You know, David wrote: 00:00:37.81\00:00:40.20 Oh! I praise the Lord for I am fearfully 00:00:40.21\00:00:43.18 and wonderfully made. And we are, 00:00:43.19\00:00:45.44 but there are so many things that we do 00:00:45.45\00:00:48.07 to ourselves that actually can ruin our health. 00:00:48.08\00:00:52.36 And today we're gonna be talking about 00:00:52.37\00:00:54.23 something that you're gonna want to hear about. 00:00:54.24\00:00:56.95 And this is, our topic today is stress, 00:00:57.28\00:01:00.86 and how to prevent it and, how to cope 00:01:00.87\00:01:02.35 with it, how to over come it? And we have 00:01:02.36\00:01:04.78 with us an expert, he's a cardiologist from 00:01:04.79\00:01:08.67 the Chattanooga, Tennessee Heart Institute 00:01:08.68\00:01:11.67 and his name is Dr. Jim Marcum. 00:01:12.04\00:01:14.35 Jim, thank you so much for being here today, 00:01:14.36\00:01:16.98 thank you. Now, when we get started on 00:01:16.99\00:01:19.75 this topic I know that we're gonna have an 00:01:19.76\00:01:21.89 audience that is tuned in and listening because 00:01:21.90\00:01:25.00 everyone it seems is experiencing stress in 00:01:25.45\00:01:28.94 today's world, what do you think that is? 00:01:28.95\00:01:31.52 Well, that's right well there's lots of problems 00:01:31.53\00:01:34.63 that are contributing to stress. 00:01:34.64\00:01:36.04 And you know you think about well, 00:01:36.05\00:01:37.80 what is stress? You know, where is it 00:01:38.22\00:01:40.67 around me and today getting back to your 00:01:40.68\00:01:42.84 question what's causing it? Well, our lifestyles 00:01:42.85\00:01:45.61 you know, we're running we think we have to 00:01:45.62\00:01:47.19 work harder and do more. We think we have to 00:01:47.20\00:01:49.84 stay up later at night, we think we have to 00:01:49.85\00:01:51.87 pursue the almighty dollar. You know in some 00:01:51.88\00:01:55.20 parts of the world people are scrounging right now 00:01:55.21\00:01:58.13 to stay out of wars, people are having to fight 00:01:58.14\00:02:01.32 to get the food they have, there is many 00:02:01.33\00:02:03.12 different reasons that cause stress on our body. 00:02:03.13\00:02:05.75 You know as you were saying that I just had 00:02:06.67\00:02:08.98 a thought there are people that are sitting 00:02:08.99\00:02:11.21 at home that are lonely, but maybe they've lost, 00:02:11.22\00:02:14.55 I mean they don't have that fast paced lifestyle. 00:02:14.56\00:02:17.80 Maybe there's a slown down because slowed down, 00:02:17.81\00:02:22.34 yeah, because of either their age, or maybe 00:02:22.35\00:02:27.00 an illness, but that change can cause stress too, 00:02:27.01\00:02:30.85 can't it? Yes, change can cause stress, 00:02:30.86\00:02:33.21 loss of a loved one cause stress, not being happy 00:02:33.63\00:02:37.48 at your job can cause stress, 00:02:37.49\00:02:39.24 sin in your life can cause stress. Amen, amen. 00:02:39.70\00:02:42.64 The food you eat in your life can cause stress; 00:02:42.65\00:02:45.21 the things you do and don't do can cause stress. 00:02:45.22\00:02:47.76 The list goes on and on and on and I bet you 00:02:48.33\00:02:51.62 sometimes when I talk about the subject 00:02:52.05\00:02:53.73 the people just hearing of it, they start to get 00:02:53.74\00:02:56.06 stressed from hearing about stress. 00:02:56.07\00:02:57.85 And sometimes when you hear about stress 00:02:58.32\00:03:00.02 over and over and over you start to get 00:03:00.03\00:03:02.92 stressed and I'm, I'm going to apologized 00:03:02.93\00:03:04.96 I know some people at home right now are getting 00:03:04.97\00:03:07.29 stressed about it, but this is a topic we must 00:03:07.30\00:03:10.14 talk about because stress is truly a disease. 00:03:10.15\00:03:13.51 Amen. Stress leads to disease and I'm afraid 00:03:13.52\00:03:16.17 right now we don't hear enough about it, 00:03:16.18\00:03:18.13 we don't recognize it, we don't have a game plan 00:03:18.14\00:03:20.79 in dealing with stress. That's what we want to 00:03:20.80\00:03:22.25 do today with this program is get people 00:03:22.26\00:03:24.45 a game plan to think about stress as a real disease. 00:03:24.46\00:03:27.33 Now, you are a cardiologist Jim, yes and 00:03:27.69\00:03:30.61 I would like for you to explain what that is to 00:03:30.62\00:03:34.49 our audience? Well, a cardiologist is a 00:03:34.50\00:03:37.06 doctor that's trained in Internal Medicine and 00:03:37.07\00:03:39.93 specifically they trains to deal with the 00:03:39.94\00:03:41.85 diseases of the heart and blood vessels. 00:03:41.86\00:03:43.97 What got me interested in stress? 00:03:44.59\00:03:46.40 Is that stress plays a role in so many these 00:03:46.41\00:03:48.76 chronic cardiovascular diseases, it plays a role 00:03:48.77\00:03:51.57 in high blood pressure and heart attacks, 00:03:51.58\00:03:53.57 it plays a role in people's diet. Did you know 00:03:53.58\00:03:55.54 that some people just a food they eat causes 00:03:55.55\00:03:58.52 and to have stress, but it's truly something 00:03:58.53\00:04:01.42 that is you're gonna hear a lot more 00:04:01.43\00:04:03.52 about the next few years. And I guess what 00:04:03.53\00:04:06.38 really tipped me over is my own life. 00:04:06.39\00:04:08.07 I assessed you know what's going on and 00:04:08.63\00:04:11.55 I said well why don't I feel as good as I do, 00:04:11.56\00:04:14.27 you know why can I do more, why I'm not more 00:04:14.81\00:04:16.80 sharp than I should be? Well, I looked at things 00:04:16.81\00:04:19.59 and I was having a lot of stress in my own life, 00:04:19.60\00:04:21.65 so then I really got to the basics of it. 00:04:21.66\00:04:23.48 Well, that's good and I know that I probably 00:04:23.87\00:04:25.86 need to reevaluate some things as well. 00:04:25.87\00:04:28.06 Well, Jim also has a ministry called 00:04:28.47\00:04:31.33 Heartwise Ministry, and he teaches people 00:04:31.34\00:04:34.25 how to be wise about their lifestyle choices. 