In addition, I hope to be able to 00:01:40.62\00:01:44.65 show how leading an active lifestyle can 00:01:44.68\00:01:47.66 fit seamlessly into God's plan for each 00:01:47.69\00:01:50.96 of us to enjoy vibrant, fulfilling and 00:01:50.99\00:01:54.47 spiritually and rich lives. When talking about the 00:01:54.50\00:01:58.89 relationship between physical activity and 00:01:58.92\00:02:01.05 health, it's important to define what we mean 00:02:01.08\00:02:04.80 by the word health. To me being healthy 00:02:04.83\00:02:09.63 is not merely the absence of disease 00:02:09.66\00:02:11.96 and infirmity but instead it represents the 00:02:11.99\00:02:15.93 combination of physical, mental, social 00:02:15.96\00:02:19.24 and spiritual well being. It is my view that 00:02:19.27\00:02:24.33 we are individually responsible for our health 00:02:24.36\00:02:27.41 and well being, to the practice of positive 00:02:27.44\00:02:30.98 lifestyle behaviors like not smoking and 00:02:31.01\00:02:35.10 engaging in a daily regiment of moderate 00:02:35.13\00:02:37.55 physical activity. Thus it is our choice 00:02:37.58\00:02:42.45 and no one else's as to whether or 00:02:42.48\00:02:46.09 not we will decide to embrace physical activity 00:02:46.12\00:02:49.72 as an integral part of our lives. 00:02:49.75\00:02:52.87 One of the things I like to emphasize is that 00:02:54.51\00:02:57.59 physical activity can be a joyful experience. 00:02:57.62\00:03:01.27 A good example of this is watching children 00:03:01.30\00:03:05.00 who are engaged in active play at school 00:03:05.03\00:03:07.39 or at home. As any parent or teacher knows, 00:03:07.42\00:03:11.86 young boys and girls have a natural bent 00:03:11.89\00:03:15.42 or inclination towards being active and 00:03:15.45\00:03:19.51 they seem to find great happiness in the 00:03:19.54\00:03:22.36 simplest of activities like riding a bike, 00:03:22.39\00:03:25.59 playing tag, jumping rope or even just digging 00:03:25.62\00:03:30.18 around in a sand box for hours on end. 00:03:30.21\00:03:32.97 Well the attraction of physical activity can 00:03:34.22\00:03:37.04 wane with age. I know many adults who also 00:03:37.07\00:03:41.40 find the sense of joy and fulfillment in being 00:03:41.43\00:03:44.92 physically active. I for one, enjoy running. 00:03:44.95\00:03:49.88 Now I am certainly not a fast runner and 00:03:49.91\00:03:54.37 I don't run as far or as long as I used to. 00:03:54.40\00:03:58.19 But at this stage of my life, with a busy family 00:03:58.22\00:04:03.02 and a job that's very, very hectic always 00:04:03.05\00:04:07.66 on the go, I am quite contend to be able 00:04:07.69\00:04:11.34 to run about 40 minutes are so on moat days of 00:04:11.37\00:04:14.83 the week. When I run, I know I am receiving 00:04:14.86\00:04:20.01 a multitude of physiological and 00:04:20.04\00:04:22.99 psychological benefits, many of which we will 00:04:23.02\00:04:26.12 detail in future programs. In addition I also gain 00:04:26.15\00:04:31.87 a tremendous spiritual blessing when I exercise, 00:04:31.90\00:04:35.53 because it is a daily reminder that God loves 00:04:35.56\00:04:39.94 me so much that he created a wonderfully 00:04:39.97\00:04:43.04 made body to inhabit, that is strong and 00:04:43.07\00:04:46.40 powerful, a body that enables me to meet 00:04:46.43\00:04:50.71 life's physical challenges head on each and 00:04:50.74\00:04:54.39 every day. One of the reasons I look forward 00:04:54.42\00:04:59.28 to my daily run is that it is one of the times 00:04:59.31\00:05:03.05 each day that I truly feel energized in the life. 00:05:03.08\00:05:07.54 When I run I can feel my heart pounding, 00:05:07.57\00:05:12.30 my breathing rate increasing, 00:05:12.33\00:05:14.47 the sweat gathering on my face, 00:05:14.50\00:05:16.92 and the growing stress on leg muscles as 00:05:16.95\00:05:20.13 I trudge up the hills that surround my home 00:05:20.16\00:05:23.19 in Middle Tennessee. There is a reward