Thank you 00:01:04.02\00:01:06.88 Now, Dan, is a businessman from Chattanooga, TN 00:01:06.91\00:01:10.33 and he's also a health consumer 00:01:10.36\00:01:12.53 And, in talking about sleep, I think it's very useful 00:01:12.54\00:01:16.90 to have someone that might have had some experience 00:01:16.93\00:01:20.22 with sleep, and I think all of us have had some 00:01:20.25\00:01:22.43 experience with sleep. Right 00:01:22.46\00:01:23.91 Can you just tell us some of the experiences you've had 00:01:23.94\00:01:27.20 in your sleeping patterns over the last few years. 00:01:27.21\00:01:30.08 Well, my sleeping patterns are a little bit different than 00:01:30.11\00:01:34.65 those peoples... 00:01:34.68\00:01:36.56 Owning a business like I do, I run the business during 00:01:36.59\00:01:43.25 the day, and then at night, I plan, in my mind, 00:01:43.28\00:01:46.46 what my next day will be. 00:01:46.49\00:01:48.65 And so, in doing that, what I do is stay awake all night 00:01:48.68\00:01:53.66 and so I've had to develop ways that I can get my rest 00:01:53.69\00:01:58.04 and still function... which is very difficult when you 00:01:58.07\00:02:02.08 don't have any rest. 00:02:02.11\00:02:03.53 So that's part of problems that I've had. 00:02:03.56\00:02:06.40 Well how do you adapt to this, 00:02:06.43\00:02:07.66 and do you think this lack of sleep has affected 00:02:07.69\00:02:09.83 your health, or your performance in any way... 00:02:09.84\00:02:12.57 or do you think it's catching up to you, 00:02:12.60\00:02:14.15 or you think it's something your tolerating well? 00:02:14.18\00:02:17.11 Now when you have a family, it always affects the family 00:02:17.14\00:02:19.99 when you don't have enough sleep... 00:02:20.02\00:02:21.44 you're grumpy the next day, you're short with people, 00:02:21.47\00:02:25.59 you don't have the patience that you should have... 00:02:25.62\00:02:27.90 You know, there are a number of different issues when 00:02:27.93\00:02:30.93 it comes to that. 00:02:30.94\00:02:32.67 As far as my performance at work, I don't think it 00:02:32.70\00:02:34.96 affected that, but, you know I can't tell you that for sure. 00:02:34.99\00:02:39.55 You know, we deal with our sleep habits in several 00:02:39.58\00:02:47.81 different ways, I guess... 00:02:47.84\00:02:49.20 And the way that I have is I like it completely dark, 00:02:49.23\00:02:53.84 and I sleep with a fan on. 00:02:53.87\00:02:56.29 I can't sleep any other way. 00:02:56.32\00:02:58.35 And so that's kind of helped me deal with some of the 00:02:58.38\00:03:00.77 issues that I've had when it came to that. 00:03:00.80\00:03:03.08 Well, that's what we're going to talk about today. 00:03:03.11\00:03:05.14 We're going to talk about sleep... 00:03:05.17\00:03:07.08 and as time has gone on in the practice of medicine, 00:03:07.11\00:03:10.91 I've gone on to think that sleep is as important 00:03:10.94\00:03:15.55 as anything else we do in taking care of our bodies. 00:03:15.56\00:03:18.65 And we're going to explore that with today's topics. 00:03:18.68\00:03:22.07 One of the things that I'm now appreciating about sleep 00:03:22.10\00:03:25.30 is, you know, Dan, most people spend about a third 00:03:25.33\00:03:29.65 of their life sleeping... Right 00:03:29.68\00:03:31.88 ...or trying to sleep well. 00:03:31.89\00:03:33.66 Most people admit that they don't feel like they 00:03:33.69\00:03:36.70 do that part of their life well ... sleeping well. 00:03:36.73\00:03:39.08 Now, if I asked you bluntly, "Do you think you're 00:03:39.11\00:03:41.57 sleeping well in your life... 00:03:41.60\00:03:42.96 Is that an aspect of your life that you think you're doing well 00:03:42.99\00:03:46.66 I think, at this point in time, I am, because I've finally 00:03:46.69\00:03:49.98 developed steps that I needed to take. 00:03:50.01\00:03:52.28 It's kind of a learned behavior for me. Right 00:03:52.31\00:03:55.60 A third of us... you know we spend a third of our time 00:03:55.63\00:03:58.78 in sleep, and it's sort of a shameful admission, 00:03:58.82\00:04:01.91 and I'm one of them to admit that a third of my life... 00:04:01.95\00:04:04.45 I'm not living well. 00:04:04.46\00:04:06.10 And yet, as Christians, and living to the glory of God, 00:04:06.13\00:04:09.71 we want to do as well as we can in ALL of our time... Right 00:04:09.74\00:04:14.26 whether that's sleeping time, or waking time 00:04:14.29\00:04:18.73 I've studied some statistics recently, 00:04:18.76\00:04:20.91 and 60 million Americans right now... 00:04:20.94\00:04:23.35 60 million Americans... and I'm sure those across 00:04:23.38\00:04:25.62 the world have similar problems 00:04:25.63\00:04:27.37 feel like they suffer from insomnia... Right 00:04:27.40\00:04:32.00 And insomnia is not being able to sleep. 00:04:32.03\00:04:36.94 A couple of interesting statistics that I wanted to 00:04:36.97\00:04:39.55 share with you, and the audience 00:04:39.58\00:04:41.54 before we get started today... 