Hello and welcome to this segment of "Wonderfully Made" 00:00:57.53\00:01:02.71 I'm Dr. Neil Nedley, practicing physician, 00:01:02.74\00:01:06.13 and author of a book entitled "Depression, the Way Out" 00:01:06.14\00:01:11.27 We are going to be discussing a segment of 00:01:11.30\00:01:15.32 "Depression, the Way Out" our final segment 00:01:15.35\00:01:18.26 of this 4-part series here today. 00:01:18.29\00:01:21.40 Depression does not give any indication as to the 00:01:21.41\00:01:25.54 cause of the disease. 00:01:25.55\00:01:27.54 If I were to have somebody come in to my office 00:01:27.57\00:01:31.36 with swollen feet, and I had them leave the office 00:01:31.39\00:01:35.40 with a diagnosis of swollen foot syndrome, 00:01:35.43\00:01:38.73 that would not really tell the patient anything... 00:01:38.76\00:01:41.10 other than the fact that he has swollen feet. 00:01:41.13\00:01:43.47 It wouldn't tell him if it was due to his heart, 00:01:43.50\00:01:45.86 whether it's due to his kidneys, 00:01:45.89\00:01:48.05 whether it's due to the liver, 00:01:48.08\00:01:49.31 whether it's due to the lymph nodes, or the veins... 00:01:49.34\00:01:53.77 All of these things can cause problems with swollen feet. 00:01:53.80\00:01:57.54 But unfortunately, many people leave a physician's office, 00:01:57.57\00:02:01.38 or psychiatrist's office, and then the only thing they're 00:02:01.41\00:02:05.07 left with is this diagnosis of depression. 00:02:05.10\00:02:08.38 That's very similar to saying, "swollen foot syndrome" 00:02:08.41\00:02:12.38 because it doesn't give any indication as to the 00:02:12.41\00:02:15.25 cause of the disease. 00:02:15.28\00:02:17.76 If we want to get to the cure of swollen feet, 00:02:17.79\00:02:20.09 we have to come up with the reason for the swollen feet. 00:02:20.12\00:02:24.36 If we want to come up with a cure for depression, 00:02:24.37\00:02:26.73 we have to come up with the reason for depression. 00:02:26.76\00:02:30.28 And I'm going to show you 10 different hit categories 00:02:30.31\00:02:34.84 that can actually cause depression. 00:02:34.87\00:02:37.51 Now the brain is a very resilient structure, 00:02:37.54\00:02:41.36 and can actually suffer 3 hit categories without 00:02:41.37\00:02:44.42 going into depression... 00:02:44.45\00:02:45.51 But once a 4th hit is there, depression comes about. 00:02:45.54\00:02:49.14 On you're screen, you will see the 10 hit categories. 00:02:49.17\00:02:53.32 Now, if anyone has more than 3 of those hit categories, 00:03:21.41\00:03:27.24 that are active or blows to the brain, 00:03:27.27\00:03:29.69 they will end up with depression. 00:03:29.72\00:03:31.43 That ought to tell us that just having the genetics 00:03:31.46\00:03:34.67 for depression will not cause it by itself. 00:03:34.70\00:03:37.53 And it will also tell us that some people will suffer 00:03:37.56\00:03:39.73 depression that don't have the genes for depression. 00:03:39.76\00:03:42.78 So it's not just a genetic illness, or it's not just 00:03:42.81\00:03:45.57 a social illness. 00:03:45.60\00:03:47.47 In this segment today, we are going to go through 00:03:47.50\00:03:50.00 some general treatment measures that can help depression 00:03:50.03\00:03:54.75 no matter what the cause of depression. 00:03:54.78\00:03:57.86 Before we go into these general treatment measures, 00:03:57.89\00:04:00.30 I would just like to underscore one more time; however, 00:04:00.33\00:04:03.00 that it is important to find the CAUSE of depression 00:04:03.03\00:04:06.45 in order to adequately cure it. 00:04:06.48\00:04:09.59 But just like if you have swollen feet, 00:04:09.60\00:04:12.12 a diuretic will help no matter what the cause 00:04:12.15\00:04:15.26 A diuretic meaning a medicine 00:04:15.29\00:04:16.76 that can get rid of water and swelling. 00:04:16.79\00:04:19.24 So there are some general treatment measures 00:04:19.27\00:04:21.85 that can help most people with depression, 00:04:21.86\00:04:25.20 no matter what the cause. 00:04:25.23\00:04:26.62 And so these treatment measures ought to be 00:04:26.63\00:04:28.49 utilized frequently in those that are depressed, 00:04:28.50\00:04:31.82 and they can actually help facilitate 00:04:31.85\00:04:35.11 a cure for the disease. 