Hello, and welcome to Wonderfully Made. 00:00:35.05\00:00:37.67 My name is Dr. Christine Salter, 00:00:37.70\00:00:39.82 I am Board Certified in Family Medicine 00:00:39.85\00:00:42.26 in a private practice in St. Louis, Missouri. 00:00:42.29\00:00:44.75 Today we are going to be discussing a simple home remedy 00:00:44.78\00:00:48.97 called activated charcoal. 00:00:48.98\00:00:51.11 Mr. John Dinsley was our guest, has written a book about this. 00:00:51.14\00:00:54.84 Welcome John! 00:00:54.87\00:00:56.72 It is a real pleasure to be here with you today Dr. Salter, 00:00:56.75\00:00:59.68 I'm going to enjoy this. 00:00:59.71\00:01:01.53 Tell me, why did you write a book about charcoal? 00:01:01.56\00:01:04.96 Well, it is a good question, a lot of people do ask me that 00:01:05.00\00:01:08.16 and it goes back a few years, thirty some years ago. 00:01:08.19\00:01:10.76 Well not quite thirty. 00:01:10.79\00:01:11.76 I decided to hike around the world and on my adventures I 00:01:11.77\00:01:16.64 wandered into a small medical clinic in Guatemala 00:01:16.67\00:01:20.41 and there was a physician and his family who were working 00:01:20.44\00:01:23.60 and living there. 00:01:23.61\00:01:24.58 The Dr. Graves was a Board Certified California physician, 00:01:24.59\00:01:28.84 he was a graduate of Loma Linda University. 00:01:28.87\00:01:31.84 They had an amazing lifestyle which fascinated me, 00:01:31.87\00:01:35.29 one of the things that really captivated my attention was 00:01:35.32\00:01:37.90 their use of natural medicine, Natural Remedies. 00:01:37.93\00:01:42.20 Simple Remedies! - Simple, very simple! 00:01:42.23\00:01:44.33 You see a lot of the patients that came to the clinic 00:01:44.34\00:01:47.20 lived back in the mountains and they really didn't have 00:01:47.23\00:01:50.16 good access to the clinic and so the doctor tried to equip them 00:01:50.19\00:01:53.68 with things that they could use when they went back 00:01:53.69\00:01:55.92 to their villages. 00:01:55.93\00:01:56.90 So what impressed you about this particular village, 00:01:56.91\00:02:01.49 and what this physician was doing? 00:02:01.52\00:02:03.18 Well, again the natural medicine, 00:02:03.21\00:02:07.04 in the University I had an interest in Science and Biology 00:02:07.07\00:02:11.67 and I had taken a break from that, and I wanted to 00:02:11.70\00:02:15.05 explore the world. 00:02:15.09\00:02:16.11 But here was such a new idea to think about using 00:02:16.15\00:02:19.29 simple natural remedies. 00:02:19.32\00:02:21.38 I was used to going to a hospital, to an Emergency Room 00:02:21.41\00:02:26.12 visiting my doctor in a nice office back in America, 00:02:26.15\00:02:31.03 and this was a completely different setting 00:02:31.06\00:02:33.11 and one day I remember clearly, we were right along the 00:02:33.14\00:02:37.73 the Pan American Highway, and a bus stopped and these parents 00:02:37.76\00:02:41.90 came in rushing with this young child in their arms 00:02:41.93\00:02:45.56 obviously unconscious and convulsing. 00:02:45.59\00:02:48.57 The doctor immediately assessed the situation, 00:02:48.60\00:02:51.77 decided it was some form of food poisoning, 00:02:51.80\00:02:54.66 had the parents remove the blouse and he mixed up this 00:02:54.69\00:02:58.15 black stuff, this paste, and he smeared it all over her 00:02:58.16\00:03:02.24 belly and within 15 minutes the girl was resting quietly 00:03:02.27\00:03:08.12 and I thought Black Magic. 00:03:08.15\00:03:12.55 What was that black stuff? 00:03:12.58\00:03:14.87 Well, believe it or not, it was charcoal. 00:03:14.90\00:03:17.15 Now a lot of people say, so you mean charcoal briquettes? 00:03:17.18\00:03:21.04 No, it's not charcoal briquettes! 00:03:21.07\00:03:23.35 In this particular instance it was just ground up charcoal. 00:03:23.38\00:03:27.74 But what we are going to be talking about today is 00:03:27.75\00:03:31.71 medicinal charcoal, or activated gray charcoal. 00:03:31.74\00:03:34.46 Please tell our audience what you mean by activated charcoal. 00:03:34.49\00:03:38.92 Well, we start off with the raw product charcoal, 00:03:38.95\00:03:43.88 the leftovers from your camp fire, from your wood stove, 00:03:43.91\00:03:48.40 it is basically just carbon. 00:03:48.43\00:03:51.13 Most of the other products have been burned off, 00:03:51.16\00:03:53.66 it's been basically dehydrated and you have this charcoal. 