00:04:41.57\00:04:42.79 Did you know that a giraffe, as big as a giraffe is, 00:04:42.82\00:04:46.61 and as long as he is, guess how many hours a day 00:04:46.64\00:04:49.07 a giraffe sleeps? I have no clue! 00:04:49.10\00:04:51.27 A giraffe sleeps on the average of 2 hours, or 1.9 hours a day 00:04:51.30\00:04:56.72 That's an average amount that a giraffe sleeps 00:04:56.75\00:05:00.10 Now here's another animal that I thought was very interesting 00:05:00.11\00:05:02.37 Do you know how long a brown bat sleep? No 00:05:02.40\00:05:05.72 A brown bat sleeps almost 20 hours a day! 00:05:05.75\00:05:09.42 A brown bat spends roughly 83% of his time sleeping 00:05:09.45\00:05:14.14 We spend about a third of our lifetime to sleep, 00:05:14.15\00:05:17.88 so that's what we're going to focus on today... 00:05:17.91\00:05:19.51 ways we can think about that one-third of our lives 00:05:19.54\00:05:22.52 that we normally don't give it much thought... Right 00:05:22.55\00:05:25.38 So with that, let me tell the audience how we got these 00:05:25.41\00:05:29.10 questions... These are people that write 00:05:29.13\00:05:30.87 questions to Heartwise Ministries from 00:05:30.90\00:05:32.80 all over the country, and what I'm doing is, 00:05:32.83\00:05:35.38 I'm grouping these into topics, 00:05:35.41\00:05:37.36 and these are all questions that have to do on the topic 00:05:37.37\00:05:40.39 of sleep, and I'm praying that as we talk, 00:05:40.42\00:05:42.74 that everyone will look at their own sleep habits 00:05:42.77\00:05:45.00 and maybe we can make a change here or there. 00:05:45.03\00:05:46.94 I don't think these changes occur overnight. 00:05:46.97\00:05:49.45 I think, you just try to change here, and then as 00:05:49.48\00:05:51.37 you feel better, you move to the next one... 00:05:51.40\00:05:53.20 So let's move on to our questions now... 00:05:53.23\00:05:54.93 All right... 1st question comes from Brenda in California. Okay 00:05:54.96\00:06:01.00 Brenda says, "My doctor gave me a prescription to help me 00:06:01.03\00:06:04.31 sleep at night... I still sleep poorly. " 00:06:04.34\00:06:07.74 "Should I take a stronger dosage?" 00:06:07.77\00:06:09.64 Okay. Well Brenda, I think that a lot of people don't 00:06:09.67\00:06:15.84 realize it, but I try, in this type of situation, 00:06:15.87\00:06:19.30 I would want to know... Why does a person not sleep well at night 00:06:19.33\00:06:23.95 What is the root cause? 00:06:23.98\00:06:25.97 A medication really doesn't solve the problem 00:06:26.00\00:06:29.58 It just perpetuates it. 00:06:29.61\00:06:31.42 And a lot of people don't realize that when these sleep 00:06:31.45\00:06:33.94 medicines came out years ago, and some of the names 00:06:33.97\00:06:37.59 ...one was called "Halcion" 00:06:37.60\00:06:38.80 I don't know if you've heard of that... Right 00:06:38.81\00:06:39.87 but they took that off the market because it was 00:06:39.90\00:06:42.58 causing people... Well, maybe they didn't take it off the 00:06:42.61\00:06:44.87 market, but it was associated with adverse events. 00:06:44.90\00:06:47.52 The most popular one now is called "Ambien" 00:06:47.55\00:06:49.87 but there are a lot of other sleep aids out there. 00:06:49.90\00:06:52.86 But the FAA only recommended that these medications 00:06:52.89\00:06:57.16 be taken for 2 weeks or less. 00:06:57.19\00:06:59.69 They've never recommended them to be taken long-term 00:06:59.72\00:07:03.34 Is it possible then that these medications are meant to 00:07:03.37\00:07:06.60 reset your sleep clock? 00:07:06.63\00:07:08.26 Because I, at one time, had taken Ambien, 00:07:08.29\00:07:10.86 and for a short period of time while I was taking it, 00:07:10.89\00:07:15.63 I just didn't understand how sleepy I was 00:07:15.66\00:07:19.33 until I woke up one morning, and realized that I was so 00:07:19.36\00:07:23.12 rested, you know, life was totally different for me. 00:07:23.15\00:07:26.26 Well that's possible because the sleep aids change the 00:07:26.29\00:07:31.28 chemical transmitters in the brain. 00:07:31.31\00:07:33.71 And they're only made, really, for the short period of time 00:07:33.74\00:07:36.37 until you can look at the cause of what caused 00:07:36.40\00:07:39.63 the insomnia to begin with. 00:07:39.64\00:07:41.50 I'm afraid nowadays that people are staying on these 00:07:41.53\00:07:44.34 years, and years, and years, 00:07:44.37\00:07:45.66 and they're not getting at the cause, and they're all 00:07:45.69\00:07:47.53 altering the chemicals, but we're never FIXING the problem 00:07:47.56\00:07:51.12 We're just sort of covering it up and that problem 00:07:51.15\00:07:52.94 is going to get worse, and every chemical reaction 00:07:52.97\00:07:56.33 you have in your body leads to something else... Right 00:07:56.36\00:07:59.18 So let's get back to Brenda for a second... 