The following program presents principles 00:00:01.98\00:00:02.95 designed to promote good health 00:00:02.96\00:00:04.11 and is not intended to take the place of 00:00:04.14\00:00:06.16 personalized professional care. 00:00:06.19\00:00:07.89 The opinions, ideas expressed are those of the speaker. 00:00:08.62\00:00:11.55 Viewers are encouraged to draw their own conclusions 00:00:12.20\00:00:14.44 about the information presented. 00:00:14.47\00:00:16.10 Welcome to Wonderfully Made. 00:00:37.50\00:00:39.79 My name is Dr. George Guthrie, 00:00:39.82\00:00:41.86 I'm the Medical Director at Lifestyle Center of America. 00:00:41.89\00:00:45.06 I would like to discuss with you today about cholesterol. 00:00:45.94\00:00:49.74 Do you really need to take a drug 00:00:49.77\00:00:51.54 in order to lower your cholesterol? 00:00:51.57\00:00:54.37 With me to join in this discussion is Dr. Tim Arnott. 00:00:54.77\00:00:58.68 Thank you George, it's good to be with you again. 00:00:59.36\00:01:02.36 Well, Tim we are looking at cholesterol. 00:01:03.68\00:01:07.87 What is cholesterol? Well George, 00:01:09.00\00:01:11.44 its something very, very important in fact 00:01:11.47\00:01:14.87 if you don't have cholesterol in your body and 00:01:14.90\00:01:17.83 you're a lady you won't be able to make Progesterone 00:01:17.86\00:01:21.43 and of course if you don't have Progesterone you won't 00:01:21.46\00:01:24.18 be able to have children. In fact George reality 00:01:24.21\00:01:28.04 is that none of us would be here if wasn't for cholesterol 00:01:28.07\00:01:31.03 and we wouldn't be able to have men and women, 00:01:31.06\00:01:34.20 because of testosterone and estrogen are made 00:01:34.23\00:01:37.43 from cholesterol Cholesterol is an important part 00:01:37.46\00:01:40.52 of every cell in the body, in fact the membrane 00:01:40.55\00:01:45.65 or the valve that lines the cell that actually encloses 00:01:45.68\00:01:50.56 the cell has cholesterol in it and it actually has a very 00:01:50.59\00:01:54.36 important role at making sure that, that membrane 00:01:54.39\00:01:58.12 operates efficiently and has the full function that 00:01:58.15\00:02:02.32 it needs. So, cholesterol is important. 00:02:02.35\00:02:03.94 Well, here I thought cholesterol was bad. 00:02:04.16\00:02:06.50 Where did we get the idea that if cholesterol is so 00:02:06.53\00:02:09.13 good, where did we get the idea so, that it's bad? 00:02:09.16\00:02:11.65 Well it turns out George that when cholesterol 00:02:12.38\00:02:15.93 is damaged chemically by something called a free 00:02:15.96\00:02:20.12 radical which is simply a form of oxygen in the body 00:02:20.15\00:02:24.26 that's a toxic form and a dangerous form of oxygen. 00:02:24.29\00:02:28.34 When the cholesterol is damaged by that oxygen 00:02:28.80\00:02:31.91 it becomes oxidized. It becomes chemically injured, 00:02:31.94\00:02:36.04 becomes bruised if you will and then the white blood 00:02:36.07\00:02:39.91 cells sweep over and pick up that damaged cholesterol 00:02:39.94\00:02:43.80 and they quickly take it out of the blood and put it 00:02:43.83\00:02:47.61 into the nearest dump side and that just happens 00:02:47.64\00:02:50.79 to the valve of the coronary artery and so overtime 00:02:50.82\00:02:55.05 if you have high blood cholesterol and it becomes 00:02:55.08\00:02:59.04 chemically injured in this way. You can actually fill up 00:02:59.07\00:03:02.42 the valve of the artery full of this cholesterol 00:03:02.45\00:03:05.48 and that cholesterol is unstable and especially 00:03:05.51\00:03:09.51 if you have a lot of inflammation in the blood that 00:03:09.54\00:03:12.25 cholesterol can actually rupture out into the flowing 00:03:12.28\00:03:16.18 blood causing the blood clot to form and that can be 00:03:16.21\00:03:19.30 a heart attack or a stroke. 00:03:19.33\00:03:21.21 So, this is pretty serious business then? Absolutely 00:03:21.24\00:03:24.77 Doctors are now seemed to focus on the cholesterol 00:03:24.99\00:03:28.03 and they want to get the cholesterol down, 00:03:28.06\00:03:30.83 so we can decrease the risk of heart attack and strokes 00:03:30.86\00:03:33.63 and those types of things. There is a lot that we hear 00:03:33.66\00:03:38.13 in the advertisements and magazines and TV about 00:03:38.83\00:03:44.28 drugs to help lower cholesterol. 