And cardiology is as 00:01:48.83\00:01:51.87 we deal with the diseases of the heart and of the 00:01:51.88\00:01:55.10 blood vessels. And we help not only to 00:01:55.11\00:01:57.19 treat disease, but hopefully we can 00:01:57.20\00:01:59.71 prevent these terrible diseases 00:01:59.72\00:02:01.43 from, from happening. 00:02:01.44\00:02:02.41 And we learned in our last program, 00:02:02.79\00:02:04.51 how incredibly high the percentages are for us 00:02:04.52\00:02:08.40 to have a heart attack, particularly in 00:02:08.41\00:02:10.13 United States? Would you like to give 00:02:10.14\00:02:11.51 us a few of those views? 00:02:11.52\00:02:12.65 Yeah, in the United States and all over the, 00:02:12.66\00:02:14.86 in fact I want to go back all over the world 00:02:14.87\00:02:17.01 now we're seeing increase prevalences of 00:02:17.02\00:02:19.46 heart disease. And a lot of it has to do, 00:02:19.47\00:02:21.48 as countries developed a Westernized Diet. 00:02:21.49\00:02:25.11 Especially as we get into plant-based foods and, 00:02:25.12\00:02:28.08 and things of that nature all of these fast foods 00:02:28.09\00:02:30.57 that we go to, all of these package 00:02:30.58\00:02:32.34 foods, it's not healthy for 00:02:32.35\00:02:34.07 our cardiovascular systems. 00:02:34.08\00:02:35.62 Okay, now you confused me there, 00:02:35.63\00:02:37.03 'cause you said as, as we get into plant-based 00:02:37.04\00:02:39.24 foods. Oh! Plant-based foods is what we want 00:02:39.25\00:02:41.29 to get into, I'm sorry, 00:02:41.30\00:02:42.54 I don't want to confuse anyone. 00:02:42.55\00:02:43.77 We want to get into plant-based foods and get 00:02:43.78\00:02:45.76 away from some of these animal-based foods that 00:02:45.77\00:02:48.19 we're getting into. Amen. But as we see other, 00:02:48.20\00:02:50.55 for instance years ago the people in China and 00:02:50.56\00:02:53.19 people in China probably watching this 00:02:53.20\00:02:54.81 show today. Years ago they did, 00:02:54.82\00:02:56.60 they had almost zero cardiovascular disease, 00:02:56.61\00:02:59.30 but as they become westernized, 00:02:59.31\00:03:01.77 we're seeing their prevalence go up 00:03:01.78\00:03:02.94 dramatically. And also as those people move 00:03:02.95\00:03:05.46 to United States, they're all of a sudden 00:03:05.47\00:03:08.01 developing disease that their ancestors 00:03:08.02\00:03:10.00 didn't have, so we know it's clearly 00:03:10.01\00:03:11.61 not a genetic disease, this is a disease that 00:03:11.62\00:03:14.19 we're acquiring. An alarming statistics is 00:03:14.20\00:03:17.08 right now, cardiovascular disease 00:03:17.09\00:03:19.21 it counts for about 42% to 43% of all 00:03:19.22\00:03:21.65 deaths in the United States. 00:03:21.66\00:03:23.59 That's amazing, that's amazing 00:03:23.60\00:03:25.36 Now, you have a ministry called Heartwise 00:03:25.37\00:03:28.12 Yeah. And you received questions that come in 00:03:28.13\00:03:30.94 from all over the world as you're trying minister 00:03:30.95\00:03:34.80 to people and he tries to teach them, 00:03:34.81\00:03:36.43 how to be wise about your heart. 00:03:36.44\00:03:39.13 And today we're gonna be talking about how to 00:03:39.14\00:03:41.67 treat a heart attack? So, our first question 00:03:41.68\00:03:44.75 comes from Vijay in India and I hope I'm 00:03:44.76\00:03:47.43 pronouncing that correctly. He says, 00:03:47.44\00:03:49.16 my home is in India and located some distance 00:03:49.17\00:03:52.29 from medical help. What should I do, 00:03:52.30\00:03:54.62 if I think I'm having a heart attack? 00:03:54.63\00:03:57.20 Well Vijay, a lot of that depends on your 00:03:58.20\00:04:00.74 situations and I've never myself been to India, 00:04:00.75\00:04:03.69 but the first thing you want to do is 00:04:04.36\00:04:06.18 to get help, okay. But before you even 00:04:06.19\00:04:09.37 get help and I don't mean get help, medical help, 00:04:09.38\00:04:12.27 but I mean get help spiritual help. Amen. 00:04:12.28\00:04:15.05 The first thing that I would do is pray, say God, 00:04:15.06\00:04:17.47 help me out of this tough situation. 00:04:17.48\00:04:19.58 I'm having a heart problem or something new 00:04:19.59\00:04:22.48 is going on, I need your help 'cause 00:04:22.49\00:04:24.03 we know that God heals, and we know that God 00:04:24.04\00:04:25.83 can take away these problems. 00:04:25.84\00:04:27.60 The second thing I would activate some type of 00:04:27.61\00:04:30.57 help system. In United States we 00:04:30.58\00:04:33.07 have a 911 system. In Britain and Australia's 00:04:33.08\00:04:36.44 they have other types of alarming systems. 00:04:36.45\00:04:38.25 I'm assuming in India that you have some way 00:04:38.26\00:04:40.08 to get help. And this might be help that you 00:04:40.09\00:04:43.49 might call a phone number, you might have someone 00:04:43.50\00:04:45.28 run to get help for you, but you don't need to be 00:04:45.29\00:04:47.70 moving anywhere, you need to have someone 00:04:47.71\00:04:49.70 else get help and bring it back from you. 00:04:49.71\00:04:52.43 Another thing that might help in this situation 00:04:53.18\00:04:55.52 is if you have an aspirin nearby and you think 00:04:55.53\00:04:58.38 you're having a heart attack, 00:04:58.39\00:04:59.81 chewing an aspirin might help a 00:05:00.67\00:05:02.25 little bit in this acute situation. 