00:04:34.80\00:04:38.31 And because of this ministry we have questions 00:04:38.68\00:04:41.22 that have come in from all of around the world. 00:04:41.23\00:04:43.49 And we're gonna be reading some of those 00:04:43.86\00:04:45.34 questions that deal with stress today. 00:04:45.35\00:04:47.14 So, this first question is from Brenda in New York, 00:04:47.59\00:04:50.60 and here's what she writes. My friend Lorry 00:04:51.02\00:04:53.52 works at the desk next to mine, she says I'm 00:04:53.53\00:04:57.02 stressed out, how do you know if you're 00:04:57.03\00:05:00.17 stressed out? Oh! Brenda excellent question, 00:05:00.18\00:05:03.34 most people in fact don't know that they're 00:05:03.75\00:05:05.85 stressed out. One of the worst things you know 00:05:05.86\00:05:08.46 at work, if you're stressed at work and 00:05:08.47\00:05:10.81 don't even know it you could have this stress 00:05:10.82\00:05:13.28 disease for years and not even realize what 00:05:13.29\00:05:15.40 it's doing internally to your body. 00:05:15.41\00:05:17.03 There is a stress you know about the conscious 00:05:17.63\00:05:20.24 stress, but every input that your body gets 00:05:20.25\00:05:22.86 from anywhere. Every in put stored in your 00:05:22.87\00:05:26.61 brain in the subconscious. So, the subconscious 00:05:26.62\00:05:29.42 is working even when you're conscious doesn't 00:05:29.43\00:05:31.22 know about it and it can create physiologic 00:05:31.23\00:05:33.83 manifestations. So, your mind and your body 00:05:33.84\00:05:35.96 are so tightly connected and then all these 00:05:35.97\00:05:39.33 chemicals start to go that deal with the stress, 00:05:39.34\00:05:42.32 the stress hormones. Now, I wanna throw up 00:05:42.73\00:05:44.82 our first graphic today. These are some, 00:05:44.83\00:05:47.30 you know she ask if how do you know 00:05:47.31\00:05:49.24 when you might have stress. Well, some of the 00:05:49.71\00:05:51.82 common symptoms of stress could be are you 00:05:51.83\00:05:54.60 having headaches, do you have unexplained 00:05:54.61\00:05:57.33 chest pain, are your muscles tight, 00:05:57.34\00:05:59.54 are you having problem sleeping, do you have 00:05:59.97\00:06:02.20 acid that bubbles up from your stomach, 00:06:02.21\00:06:04.26 are you having high blood pressure, 00:06:05.12\00:06:06.64 are you having palpitations, or are you 00:06:07.06\00:06:09.33 shortness of breath? All of these Shelley 00:06:09.34\00:06:13.27 can be symptoms of stress, but I think this is 00:06:13.28\00:06:17.15 the best one that I have for the audience 00:06:17.16\00:06:19.16 in a person that I think having lots of symptoms, 00:06:19.17\00:06:21.94 you know, you go to the doctor and say, 00:06:21.95\00:06:23.21 oh! My chest hurts and I do a lot of tests 00:06:23.22\00:06:25.67 I can't find anything wrong. And I think well 00:06:25.68\00:06:27.99 maybe they have the disease of stress. 00:06:28.00\00:06:29.54 Well, one of the uniform symptoms is they 00:06:30.06\00:06:31.93 don't sleep well at night. So, I always asked people 00:06:31.94\00:06:35.25 do you sleep well at night? And if the 00:06:35.26\00:06:37.77 answer is no, you have to say well maybe 00:06:37.78\00:06:40.12 an addition to everything else they're having 00:06:40.13\00:06:41.88 some underlined stress. So, Brenda back to your 00:06:41.89\00:06:45.15 question, how do you know if you're stressed? 00:06:45.16\00:06:47.10 Well, do you have any of these symptoms and 00:06:47.11\00:06:49.61 secondly are you sleeping well at night? 00:06:49.62\00:06:52.42 Oh! It would be good one and it's interesting that 00:06:53.12\00:06:55.51 often people around us are the ones who recognize 00:06:55.52\00:06:58.40 it you know, my husband told me once, 00:06:58.41\00:07:00.48 honey I think you're over working you're 00:07:00.49\00:07:02.47 getting stressed out. And I said, 00:07:02.48\00:07:04.06 that's ridiculous, but I went to a doctor 00:07:04.07\00:07:06.36 and as I was talking to him he said, you're gonna 00:07:06.37\00:07:08.16 burn out your adrenal glands. 00:07:08.17\00:07:09.59 He said, you are going at high speed 24x7 00:07:09.60\00:07:12.99 and he said you're killing yourself. 