The following program presents principles 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.13 designed to promote good health 00:00:03.14\00:00:04.65 and is not intended to take the place of 00:00:04.66\00:00:06.74 personalized professional care. 00:00:08.55\00:00:09.52 The opinions and ideas expressed 00:00:09.53\00:00:10.92 are those of the speaker. 00:00:10.93\00:00:12.11 Viewers are encouraged to draw their 00:00:12.12\00:00:14.20 own conclusions about the 00:00:14.21\00:00:15.56 information presented. 00:00:15.57\00:00:16.68 Hello, my name is Allan Handysides 00:00:36.04\00:00:38.32 and it's a pleasure to be with you here 00:00:38.33\00:00:40.02 today on this program of Wonderfully Made. 00:00:40.03\00:00:42.46 We live in a very interesting world. 00:00:42.47\00:00:45.35 We live in a world where advertising 00:00:45.36\00:00:47.75 can make all sorts of claims and perhaps 00:00:47.76\00:00:51.10 one of the largest growing industries 00:00:51.11\00:00:53.86 is that for food supplements 00:00:53.87\00:00:56.60 and alternative types of medication. 00:00:56.61\00:00:59.59 I think as we considered this sometimes 00:00:59.60\00:01:02.93 we have difficulty in separating fact 00:01:02.94\00:01:04.78 from fiction. It's not always 00:01:04.79\00:01:07.00 easy to know what is truly 00:01:07.01\00:01:08.96 a remedy or maybe a snake oil panacea 00:01:08.97\00:01:13.66 that suppose to cure everything that may ail us. 00:01:13.67\00:01:17.06 Today I am very fortunate to have 00:01:17.07\00:01:19.15 with us here on our set Stoy Proctor 00:01:19.16\00:01:21.56 who is a nutritionist. He is actually the 00:01:21.57\00:01:24.89 chairman of the General Conference 00:01:24.90\00:01:26.09 Nutrition Council, he is an associate member 00:01:26.10\00:01:29.19 of the General Conference's 00:01:29.20\00:01:30.21 Health Ministries Department. 00:01:30.22\00:01:31.84 He is also an adjunct professor 00:01:31.85\00:01:33.63 at the Loma Linda School Public 00:01:33.64\00:01:35.06 Health and he is going to be discussing 00:01:35.07\00:01:37.73 with us some of these food supplements. 00:01:37.74\00:01:41.39 Stoy, it's a real privilege to be with you 00:01:41.40\00:01:44.58 and have you on the screen. 00:01:44.59\00:01:45.60 My pleasure being here. Thank you. 00:01:45.61\00:01:47.21 You know the Stoy has told that about 00:01:47.22\00:01:49.18 500 years ago Shen-Nung was 00:01:49.19\00:01:52.31 the emperor of China and he, 00:01:52.32\00:01:56.17 I believe was the gentleman who was responsible 00:01:56.18\00:02:00.70 for introducing herbal remedies 00:02:00.71\00:02:03.40 into Chinese medicine. 00:02:03.41\00:02:04.88 It said that he took over 365 different varieties 00:02:04.89\00:02:11.28 of herbs. One per day. 00:02:11.29\00:02:13.78 Probably one per day, 00:02:13.79\00:02:15.11 but one day he turned green and died. 00:02:15.12\00:02:19.33 What could have happened to him? 00:02:19.34\00:02:20.65 Unfortunately we don't know 00:02:20.66\00:02:22.74 which of those herbs, 00:02:22.75\00:02:24.71 was the toxic one and that is precisely 00:02:24.72\00:02:27.55 the dilemma that we are facing today 00:02:27.56\00:02:29.96 even though Chinese medicine is based on his, 00:02:29.97\00:02:33.08 biology. We don't know 00:02:33.09\00:02:35.98 what it was that turned him green 00:02:35.99\00:02:38.37 and today the question 00:02:38.38\00:02:40.84 is how do we separate, 00:02:40.85\00:02:42.26 what is good from what is bad? 00:02:42.27\00:02:47.12 So I am going to ask you 00:02:47.13\00:02:48.40 how do you tell the difference, Stoy? 00:02:48.41\00:02:50.15 Well, it's difficult, the US Food and Drug 00:02:50.16\00:02:55.26 Administration back in 1994 passed 00:02:55.27\00:02:59.21 the Supplement and Health Education Act 00:02:59.22\00:03:02.25 and they have defined some of these 00:03:02.26\00:03:05.61 terms such as; drugs and supplements 00:03:05.62\00:03:08.58 and a supplement basically is any vitamin, 00:03:08.59\00:03:12.83 mineral, amino acid or protein, 00:03:12.84\00:03:17.21 some type of plant enzymes, 00:03:17.22\00:03:20.47 herbs and what's interesting to be called 00:03:20.48\00:03:23.52 a food supplement, 00:03:23.53\00:03:24.66 they can even include organs of animals 00:03:24.67\00:03:28.67 like beef liver, beef spleen, 00:03:28.68\00:03:32.50 goats you know ears 00:03:32.51\00:03:34.76 or they can put all these kinds of supplements. 00:03:34.77\00:03:37.37 A few years ago I was visiting 00:03:37.38\00:03:39.62 a friend of mine then they were very excited 00:03:39.63\00:03:41.70 about his new supplement 00:03:41.71\00:03:42.83 and these people were total 00:03:42.84\00:03:44.59 vegetarian and I said well, 00:03:44.60\00:03:46.65 what's in this supplement 00:03:46.66\00:03:48.10 if doing such great things for you? 00:03:48.11\00:03:50.49 And He said, I don't know, 00:03:50.50\00:03:51.47 well, I said, give me the bottle, 00:03:51.48\00:03:52.70 let me read this, and I read bottle 00:03:52.71\00:03:53.94 and there was liver extract, 00:03:53.95\00:03:56.44 there was spleen extract from beef 00:03:56.45\00:04:00.49 and other animals and they were so shrugged 00:04:00.50\00:04:05.19 but you know that's a problem, 00:04:05.20\00:04:06.54 it can contain all these things 00:04:06.55\00:04:08.44 whereas a drug now, there is very specific. 