00:03:45.35\00:03:47.18 How do those drugs work and are they really 00:03:47.82\00:03:50.40 beneficial for us? Well, those drugs are a number 00:03:50.43\00:03:55.11 of different types, but the most popular type is called 00:03:55.14\00:03:58.19 a Statin. And these drugs actually interfere with the 00:03:58.22\00:04:03.35 enzyme that the body uses to make cholesterol and 00:04:03.38\00:04:08.75 so they are actually quite effective at lowering 00:04:08.78\00:04:12.42 the total cholesterol and they can lower the total 00:04:12.45\00:04:15.44 cholesterol anywhere from 25 to 30 percent and 00:04:15.47\00:04:19.93 these drugs are been shown to lower the risk of developing 00:04:19.96\00:04:23.56 a heart attack for example about the same about 25 00:04:23.59\00:04:26.87 to 30 percent, but what we wanna talk about on 00:04:26.90\00:04:30.33 this program is what is the underline cause of that 00:04:30.36\00:04:35.81 elevated cholesterol. What's the underline cause of 00:04:35.84\00:04:38.67 damaged cholesterol and what if anything 00:04:38.70\00:04:42.28 can we do about it? Yes, at Lifestyle Center 00:04:42.31\00:04:45.86 of America we have focused on treating the cause 00:04:45.89\00:04:49.43 of the disease rather than just the symptoms and I 00:04:49.46\00:04:52.99 suppose we could aim at just lowering the cholesterol, 00:04:53.02\00:04:55.97 but wouldn't it make more sense to focus on 00:04:56.00\00:04:59.00 decreasing or changing those things that made the 00:04:59.03\00:05:02.14 cholesterol go up. What can we do to help lower our 00:05:02.17\00:05:05.40 cholesterol or may be I should say to help us understand it? 00:05:05.43\00:05:08.08 What did we do to make our cholesterol go up in 00:05:08.11\00:05:10.75 the first place? Well, one of the things George 00:05:10.78\00:05:14.04 that we do without realizing it we are involved 00:05:14.07\00:05:18.33 in a society where we are quite sedentary. 00:05:18.36\00:05:21.64 No exercise? No exercise, where we are sitting like 00:05:22.27\00:05:24.76 you and I are sitting here we gonna get some exercise 00:05:24.79\00:05:28.28 after this. We are also eating foods that are very 00:05:28.31\00:05:32.55 calorie dense. They are not 80 percent water like 00:05:32.58\00:05:36.60 the beans, whole grains, the fruits and vegetables 00:05:36.63\00:05:39.57 that's cook beans and cook whole gains of course, 00:05:39.60\00:05:41.81 but these foods are, they were eating a very dense 00:05:41.84\00:05:44.74 in calories, it's not lot of water or fiber in them and 00:05:44.77\00:05:48.59 so its very easy overtimes for over wait to creep 00:05:48.62\00:05:51.89 upward and what some people may not know is that 00:05:51.92\00:05:55.49 if your weight creeps up your body becomes more 00:05:55.52\00:05:58.69 resistant to insulin and so your pancreas has to make 00:05:58.72\00:06:02.31 more insulin to actually overcome the insulin 00:06:02.34\00:06:06.74 resistance and so your insulin blood levels go up 00:06:06.77\00:06:10.21 and what its important to realize is that insulin 00:06:10.24\00:06:14.09 actually stimulates the enzyme that the body uses 00:06:14.12\00:06:18.26 to make cholesterol. So, as your insulin level goes up, 00:06:18.29\00:06:21.35 so does your cholesterol level go up. 00:06:21.38\00:06:24.42 So, body weight is something that's very important. 00:06:24.85\00:06:28.39 You know as I have tried it to explain this to people 00:06:28.99\00:06:31.49 in the past one of the things, I have, I have looked 00:06:31.52\00:06:33.84 at is cholesterol as a soap. You know cholesterol 00:06:33.87\00:06:37.55 is part of what unable the body to move oil, 00:06:37.58\00:06:41.90 fat and greace around in a water system not only 00:06:41.93\00:06:46.64 are the beans 80 percent water, but we are pretty close 00:06:46.67\00:06:49.15 to that as well, where in the 60 to 70 percent range 00:06:49.18\00:06:52.05 and so in water systems oil and fat don't move around 00:06:52.08\00:06:55.70 and the body has to make this extra cholesterol to in 00:06:55.73\00:06:59.64 order or soap, detergent in order to move the fats 00:06:59.67\00:07:03.34 surrounded the body. So, high fat diet has something 00:07:03.37\00:07:06.00 to do it as well especially a fat called saturated fat. 00:07:06.03\00:07:08.78 Saturated fat or some people call it animal fat. 00:07:08.81\00:07:14.78 These