00:07:13.40\00:07:15.03 So, I took it seriously. Okay, the second 00:07:15.43\00:07:19.30 question comes from Andrew in Australia and he says, 00:07:19.86\00:07:23.43 my job in Sydney requires travel four days a week, 00:07:23.44\00:07:26.92 I know this kind of schedule is not good for 00:07:27.27\00:07:29.85 my body, what does stress actually do to the body? 00:07:29.86\00:07:34.34 Andrew, that's a good question and I appreciate 00:07:35.33\00:07:37.43 I've had quite a few comments from Australia, 00:07:37.44\00:07:40.12 so I know the people in Australia are very 00:07:40.13\00:07:41.99 interested about their health, but stress 00:07:42.00\00:07:44.83 and I'm gonna step on a lot of toes here. 00:07:44.84\00:07:46.64 Especially that my friends the truck drivers, 00:07:47.38\00:07:49.67 I see lots of them they also go, the salesman, 00:07:49.68\00:07:52.84 the people that travel, the people that are 00:07:52.85\00:07:54.38 on the go a lot they frequently have 00:07:54.39\00:07:57.25 high levels of stress. And now, stress can come 00:07:57.26\00:08:00.39 from anywhere, it come from relationships, 00:08:00.40\00:08:02.88 it can come from pain, it can come from 00:08:02.89\00:08:05.22 you know the things we eat, the things we think 00:08:05.53\00:08:07.68 about change, loss of love ones, divorce is a 00:08:07.75\00:08:11.00 big cause of stress, job is a big cause of stress. 00:08:11.01\00:08:14.55 Not having good relationship with people, 00:08:14.56\00:08:16.64 but there's two types of stress that I want to 00:08:16.96\00:08:19.14 talk to Andrew about, one is the acute stress 00:08:19.15\00:08:22.46 you know the fighter flight. 00:08:22.84\00:08:24.04 Someone's threatening you know to, to kill you, 00:08:25.14\00:08:27.68 okay you're gonna get your muscles up and 00:08:28.17\00:08:29.82 you're gonna battle with them, and you're gonna 00:08:29.83\00:08:31.51 battle and battle that's the good type of stress, 00:08:31.52\00:08:34.01 that's a kind of stress you want. 00:08:34.02\00:08:35.47 But in chronic stress your body is doing that 00:08:36.13\00:08:38.81 all the time. One of the hormones that your body 00:08:38.82\00:08:41.74 makes is called epinephrine or adrenaline. 00:08:41.75\00:08:44.31 And this is the hormone that does all sorts of 00:08:44.88\00:08:46.77 things in your body. For instance, it constricts 00:08:46.78\00:08:49.72 blood vessels; it gets the body ready to fight 00:08:49.73\00:08:52.51 so all your muscles, all throughout the body 00:08:52.52\00:08:54.56 get tense, 'cause you're ready to fight a battle. 00:08:54.57\00:08:56.40 Yeah. You mobilize your food from different places 00:08:56.41\00:09:00.21 'cause you're getting ready to fight, 00:09:00.22\00:09:01.39 you're not you know, you're gonna get the food, 00:09:01.40\00:09:02.79 so that acid is in the stomach just churning 00:09:02.80\00:09:05.41 'cause you're ready to digest whatever 00:09:05.42\00:09:06.92 energy you can. Your immune system, 00:09:06.93\00:09:09.43 we don't need an immune system in this course 00:09:09.44\00:09:11.60 and we're gonna move our body 00:09:11.61\00:09:12.94 energies in order to fight. Your mind, 00:09:12.95\00:09:15.10 it gets it's just racing a millions times a minute. 00:09:15.11\00:09:17.36 Your heart starts to speed up okay, your, 00:09:17.37\00:09:20.81 the muscles around your eyes tight 'cause 00:09:21.39\00:09:23.12 you're getting ready to try the thing yourself 00:09:23.13\00:09:25.19 to stay alive. Another hormone that goes up is 00:09:25.20\00:09:27.99 called cortisol and this helps you know, 00:09:28.00\00:09:30.32 in our food process, it helps you know, 00:09:31.16\00:09:34.17 the sugars in our body and things of that nature. 00:09:34.18\00:09:36.24 Well, this hormone also changes, when these 00:09:36.25\00:09:39.04 changes occur chronically, chronically not acutely, 00:09:39.05\00:09:42.51 but over the long term your body can't deal with it. 00:09:42.52\00:09:45.40 Lets stop there for just a moment. Yeah. 00:09:45.41\00:09:46.82 Because those are words not everyone is 00:09:46.83\00:09:48.67 familiar with. Okay. But when you're talking 00:09:48.68\00:09:50.47 about the acute stress reaction that means 00:09:50.48\00:09:53.10 when it just it happens rapidly, it's a sudden 00:09:53.11\00:09:56.46 on slot of this and if it, if you require that 00:09:56.47\00:09:59.85 fight or flight that's good, but if this is 00:10:00.41\00:10:04.05 something that you are living in this condition 00:10:04.06\00:10:06.84 chronically means that if it's a chronic condition 00:10:06.85\00:10:09.61 it's ongoing and then you are wearing your 00:10:09.62\00:10:14.63 body out because there's all of these chemical 00:10:14.64\00:10:17.16 changes going on in your brain and in your body 00:10:17.17\00:10:19.64 and you may not be aware of that, but you're 00:10:20.07\00:10:22.87 really killing yourself, that's right, with stress. 00:10:22.88\00:10:25.63 And that's why I call this disease; this is really 00:10:25.64\00:10:27.76 a disease because clearly your chemical makeup 00:10:27.77\00:10:30.74 is dramatically changed from this chronic stress. 00:10:30.75\00:10:33.57 I think of a patient that I had not too long ago 00:10:33.94\00:10:36.63 and get back to Andrew's question. 00:10:37.08\00:10:38.81 He was a truck driver, he didn't sleep well 00:10:39.22\00:10:42.73 at night, he ate poor foods, he was having 00:10:42.74\00:10:45.06 some relationship problems, he had lost a 00:10:45.07\00:10:47.62 loved one with this chronic stress just 00:10:47.63\00:10:49.69 drove him crazy. His chemicals all change in 00:10:49.70\00:10:53.09 body, his blood pressure went up, he had acid 00:10:53.10\00:10:55.22 and indigestion. And, and finally when he was 00:10:55.23\00:10:57.76 able to realize he had this and worked through 00:10:57.77\00:11:00.41 this stress one step at a time his symptom 00:11:00.42\00:11:03.45 started to improve, 'cause this is a terrible 00:11:03.46\00:11:05.88 disease that we have. And so, Andrew what does 00:11:05.89\00:11:09.04 stress actually do in the body? Well, it changes 00:11:09.05\00:11:12.09 your entire chemical makeup. Not only the 00:11:12.10\00:11:14.57 chemicals that fight acute stress, but the way 00:11:14.58\00:11:16.84 you think. Have you ever been under stressful 00:11:16.85\00:11:18.92 situation? Your brain just doesn't, it works 00:11:18.93\00:11:20.84 differently it's not as logical, it's doing things 00:11:20.85\00:11:23.42 drastic things to stay alive, it's not thinking 00:11:23.43\00:11:26.23 that logical pathway that you would get in 00:11:26.24\00:11:28.76 non-stressful situation. So, you overreact 00:11:28.77\00:11:31.01 that point. Yes usually, usually good. Okay. 00:11:31.02\00:11:33.63 Well, let's go onto Marlene's question. 