00:04:35.14\00:04:37.81 The first general treatment measure 00:04:37.84\00:04:39.83 that I would like to discuss is MUSIC 00:04:39.86\00:04:43.89 This study was done at the University of Miami in Florida, 00:04:43.90\00:04:49.25 and it took people who were depressed, and it actually put 00:04:49.28\00:04:53.61 them on a program where every 2 weeks, 00:04:53.64\00:04:56.31 they would receive guided image and music therapy. 00:04:56.34\00:05:00.64 Now guided image therapy just means that they were 00:05:00.67\00:05:04.36 to think about images from their own life 00:05:04.39\00:05:08.14 ...to think about their own life, and where they've been 00:05:08.17\00:05:11.02 and where they'd like to go, as they were listening 00:05:11.03\00:05:13.39 to classical music. 00:05:13.42\00:05:15.37 This was traditional classical music by Bach and Brahms, 00:05:15.40\00:05:19.58 Ravel was also utilized, Respighi also was utilized... 00:05:19.61\00:05:25.97 But traditional classical music that had a nice 00:05:26.00\00:05:30.31 melody and a nice harmony, nice rhythm, 00:05:30.34\00:05:34.18 but didn't have what the contemporary classical 00:05:34.21\00:05:37.07 has where it really often doesn't have any melody 00:05:37.10\00:05:40.20 rhythm or harmony at all. 00:05:40.23\00:05:42.09 Interestingly, it was utilized in an age-group, 00:05:42.12\00:05:44.58 the 23-45 year-old age group that had not, by and large, 00:05:44.61\00:05:50.53 been exposed, seriously, to classical music. 00:05:50.54\00:05:54.16 You'd be surprised how many people in our society today 00:05:54.19\00:05:57.24 ages 23-45, who have never been exposed to classical music. 00:05:57.25\00:06:02.12 They've been exposed to the popular music of the day. 00:06:02.15\00:06:05.58 They've been exposed to rock and roll rhythms, 00:06:05.61\00:06:08.41 and heavy metal rhythms, and country music rhythms 00:06:08.44\00:06:11.63 But, other than a jingle on television here or there 00:06:11.66\00:06:14.59 where there might be a classical piece being 00:06:14.62\00:06:16.66 played in the background, 00:06:16.69\00:06:18.18 they haven't seriously been exposed to it. 00:06:18.21\00:06:20.52 So the music was not chosen because they prefer that music 00:06:20.55\00:06:24.11 If they haven't been exposed to it, of course, 00:06:24.14\00:06:25.86 they're not going to prefer it, per se 00:06:25.87\00:06:28.63 But they also utilized other forms of music for 00:06:28.66\00:06:32.99 the control groups. 00:06:33.02\00:06:34.16 In fact, one control group had no music played 00:06:34.19\00:06:37.54 to them at all, so they could really see the difference 00:06:37.57\00:06:40.08 between the groups here in this study. 00:06:40.11\00:06:44.41 Interestingly, the group that was being exposed to the 00:06:44.44\00:06:48.46 classical music, and this was, like I said, every 2 weeks 00:06:48.49\00:06:51.87 but only 6 sessions... 00:06:51.88\00:06:53.10 So this study was only 12 weeks in length. 00:06:53.13\00:06:55.82 THIS GROUP actually had significant objective 00:06:55.85\00:06:59.84 improvement in their depression. 00:06:59.87\00:07:02.33 They had improved scores on their tests of overall mood, 00:07:02.36\00:07:06.23 they reported feeling less depressed, 00:07:06.26\00:07:09.68 and they also reported feeling less fatigue, 00:07:09.71\00:07:12.63 and some of the other symptoms of depression. 00:07:12.66\00:07:15.09 Now, in addition, they had 00:07:15.12\00:07:17.63 objective measures of depression measured... 00:07:17.66\00:07:20.78 And that was done by taking a blood cortisol level. 00:07:20.81\00:07:25.02 When many people are depressed, their cortisol levels will go up 00:07:25.05\00:07:28.67 and that is not a healthy factor for the body when 00:07:28.70\00:07:32.15 you have too much cortisol. 00:07:32.18\00:07:33.41 A number of even physical diseases can result from it 00:07:33.44\00:07:37.72 that many people are aware of... 00:07:37.75\00:07:40.97 diseases such as osteoporosis and ulcers, 00:07:41.00\00:07:43.67 and diseases of this nature. 00:07:43.70\00:07:46.26 And the cortisol levels went down significantly in this group 00:07:46.29\00:07:51.18 Interestingly, other forms of music did NOT have 00:07:51.21\00:07:54.52 a beneficial effect as far as depression is concerned, 00:07:54.55\00:07:58.82 and also interestingly, those other types of music did NOT 00:07:58.85\00:08:02.08 seem to have an enhancement in the frontal lobe function 00:08:02.11\00:08:05.46 that is also not only nice, but I think a requirement 00:08:05.49\00:08:09.82 for those that are suffering from depression. 