.20\00:13:54.20 The next thing happens, these stress hormones, the epinephrine 00:13:54.23\00:13:57.66 the cortisol, all these go up again, and disease sets in. 00:13:57.69\00:14:00.65 And it's an unending circle if you don't get control of it. 00:14:00.68\00:14:03.75 And the statistics that you quoted earlier 00:14:03.78\00:14:05.76 well, that's why we have such high statistics 00:14:05.79\00:14:08.10 because our chemistry is changing... 00:14:08.13\00:14:09.90 We're not taking care of the insides, 00:14:09.93\00:14:11.33 and we don't even recognize what we're doing. Correct 00:14:11.36\00:14:14.06 Now, I want to get back to Frank... 00:14:14.09\00:14:15.93 There are a couple of other things, Frank 00:14:15.96\00:14:17.20 that I could think of that might help you. 00:14:17.23\00:14:19.77 And we talked about rest... Water! 00:14:19.80\00:14:22.06 I think water lowers your risks 00:14:22.09\00:14:24.05 ...70% of your body is water. 00:14:24.08\00:14:25.79 And I heart something to the effect that a huge amount of 00:14:25.82\00:14:29.82 people in the United States are chronically dehydrated... 00:14:29.85\00:14:32.99 Is that correct? Right 00:14:33.02\00:14:34.50 And I've read a study recently that said up to 70-75% 00:14:34.53\00:14:37.26 are chronically dehydrated. 00:14:37.27\00:14:38.35 We're drinking Starbucks... Right 00:14:38.38\00:14:40.62 We're drinking Cokes, caffeines 00:14:40.65\00:14:43.12 But we're not drinking water. 00:14:43.15\00:14:45.42 In the Garden of Eden, for instance, 00:14:45.45\00:14:47.85 you didn't see a Starbucks, or a Coke machine out there. 00:14:47.88\00:14:50.61 They drank water... 00:14:50.65\00:14:51.67 It seems to me like water, from a commonsense standpoint, 00:14:51.70\00:14:54.07 that water would be a natural agent... a washing agent 00:14:54.10\00:14:59.41 you know, to clean your system out with... 00:14:59.44\00:15:01.88 And you think about all the chemical reactions in the body 00:15:01.91\00:15:04.47 depend on water. 00:15:04.50\00:15:06.10 And without water, everything can go haywire. 00:15:06.13\00:15:08.51 Now, for instance, if you were walking in a desert, 00:15:08.54\00:15:11.12 okay... and don't get enough water, 00:15:11.15\00:15:12.70 does your mind work right? 00:15:12.71\00:15:14.04 I don't think so, no. No 00:15:14.07\00:15:15.64 You start seeing things. Right 00:15:15.67\00:15:16.74 So, the chemistry depends on water... 00:15:16.77\00:15:18.98 And without water, it puts stress on the body 00:15:19.01\00:15:21.77 Stress on the body does all these bad chemical things. 00:15:21.80\00:15:24.90 So those are some things that also... 00:15:24.93\00:15:27.33 Now, one last thing that I think would help is 00:15:27.36\00:15:29.09 you've heard of antioxidants... 00:15:29.12\00:15:30.86 I think those lower your risk. 00:15:30.87\00:15:32.86 We've also heard about being happy and laughing... Right 00:15:32.89\00:15:37.22 I think that's another biblical... 00:15:37.25\00:15:39.18 And being happy and laughing does what to your system? 00:15:39.21\00:15:41.49 Well, in Proverbs, it says, 00:15:41.50\00:15:42.85 "A merry heart doth good, like medicine. " Right 00:15:42.88\00:15:45.44 We know that people that are laughing and happy, 00:15:45.47\00:15:47.70 they make higher endorphins. 00:15:47.73\00:15:49.76 So get out there and have a good belly laugh! 00:15:49.79\00:15:52.06 Don't take it so seriously. Be happy! 00:15:52.09\00:15:54.28 So I hope those are a couple of things, Frank, 00:15:54.31\00:15:56.43 that might help lower your risk of having... 00:15:56.46\00:15:58.34 Remember, we're fighting the war, Frank 00:15:58.37\00:16:00.16 And if we can get at what caused it in the beginning 00:16:00.19\00:16:02.14 stress, rest, diet... 00:16:02.17\00:16:04.24 we have a chance of not having to fight the battles 00:16:04.27\00:16:06.60 Right... Very good. 00:16:06.63\00:16:07.94 All right... #3 A question from Joanne 00:16:07.97\00:16:13.56 in Fresno, California Okay 00:16:13.59\00:16:15.11 "I read your book "Heartbeat"... 