00:07:59.21\00:08:02.67 Brenda... We're going to look at a graphic here that might 00:08:02.70\00:08:07.14 give us some suggestions to help you sleep well at night 00:08:07.17\00:08:09.92 and looking at the cause of why you don't sleep well 00:08:09.95\00:08:13.51 The first sleep suggestion that I would give to you... 00:08:13.54\00:08:16.39 and you might be doing a lot of these things... 00:08:16.42\00:08:18.27 is try to have an empty stomach 00:08:18.30\00:08:20.47 We recommend having a stomach empty 3 to 4 hours 00:08:20.50\00:08:23.94 before you go to bed at night 00:08:23.95\00:08:25.56 because a lot of your energy goes to digesting food. 00:08:25.59\00:08:29.86 Up to a third of your blood flow goes to digest the food 00:08:29.89\00:08:33.21 Also when you lay down at night, you could have acid bubbling up 00:08:33.24\00:08:37.30 and that can affect sleep greatly 00:08:37.33\00:08:38.33 We would like for you to avoid stimulants... 00:08:38.36\00:08:40.51 More exercise during the day, so you're more tired 00:08:40.54\00:08:43.77 Avoid stress and that's a whole other topic. 00:08:43.80\00:08:47.30 Sometimes you can take a natural substance called "melatonin" 00:08:47.33\00:08:51.94 that might aid in your sleep. 00:08:51.97\00:08:54.56 Another thing that seems to help sleep is laughter 00:08:54.57\00:08:57.23 Laughter creates all these endorphins, 00:08:57.26\00:08:59.76 and I wonder if Johnny Carson slept better 00:08:59.79\00:09:03.84 because he laughed so much. 00:09:03.88\00:09:04.99 Sunlight increases a substance called serotonin which 00:09:05.03\00:09:09.24 aids in sleep. 00:09:09.27\00:09:10.49 And, of course, reading the Bible... 00:09:10.52\00:09:12.42 In Ephesians 4:26, it suggests that we don't go to bed 00:09:12.45\00:09:15.65 ever with anger in our hearts. 00:09:15.68\00:09:17.88 These are all some suggestions that might help you a little 00:09:17.91\00:09:21.82 bit in dealing with sleep, Brenda 00:09:21.85\00:09:26.63 Now, one of things we mentioned just a second ago was 00:09:26.66\00:09:30.92 stimulants... 00:09:30.95\00:09:32.13 Now, what kind of things, when you were having your 00:09:32.16\00:09:35.23 sleep problems, that you considered that might have 00:09:35.26\00:09:37.03 stimulated your mind at night, or your whole body system 00:09:37.06\00:09:41.23 that might have affected you, because I think 00:09:41.26\00:09:42.77 a lot of people don't look into things that stimulate... Right 00:09:42.80\00:09:46.73 Other than just the caffeines and so on and so forth... Right 00:09:46.76\00:09:49.29 Everyone knows about the caffeines, 00:09:49.32\00:09:51.11 and everyone knows about, you know, certain medicines 00:09:51.12\00:09:53.49 What are other things that might have added to your problem, Dan 00:09:53.52\00:09:56.48 For myself, a child, you know... That's right 00:09:56.51\00:10:01.13 It came at a time when we had just had our daughter 00:10:01.16\00:10:04.98 and, you know, she was up at different times during the night 00:10:05.01\00:10:08.25 so it broke up my sleep pattern. 00:10:08.28\00:10:10.93 There's a whole list of different things, I would assume 00:10:10.96\00:10:16.14 and you probably know more about those than I do, 00:10:16.17\00:10:20.33 but you've got lights being a stimulant... 00:10:20.36\00:10:24.03 You've got sounds being a stimulant. 00:10:24.06\00:10:25.93 For myself, light is a major stimulant for me. 00:10:25.96\00:10:30.57 Temperature... being very hot is probably one of the 00:10:30.60\00:10:35.81 major causes that I don't sleep; I like to sleep in a cool room 00:10:35.84\00:10:42.25 Well, in talking a little bit more about stimulants, 00:10:42.28\00:10:44.81 anything that affects the senses, can adversely 00:10:44.84\00:10:48.81 really affect these sleep patterns, 00:10:48.84\00:10:50.36 because, remember, at night the sleep time is a time 00:10:50.37\00:10:53.09 where you're basically turning off... 00:10:53.12\00:10:55.74 And anything that's coming into the senses, 00:10:55.77\00:10:58.11 could alter this... whether it be a sound, 00:10:58.14\00:11:00.36 how about snoring next door? 00:11:00.39\00:11:02.53 Does your wife snore? 00:11:02.56\00:11:03.56 No, and I'll never admit that on national... Okay 00:11:03.57\00:11:06.83 Well, I mean... you don't have to admit that, 00:11:06.86\00:11:09.29 but I hear a lot of people that snore at night, 00:11:09.32\00:11:12.12 so the other one doesn't get good sleep... 00:11:12.15\00:11:13.64 And no one will say anything... Yes 00:11:13.67\00:11:15.33 You'll leave a third of your life tired and in torture 00:11:15.36\00:11:19.19 rather than say, "Listen, you have a sleeping problem... 00:11:19.22\00:11:21.15 we need to deal with that... Well most people will deny 00:11:21.19\00:11:23.16 that they do snore... Right 00:11:23.19\00:11:24.93 I think lights is a good one, sound... How about taste? 