though 00:05:23.22\00:05:28.50 for my efforts because as I reach the top of 00:05:28.53\00:05:32.08 the rise and begin my descend down the hill, 00:05:32.11\00:05:35.87 I am able to recover, re-gather my strength 00:05:35.90\00:05:40.42 and feel a sense of solid accomplishment 00:05:40.45\00:05:43.39 that at least on this day I have been able 00:05:43.42\00:05:46.70 to find the energy and the strength to meet 00:05:46.73\00:05:49.77 this physical challenge. As I've began to speak 00:05:49.80\00:05:54.34 to audiences on the topic of physical activity 00:05:54.37\00:05:57.57 and health, I have to come realize that not 00:05:57.60\00:06:01.49 only is there a physical dimension to leading 00:06:01.52\00:06:05.03 an active lifestyle, but there is also a spiritual 00:06:05.06\00:06:08.68 dimension to physical activity. 00:06:08.71\00:06:11.19 When we are active we have the opportunity 00:06:11.22\00:06:15.86 and the privilege of exploring and moving 00:06:15.89\00:06:18.80 about the world that God has created for us. 00:06:18.83\00:06:21.91 In thinking about this gift from God, 00:06:21.94\00:06:25.57 I'd like for you to reflect for a moment 00:06:25.60\00:06:28.40 on some thoughts found in a wonderful 00:06:28.43\00:06:31.05 little book called the Adventist Health Style, 00:06:31.08\00:06:34.14 written by David Nieman. 00:06:34.17\00:06:36.09 He writes that there is a God given design 00:06:36.12\00:06:40.75 in nature for action and movement. 00:06:40.78\00:06:43.48 Consider the flowers that open and close daily, 00:06:43.51\00:06:47.42 the circulating ocean currents and orbiting 00:06:47.45\00:06:50.33 planets or the powerful onrush of the wind. 00:06:50.36\00:06:54.19 Water is fresh and clean if taken from a 00:06:54.22\00:06:58.30 rushing stream, but unhealthful when 00:06:58.33\00:07:01.40 drawn from a stagnant pool. 00:07:01.43\00:07:03.44 What is the spiritual meaning of these words? 00:07:04.89\00:07:07.54 To me these statements convey a fundamental 00:07:07.57\00:07:12.16 principle of Christian living that is when we 00:07:12.19\00:07:16.26 daily energized our body with physical activity 00:07:16.29\00:07:19.45 we fit perfectly into God's creation plan for 00:07:19.48\00:07:23.19 the universe, a plan in which movement 00:07:23.22\00:07:26.25 and activity are the norm and not the exception. 00:07:26.28\00:07:30.47 Ellen White a prolific Christian writer also 00:07:31.76\00:07:36.10 speaks about the link between activity 00:07:36.13\00:07:38.37 and health. In her book Ministry of Healing, 00:07:38.40\00:07:42.52 she states that, Action is a law of our being. 00:07:42.55\00:07:47.25 Every organ of the body has it's appointed work, 00:07:47.28\00:07:52.57 upon the performance of which it's development 00:07:52.60\00:07:55.46 and strength depend. The normal action of 00:07:55.49\00:07:59.04 all the organs gives strength and vigor, 00:07:59.07\00:08:01.94 while the tendency of disuse is toward decay 00:08:01.97\00:08:06.42 and death. Bind up an arm, even for few weeks, 00:08:06.45\00:08:11.70 then free it from it's bands, and you will 00:08:11.73\00:08:15.21 see that it is weaker than the one you have 00:08:15.24\00:08:18.12 been using moderately during the same time. 00:08:18.15\00:08:21.21 Inactivity produces the same effect upon 00:08:22.55\00:08:25.10 the whole muscular system. 00:08:25.13\00:08:27.31 What Mrs. White is saying here is that 00:08:29.16\00:08:32.06 the health of our bodies is directly associated 00:08:32.09\00:08:35.40 with them being used on a consistent basis. 00:08:35.43\00:08:38.88 Conversely, when we are physically inactive 00:08:38.91\00:08:43.12 for long periods of time or engaged in physical 00:08:43.15\00:08:46.70 activity on a hit or miss bases, 00:08:46.73\00:08:49.60 our bodies also adapt to this relative lack of 00:08:49.63\00:08:53.63 physical activity by becoming weaker and 00:08:53.66\00:08:57.23 more prone to sickness and disease. 