00:05:02.26\00:05:04.20 Okay, that's good. But if you think you're having 00:05:04.21\00:05:07.76 a heart attack you shouldn't get in the car 00:05:07.77\00:05:09.41 and drive yourself to the doctor. No, 00:05:09.42\00:05:10.51 and I think that's the one thing I wanna 00:05:10.52\00:05:12.37 emphasize you shouldn't take care of yourself. 00:05:12.38\00:05:14.48 Now, one other things that I won't, 00:05:14.97\00:05:17.00 this is a good time to bring it up. 00:05:17.01\00:05:18.46 A lot of people in heart attacks what kills a 00:05:19.89\00:05:22.86 person is not so much the heart attack and the 00:05:22.87\00:05:25.22 damage it's done from the heart attack itself. 00:05:25.23\00:05:27.32 What that kills the person is a electrical 00:05:27.82\00:05:30.37 disturbances, the arrhythmia is 00:05:30.38\00:05:32.63 what we call it. Okay, the heart malfunction, 00:05:32.64\00:05:34.88 it doesn't pump good, it doesn't get blood 00:05:34.89\00:05:36.65 to the head. Nowadays we have 00:05:36.66\00:05:39.06 devices called the defibrillator, 00:05:39.07\00:05:40.78 have you ever heard of the defibrillator? 00:05:40.79\00:05:41.97 As a matter of fact I have, and now they have 00:05:41.98\00:05:43.97 these external the defibrillator devices 00:05:43.98\00:05:45.78 that you can buy, and that are portable 00:05:45.79\00:05:47.68 for your home or to take in your motor 00:05:47.69\00:05:50.33 home or anything like that. 00:05:50.34\00:05:51.57 That's right, and the reason I bring it up 00:05:51.58\00:05:52.91 Vijay is people that are high risk of having 00:05:52.92\00:05:55.25 heart attacks, it might be of interest to 00:05:55.26\00:05:58.18 you or your family to get maybe someone 00:05:58.19\00:05:59.98 interested in these devices, bring it into 00:05:59.99\00:06:01.93 your community somewhere, so if there is someone 00:06:01.94\00:06:04.43 that collapses suddenly and it is from the 00:06:04.44\00:06:06.42 heart attack, these devices you know in the 00:06:06.43\00:06:08.61 treatment of these arrhythmias, all you have 00:06:08.62\00:06:10.71 to do is put on two stickers, okay hit an 00:06:10.72\00:06:14.14 on button, of course they're already made sure 00:06:14.15\00:06:16.10 the battery charges and, and the device will 00:06:16.11\00:06:18.28 bring a person out of this dangerous and 00:06:18.29\00:06:21.02 life threatening heart rhythm. 00:06:21.03\00:06:22.77 That's an excellent idea, so would you recommend 00:06:22.78\00:06:25.88 that like for businesses that have a number of 00:06:25.89\00:06:28.66 employees, particularly if you're a distance from 00:06:28.67\00:06:31.08 medical help, if it's gonna take five minutes 00:06:31.09\00:06:34.14 or ten minutes for an ambulance to arrive. 00:06:34.15\00:06:36.16 Would you recommend that people 00:06:36.17\00:06:37.68 get something like that? 00:06:37.69\00:06:39.03 Yes, most certainly and this, this saves lives 00:06:39.04\00:06:41.90 more than anything else, this saves life during 00:06:41.91\00:06:43.80 the acute event. Right. During acute event 00:06:43.81\00:06:46.47 you know prevention is not gonna matter at that 00:06:46.48\00:06:49.01 point you want to have an, an emergency treatment 00:06:49.02\00:06:51.97 and this can save a lots of lives. In fact, 00:06:51.98\00:06:54.18 we even have these devices that we implant 00:06:54.19\00:06:56.62 in people. Right. Did you know that the 00:06:56.63\00:06:58.46 Vice-president Cheney has a defibrillator and it 00:06:58.47\00:07:01.55 reads his heart rhythm every second of everyday 00:07:01.56\00:07:03.89 and if it ever sees one it doesn't like it takes 00:07:03.90\00:07:06.39 care of it. Well, this works on the same 00:07:06.40\00:07:08.37 principles, like having an ambulance with you, 00:07:08.38\00:07:11.46 an emergency room with you all the time. 00:07:11.47\00:07:13.79 So, in large Churches now they're getting him 00:07:13.80\00:07:16.07 at the airport, they're getting them, 00:07:16.08\00:07:17.66 schools are starting to get these defibrillators. 00:07:17.67\00:07:20.31 And I thinks it's definitely something that every, 00:07:20.32\00:07:22.47 everyone should look into. 00:07:22.48\00:07:24.29 You know, and at the cost for these devices today 00:07:24.30\00:07:27.33 their range anywhere from 1800 to maybe 3000, 00:07:27.34\00:07:31.02 that's a rough range, but if you are at really 00:07:31.03\00:07:33.66 high risk it wouldn't be a bad idea to have one 00:07:33.67\00:07:35.79 in your home, if you live out 00:07:35.80\00:07:37.04 in the country particularly. 00:07:37.05\00:07:38.29 Now, I agree and more and, and also importantly 00:07:38.30\00:07:40.57 not only do you have-to have one, but the people 00:07:40.58\00:07:42.54 when something does happen, you 00:07:42.55\00:07:44.35 have-to-have people that are willing to step 00:07:44.36\00:07:45.90 up and say, listen I'm not gonna be scared, 00:07:45.91\00:07:48.10 I'm not gonna run myself, I'm gonna put this life 00:07:48.11\00:07:50.57 saving device on. Right. And, and go 00:07:50.58\00:07:52.76 ahead and initiate therapy. 