00:11:24.97\00:11:27.48 I've had some people that had a bad taste in their mouth 00:11:27.52\00:11:30.00 and they can't sleep from that... 00:11:30.03\00:11:31.29 That's another sense that needs to be turned off. 00:11:31.32\00:11:33.64 And that goes back... I think a lot of the sleep 00:11:33.67\00:11:36.09 problems we have, these 60 million people, 00:11:36.12\00:11:38.26 this food is a big deal... 00:11:38.29\00:11:39.83 How many people eat late at night now? 00:11:39.84\00:11:41.52 I would say a lot. I don't know the numbers. 00:11:41.55\00:11:44.89 We didn't bring up... 00:11:44.92\00:11:46.10 You know, we talked about the caffeine... 00:11:46.13\00:11:47.90 a lot of people don't realize that caffeine could stay 00:11:47.93\00:11:50.61 in your system up to 20 hours. Right 00:11:50.64\00:11:53.39 It's just not, you know, you drink 1 coke in the morning 00:11:53.42\00:11:55.64 or caffeinated beverages, and it's totally out 00:11:55.65\00:11:58.80 And, caffeine affects people different ways... 00:11:58.83\00:12:01.63 Some people can get by with it. 00:12:01.64\00:12:03.14 Alcohol... a lot of people drink alcohol, because they think 00:12:03.17\00:12:06.09 it's going to help them relax at night and go to sleep. 00:12:06.12\00:12:08.29 ...And is that the case? No, it's not the case 00:12:08.32\00:12:10.06 Alcohol BREAKS up your good sleep pattern because it 00:12:10.09\00:12:12.75 changes again... some of those neurotransmitters that's 00:12:12.78\00:12:15.79 going on in your head... Right 00:12:15.82\00:12:17.26 I'm finally... here's one big one in our society that I 00:12:17.29\00:12:20.11 think needs to be talked about, about why Americans 00:12:20.14\00:12:22.44 aren't sleeping well. 00:12:22.47\00:12:23.54 And going back, a third of our life... 00:12:23.57\00:12:25.55 this is a long period of time! 00:12:25.56\00:12:26.78 I'm very passionate about why we've given that away. 00:12:26.81\00:12:29.51 A third... a lot of people are watching too much 00:12:29.54\00:12:34.08 television... #1 Yeah 00:12:34.11\00:12:35.62 And I think that stimulates the mind. 00:12:35.65\00:12:38.00 One way or the other, before you go to bed... 00:12:38.03\00:12:39.91 I mean, you know, there are not too many good shows anymore 00:12:39.94\00:12:43.31 Of course, the shows on 3ABN make exception to that 00:12:43.34\00:12:47.12 And also, the sports, sporting events 00:12:47.15\00:12:51.32 You know, everyone gets revved up and excited, 00:12:51.35\00:12:53.85 and when you get revved up, and excited, those chemicals 00:12:53.88\00:12:55.91 that make the stress hormones go up, and it's a whole 00:12:55.94\00:12:59.16 cascade of events... so we can't turn off that clock! 00:12:59.19\00:13:01.98 ...And video games Yeah, video games are just 00:13:02.01\00:13:04.78 a host of things... 00:13:04.81\00:13:05.89 And I think in talking to people about getting good 00:13:05.92\00:13:08.60 sleep, I want to encourage everyone out there 00:13:08.63\00:13:10.67 to look at the stimulants you have before you go to bed 00:13:10.70\00:13:14.06 We want to turn OFF the senses and not turn ON the senses 00:13:14.07\00:13:18.22 Well I think, Brenda, I hope we can get at the root cause 00:13:18.25\00:13:21.44 of yours, but let's go to another question now 00:13:21.47\00:13:24.74 Let's go to a question from Max, in Texas 00:13:24.77\00:13:27.25 He writes, "How do I know if I'm getting enough sleep?" 00:13:27.28\00:13:31.84 Well, that's a good question since we're talking about sleep 00:13:31.87\00:13:34.35 It's a difficult question, actually 00:13:34.38\00:13:35.88 And we hear this frequently... 00:13:35.91\00:13:37.40 How many hours of sleep do you need to feel well? 00:13:37.43\00:13:41.00 Or to know that you're getting enough sleep? 00:13:41.03\00:13:43.13 And how do you know you're getting enough sleep? 00:13:43.16\00:13:44.75 I don't know... everybody's different... 00:13:44.78\00:13:45.93 Bill Clinton says he only needed 4 hours of sleep per night 00:13:45.96\00:13:49.34 to exist as our President. 00:13:49.37\00:13:51.37 Well that's not very much... 4 hours 00:13:51.40\00:13:53.39 I would have wanted him to sleep a little bit more 00:13:53.42\00:13:55.06 But it goes back to saying that everybody is different 00:13:55.09\00:13:59.07 One of the things... you know, how do you KNOW? 00:13:59.10\00:14:01.79 That's a good way, and I think you have to think about it 00:14:01.82\00:14:04.06 And, I think that in sleep, you have to treat sleep 00:14:04.09\00:14:07.24 like a job... You want to do it well 00:14:07.27\00:14:09.71 ...you want to learn about your body, 00:14:09.74\00:14:11.27 find out about your sleep patterns, and OPTIMIZE it 00:14:11.30\00:14:14.57 And, one of the things that we know is... 00:14:14.60\00:14:16.35 If you have to wake up to an alarm clock, 00:14:16.38\00:14:19.13 maybe you're not getting enough good sleep... okay 00:14:19.16\00:14:23.00 A second thing is if you're tired in the day, 00:14:23.03\00:14:25.50 we KNOW that you're not getting good sleep 00:14:25.53\00:14:28.27 ALSO, frequently people that are not getting enough sleep 00:14:28.30\00:14:30.92 are involved in more accidents Correct 00:14:30.95\00:14:33.04 You know... they do CRAZY stuff... 