00:04:08.45\00:04:13.02 A drug is can be some of the same substances, 00:04:13.03\00:04:16.49 some synthetic but it must be used 00:04:16.50\00:04:20.41 for medicinal purpose or medical purposes, 00:04:20.42\00:04:22.76 and what's the difference is that 00:04:22.77\00:04:25.42 a drug must undergo extensive testing 00:04:25.43\00:04:28.66 and they must prove beyond 00:04:28.67\00:04:30.94 the reasonable goal that this drug is going 00:04:30.95\00:04:33.14 to be beneficial and not harmful. 00:04:33.15\00:04:34.94 And it undergoes certain reviews 00:04:34.95\00:04:40.61 by peers of specialist in that particular 00:04:40.62\00:04:44.85 area where as a food supplement does not 00:04:44.86\00:04:47.53 have to go through any these tests. 00:04:47.54\00:04:49.17 So we the consumers how do we find out about 00:04:49.18\00:04:57.05 a food supplement I mean what, 00:04:57.06\00:04:58.78 what guidance could you give to us 00:04:58.79\00:05:02.13 if we are going to be looking 00:05:02.14\00:05:03.97 at a food supplement and to say you know 00:05:03.98\00:05:06.42 how do we find out this is good 00:05:06.43\00:05:07.74 or this is not so good, 00:05:07.75\00:05:08.91 this maybe harmful? 00:05:08.92\00:05:09.98 Where do we get that information? 00:05:09.99\00:05:12.43 Now it's interesting and that's a good question, 00:05:12.44\00:05:15.62 you know, when you maybe given Cipro 00:05:15.63\00:05:18.39 or some of the antibiotics 00:05:18.40\00:05:20.53 or some of the drugs it was in the package 00:05:20.54\00:05:22.71 you will have a long list of things 00:05:22.72\00:05:25.71 it will do for you. 00:05:25.72\00:05:26.69 Some of the things that are been observed 00:05:26.70\00:05:28.70 in another people. None of this has 00:05:28.71\00:05:30.84 to be done with the supplement. 00:05:30.85\00:05:32.62 Now in 1994 when they passed this act, 00:05:32.63\00:05:35.62 they required although it isn't heavily enforced 00:05:35.63\00:05:38.76 but they required a product, 00:05:38.77\00:05:42.63 a food supplement product to contain 00:05:42.64\00:05:45.42 at least seven factors. 00:05:45.43\00:05:47.31 Number one; the active ingredient 00:05:47.32\00:05:50.48 must be identified, especially less Antoni 00:05:50.49\00:05:53.64 or Salt Primal somewhere it must be identified. 00:05:53.65\00:05:56.46 And number two, there must be, 00:05:56.47\00:05:59.19 they must tell you how many capsules 00:05:59.20\00:06:01.57 or how many teaspoons or how many milligrams 00:06:01.58\00:06:04.45 it must be, quality must be measured. 00:06:04.46\00:06:07.07 There must be a structure and function 00:06:07.08\00:06:10.97 claim on each of these products 00:06:10.98\00:06:13.17 and this is what's most interesting 00:06:13.18\00:06:15.13 and these products must say that 00:06:15.14\00:06:17.42 this product was not evaluated by the Food 00:06:17.43\00:06:20.86 and Drug Administration. Number two. 00:06:20.87\00:06:23.14 It has to say that on the product. 00:06:23.15\00:06:24.42 On the product, it suppose to not all do, 00:06:24.43\00:06:26.15 some do, some don't. 00:06:26.16\00:06:27.62 I also must say that this product is not intended 00:06:27.63\00:06:32.56 to diagnose or treat or cure the disease. 00:06:32.57\00:06:37.28 Now then why should I take it, 00:06:37.29\00:06:41.04 if it, it hasn't been evaluated by the FDA, 00:06:41.05\00:06:44.72 if it tells you it's not intended to cure 00:06:44.73\00:06:47.13 or to treat or to cure, 00:06:47.14\00:06:48.90 so there is a problem there 00:06:48.91\00:06:50.56 but anyway the Food and Drug 00:06:50.57\00:06:51.93 Administration does have some power 00:06:51.94\00:06:53.20 in that area. 00:06:53.21\00:06:54.18 Also, so as a consume you must, 00:06:54.19\00:06:57.53 you must look to find these seven qualification 00:06:57.54\00:07:00.87 I am got through all seven yet. 00:07:00.88\00:07:02.01 Also they must tell you if there is any 00:07:02.02\00:07:05.26 health claim on there. 00:07:05.27\00:07:07.19 They might be able to say on there that, 00:07:07.20\00:07:10.26 that this calcium supplement has been shown 00:07:10.27\00:07:14.06 to improve the bone, 00:07:14.07\00:07:16.55 strength of the bones 00:07:16.56\00:07:17.92 and maybe reduce the risk of osteoporosis. 00:07:17.93\00:07:20.45 They are allowed to make some claims 00:07:20.46\00:07:23.25 like they are providing there some 00:07:23.26\00:07:24.48 resource to back it up. 00:07:24.49\00:07:25.63 Now that's for a specific ingredient. 00:07:25.64\00:07:29.07 Yes, specific ingredient. 00:07:29.08\00:07:30.42 But that does not necessarily apply. 00:07:30.43\00:07:31.50 That's exactly right. 00:07:31.51\00:07:32.48 To the total package. No, no. 00:07:32.49\00:07:33.70 Is there other words they may write 00:07:33.71\00:07:35.86 on the benefits of say there is some iron 00:07:35.87\00:07:39.02 and it may say this is good 00:07:39.03\00:07:40.33 for an iron deficiency. Right. 00:07:40.34\00:07:42.49 But of course it could only be, 00:07:42.50\00:07:43.82 maybe only 1 milligram or a ½ milligram. 00:07:43.83\00:07:46.02 It may not be very much on there 00:07:46.03\00:07:47.00 but the FDA does have some jurisdiction 00:07:47.01\00:07:50.41 over that area. Another thing 00:07:50.42\00:07:51.92 is very important is that they should give you 00:07:51.93\00:07:54.95 the name and address and contact number 00:07:54.96\00:07:57.47 so you can ask for more information. 