00:07:52.77\00:07:54.69 Amen, amen, okay this is a question from 00:07:54.70\00:07:57.15 Philip in Florida, and Philip writes my bypass 00:07:57.16\00:08:00.39 was performed two years ago, am I safe 00:08:00.40\00:08:03.81 from having another heart attack? 00:08:03.82\00:08:05.86 Well, Philip thanks for that question and couple 00:08:06.52\00:08:09.98 of things I want to say is, is first of all I 00:08:09.99\00:08:12.02 wanna explain what bypass is to everybody. 00:08:12.03\00:08:14.52 A lot of people don't understand what bypass is, 00:08:14.53\00:08:16.55 but when the arteries get clogged up with 00:08:16.56\00:08:19.12 cholesterol, they get so clogged up there, 00:08:19.13\00:08:21.92 the person's having symptom. What a bypass 00:08:21.93\00:08:24.47 does is bypass around this, it takes another 00:08:24.48\00:08:27.58 either artery or vein and it bring it you know, 00:08:27.59\00:08:30.74 they usually hook it to the aorta, that's a large 00:08:30.75\00:08:32.84 vessel that leaves the heart and they bring blood 00:08:32.85\00:08:35.22 south of the blockage. So, there's less symptoms. 00:08:35.23\00:08:38.26 It's kind of like they're grafting it in, 00:08:38.27\00:08:39.48 and then, yes, in two different spots and they 00:08:39.49\00:08:41.74 just go away. And sometimes they call it a 00:08:41.75\00:08:43.18 bypass graft, but remember in bypass surgery the 00:08:43.19\00:08:47.30 blockages that you came with are still there, 00:08:47.31\00:08:50.33 they're not gone they just bypassed around them. 00:08:50.34\00:08:53.95 So, what happens if that plaque its bypass, 00:08:54.57\00:08:56.61 that clogging, what happens if that breaks up. 00:08:56.62\00:08:58.97 Well, you could have, if it breaks up or get worse, 00:08:58.98\00:09:01.35 you can still have a heart attack, but usually 00:09:01.36\00:09:04.01 heart attacks and bypass patients don't 00:09:04.02\00:09:06.12 seem to be as large because they have all this 00:09:06.13\00:09:08.40 extra blood supply, but getting back to Philip's 00:09:08.41\00:09:10.81 questions the chance of having a heart attack 00:09:10.82\00:09:13.12 is the same whether you've been bypassed or not. 00:09:13.13\00:09:15.37 A lot of people say, oh! I've been bypassed, 00:09:15.81\00:09:17.27 I cannot have a heart attack, that's not true. 00:09:17.28\00:09:19.72 And one of the most important things is, 00:09:20.20\00:09:23.02 as I try to strive to get people to realize it, 00:09:23.03\00:09:25.25 after you've had a bypass then your treatments 00:09:25.26\00:09:28.08 just beginning, 'cause we still haven't got at the 00:09:28.09\00:09:29.74 core of the problem, we brought some time 00:09:29.98\00:09:33.01 that we do have to get to the core of the problem. 00:09:33.02\00:09:34.86 So, Philip the answer to your question, 00:09:34.87\00:09:36.96 am I safe from having a heart attack? 00:09:36.97\00:09:38.49 No, you're not, you still have to do everything 00:09:38.50\00:09:40.31 else that every one else does to lower their risks. 00:09:40.32\00:09:42.31 Philip, I hope you're paying close attention. 00:09:43.75\00:09:46.43 Okay, here's a question from Stella in Louisiana 00:09:46.90\00:09:49.83 and Stella writes, in 2003, I had a small heart attack. 00:09:49.84\00:09:54.47 My doctor has put me on five medications 00:09:54.48\00:09:57.85 they slow me down, will I have to be on the 00:09:58.04\00:10:00.87 medication for the rest of my life I'm only 51. 00:10:00.88\00:10:03.91 Yeah, well Stella some of these medicines 00:10:04.77\00:10:08.08 depending on your situation you might have 00:10:08.51\00:10:10.19 to be on for the rest of your life. 00:10:10.20\00:10:11.90 After a heart attack we have some major problems 00:10:13.53\00:10:15.99 that happen in the healing phase after the 00:10:16.00\00:10:18.24 first year of a heart attack. 00:10:18.25\00:10:19.61 Okay, let's bring up the possibilities here. 00:10:19.62\00:10:23.91 The complications after we have a, a heart attack. 00:10:23.92\00:10:26.68 One is that abnormal heart rhythm; we've talked about 00:10:26.69\00:10:29.78 that all the way. The two is the heart failure; 00:10:29.79\00:10:32.03 it's so weak that fluid backs up, 00:10:32.04\00:10:34.04 people can't breathe. Sometimes valves are 00:10:34.05\00:10:36.66 damaged during heart attacks. And the last time 00:10:36.67\00:10:38.99 you had structural, other structural 00:10:39.00\00:10:40.97 abnormalities in the heart. Sometimes there's 00:10:40.98\00:10:42.72 an acute complication during the heart attack 00:10:42.99\00:10:45.55 that happens right away. So, Stella a lot of the 00:10:45.56\00:10:49.11 medicines in the first year have to be continued 00:10:49.12\00:10:52.09 like frequently we use the medicine called 00:10:52.10\00:10:53.85 Beta blockers, I don't know if you've heard of 00:10:53.86\00:10:55.55 that, but that helps prevent the funny heart 00:10:55.56\00:10:58.12 rhythms, that happens as the heart heals. 00:10:58.13\00:10:59.96 Sometimes when the heart's been weakened 00:11:00.73\00:11:02.50 the rest of the body makes hormones that 00:11:02.51\00:11:04.60 that damage the heart. Frequently during another 00:11:04.61\00:11:06.70 class of medicine called an ACE inhibitor that 00:11:06.71\00:11:09.22 helps the heart remodels and reshapes itself. 