The following program presents principles 00:00:01.98\00:00:02.95 designed to promote good health and is not 00:00:02.96\00:00:04.95 intended to take the place of personalized 00:00:04.98\00:00:06.93 professional care. The opinions and ideas 00:00:06.96\00:00:09.81 expressed are those of the speaker. 00:00:09.84\00:00:11.59 Viewers are encouraged to draw their own 00:00:11.62\00:00:13.91 conclusions about the information presented. 00:00:13.94\00:00:16.57 Hello, welcome to "Wonderfully Made." 00:00:36.44\00:00:39.55 My name is Dr. George Guthrie, 00:00:39.58\00:00:41.77 Medical Director of Lifestyle Center for America. 00:00:41.80\00:00:44.65 The scripture says the joy of the Lord is my strength. 00:00:46.01\00:00:51.43 Here to talk about it today with me is Dr. Tim Arnott. 00:00:52.36\00:00:55.95 Hi, Tim. Hi, George it's good to be here with you. 00:00:55.98\00:00:59.59 It's good to be here. The joy of the Lord is 00:00:59.62\00:01:03.33 my strength, now I often wondered talk about 00:01:03.36\00:01:07.33 strength, physical strength I can lift, 00:01:07.36\00:01:09.31 I can move things that's strength 00:01:09.34\00:01:11.54 and then the joy of the Lord is my strength 00:01:11.57\00:01:15.05 emotionally when I am under stress I can be, 00:01:15.08\00:01:19.08 the joy of the Lord can give me strength in that area. 00:01:19.11\00:01:23.68 I understand that we are learning from science 00:01:23.71\00:01:27.19 that there are lots of benefits from a 00:01:27.22\00:01:30.42 positive thankful spirit. That's right in fact this 00:01:30.45\00:01:35.64 whole topic that we are dealing with in this 00:01:35.67\00:01:38.31 program might be entitled healing emotions. 00:01:38.34\00:01:41.60 Those emotions that sometimes we don't 00:01:41.63\00:01:46.21 always have in our sphere, but science is telling us 00:01:46.24\00:01:50.35 that if we do have them we will have a lower risk 00:01:50.38\00:01:52.85 of some of the most important diseases that 00:01:52.88\00:01:55.69 we face everyday in this country. 00:01:55.72\00:01:58.64 So those negative emotions like anger 00:01:58.67\00:02:02.12 or kind of stress affect our bodies in a negative 00:02:02.15\00:02:07.01 sort of a way and maintaining a positive 00:02:07.04\00:02:10.01 joyful attitude does bring health. 00:02:10.04\00:02:13.08 That's right, Dr. Jonas and colleagues at the 00:02:13.11\00:02:16.45 National Center for Health Statistics in Atlanta 00:02:16.48\00:02:19.69 actually found that those individuals 00:02:19.72\00:02:22.44 who are the most relaxed and the most 00:02:22.47\00:02:25.75 cheerful actually had the lowest risk of developing 00:02:25.78\00:02:29.56 high blood pressure later on compared to those 00:02:29.59\00:02:32.94 individuals who are most tense and least cheerful. 00:02:32.97\00:02:37.40 Well, I suppose that makes sense because 00:02:37.43\00:02:39.64 the stress hormones themselves tender constrict 00:02:39.67\00:02:42.66 the blood vessels and make the blood pressure go up. 00:02:42.69\00:02:45.57 Absolutely and also it's important to remember 00:02:45.60\00:02:49.03 that high blood pressure is one of the most important 00:02:49.06\00:02:53.56 risk factors for coronary artery disease 00:02:53.59\00:02:56.61 or atherosclerosis, hardening of the arteries 00:02:56.64\00:02:59.59 if you will and so one of the three main causes 00:02:59.62\00:03:04.16 of heart disease is high blood pressure, 00:03:04.19\00:03:07.59 the other is of course. Stroke is also more 00:03:07.62\00:03:11.83 likely people who have high blood pressure. 00:03:11.86\00:03:13.69 Absolutely, so blood pressure is a big important 00:03:13.72\00:03:18.01 risk factor for the number one and three killers of 00:03:18.04\00:03:21.47 Americans and other individuals in Western society. 