00:07:57.48\00:07:59.44 So if you find a product that meets 00:07:59.45\00:08:01.97 all this seven criteria it at least 00:08:01.98\00:08:04.64 it's gone a long way to give you 00:08:04.65\00:08:06.51 some information. It still doesn't tell you 00:08:06.52\00:08:09.22 what is really gonna do for you 00:08:09.23\00:08:11.21 and it still doesn't have to provide you 00:08:11.22\00:08:13.96 the scientific research to prove it 00:08:13.97\00:08:16.77 like a drug does. You know I have a friend 00:08:16.78\00:08:19.52 he told me that because we travel a lot, 00:08:19.53\00:08:21.55 he said to me I want to give you 00:08:21.56\00:08:23.15 this medication so I said, well, 00:08:23.16\00:08:25.80 what it is? He said, oh, 00:08:25.81\00:08:26.88 it's a Chinese medication, 00:08:26.89\00:08:28.16 I said, but what's in it? 00:08:28.17\00:08:29.14 He said I don't know it's called pao jiang 00:08:29.15\00:08:31.02 or something. So I looked at it 00:08:31.03\00:08:32.32 of course it has only got Chinese letter 00:08:32.33\00:08:33.86 on this I couldn't read what it is. 00:08:33.87\00:08:35.35 A little, a little vial of dark brown 00:08:35.36\00:08:39.19 things it smells to me is that got some liquors 00:08:39.20\00:08:41.20 in it but I really can't tell what's in that. 00:08:41.21\00:08:44.67 This is what you mean by being able to 00:08:44.68\00:08:46.68 at least identify what it is 00:08:46.69\00:08:49.00 and even identify who is manufacturing it. 00:08:49.01\00:08:51.30 I can't even tell from looking at this 00:08:51.31\00:08:53.49 who is manufacturing it so. 00:08:53.50\00:08:54.90 But see if it was manufactured 00:08:54.91\00:08:56.24 and sold in United States. 00:08:56.25\00:08:57.76 They would have to put it in English, 00:08:57.77\00:08:59.32 not just Chinese. So that's one 00:08:59.33\00:09:02.98 interesting, advantage 00:09:02.99\00:09:04.95 we have in the United States. 00:09:04.96\00:09:06.13 Are there any other steps that are important 00:09:06.14\00:09:08.71 for these manufacturers for instance, 00:09:08.72\00:09:10.77 let's say I decided that 00:09:10.78\00:09:11.88 I wanted sell a peppermint extract. 00:09:11.89\00:09:16.28 And that it was very good for burping or it 00:09:16.29\00:09:19.04 was good for gases. 00:09:19.05\00:09:20.81 Could I go around to manufacture 00:09:20.82\00:09:23.12 this stuff put it on the market, 00:09:23.13\00:09:25.09 put my address on their, 00:09:25.10\00:09:26.71 put the ingredients in that, 00:09:26.72\00:09:29.05 do I have to do any registration or 00:09:29.06\00:09:30.75 am I just free to do that? 00:09:30.76\00:09:32.59 Well, you are supposed to register the product 00:09:32.60\00:09:35.44 if it's a new product that it's not 00:09:35.45\00:09:38.43 on the market since 1994. 00:09:38.44\00:09:40.72 There is only one problem, 00:09:40.73\00:09:42.32 nobody has a list of the products 00:09:42.33\00:09:45.48 they are on the market in 1994. 00:09:45.49\00:09:48.03 The botanical or the supplement companies 00:09:48.04\00:09:51.72 don't have the FDA, 00:09:51.73\00:09:52.82 doesn't have it. So it's quite difficult 00:09:52.83\00:09:56.62 and I suppose that's why the Food and Drug 00:09:56.63\00:09:58.86 Administration say you are going to have 00:09:58.87\00:10:00.34 to approve that and so if there ever 00:10:00.35\00:10:02.36 caught on it and examine the FDA 00:10:02.37\00:10:05.91 may say to them, wait just a minute, 00:10:05.92\00:10:08.07 this is a new product 00:10:08.08\00:10:09.39 and you have not registered it. 00:10:09.40\00:10:10.73 So there is at least, It's on the books, 00:10:10.74\00:10:13.94 but it's because the Food and Drug 00:10:13.95\00:10:16.05 Administration has, their under staffed, 00:10:16.06\00:10:18.35 they are not able to check out 00:10:18.36\00:10:20.20 all these claims. It is really on the, 00:10:20.21\00:10:23.09 it's responsibility of the maker 00:10:23.10\00:10:26.36 and the distributor to proof 00:10:26.37\00:10:28.35 that this product will do what it says. 00:10:28.36\00:10:31.05 But most of these studies we don't have 00:10:31.06\00:10:35.74 that kind of information. 00:10:35.75\00:10:36.75 You know I read a very interesting report 00:10:36.76\00:10:39.09 it was actually one of the Canadian journals 00:10:39.10\00:10:42.42 that I read it and they talked about 00:10:42.43\00:10:44.96 the products that they had looked at. 00:10:44.97\00:10:46.65 They said that they examine 20 products 00:10:46.66\00:10:49.38 I believe. Ginseng was one of the products 00:10:49.39\00:10:52.32 they we were looking at. 00:10:52.33\00:10:53.30 And they said that they could find 00:10:53.31\00:10:55.30 the several things, one that the amount of 00:10:55.31\00:10:57.24 ginseng in each product varied that's between 00:10:57.25\00:11:01.32 the different makers. 00:11:01.33\00:11:02.54 But also within the actual one 00:11:02.55\00:11:05.01 may cut the quantity varied. 00:11:05.02\00:11:07.69 They also found that they were quantities 00:11:07.70\00:11:09.95 of lead and mercury of varying amounts 00:11:09.96\00:11:12.82 in the different products and then they found 00:11:12.83\00:11:15.42 that there maybe a many different kinds of 00:11:15.43\00:11:17.90 additives or what possibly could be called 00:11:17.91\00:11:21.52 pollutants if you were expecting a pure compound 00:11:21.53\00:11:23.97 in these preparations. Is there some kind of 00:11:23.98\00:11:28.33 regulation about the standards 00:11:28.34\00:11:31.08 and the quantities of these preparations? 