00:14:33.07\00:14:34.85 They get in car accidents. 00:14:34.88\00:14:36.41 We see in people, one sign that might not be 00:14:36.44\00:14:39.38 getting enough sleep is frequent colds 00:14:39.41\00:14:41.58 They get colds a lot, and infections... 00:14:41.61\00:14:43.17 Lowered immune system 00:14:43.20\00:14:44.18 But when at night, when you don't get enough sleep, 00:14:44.21\00:14:47.03 the immune system is affected 00:14:47.06\00:14:48.75 There are these cells in the body called... 00:14:48.76\00:14:50.16 "natural killer cells" 00:14:50.19\00:14:51.75 And, Dan, these go around and really scarf up those 00:14:51.78\00:14:55.25 things that aren't supposed to be there. 00:14:55.28\00:14:57.09 We know that people that don't sleep just don't 00:14:57.12\00:14:59.09 make these to the degree that people does 00:14:59.12\00:15:01.64 Another thing that might be a sign... 00:15:01.67\00:15:04.61 this is a little bit off... and you're going to have to 00:15:04.64\00:15:06.61 follow me with this one... 00:15:06.64\00:15:07.67 A sign that you're not getting enough sleep is 00:15:07.68\00:15:09.81 people getting fat! 00:15:09.84\00:15:11.91 Now would you believe that? No... 00:15:11.94\00:15:13.63 People getting fat could be a sign... 00:15:13.66\00:15:15.55 as you're not getting enough sleep 00:15:15.58\00:15:16.68 Well, what goes on in your brain... 00:15:16.69\00:15:19.19 when you're not getting enough sleep... 00:15:19.23\00:15:21.51 there's a hormone called "growth hormone" 00:15:21.54\00:15:23.79 that helps people grow... 00:15:23.82\00:15:25.07 And you've heard that kids grow at night when they sleep 00:15:25.10\00:15:27.70 Well, at night, that's when the growth hormone really kicks in. 00:15:27.73\00:15:30.91 But at night, if you're not sleeping well, 00:15:30.92\00:15:33.70 the growth hormone levels could go down 00:15:33.73\00:15:36.49 And if your growth hormone levels go down, 00:15:36.52\00:15:38.55 guess what happens? 00:15:38.59\00:15:39.56 You're not growing, you're not metabolizing much, 00:15:39.57\00:15:42.06 you could... say you're putting on extra pounds.. Right 00:15:42.09\00:15:45.02 And another thing that could happen... 00:15:45.05\00:15:46.47 ...you wake up tired the next day, 00:15:46.50\00:15:48.16 you're stressed out... 00:15:48.19\00:15:49.25 And how do people deal with stress... some people? 00:15:49.28\00:15:51.59 I deal with it very poorly. 00:15:51.62\00:15:54.02 But some people EAT... 00:15:54.05\00:15:56.24 You know, they wake up and they don't feel good in 00:15:56.27\00:15:58.16 the morning, so what are they going to get? 00:15:58.19\00:15:59.71 You know, more things that adversely thought... 00:15:59.74\00:16:03.13 they might get some more donuts... 00:16:03.16\00:16:04.70 They might say, "Well, let's have a cappuccino or something 00:16:04.73\00:16:07.47 to get the day going... 00:16:07.50\00:16:08.79 And all along, they're not dealing with the 00:16:08.82\00:16:10.63 root called stress 00:16:10.66\00:16:11.72 Now another thing that goes down is there's a hormone 00:16:11.75\00:16:14.44 in the brain that's called "leptin" 00:16:14.47\00:16:16.56 Leptin is a very important hormone that says... "I'm full" 00:16:16.59\00:16:19.92 And if you're not making this leptin hormone, 00:16:19.93\00:16:22.20 you're always not feeling this "full" 00:16:22.23\00:16:24.37 and this happens in people that don't sleep well 00:16:24.40\00:16:26.37 Now, are there medications that can take over for leptin? 00:16:26.40\00:16:30.10 Not really... not that I know of. 00:16:30.13\00:16:32.21 It's just sleep... God has made the body to need sleep... Right 00:16:32.22\00:16:37.30 And with that sleep, you have restorative patterns 00:16:37.33\00:16:39.44 and your brain does things at sleep that 00:16:39.45\00:16:41.19 it can't do during the day. 00:16:41.22\00:16:42.38 It processes memories... it makes these hormones 00:16:42.42\00:16:45.00 like leptin that says, "I'm full" 00:16:45.03\00:16:46.78 It does a lot of things... 00:16:46.79\00:16:47.78 The brain is a busy place... even when you're not 00:16:47.81\00:16:50.09 conscious to it. Right 00:16:50.12\00:16:51.36 And a lot of people, when they think about sleep, 00:16:51.39\00:16:53.01 they don't think, "Well, my brain has to go to a 00:16:53.04\00:16:55.46 different environment for a while to get its job done 00:16:55.49\00:16:59.02 So, they're not letting their brain get it's job done 00:16:59.05\00:17:01.26 It's like, you know, you're working all the time... 00:17:01.29\00:17:03.92 and the brain is still working, 00:17:03.95\00:17:05.60 but it's doing a different type of work... 00:17:05.63\00:17:07.23 And see, that goes back to what I was having problems with 00:17:07.26\00:17:09.66 ...My brain never shut down at night. Right 00:17:09.69\00:17:12.23 And different parts need to work 00:17:12.26\00:17:13.81 And other things... Have you ever heard the comment 00:17:13.84\00:17:15.68 that... "I need my beauty sleep?" Yes 00:17:15.71\00:17:18.08 Do you know that studies have shown that people that 00:17:18.11\00:17:21.13 don't get sleep, AGE must faster... 