00:16:15.14\00:16:18.68 "It was easy to read, and talked about acute and chronic 00:16:18.71\00:16:22.99 treatment for heart disease. " 00:16:23.02\00:16:24.78 "Why did you divide treatment up?" 00:16:24.81\00:16:27.10 "Would it be easier to talk about treatment all together?" 00:16:27.13\00:16:30.07 What's the difference between 00:16:30.08\00:16:31.65 acute and chronic... to start out with? 00:16:31.68\00:16:33.29 Acute is something, Dan, that needs to be done right away 00:16:34.15\00:16:36.92 right now... while you're having the heart attack. Right 00:16:36.95\00:16:39.86 If you start having a heart attack right now, 00:16:39.87\00:16:42.18 here on the set... Okay, of 3ABN 00:16:42.21\00:16:44.27 All the camera people are going to come and help. Okay 00:16:44.30\00:16:46.72 Hopefully, you'll be the one to help. 00:16:46.75\00:16:47.88 We'll be here helping you. 00:16:47.91\00:16:49.16 We're going to get the heart going again... 00:16:49.19\00:16:50.68 Get the blood flowing. 00:16:50.71\00:16:51.80 We're going to deal with the problem. 00:16:51.83\00:16:52.93 We might have to take you to the hospital. 00:16:52.96\00:16:54.29 We might have to do an angioplasty or stent 00:16:54.32\00:16:55.77 But we're not going to sit there and talk about STRESS, 00:16:55.80\00:16:58.30 and days of rest, and your diet... at that point. 00:16:58.33\00:17:03.81 I think modern medicine is great for acute care. Right 00:17:03.84\00:17:07.79 But for winning the war... 00:17:07.82\00:17:10.40 That's a totally separate issue... Exactly 00:17:10.43\00:17:13.05 And you have to sort of divide it up 00:17:13.08\00:17:14.81 Because, you know, the battle is over 00:17:14.84\00:17:17.74 I think medicines have their place. Correct 00:17:17.77\00:17:19.96 But lifestyle change and getting at what caused it 00:17:19.99\00:17:22.40 For instance, if the cause of your heart attack was stress 00:17:22.43\00:17:24.69 then we would work on ways to lower the stress level. 00:17:24.72\00:17:27.83 And we'd have to determine what 00:17:27.86\00:17:30.20 the stress is... whether it was lack of sleep 00:17:30.24\00:17:31.75 Let's say that you had a guilty conscience because your mind 00:17:31.79\00:17:34.44 wasn't free from some of the things or untruths 00:17:34.47\00:17:38.11 or anything that damages the mind could have caused this. 00:17:38.14\00:17:40.56 So that's what we try to do. 00:17:40.59\00:17:41.62 We try to focus on well, what caused 00:17:41.65\00:17:43.48 the problem in the first place. 00:17:43.51\00:17:45.12 And if we can get at THAT, we've won the war. 00:17:45.15\00:17:47.57 So then at that point, what you're talking about 00:17:47.60\00:17:49.79 is sitting down and creating a game plan... Right 00:17:49.82\00:17:52.34 And that's why I divide acute and chronic 00:17:52.37\00:17:54.26 because there are so many people... 00:17:54.29\00:17:56.46 For instance, they go one route or the other... 00:17:56.47\00:17:58.22 They fight the acute battle, and then they don't 00:17:58.25\00:18:00.70 think... Well, most people think 00:18:00.71\00:18:02.81 to quit smoking cigarettes, but a lot of people don't think 00:18:02.84\00:18:05.81 "Well what did I do in the first place 00:18:05.84\00:18:07.13 to cause this problem to happen. " 00:18:07.16\00:18:08.87 And that's why I divided the acute and chronic care. 00:18:08.90\00:18:17.20 #4, Jim, I'm sorry... Okay 00:18:17.23\00:18:18.52 "One of the problems I have is stress" 00:18:18.53\00:18:22.10 Once again, we've got a question about stress... 00:18:22.11\00:18:24.72 so, obviously, everybody is stressed out. 00:18:24.75\00:18:26.81 "My doctors have tried everything" 00:18:26.84\00:18:29.02 "My job, kids, wife and life in general, nothing seems to help" 00:18:29.05\00:18:34.41 "Any suggestions?" 