00:11:34.05\00:11:36.33 And Marlene is from Ohio, and she writes I know 00:11:36.34\00:11:39.93 I'm under stress, there are too many things 00:11:39.94\00:11:42.76 going on in my life to list them all, 00:11:42.77\00:11:45.34 what should I do to combat the stress? 00:11:45.89\00:11:48.98 Well, Marlene the first thing that you've done 00:11:49.43\00:11:51.83 is recognized that you have stress, and that's 00:11:51.84\00:11:54.18 very important, and the second thing that you've 00:11:54.19\00:11:56.04 done that is so good is you're seeking help. 00:11:56.05\00:11:58.48 Many people that are under stress first they 00:11:59.52\00:12:03.27 might admit they have it, but then they won't do 00:12:03.28\00:12:05.63 anything to change what's going on in their lives. 00:12:05.64\00:12:08.14 They say, oh! My job is too demanding, 00:12:08.15\00:12:10.74 I'm working two and three jobs. I'm doing 00:12:10.75\00:12:13.10 this, I'm doing that. I'm staying up at night, 00:12:13.11\00:12:15.26 but they're not willing to make a change. 00:12:15.27\00:12:17.14 And they're thinking that, you're in and you're out, 00:12:17.15\00:12:19.35 they're gonna feel great, but sooner or later 00:12:19.36\00:12:21.88 this stress is gonna take up for you. 00:12:21.89\00:12:23.87 Now, I want to talk about the way people 00:12:23.88\00:12:26.02 do deal with stress, 'cause there's different 00:12:26.03\00:12:27.74 types of ways people do. And now, everyone 00:12:27.75\00:12:30.03 has stress and you're dealing with it one way 00:12:30.04\00:12:32.57 or the other Shelley. Right. I mean you just 00:12:32.58\00:12:34.54 can't ignore it, but let's, let's throw up a 00:12:34.55\00:12:36.52 graphic, about in what ways some people 00:12:36.53\00:12:38.29 deal with stress? And see, if people in the 00:12:38.30\00:12:40.82 audience might do some of these mechanisms 00:12:40.83\00:12:44.16 in order. One is eating, do you know anyone 00:12:44.17\00:12:47.07 that eats when they're stressed out? I know, 00:12:47.08\00:12:49.13 a lot of people do. Okay, overworking, some people 00:12:49.14\00:12:52.03 just work more-and-more when they're stress, 00:12:52.04\00:12:53.73 and some people do the opposite, they say, 00:12:53.74\00:12:55.20 well I'm not gonna work at all, I'm just gonna 00:12:55.21\00:12:56.76 lay at home in bed and do nothing. 00:12:56.77\00:12:58.31 Some people were turn to drugs such as alcohol, 00:12:59.11\00:13:02.47 cigarettes, caffeine and cocaine. 00:13:02.48\00:13:04.70 Some people take medications for stress; 00:13:05.93\00:13:08.32 they'd rather take a chronic medicine like 00:13:08.33\00:13:10.31 Valium and Benzo. I know some people the way 00:13:10.32\00:13:12.58 they deal with stress is they spend money. 00:13:12.59\00:13:14.04 You know, they run up the credit card debt. 00:13:14.42\00:13:16.19 And you hate to blame every you know, 00:13:16.60\00:13:18.60 spending money on stress, but it could be 00:13:18.61\00:13:20.68 a symptom of stress. People have to deal with 00:13:20.69\00:13:23.81 stress in some way the other. When you have 00:13:23.82\00:13:25.70 stress in your life you just, you just sound say, 00:13:25.71\00:13:27.98 I've stress and not deal with it. Now, you've to 00:13:27.99\00:13:29.77 look at yourself honestly and say, well if when I 00:13:29.78\00:13:33.01 have stress how am I dealing with my stress? 00:13:33.02\00:13:35.95 And you know it occurred to me as we're 00:13:36.47\00:13:37.83 going through this list that every one of those 00:13:37.84\00:13:40.51 things, if you're eating because you're stressed 00:13:40.52\00:13:42.85 it makes you more stressed. Right. 00:13:42.86\00:13:44.64 Because you're, you start gaining weight or 00:13:44.65\00:13:46.73 you're having these problems, if you're out 00:13:46.74\00:13:48.53 spending money and running up your credit 00:13:48.54\00:13:50.26 card because you're stressed and when those 00:13:50.27\00:13:52.35 bills come in you're more stressed. And certainly, 00:13:52.36\00:13:55.17 if you're dealing or if you're using some kind 00:13:55.18\00:13:57.70 of a drug to help you or caffeine or stimulator 00:13:57.71\00:14:00.60 or something like that, it ends up 00:14:00.61\00:14:02.46 making the problem worse, doesn't it? 00:14:02.47\00:14:04.33 It does, but most people nowadays, when you 00:14:04.34\00:14:07.34 think about it they are dealing with stress 00:14:07.35\00:14:09.49 in maladaptive ways. They're literally 00:14:09.50\00:14:11.93 destroying the bodies that God wonderfully 00:14:11.94\00:14:14.21 made for them. And that's why when you 00:14:14.22\00:14:16.67 think about stress getting back to the good 00:14:16.68\00:14:18.67 ways