00:03:21.50\00:03:25.23 I've noticed in my office when people come to 00:03:25.26\00:03:27.03 see me sometimes just my white coat makes 00:03:27.06\00:03:31.40 their blood pressure go up a little bit. 00:03:31.43\00:03:33.18 We have a name for this we call it white coat 00:03:33.21\00:03:35.79 hypertension and maybe that's just been a little 00:03:35.82\00:03:38.29 nervous, from being a little nervous when they 00:03:38.32\00:03:40.82 come to visit me. Absolutely, in fact, 00:03:40.85\00:03:43.62 individuals will discover that their highest blood 00:03:43.65\00:03:47.56 pressure will be when their physician takes 00:03:47.59\00:03:50.93 their blood pressure in the office wearing a 00:03:50.96\00:03:53.94 white coat. These studies have actually been done 00:03:53.97\00:03:56.55 and in fact, the next lowest blood pressure will be 00:03:56.58\00:03:59.74 when the nurse takes your blood pressure in 00:03:59.77\00:04:02.55 the office and the next lowest will be the first 00:04:02.58\00:04:06.50 two weeks that you are taking your blood 00:04:06.53\00:04:09.42 pressure in your home, and after two weeks of 00:04:09.45\00:04:12.73 taking your blood pressure in your home 00:04:12.76\00:04:14.63 you will actually see the lowest possible baseline 00:04:14.66\00:04:20.22 blood pressure for you, so actually home 00:04:20.25\00:04:23.76 blood pressure monitoring is very important and we 00:04:23.79\00:04:28.22 would actually recommend that for those individuals 00:04:28.25\00:04:31.24 who either are at risk of high blood pressure maybe 00:04:31.27\00:04:33.88 carrying some extra weight in the middle area 00:04:33.91\00:04:36.26 or those who already have the diagnosis. 00:04:36.29\00:04:38.79 So when I go to visit or when you go to see the doctor, 00:04:38.82\00:04:41.76 keep a positive thankful attitude for the healing 00:04:41.79\00:04:45.26 that's coming rather than being afraid. 00:04:45.29\00:04:47.45 Is that the take home message here? 00:04:47.48\00:04:49.14 Exactly. Okay. Now other benefits of the healing 00:04:49.17\00:04:53.90 emotions were discovered by Dr. Williams 00:04:53.93\00:04:56.54 and his colleagues at the Center for Disease Control 00:04:56.57\00:05:00.20 and Prevention at Atlanta, and what he found, well, 00:05:00.23\00:05:03.44 what he did was to measure the trait anger 00:05:03.47\00:05:06.08 scores for individuals who are less then 00:05:06.11\00:05:09.15 16 years of age. They have different tests 00:05:09.18\00:05:11.61 they can measure how much trait anger 00:05:11.64\00:05:14.64 you have by how you answer these tests 00:05:14.67\00:05:18.01 and individuals with the lowest trait anger scores 00:05:18.04\00:05:22.41 were actually at 1/3 the risk of a stroke compared 00:05:22.44\00:05:26.99 to those who had the highest trait anger scores. 00:05:27.02\00:05:31.32 I have also heard that strokes are not uncommon 00:05:31.35\00:05:37.07 when someone is in a very angry state that is 00:05:37.10\00:05:40.52 the blood pressure raises up, the stress hormones 00:05:40.55\00:05:44.45 increase and it's more likely, we have a blood 00:05:44.48\00:05:47.05 clot break loose and go to the brain. 00:05:47.08\00:05:49.15 Absolutely, George and in fact, 00:05:49.18\00:05:51.53 it's also associated with the release of the stress 00:05:51.56\00:05:56.14 hormones in a fight or flight situation, 00:05:56.17\00:05:59.54 where the blood is more likely to clot as well 00:05:59.57\00:06:02.94 and most strokes and nearly every heart attack 00:06:02.97\00:06:06.83 is the result of formation of a blood clot. 00:06:06.86\00:06:09.55 But we see here that just having the lowest trait 00:06:09.58\00:06:12.93 anger score can significantly lower the risk of 00:06:12.96\00:06:16.75 stroke, only a 3rd the risk and in fact, 00:06:16.78\00:06:19.96 what they found was that this was the most significant 00:06:19.99\00:06:25.51 risk factor for stroke in individuals 00:06:25.54\00:06:28.24 who are otherwise at lowest risk of blood vessel 00:06:28.27\00:06:33.04 diseases such as heart attacks and strokes. 