00:08:57.26\00:08:59.98 Unfortunately there is no silver bullet that 00:09:00.01\00:09:04.03 will magically do away with disease and death. 00:09:04.06\00:09:07.47 However, performing regular physical activity 00:09:07.50\00:09:12.03 at a moderate intensity provides so many 00:09:12.06\00:09:15.94 health benefits that it's about as close to 00:09:15.97\00:09:18.89 a silver bullet as you will ever find. 00:09:18.92\00:09:21.83 For those of you who have embraced inactive 00:09:23.46\00:09:25.56 lifestyle there is almost an instinctive 00:09:25.59\00:09:29.15 understanding of how essential and important 00:09:29.18\00:09:32.99 exercise and physical activity are in warning 00:09:33.02\00:09:37.25 of chronic disease and maintaining normal 00:09:37.28\00:09:40.74 levels of function. For those of you however 00:09:40.77\00:09:44.94 who are not as active as you know you should be, 00:09:44.97\00:09:48.11 I hope that these series of programs will act 00:09:48.14\00:09:51.53 as a catalyst to motivate you to become healthier. 00:09:51.56\00:09:55.63 For some this may be journey you wanted 00:09:55.66\00:09:59.82 to take it various time in your life, 00:09:59.85\00:10:02.04 but for some reason you never took that 00:10:02.07\00:10:04.97 first step. For others you may have begun a 00:10:05.00\00:10:09.17 fitness program in the past but you didn't stick 00:10:09.20\00:10:12.25 with it long enough to see any lasting benefits. 00:10:12.28\00:10:16.29 Whatever the case may be, it is my sincere 00:10:16.32\00:10:20.72 prayer and hope that the material presented 00:10:20.75\00:10:23.95 in these health lectures begins to encourage 00:10:23.98\00:10:26.92 you to maintain a regular physical activity program. 00:10:26.95\00:10:31.85 As you began this journey, I want you to remember 00:10:33.16\00:10:36.90 that the path to wellness and good health is 00:10:36.93\00:10:39.97 not a short one, but instead is a wide 00:10:40.00\00:10:44.42 expanse that can be travel the rest of your life, 00:10:44.45\00:10:47.36 if that is your desire. As the evidence will show 00:10:47.39\00:10:52.60 it is not necessary to be extreme when performing 00:10:52.63\00:10:57.07 physical activity, but it is essential to be active 00:10:57.10\00:11:01.88 on a moderate and regular basis. 00:11:01.91\00:11:04.34 In order to reap the major health benefits 00:11:04.37\00:11:07.71 that activity can provide such as better way 00:11:07.74\00:11:11.13 control, lower blood pressure and an increase 00:11:11.16\00:11:15.06 in bone density. Such an approach is consistent 00:11:15.09\00:11:19.72 with the notion that moderation and physical 00:11:19.75\00:11:22.69 activity can lead to good health. 00:11:22.72\00:11:25.67 Although I am going to be presenting information 00:11:27.73\00:11:30.10 that describes the association between 00:11:30.13\00:11:32.86 physical activity and health, 00:11:32.89\00:11:34.95 I realize how important it is to translate this 00:11:34.98\00:11:39.12 knowledge into something that is useful 00:11:39.15\00:11:42.05 and practical and meaningful. 00:11:42.08\00:11:45.18 So over the course of these thoughts we will 00:11:46.17\00:11:49.09 be mentioning not only the health benefits of 00:11:49.12\00:11:52.10 physical activity, but also talking about some 00:11:52.13\00:11:55.89 of the simple ways to include physical activity 00:11:55.92\00:11:59.18 and exercise into your daily schedule. 00:11:59.21\00:12:02.22 We will also be looking at ways to over come 00:12:02.25\00:12:04.90 various physical activity; looking at ways of 00:12:04.93\00:12:08.33 how to monetary how much physical activity 00:12:08.36\00:12:10.56 you are actually doing as well. 00:12:10.59\00:12:12.96 As we begin this journey together 00:12:14.49\00:12:16.49 I strongly believe that a secret to staying 00:12:16.52\00:12:21.73 on the road to better health is to find the 00:12:21.76\00:12:24.82 meaningful reason to adopt and to 00:12:24.85\00:12:28.37 commit to a healthy lifestyle. 