00:11:31.09\00:11:33.97 Unfortunately no, and that's a problem 00:11:33.98\00:11:36.56 with some of the herbs that there are 00:11:36.57\00:11:38.07 several problems. Number one; 00:11:38.08\00:11:39.55 the dosage or the amount in a protein in that, 00:11:39.56\00:11:43.61 let's say a teaspoon or 10 milligrams 00:11:43.62\00:11:45.62 is the active ingredient is not always 00:11:45.63\00:11:48.01 the same but remember they should identify 00:11:48.02\00:11:50.14 what the active ingredient is and they should 00:11:50.15\00:11:52.72 say that there are so many capsules 00:11:52.73\00:11:54.93 in the little bottle or package or whatever. 00:11:54.94\00:11:57.06 But they don't have to say how much of the 00:11:57.07\00:12:00.00 active ingredient is in there and so that's the 00:12:00.01\00:12:03.34 problem and not only the Canadian study 00:12:03.35\00:12:05.59 but good house keeping, 00:12:05.60\00:12:07.02 University of Arkansas 00:12:07.03\00:12:08.18 I have in my notes here of several companies 00:12:08.19\00:12:10.90 that there are reports of research 00:12:10.91\00:12:13.59 where they have examine these products 00:12:13.60\00:12:14.92 and there are different amounts. 00:12:14.93\00:12:16.41 Now there are few companies 00:12:16.42\00:12:18.42 that do have standardized dosages 00:12:18.43\00:12:20.77 and so you can counter 00:12:20.78\00:12:22.25 and what's nice about a few companies. 00:12:22.26\00:12:24.56 They have some little research out there 00:12:24.57\00:12:27.57 and let's say in the research they gave people 00:12:27.58\00:12:31.68 the Valerian, let's say that's something 00:12:31.69\00:12:33.79 that suppose to help people sleep better 00:12:33.80\00:12:35.81 at night like for insomnia and they may say well, 00:12:35.82\00:12:39.19 so many milligrams of this per capsule 00:12:39.20\00:12:41.19 were used in the study and so they will put on 00:12:41.20\00:12:44.51 their box, on their package. 00:12:44.52\00:12:46.33 The same amount of milligrams 00:12:46.34\00:12:48.80 are to be taken you know before bedtime 00:12:48.81\00:12:51.45 or something like that. 00:12:51.46\00:12:52.43 So there are some companies will do that. 00:12:52.44\00:12:53.74 Many companies do not and so there is 00:12:53.75\00:12:55.85 just no standardization. 00:12:55.86\00:12:57.18 Another problem is as you've mentioned 00:12:57.19\00:12:59.91 the purity is not also required 00:12:59.92\00:13:02.70 where we have and when we have a drug 00:13:02.71\00:13:05.20 you know you can, 00:13:05.21\00:13:06.52 you know like aspirin for instance. 00:13:06.53\00:13:08.24 You know exactly how much of the active 00:13:08.25\00:13:10.52 ingredients in aspirin or some of the other 00:13:10.53\00:13:12.40 drugs because there are strictly ready, 00:13:12.41\00:13:14.49 they are strictly regulated. 00:13:14.50\00:13:15.82 But when it comes to the supplement 00:13:15.83\00:13:18.08 or the purity is not regulated, 00:13:18.09\00:13:20.62 is not required and so we may have 00:13:20.63\00:13:23.20 different amounts, some don't have any 00:13:23.21\00:13:25.53 for instance they found that some the weight 00:13:25.54\00:13:28.49 control or weight management products 00:13:28.50\00:13:31.53 contain amphetamines that's a highly 00:13:31.54\00:13:34.60 stimulating affect. They will find in others 00:13:34.61\00:13:37.05 contain some other drug like caffeine 00:13:37.06\00:13:40.04 and you know it makes you think you are 00:13:40.05\00:13:43.15 being picked up and got a lot of energy with, 00:13:43.16\00:13:44.83 the supplement industries they talks 00:13:44.84\00:13:46.88 a lot about energy you know this will give you 00:13:46.89\00:13:48.56 lot of energy. Well, sometimes 00:13:48.57\00:13:50.24 this energy is coming from caffeine 00:13:50.25\00:13:51.79 or some other stimulant. 00:13:51.80\00:13:52.95 So that's at least two problems in the area 00:13:52.96\00:13:56.52 and of course another problem is that 00:13:56.53\00:14:01.14 then it's unlike the drug area 00:14:01.15\00:14:04.78 if the company that manufactures a product 00:14:04.79\00:14:07.83 if they get several complains about people 00:14:07.84\00:14:10.77 dying or if people got heart attack 00:14:10.78\00:14:13.78 or if they got liver toxicity, 00:14:13.79\00:14:16.29 liver malfunction they don't have 00:14:16.30\00:14:18.61 to report that, where as a drug company does. 00:14:18.62\00:14:21.22 You know I really want to be sure that 00:14:21.23\00:14:23.96 our viewers don't get the idea 00:14:23.97\00:14:26.13 that we think that drug companies 00:14:26.14\00:14:27.72 are just fine and that manufactures 00:14:27.73\00:14:30.33 or food supplements are just wrong. 00:14:30.34\00:14:32.59 Oh! No wrong. 00:14:32.60\00:14:34.28 That would be a very gross misconception, 00:14:34.29\00:14:35.26 you have some, you have some, 00:14:35.27\00:14:36.24 for instance think about you know 00:14:36.25\00:14:37.22 we have just seen the Vioxx, right, 00:14:37.23\00:14:39.29 has been withdrawn from the market. 00:14:39.30\00:14:41.44 Now Vioxx has been known for about 2 years 00:14:41.45\00:14:45.45 to be associated with some problems 00:14:45.46\00:14:48.69 but those problems are being kind 00:14:48.70\00:14:49.86 of kept under wraps. 