00:11:09.23\00:11:12.35 Always people after heart attack have to take 00:11:13.98\00:11:16.04 an aspirin the rest of their life to prevent 00:11:16.05\00:11:18.75 further blood clots it might develop. 00:11:18.76\00:11:20.88 Another thing they have to do is take a 00:11:20.89\00:11:22.78 cholesterol medicine and then they have to get into 00:11:22.79\00:11:25.17 all the lifestyle changes that, 00:11:25.18\00:11:26.94 that we have to do as well. 00:11:26.95\00:11:28.43 So, as far as you, the specific question. 00:11:28.76\00:11:30.71 Some of the medication after the first year 00:11:30.72\00:11:32.93 goes by, depending on your overall cardiovascular 00:11:32.94\00:11:35.74 status, the strength of your heart, whether you 00:11:35.75\00:11:37.45 had have any heart rhythms, some of those 00:11:37.46\00:11:39.24 might be able to be turned down, but a lot of, 00:11:39.25\00:11:42.04 when I turn down a medicine, a person has to 00:11:42.05\00:11:44.25 say, I'm gonna do some changes to make 00:11:44.26\00:11:46.10 myself better. They have to make some changes 00:11:46.11\00:11:49.10 before I feel comfortable about turning 00:11:49.11\00:11:50.89 some of these medications off. 00:11:50.90\00:11:52.23 Okay, now I heard and see if this is correct. 00:11:52.59\00:11:56.02 Okay. But I was told that if you were taking an 00:11:56.03\00:11:59.50 aspirin to prevent heart attack and yet you're 00:11:59.51\00:12:03.32 taking ibuprofen as well, that it zeros out the 00:12:03.33\00:12:06.45 affect of the aspirin and you may as well not be 00:12:06.46\00:12:08.60 taking it, is that correct? Yeah, there's, 00:12:08.61\00:12:10.11 there's truth to that. And what we try to tell 00:12:10.12\00:12:12.07 people on ibuprofen or they can take it not to 00:12:12.08\00:12:15.00 take it, but another thing sometimes we advice 00:12:15.01\00:12:17.25 people is to take it at different times. 00:12:17.26\00:12:19.16 You know, okay. You know, so, you don't 00:12:19.46\00:12:21.17 follow it up right afterward, 00:12:21.18\00:12:22.47 sometimes we've been have them take more of it. 00:12:22.48\00:12:24.56 And, and aspirins of 81 for prevention of 00:12:24.57\00:12:26.89 full-strength aspirin at a different time. 00:12:26.90\00:12:28.76 So, does it matter what time you take this aspirin? 00:12:29.07\00:12:32.23 I mean does it matter if we take it 00:12:32.24\00:12:33.58 at morning or night or. 00:12:33.59\00:12:34.97 No, in prevention you can just take it. 00:12:35.38\00:12:37.07 Now, that's if, that's as long as you're 00:12:37.08\00:12:38.83 not taking the medicine that would in the 00:12:38.84\00:12:40.25 field with it like you know, ibuprofen. 00:12:40.26\00:12:42.33 Okay, sounds good, lets see again. 00:12:42.34\00:12:44.86 We have here and oh! First let me go back 00:12:45.25\00:12:48.17 to Stella's question. Okay. When, she says, 00:12:48.18\00:12:51.01 I had a small heart attack. Do we rank 00:12:51.02\00:12:54.62 heart attacks like this one was small, 00:12:54.63\00:12:57.20 this one was medium and this one was large? 00:12:57.21\00:12:59.13 Yeah, we do and some, some people can have a 00:12:59.94\00:13:02.56 heart attack and they don't you know, 00:13:02.57\00:13:05.41 even though they have it, okay, for symptoms 00:13:05.77\00:13:07.69 well we just find it incidentally, okay. 00:13:07.70\00:13:10.04 We can tell based on heart attacks about the damage 00:13:10.80\00:13:13.77 that's been done, if a lot of damage has been 00:13:13.78\00:13:15.84 done that means the heart didn't get the blood 00:13:15.85\00:13:17.71 and it's, it's died. A lot of the heart has died. 00:13:17.72\00:13:19.93 Now, that's a more serious problem then just 00:13:20.36\00:13:22.24 small amount of the heart that dies. 00:13:22.25\00:13:23.88 And how much heart attack you have 00:13:24.27\00:13:25.90 depends on whether it's a big blood vessel, 00:13:25.91\00:13:27.81 that malfunctions or is it a small one, 00:13:27.82\00:13:29.75 or if you've had one and had another one. 00:13:29.76\00:13:31.56 And so, all these things sort of add up to 00:13:31.98\00:13:34.33 how large the heart attack is, but it mainly 00:13:34.34\00:13:36.52 does with the strength, is your heart strong 00:13:36.53\00:13:38.63 afterwards or is it weak afterwards 00:13:38.64\00:13:40.14 that's how we gauge heart attacks? 00:13:40.15\00:13:41.77 Okay, alright, here's a question that comes to 00:13:41.78\00:13:46.38 us from John in Tennessee. And John writes, 00:13:46.39\00:13:50.30 I have just finished seeing a third cardiologist 00:13:50.31\00:13:53.81 and each one says that my blocked arteries 00:13:54.28\00:13:57.21 should be treated differently. 00:13:57.22\00:13:58.98 One said, bypass, another said stents, and a third 00:13:59.52\00:14:04.37 said they are too small, what should I do? 00:14:04.38\00:14:08.75 Yeah, and this is a very common dilemma that 00:14:09.71\00:14:12.34 we see, that people get conflicting device, advice. 