00:18:34.44\00:18:36.16 This is from somebody in Pennsylvania... 00:18:36.19\00:18:38.41 they withheld their name. 00:18:38.42\00:18:39.87 Well, to my friends in Pennsylvania, 00:18:39.90\00:18:42.15 I think we've sort of touched on some of these 00:18:42.16\00:18:44.42 treatments of stress... 00:18:44.45\00:18:45.93 and I think, for me, getting back to the source of truth 00:18:45.96\00:18:50.76 You know, you hear so much out there... 00:18:50.79\00:18:52.47 the treatment for stress now... 00:18:52.50\00:18:54.18 Some people do relaxation techniques... 00:18:54.21\00:18:56.36 Some people take medications 00:18:56.39\00:18:57.72 You've heard of Valium and Xanax 00:18:57.75\00:18:59.82 But if we get back to the Bible 00:18:59.85\00:19:01.76 Okay, get back to the Bible... 00:19:01.79\00:19:03.32 What the Bible teaches about stress... 00:19:03.35\00:19:05.56 Why did God give us these days of rest? 00:19:05.59\00:19:08.51 Why did God make us a good diet? 00:19:08.54\00:19:10.20 I think getting back to the Bible, and getting back to 00:19:10.23\00:19:12.68 your spiritual side... that's going to help us find the TRUTH. 00:19:12.71\00:19:16.18 And the truth sort of frees us up from some of these 00:19:16.21\00:19:18.71 things that are causing the stress... Right 00:19:18.72\00:19:20.70 And then it can lead us to real healing. 00:19:20.73\00:19:22.84 That why, you know, when we talk about Heartwise, 00:19:22.87\00:19:25.47 we start with truth... 00:19:25.50\00:19:26.96 we move to love, and then we move to healing. 00:19:26.99\00:19:31.06 It's a natural progression from one thing to another. 00:19:31.09\00:19:33.85 In the Book of John, what's that text... 00:19:33.88\00:19:35.86 "Ye shall know the truth... and the truth shall set you free" 00:19:35.89\00:19:38.27 Right, the truth sets you free. 00:19:38.30\00:19:40.04 The truth is knowledge about God. Right 00:19:40.07\00:19:42.38 Because when we know God, 00:19:42.41\00:19:43.70 God sort of teaches us what love is... 00:19:43.73\00:19:46.52 And everything sort of stems from that. 00:19:46.55\00:19:49.21 It seems like that was His greatest command in 00:19:49.24\00:19:51.42 the New Testament. 00:19:51.45\00:19:52.43 They've tried everything else here... 00:19:52.46\00:19:55.08 So I think that you are hitting it right on the head 00:19:55.11\00:19:59.87 whenever you say that the spiritual aspect of prayer 00:19:59.90\00:20:02.65 and asking God to help with the situation. 00:20:02.68\00:20:05.73 A lot of people, I find, when they talk about 00:20:05.76\00:20:07.51 cardiovascular disease, and we see the prevalence of it 00:20:07.54\00:20:10.61 ...how it all over America, and all over the world. 00:20:10.64\00:20:14.97 You don't hear it commonly to see a treatment for this... 00:20:15.00\00:20:17.62 is getting into the Bible. 00:20:17.65\00:20:19.04 Getting God to heal you. 00:20:19.07\00:20:21.11 It's not a popular way to do things. 00:20:21.14\00:20:25.09 But you can change your chemistry through 00:20:25.12\00:20:27.02 that healing process too. 00:20:27.05\00:20:28.37 You know, I believe that God heals people acutely 00:20:28.40\00:20:31.14 ...You know, like raises people from the dead... instantly. 00:20:31.17\00:20:33.98 But another way, I think, He heals us is slowly. 00:20:34.01\00:20:36.86 By giving you the power through that relationship 00:20:36.89\00:20:40.18 ...getting a little truth And change 00:20:40.21\00:20:41.55 having that love in your life, and the next thing you do, 00:20:41.58\00:20:44.47 you're able to make a better decision! 00:20:44.50\00:20:46.13 But say you're a smoker... through the healing process... 00:20:46.16\00:20:47.85 Right, you're able to quit smoking. 00:20:47.88\00:20:49.39 Were you able to exercise every day... 00:20:49.42\00:20:51.19 Or learn how to rest better. 