00:06:33.07\00:06:36.04 So that angry episode, in fact, George I remember 00:06:36.07\00:06:38.76 a patient of mine who recently came into the 00:06:38.79\00:06:42.36 office there at the Lifestyle Center and 00:06:42.39\00:06:45.27 this individual had developed some chest pain 00:06:45.30\00:06:48.83 and they called me emergently out of a lecture 00:06:48.86\00:06:52.31 and I raised up and we did an EKG on this individual, 00:06:52.34\00:06:56.45 electrocardiogram and we looked at his electrical 00:06:56.48\00:07:00.44 impulses through the heart and fortunately 00:07:00.47\00:07:04.66 he apparently was not having a coronary event 00:07:04.69\00:07:08.35 and his chest pain subsided after they gave him a 00:07:08.38\00:07:11.64 little bit of nitroglycerin, but it was interesting as 00:07:11.67\00:07:15.12 I did a further history on this gentleman, 00:07:15.15\00:07:17.60 I discovered that the chest pain began after 00:07:17.63\00:07:21.77 he had an angry phone conversation 00:07:21.80\00:07:24.50 and he was enraged during this conversation 00:07:24.53\00:07:28.39 and then the chest pain began, so this is real this 00:07:28.42\00:07:33.30 happens individuals who are involved in a high 00:07:33.33\00:07:37.10 intensity, negative emotion event can increase their 00:07:37.13\00:07:41.75 risk of some of these events. 00:07:41.78\00:07:43.41 So, there are some choices to be made 00:07:43.44\00:07:45.34 when something happens to one that might make 00:07:45.37\00:07:50.01 the anger rise up inside. It would be better to 00:07:50.04\00:07:53.78 choose to look for something to be thankful 00:07:53.81\00:07:57.11 for rather than to letting the anger rise. 00:07:57.14\00:08:00.16 To think positively rather than to let the negative 00:08:00.19\00:08:04.24 emotion roll over our bodies. We are counseled 00:08:04.27\00:08:07.54 that it is a positive duty to resist those negative 00:08:07.57\00:08:13.11 thoughts and so dismissing negative thoughts can be 00:08:13.14\00:08:17.36 something that can be very, very helpful. 00:08:17.39\00:08:19.88 We will talk about more of the health that can 00:08:19.91\00:08:23.08 come to us at the end of this program. 00:08:23.11\00:08:27.12 We don't want people to get discourage 00:08:27.15\00:08:28.84 and develop a negative emotions by listing to 00:08:28.87\00:08:32.08 all of this information. About negative emotions. 00:08:32.11\00:08:34.61 About negative emotions. Now Dr. Williams and his 00:08:34.64\00:08:37.84 colleagues there at the CDC found some other 00:08:37.87\00:08:40.95 very interesting information, individuals whose anger 00:08:40.98\00:08:44.97 experiences were brief infrequent and of low 00:08:45.00\00:08:49.75 intensity were actually at less than one-half 00:08:49.78\00:08:53.82 the risk of a heart attack or death from coronary 00:08:53.85\00:08:58.33 artery disease compared to the those individuals 00:08:58.36\00:09:01.31 whose anger experiences were intense and frequent, 00:09:01.34\00:09:05.41 and much more vigorous, and so again low anger 00:09:05.44\00:09:12.03 intensity, infrequent anger, very protective for the 00:09:12.06\00:09:16.90 heart and for the brain. So the person who feels 00:09:16.93\00:09:20.71 the anger rising has an opportunity to check it 00:09:20.74\00:09:24.12 before it actually blows up completely, 00:09:24.15\00:09:26.70 and the shorter and the less frequent, 00:09:26.73\00:09:29.23 less chance of problems, so that's good news, 00:09:29.26\00:09:32.28 anything else. Well, I think it's important again 00:09:32.31\00:09:35.34 to summarize what Dr. Williams feels is the basis 00:09:35.37\00:09:40.49 for this connection between anger and heart disease, 00:09:40.52\00:09:44.86 heart attacks and strokes and he believes as George 00:09:44.89\00:09:48.12 mentioned that when you're enraged in those 00:09:48.15\00:09:51.89 you have that anger response the stress 00:09:51.92\00:09:54.73 hormones go up, the blood vessels constrict 00:09:54.76\00:09:58.21 and if there is cholesterol in the artery wall there 00:09:58.24\00:10:01.25 can be fracturing of the wall of the endothelium, 00:10:01.28\00:10:05.51 the lining of the artery and that cholesterol can 00:10:05.54\00:10:08.99 rush out into the blood flow space, 00:10:09.02\00:10:11.61 a clot form and you've got a heart attack 00:10:11.64\00:10:14.05 or very frequently a stroke. 