00:03:53.67\00:03:59.23 Now when you activate charcoal you actually take that 00:03:59.26\00:04:02.79 raw product again and you heat it back up to a high temperature 00:04:02.82\00:04:07.12 say 800 degrees Celsius, and then you subject it to air 00:04:07.13\00:04:12.07 or maybe steam under pressure, and this erodes the 00:04:12.10\00:04:16.51 internal structure, the fabric of this charcoal particle, 00:04:16.54\00:04:20.29 and it gives us this tremendous surface area. 00:04:20.32\00:04:23.07 So that is what activated charcoal means. 00:04:23.10\00:04:27.19 Ok, so I know that in the Emergency Room, 00:04:27.22\00:04:30.69 the standard dose of activated charcoal, 00:04:30.72\00:04:33.28 which is 50 grams, that is actually the equivalent to 00:04:33.29\00:04:36.73 the size of 10 football fields. 00:04:36.76\00:04:38.43 Well, it is, it is absolutely amazing, this internal network, 00:04:38.46\00:04:43.67 this lattice work if you want, of the charcoal, 00:04:43.70\00:04:47.61 and maybe we could throw up on our screen a picture of 00:04:47.64\00:04:51.72 charcoal powder and you can see how really fine it is. 00:04:51.75\00:04:55.76 Charcoal is actually made from a number of different products, 00:04:55.77\00:04:58.77 I should say activated charcoal. 00:04:58.80\00:05:00.84 It can come from hard woods, it can come from olive pits, 00:05:00.87\00:05:08.08 or bamboo, or coconut. 00:05:08.11\00:05:09.77 There are many different sources for the initial product, 00:05:09.78\00:05:12.87 and then the activated. 00:05:12.88\00:05:14.33 You can see on the screen here that it is very very fine. 00:05:14.36\00:05:17.05 If you want to take a look at the next one, 00:05:17.08\00:05:19.21 we have actually an electron micrographic picture 00:05:19.24\00:05:22.30 of a charcoal particle. - Ok! 00:05:22.33\00:05:24.38 On this one, even this very very minute particle you can 00:05:24.41\00:05:29.47 on this picture how much surface area there is there. 00:05:29.50\00:05:34.09 Now you can imagine taking 50 grams of that and 00:05:34.12\00:05:37.64 unfolding this and you can see the tremendous surface area 00:05:37.67\00:05:41.25 and it is that surface area that accounts for some of that 00:05:41.28\00:05:45.37 amazing qualities that charcoal has. 00:05:45.40\00:05:47.40 Well, actually the American Academy of Pediatrics 00:05:47.43\00:05:51.33 put out a physicians statement in 2003 that said 00:05:51.36\00:05:54.90 Activated Charcoal was the best intervention for reducing 00:05:54.93\00:05:59.69 the availability of ingested substances, 00:05:59.72\00:06:02.41 so we can see from that surface area why it does this. 00:06:02.44\00:06:06.31 Tell me, how far does charcoal go back? 00:06:06.35\00:06:09.55 Well, it has a long history, we can trace it back to 00:06:09.58\00:06:13.36 the 1500 years B.C. - OH! 00:06:13.39\00:06:14.97 Some interesting things back then, they were using it to 00:06:15.00\00:06:18.84 control odors from wounds. 00:06:18.87\00:06:20.55 Eventually they decided if it does so good with 00:06:20.56\00:06:25.23 controlling odors, they discovered lets bury our dead 00:06:25.26\00:06:28.74 in layers of sand and charcoal and was able to preserve 00:06:28.77\00:06:31.69 these dead bodies. 00:06:31.70\00:06:32.78 They had already experimented with posts along the 00:06:32.81\00:06:35.36 River Nile, preserve these dead posts. 00:06:35.87\00:06:37.81 So it preserved them, then moving up to 400 B.C. 00:06:37.84\00:06:44.13 Hippocrates... prescribed charcoal for anthrax, 00:06:44.16\00:06:49.10 and different things in his day, along with Plinni? 00:06:49.13\00:06:52.81 Then it starts moving into the 1700's and the sugar industry 00:06:52.84\00:07:01.18 started using charcoal to whiten sugar. 00:07:01.21\00:07:04.79 The activation process developed in the late 1800's 00:07:04.82\00:07:09.50 and then the use of charcoal literally exploded, 00:07:09.53\00:07:13.42 they were using it for all manner of things. 00:07:13.45\00:07:15.85 All kind of things. 00:07:15.88\00:07:16.89 Maybe we show up on our screen a graphic showing 00:07:16.92\00:07:21.79 some of these different uses of charcoal. 00:07:21.80\00:07:24.33 As I said it goes back to 1500 years B.C., 00:07:24.36\00:07:27.84 you will see that they were using it for Flatulence 00:07:27.87\00:07:30.19 and Indigestion, that's gas. 00:07:30.22\00:07:31.46 In fact when Europeans came to North America 00:07:31.49\00:07:34.64 they found American Indians using charcoal to control 00:07:34.67\00:07:38.64 Indigestion, but since then of course we found that it 00:07:38.67\00:07:42.31 works very well for Nausea and Vomiting, Diarrhea, 00:07:42.34\00:07:45.91 we will talk about that a little bit later. 