00:14:49.87\00:14:51.35 Eventually when it became obvious 00:14:51.36\00:14:53.84 to the manufacture that become concern 00:14:53.85\00:14:56.33 and so Merck then withdraws it's product. 00:14:56.34\00:14:58.57 Celebrex at the present time is under scrutiny 00:14:58.58\00:15:01.40 because it belongs to same family 00:15:01.41\00:15:02.98 of Cox-2 inhibitors that the Vioxx does. 00:15:02.99\00:15:08.04 Is there any mechanism or any requirement 00:15:08.05\00:15:11.97 that side effects, adverse reactions people 00:15:11.98\00:15:17.05 that maybe die or if there is some 00:15:17.06\00:15:20.41 type of problem that is recurring with 00:15:20.42\00:15:24.15 a given product? Is there some requirement that, 00:15:24.16\00:15:26.95 that be reported to an agency that control? 00:15:26.96\00:15:31.62 No, and now we have a recent on the other side 00:15:31.63\00:15:35.10 of the coin here we have Ephedra which 00:15:35.11\00:15:37.91 is the dietary supplement that suppose you know 00:15:37.92\00:15:40.11 have some abstracts. Stimulatory effect and even 00:15:40.12\00:15:43.95 after they recommended that would be pulled off 00:15:43.96\00:15:46.33 the market it was still available. 00:15:46.34\00:15:47.47 But the difference between a 00:15:47.48\00:15:49.96 supplementary drug enlisting my experience 00:15:49.97\00:15:52.90 now that under, that those drugs 00:15:52.91\00:15:55.72 underwent a lot of study. 00:15:55.73\00:15:57.31 Now maybe not enough study because 00:15:57.32\00:16:00.46 the FDA has been force to bring these 00:16:00.47\00:16:03.20 new drugs, pain killers 00:16:03.21\00:16:04.57 and all kinds of drug out in the market, 00:16:04.58\00:16:06.30 maybe before the time but remember 00:16:06.31\00:16:09.18 this supplement industry is suppose 00:16:09.19\00:16:11.45 to have research to back up their claims 00:16:11.46\00:16:13.38 or back up why they are selling, 00:16:13.39\00:16:14.78 why people are buying them but sell them 00:16:14.79\00:16:17.34 are they require to all the person can do 00:16:17.35\00:16:20.08 if they have complaints is reported to their 00:16:20.09\00:16:21.99 medical caretaker and that care taker 00:16:22.00\00:16:24.79 will call the FDA and if they have enough 00:16:24.80\00:16:27.16 complaints then the FDA may turn around 00:16:27.17\00:16:30.06 and say alright you must, 00:16:30.07\00:16:31.96 let me see your result, 00:16:31.97\00:16:33.10 let me see your research to prove that 00:16:33.11\00:16:35.52 this is the weight control object 00:16:35.53\00:16:37.41 or it just stamina or it helps you sleep 00:16:37.42\00:16:39.57 or whatever. But the requirements 00:16:39.58\00:16:42.65 are very loose and the reason is 00:16:42.66\00:16:46.19 and it's a same way I am trying to say 00:16:46.20\00:16:48.92 but the supplement companies as well as 00:16:48.93\00:16:51.82 drug companies both have powerful lobbies 00:16:51.83\00:16:55.13 that influence the senators 00:16:55.14\00:16:57.76 that make the law. Now I am interested 00:16:57.77\00:16:59.91 that you talk about the food supplement 00:16:59.92\00:17:01.72 companies and you talk about the drug companies 00:17:01.73\00:17:04.56 as though they are two separate entities 00:17:04.57\00:17:06.79 but it's well known is that the manufactures 00:17:06.80\00:17:10.31 of many of the supplements 00:17:10.32\00:17:11.87 are the same companies that are manufacturing 00:17:11.88\00:17:14.35 regular pharmaceutical which we are call 00:17:14.36\00:17:16.26 them drugs. 00:17:16.27\00:17:17.24 And some of the drugs are herbs, 00:17:17.25\00:17:19.29 are natural products of the earth. 00:17:19.30\00:17:21.20 And, but those companies have two sets 00:17:21.21\00:17:23.49 of rules they sort of almost schizophrenic 00:17:23.50\00:17:26.43 there or have a split personality. 00:17:26.44\00:17:29.23 When they complain with FDA regulations 00:17:29.24\00:17:32.65 and on the other side they are getting away 00:17:32.66\00:17:34.92 with doing things that they don't require 00:17:34.93\00:17:36.36 all the research, all the money that 00:17:36.37\00:17:38.18 goes into development of the product, 00:17:38.19\00:17:40.39 and yet that the same companies, 00:17:40.40\00:17:41.93 so really what seem to me that there isn't a 00:17:41.94\00:17:44.74 great deal of moral difference between 00:17:44.75\00:17:48.35 a drug producer and the supplement producer 00:17:48.36\00:17:50.75 in many of this situation would you agree 00:17:50.76\00:17:52.72 with that or do have their. Yeah, 00:17:52.73\00:17:54.12 I think morally that would be right 00:17:54.13\00:17:55.84 but I think the drug companies halved 00:17:55.85\00:17:57.88 that DFD has more power to enforce 00:17:57.89\00:18:00.91 the law of the research and so on to prove that 00:18:00.92\00:18:05.05 they have more merit than placebo 00:18:05.06\00:18:08.25 for instance. Now you know 00:18:08.26\00:18:09.93 we've talked about then 00:18:09.94\00:18:11.28 what we are saying here is that the policy 00:18:11.29\00:18:14.23 or the policing of the validity of this agent 00:18:14.24\00:18:18.93 is the responsibility of the manufacturer. 