00:10:14.08\00:10:17.48 Well, let's look at some more information about 00:10:17.51\00:10:20.64 how healing emotions can help lower our 00:10:20.67\00:10:25.04 risk of some of these very important diseases. 00:10:25.07\00:10:29.18 For example; Dr. Gillette and his colleagues at 00:10:29.21\00:10:32.54 Duke University Medical Center there in North 00:10:32.57\00:10:36.01 Carolina, found that you could actually decrease 00:10:36.04\00:10:40.87 or I should say in another way increase the amount 00:10:40.90\00:10:43.65 of blood get into the heart if you had the lowest 00:10:43.68\00:10:47.95 tension and the lowest frustration. 00:10:47.98\00:10:51.68 In another words, individuals who already have heart 00:10:51.71\00:10:54.73 disease they were studied and in situations 00:10:54.76\00:10:58.33 where they were at the lowest attention, 00:10:58.36\00:11:00.67 the most relaxed, the least stressed 00:11:00.70\00:11:04.13 they had an greater blood flow to the heart 00:11:04.16\00:11:07.67 muscle compared to those patients with heart disease 00:11:07.70\00:11:10.65 who were stressed, who had more anxiety and 00:11:10.68\00:11:13.98 frustration, and so again the importance of healing 00:11:14.01\00:11:18.12 emotions keeping the stress hormones low, 00:11:18.15\00:11:21.26 so you have maximal blood flow to the heart muscle. 00:11:21.29\00:11:25.17 So, the blood vessels are actually open better, 00:11:25.20\00:11:28.48 the blood flow is better when someone is relax 00:11:28.51\00:11:31.58 and peaceful. Absolutely. Now Dr. Kubsanski and his 00:11:31.61\00:11:36.10 colleagues at the Harvard School of Public Health 00:11:36.13\00:11:39.82 found that those individuals who were worried least 00:11:39.85\00:11:44.24 about world conditions about the economy, 00:11:44.27\00:11:47.87 about the recession. Now you are getting 00:11:47.90\00:11:50.73 pretty close to home. That's right, and about 00:11:50.76\00:11:53.37 the countries future those who are worried least 00:11:53.40\00:11:57.51 about these things they had a 60 percent 00:11:57.54\00:12:00.66 lower risk of developing a non-fatal heart attack. 00:12:00.69\00:12:04.79 That will be a heart attack that you have, 00:12:04.82\00:12:06.88 but don't die from, 60 percent lower risk 00:12:06.91\00:12:10.21 if you are least concerned and worried about the 00:12:10.24\00:12:13.81 economy, about the recession, about the situation, 00:12:13.84\00:12:19.01 the political situation and the world conditions, 00:12:19.04\00:12:22.19 and also these individuals least concerned, 00:12:22.22\00:12:25.84 least worried about the economy, about these 00:12:25.87\00:12:28.75 different issues that facing our country 00:12:28.78\00:12:31.33 they had a 30 percent lower risk of all coronary 00:12:31.36\00:12:36.02 heart disease, in fact, they found that there was 00:12:36.05\00:12:38.71 dose-response the more worried you were about the 00:12:38.74\00:12:42.97 economy about world conditions about the 00:12:43.00\00:12:45.49 future of our planet, the greater the risk of 00:12:45.52\00:12:49.25 a heart attack and coronary artery disease. 00:12:49.28\00:12:53.29 So, understanding and knowing that God cares 00:12:53.32\00:12:57.15 for us and has a plan for our lives they were not 00:12:57.18\00:12:59.77 alone in this world can actually make us healthier. 00:12:59.80\00:13:03.60 We don't have to worry about the world around this 00:13:03.63\00:13:05.98 because we know God in-charge that's a good 00:13:06.01\00:13:08.84 news. Dr. Blumenthal has more good news for us. 00:13:08.87\00:13:13.52 Healing emotions they are important. 00:13:14.79\00:13:17.01 We want to, we want to cherish them. 00:13:17.04\00:13:19.78 We want to ask the creator to share with us to give 00:13:19.81\00:13:23.09 us those healing emotions. Dr. Blumenthal at Duke 00:13:23.12\00:13:27.04 University Medical Center actually studied some 00:13:27.07\00:13:30.14 individuals who had some negative emotions 00:13:30.17\00:13:32.55 they had had a heart attack. They were depressed or 00:13:32.58\00:13:36.28 they had a very little social support. 