00:07:45.94\00:07:47.73 Poisoning, we will talk about that as well. 00:07:47.76\00:07:49.76 There is even literature now talking about charcoal's ability 00:08:02.81\00:08:05.73 to reduce cholesterol. 00:08:05.76\00:08:07.12 Oh, that's important! 00:08:07.15\00:08:08.12 Heart disease is the number one killer, 00:08:08.13\00:08:12.70 and so something as simple as cholesterol lowering 00:08:12.73\00:08:17.30 with charcoal would be extremely useful. 00:08:17.33\00:08:20.12 It sounds almost like Black Magic doesn't it? 00:08:20.15\00:08:22.31 It does sound like Black Magic. 00:08:22.34\00:08:23.65 But you know there is a lot of science behind it, and so 00:08:23.68\00:08:26.42 it is used in industry every single day. 00:08:26.45\00:08:30.27 Vegetable oils are cleaned with charcoal, 00:08:30.30\00:08:33.38 we drink water that is filtered with charcoal. 00:08:33.41\00:08:35.67 As you saw on that screen, Kidney Dialysis machines 00:08:35.70\00:08:39.50 actually filter blood through a bed of granular charcoal 00:08:39.53\00:08:43.17 to make it clean. 00:08:43.20\00:08:44.38 Hospitals are using this on a regular basis. 00:08:44.41\00:08:48.26 We want our viewing audience to know, they are not hospital 00:08:48.27\00:08:54.01 personnel, so should they feel comfortable 00:08:54.04\00:08:56.75 about using this remedy in the home. 00:08:56.78\00:08:59.42 They certainly can, not everybody has the privilege 00:08:59.45\00:09:03.43 of living next door to a hospital or an Emergency Ward, 00:09:03.44\00:09:05.57 and some of our viewers are probably living 00:09:05.60\00:09:08.42 in other countries where even their medical facilities 00:09:08.45\00:09:11.69 are even more remote than we see them here. 00:09:11.73\00:09:13.38 But even in our own communities here in North America 00:09:13.41\00:09:16.39 people in their homes are using it every single day. 00:09:16.42\00:09:20.16 My wife and I use it in our home, 00:09:20.17\00:09:22.79 have been using it for almost 30 years. 00:09:22.82\00:09:25.75 Our children use it and they taught their children to use it, 00:09:25.78\00:09:28.79 so our grandchildren are accustomed to use it. 00:09:28.82\00:09:31.57 But again, health care professionals use it 00:09:31.60\00:09:36.82 not only in the hospitals... 00:09:36.85\00:09:37.88 I have a very close friend, she is a head nurse 00:09:37.91\00:09:40.67 she has worked across North America, Hawaii, Alaska, 00:09:40.70\00:09:44.29 in Emergency Rooms, and you have worked in 00:09:44.32\00:09:47.35 Emergency Rooms as well. 00:09:47.36\00:09:48.67 She has used it there, but she uses it at home as well. 00:09:48.70\00:09:53.53 Absolutely! 00:09:53.56\00:09:55.74 I've used it in my home too. 00:09:55.75\00:09:57.92 I've seen it used in the Emergency Room for 00:09:57.95\00:10:00.93 toxic ingestions where somebody may die unless 00:10:00.96\00:10:04.97 they are given this, but something simply in the home 00:10:05.00\00:10:08.15 we are not suggesting that viewers use this in an 00:10:08.18\00:10:12.39 emergency situation while here in North America because 00:10:12.42\00:10:16.06 we know they can get to the Emergency Room. 00:10:16.09\00:10:17.88 But in other places where they may not have access 00:10:17.91\00:10:23.23 you would hope that they would use this, 00:10:23.26\00:10:24.87 but for something very simple like a sore throat. 00:10:24.90\00:10:27.87 or an insect bite... 00:10:27.90\00:10:30.08 Have you had any experiences with those? 00:10:30.11\00:10:32.35 Well yes, there are numbers of stories of insect bites, 00:10:32.36\00:10:36.78 I guess one that comes to my mind is Dr. Thrash 00:10:36.81\00:10:41.18 who is the Medical Director for the state of Georgia 00:10:41.21\00:10:44.71 has been for forty some years... 00:10:44.72\00:10:45.96 She tells the story of her granddaughter who was 00:10:45.99\00:10:49.93 outside playing and she found herself playing 00:10:49.94\00:10:52.90 on a hill of Fire Ants, and within seconds there were 00:10:52.91\00:10:57.55 literally hundreds of these insects biting her 00:10:57.58\00:11:00.24 and was screaming hysterically. 00:11:00.27\00:11:03.18 Dr. Thrash ran out, they grabbed the child, 00:11:03.21\00:11:07.06 ran for the house, filled a tub with warm water, 00:11:07.09\00:11:10.39 placed the child in the warm water, 00:11:10.42\00:11:13.24 they had already mixed in charcoal powder, 00:11:13.27\00:11:15.28 she said within two minutes this poor child 00:11:15.31\00:11:18.37 had stopped screaming. 