00:08:09.85\00:08:14.06 And, I think this study is certainly one that deserves 00:08:14.09\00:08:18.52 more attention and more contemplation, 00:08:18.53\00:08:20.75 particularly when you look at the voluminous studies on 00:08:20.78\00:08:23.08 music and mental health. 00:08:23.11\00:08:24.90 There is only one particular type of music that repeatedly 00:08:24.93\00:08:29.09 shows both subjective and objective measures 00:08:29.12\00:08:31.72 of improvement, and that is music that is of 00:08:31.75\00:08:35.52 the traditional classical variety. 00:08:35.55\00:08:38.42 And I think even in our worship services, 00:08:38.45\00:08:41.31 we ought to keep that in mind. 00:08:41.34\00:08:42.40 I've had people ask me in regards to worship services, 00:08:42.43\00:08:46.52 that as long as there are religious lyrics to a song, 00:08:46.55\00:08:51.26 it shouldn't really matter WHAT type of music is being 00:08:51.29\00:08:54.53 played in the background there. 00:08:54.56\00:08:57.20 And really, this would be very characteristic and similar 00:08:57.23\00:09:01.11 to someone who thinks it will not hurt them to smoke 00:09:01.14\00:09:04.60 as long as they're smoking in church! 00:09:04.63\00:09:07.21 And, of course, if you smoke in church, it's going to harm you 00:09:07.24\00:09:11.62 just like as if you didn't smoke in church. 00:09:11.65\00:09:14.15 There might be a little advantage to smoking 00:09:14.16\00:09:16.40 in church... versus smoking out in the general public, 00:09:16.43\00:09:19.95 because at least you have some religious things 00:09:19.98\00:09:22.14 that you're contemplating on. 00:09:22.17\00:09:23.57 But the BEST advantage would be NOT TO SMOKE 00:09:23.60\00:09:26.79 while you're in church... 00:09:26.82\00:09:27.93 And, while you're in church, the best advantage would be 00:09:27.96\00:09:30.63 to contemplate and have the type of music being selected 00:09:30.64\00:09:34.30 that is going to uplift the thoughts, not only spiritually 00:09:34.33\00:09:36.98 ...the great spiritual themes, but to have the music 00:09:37.01\00:09:39.45 that is going to enhance frontal lobe function. 00:09:39.48\00:09:43.36 Another aspect of general treatment measures for 00:09:43.37\00:09:48.00 depression is a mental... for lack of a better term, 00:09:48.03\00:09:54.29 a mental twist that we actually recommend 00:09:54.32\00:09:57.87 patients undergo. 00:09:57.90\00:09:59.37 This twist is not something that is brainwashing. 00:09:59.40\00:10:01.93 It actually helps to, I think, UN-brainwash 00:10:01.96\00:10:05.04 many people with depression. 00:10:05.07\00:10:07.55 And that twist is avoiding pessimism... 00:10:07.56\00:10:11.17 Now, many people tend to look at the pessimistic 00:10:11.18\00:10:16.27 side of life. 00:10:16.30\00:10:17.38 This study was done in well over 200 patients 00:10:17.41\00:10:21.91 at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio 00:10:21.94\00:10:25.17 These subjects were studies to their degree of 00:10:25.20\00:10:27.95 optimism and pessimism. 00:10:27.98\00:10:30.49 Pessimism predicted anxiety, 00:10:30.52\00:10:32.72 also predicted stress, physical disease, 00:10:32.75\00:10:36.74 as well as depression. 00:10:36.77\00:10:39.43 What do you think optimism predicted? 00:10:39.46\00:10:41.77 Well most people would tend to think that optimism 00:10:41.80\00:10:44.95 predicted the opposite of those things... 00:10:44.98\00:10:47.04 all beneficial things. 00:10:47.07\00:10:48.60 But really, optimism predicted NOTHING in this study. 00:10:48.63\00:10:52.47 And as we take a look at optimism, 00:10:52.48\00:10:54.95 from an objective standpoint, 00:10:54.98\00:10:56.40 more and more, we're finding that it 00:10:56.43\00:10:57.57 doesn't really predict anything. 00:10:57.61\00:10:59.17 What is the problem with optimism? 00:10:59.21\00:11:00.74 Well it's not really a problem since it didn't 00:11:00.77\00:11:02.72 cause problems, per se; 00:11:02.75\00:11:04.61 although it wasn't near as helpful as those 00:11:04.62\00:11:06.53 avoiding pessimism. 00:11:06.56\00:11:08.06 But when you're too optimistic, REALITY can set in... 00:11:08.09\00:11:11.37 And when reality sets in, time after time, 00:11:11.38\00:11:14.18 you realize that your optimism is really dream world 00:11:14.21\00:11:17.64 and that doesn't really help the mental or physical being. 