00:13:36.31\00:13:38.94 They didn't have a strong family surrounding them. 00:13:38.97\00:13:41.72 He wanted to know if these individuals, 00:13:41.75\00:13:45.12 what their risk of another heart attack would be 00:13:45.15\00:13:48.43 and so he studied them. He gave them a questionnaire 00:13:48.46\00:13:50.77 to fill out and he found that those individuals 00:13:50.80\00:13:53.51 who had a heart attack, who were depressed 00:13:53.54\00:13:56.59 or had just a small amount of social support. 00:13:56.62\00:13:59.29 If they were exercising regularly they were 00:13:59.32\00:14:04.07 actually a 30 percent lower risk of having a repeat 00:14:04.10\00:14:08.10 mild cardiac infarction or heart attack. 00:14:08.13\00:14:10.76 And so here we see an antidote against negative 00:14:10.79\00:14:14.48 emotions, exercise, regular physical exercise can 00:14:14.51\00:14:19.06 actually undo some of the negative effects 00:14:19.09\00:14:22.80 of the negative emotions. We may even have a good 00:14:22.83\00:14:26.61 explanation for this. The adrenal gland lets these 00:14:26.64\00:14:31.46 hormones, the stress hormones into the blood, 00:14:31.49\00:14:35.35 adrenaline is one of them and noradrenaline is the 00:14:35.38\00:14:39.22 other. Noradrenaline is the one that comes out 00:14:39.25\00:14:42.28 with emotional stress. It tends to constrict the 00:14:42.31\00:14:46.13 blood vessels in the muscle, driving up the 00:14:46.16\00:14:48.53 blood pressure increasing the risk of heart attack. 00:14:48.56\00:14:51.50 The stress hormone that's released from 00:14:53.01\00:14:55.00 the adrenal glands during physical exercise is 00:14:55.03\00:14:59.09 adrenaline and it opens up the blood vessels 00:14:59.12\00:15:02.77 in the muscles, improving the blood flow and 00:15:02.80\00:15:06.27 apparently here decreasing the risk of a heart attack, 00:15:06.30\00:15:10.00 so that's good news. Now Dr. Kubsanski 00:15:10.03\00:15:14.17 and his colleagues at Harvard University found 00:15:14.20\00:15:17.01 another benefit to healing emotions. 00:15:17.04\00:15:19.90 What they've studied is the effect of optimism. 00:15:19.93\00:15:24.24 They studied men and found that those with 00:15:24.27\00:15:26.48 the most optimistic actually had the best 00:15:26.51\00:15:29.24 lung function, yes, lung function was best in those 00:15:29.27\00:15:33.99 who were optimistic. They also found that these 00:15:34.02\00:15:37.35 men who are optimistic had the slowest decline in 00:15:37.38\00:15:41.06 lung function overtime and so if you want to get 00:15:41.09\00:15:44.76 more oxygen to your body if you want to get more 00:15:44.79\00:15:48.58 oxygen to your frontal lobe and be able to think 00:15:48.61\00:15:50.96 more clearly you can have better lung function 00:15:50.99\00:15:54.33 if you have an optimistic spirit. 00:15:54.36\00:15:57.08 And so this is another benefit of the healing 00:15:57.11\00:16:00.28 emotions. Now my wife tells me that I am the optimist 00:16:00.31\00:16:04.64 and she is the pessimist, I mean the realist. 00:16:04.67\00:16:06.87 Yes. So there may be some benefit just to kind 00:16:06.90\00:16:10.46 of thinking at the positive side of things. 00:16:10.49\00:16:12.62 Absolutely. Good, the thankful side. 00:16:12.65\00:16:14.50 Dr. Maritza and his colleagues at Mayo Clinic 00:16:14.53\00:16:18.78 actually found other benefits to optimism 00:16:18.81\00:16:22.39 and they studied individuals and tested them with a 00:16:22.42\00:16:25.83 test the MMPI tests and found out their optimism, 00:16:25.86\00:16:30.05 pessimism score and what they found is that 00:16:30.08\00:16:33.39 individuals who were the most optimistic had the 00:16:33.42\00:16:36.28 lowest mortality, the lowest risk of dying 00:16:36.31\00:16:39.99 over a 30 year period and so if you want to live 00:16:40.02\00:16:44.53 longer, if you want to have more oxygen 00:16:44.56\00:16:48.13 and be able to think more clearly have lower risk 00:16:48.16\00:16:50.84 of heart attack and stroke and better lung function, 00:16:50.87\00:16:55.46 optimism and healing emotions are very, 00:16:55.49\00:16:59.52 very important. A 30 years living longer with 00:16:59.55\00:17:02.79 optimism that's, there must be some affects on the 00:17:02.82\00:17:06.28 immune system as well, cancer and other things. 