00:18:18.94\00:18:21.11 Now I don't know of any industry 00:18:21.12\00:18:24.05 I mean we have gone through 00:18:24.06\00:18:25.03 turmoil in the last 4, 5 years is industry 00:18:25.04\00:18:28.77 has been seen not to be able to control 00:18:28.78\00:18:31.95 regulate it self. That's right. 00:18:31.96\00:18:33.32 And yet here we are having 00:18:33.33\00:18:36.09 a product that are, people are taking them 00:18:36.10\00:18:38.64 and we are expecting those companies 00:18:38.65\00:18:41.05 that manufacture them to actually be monitoring 00:18:41.06\00:18:44.65 and regulating themselves. 00:18:44.66\00:18:46.23 What advice would you give to a consumer 00:18:46.24\00:18:49.91 as to how that consumer can look at the claims 00:18:49.92\00:18:55.92 that are made of certain products 00:18:55.93\00:18:56.94 and ascertain for themselves as whether 00:18:56.95\00:18:59.38 a product has value or not because 00:18:59.39\00:19:01.21 there maybe very good products out there. 00:19:01.22\00:19:03.03 Well, many of the food supplements 00:19:03.04\00:19:05.30 are good products. Many of these things 00:19:05.31\00:19:08.61 are helpful you know vitamins are certainly 00:19:08.62\00:19:11.19 helpful and some of the, 00:19:11.20\00:19:13.02 some of the herbs have some problems 00:19:13.03\00:19:15.56 and may be we will have just a few minutes 00:19:15.57\00:19:17.29 to all go over maybe some of those herbs 00:19:17.30\00:19:20.02 have some scientific basis 00:19:20.03\00:19:21.64 for their efficacy. But really 00:19:21.65\00:19:24.68 the consumer is in dilemma. 00:19:24.69\00:19:26.36 I personally would, would use the internet, 00:19:26.37\00:19:29.24 I would go to a national database 00:19:29.25\00:19:32.56 like the National Library of Medicine 00:19:32.57\00:19:35.32 and check in there public PubMed. 00:19:35.33\00:19:38.78 PubMed is something you just type into your, 00:19:38.79\00:19:41.24 to search engine and you will get 00:19:41.25\00:19:44.56 all and then once you get into PubMed 00:19:44.57\00:19:47.32 then they will ask you for your topic 00:19:47.33\00:19:49.28 so you put valerian, sauce pepper asternia 00:19:49.29\00:19:51.87 or whatever you want put in there 00:19:51.88\00:19:53.51 and then they will give you all the studies 00:19:53.52\00:19:55.56 that have been done scientific studies 00:19:55.57\00:19:57.15 pre-reviewed that have been in there. 00:19:57.16\00:19:58.67 Now some of things I think here we have 00:19:58.68\00:20:01.62 got some experience you try this on a product. 00:20:01.63\00:20:03.54 Just last week, just last week, 00:20:03.55\00:20:05.66 I decided that I wanted to look up 00:20:05.67\00:20:08.24 glyconutrients. Now glyconutrients 00:20:08.25\00:20:10.97 are a newer product that is being promoted by a 00:20:10.98\00:20:15.35 certain company I am not going to mention 00:20:15.36\00:20:17.14 the name of the company nor the product. 00:20:17.15\00:20:18.82 But I thought well, the claims are that 00:20:18.83\00:20:21.64 there is an enormous amount of body 00:20:21.65\00:20:24.11 of research to support this so I thought well, 00:20:24.12\00:20:26.59 I would like to read that research 00:20:26.60\00:20:28.33 because I have actually 00:20:28.34\00:20:29.82 I have a niece who said to me 00:20:29.83\00:20:31.60 what do you think of this product 00:20:31.61\00:20:33.11 and I said, well, 00:20:33.12\00:20:34.13 I don't know much about it. 00:20:34.14\00:20:35.30 And she said that, 00:20:35.31\00:20:36.28 have you read the research? 00:20:36.29\00:20:37.26 And you know it was important for me 00:20:37.27\00:20:38.95 to read the research so I went to PubMed 00:20:38.96\00:20:41.53 and I got two articles, two articles. 00:20:41.54\00:20:45.89 One was the effective glyconutrients 00:20:45.90\00:20:47.89 on white blood cells in a test tube, 00:20:47.90\00:20:50.66 not in the body, not in the overall, 00:20:50.67\00:20:52.81 not in humans, not in humans, 00:20:52.82\00:20:53.79 not in even in rats but it was in the test tube 00:20:53.80\00:20:56.49 so I looked this. The other one was 00:20:56.50\00:20:58.94 someone along the same lines. 00:20:58.95\00:21:00.94 isolated singularity I thought well, 00:21:00.95\00:21:02.89 surely this is not capable of giving me 00:21:02.90\00:21:07.42 all the research so I went to some journals, 00:21:07.43\00:21:09.58 I went to the New England Journal of Medicine 00:21:09.59\00:21:11.92 which is one of the premier journals, 00:21:11.93\00:21:14.08 nothing it said you have found zero comment. 00:21:14.09\00:21:18.00 So then I thought alright well, 00:21:18.01\00:21:19.22 I better go to a nutrient journal 00:21:19.23\00:21:20.65 I went to the general nutrition, 00:21:20.66\00:21:21.88 zero results I thought maybe 00:21:21.89\00:21:24.07 this is animal physiology 00:21:24.08\00:21:26.53 so I went to animal physiology, 00:21:26.54\00:21:28.24 cellular physiology, zero written, 00:21:28.25\00:21:30.52 I thought maybe it's plant physiology 00:21:30.53\00:21:32.22 so I went to a plant physiology journal, 00:21:32.23\00:21:33.83 zero written. I went then, 00:21:33.84\00:21:36.09 instead of that I thought well, 00:21:36.10\00:21:37.79 maybe it's influencing stem cell 00:21:37.80\00:21:39.60 they have talked about how it may 00:21:39.61\00:21:40.99 empowers stem cell. 00:21:41.00\00:21:42.02 I went to the journal stem cell research, 00:21:42.03\00:21:44.19 zero written so in other words, 00:21:44.20\00:21:47.01 you are saying go to PubMed 00:21:47.02\00:21:48.22 I find these two isolated articles 00:21:48.23\00:21:50.20 but the people who are promoting this, 00:21:50.21\00:21:51.73 telling me that's a mountain that should 00:21:51.74\00:21:54.17 tell you something. 