00:20:51.22\00:20:52.79 I've had a patient recently from New York City... 00:20:52.82\00:20:55.99 that he never was able to take rest. 00:20:56.02\00:20:59.11 And just learning the principle of resting and vacations 00:20:59.14\00:21:01.86 ...his chemistry improved dramatically. 00:21:01.89\00:21:04.32 So there's lots of ways to do that... 00:21:04.35\00:21:06.12 but I want to try to point people... 00:21:06.15\00:21:07.70 One of the things I want to do is look at your spiritual life 00:21:07.73\00:21:10.46 ...Get back in the Bible 00:21:10.49\00:21:11.72 Pray that God will help you find out the source 00:21:11.73\00:21:14.22 of your stress and He will be the real treatment of the stress 00:21:14.25\00:21:18.26 Okay, we have another question... 00:21:18.29\00:21:19.28 Okay, this is from Rhonda in Indiana... 00:21:19.31\00:21:22.53 "A book I read recently had a ton of suggestions on 00:21:22.56\00:21:26.85 how to take care of your heart. " 00:21:26.88\00:21:28.47 "Intellectually, I know all this is true... 00:21:28.48\00:21:31.38 but making the change seems impossible to me. " 00:21:31.41\00:21:34.65 "Am I alone in this?" 00:21:34.68\00:21:36.54 Wow, Rhonda, that's a question I see a lot... 00:21:36.57\00:21:40.92 is people know, intellectually, what they need to be doing 00:21:40.95\00:21:44.67 For instance, people know that they should be on an 00:21:44.70\00:21:47.01 exercise program. 00:21:47.04\00:21:48.65 And people know when they're not eating right... 00:21:48.68\00:21:51.35 that they might be eating differently. 00:21:51.38\00:21:53.93 I think people know that, if they're in a stressful job, 00:21:53.94\00:21:56.74 they need to change that. Right 00:21:56.77\00:21:57.91 I mean, this is common sense, related stuff. 00:21:57.94\00:22:00.91 It goes back to your example of 00:22:00.94\00:22:04.89 somebody falling off a building. Right 00:22:04.92\00:22:09.05 It's a law... but "Am I alone in this feeling?" 00:22:09.08\00:22:11.29 No, Rhonda, you're not alone. 00:22:11.32\00:22:12.66 A lot of people feel this way. 00:22:12.69\00:22:14.49 Now, what can we do about it? 00:22:14.52\00:22:16.96 Now how do we actually take these principles, 00:22:16.99\00:22:20.08 that we've talked about, to lower the risk of 00:22:20.11\00:22:21.87 cardiovascular disease 00:22:21.90\00:22:23.45 How do we actually start an exercise program? 00:22:23.48\00:22:26.61 Where does that ability come from? 00:22:26.64\00:22:28.66 Where does the ability to eat a little bit better come from... 00:22:28.69\00:22:31.24 Or drink more water? 00:22:31.27\00:22:32.44 How does that happen? 00:22:32.47\00:22:33.71 That's a great question. 00:22:33.74\00:22:37.66 Yeah and in the end, we all know where it comes from. Right 00:22:37.69\00:22:41.03 And I think it's getting God to take control of the mind. 00:22:41.06\00:22:45.53 The mind is a very powerful thing... 00:22:45.56\00:22:47.32 You know, it says... "Create in me a new heart" 00:22:47.35\00:22:50.54 heart which is a new mind. 00:22:50.57\00:22:51.81 God wants to be in our mind and take control of our thoughts 00:22:51.84\00:22:54.89 and our actions. Everything we do... 00:22:54.92\00:22:56.88 And when he does that, then we have a chance 00:22:56.91\00:22:59.34 of changing our behavior. Right 00:22:59.37\00:23:01.43 Now, you know, you think, "Well, you know, 00:23:01.46\00:23:04.32 "I try to do these things" 00:23:04.36\00:23:05.40 Now, I see a lot of people that they try to make changes 00:23:05.43\00:23:07.88 all at once, and then when they make a mistake, 00:23:07.91\00:23:10.52 they fall off the wagon! 