are fats that are, are actually solid at room 00:07:14.81\00:07:19.00 temperature in fact these are fats were, 00:07:19.03\00:07:21.69 were designed to be in organisms that have a body 00:07:21.72\00:07:25.80 temperature of in the 90s, 98.6 these are important fats, 00:07:25.83\00:07:31.32 because if you are going to have a fat be fluid 00:07:32.02\00:07:35.16 in this kind of a creature you need a fat that has more 00:07:35.19\00:07:38.60 solidity to it and, but when you put these fats in 00:07:38.63\00:07:41.88 the diet they actually raise the blood cholesterol in 00:07:41.91\00:07:46.70 fact saturated fat such you would find in butter 00:07:46.73\00:07:51.48 or in red meat for example. These fats are two 00:07:51.51\00:07:56.16 or three times more powerful and raising the total 00:07:56.19\00:07:59.45 cholesterol level then if you are to sit down and eat 00:07:59.48\00:08:02.60 cholesterol itself. So, certainly George moving away 00:08:02.63\00:08:07.16 from the saturated fats that are found in the meats 00:08:07.19\00:08:10.86 especially the red meats and also in the dairy products 00:08:10.89\00:08:15.18 especially the full fat dairy products and probably the 00:08:15.21\00:08:19.15 most important source the number one source of 00:08:19.18\00:08:22.12 saturated fat is cheese, especially the higher fat 00:08:22.15\00:08:26.70 cheeses. So, moving away from these sources 00:08:26.73\00:08:30.86 of saturated fat can drop the total cholesterol 00:08:30.89\00:08:34.00 quite significant. And so we get to our 00:08:34.03\00:08:36.16 question we say do I have to take a drug to lower 00:08:36.19\00:08:40.37 my cholesterol or can I change my lifestyle to get our 00:08:40.40\00:08:44.46 focus can we can I actually change what I am doing 00:08:44.49\00:08:48.67 in such a way to lower my cholesterol 00:08:48.70\00:08:51.43 so I don't need to take a drug? 00:08:51.46\00:08:53.71 Well, that's what we want to share on this program we 00:08:53.93\00:08:56.62 wanna share with you some actually results from real 00:08:56.65\00:08:59.31 people who actually did embark on a lifestyle change 00:08:59.34\00:09:03.51 program and some interesting and dramatic changes took 00:09:03.54\00:09:07.58 place in their cholesterol levels. In fact, 00:09:07.61\00:09:10.08 what this individuals did for 19 days they came into a 00:09:10.11\00:09:14.07 inpatient program, they went on a total plant diet 00:09:14.10\00:09:18.22 that means they ate only beans, whole grains, fruits, 00:09:18.25\00:09:23.42 vegetables nuts and seeds, no animal products no dairy 00:09:23.45\00:09:27.75 products and not even fish for 19 day period. 00:09:27.78\00:09:31.01 They engaged in exercise. They were walking, 00:09:31.04\00:09:33.88 they were rowing, they were swimming, 00:09:33.91\00:09:36.27 they went out for walks in the sunshine, 00:09:36.30\00:09:39.01 they were drinking water, even carrying 00:09:39.04\00:09:40.78 their water bottles, so just like you and I are. 00:09:40.81\00:09:43.61 And they were avoiding coffee and, and the caffeine 00:09:43.64\00:09:48.08 and alcohol and tobacco. They were resting and they 00:09:48.11\00:09:52.82 were learning how to spend time with their creator. 00:09:52.85\00:09:55.40 So, they were following the creator's program of 00:09:55.43\00:09:58.47 healing these eight natural doctors if you will and what 00:09:58.50\00:10:02.79 we wanna share in our first light is what took place 00:10:02.82\00:10:06.46 to their cholesterol level a side affect if you will by 00:10:06.49\00:10:10.93 following the creator's program and what we see here 00:10:10.96\00:10:14.21 is that the total cholesterol level dropped 00:10:14.24\00:10:18.16 significantly in those who are using a Statin. 00:10:18.19\00:10:22.13 Now, as you can it dropped George about 31 points 00:10:22.16\00:10:26.58 the total cholesterol in those taking a Statin, 00:10:26.61\00:10:29.31 by the way George what is a Statin? What, 00:10:29.34\00:10:32.49 what exactly if, if somebody was on one and how 00:10:32.52\00:10:36.12 would they know? I mean what? 00:10:36.15\00:10:37.20 A Statin is a medication which blocks the body's 00:10:37.59\00:10:40.69 formation of cholesterol and that's kind of science 00:10:40.72\00:10:44.18 is modern sciences way of dealing with the cholesterol 00:10:44.21\00:10:46.79 problem rather than getting to the source of the problem. 