00:21:54.18\00:21:55.18 In fact, the same product now I am aware 00:21:55.19\00:21:57.38 what product it says I call the company 00:21:57.39\00:22:02.07 and I says you know, you say you have 00:22:02.08\00:22:03.80 scientific research to back up your claims 00:22:03.81\00:22:05.92 I would like some of them I have received 00:22:05.93\00:22:08.13 a stake of literature a half inch thick. 00:22:08.14\00:22:09.90 I read through there and these consensuses 00:22:09.91\00:22:13.03 of scientists agree, scientists agree 00:22:13.04\00:22:15.68 but I found no report in a science, 00:22:15.69\00:22:20.91 Reputable Scientific Journals. 00:22:20.92\00:22:22.41 In the literature they sent me 00:22:22.42\00:22:24.41 so I think this is one thing we can do 00:22:24.42\00:22:26.62 but at least that's why we've got to do, 00:22:26.63\00:22:28.66 we've got try out, 00:22:28.67\00:22:29.64 try to find out what the active ingredient is, 00:22:29.65\00:22:31.50 find out what the health claim and find out 00:22:31.51\00:22:33.67 from a reputable source like PubMed. 00:22:33.68\00:22:36.06 If there is any research to back it up. 00:22:36.07\00:22:38.07 So self-praise is no recommendation. 00:22:38.08\00:22:42.10 And testimonial, testimonies are something 00:22:42.11\00:22:44.99 that are use very often to promote 00:22:45.00\00:22:47.23 a product, you know, 00:22:47.24\00:22:48.22 and they gets some big names like you know 00:22:48.23\00:22:50.75 big scientist or some famous doctor 00:22:50.76\00:22:52.93 or some one like that. 00:22:52.94\00:22:54.34 But really if it's not their field 00:22:54.35\00:22:56.47 of study and labor, and study and interest 00:22:56.48\00:22:59.63 it really means nothing and one person you know 00:22:59.64\00:23:04.63 seeming to benefit from a product, 00:23:04.64\00:23:07.19 it doesn't mean that is going to help 00:23:07.20\00:23:09.86 the next person. You need a larger group 00:23:09.87\00:23:12.43 of people so that's another thing 00:23:12.44\00:23:14.05 you want to see, if you want to see 00:23:14.06\00:23:16.36 if this is done on a large number of people 00:23:16.37\00:23:18.38 and reported more than one in repeated 00:23:18.39\00:23:21.00 and verified more than one, 00:23:21.01\00:23:23.16 more than one study. 00:23:23.17\00:23:24.14 Its like line is pulling came out 00:23:24.15\00:23:26.10 with the mega dose of vitamin C 00:23:26.11\00:23:28.00 for everything it ails you and for a while 00:23:28.01\00:23:30.97 there people were taking these grossly 00:23:30.98\00:23:34.18 exaggerated doses of vitamin C, 00:23:34.19\00:23:36.35 not the vitamin C is a bad thing. 00:23:36.36\00:23:38.05 Would you say Stoy that there is room 00:23:38.06\00:23:40.21 for taking a regular supplement of any kind? 00:23:40.22\00:23:42.58 I would if some reason you are traveling 00:23:42.59\00:23:46.14 overseas like I know that you do, 00:23:46.15\00:23:47.97 I would take a regular supplement 00:23:47.98\00:23:50.26 not a mega dose of any other vitamins 00:23:50.27\00:23:52.89 or minerals but a regular supplement 00:23:52.90\00:23:54.36 because you can't always eat the type of food 00:23:54.37\00:23:56.87 you want and you can always eat 00:23:56.88\00:23:58.22 when you want it so maybe in some cases, 00:23:58.23\00:24:00.71 maybe a case where a child won't eat, 00:24:00.72\00:24:03.94 you can't get him to eat, 00:24:03.95\00:24:04.92 you might want to get him a supplement, 00:24:04.93\00:24:05.99 maybe during pregnancy, 00:24:06.00\00:24:07.42 the woman would take a supplement, 00:24:07.43\00:24:09.67 maybe if they are older folks 00:24:09.68\00:24:12.65 they are not assimilating their vitamin B12 00:24:12.66\00:24:15.26 even though they are taking vitamin B12 00:24:15.27\00:24:18.03 supplement are source of food well I say, 00:24:18.04\00:24:20.81 they may want to take some. 00:24:20.82\00:24:22.07 So there is a exceptional cases 00:24:22.08\00:24:23.95 but I think for the most part we should get 00:24:23.96\00:24:26.06 our vitamins and our minerals, 00:24:26.07\00:24:27.87 our protein, our carbohydrates and foods. 00:24:27.88\00:24:31.49 In fact, if you spend the money, 00:24:31.50\00:24:33.34 at this particular product 00:24:33.35\00:24:34.32 we are looking at it was a hundred 00:24:34.33\00:24:35.73 and some dollar for one 00:24:35.74\00:24:36.91 bottle of that or bottle of this $160 00:24:36.92\00:24:39.58 for that I mean if you took say the $60 00:24:39.59\00:24:43.56 that you are spending on this food supplements 00:24:43.57\00:24:46.37 and you put it into saying yes, 00:24:46.38\00:24:48.44 I think we will buy the blueberries 00:24:48.45\00:24:50.24 even though they are expensive, yes, 00:24:50.25\00:24:51.71 let's get the raspberries even though 00:24:51.72\00:24:53.92 they are little bit more expensive 00:24:53.93\00:24:55.61 then we could afford and I think that people 00:24:55.62\00:24:57.75 who spent maybe $15 or $20 a week more on their 00:24:57.76\00:25:02.46 grocery bill would probably 00:25:02.47\00:25:04.26 get a much healthier approach unnecessarily 00:25:04.27\00:25:07.14 looking for. Another problem 00:25:07.15\00:25:09.55 we have Allan is that, 00:25:09.56\00:25:11.10 that since there has not been a lot of research 00:25:11.11\00:25:14.41 done on this supplements we don't know 00:25:14.42\00:25:16.71 what the interaction is with other supplements, 00:25:16.72\00:25:19.58 the interaction is with other drugs, 00:25:19.59\00:25:22.35 the interaction is with other foods. 