00:14:12.35\00:14:16.04 One doctor will say, well we need to bypass, 00:14:16.48\00:14:19.07 which we've talked about bringing extra 00:14:19.08\00:14:20.59 blood to the heart. Another doctor will say, 00:14:20.60\00:14:23.18 well let's put a stent in. And what a stent is, 00:14:23.19\00:14:25.61 is a stainless steel device that actually 00:14:25.62\00:14:28.22 props up the artery, so it is held open. 00:14:28.77\00:14:31.14 And the problem that we've had with stents 00:14:32.14\00:14:34.06 in the past is something, to remember this stents 00:14:34.07\00:14:36.38 can actually damage the vessel wall. 00:14:36.39\00:14:38.22 And sometimes in the process of healing 00:14:38.74\00:14:40.86 we get more problems, that's why we just 00:14:41.21\00:14:43.10 don't put stents in everything that we see. 00:14:43.11\00:14:44.87 Also in order to put a stent in successfully 00:14:45.80\00:14:48.41 the blood vessel has to be a certain 00:14:48.42\00:14:49.96 amount of size, we can't put them in a very, 00:14:49.97\00:14:51.96 very small blood vessel. So, that's another thing 00:14:51.97\00:14:55.00 and then sometimes the arteries are too small 00:14:55.01\00:14:57.16 to do anything with and that's where some 00:14:57.17\00:15:00.20 doctors will say, well I can put a stent in that, 00:15:00.21\00:15:02.32 well I can do whatever, and some say, 00:15:02.33\00:15:03.84 well I can do a bypass. And that's where 00:15:03.85\00:15:05.84 the debate happens as far as all these things go, 00:15:05.85\00:15:09.04 but one other things I want to point you to, 00:15:09.98\00:15:11.82 and to answer your question correctly 00:15:11.83\00:15:14.07 John I really have to sort of seen your films 00:15:14.08\00:15:16.39 and know the overall situation. 00:15:16.40\00:15:17.85 One other things I want to mention, 00:15:18.30\00:15:20.73 is this term called regression? Okay, 00:15:20.74\00:15:24.11 regression is where a disease in the artery 00:15:24.50\00:15:26.58 it can become lessened overtime. 00:15:27.07\00:15:28.78 Can we show the next through up there? 00:15:29.31\00:15:31.85 These four gentleman's over the time, 00:15:32.45\00:15:34.73 Lester Morrison at the 00:15:34.74\00:15:36.12 Heidleberg Study in Germany. 00:15:36.13\00:15:37.46 Many of you've heard of Dean Ornish, 00:15:37.80\00:15:39.27 he's out in California, he has done a lot of these 00:15:39.69\00:15:41.58 regression studies and Dr. Esselstyn 00:15:41.59\00:15:44.28 at the Cleveland Clinic. What they've done is 00:15:44.29\00:15:47.67 done studies and by lifestyle modifications 00:15:47.68\00:15:50.67 they've shown that the blockages in the 00:15:51.04\00:15:52.67 arteries can be become less. 00:15:52.68\00:15:54.25 For instance, an artery that's 70 or 80% blocked, 00:15:54.26\00:15:57.21 if you go in these special treatment modes 00:15:57.22\00:15:59.99 there can be 70%, 60% in years on. 00:16:00.00\00:16:03.01 Now, why don't we hear about this? 00:16:03.02\00:16:04.58 So, this when you say regression it says 00:16:04.59\00:16:06.73 the reversal of the disease. 00:16:06.74\00:16:08.33 Exactly, reversion. Well, why don't we hear 00:16:08.34\00:16:10.70 about that? Well, I'm afraid now that our 00:16:10.71\00:16:13.26 society is set up to have cardiovascular disease. 00:16:13.27\00:16:16.32 Smokers, we have too many people that are smoking. 00:16:16.83\00:16:19.61 We have fast food you know, and how you know, 00:16:20.03\00:16:22.75 eventually good, good food on the fast food. 00:16:22.76\00:16:24.72 And through our, the history of our country 00:16:25.52\00:16:27.46 we moved to a meat based diet instead of a 00:16:27.47\00:16:30.39 plant-based diet. Right. And unfortunately 00:16:30.40\00:16:33.48 people are telling you that this is good, 00:16:33.49\00:16:35.17 you've heard all of these fat diets, haven't you? 00:16:35.18\00:16:37.09 Oh! Unbelievable. You know, and they say 00:16:37.82\00:16:39.17 you know, this is the high protein, you know, 00:16:39.49\00:16:41.38 high protein or high fat. Well, it's just the 00:16:41.39\00:16:43.93 opposite; we want low fat, low protein and 00:16:43.94\00:16:47.57 high complex carbohydrates. 00:16:47.58\00:16:49.20 So, getting back to this, as most of these studies 00:16:49.63\00:16:52.05 on the regression of coronary disease it starts 00:16:52.06\00:16:54.78 with a plant-based diet and also it says, 00:16:54.79\00:16:58.23 staying away from high sodium content. 00:16:58.24\00:17:00.41 And we know we see sodium all over in the 00:17:00.42\00:17:02.51 package foods, anything that's preserve not only 00:17:02.52\00:17:05.21 has sodium in it, but a lot of other things. 00:17:05.22\00:17:06.85 And the theory behind these regressions is, 00:17:07.21\00:17:09.17 when you start eating this way, exercising and do 00:17:09.18\00:17:12.41 some other things you're also usually taking the 00:17:12.42\00:17:14.83 cholesterol medicine, but you're, you're insides, 00:17:14.84\00:17:18.08 your chemical balances actually change, 00:17:18.09\00:17:20.66 so your metabolism becomes remarkably difference. 00:17:21.05\00:17:23.67 Therefore, regression can occur. 00:17:24.09\00:17:26.03 So, in talking to John about his question, 00:17:26.44\00:17:29.16 one of the things you know, of course if you 00:17:31.23\00:17:34.12 have a heart attack and I want to get back to this, 00:17:34.13\00:17:36.20 if you have a heart attack you know, it's not 00:17:36.21\00:17:38.64 a time to be worried about regression. 