of dealing with stress. You know, 00:14:18.68\00:14:20.63 we have to focus on I think biblical ways in 00:14:21.06\00:14:24.25 dealing with the stress. You know, casting our 00:14:24.26\00:14:26.47 burdens on someone else, not trying to take 00:14:26.48\00:14:28.98 everyone's burdens. Let's show the graphic 00:14:28.99\00:14:31.77 about some of the, the good ways to cope 00:14:31.78\00:14:33.69 with stress. One, this is I think the only true 00:14:33.70\00:14:38.20 way to deal with chronic stress is an active 00:14:38.21\00:14:41.01 spiritual life. Amen. You have to cast your 00:14:41.02\00:14:44.53 burdens on your Lord. Amen. If you look 00:14:44.54\00:14:47.88 the way when Christ dealt with stress, 00:14:47.89\00:14:49.70 He went to His Father in prayer over-and-over. 00:14:49.71\00:14:52.74 That's the way He dealt with stress. He prayed, 00:14:52.75\00:14:54.59 He cast His burdens, He got them off Him. 00:14:54.60\00:14:57.00 So, you have to have an active spiritual life 00:14:57.42\00:14:59.71 to deal with stress. Another thing that helps 00:14:59.72\00:15:02.07 stress immensely is exercise, 'cause exercise 00:15:02.08\00:15:05.52 increases all of the hormones that help 00:15:05.53\00:15:08.60 fight stress. Proper nutrition is another very, 00:15:08.61\00:15:12.16 very important way to deal with chronic stress. 00:15:12.17\00:15:15.16 And it only make sense and, if you put good 00:15:15.17\00:15:17.55 gas in your car. Right. The car is only 00:15:17.56\00:15:19.79 gonna run better. Now, we see examples of 00:15:19.80\00:15:22.47 this biblically throughout all times, 00:15:22.48\00:15:24.22 if you think back to Daniel and his friends 00:15:24.23\00:15:26.46 of another reason we have to also recognize 00:15:26.89\00:15:29.73 that we have stress and those are some of the 00:15:29.74\00:15:31.33 things that we need to talk about. 00:15:31.34\00:15:32.71 Another thing that's very important is getting 00:15:33.48\00:15:35.67 appropriate rest, getting away, changing a scenery, 00:15:35.68\00:15:39.59 getting your mind away from all those things, 00:15:39.60\00:15:41.47 letting your minds recharge are all important 00:15:41.48\00:15:44.38 things in dealing with chronic stress. 00:15:44.39\00:15:46.05 Now, let's for a few seconds talk about 00:15:46.38\00:15:47.97 some things. You bet. Anyone jump out that 00:15:47.98\00:15:50.09 you that see way of, productive 00:15:50.10\00:15:51.81 way of dealing with stress? 00:15:51.82\00:15:52.89 Well, I know that my only way really of 00:15:53.17\00:15:56.59 dealing with stress at the time is just turning 00:15:56.60\00:15:59.60 my eyes on the Lord, I need to do some more, 00:15:59.61\00:16:01.92 I need do exercise more, I definitely need to 00:16:01.93\00:16:04.56 just get away with a change of scenery, 00:16:04.99\00:16:06.87 change you know, rest more. The interesting 00:16:06.88\00:16:10.47 thing about being in ministry is that 00:16:10.48\00:16:13.65 often on the Sabbath. Oh! Yeah. 00:16:13.66\00:16:15.84 Which is the rest day I'm ministering, so it's 00:16:15.85\00:16:19.01 not and I love doing it, but that doesn't mean 00:16:19.02\00:16:22.87 it ends up being really restful for me because 00:16:22.88\00:16:25.34 there's a lot preparation time that goes in and 00:16:25.35\00:16:27.42 then you spend maybe four to six hours 00:16:27.43\00:16:30.03 speaking, it's not necessarily a day of rest. 00:16:30.04\00:16:32.82 Right. So, I can say a lot of things 00:16:32.83\00:16:34.91 I need to change. Well, you know 00:16:34.92\00:16:36.17 I agree so much with that day of rest. 00:16:36.18\00:16:39.75 You know, and God knew when He setup, 00:16:39.76\00:16:41.89 setup this world that it was gonna be stressful. 00:16:41.90\00:16:44.65 Right. You know, and God work six days 00:16:45.15\00:16:47.13 and He literally took a day off for rest 00:16:47.14\00:16:50.16 not only spiritual, spiritual rest, 00:16:50.17\00:16:53.20 but a physical rest. We could rejuvenate 00:16:53.21\00:16:56.40 our body. Now you know, you might say, 00:16:56.41\00:16:58.90 well if I'm not truly spiritual and physically 00:16:58.91\00:17:01.70 resting on that day, can I really have the 00:17:01.71\00:17:04.44 blessings of that day? I don't know it's something 00:17:04.45\00:17:06.94 to think about. Well, I do know that as far as 00:17:06.95\00:17:10.16 the priest ministering in the temple I know 00:17:10.17\00:17:12.06 I'm not breaking the Sabbath. Yes, right. 00:17:12.07\00:17:13.74 But it is something that I do realize that from 00:17:13.75\00:17:16.78 time-to-time I think about because I am 00:17:16.79\00:17:19.40 ministering on that day I should maybe take 00:17:19.41\00:17:21.31 another day off too, but there is a lot of things 00:17:21.32\00:17:24.78 that people are not doing because we are 00:17:24.79\00:17:27.42 caught up in this high tech fast paced society 00:17:27.43\00:17:33.27 and it seems to me that I don't know about you, 00:17:33.70\00:17:36.90 you may not be old enough to remember, 00:17:36.91\00:17:38.30 but I can remember when federal express and 00:17:38.31\00:17:41.51 UPS first came out and you could get something 00:17:41.52\00:17:45.30 somewhere overnight, we thought it was amazing. 