00:17:06.31\00:17:08.96 I think it's a no; there is no question about it 00:17:08.99\00:17:14.32 George that when we have negative emotions there 00:17:14.35\00:17:17.46 is a depressant affect on the immune system. 00:17:17.49\00:17:20.60 We will be looking at that in just a few moments. 00:17:20.63\00:17:23.69 In fact, we will be learning about a cell 00:17:23.72\00:17:26.31 that actually fights cancer, it's called the NK-cell, 00:17:26.34\00:17:29.89 the natural killer cell. This cell actually does 00:17:29.92\00:17:33.99 surveillance against cancer in your body. 00:17:34.02\00:17:37.15 It looks at cells and to see if they have had a 00:17:37.18\00:17:41.18 cancerous transformation and if they have it takes 00:17:41.21\00:17:45.50 that cell out, it destroys it, and these cells are 00:17:45.53\00:17:49.16 actually responsive to emotions as we will find 00:17:49.19\00:17:52.92 out in a few moments. Now Dr. Bolli and his 00:17:52.95\00:17:56.76 colleagues at the University of Plymouth in the United 00:17:56.79\00:18:00.14 Kingdom looked at this whole issue of optimism 00:18:00.17\00:18:03.77 and pessimism in individuals going for surgery. 00:18:03.80\00:18:07.20 Patients were going for hernia operations 00:18:07.23\00:18:10.05 and he found that the most patients that were the 00:18:10.08\00:18:12.91 most optimistic actually were able to return to their 00:18:12.94\00:18:17.13 normal activities much more quickly, 00:18:17.16\00:18:20.14 muck earlier than individuals who were pessimistic 00:18:20.17\00:18:23.63 and in fact he found that pessimism strongly 00:18:23.66\00:18:27.74 correlated with delayed return to normal activities 00:18:27.77\00:18:32.22 after a surgery, so even something is simple as 00:18:32.25\00:18:36.01 getting back to work after a major operation 00:18:36.04\00:18:39.23 can be affected by our emotions. 00:18:39.26\00:18:42.93 So, healing itself appears to occur faster 00:18:42.96\00:18:45.76 when we have a positive thankful spirit. 00:18:45.79\00:18:49.05 Dr. Levy and his colleagues at the University of 00:18:49.08\00:18:53.42 Pittsburg Medical Center actually studied breast 00:18:53.45\00:18:57.19 cancer survivors. They found individuals 00:18:57.22\00:19:00.18 who had breast cancer and they followed them 00:19:00.21\00:19:03.69 for a number of years and found that those 00:19:03.72\00:19:06.70 who are the most optimistic were the most likely to 00:19:06.73\00:19:10.62 still be alive four years after their breast cancer 00:19:10.65\00:19:15.65 was initially found and so optimism can actually help 00:19:15.68\00:19:20.25 you even after you've been diagnosed with a 00:19:20.28\00:19:23.58 dreaded illnesses, a serious illness, 00:19:23.61\00:19:26.30 for example; as cancer in this case breast cancer. 00:19:26.33\00:19:29.55 So as always the approach cancer diagnosis from 00:19:29.58\00:19:33.04 a positive, we are gonna link this attitude actually 00:19:33.07\00:19:36.94 are able to live longer to fight the cancer better, 00:19:36.97\00:19:39.69 great. Now the Author Hoffen in his book 00:19:39.72\00:19:44.74 "Mind Body Health" the effects of attitudes, 00:19:44.77\00:19:48.49 emotions, and relationships. He reports a study of 00:19:48.52\00:19:53.03 several oncologists about 649 to be exact and they 00:19:53.06\00:19:59.11 were actually talking about their experience with over 00:19:59.14\00:20:02.65 a 100,000 cancer patients and the thing that they 00:20:02.68\00:20:07.50 cited as the single most important issue 00:20:07.53\00:20:11.95 when it comes to successful treatment 00:20:11.98\00:20:14.18 of a cancer patient is an attitude of hope 00:20:14.21\00:20:17.92 and optimism that's what 650 oncologists cited 00:20:17.95\00:20:24.17 as the most important factor for successful treatment 00:20:24.20\00:20:27.84 of cancer over a 100,000 cancer patients. 