00:17:38.65\00:17:40.39 Right, because that's acute, 00:17:40.95\00:17:42.49 it needs immediate tension. Right, you need 00:17:42.50\00:17:44.22 immediate tension, and you need to go get help 00:17:44.23\00:17:46.69 right away, if you have a heart valve that's bad, 00:17:46.70\00:17:49.11 that needs immediate attention. Okay. 00:17:49.52\00:17:51.37 If you've an infection in your heart you need 00:17:51.38\00:17:53.50 immediate attention and I want to make that 00:17:53.51\00:17:55.34 plain and, and you know, for immediate care 00:17:55.35\00:17:57.56 I don't want someone say, oh! I can take a few 00:17:57.57\00:17:59.42 herbs at home and it will just pass. 00:17:59.43\00:18:01.31 Or change my diet, and not worry about it. 00:18:01.77\00:18:02.74 Right, change my diet and not worry about. 00:18:02.75\00:18:04.27 So, for the acute problem this is the great 00:18:04.28\00:18:07.53 you know, I would, I want a stent, if I've an 00:18:07.54\00:18:09.61 artery that needs to be opened up right away, 00:18:09.62\00:18:11.33 I want to have the stent, but for the 00:18:11.34\00:18:12.89 chronic care of disease getting at the cause of it, 00:18:12.90\00:18:15.39 okay we need to really think about going to 00:18:15.74\00:18:18.28 regression and John I want you to think about 00:18:18.29\00:18:20.61 that in addition to everything else that 00:18:20.62\00:18:23.20 your other physicians that are talking about. 00:18:23.21\00:18:25.76 Yeah, now would you tend to lean more 00:18:26.21\00:18:31.03 toward these stent other than the bypass or is this 00:18:31.04\00:18:35.86 purely case-by-case, right, it has to be determined? 00:18:35.87\00:18:38.70 Shelley that's, that's a very good question 00:18:38.71\00:18:40.58 because you're gonna see differences from 00:18:40.59\00:18:43.18 cardiologist to cardiologist. Okay. Okay, 00:18:43.19\00:18:45.42 I think there's a tendency, if we see it 00:18:45.43\00:18:47.84 you know, if I'm a cardiologist and that 00:18:47.85\00:18:51.43 ones that do the bypass are cardiovascular 00:18:51.44\00:18:53.37 surgeons, they're the ones that cut you, 00:18:53.38\00:18:55.13 the cardiologists are the ones that put the 00:18:55.14\00:18:56.57 stents in and that kind of thing. The cardiology, 00:18:56.58\00:18:59.06 so there's, there's unfortunately 00:18:59.07\00:19:00.62 there might be a monitory tendency, 00:19:00.63\00:19:03.20 now I hope that my colleague would do it, 00:19:03.64\00:19:05.09 but they say, well maybe we should start off with 00:19:05.40\00:19:07.39 putting a stent in. You know, whereas it could, 00:19:07.80\00:19:10.40 sometimes it could go either way. However, 00:19:10.41\00:19:12.58 sometimes you don't even need to have anything 00:19:12.98\00:19:15.41 done except to fall back on diet and lifestyle. 00:19:15.42\00:19:17.93 So, but lets say for John, John doesn't say here 00:19:18.70\00:19:23.03 how blocked his arteries are, but is there like, 00:19:23.47\00:19:27.92 if you've got an artery that's 90% blocked 00:19:27.93\00:19:30.47 you need to something done pretty rapidly, 00:19:30.48\00:19:32.34 right? Depending on the size of the artery, okay, 00:19:32.35\00:19:35.67 okay, if it's a small artery maybe not, 00:19:35.68\00:19:37.78 and also whether it's causing you to have 00:19:38.15\00:19:39.81 symptoms, okay. Okay, remember bypass surgery 00:19:39.82\00:19:43.22 does not prevent a heart attack, stents do not 00:19:43.23\00:19:46.56 prevent heart attacks, okay so in this 00:19:46.57\00:19:49.58 chronic treatment of this okay I mean in order to 00:19:49.59\00:19:52.42 keep, chronic being the long term. 00:19:52.43\00:19:53.90 Right, right long term. For instance you come 00:19:53.91\00:19:55.99 to me and say, I don't feel well. So, we do some 00:19:56.00\00:19:59.55 tests and we find that you do have 00:19:59.56\00:20:00.85 blockages all over. Okay, and I look at you, 00:20:00.86\00:20:03.22 well if you're not having a symptom okay, 00:20:03.56\00:20:06.19 if I can, you can walk seven or eight minutes 00:20:06.50\00:20:08.42 and not feel bad, I'm not gonna give you a 00:20:08.43\00:20:10.80 survival benefit from doing a stent or a bypass. 00:20:10.81\00:20:14.06 Okay. No matter how blocked they are? 00:20:14.43\00:20:16.15 So, it's better to start on something to reverse 00:20:16.59\00:20:19.16 a changing your diet, changing your exercise. 00:20:19.17\00:20:23.53 Unless you had symptoms. Now, some, now some 00:20:23.54\00:20:26.17 arteries are such high risk, the blockage is a 00:20:26.18\00:20:28.72 such an important spot that we say, 00:20:28.73\00:20:30.61 we cannot take any chances, we have to do 00:20:30.62\00:20:33.29 everything we can to help this person until 00:20:33.30\00:20:36.04 they make changes, but unfortunately making 00:20:36.49\00:20:38.30 these changes is very hard for some people. 