00:11:18.40\00:11:20.19 That the charcoal had neutralized the poisons 00:11:20.22\00:11:23.38 and the child was basically pain free. 00:11:23.41\00:11:27.68 Now that is her experience, Dr. Agatha went so far as 00:11:27.71\00:11:32.85 to say if she was stranded on a desert island 00:11:32.88\00:11:34.96 and she could choose only one thing to take along 00:11:34.99\00:11:37.37 with her for infections, for emergency accidents, 00:11:37.40\00:11:42.03 she would choose charcoal. 00:11:42.06\00:11:44.42 Activated charcoal, Absolutely! 00:11:44.45\00:11:45.83 I do agree with her on that, I had an experience myself 00:11:45.86\00:11:51.38 when I was in Florida... I am highly reactive to 00:11:51.41\00:11:57.16 wasp stings or bee stings, and in fact I was actually 00:11:57.19\00:12:00.36 doing a demonstration about activated charcoal 00:12:00.37\00:12:03.08 and I really made up my poultice to be able to show 00:12:03.11\00:12:05.55 the audience and so that was all ready and waiting for me. 00:12:05.58\00:12:09.16 So in the interim we went outside and I was just out there 00:12:09.20\00:12:11.83 having a conversation and I felt something on my hand 00:12:11.86\00:12:14.86 and then the sting. 00:12:14.89\00:12:17.04 I knew that my hand would swell so immediately I grabbed that 00:12:17.07\00:12:21.23 poultice that was for the demonstration, 00:12:21.26\00:12:22.89 and I put that right on there and within 30 seconds 00:12:22.92\00:12:27.67 the stinging, the pain was gone and I had no reaction, and 00:12:27.70\00:12:32.87 usually I really would swell, and I had no reaction to that. 00:12:32.90\00:12:36.12 So when you think about the science of that, 00:12:36.15\00:12:37.93 you've already showed the graphic of the surface area, 00:12:37.96\00:12:43.32 there is something called van der Waal's forces where they 00:12:43.33\00:12:47.29 tracked different particles to them, so it makes sense. 00:12:47.32\00:12:53.02 I like to relate it to a black hole, 00:12:53.05\00:12:55.27 you know this phenomena up in space is able to pull things 00:12:55.28\00:12:59.56 to it and then it doesn't let go of them. 00:12:59.59\00:13:02.21 It sounds fantastic, but here we have charcoal, 00:13:02.24\00:13:04.69 you can't see black holes but you can see charcoal. 00:13:04.72\00:13:07.09 - Absolutely! If we had a quart jar here 00:13:07.12\00:13:10.10 of activated charcoal, we're told that that one quart jar 00:13:10.11\00:13:14.65 can hold up to 80 quarts of ammonia gas. 00:13:14.68\00:13:17.19 It's that tremendous surface area that binds these proteins 00:13:17.22\00:13:20.79 or gas molecules, or toxins, whatever they are 00:13:20.82\00:13:23.87 and holds them, and in the case of poisoning, 00:13:23.90\00:13:26.56 holds them until the charcoal and the poison is eliminated 00:13:26.59\00:13:28.80 from the body. 00:13:28.83\00:13:29.80 Now obviously we are not saying that people shouldn't 00:13:29.81\00:13:34.80 make use of Emergency Rooms... - Right, we are not saying that. 00:13:34.83\00:13:38.38 Some people may have gone into anaphylactic shock 00:13:38.39\00:13:41.44 because of a bee sting, but how much more sense 00:13:41.47\00:13:44.92 does it make to apply the charcoal while you are 00:13:44.95\00:13:47.80 heading towards an Emergency Room where you can get 00:13:47.83\00:13:49.98 professional help. 00:13:50.01\00:13:50.98 This is sort of like a fire extinguisher until the fireman 00:13:50.99\00:13:54.59 get to your help. Right! 00:13:54.62\00:13:57.57 Instead of the parents or family members feeling helpless 00:13:57.58\00:14:01.34 they will dial 911 and then they would put a poultice on 00:14:01.37\00:14:07.18 or they would have them drink some of that activated charcoal. 00:14:07.21\00:14:11.16 Exactly, in fact there is a number of the poison control 00:14:11.19\00:14:14.01 centers across North America do recommend in fact 00:14:14.04\00:14:16.48 that you have charcoal in the home. 00:14:16.49\00:14:18.20 I know there is some discussion whether parents are able to 00:14:18.23\00:14:22.48 properly administer it to their children but 00:14:22.51\00:14:25.11 whether that is true or not... It seems to me 00:14:25.14\00:14:28.70 that a parent who knows a child and the child who knows 00:14:28.73\00:14:31.76 the parent is going to have a lot easier time to apply 00:14:31.79\00:14:34.11 the charcoal in the home and then head off to the 00:14:34.14\00:14:37.63 Emergency Room. 00:14:37.64\00:14:38.95 What about something as simple as an ear infection? 