00:20:27.87\00:20:31.42 Even more important in the chemotherapy itself 00:20:31.45\00:20:34.26 is the attitude with which people approach. 00:20:34.29\00:20:37.52 Absolutely, Dr. Pert, at the National Institute of 00:20:37.55\00:20:41.90 Mental Health is the one we were eluding too early. 00:20:41.93\00:20:44.93 He discovered that white blood cells, 00:20:44.96\00:20:47.77 monocytes in this case are actually sensitive to 00:20:47.80\00:20:51.93 neuropeptides, neurochemicals 00:20:51.96\00:20:54.61 that are coming out of the limbic system of the brain. 00:20:54.64\00:20:57.94 Now the limbic system is the system of the brain 00:20:57.97\00:21:00.57 that deals with your emotions and so when you have an 00:21:00.60\00:21:04.16 emotion, when you have a positive emotion there are 00:21:04.19\00:21:07.33 chemicals made by the cells of the limbic system 00:21:07.36\00:21:11.27 which then are put into the blood stream and go 00:21:11.30\00:21:15.05 and attach to the white blood cells encouraging 00:21:15.08\00:21:18.95 increasing their ability to do the job of protecting 00:21:18.98\00:21:23.15 us from disease. On the converse, 00:21:23.18\00:21:26.22 if you have negative emotions you have a 00:21:26.25\00:21:28.55 similar production of these chemicals 00:21:28.58\00:21:31.87 and it has a negative or depressive effect on the 00:21:31.90\00:21:35.27 white blood cells or the immune system. 00:21:35.30\00:21:38.33 Reminds me of the Bible text, "A merry heart doeth good 00:21:38.36\00:21:42.36 like an antibiotic." Like an antibiotic, yes, 00:21:42.39\00:21:46.68 like a medicine, and a merry heart that's 00:21:46.71\00:21:50.62 exactly right, you know, the wisest man that ever live 00:21:50.65\00:21:54.58 knew the benefit of healing emotions. 00:21:54.61\00:21:57.24 And you know we can ask, we are told in scripture 00:21:57.27\00:22:01.35 that we have not because we ask not. 00:22:01.38\00:22:04.55 God says ask and it shall be given, 00:22:04.58\00:22:07.27 I am just I would say George that we could probably 00:22:07.30\00:22:10.52 ask our creator to give us a optimistic outlook, 00:22:10.55\00:22:14.68 to give us his positive emotions and I am sure 00:22:14.71\00:22:19.33 that he won't tell us to hold on that request. 00:22:19.36\00:22:24.41 The Bible goes so far to say that we are saved by hope 00:22:24.44\00:22:28.36 and looking forward the positiveness what God is 00:22:28.39\00:22:32.37 doing for us has done for us, saves us, 00:22:32.40\00:22:35.82 sometimes also in scripture saving and healing are 00:22:35.85\00:22:41.12 actually the same word it mean very similar. 00:22:41.15\00:22:43.55 So, the salvation there is healing and hope. 00:22:43.58\00:22:47.29 In fact, we were told in Hebrews that the savior, 00:22:47.32\00:22:51.49 but for the joy that was set before Him 00:22:51.52\00:22:55.60 he was able to endure the cross, despising the shame, 00:22:55.63\00:22:59.85 and so hope is important if you are dealing with 00:22:59.88\00:23:03.29 a difficult situation, a cross experience look at the 00:23:03.32\00:23:08.08 joy that the creator has set before us 00:23:08.11\00:23:11.71 and that can have powerful healing properties for you. 00:23:11.74\00:23:16.58 Dr. Burns and his colleagues at the University of Miami 00:23:16.61\00:23:20.03 was the physician that I've mentioned earlier. 