00:20:38.31\00:20:40.58 They've a hard time on reversing this. 00:20:40.95\00:20:43.10 So, so you know, it really depends 00:20:43.44\00:20:45.78 on a case-by-case situation. You know, 00:20:45.79\00:20:48.17 I have to, something just came to my mind, 00:20:48.18\00:20:50.28 my grandfather had several heart attacks, 00:20:50.90\00:20:53.96 but he was determined that he was gonna go 00:20:53.97\00:20:56.67 out with his boots on, so what he do is when 00:20:56.68\00:20:59.75 he was released from the hospital they had a 00:20:59.76\00:21:02.24 cabin in Ruidoso, New Mexico and he would 00:21:02.25\00:21:04.53 head for this cabin and he'd go out and chop 00:21:04.54\00:21:06.99 a cord of wood and he would do all of these 00:21:07.00\00:21:09.82 things because he thought, if he was going to out, 00:21:09.83\00:21:12.72 he's gonna go out with his boots on. 00:21:12.73\00:21:14.29 But he just after several heart attacks he just 00:21:14.65\00:21:17.86 kept getting a heart that's stronger-and-stronger. 00:21:17.87\00:21:20.94 He lived to be 92 years old and these 00:21:21.11\00:21:23.35 heart attacks happened in his late 40s 00:21:23.36\00:21:25.69 and early 50s. Yeah. So, I think sometimes 00:21:25.70\00:21:28.84 we have the idea of that having had a 00:21:28.85\00:21:31.14 heart attack you could no longer 00:21:31.15\00:21:32.24 exercise, but that's not true. 00:21:32.25\00:21:33.73 No, in fact exercise after heart attack 00:21:33.74\00:21:36.41 is our best friend. You know, in fact 00:21:36.42\00:21:38.88 you've heard of cardiac rehab, we're getting 00:21:38.89\00:21:40.86 people to exercise everyday and on the 00:21:40.87\00:21:43.73 regression studies, for instance some of the 00:21:43.74\00:21:45.87 regression studies have been done, showed it takes 00:21:45.88\00:21:47.87 45 minutes to an hour of aerobic exercise 00:21:47.88\00:21:51.44 a day to see regression. My goodness. 00:21:51.45\00:21:54.46 And just to hold even right now 00:21:54.47\00:21:55.94 they're recommending 30 minutes. 00:21:55.95\00:21:57.54 Now, some people say, five days a week, 00:21:57.95\00:21:59.90 but I'm saying you really, you should do 30 minutes 00:21:59.91\00:22:01.81 everyday because remember it's an exercise 00:22:01.82\00:22:04.33 it changes your internal metabolism. 00:22:04.34\00:22:06.43 So, it only makes sense if you stop exercising 00:22:06.75\00:22:09.23 for a day then you're gonna change 00:22:09.24\00:22:11.10 the metabolism back. So, exercise is the core of 00:22:11.11\00:22:14.23 treatment for chronic coronary disease. 00:22:14.24\00:22:17.05 Okay, if you're trying to reach that level, 00:22:17.06\00:22:20.26 that optimum level there would, 00:22:20.27\00:22:22.40 would walking, I mean like if you're 00:22:22.70\00:22:25.55 trying to reverse this disease. 00:22:25.56\00:22:27.15 Do you walk as long as you're not exerted 00:22:27.56\00:22:30.78 in heavily, or breathing heavy, you do just keep 00:22:30.79\00:22:33.40 walking for 30 to 45 minutes? Well, I'll take 00:22:33.41\00:22:36.11 anything that you're willing to do. Okay. 00:22:36.12\00:22:38.27 But the more exertion we can get, and I said, 00:22:38.28\00:22:40.69 you should get your heart rate up to just 00:22:40.70\00:22:42.24 where it's hard to duty exercise and keep a 00:22:42.25\00:22:45.10 conversation going. Okay. And that's about the 00:22:45.11\00:22:47.61 level you want to get to, but any, any level 00:22:47.62\00:22:50.91 will help I think some. You know, and some 00:22:50.92\00:22:53.38 people do more, some people do less, for me 00:22:53.39\00:22:55.62 personally I try to get out and do 00:22:55.63\00:22:57.38 45 minutes everyday. Now you know, 00:22:57.39\00:22:59.92 I start out slow and then gradually I'm up to 00:22:59.93\00:23:01.92 running, but I'm finding that you know, 00:23:01.93\00:23:03.86 as my joints were out that I'm having to look 00:23:03.87\00:23:06.32 at other you know, swimming, biking, 00:23:06.33\00:23:09.21 but it's the heart rate getting up, 00:23:09.22\00:23:10.63 not necessarily the walking, but most 00:23:10.64\00:23:12.30 people today chose to do the walking. 00:23:12.31\00:23:14.46 Okay, well we've got a question here also from 00:23:14.75\00:23:18.04 Scott in Arizona and Scott writes in and says, 00:23:18.05\00:23:22.02 last year I had a quadruple bypass 00:23:22.03\00:23:25.34 here in Arizona. Why do you consider, 00:23:25.35\00:23:28.10 or what do you consider the most important 00:23:28.44\00:23:30.89 things I can do to help my cardiovascular system? 00:23:30.90\00:23:35.57 Okay, well Scott before we answer your question 00:23:36.32\00:23:38.28 I'm gonna explain to the everyone else out 00:23:38.29\00:23:40.49 there what a quadruple bypass? Well, quad means 00:23:40.50\00:23:43.45 four, so we're talking out four bypasses to different 00:23:43.46\00:23:46.81 areas that are blocked. Mercy. So, one area is 00:23:46.82\00:23:49.70 blocked here and they'll bring another conduit 00:23:49.71\00:23:52.56 or another you know, vein if it's from the 00:23:52.96\00:23:55.55 leg, some people time we use the arteries. 00:23:55.56\00:23:57.53 Those are actually better conduit. And he said, 00:23:57.54\00:23:59.95 four of those to different parts of his heart. 00:23:59.96\00:24:02.05 And what do you consider the most important things? 00:24:02.63\00:24:05.14 Well, let's bring up the next bit of information. 