00:17:45.31\00:17:48.43 And then the fax came out Jim and it first 00:17:48.86\00:17:51.67 it was like oh! We could send a document like that. 00:17:51.68\00:17:54.21 And it was so astonishing, but within just months of 00:17:54.56\00:17:57.57 getting your fax, pretty soon you're sitting 00:17:57.58\00:17:59.95 there and you're drumming you know, 00:17:59.96\00:18:01.35 I thought to myself jut drumming my fingers. 00:18:01.36\00:18:03.39 Yeah. On the counter waiting for something 00:18:03.40\00:18:06.31 because we want it now and we're getting to 00:18:06.32\00:18:09.20 aware we expect such immediate results 00:18:09.21\00:18:12.86 that we're stressed when we don't have them. 00:18:12.87\00:18:15.13 Yeah, well you know in me as far as my personal 00:18:15.14\00:18:18.06 life goes the one that, that I thought its 00:18:18.07\00:18:20.60 help me more than I thought it would be, 00:18:20.61\00:18:22.11 it would be just the process of getting away. 00:18:22.12\00:18:24.36 Yeah. You know, moving from your environment 00:18:24.37\00:18:26.86 that you're in everyday, day in and day out 00:18:26.87\00:18:29.52 and getting away whether that be you know, 00:18:29.96\00:18:31.74 just sitting alone somewhere taking a 00:18:31.75\00:18:34.37 trip of vacation. In fact, one of the ways 00:18:34.38\00:18:36.79 I treat chronic stress. You know, in addition 00:18:37.35\00:18:40.37 to the biblical ways and in addition to resting 00:18:40.38\00:18:42.62 is I tell somebody I say, Shelley you're really 00:18:42.63\00:18:45.57 stressed. And if we don't do something now 00:18:45.58\00:18:47.47 it's gonna get worst. Well, why I'm suggesting? 00:18:47.48\00:18:49.18 Is Wednesday afternoon that you take off from, 00:18:49.19\00:18:52.98 from 1 O'clock to 5 O'clock that your time, 00:18:52.99\00:18:55.83 you can do whatever you want; 00:18:57.49\00:18:58.46 no one can get to you. Now, if you chose to 00:18:58.47\00:18:59.52 work it's your choice, if you wanna lay down, 00:18:59.53\00:19:02.07 it's your choice, if you wanna read a book, 00:19:02.08\00:19:04.32 if you wanna write those are all of your choices. 00:19:04.33\00:19:06.33 And what I think this does is let your subconscious 00:19:06.71\00:19:09.69 know that no matter how hard it gets 00:19:09.70\00:19:12.00 during the week, I may have a release valve. 00:19:12.01\00:19:14.30 I have something to look forward to and I can 00:19:14.67\00:19:16.69 sort of rejuvenate my brain batteries in order 00:19:16.70\00:19:19.89 to make it to the next time which probably 00:19:19.90\00:19:22.07 is gonna be a Sabbath, when I can sort of 00:19:22.08\00:19:23.63 rejuvenate myself again. I think that getting 00:19:23.64\00:19:26.73 away mentally and knowing that that vacation is 00:19:26.74\00:19:29.45 there has helped me more than 00:19:29.46\00:19:31.23 anything in dealing with chronic stress. 00:19:31.24\00:19:32.89 You know, I was thinking there was a 00:19:33.29\00:19:35.12 young lady that I was ministering to that 00:19:35.13\00:19:37.73 she was a young mother of three, Homeschooling 00:19:38.16\00:19:40.84 all three children. 'Cause she was with 00:19:40.85\00:19:42.86 her children 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 00:19:42.87\00:19:46.19 And I gave her the advice that you gave her, 00:19:46.57\00:19:48.99 and she said, oh! But I feel like I would be a 00:19:49.00\00:19:51.05 horrible mother if I took an afternoon off 00:19:51.06\00:19:53.31 for myself. And I told her I said, 00:19:53.32\00:19:55.23 the worse mothers are those who do not spend 00:19:55.24\00:19:57.76 enough time with their children, or those who 00:19:57.77\00:19:59.73 spent too much time with your children because 00:19:59.74\00:20:01.85 you do need that break. Right. I know she loved 00:20:01.86\00:20:04.44 her, her babies, but it's something that to 00:20:04.45\00:20:08.00 constantly have that much demand on you personally 00:20:08.01\00:20:12.00 where you never have a second for 00:20:12.01\00:20:13.51 yourself that really causes a lot of stress. 00:20:13.52\00:20:16.57 That, that's a good point, I think the mothers 00:20:16.58\00:20:18.75 at home they deserve to have this. 00:20:18.76\00:20:21.10 Another point I wanted to touch on here 00:20:21.49\00:20:23.62 is nutrition. Nutrition is a treatment for 00:20:23.63\00:20:26.69 chronic stress and if you think about go, 00:20:26.70\00:20:29.03 go look at home tonight at some of the packages 00:20:29.04\00:20:31.72 you have and look at all the chemicals that are 00:20:31.73\00:20:33.54 in the packages, all the preservatives, all the 00:20:33.55\00:20:35.78 things that you put in there that you can't even 00:20:35.79\00:20:37.53 say tonight Glutaraldehyde or ethylene you know, 00:20:37.54\00:20:41.01 I saw ethylene glycol the other day, on a big 00:20:41.02\00:20:45.39 Frank can, but all these chemicals God did not 00:20:45.40\00:20:48.52 make to put in our body. You know these are not 00:20:48.53\00:20:51.44 you know they weren't in the Garden of Eden 00:20:51.45\00:20:52.97 giving us these chemicals to take. 00:20:52.98\00:20:54.56 We don't know how they affect our chemical 00:20:54.57\00:20:56.77 nature in the body. And everyone that I 00:20:56.78\00:20:58.92 told to try to get off process and extra foods 00:20:58.93\00:21:02.81 with these preservative and they have felt 00:21:02.82\00:21:04.77 better because they're eating more natural diets, 00:21:04.78\00:21:07.76 our body is able to handle these chemicals 00:21:07.77\00:21:10.20 it doesn't it helps the whole chemical balance. 