00:10:46.82\00:10:49.99 Well, it stop their body from making the stuff 00:10:50.02\00:10:52.85 and you know, I suppose that makes sense we know that 00:10:52.88\00:10:56.71 it decreases heart attacks when we take the medications. 00:10:56.74\00:10:59.82 We know that it decreases information in the body, 00:10:59.85\00:11:02.70 so there is benefit, but isn't it a bit foolish to just 00:11:03.23\00:11:06.34 focus on blocking the formation of cholesterol 00:11:06.37\00:11:09.99 without getting to the thing that made the body tried 00:11:10.02\00:11:13.71 to make cholesterol in the first place. 00:11:13.74\00:11:15.01 Now, someone at this point may be asking the question. 00:11:15.04\00:11:17.77 Well, that's fine for those people who are on a medicine 00:11:17.80\00:11:20.63 just taking one of these Statin medicines, 00:11:20.66\00:11:23.67 but what if I am not taking a Statin medicine. 00:11:23.70\00:11:27.22 Well, we actually had some patients who are not 00:11:27.25\00:11:30.11 taking one of these Statin cholesterol-lowering medicines 00:11:30.14\00:11:33.79 and our next graphic will actually show what happen 00:11:34.40\00:11:36.99 to those individuals. And as you can see these 00:11:37.02\00:11:40.87 individuals had also dramatic decrease in their total 00:11:40.90\00:11:44.72 cholesterol level. In fact, George you can see it went 00:11:44.75\00:11:48.61 from an average of 192 to right down into the 150 range 00:11:48.64\00:11:54.09 and what we tell patients at the Lifestyle Centre 00:11:54.12\00:11:57.30 of America is if you can get your total cholesterol below 00:11:57.33\00:12:00.74 150 that's probably the safest total cholesterol level 00:12:00.77\00:12:05.78 and you can see from the little P value on this slide 00:12:05.81\00:12:09.40 that this result was highly statistically significant, 00:12:09.43\00:12:13.47 so probably not just a result of chance there was real 00:12:13.50\00:12:18.06 drops in cholesterol for those who are not even 00:12:18.09\00:12:20.88 taking a medicine in just 19 days. 00:12:20.91\00:12:23.45 Tim I noticed on those slides a word Vegan 00:12:24.32\00:12:28.75 isn't that a religion people like they don't wear leather 00:12:28.78\00:12:33.90 shoes or leather belts. I mean it kind of brings up 00:12:33.93\00:12:37.42 around some of these thoughts I saw that word 00:12:37.45\00:12:40.89 Vegan on the slide may be you can clarify 00:12:40.92\00:12:44.33 for it that for us. Well, certainly there are some 00:12:44.36\00:12:47.29 individuals who are Vegans and its part of a, 00:12:47.32\00:12:51.69 a broader health focus and you might say even a religious 00:12:51.72\00:12:56.06 focus and that's not what we were talking about here. 00:12:56.09\00:13:00.23 Vegan is simply a word a, a tool to actually share that 00:13:00.91\00:13:06.71 these individuals that had these dramatic cholesterol 00:13:06.74\00:13:10.22 reductions were eating only plants and you could also 00:13:10.25\00:13:14.95 use terms like a total plant based diet or a 100 percent 00:13:14.98\00:13:19.12 vegetarian diet its just a tool to share that in order 00:13:19.15\00:13:24.84 to get these results the individuals were eating 00:13:24.87\00:13:27.91 nothing, but beans and whole grains, fruits, vegetable, 00:13:27.94\00:13:30.52 nuts and seeds, no animal products what so ever 00:13:30.55\00:13:33.45 and so that's why we use the term frankly 00:13:34.38\00:13:36.70 we didn't have much space on the slide and that was 00:13:36.73\00:13:40.54 a powerful word to get the point across without 00:13:40.57\00:13:43.93 being too worried. Well, thank you for clarifying 00:13:43.96\00:13:47.20 that. Well, what other changes do you see? 00:13:47.23\00:13:51.13 Well, you know George the American Heart Association 00:13:51.57\00:13:54.68 has just come out with some interesting data, 00:13:54.71\00:13:58.40 showing that the LDL cholesterol which some 00:13:58.43\00:14:03.57 people call it the bad cholesterol and LDL is stands 00:14:03.60\00:14:07.78 for low density lipoprotein. 00:14:07.81\00:14:11.13 I have a different word that I sometimes use to yes 00:14:11.58\00:14:14.07 get easier, yes sure, share that, because people get 00:14:14.10\00:14:16.76 lost in these acronyms of letters. LDL in my vernacular 00:14:16.79\00:14:22.57 stands for little devil lipoproteins. 