00:17:21.16\00:17:23.87 They get wrinkles... the full 9 yards 00:17:23.90\00:17:26.27 And it's sort of the same process we're talking about 00:17:26.30\00:17:28.93 Resting... I view resting as therapy for many things... okay 00:17:28.96\00:17:33.67 In the Bible, Genesis 2... 00:17:33.70\00:17:35.47 The God of the Universe worked 6 days... 00:17:35.50\00:17:38.26 and then what did He do? He rested. 00:17:38.29\00:17:39.78 He rested a full day. 00:17:39.82\00:17:41.06 And, He set up day and night. 00:17:41.09\00:17:43.22 And if this rest was good enough for Him, 00:17:43.25\00:17:44.96 there must have been a master plan... Correct 00:17:44.99\00:17:47.19 And we see... "Well, why do we get all these diseases?" 00:17:47.22\00:17:49.50 "Why do we have all these problems?" 00:17:49.51\00:17:50.87 "Why do we have all these stresses?" 00:17:50.90\00:17:52.52 One of the problems, I think, is not getting enough sleep. 00:17:52.55\00:17:55.61 So, getting back to Max's question... 00:17:55.64\00:17:58.54 Some of the things we talked about... the alarm clock, 00:17:58.57\00:18:00.84 the tired, the accidents, the frequent health problems 00:18:00.87\00:18:03.40 Max, are you getting wrinkles early? 00:18:03.43\00:18:06.51 You know, maybe that's a sign. 00:18:06.54\00:18:08.00 But all these might be a sign that you're 00:18:08.01\00:18:09.66 not getting enough sleep. 00:18:09.69\00:18:11.08 All right, let's go to Fred in North Carolina... 00:18:11.09\00:18:17.71 He says, "My wife told me that I have sleep apnea. " 00:18:17.74\00:18:21.19 She is not a doctor, but does read a lot. Oh... okay 00:18:21.22\00:18:25.76 There you have it! Could she be right? 00:18:25.79\00:18:28.10 Well, Fred, take it from a man that's married... 00:18:28.13\00:18:32.47 My wife is always right! 00:18:32.50\00:18:34.35 And you're going to have to treat it that way. Mine is too. 00:18:34.38\00:18:36.90 Fred, you're going to have to just treat it that way 00:18:36.93\00:18:38.44 You know, your wife is right... 00:18:38.47\00:18:39.67 And in this case, Fred, you know off the record, 00:18:39.70\00:18:41.87 she IS right about this one. 00:18:41.90\00:18:43.05 You could very well have sleep apnea. 00:18:43.08\00:18:45.19 And sleep apnea is a medical condition where at night 00:18:45.22\00:18:49.78 you don't breathe... 00:18:49.81\00:18:51.61 Sleep apnea... apnea means periods where 00:18:51.64\00:18:55.15 you're not breathing at night 00:18:55.16\00:18:57.11 And the sort of characteristic breathing pattern 00:18:57.14\00:19:01.01 is like this... 00:19:01.04\00:19:04.70 they do that over, and over and over 00:19:04.73\00:19:06.72 And physiologically, when that happens, 00:19:06.75\00:19:09.50 the oxygen levels go down in the body... Right 00:19:09.53\00:19:12.17 So the tissues don't get renewed... 00:19:12.20\00:19:14.21 You can have high blood pressures in the lungs... 00:19:14.22\00:19:16.36 it can cause all sorts of problems... 00:19:16.39\00:19:18.20 The heart has to pump harder 00:19:18.23\00:19:19.62 It can cause funny heart rhythms... numerous things 00:19:19.65\00:19:22.61 Recently, sleep apnea, they say, What was that football player, 00:19:22.64\00:19:25.99 the Green Bay Packers, "Reggie"... White? 00:19:26.02\00:19:28.42 Reggie White! 00:19:28.45\00:19:29.43 He actually had sleep apnea... a big old strapping guy, 00:19:29.46\00:19:33.23 very young... He had this as a complication 00:19:33.24\00:19:35.97 Nowadays, Fred, a lot of people are walking around with 00:19:35.98\00:19:39.49 sleep apnea, and they walk around it their whole lives 00:19:39.52\00:19:42.41 and they never realize they don't have it 00:19:42.44\00:19:44.53 The cells in the body aren't getting enough oxygen... Right 00:19:44.56\00:19:47.90 So, the symptoms of sleep apnea, Dan, 00:19:47.91\00:19:50.23 people that have it... 00:19:50.26\00:19:51.48 They're tired all the time 00:19:51.51\00:19:53.51 They have headaches 00:19:53.52\00:19:55.39 They could have high blood pressure 00:19:55.42\00:19:57.54 They're irritable... because they're not sleeping 00:19:57.57\00:20:00.62 They make lots of mistakes... 00:20:00.63\00:20:02.32 It's a major problem... A difficult thing to go through 00:20:02.35\00:20:05.87 I had a cousin at one time, that had this same situation 00:20:05.90\00:20:10.50 and he would go to sleep at a red light! 00:20:10.53\00:20:13.35 And... people would come, and have to wake him up 00:20:13.38\00:20:16.09 to get him to go through the red light... 00:20:16.12\00:20:17.79 so I thought that was kind of a dangerous situation... 