00:14:38.98\00:14:41.27 I remember my son was just a toddler and woke up screaming 00:14:41.30\00:14:46.97 pulling at his ear, and I knew exactly what was going on. 00:14:47.00\00:14:49.57 I was a medical student at the time and I looked in his ear 00:14:49.60\00:14:52.17 and he had a bulging eardrum. 00:14:52.20\00:14:53.43 I quickly made up a charcoal poultice and applied it to the 00:14:53.46\00:14:58.67 external ear, and of course I had to find that information 00:14:58.70\00:15:01.20 from Dr. Agatha Thrash. 00:15:01.21\00:15:03.54 I applied that and within a few minutes he calmed down 00:15:03.57\00:15:09.35 and he was able to sleep through the night, 00:15:09.38\00:15:11.85 I still took him to the doctor the next morning 00:15:11.88\00:15:13.94 and she did determine that he did have an ear infection 00:15:13.97\00:15:16.75 but it was amazing to have him just settle down 00:15:16.78\00:15:20.57 and sleep through the night with a bulging eardrum. 00:15:20.60\00:15:23.33 Of course that let you relax a little be too. 00:15:23.36\00:15:26.03 Exactly! 00:15:26.06\00:15:27.03 Well, I use an acronym called S.A.F.E. 00:15:27.04\00:15:29.22 - Tell us what S.A.F.E. means. 00:15:29.25\00:15:30.94 S.A.F.E., as I travel in different countries 00:15:30.97\00:15:34.02 I've come back to North America with our amazing 00:15:34.05\00:15:37.62 health care system. 00:15:37.65\00:15:38.62 It is so readily available for most of us, 00:15:38.63\00:15:41.21 and then I compare them to countries like Nepal, 00:15:41.24\00:15:44.51 or working out in the Pacific where you may be hours 00:15:44.54\00:15:47.23 from the nearest road or you may be days 00:15:47.26\00:15:49.07 from the nearest clinic... 00:15:49.10\00:15:50.15 I came to ask myself the question, 00:15:50.18\00:15:53.15 "Do you have to be wealthy to be healthy"? 00:15:53.18\00:15:55.07 Or does God only love rich people? 00:15:55.10\00:15:57.14 - No! - Well, I don't think so either. 00:15:57.17\00:15:58.92 So I came up with this acronym, I looked at 00:15:58.95\00:16:02.05 If God really loves us wherever you are in the world, 00:16:02.08\00:16:05.35 whatever your social and economic status is 00:16:05.38\00:16:07.73 then is seems to me that remedies should be Simple, 00:16:07.76\00:16:10.64 they should be Affordable, they should be Accessible. 00:16:10.67\00:16:13.87 You are going to have to measure out a little bit of Faith, 00:16:13.90\00:16:17.24 when you take it with you, and lastly, they should be 00:16:17.27\00:16:21.20 Easy to apply... 00:16:21.23\00:16:23.87 Charcoal is easy, it's a little bit messy, 00:16:23.90\00:16:26.94 as you have used it over and over again it gets 00:16:26.97\00:16:30.70 easier and easier to use. 00:16:30.73\00:16:31.70 It does get easier to use, I have my fare share 00:16:31.71\00:16:34.07 of making a mess with charcoal, 00:16:34.10\00:16:35.79 I know how to do it quite expertly now but initially 00:16:35.82\00:16:39.74 we had charcoal powder everywhere. 00:16:39.77\00:16:42.88 That S.A.F.E. acronym is really important... 00:16:42.91\00:16:46.89 You said that maybe a place like Nepal would be a place 00:16:46.92\00:16:50.69 for it to be used, but even here in North America 00:16:50.72\00:16:52.90 there is a lot of people who do not have access to health care. 00:16:52.93\00:16:56.03 They cannot afford it, and they are out in the 00:16:56.06\00:17:00.70 rural areas, and in some counties the physicians are 00:17:00.73\00:17:04.46 moving away because of malpractice litigation 00:17:04.49\00:17:07.22 and so we do have a tremendous amount of people who do not 00:17:07.25\00:17:11.04 have access, and this is something that is fairly simple 00:17:11.07\00:17:14.96 that really could save someone's life. 00:17:14.99\00:17:18.24 In fact I was talking with one of the technicians 00:17:18.27\00:17:21.72 before we did our program today and he's training to be 00:17:21.75\00:17:26.14 an EMT, and he was saying that yea, on board 00:17:26.17\00:17:30.56 they carry charcoal. 00:17:30.59\00:17:31.98 - They carry activated charcoal. - So on the way to the hospital 00:17:32.01\00:17:33.93 if you haven't applied it, it's a good chance 00:17:33.96\00:17:35.74 they may apply it on the way to the hospital. 00:17:35.77\00:17:38.20 There are a number of different ways that we can use it 00:17:38.24\00:17:41.88 in the home, you mentioned the ears, 00:17:41.91\00:17:43.23 you can apply it as a poultice, or an eye wash 00:17:43.26\00:17:47.08 for the eye infections. 