00:14:22.60\00:14:25.18 Alright that your sounds man, little devils a little 00:14:25.21\00:14:27.64 devils and they are little they can be little devils. 00:14:27.67\00:14:30.88 Well, of course as only if they get too high 00:14:30.91\00:14:34.20 and if they become chemically damaged as we talked 00:14:34.23\00:14:37.87 about earlier and so the LDL is a cholesterol level 00:14:37.90\00:14:42.30 that we actually its actually a packet of cholesterol 00:14:42.33\00:14:47.08 it's a cholesterol particle like a little suitcase 00:14:47.11\00:14:50.82 that carries cholesterol in the blood stream and 00:14:50.85\00:14:54.29 this is the particular cholesterol package 00:14:54.32\00:14:56.98 if you will that's can end up inside the artery valve 00:14:57.01\00:15:01.77 forming these cholesterol plaques that can rapture 00:15:01.80\00:15:04.36 and cause and heart attack and the stroke. 00:15:04.39\00:15:06.47 So, this number is even more important than the total 00:15:06.80\00:15:10.05 cholesterol number. Yes, yeah it can be 00:15:10.08\00:15:12.77 in fact and what we want to share also is that 00:15:12.80\00:15:16.76 this recent recommendation from the 00:15:16.79\00:15:19.64 American Heart Association is telling us for example 00:15:19.67\00:15:23.18 if you are at the highest risk of a heart attack. 00:15:23.21\00:15:25.86 In other words if you have type 2 diabetes and 00:15:25.89\00:15:28.56 you've already had some kind of a heart event 00:15:28.59\00:15:31.06 may be you had a bypass surgery or heart attack. 00:15:31.09\00:15:33.44 Then they are telling us you need to get that LDL 00:15:33.47\00:15:36.57 or that bad cholesterol or that little devil lipoprotein 00:15:36.60\00:15:40.79 level down less than 70 and so that's it the piece 00:15:40.82\00:15:45.70 of new information most cardiologists, most heart 00:15:45.73\00:15:49.10 specialists would like your LDL level to be less than 100 00:15:49.13\00:15:52.86 and so that's the kind of ranges that we would wanna 00:15:52.89\00:15:58.34 have if you've one of the lower risk of a heart attack 00:15:58.37\00:16:00.52 and probably the lowest risk of a stroke, 00:16:00.55\00:16:02.43 but the exciting thing George is that patients on this 00:16:02.46\00:16:06.84 Lifestyle program were seeing changes also 00:16:06.87\00:16:07.84 and LDL cholesterol. 00:16:09.90\00:16:11.15 Yes, lets look at the next slide and see what 00:16:11.77\00:16:13.62 it looks like. When we go to the next slide 00:16:13.65\00:16:16.04 what you can see is that in those individuals 00:16:16.07\00:16:19.26 who were taking a Statin drug in this case they were 00:16:19.85\00:16:23.23 actually able to lower their LDL or their bad 00:16:23.26\00:16:26.58 cholesterol level from 74 down to 54 as you can see 00:16:26.61\00:16:33.56 that's below 70. Yes So, and these individuals 00:16:33.59\00:16:36.88 did not necessarily have the highest risk of disease 00:16:36.91\00:16:41.77 they were had type 2 diabetes, 00:16:41.80\00:16:43.75 but certainly did not all have heart disease, 00:16:43.78\00:16:45.66 but you can see that they got their cholesterol 00:16:45.69\00:16:48.86 level their LDL below 70 even into the 50s. 00:16:48.89\00:16:52.70 Now, you can also see that not only did those 00:16:53.64\00:16:57.06 who were taking a Statin have a significant 20 point 00:16:57.09\00:17:00.43 reduction in their LDL or bad cholesterol level on a 00:17:00.46\00:17:04.63 total plant diet, but those who were not using Statins 00:17:04.66\00:17:08.52 those who are not using one of these powerful 00:17:08.55\00:17:10.63 medicines to lower cholesterol they also on a total 00:17:10.66\00:17:14.64 plant diet lowered their LDL or bad cholesterol 00:17:14.67\00:17:18.50 almost 30 points 27 points and as you can see there 00:17:18.53\00:17:22.19 its highly statistically significant. So, 00:17:22.22\00:17:24.82 both those who use these medicines is powerful 00:17:24.85\00:17:28.63 cholesterol lowering medicines and those who don't were 00:17:28.66\00:17:31.17 able with a plant diet has significant further 00:17:31.20\00:17:34.70 reductions that even into the accepted optimal 00:17:34.73\00:17:38.86 range for those at highest risk of a heart attack. 00:17:38.89\00:17:40.88 That's interesting Tim but that those are numbers 00:17:40.91\00:17:45.27 from Lifestyle Centre of America is anybody else 00:17:45.30\00:17:48.37 been able to demonstrate these changes. 