00:23:20.06\00:23:24.11 He studied women and found that those women 00:23:24.14\00:23:27.17 who were the most optimistic had the highest 00:23:27.20\00:23:30.90 natural killer cell activity, in another words women 00:23:30.93\00:23:35.50 who were the most optimistic about their 00:23:35.53\00:23:37.73 lives had nuclear natural killer cells who were able 00:23:37.76\00:23:42.76 to best do their job of looking for cancer cells 00:23:42.79\00:23:46.68 in your body to knock them out and to destroy them 00:23:46.71\00:23:49.26 before they could get a foothold and a cancer 00:23:49.29\00:23:52.12 develop. So, not just those that fight infection, 00:23:52.15\00:23:55.22 but cells that fight cancer directly are encouraged 00:23:55.25\00:23:58.17 by this positive thankful attitude. 00:23:58.20\00:24:01.43 And this wasn't just one study George. 00:24:01.46\00:24:04.05 Other researcher such as Dr. Segerstrom at UCLA 00:24:04.08\00:24:09.65 found similar findings those who are most optimistic 00:24:09.68\00:24:13.94 have the most powerful white blood cell affect, 00:24:13.97\00:24:18.51 at the white blood cell whose job it is to look 00:24:18.54\00:24:21.86 for cancer cells that have had a cancerous 00:24:21.89\00:24:24.80 transformation and to take out those cells to 00:24:24.83\00:24:27.46 destroy those cells. Optimism helps your body 00:24:27.49\00:24:30.61 fight cancer. This is a powerful recommendation 00:24:30.64\00:24:34.79 for the healing emotions. Is there anything else 00:24:34.82\00:24:37.29 that positive emotions does for us? 00:24:37.32\00:24:39.60 Well, yes, there are number of different things, 00:24:39.63\00:24:42.51 in fact, Dr. Seligman and his colleagues at the 00:24:42.54\00:24:45.56 University of Pennsylvania found that those who were 00:24:45.59\00:24:49.04 the most optimistic, those adults who were the most 00:24:49.07\00:24:52.14 optimistic actually had the strongest immune system. 00:24:52.17\00:24:55.74 So, now we are not looking just at the 00:24:55.77\00:24:57.98 natural killer cell that does cancer surveillance, 00:24:58.01\00:25:00.70 but we are looking at all the white blood cells 00:25:00.73\00:25:03.25 and as they studied the immune system, 00:25:03.28\00:25:06.20 they found that individuals who are the most optimistic 00:25:06.23\00:25:10.12 actually had the strongest immune systems, 00:25:10.15\00:25:13.08 they also found George that those who were the 00:25:13.11\00:25:15.62 most pessimistic had the weakest immune system. 00:25:15.65\00:25:20.27 So, it does make a difference the thoughts 00:25:20.30\00:25:23.33 of our mind. It's an interesting field that 00:25:23.36\00:25:25.39 is just blooming now and I think they call 00:25:25.42\00:25:27.77 it psyconeuroimmunology. How the mind affects the 00:25:27.80\00:25:34.61 body's ability to deal with the cancers and infections. 00:25:34.64\00:25:39.90 Now in the time that we have left George, 00:25:39.93\00:25:43.41 we want to deal with this whole issue of well, 00:25:43.44\00:25:47.01 okay, I have a lot of negative emotions, 00:25:47.04\00:25:50.40 I am anxious, I am worried, I am angry a lot, 00:25:50.43\00:25:53.31 I fly off the handle. How can I have these healing 00:25:53.34\00:25:56.85 emotions? How can I be at rest and at peace? 00:25:56.88\00:26:00.57 How can I have low anger level? How can I have more 00:26:00.60\00:26:06.71 comfort and more hope and more optimism? 00:26:06.74\00:26:10.45 How is it possible that we can change from 00:26:10.48\00:26:14.06 having negative emotions to healing emotions? 00:26:14.09\00:26:17.55 Well, we have been given many wonderful 00:26:17.58\00:26:20.98 promises to help us escape these negative emotions. 00:26:21.01\00:26:25.85 Promises of help in time of trouble, 00:26:25.88\00:26:28.78 promises of care when it seems like no one cares, 00:26:28.81\00:26:33.75 if we high those scriptures, 00:26:33.78\00:26:36.04 those promises in our mind, those can come to 00:26:36.07\00:26:39.12 the surface, be brought back to our memory. 00:26:39.15\00:26:41.25 We can choose to say them to ourselves. 00:26:41.28\00:26:44.70 I know for me personally in times of stress has 00:26:44.73\00:26:47.80 been helpful to say the Lord is my shepherd. 00:26:47.83\00:26:50.75 I shall not one. When I am wrestling with it 00:26:50.78\00:26:54.14 that for me is a time of rest. Scriptures help us 00:26:54.17\00:26:58.37 with that.