00:17:48.57\00:17:49.54 - Tell our viewing audience what a poultice is. 00:17:49.55\00:17:52.14 You make a paste with charcoal, you can make it just with water, 00:17:52.17\00:17:58.85 it tends to dry out more quickly but if you mixed it with 00:17:58.88\00:18:02.62 something like ground up flax seed 00:18:02.63\00:18:05.33 it makes a paste, a jell, and that moisture holds longer, 00:18:05.36\00:18:11.06 it's that moist contact with the skin that allows charcoal 00:18:11.09\00:18:15.88 to somehow mysteriously draw out toxins or poisons 00:18:15.91\00:18:19.02 through the skin into the charcoal poultice. 00:18:19.05\00:18:22.34 - And we want to make a point that if his is not 00:18:22.37\00:18:24.26 absorption, it is not sucking up, it is adsorbing, 00:18:24.29\00:18:30.18 A D onto the surface through all those little crevices 00:18:30.21\00:18:33.91 that are exposed to. 00:18:33.94\00:18:34.91 It has this electro static type of affinity for other molecules 00:18:34.94\00:18:42.31 some of them are... we might want to call them 00:18:42.34\00:18:44.19 loose cannons, they are in our body, maybe free radicals 00:18:44.22\00:18:48.13 or toxins or waste products and thee Lancet Magazine 00:18:48.16\00:18:52.44 which is a premier medical journal for England 00:18:52.47\00:18:54.41 has reported that when they applied charcoal poultices 00:18:54.44\00:18:57.39 superficially that somehow the mystery of charcoal 00:18:57.42\00:19:01.57 is actually able to pull these toxins from deep tissue 00:19:01.58\00:19:04.56 and as well deep organs. 00:19:04.57\00:19:06.58 Those van de Waal forces that are on the surfaces 00:19:06.61\00:19:10.70 of the charcoal really do pull and attract. 00:19:10.73\00:19:14.47 - Big Black Hole! 00:19:14.50\00:19:18.60 Recently a friend sent in a story of their daughter, 00:19:18.63\00:19:23.90 now this lady is a nurse, practices at a large hospital. 00:19:23.93\00:19:28.53 Her husband is an anesthesiologist, 00:19:28.56\00:19:31.76 and their daughter developed a urinary tract infection 00:19:31.77\00:19:36.12 at the age of two years I believe, and for the next 00:19:36.13\00:19:39.41 51/2 years she suffered with this problem chronically. 00:19:39.45\00:19:43.30 It got to the point where their physician decided that he would 00:19:43.33\00:19:47.99 have to go in and scrape the ureters, scrape the bladder, 00:19:48.02\00:19:51.98 dilate it and check out the kidney as well. 00:19:52.01\00:19:54.90 That is a major procedure and you can imagine the trauma 00:19:54.93\00:20:00.68 just for the child, but the parents, what it must put 00:20:00.71\00:20:03.29 them through, thinking oh, there has got to be 00:20:03.32\00:20:05.41 some other solution. 00:20:05.44\00:20:06.41 Well, after 51/2 years it was time to do another procedure 00:20:06.43\00:20:11.70 and the parents said no, there has got to be something else, 00:20:11.71\00:20:14.06 and they knew a chemist, and this chemist said 00:20:14.09\00:20:18.43 why don't you try charcoal? 00:20:18.46\00:20:20.42 Place it in water and have her drink this charcoal slurry. 00:20:20.45\00:20:23.66 Well they did and when the child took it, 00:20:23.69\00:20:26.47 the nurse friend told me that the child was symptomatic 00:20:26.50\00:20:29.45 at the time, she was in a great deal of discomfort and pain. 00:20:29.48\00:20:32.17 Within two hours she was pain free and the last report 00:20:32.21\00:20:39.23 was after a period of time, I am not sure the period of time 00:20:39.26\00:20:42.91 but the child was symptom free. 00:20:42.94\00:20:44.73 - Symptom free and no more urinary tract infection. 00:20:44.76\00:20:47.58 Can you imagine if they could have discovered this 00:20:47.61\00:20:49.48 5 years ago. - Five years and sooner. 00:20:49.51\00:20:51.63 You know I have used charcoal for food poisoning, 00:20:51.66\00:20:55.76 no one likes to be running to the bathroom with diarrhea 00:20:55.77\00:20:59.31 and that cramping that occurs. 00:20:59.34\00:21:01.19 Yes, you don't have to wait for a severe case of poisoning. 00:21:01.22\00:21:05.16 We may go out to eat at a restaurant or some friends 00:21:05.19\00:21:09.10 may invite us home, or we are traveling overseas for 00:21:09.13\00:21:12.67 whatever reason and we eat some strange food or drink 00:21:12.70\00:21:15.01 some strange water, and we suddenly find ourselves 00:21:15.02\00:21:18.33 with an upset floppy stomach. 