00:17:48.40\00:17:50.35 Well, actually Dr Jenkins at the University 00:17:51.20\00:17:54.22 of Toronto in Canada did something very interesting. 00:17:54.25\00:17:58.25 He wanted to show or he wanted to actually 00:17:58.28\00:18:00.83 to find out if a plant based diet could lower total 00:18:00.86\00:18:05.46 cholesterol or LDL cholesterol in this case as much 00:18:05.49\00:18:09.02 as a Statin drug one of these most important 00:18:09.05\00:18:11.84 and most popular cholesterol-lowering 00:18:11.87\00:18:13.23 medicines and so he took a largely a vegetarian 00:18:13.26\00:18:16.73 diet like he was total, it was a vegetarian diet 00:18:16.76\00:18:18.85 was a total plant diet and there were some dairy 00:18:18.88\00:18:21.57 products and he added to it some important 00:18:21.60\00:18:24.90 cholesterol lowering plant's ingredients such as 00:18:24.93\00:18:29.07 almonds and soy protein and a margarine made out 00:18:29.10\00:18:33.66 of a plant substance like cholesterol called Fitosterol, 00:18:33.69\00:18:38.11 which actually blocks cholesterol absorption 00:18:38.14\00:18:40.99 and so you can remove more cholesterol from your 00:18:41.02\00:18:43.68 body and, and also solvable fiber which can help 00:18:43.71\00:18:47.90 to reduce the amount of cholesterol that's again 00:18:47.93\00:18:50.95 absorbed back up into the blood stream and send 00:18:50.98\00:18:54.58 more of it out of your body, so he added these 00:18:54.61\00:18:57.08 special plant ingredients to these vegetarian diet 00:18:57.11\00:19:00.86 and he showed that in a several weeks of being 00:19:00.89\00:19:05.37 on one program or the other that the Statin drug 00:19:05.40\00:19:08.95 and the vegetarian or plant based diet had an quick 00:19:08.98\00:19:12.60 a equal ability to lower the LDL cholesterol. 00:19:12.63\00:19:16.18 Well, that's good news, so we can actually make 00:19:16.59\00:19:18.71 changes in our lives dealing with the cause the 00:19:18.74\00:19:23.03 underlying causes of the cholesterol elevation 00:19:23.06\00:19:26.63 and see the same change as we occurred 00:19:26.66\00:19:28.98 from taking a drug. Absolutely in fact one 00:19:29.01\00:19:31.66 of the other changes it wasn't just LDL 00:19:31.69\00:19:34.21 that dropped about the same on a plant based diet as 00:19:34.24\00:19:37.56 what you would see with a medicine, 00:19:38.31\00:19:39.95 but something else call the C-reactive protein which 00:19:39.98\00:19:43.99 measures the amount of inflammation in your blood 00:19:44.02\00:19:47.94 stream and basically what that is measuring 00:19:47.97\00:19:50.87 the amount of activity of the white blood cells 00:19:50.90\00:19:53.97 and this is important because the cholesterol inside 00:19:54.00\00:19:58.08 the artery valve and it actually white blood cells 00:19:58.11\00:20:01.23 are mixed with that cholesterol and if there is a 00:20:01.26\00:20:05.29 lot inflammation in the body these white blood cells 00:20:05.32\00:20:09.26 are more active that makes the cholesterol plaque 00:20:09.29\00:20:11.71 more active its more likely to rapture a clock to form 00:20:11.74\00:20:14.33 in a heart attack and this plant base diet lower 00:20:14.36\00:20:17.20 the amount of inflammation is measured by CRP 00:20:17.23\00:20:20.04 ro C-reactive protein as much as a Statin drug. 00:20:20.07\00:20:23.84 This is really earth shattering news. 00:20:23.87\00:20:26.32 Oh, it's good news for those of us who understand 00:20:26.35\00:20:28.81 the importance of a plant based diet. Especially 00:20:28.84\00:20:32.98 note that the Statin drugs do more than just lower 00:20:33.01\00:20:36.86 the cholesterol. They actually lower the inflammation 00:20:36.89\00:20:41.86 as well and so when we talk about a lifestyle treatment 00:20:41.89\00:20:46.18 to lower cholesterol you need to under that it 00:20:46.94\00:20:49.59 not only lowers cholesterol, but it also lowers the 00:20:49.62\00:20:53.14 inflammation as measured by the CRP or C-reactive 00:20:53.17\00:20:58.22 protein. Well, that's good news Tim a lifestyle change 00:20:58.25\00:21:01.61 than could take a place of a medication and that's 00:21:01.64\00:21:06.83 really good news. Now, there is some other 00:21:06.86\00:21:09.67 cholesterol packages that sometimes are changed 00:21:09.70\00:21:13.56 and need to be fixed tell us about those? 