00:23:10.55\00:23:12.16 They beat themselves up! Yeah 00:23:12.17\00:23:13.46 ...With guilt and everything else connected with that. 00:23:13.49\00:23:15.60 "I'm not going to do this again, you know, I'm done with this" 00:23:15.63\00:23:17.79 I think all of us have gone through the guilt part of that. 00:23:17.82\00:23:20.03 But you now, one thing that I try to point people to is... 00:23:20.04\00:23:23.05 Remember that God... God loves us 00:23:23.06\00:23:25.99 He loves us more than we could imagine. 00:23:26.02\00:23:28.23 You know, He just doesn't want us to hurt ourselves. 00:23:28.26\00:23:30.56 With the things that He points out that's dangerous 00:23:30.59\00:23:33.22 When we break the natural laws, we hurt ourselves. 00:23:33.25\00:23:35.38 But as we get to know God, and see how much He loves us, 00:23:35.41\00:23:38.19 and wants to work with us, 00:23:38.22\00:23:39.65 and forgives us and takes us over. 00:23:39.69\00:23:41.54 Then, as we make one decision at a time, 00:23:41.58\00:23:44.20 it gets a little bit easier. Correct 00:23:44.23\00:23:46.43 Now, let me give you an example here... 00:23:46.44\00:23:48.35 I had a patient who came in the other day 00:23:48.38\00:23:51.24 and she wasn't doing very many things right. 00:23:51.27\00:23:54.29 And, I didn't want to hit her with everything at once. 00:23:54.32\00:23:56.91 I said, well, let's just start somewhere 00:23:56.94\00:23:58.87 But where do you start with... 00:23:58.90\00:24:00.27 Well, I want you to just pray... 00:24:00.30\00:24:01.63 Pray that God will come into your life. 00:24:01.66\00:24:03.49 ...And start reading the Bible... the source of truth. 00:24:03.52\00:24:06.38 And then the next thing is... 00:24:06.41\00:24:07.93 Maybe try not to eat big at night. 00:24:07.96\00:24:10.85 And let's get back together in a month. 00:24:10.88\00:24:13.55 So she did that for a month. 00:24:13.58\00:24:15.16 You know, she made that decision... okay 00:24:15.19\00:24:17.16 She started looking for truth 00:24:17.19\00:24:19.14 God started responding to her, 00:24:19.17\00:24:21.27 and she could do that. 00:24:21.30\00:24:22.43 And she said, "Yeah, I feel better. " 00:24:22.46\00:24:23.55 I said, "Well, the next thing, let's start exercising" 00:24:23.58\00:24:25.72 You don't have to do everything at once, but do this 00:24:25.75\00:24:27.09 So, through a series of slow changes, 00:24:27.76\00:24:31.22 she has changed her chemistry. 00:24:31.25\00:24:33.58 And that goes right back to the game plan that we talked about. 00:24:33.61\00:24:37.22 And that's why I don't think... 00:24:37.25\00:24:38.90 You know, I think the spiritual life, in treating 00:24:38.93\00:24:41.11 any chronic disease, is so vital 00:24:41.14\00:24:44.04 and imperative... It's very, very important 00:24:44.07\00:24:45.48 Because this is what changes your body's chemistry... 00:24:45.52\00:24:48.26 is when you have that freedom... 00:24:48.29\00:24:49.83 when you're able to love... 00:24:49.86\00:24:52.12 when you're able to feel that peace. 00:24:52.15\00:24:53.73 For instance, is it in Hebrews it talks about resting in God? 00:24:53.74\00:24:58.25 Yes... Hebrews 4:4, wasn't it? That seems to me like that is 00:24:58.28\00:25:02.76 It's that rest, that peace you get... 00:25:02.79\00:25:04.31 And when you have that peace, ... Your life changes 00:25:04.32\00:25:07.57 And your chemistry changes with it... Right 00:25:07.60\00:25:10.10 Now, think about, if I were the enemy, 00:25:10.13\00:25:12.68 what would I do? 00:25:12.71\00:25:14.44 I would create so much stressful situations, doubt, guilt 00:25:14.45\00:25:20.41 You know, people believing that they're not saved 00:25:20.44\00:25:22.17 ...that God doesn't love them. 00:25:22.20\00:25:23.55 I would have the internet and TV bombarding me with 00:25:23.56\00:25:26.35 lies about healthcare. 00:25:26.38\00:25:27.69 I would have all these other things to sort of make me feel 00:25:27.72\00:25:30.45 discouraged, so I didn't feel I'd do enough 00:25:30.48\00:25:32.02 and then I would want a society to numb my senses 00:25:32.05\00:25:34.52 so I wouldn't feel this way anymore... And then it goes 00:25:34.56\00:25:36.63 right back to where Heartwise Ministries is concerned 00:25:36.67\00:25:38.70 And, you know, people have to find the truth for themselves. 