00:12:28.40\00:12:30.93 There is no single perfect reason that 00:12:32.07\00:12:34.85 will work for everyone, but there is a reason 00:12:34.88\00:12:38.77 that will make sense to you, a reason that 00:12:38.80\00:12:41.79 you can identity with. For some it may be 00:12:41.82\00:12:46.41 that in listening to these programs 00:12:46.44\00:12:48.46 you will finally come to appreciate the sheer 00:12:48.49\00:12:51.57 enormity of the health blessings that come 00:12:51.60\00:12:54.59 from adopting a healthy lifestyle. 00:12:54.62\00:12:57.05 May be you have decided to become physically 00:12:58.44\00:13:00.38 fit because you are not functioning 00:13:00.41\00:13:02.71 as well as you used to, and you want to 00:13:02.74\00:13:05.67 become more fit and stronger so that 00:13:05.70\00:13:09.43 you can accomplish the daily tasks of living 00:13:09.46\00:13:12.01 more effectively. It will be this reason that 00:14:14.42\00:14:18.94 will give you the inner strength to turn 00:14:18.97\00:14:21.16 down that second serving of ice cream 00:14:21.19\00:14:23.14 or that late night snack. It will be this reason 00:14:23.17\00:14:27.71 that will keep you from loosing your result 00:14:27.74\00:14:30.33 to stay healthy and fit when the temptation 00:14:30.36\00:14:33.79 to abandoned this resolve is difficult to resist. 00:14:33.82\00:14:37.52 Remaining committed to a daily program of 00:14:39.02\00:14:41.34 physical activity will help you to determine 00:14:41.37\00:14:45.00 and to develop an internal complex 00:14:45.03\00:14:48.00 that will guide you away from a sedentary 00:14:48.03\00:14:50.42 lifestyle and lead you instead towards 00:14:50.45\00:14:54.96 higher levels of wellness and total health. 00:14:54.99\00:14:58.29 Did you know that the Bible speaks well 00:15:00.08\00:15:01.98 of being in good health. In third John Verse 2, 00:15:02.01\00:15:07.58 God's servants says Beloved, 00:15:07.61\00:15:11.29 I wish above all things that thou mayest 00:15:11.32\00:15:15.19 prosper and be in the health, even as thy 00:15:15.22\00:15:18.89 soul prospereth. Christ is the source of our 00:15:18.92\00:15:24.19 physical and mental and emotional and 00:15:24.22\00:15:26.85 spiritual health. And much of his ministry was 00:15:26.88\00:15:30.67 devoted to acts of healing. God wants us to enjoy 00:15:30.70\00:15:35.34 this beautiful world that he has fashioned 00:15:35.37\00:15:38.01 and to that end he has created and designed 00:15:38.04\00:15:42.50 us to be active and noble. In fact one can make 00:15:42.53\00:15:47.90 the case that living a sedentary lifestyle 00:15:47.93\00:15:51.15 actually runs contrary to God's ideal of physical 00:15:51.18\00:15:55.16 activity as the natural state of affairs for a 00:15:55.19\00:15:59.22 universe that operates on the fundamental 00:15:59.25\00:16:02.18 principles of actions and movement. 00:16:02.21\00:16:05.11 The idea that sedentary living is not a normal 00:16:06.13\00:16:09.75 condition is also expressed, 00:16:09.78\00:16:12.52 in the profess to one of the chapters in the 00:16:12.55\00:16:16.14 1996 Surgeon General's report on Physical Activity 00:16:16.17\00:16:19.86 and Health. In this profess the author state 00:16:19.89\00:16:23.80 that the exercise boom is not just a fad; 00:16:23.83\00:16:28.70 it is a return to 'natural' activity the kind for 00:16:28.73\00:16:33.65 which our bodies are engineered and which 00:16:33.68\00:16:36.34 facilitates the proper function of our 00:16:36.37\00:16:38.93 biochemistry and physiology sedentary existence, 00:16:38.96\00:16:44.19 possible for great numbers of people 00:16:44.22\00:16:46.97 only during the last century, represents a 00:16:47.00\00:16:50.68 transient, unnatural aberration. 00:16:50.71\00:16:54.43 There is an intimate connection between 00:16:56.55\00:16:59.47 physical and spiritual health. 00:16:59.50\00:17:01.73 And I would like to tell you about a personal 00:17:01.76\00:17:04.37 experience that illustrates this point. 