00:21:14.35\00:21:17.40 Well, that's true George and you know lot of people 00:21:17.95\00:21:20.80 who are looking at treatments or tools to help bring 00:21:20.83\00:21:24.77 down the blood cholesterol when someone mentions 00:21:24.80\00:21:27.93 a plant based diet which is rich in carbohydrates 00:21:27.96\00:21:31.40 and again we are not talking about a diet that's rich 00:21:31.43\00:21:35.19 and white flour, white bread and white pasta 00:21:35.22\00:21:38.72 and refined sugars. But what we talking about and 00:21:38.75\00:21:42.38 when we talk about high carbohydrate diet is 00:21:42.41\00:21:45.13 whole grains, beans, vegetables, 00:21:45.16\00:21:48.31 fruits, nuts and seeds. When we talk about this 00:21:48.34\00:21:51.79 kind of a program we are actually talking about a, 00:21:51.82\00:21:55.92 an approach to cholesterol reduction that is a little 00:21:55.95\00:21:58.92 bit different. It is a it is beyond just simply using 00:21:58.95\00:22:03.89 a medicine and some people think well, that approach 00:22:03.92\00:22:08.04 will lower the good cholesterol, it will actually 00:22:08.07\00:22:10.69 cause more harm than good, because we need the 00:22:10.72\00:22:13.30 good cholesterol to get cholesterol out of the body. 00:22:13.33\00:22:16.53 Now, that good cholesterol is called HDL which 00:22:16.56\00:22:20.91 confuses people all over the place got another name 00:22:21.12\00:22:23.28 that sometimes works for that. Share that with us? 00:22:23.31\00:22:25.75 Heavenly darlings those are the good once. 00:22:26.34\00:22:28.72 Heavenly darlings so you know if you have difficulty 00:22:28.75\00:22:32.11 remembering HDL just remember heavenly darlings 00:22:32.14\00:22:36.23 and really they are heavenly George, 00:22:36.26\00:22:38.49 because there are people who have very high total 00:22:38.52\00:22:42.33 cholesterol, very high LDL or bad cholesterol, 00:22:42.36\00:22:45.83 but their good cholesterol is also very high and those 00:22:45.86\00:22:49.56 individuals are largely protected from heart attacks, 00:22:49.59\00:22:53.30 but what was seem in this study at the Lifestyle 00:22:53.33\00:22:57.61 centre where these patients on a total plant diet 00:22:57.64\00:23:00.12 was that HDL did something surprising and if we can see 00:23:00.41\00:23:04.94 that graphic now George tell us what we saw or perhaps 00:23:04.97\00:23:09.97 didn't see with the good cholesterol levels 00:23:10.00\00:23:13.34 in these patients? The good news is that on 00:23:13.37\00:23:15.26 this slide it's demonstrated that the HDL did not 00:23:15.29\00:23:18.81 changed during the program at Lifestyle Centre 00:23:18.84\00:23:23.56 of America using the plant based diet. 00:23:23.59\00:23:25.45 Now, let me explain this to try to make it clear for you. 00:23:26.26\00:23:29.56 You see the literature reports the scientific literature 00:23:29.59\00:23:33.47 reports that when you move to a high carbohydrate 00:23:33.50\00:23:37.89 diet the HDL tense to drop rather than go up and 00:23:37.92\00:23:44.31 so in the literature what they are focusing on is much 00:23:44.34\00:23:47.62 more a refined carbohydrates when we deal with 00:23:47.65\00:23:50.75 100 percent plant based diet, the fiber and other 00:23:51.62\00:23:54.20 things apparently keeps the insulin levels low and makes 00:23:54.23\00:23:59.13 the situation such that the HDL does not have to 00:23:59.16\00:24:03.79 go down. The heavenly darlings don't decrease 00:24:03.82\00:24:06.33 they stay up a high and that is good news. 00:24:07.16\00:24:10.05 This is very good news its very important that the 00:24:10.48\00:24:13.50 HDL the good cholesterol stays high, because that's 00:24:13.53\00:24:17.74 the cholesterol package that they are sending 00:24:17.77\00:24:21.77 cholesterol out of the body and if your able to send 00:24:21.80\00:24:26.16 cholesterol out of the body with a lot of this good 00:24:26.19\00:24:29.52 cholesterol as HDL then it doesn't build up in the artery 00:24:29.55\00:24:33.77 valve nearly as much. Now, that was in, that was dated 00:24:33.80\00:24:37.46 for those who are taking a Statin drug a cholesterol 00:24:37.49\00:24:40.34 lowering drug, but we can go to the next slide George 00:24:40.37\00:24:43.90 tell us what happened in into the HDL or good cholesterol 00:24:43.93\00:24:47.50 and those who are not taking a Statin drug which 00:24:47.53\00:24:50.32 is going to be of course more valuable for many people 00:24:50.35\00:24:53.54 in the audience who went on one of these medicines. 