00:21:10.61\00:21:13.56 And I doesn't want, one thing I want, another 00:21:13.57\00:21:15.29 thing I want to push people through is 00:21:15.30\00:21:17.04 getting adequate nutrition, especially water. 00:21:17.05\00:21:19.20 You know what you just said it just occur to me, 00:21:19.58\00:21:21.94 there are some things that we do eat that 00:21:21.95\00:21:24.21 stress our body, and if it stresses 00:21:24.22\00:21:26.72 our body it's gonna stress your mind. 00:21:26.73\00:21:28.29 You know what used to stress me is 00:21:28.68\00:21:30.43 I probably shouldn't tell on myself, but I used to 00:21:30.44\00:21:32.68 love to eat Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. 00:21:32.69\00:21:34.90 And that stress me out and they were so 00:21:35.59\00:21:37.75 delicious and it was like, I could not eat just 00:21:37.76\00:21:40.29 one of them and that was what stressed me. 00:21:40.30\00:21:42.11 I would eat one and it would taste so good 00:21:42.12\00:21:43.91 I want to eat another one, and want to eat 00:21:44.32\00:21:46.14 another one. So, I was just better off 00:21:46.15\00:21:47.38 replacing that habit with a good habit and this is 00:21:47.39\00:21:50.97 stress from just not even one that just 00:21:50.98\00:21:52.97 drove me crazy. So, I'm just, 00:21:52.98\00:21:54.15 I just have to stay way from Krispy Kremes. 00:21:54.16\00:21:55.81 Alright, and you watched children in a 00:21:55.82\00:21:57.30 birthday party and some of they, if they eat, 00:21:57.31\00:21:59.14 have eaten too many sweets and you see the 00:21:59.15\00:22:00.88 stress factors on their body. Yeah. You know, 00:22:00.89\00:22:03.17 sugars in it. You know, one thing I didn't notice 00:22:03.18\00:22:06.54 on your list is coping with stress. 00:22:06.55\00:22:08.59 Now, for me music can either cause stress or 00:22:08.99\00:22:12.87 it can alleviate my stress. Yeah. I'm very, 00:22:12.88\00:22:15.98 I'm noise sensitive. So noise, if I have too 00:22:15.99\00:22:19.62 many conflicting noises around me it makes 00:22:19.63\00:22:23.96 me that's the time when I feel the most stressed. 00:22:23.97\00:22:26.74 And so, either I want it to be totally quiet or 00:22:27.51\00:22:30.96 I want something soft, something simple not 00:22:30.97\00:22:34.89 complicated in the line of music. 00:22:34.90\00:22:36.80 So, music can if it's too jive, or too much beat 00:22:36.81\00:22:42.34 it can make me feel stressed, but if it's 00:22:42.35\00:22:44.43 something slow and nice acoustical guitar 00:22:44.44\00:22:47.17 or piano solo or something that 00:22:47.18\00:22:49.24 can make me feel real calm. You know there 00:22:49.25\00:22:50.83 couple other, you know the list goes on 00:22:50.84\00:22:52.48 and I think each individual has to you know 00:22:52.49\00:22:54.46 sort of decide what treats themselves, 00:22:54.47\00:22:56.27 but I had a lot of people tell me that heat 00:22:56.28\00:22:59.16 that helps them, helps their, their treatments 00:23:00.09\00:23:02.45 of stress. Whether that be heat from 00:23:02.46\00:23:04.20 you know a water pool, some people like 00:23:04.21\00:23:06.74 massage you know as a way of relaxing 00:23:06.75\00:23:09.37 the muscles, but that's another way that some 00:23:09.38\00:23:12.16 people are dealing with some other stress 00:23:12.17\00:23:13.77 you know, your muscles are tight all the time, 00:23:13.78\00:23:15.61 if you can just sort of relax them all the time 00:23:15.62\00:23:17.43 that sort of that feeling that you get, 00:23:17.44\00:23:19.89 there's lots of you know, good positive ways, 00:23:19.90\00:23:22.00 but most people aren't thinking about ways 00:23:22.41\00:23:24.40 to actively treat stress on a 00:23:24.41\00:23:26.27 daily basis, they just let it happen. 00:23:26.28\00:23:28.14 You know this the song "Sweet Hour of Prayer," 00:23:28.93\00:23:33.56 "Sweet Hour of Prayer." Oh! What needless 00:23:34.00\00:23:36.62 toils we bare because we don't take him to 00:23:36.63\00:23:39.66 the Lord and prayer. That for me prayer 00:23:39.67\00:23:42.81 is one of the greatest distressors because 00:23:43.33\00:23:46.50 when I can go to God and just pray earnestly 00:23:46.51\00:23:50.38 and, and really focus my eyes on the problem 00:23:50.39\00:23:53.51 solver rather than on the problem, 00:23:53.52\00:23:54.80 exactly, it really changes. Well, and that's, 00:23:54.81\00:23:57.06 that's the biggest solution to stress, and 00:23:57.07\00:23:59.48 that's why I don't see how people that don't have 00:23:59.49\00:24:01.75 a relationship with Christ can deal with stress. 00:24:01.76\00:24:03.89 In the way Christ dealt with stressed, 00:24:04.92\00:24:06.31 every time he had a stressful situation, 00:24:06.32\00:24:08.80 what did He do? He went to His Father. 00:24:09.15\00:24:11.23 He went to His Father. So, that's the true answer 00:24:11.24\00:24:12.82 to that. Amen, okay well I'm glad Marlene that you 00:24:12.83\00:24:16.80 wrote this question in. This one comes to us 00:24:16.81\00:24:19.82 from J.R. in Oklahoma and he writes, I recently 00:24:19.83\00:24:23.69 got divorced and lost my job in a matter of 00:24:23.70\00:24:26.47 three months. Bless your heart J.R., 00:24:26.48\00:24:28.56 I saw my doctor and he put me on a nerve pill. 00:24:28.99\00:24:33.80 I must admit I feel "chilled." How do you 00:24:34.23\00:24:39.31 feel about nerve pills? Whoa! Now, would you 00:24:39.32\00:24:43.91 say nerve pills he's probably talking 00:24:43.92\00:24:45.50 about a tranquilizer? Yeah, he was probably 00:24:45.51\00:24:46.80 talking about Xanax, or Valium, or Ativan or 00:24:46.81\00:24:50.59 those many ones that are out there. 