00:20:17.82\00:20:21.60 How is he doing now? 00:20:21.63\00:20:22.72 He is,... well, taking care of it. 00:20:22.75\00:20:26.47 Now, we have a video, a slide that we want to show up 00:20:26.50\00:20:31.46 about the different aspects of sleep apnea 00:20:31.49\00:20:33.76 and, going over the consequences... 00:20:33.79\00:20:36.82 What happens when you have sleep apnea? 00:20:36.85\00:20:38.82 We talked about the fatigue, being tired all the time 00:20:38.85\00:20:41.36 Headaches might be a symptom 00:20:41.39\00:20:43.43 High blood pressure... we talked about the abnormal heart rhythms 00:20:43.46\00:20:46.62 and we put strain on the heart because it has to pump 00:20:46.65\00:20:49.77 against such high pressures in the lungs. 00:20:49.80\00:20:52.75 So sleep apnea is a problem that we need to deal with 00:20:52.78\00:20:59.82 What are several ways or applications that they use 00:20:59.85\00:21:04.67 in the medical field to deal with sleep apnea? 00:21:04.70\00:21:07.58 A couple of things... I think the most useful thing is 00:21:07.61\00:21:11.91 losing weight and exercising. 00:21:11.94\00:21:13.48 They say that if you can lose about 15 pounds, 00:21:13.51\00:21:15.73 often you can treat sleep apnea successfully... 00:21:15.76\00:21:18.30 But usually, it's because of the airway... 00:21:18.31\00:21:20.19 there's too much pressure on it, 00:21:20.22\00:21:21.48 or the muscle tone in the tongue is poor... Right 00:21:21.51\00:21:24.16 Sometimes they can cut an area in the back of your throat 00:21:24.19\00:21:27.10 to let more air in and out. 00:21:27.13\00:21:28.82 But the most common type of treatment is where they 00:21:28.85\00:21:31.13 put a mask... it's called a "sleep mask" 00:21:31.16\00:21:33.89 and it blows air in 00:21:33.92\00:21:35.62 And what I try to do in the management of 00:21:35.65\00:21:37.65 sleep apnea, is hit it on 2-folds 00:21:37.69\00:21:39.63 I try to get to the root of the cause 00:21:39.66\00:21:41.57 ...If it's weight loss, lose weight 00:21:41.60\00:21:43.49 ...If it's sleeping in a different position, 00:21:43.50\00:21:45.37 as well as placing the mask until they can do that... Right 00:21:45.38\00:21:48.53 And people that wear the mask it's a pain to wear, 00:21:48.56\00:21:51.32 but they feel so much better for the first time in years 00:21:51.35\00:21:54.08 they've had rest 00:21:54.11\00:21:55.61 It's amazing, so... 00:21:55.64\00:21:57.74 Now with Fred, who's up in North Carolina, 00:21:57.75\00:22:00.81 would he take what his wife says for granted 00:22:00.84\00:22:04.02 ...or would he go to a sleep center 00:22:04.05\00:22:06.24 where they would be able to help him a little bit? 00:22:06.27\00:22:08.32 Dan, what would you do in this situation? 00:22:08.33\00:22:11.36 I think I'd go to the sleep center... 00:22:11.39\00:22:12.89 I think I might... What I would do, Fred, is 00:22:12.92\00:22:15.04 I would tell my wife... 00:22:15.05\00:22:16.21 I'd say, "Honey, you're probably so right, and I think you're 00:22:16.24\00:22:19.59 SO right, that I'm going over to this sleep center... 00:22:19.62\00:22:23.14 and there, they're going to watch me when I sleep 00:22:23.15\00:22:25.04 and they'll hook me up to oxygen monitors, 00:22:25.05\00:22:27.13 and they'll see if my oxygen level goes down 00:22:27.16\00:22:29.28 in the middle of the night, and if I meet criteria for 00:22:29.31\00:22:32.03 sleep apnea, then I'll have aggressive treatment for this. 00:22:32.07\00:22:34.75 If this goes on untreated, 00:22:34.78\00:22:36.11 it creates tons of health problems down the road... Right 00:22:36.14\00:22:39.75 So, I hope that answers your question, Fred, 00:22:39.79\00:22:41.36 ...that's what I would do All righty! 00:22:41.39\00:22:43.81 The next question comes from Dave in Reno... 00:22:43.84\00:22:49.73 He says, "Is there a difference between resting and sleeping?" 00:22:49.76\00:22:53.57 "I rest a lot but sleep only a little. Dave, this is one of the most difficult 00:22:56.85\00:23:00.56 questions I think I have to answer... 00:23:00.59\00:23:03.87 in sorting through resting and sleeping... 00:23:03.90\00:23:06.79 You can be asleep and not get good rest... Right 00:23:06.82\00:23:12.46 And also, you can rest and not sleep 00:23:12.47\00:23:15.49 So, in answering your question, Dan, what I've been trying to do 00:23:15.52\00:23:21.11 in the treatment of people, 00:23:21.14\00:23:22.17 how do you know what's true in life? 00:23:22.20\00:23:23.85 You know, you see... eat this diet, 00:23:23.88\00:23:25.87 high fat diet, low fat diet... 00:23:25.90\00:23:28.38 or being fed everything through the media 00:23:28.41\00:23:30.55 You know, how do you know what's true? 00:23:30.59\00:23:31.96 This medication is so good for you, 00:23:32.00\00:23:33.34 then you take it off the market 00:23:33.37\00:23:35.07 So what I do when it comes to tough questions, 00:23:35.10\00:23:37.57 I try to turn to the Bible, 00:23:37.60\00:23:38.88 and see if the Bible gives us insight 00:23:38.91\00:23:40.63 Like the Day of Rest... 00:23:40.66\00:23:41.78 you know, that only makes sense 00:23:41.81\00:23:43.32 I'm turning to God for our answers... 