00:21:18.34\00:21:20.31 It's not bad enough that we have to go to the Emergency 00:21:20.34\00:21:22.82 but we don't really want to lay there all night either. 00:21:22.85\00:21:25.39 Take a glass of water stir the charcoal into the water. 00:21:25.42\00:21:30.18 - Into the water, not the other way around. 00:21:30.21\00:21:31.63 Not the other way around and drink that down 00:21:31.66\00:21:34.37 and usually within a half an hour that upset stomach, 00:21:34.40\00:21:39.17 that indigestion, gas, or heartburn, or acid reflux, 00:21:39.20\00:21:41.90 is brought under control. 00:21:41.93\00:21:43.92 You know on Pubmed in the American Journal of 00:21:43.95\00:21:47.34 Gastroenterology, they did do a study, it was a double-blind 00:21:47.35\00:21:52.24 clinical trial that looked at activated charcoal in 00:21:52.27\00:21:56.08 decreased intestinal gas. 00:21:56.11\00:21:57.95 So those things that we were doing through faith there is 00:21:57.98\00:22:01.79 actually some clinical research to substantiate that. 00:22:01.82\00:22:06.23 There are lots of anecdotal stories out there, 00:22:06.26\00:22:09.36 but I found as I gathered some of the stories for the book 00:22:09.39\00:22:14.89 how many people who had good stories were actually 00:22:14.92\00:22:18.93 health care providers, whether doctors, physicians assistants, 00:22:18.96\00:22:23.46 nurses, chemists, lab techs, people who are really informed. 00:22:23.49\00:22:29.22 This is something unusual because back in 1908 the 00:22:29.25\00:22:33.94 Sears and Roebuck Catalog actually carried charcoal 00:22:33.95\00:22:36.94 in their catalog. 00:22:36.97\00:22:38.60 They said as everybody knows charcoal is so good for 00:22:38.63\00:22:42.85 indigestion, heartburn, and gas and so forth. 00:22:42.88\00:22:46.19 But that was 1908 and somehow charcoal disappeared off the 00:22:46.20\00:22:50.42 radar screen and it's only now people are becoming 00:22:50.45\00:22:54.12 more aware of it. 00:22:54.15\00:22:55.12 We attended a trade show and somebody picked up the 00:22:55.13\00:23:01.38 literature when I wasn't there and contacted me after the show 00:23:01.41\00:23:04.31 and he was a head nurse in an Emergency Room and he said 00:23:04.34\00:23:06.26 charcoal, it's absolutely amazing. 00:23:06.29\00:23:09.01 He says, I don't even wait to get sick, if I feel the symptoms 00:23:09.04\00:23:12.62 of a flu coming on or a bug or upset stomach, 00:23:12.65\00:23:15.34 I take the charcoal because I don't know how it works 00:23:15.37\00:23:18.59 but it seems to eliminate those symptoms, 00:23:18.62\00:23:22.70 and I don't have to go through the whole flu cycle. 00:23:22.73\00:23:26.40 That's a principal in simple home remedies that you 00:23:26.43\00:23:31.94 do start at the very first sign of symptoms, 00:23:31.97\00:23:34.61 don't wait until all the symptoms track in, 00:23:34.64\00:23:37.69 because by that time you will need to go to the 00:23:37.72\00:23:41.15 Emergency Room. So whatever it is 00:23:41.18\00:23:43.37 whether it is a cold, or an upset stomach, 00:23:43.40\00:23:45.42 right away we want people doing those simple home remedies. 00:23:45.45\00:23:49.44 Charcoal, drinking lots of water, we like to do that 00:23:49.47\00:23:53.46 water flush, we drink several glasses in just one hours time, 00:23:53.49\00:23:57.53 and that really flushes the virus... the virus likes 00:23:57.54\00:24:02.14 dry membranes, so if you flush those membranes 00:24:02.17\00:24:06.44 the virus is not able to attach as easily. 00:24:06.47\00:24:09.97 Then you couple that with activated charcoal 00:24:10.00\00:24:12.57 with those van De Waal forces pulling and sucking in 00:24:12.60\00:24:16.14 those toxins, then we've truly got a nice simple remedy. 00:24:16.17\00:24:21.10 Well, you mentioned water... charcoal as a simple home remedy 00:24:21.13\00:24:26.28 is only as effective as we use a holistic health program, 00:24:26.31\00:24:30.16 you mentioned water, of course we know about exercise, 00:24:30.19\00:24:31.98 and good nutrition and all these other preventives. 00:24:32.01\00:24:34.46 So charcoal is not a magic bullet, it's not a cure all, 00:24:34.49\00:24:39.26 sometimes it works. For many people it does work. 00:24:39.29\00:24:42.41 Sometimes it may not work and you are going to 00:24:42.44\00:24:44.79 have to look for some other safe remedy as an alternative 00:24:44.82\00:24:49.06 before you have to go to the hospital if need be. 00:24:49.09\00:24:51.58 Another thing that people sometimes say... 00:24:51.61\00:24:54.99 oh charcoal is burnt toast. 