00:24:05.15\00:24:08.41 Well, we've talked about number one, exercise, 00:24:08.74\00:24:11.22 exercise, exercise, deal with stress, okay 00:24:11.23\00:24:15.55 and stress causes a lot of physiologic problems 00:24:15.56\00:24:18.37 and we'll comeback to that in a minute, nutrition, 00:24:18.38\00:24:20.74 cholesterol, next, avoid hypertension, stop smoking 00:24:21.29\00:24:27.37 including being around second hand smoke and 00:24:27.38\00:24:30.48 avoid, take medications when you need to. 00:24:30.49\00:24:33.53 Now, there's some interesting research 00:24:34.36\00:24:36.06 that you don't see published too much about 00:24:36.07\00:24:38.32 other things that help in this treatment of 00:24:38.33\00:24:40.25 cardiovascular disease. One of them you know, 00:24:40.26\00:24:43.78 we've touched on briefly and that's the stress 00:24:43.79\00:24:45.73 factor, but also one thing that goes 00:24:45.74\00:24:48.46 with that is rest. Yes. And I think people that 00:24:48.47\00:24:51.88 rest do better than people that don't rest. 00:24:51.89\00:24:54.61 Well, why is that? Well, God made us to time off, 00:24:54.62\00:24:59.32 in fact the God of our unit or Shelley he works 00:24:59.33\00:25:01.85 six days when he do. He took off his seventh. 00:25:01.86\00:25:04.34 And if he it's good enough for God 00:25:04.35\00:25:05.74 it's good enough for me. And also we sit up 00:25:06.07\00:25:08.37 this night-day cycle. Right. Where people 00:25:08.38\00:25:10.51 sleep at night? Well, God designed a night for, 00:25:10.52\00:25:12.90 for people to sleep. In our society today we're 00:25:12.91\00:25:16.34 breaking that cycle sometime. The body needs 00:25:16.35\00:25:18.76 rest to rejuvenate itself, to give its 00:25:18.77\00:25:21.49 own ability to fight. So, that's one of the things 00:25:21.50\00:25:24.58 I really want to stress, 'cause most people 00:25:24.59\00:25:26.27 don't think rest as a treatment for a 00:25:26.28\00:25:28.92 chronic disease like cardiovascular disease. 00:25:28.93\00:25:31.14 Another thing that you don't hear much is about, 00:25:31.48\00:25:33.50 about laughing. Oh! Yes. Have you ever heard 00:25:33.51\00:25:35.90 this saying that laughter is the best medicine? 00:25:35.91\00:25:37.87 Right. Well, that's been passed on from years 00:25:37.88\00:25:40.29 and years and years and that what we reason people 00:25:40.30\00:25:42.78 say laughter is the best medicine 'cause people 00:25:42.79\00:25:44.67 that laugh make a bunch of good chemicals 00:25:44.68\00:25:46.85 that help their cardiovascular system. 00:25:46.86\00:25:48.71 So, when Proverbs says: A merry heart does 00:25:49.06\00:25:51.10 good like a medicine, it's serious. 00:25:51.11\00:25:52.68 Yes, the Bible has the answers, if we just listen. 00:25:52.69\00:25:54.99 And I always wonder if you just go around 00:25:55.00\00:25:57.17 laughing all the time whether you could really 00:25:57.18\00:25:58.74 reverse disease, I haven't seen, we're taking things 00:25:58.75\00:26:01.21 too serious now, we rarely laugh, 00:26:01.22\00:26:03.04 we rarely do, so if you're ticklish, 00:26:03.05\00:26:04.79 if you're not funny by. Now, I'm not funny by 00:26:05.20\00:26:07.23 nature, but if you, if you're funny by nature 00:26:07.24\00:26:09.43 that's great, if not have someone tickle you. 00:26:09.76\00:26:11.53 Yeah. Another thing that's been shown to 00:26:11.82\00:26:13.65 help people is to have good relationships. 00:26:13.66\00:26:16.25 Yes. Not only with, with God of course, 00:26:16.61\00:26:19.79 but with each other to be happy, to have you know, 00:26:19.80\00:26:23.05 people that have pets do better from a 00:26:23.06\00:26:25.36 cardiovascular standpoint then people 00:26:25.37\00:26:27.14 that don't have pets. People that are married 00:26:27.15\00:26:29.24 do better than people that are single. 00:26:29.25\00:26:31.06 People that go to Church and have an active 00:26:31.35\00:26:33.37 spiritual life do much better as far as 00:26:33.38\00:26:36.25 cardiovascular health then people that don't 00:26:36.26\00:26:38.72 do those things. Another thing that helps 00:26:38.73\00:26:41.20 greatly is, is getting to having your mind 00:26:41.21\00:26:43.96 change sceneries. Okay, getting away from 00:26:43.97\00:26:47.66 your normal activities, taking a rest. 00:26:47.67\00:26:50.40 Now, what does that do physiologically? 00:26:50.41\00:26:52.19 Well your, your body runs the show, okay your 00:26:52.20\00:26:55.34 mind is running things all the time, when you give 00:26:55.35\00:26:57.89 your mind to break from getting away from it all. 00:26:57.90\00:27:00.23 Sometimes you start making these better health 00:27:00.24\00:27:02.99 chemicals; you get rest and you see 00:27:03.00\00:27:04.55 the active vacation. Sure. 00:27:04.56\00:27:05.95 You feel tremendously better. Now, you're not 00:27:05.96\00:27:07.61 gonna hear about this in medical literature 00:27:07.62\00:27:09.42 because it's not a moneymaker, but the 00:27:09.76\00:27:11.98 people that are doing this are, are much healthier 00:27:11.99\00:27:14.68 and much happier. So, treating chronic coronary 00:27:14.69\00:27:16.97 disease, I think it's more lifestyle than anything 00:27:16.98\00:27:20.35 else and treating acute disease I think it's 00:27:20.36\00:27:23.32 probably more intervention than anything else, 00:27:23.33\00:27:25.50 but it takes a marriage of both, of both, 00:27:25.51\00:27:28.69 acutely treating and chronically treating well. 00:27:28.70\00:27:31.42 Well, there we have the. Yeah.