00:23:43.35\00:23:45.24 The diet, you know, Daniel and his friends... the diet they ate 00:23:45.27\00:23:48.51 But, I want to throw some texts up here in our next slide 00:23:48.54\00:23:52.66 here and give some texts that I wanted to share with Dave 00:23:52.70\00:23:56.24 that might help him a little bit 00:23:56.27\00:23:58.35 Sleep does not necessarily equal rest, 00:23:58.36\00:24:02.09 and one of the texts I like to share is Matthew 11:28 00:24:02.12\00:24:06.61 and that's the text that says... 00:24:06.64\00:24:08.39 "Come unto me, all ye that are heavy laden, 00:24:08.42\00:24:11.47 and I will give you rest. " 00:24:11.50\00:24:13.97 What do we have to do? 00:24:14.00\00:24:15.59 We have to come unto him, and I will GIVE you rest... 00:24:15.62\00:24:18.37 That's a gift! So I will give you 00:24:18.38\00:24:21.56 Now that's not necessarily sleep, but that's a REST 00:24:21.59\00:24:24.06 in itself... "I will GIVE you REST" 00:24:24.09\00:24:26.43 Psalms 37:7... again talks about REST 00:24:26.46\00:24:29.65 And then there's Genesis 2:2, where it says... 00:24:29.68\00:24:32.80 "God worked for 6 days" 00:24:32.81\00:24:34.78 The God of the universe, of the whole universe 00:24:34.81\00:24:38.12 ...What did He do for 1 day? He rested! 00:24:38.15\00:24:39.44 And I don't think He slept at all... 00:24:40.21\00:24:42.07 I mean He might have slept, but He rested, 00:24:42.10\00:24:43.93 so understanding what God means by REST 00:24:43.96\00:24:47.24 I think it's all about, you know, our spirituality 00:24:47.27\00:24:50.05 ...you know, to have that rest, that peace, 00:24:50.08\00:24:52.16 where the mind is allowed to work on other things 00:24:52.19\00:24:54.81 It brings to the mind one more text that I wanted to share 00:24:54.84\00:24:58.65 with everyone... Hebrews 4:9, says... 00:24:58.68\00:25:01.82 "There remains therefore, a REST for the people of God" 00:25:01.85\00:25:06.36 I think that when you have God in your life, 00:25:06.39\00:25:08.62 there's a certain rest that you cannot attain 00:25:08.65\00:25:11.26 any other way. Right, I agree with that 00:25:11.29\00:25:15.47 We've got one more question Okay 00:25:15.50\00:25:20.52 "I'm a truck driver, and my shift is at night, 00:25:20.55\00:25:26.14 I sleep during the day. I am 45... 00:25:26.15\00:25:29.73 Is this hurting my overall health? 00:25:29.76\00:25:32.54 There are so many different aspects 00:25:32.55\00:25:36.42 that could be talked about here. 00:25:36.45\00:25:38.62 There could be a chance if you're not resting well 00:25:38.65\00:25:42.25 during the day, that it could affect you... 00:25:42.28\00:25:44.97 Have you ever worked shift-work? 00:25:45.00\00:25:46.65 Have you ever had to work night? I really haven't. 00:25:46.68\00:25:48.99 Well this question is very dear to me because 00:25:49.02\00:25:53.23 I DO stay up at night, and Tuesday night 00:25:53.26\00:25:55.80 is my call night, as long as weekends, 00:25:55.83\00:25:58.32 and I never sleep well on that night, 00:25:58.35\00:26:00.17 and I do think it affects my health 00:26:00.20\00:26:02.07 because when you break that night/day cycle 00:26:02.10\00:26:04.89 that's not natural, and when you disregard 00:26:04.92\00:26:08.95 one of, sort of, God's Laws, you're going to have some 00:26:08.98\00:26:12.29 consequences, and the consequences that we're 00:26:12.32\00:26:14.92 talking about... the circadian rhythms, you've heard that term 00:26:14.95\00:26:17.79 Yes... the night/day... God created that 00:26:17.82\00:26:21.19 At light, we have a substance, when light comes into us... 00:26:21.22\00:26:24.63 a substance, a sleep substance that's made called melatonin 00:26:24.66\00:26:27.97 And this is released from the pineal gland, 00:26:28.00\00:26:30.46 and this actually helps us sleep a great deal. 00:26:30.49\00:26:33.37 So, I think that when you break this cycle, 00:26:33.40\00:26:36.33 you know, the light/day cycle, these natural chemicals 00:26:36.36\00:26:39.45 that help you have true rest, 00:26:39.48\00:26:41.36 it is disturbed... right thrown off 00:26:41.39\00:26:43.88 And then you get these subsequent health problems 00:26:43.91\00:26:45.84 that we sort of identified with that adversely 00:26:45.87\00:26:50.19 affects everything. 00:26:50.22\00:26:51.70 I've also heard that night shift work basically affects 00:26:51.73\00:26:55.53 your whole quality of life long-term 00:26:55.56\00:26:57.92 And it's probably the same mechanism of this light 00:26:57.95\00:27:01.44 melatonin, pineal... all this is probably as an associate 00:27:01.47\00:27:04.99 Well, we've certainly covered a lot about 00:27:05.00\00:27:07.43 sleep today, Dan... 00:27:07.46\00:27:09.28 I want to thank you for joining us 00:27:09.31\00:27:10.87 I appreciate your inviting me, I've had a great time...