00:25:39.65\00:25:44.75 You know, I can't say, "This is true and you believe it" 00:25:44.78\00:25:47.07 You have to find it for yourself. 00:25:47.08\00:25:48.05 You have to go look for it yourself... Right 00:25:48.08\00:25:49.75 And we have a great textbook for that in the Bible. Yes we do 00:25:49.78\00:25:54.06 Which one are we on now? 00:25:54.09\00:25:55.82 Let's see, we're on #6 Okay 00:25:55.86\00:25:57.55 This is from Tom in Missouri... Okay 00:25:57.58\00:25:59.83 And this time, I have to break up a little bit because it's 00:25:59.86\00:26:01.96 a long question. 00:26:01.99\00:26:03.25 "The other day, I was channel-hopping and saw 00:26:03.28\00:26:05.58 you and Dan Miller talking about rest. " 00:26:05.61\00:26:07.65 "You seem like regular guys. " 00:26:07.68\00:26:10.51 "What you said made sense to me. " 00:26:10.54\00:26:12.93 "No one seems to listen to me when I go to the doctor" 00:26:12.96\00:26:16.75 "They just want to write a prescription 00:26:16.78\00:26:19.77 and send me on my way. " 00:26:19.80\00:26:21.52 "I am a trucker and at the age of 45." 00:26:21.55\00:26:26.42 "I want to stay away from pills. " 00:26:26.45\00:26:28.21 "I know I'm rambling, my question is this"... 00:26:28.24\00:26:33.07 "Why do doctors just want to give you a pill?" 00:26:33.10\00:26:36.46 I know what Jim feels like. 00:26:36.49\00:26:38.47 Yeah, I woke up one morning and felt like I was that 00:26:38.50\00:26:40.50 famous singer from Memphis... 00:26:40.53\00:26:41.70 Was it... Oh, Elvis! Yeah! 00:26:41.73\00:26:44.08 You know, I mean, I was to the point where I just 00:26:44.11\00:26:46.61 was taking a pill for everything. 00:26:46.62\00:26:48.12 And it got to the point where finally we sat down, 00:26:48.15\00:26:51.91 or I sat down with my doctor and told him that 00:26:51.94\00:26:54.39 it's really a concern to me, and we sat down and 00:26:54.42\00:26:58.34 talked about it. 00:26:58.37\00:26:59.60 We talked about... made a game plan just like you 00:26:59.63\00:27:02.82 were talking about for your patient 00:27:02.85\00:27:04.98 And slowly, he drops back the prescription, 00:27:05.01\00:27:10.34 and so on and so forth, so you can't just stop 00:27:10.37\00:27:12.70 taking your pills just cold turkey... Right 00:27:12.73\00:27:15.31 You do have to have a game plan. 00:27:15.34\00:27:17.43 If my doctor would not sit down with me and discuss these things 00:27:17.46\00:27:23.67 in a logical manner, I would not continue. 00:27:23.70\00:27:26.91 Well, back to his question 00:27:26.94\00:27:28.00 A lot of reasons people don't listen... 00:27:28.03\00:27:31.68 I mean, very few people listen like they should... 00:27:31.71\00:27:33.96 And I don't know if this is your case, 00:27:33.99\00:27:35.40 but one of the things we want to do is listen to people 00:27:35.43\00:27:37.71 Meet them where they're at. 00:27:37.74\00:27:39.21 And we want to learn to love them. 00:27:39.24\00:27:41.08 You know, love them, and figure out... out of love, 00:27:41.11\00:27:43.22 how to successfully change their chemistry. 00:27:43.25\00:27:46.10 And one of the things I try to do is think about your chemistry 00:27:46.13\00:27:49.08 How we can change your chemistry 00:27:49.11\00:27:50.98 from what it is when your sick, to a HEALING state. 00:27:51.01\00:27:54.35 And it goes back to those 3 things... 00:27:54.38\00:27:56.17 We want to teach you what's truth 00:27:56.18\00:27:57.44 We want to love you 00:27:57.47\00:27:58.59 and then, hopefully, you'll be healed. 00:27:58.62\00:28:00.58 We want to thank you and, hopefully, you will win the war 00:28:00.61\00:28:03.29 against cardiovascular disease. 00:28:03.33\00:28:05.37