00:24:55.02\00:24:56.65 Now I am not saying that burnt toast might not be a 00:24:56.68\00:24:59.49 home remedy, but it is not charcoal. 00:24:59.52\00:25:01.65 It's not charcoal, in fact burnt toast is actually 00:25:01.68\00:25:03.49 carcinogenic. - Yes, it's super heated 00:25:03.52\00:25:06.20 carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, and these things 00:25:06.23\00:25:10.05 can be carcinogenic. 00:25:10.08\00:25:12.57 Carcinogenic meaning cancer forming. 00:25:12.60\00:25:14.74 Correct, and since you brought us carcinogenic 00:25:14.75\00:25:18.71 let's briefly talk about briquettes. 00:25:18.74\00:25:21.99 I know that there are natural briquettes, 00:25:22.02\00:25:26.52 but most people when they, go to the store to buy briquettes 00:25:26.55\00:25:29.26 it is impregnated with fossil fuels to help them ignite. 00:25:29.29\00:25:32.84 That is not something that you would want to apply... 00:25:32.87\00:25:34.72 take internally, or apply superficially. 00:25:34.75\00:25:37.19 Now it has also been... some people have said 00:25:37.22\00:25:40.53 charcoal is carcinogenic and the reason is 00:25:40.56\00:25:43.28 the connected to benzopyrenes. 00:25:43.32\00:25:44.87 A lot of people barbeque their food, braze their food, 00:25:44.90\00:25:48.42 and what happens is when they are cooking their food 00:25:48.45\00:25:51.84 and these fats, juices drip down into the hot coals they 00:25:51.87\00:25:55.54 vaporize, form these benzopyrenes and then embed 00:25:55.57\00:25:58.85 themselves against the bottom of the food that 00:25:58.88\00:26:00.78 they are barbequing. 00:26:00.81\00:26:02.11 But that's not charcoal, it's the heat from the charcoal 00:26:02.14\00:26:06.06 that produces these benzopyrenes. 00:26:06.09\00:26:08.17 So there we have the list, we have charcoal is not toast, 00:26:08.20\00:26:11.94 it's not briquettes, and it's not a cure all. 00:26:11.95\00:26:14.04 I would want to mention to you, charcoal has an 00:26:14.07\00:26:18.69 indefinite life span. 00:26:18.73\00:26:20.49 When you buy it at the store, it will come either as a powder, 00:26:20.52\00:26:26.21 as a tablet, as a capsule, and sometimes it will be 00:26:26.24\00:26:30.54 stamped with a shelf life. 00:26:30.57\00:26:31.82 It's only for marketing purposes, 00:26:31.85\00:26:34.48 actually if you keep the lid tight, 00:26:34.51\00:26:36.13 it will last indefinitely. 00:26:36.16\00:26:38.40 I've had charcoal for years, I've had it for 10 years. 00:26:38.43\00:26:43.16 - It's still very very active. - And it's very effective. 00:26:43.19\00:26:46.32 Right! In fact the W.H.O. World Health Organization 00:26:46.35\00:26:51.47 has passed a resolution encouraging other nations 00:26:51.50\00:26:54.54 to really study into using simple, natural, harmless, 00:26:54.55\00:26:59.55 scientifically proven remedies, and I can think of no 00:26:59.59\00:27:03.27 remedy that fits that description better 00:27:03.30\00:27:05.94 than charcoal. 00:27:05.97\00:27:06.94 In fact when you think of diarrhea, diarrhea according to 00:27:06.95\00:27:11.26 the W.H.O. kills around 5,000 people every single day 00:27:11.29\00:27:16.28 of the year. Cholera is a major killer 00:27:16.31\00:27:20.83 in some developing countries, we do not have it here. 00:27:20.86\00:27:23.25 But charcoal deals with severe diarrhea... 00:27:23.28\00:27:26.76 When I was working on a remote island out in the Pacific 00:27:26.79\00:27:29.92 the community nurse was dealing with a patient 00:27:29.95\00:27:31.86 who had severe Cholera she was not able to help him 00:27:31.89\00:27:35.49 with her standard medicines and she gave charcoal, 00:27:35.52\00:27:40.78 it stopped the diarrhea, she then gave the re-hydration salts 00:27:40.81\00:27:43.68 and she was able to save his life. 00:27:43.71\00:27:45.99 So for something as simple as a bee sting to something 00:27:46.02\00:27:50.36 as Cholera... activated charcoal is 00:27:50.39\00:27:54.58 simple and scientifically proven. 00:27:54.61\00:27:56.45 Yes! 00:27:56.48\00:27:57.45 John, I want to thank you for coming and sharing this 00:27:57.46\00:27:59.48 wonderful information with us and with our viewing audience 00:27:59.51\00:28:02.82 and those around the world. 00:28:02.83\00:28:04.15 Thank You! 00:28:04.18\00:28:05.36 We wish above all things that you will prosper and 00:28:05.39\00:28:08.76 be in health, even as your soul prospers. 00:28:08.79\00:28:11.73 May God Bless You! 00:28:11.76\00:28:13.14