00:25:22.36\00:25:25.06 Well, of course. We don't know 00:25:25.07\00:25:26.04 what those are, we know some 00:25:26.05\00:25:27.70 of those interactions are problem 00:25:27.71\00:25:29.36 like grape fruit food use. Yeah. 00:25:29.37\00:25:31.41 It should leave and cholesterol 00:25:31.42\00:25:34.09 lowering medication, that's right, 00:25:34.10\00:25:35.22 and there are some other interaction. 00:25:35.23\00:25:37.18 But even worse for surgery, 00:25:37.19\00:25:38.17 when I was doing surgery I used to be very, 00:25:38.18\00:25:40.71 very concern that I had a complete list 00:25:40.72\00:25:42.91 of everything that patient was taking 00:25:42.92\00:25:44.19 because it's dreadful to get in there, 00:25:44.20\00:25:46.66 cut open the patient's abdomen say 00:25:46.67\00:25:49.30 we are operating in the pelvis and you got this 00:25:49.31\00:25:50.98 constant oozes and you're saying 00:25:50.99\00:25:52.98 how do you stop this oozing only to find out 00:25:52.99\00:25:56.03 later that although when you got to be 00:25:56.04\00:25:58.20 on a medication they said, 00:25:58.21\00:25:59.26 no, they have been taking some product, 00:25:59.27\00:26:02.76 that increase blood circulation. 00:26:02.77\00:26:04.77 Now we have a couple of minutes left 00:26:04.78\00:26:06.25 here Stoy that. Are there are 00:26:06.26\00:26:07.23 some good point? There are some good points? 00:26:07.24\00:26:08.55 We need to talk about them, 00:26:08.56\00:26:09.53 why don't we talk about it, okay, 00:26:09.54\00:26:10.51 I mean I think that there is for instance 00:26:10.52\00:26:12.64 we've mentioned in another program about 00:26:12.65\00:26:14.98 Supramental for people have 00:26:14.99\00:26:16.95 prostatic hypertrophy. 00:26:16.96\00:26:18.16 I think that there is a fair amount of 00:26:18.17\00:26:19.91 evidence that that's a useful herb. 00:26:19.92\00:26:21.72 I think cranberry juice is very good, 00:26:21.73\00:26:24.98 not as a treatment but as a preventative 00:26:24.99\00:26:29.89 against urinary tract infections. 00:26:29.90\00:26:32.01 Many of mild women who would have 00:26:32.02\00:26:33.65 repeated urinary tract infections, 00:26:33.66\00:26:35.07 I would encourage them to take cranberry juice 00:26:35.08\00:26:37.83 because I think there is a body of evidence 00:26:37.84\00:26:40.25 that shows the cranberry juice is fairly successful. 00:26:40.26\00:26:42.93 And Garlic is one of those supplements 00:26:42.94\00:26:44.67 now that they have concentrated but garlic 00:26:44.68\00:26:46.88 in a regular part you know when you are 00:26:46.89\00:26:48.59 cooking yourself is one thing but the 00:26:48.60\00:26:51.19 Cleveland Clinic, cancer clinic is saying 00:26:51.20\00:26:53.56 you shouldn't be taking garlic 00:26:53.57\00:26:54.90 if you are talking certain 00:26:54.91\00:26:56.14 other medication for cancer 00:26:56.15\00:26:57.38 and so there is some contraindication 00:26:57.39\00:26:59.95 to some of these supplements 00:26:59.96\00:27:01.52 where is in the food itself probably 00:27:01.53\00:27:04.56 since it's not any one ingredient 00:27:04.57\00:27:06.92 is concentrated. It's not gonna 00:27:06.93\00:27:09.22 give you problem. I think there are some 00:27:09.23\00:27:11.45 others besides sarsaparilla. 00:27:11.46\00:27:12.90 Ginger is good at one. 00:27:12.91\00:27:14.01 Ginger! Well the pregnant women 00:27:14.02\00:27:15.53 should not take ginger, that's right, 00:27:15.54\00:27:16.98 you know there is a need to approach 00:27:16.99\00:27:19.75 this subject in a very definitive way, 00:27:19.76\00:27:23.42 in a way that. Saint John's Wort, 00:27:23.43\00:27:25.94 St. John's Wort again ST. John's Wort 00:27:25.95\00:27:29.05 has been tested in many different situations. 00:27:29.06\00:27:31.41 It doesn't work for everybody. 00:27:31.42\00:27:33.27 It might work for some. 00:27:33.28\00:27:34.39 It might work for some. 00:27:34.40\00:27:35.37 Now do we have time 00:27:35.38\00:27:37.45 to discuss some of the things? 00:27:37.46\00:27:39.04 that have been shown to be a real problem. 00:27:39.05\00:27:41.47 We really don't. We don't. 00:27:41.48\00:27:42.70 We really don't have time but 00:27:42.71\00:27:43.68 what we do have time to do is to say 00:27:43.69\00:27:46.20 to our viewers that they should be 00:27:46.21\00:27:48.55 aware of what it is they are taking. 00:27:48.56\00:27:50.80 Stoy, I would like to thank you today 00:27:50.81\00:27:53.12 for being with us. My pleasure! 00:27:53.13\00:27:54.98 This is being interesting discussion. 00:27:54.99\00:27:56.88 And to our viewers I think that you may 00:27:56.89\00:27:59.93 have heard enough not to praise a particular 00:27:59.94\00:28:03.08 supplement nor to negate a particular supplement 00:28:03.09\00:28:06.59 but to realize that you need to be aware. 00:28:06.60\00:28:08.92 It's our sincere desire that you should 00:28:08.93\00:28:11.40 be aware and being good health. So enjoy. 00:28:11.41\00:28:15.63