00:24:53.57\00:24:56.05 Well, the results were the same a plant based diet 00:24:56.38\00:24:59.19 did not make the heavenly darlings go down 00:24:59.22\00:25:01.88 and that is good news. It is good news, 00:25:02.54\00:25:05.35 and also George I think its important to understand 00:25:06.76\00:25:10.49 that one of the reasons that people are getting 00:25:10.52\00:25:12.82 more and more heart disease in America is that they 00:25:12.85\00:25:16.84 are becoming more insulin resistant or weight is going 00:25:16.87\00:25:21.78 up or middle is going out or we are gaining more 00:25:21.81\00:25:25.80 weight in the mid section and that often will raise 00:25:25.83\00:25:28.60 the insulin level which drives the good cholesterol 00:25:28.63\00:25:32.38 down and the triglycerides are the fat in the blood up 00:25:32.41\00:25:36.23 and that can dramatically increase or accelerate the 00:25:36.26\00:25:40.65 heart disease the hardening of the arteries the 00:25:40.68\00:25:43.73 Atherosclerosis process. So, when we see a program 00:25:43.76\00:25:46.90 that keeps the good cholesterol stable while bad 00:25:46.93\00:25:51.20 cholesterol drops that's what you want and that's what 00:25:51.23\00:25:54.07 you get when you do the creators methods a total 00:25:54.10\00:25:57.72 plant diet and exercise program and all of 00:25:57.75\00:26:00.41 his other remedies. So, we are back to the 00:26:00.44\00:26:03.64 beginning Tim. Do I really have to take a drug? 00:26:03.67\00:26:07.27 Well, you know there are some people who may have 00:26:08.54\00:26:11.82 to take a drug to lower their cholesterol level, 00:26:11.85\00:26:14.65 but I think what we are pointing out George 00:26:15.28\00:26:17.56 in this program is that perhaps if you have had 00:26:17.59\00:26:22.47 difficulty brining down your total cholesterol your LDL 00:26:22.50\00:26:26.34 or bad cholesterol in the past, perhaps what you wanna 00:26:26.37\00:26:29.54 do is take one more step and that step is to move 00:26:29.57\00:26:33.29 to a total plant diet and an exercise program and 00:26:33.32\00:26:37.71 particularly exercise out in the air fresh and in the sun 00:26:37.74\00:26:41.54 light and you will not only see your bad cholesterol 00:26:41.57\00:26:44.04 level go down, you will see those Triglyceride 00:26:44.07\00:26:46.58 levels tend downward as well. 00:26:46.61\00:26:48.52 And I suppose the good news is also that the lifestyle 00:26:49.00\00:26:52.61 change works as well for those who are taking 00:26:52.64\00:26:56.53 the drug as those who are not, so there is actually 00:26:56.56\00:26:59.07 some added benefit, added benefit absolutely. 00:26:59.10\00:27:01.91 So, in the time remaining is there anything 00:27:03.01\00:27:06.19 else that should be emphasized? 00:27:06.22\00:27:07.48 George there is something that we do need to share 00:27:08.37\00:27:11.81 and that is there may be people out there 00:27:11.84\00:27:14.58 who have tried to get their cholesterol level down 00:27:14.61\00:27:17.71 and they have not succeeded in fact they may 00:27:17.93\00:27:20.12 have even tried to plant based diet and not succeeded 00:27:20.15\00:27:23.21 and there is such a thing is heredity, 00:27:24.24\00:27:26.24 genes if you will and some people have elevated 00:27:26.27\00:27:29.86 cholesterol, but what we want to emphasize is protect 00:27:29.89\00:27:32.89 the cholesterol even if its too high protected 00:27:32.92\00:27:35.91 from damage by using anti-oxidants not pills, 00:27:35.94\00:27:39.91 but whole foods and factored the beacon nut is one 00:27:40.12\00:27:44.38 of the most powerful anti-oxidant nuts. 00:27:44.41\00:27:46.33 The blueberry is a very rich in anti-oxidants and 00:27:46.85\00:27:50.31 so whole plant foods beans are rich in anti-oxidants, 00:27:50.34\00:27:53.61 greens you want to shield your cholesterol, 00:27:53.64\00:27:56.75 so its not damaged by the oxygen free radical 00:27:56.78\00:28:01.28 and so in summary we just want to encourage you 00:28:01.50\00:28:04.17 to follow the creators lead and you will 00:28:04.20\00:28:07.21 discover how wonderfully we are made. 00:28:07.24\00:28:11.04