00:17:04.40\00:17:07.46 A few years ago I was speaking about the 00:17:08.86\00:17:12.30 positive benefits of physical activity to a 00:17:12.33\00:17:15.57 group of church members who are attending a 00:17:15.60\00:17:18.13 summer retreat in the Hills of Prescott, 00:17:18.16\00:17:20.83 Arizona. During this week long health series 00:17:20.86\00:17:24.87 I was part of a small group of individuals 00:17:24.90\00:17:27.99 who walked in the morning and evening 00:17:28.02\00:17:30.54 after eating. On one of our excursions 00:17:30.57\00:17:35.01 I remember walking for about 15 minutes 00:17:35.04\00:17:38.04 or so until we reach the end of the back 00:17:38.07\00:17:41.19 road that was surrounded by hundreds of tall pine 00:17:41.22\00:17:45.03 trees. I remember that we stopped, 00:17:45.06\00:17:48.78 held hands, sang a few songs and gave thanks 00:17:48.81\00:17:54.01 to God for this fellowship experience and for 00:17:54.04\00:17:57.52 giving us the physical strength to walk, 00:17:57.55\00:18:00.73 to gather in this beautiful setting 00:18:00.76\00:18:03.57 and to sense His wonderful presents. 00:18:03.60\00:18:06.26 Throughout this in prompt to worship service, 00:18:07.51\00:18:10.29 the wind blow through the trees and that 00:18:10.32\00:18:14.50 sound echoed all around us. 00:18:14.53\00:18:17.29 Now I don't know if you ever heard wind blow 00:18:17.32\00:18:20.65 through pine trees, but it is a beautiful, 00:18:20.68\00:18:24.56 heavenly, almost in describable sound 00:18:24.59\00:18:28.18 like God was whispering to us that day. 00:18:28.21\00:18:31.38 But we, this intrepid band of worshipers 00:18:31.41\00:18:36.37 on this day we are retreated to a 00:18:36.40\00:18:38.33 wonderful spiritually experience that 00:18:38.36\00:18:41.30 I will never forgot. Being physically fit 00:18:41.33\00:18:45.78 can allow you to have experiences that you 00:18:45.81\00:18:48.92 can remember and treasure for the rest 00:18:48.95\00:18:50.90 of your life. A few years ago I had the 00:18:50.93\00:18:55.24 opportunity to visit a former student of 00:18:55.27\00:18:57.21 mine who lived in Scotland. During this 00:18:57.24\00:19:00.63 visit my student Ian asked if I wanted 00:19:00.66\00:19:04.80 to take a wee little hike at the morning prior 00:19:04.83\00:19:08.56 to a talk I was to give later that day. 00:19:08.59\00:19:10.87 I said fine. I thought this would be a decent 00:19:10.90\00:19:14.55 substitute for run. Well when we arrived at 00:19:14.58\00:19:19.16 the walking site, I suddenly realized 00:19:19.19\00:19:21.85 that the wee little hike wasn't going to be 00:19:21.88\00:19:23.95 horizontal, but instead it was a hike up on 00:19:23.98\00:19:27.56 a mountain. So we started up and soon 00:19:27.59\00:19:31.80 I was drenched with sweat thinking to myself 00:19:31.83\00:19:35.36 I have a talk to give later today to a group 00:19:35.39\00:19:37.58 of faculty and students and I am not gonna 00:19:37.61\00:19:39.87 look very distinguished. But you know it was 00:19:39.90\00:19:43.94 all worth it because I have a picture in 00:19:43.97\00:19:47.16 my office of Ian and I, sitting at the top of 00:19:47.19\00:19:50.60 a mountain on a blue sky day overlooking 00:19:50.63\00:19:54.72 a sparkling lake. In recounting this experience, 00:19:54.75\00:19:59.26 I realized that it was all made possible 00:19:59.29\00:20:02.66 by the fact that I was fit enough to climb 00:20:02.69\00:20:05.83 that mountain and view a beautiful expanse 00:20:05.86\00:20:09.66 of God handy work. In addition to having 00:20:09.69\00:20:15.23 mountain topic experiences, 00:20:15.26\00:20:17.07 being physically active can allow you to 00:20:17.10\00:20:20.37 experience simple pleasures that are just 00:20:20.40\00:20:23.59 as meaningful. Imagine that you are a grand 00:20:23.62\00:20:28.15 parent and that you and your granddaughter 00:20:28.18\00:20:31.21 are driving down a country road sharing 00:20:31.24\00:20:34.43 conversation together.