00:24:50.60\00:24:52.40 I think the true treatment of any disease 00:24:53.31\00:24:55.96 is getting at the core of it. Okay and what they 00:24:55.97\00:24:58.78 have not done is got at the core. And people 00:24:58.79\00:25:01.96 they just give a pill right away, now some people 00:25:01.97\00:25:04.48 truly do have chemical imbalances, okay true. 00:25:04.49\00:25:08.23 Some people really do need it, and some people 00:25:08.24\00:25:10.18 have anxiety disorders and stress disorders, 00:25:10.19\00:25:12.97 but I would say that's probably the minority. 00:25:13.33\00:25:16.36 The majority of people that I think deal with 00:25:17.35\00:25:20.08 chronic stress has a type of stress that it needs 00:25:20.09\00:25:22.56 to be treated in the, in the way we just 00:25:22.57\00:25:24.43 talked about. Find good coping 00:25:24.44\00:25:26.46 mechanisms distress. And I like to refer people 00:25:26.47\00:25:29.02 back I said, listen let's not jump to a medication, 00:25:29.03\00:25:32.13 okay let's take step back, find out what's 00:25:32.50\00:25:35.99 causing your stress? For instance, if it's 00:25:36.00\00:25:37.64 stressful to drive to work a certain way, 00:25:37.65\00:25:39.89 well maybe you should change the way you go 00:25:40.31\00:25:41.94 to work, if it's, if someone, a colleague at 00:25:41.95\00:25:44.95 work is just irritating you all the time. 00:25:44.96\00:25:46.87 Well, maybe you should move round that 00:25:47.33\00:25:49.13 colleague, if you are prayer life and your 00:25:49.14\00:25:51.69 religeous life it's not what it should be. 00:25:51.70\00:25:53.56 Well, maybe you should resolve some of those 00:25:53.57\00:25:55.21 conflicts. Right. If you know, you do all those 00:25:55.22\00:25:57.78 other things you can first and then after 00:25:57.79\00:26:00.17 every other thing is exalted, exhausted then 00:26:00.18\00:26:02.74 I would say, well do I really have a chemical 00:26:02.75\00:26:05.16 imbalance or have I change my chemicals enough. 00:26:05.17\00:26:07.64 And I wanna mention this study, they did a 00:26:07.65\00:26:09.88 study recently and they compared people 00:26:09.89\00:26:12.43 that who are under chronic stress and 00:26:12.44\00:26:14.09 specifically depression. And they compared them 00:26:14.10\00:26:17.10 to those that took medication, okay and 00:26:17.11\00:26:19.86 took medication for one year and they're also 00:26:19.87\00:26:22.03 compared those that did lifestyle changes and at 00:26:22.04\00:26:24.55 one year they grated the amount of depression 00:26:24.56\00:26:27.08 and stress they had. And the people that had 00:26:27.09\00:26:29.28 lifestyle changes were just as happy with their 00:26:29.29\00:26:32.95 overall level of satisfaction and they 00:26:32.96\00:26:34.71 dealt with the cause and the people that 00:26:34.72\00:26:36.15 took medications. And there certainly are 00:26:36.16\00:26:39.37 cases that there are some people, yes, 00:26:39.38\00:26:43.12 who have depression, who if such a chemical, 00:26:43.13\00:26:46.02 strong chemical imbalance that they 00:26:46.03\00:26:47.70 have to take that medication and we don't 00:26:47.71\00:26:49.47 want to give you the idea if you're one of those 00:26:49.48\00:26:53.29 people that there's anything wrong with that 00:26:53.30\00:26:55.07 as long as you're trying the lifestyle 00:26:55.08\00:26:56.91 things as well. This is in addition. 00:26:56.92\00:26:58.73 This is in addition, right so. Well, we have 00:26:58.74\00:27:02.47 got so many stress factors that are contributing 00:27:02.48\00:27:07.25 to our society and it's not just the United States, 00:27:07.26\00:27:11.30 Japan, Africa, India around the world. 00:27:11.31\00:27:15.98 You know, we look at ourselves and think we're 00:27:15.99\00:27:20.30 the ones with the problems, but some of 00:27:20.31\00:27:22.34 our problems are not those basic life 00:27:22.35\00:27:24.56 threatening issues. I think about the Middle East, 00:27:24.57\00:27:26.99 can you imagine having the stress of just 00:27:27.00\00:27:29.22 going to work and? A mother, I just think about 00:27:29.23\00:27:31.03 a mother with the children, yeah, 00:27:31.04\00:27:32.31 was that's going on over there. 00:27:32.71\00:27:34.32 But, but it's truly a worldwide problem and 00:27:34.33\00:27:36.84 it's, it's something that we need to be aware of. 00:27:36.85\00:27:39.46 And the things that I want the audience 00:27:39.47\00:27:42.12 worldwide to look at today and these are things 00:27:42.13\00:27:44.78 that I want to just leave, just two points that I 00:27:44.79\00:27:47.26 want you to take home is number one recognize 00:27:47.27\00:27:50.79 stress, if you don't get anything out recognize it, 00:27:50.80\00:27:53.44 if you're under stress. And two, develop a 00:27:53.45\00:27:56.03 game plan to deal with your stress and get 00:27:56.04\00:27:58.42 some help. Amen, well I hope you've enjoyed 00:27:58.43\00:28:02.45 our program today with Dr. Jim Marcum and if you 00:28:02.46\00:28:05.13 have stress in your life and hit your knees 00:28:05.14\00:28:07.91 and pray, turn all of your burdens 00:28:07.92\00:28:10.21 over to the Lord. Amen, thank you. 00:28:10.22\00:28:12.17