00:11:17.67\00:11:22.36 The study's author at Ohio State University 00:11:22.39\00:11:25.47 mentioned, "While the power on positive thinking is encouraged 00:11:25.50\00:11:28.44 as a way to improve health, and well-being, 00:11:28.59\00:11:31.36 this study shows it is more important to avoid 00:11:31.39\00:11:34.83 negative thinking, and that's an important 00:11:34.86\00:11:38.78 component to consider. 00:11:38.81\00:11:40.72 Now, what would we do for a patient who has a tendency 00:11:40.75\00:11:45.41 to look at the pessimistic side of life? 00:11:45.42\00:11:47.84 Often we will have a picture up on a screen of 00:11:47.87\00:11:51.81 a mountain setting, but that is covered in clouds 00:11:51.82\00:11:56.47 and there are some dead leaves on the floor of the valley 00:11:56.50\00:12:00.05 before the clouds... 00:12:00.06\00:12:01.30 It's still a beautiful scene... 00:12:01.33\00:12:02.63 there are still flowers blooming in the scene... 00:12:02.66\00:12:05.82 And then we will ask the person what they think about that scene 00:12:05.85\00:12:09.51 You'd be surprised how many focus in on the fact that it's 00:12:09.54\00:12:12.23 cloudy, and that there is dead leaves on the floor 00:12:12.26\00:12:15.69 instead of on the beautiful aspects of that scene... 00:12:15.72\00:12:18.37 the beautiful mountains, and the beautiful flowers 00:12:18.40\00:12:20.59 And so it is with life! 00:12:20.62\00:12:22.81 In life, there will always be positive things to 00:12:22.84\00:12:25.86 focus in on and negative things to focus in on. 00:12:25.89\00:12:29.07 And throughout a daily experience, 00:12:29.10\00:12:31.42 you will have these type of things. 00:12:31.45\00:12:32.93 What are you going to tend to talk about? 00:12:32.96\00:12:34.94 What are you going to have your thoughts sifted through? 00:12:34.97\00:12:39.61 It's actually much better to talk about the positive 00:12:39.64\00:12:42.83 things, and to discuss these things... 00:12:42.86\00:12:45.09 instead of discussing the negative things, 00:12:45.12\00:12:46.92 or the things that are not going so well. 00:12:46.95\00:12:49.35 We have our patients that have depression actually undergo 00:12:49.38\00:12:54.31 several thoughts... 3 or 4 different positive 00:12:54.34\00:12:58.28 thoughts that they can think on in a day's time 00:12:58.31\00:13:01.29 and when they catch themselves thinking on the pessimistic 00:13:01.32\00:13:04.43 side of things, they immediately switch their thoughts 00:13:04.46\00:13:07.57 to something positive. 00:13:07.60\00:13:09.12 Our mind if of such that we can only concentrate 00:13:09.15\00:13:12.16 on one grand theme at a time... 00:13:12.19\00:13:14.59 And that's unfortunate in some cases, 00:13:14.62\00:13:16.85 but actually it's very fortunate in another... 00:13:16.88\00:13:19.22 And that is, we can shift our thought processes 00:13:19.25\00:13:21.67 from pessimism to optimism... 00:13:21.68\00:13:24.69 or at least avoiding the pessimism. 00:13:24.72\00:13:27.31 It doesn't necessarily have to be an optimistic thought, 00:13:27.34\00:13:29.43 but it shouldn't be a pessimistic thought. 00:13:29.46\00:13:31.53 This plan that we have utilized, many patients tell me 00:13:31.56\00:13:36.86 is one of the BEST SECRETS that they have had 00:13:36.89\00:13:39.67 for getting over their disease. 00:13:39.70\00:13:41.83 Ellen White stated in the book "Ministry of Healing" 00:13:41.86\00:13:44.69 "It is a positive duty to avoid melancholic discontented 00:13:44.72\00:13:52.30 thoughts and feelings as much a duty as it is to pray" 00:13:52.33\00:13:56.13 Now, Ellen White is a spiritual writer, was very much 00:13:56.16\00:13:59.78 interested in people having a more active prayer life... 00:13:59.81\00:14:02.33 But she said there was something JUST as important as prayer, 00:14:02.36\00:14:06.03 and that is AVOIDING the melancholic discontented 00:14:06.06\00:14:09.63 thoughts and feelings. 00:14:09.66\00:14:10.88 I think that's one of the reasons why country music 00:14:10.91\00:14:13.51 tends not to score high as far as mood elevation 00:14:13.54\00:14:16.18 is concerned. 00:14:16.21\00:14:17.67 The guitars are whining, and the singers are whining 00:14:17.68\00:14:20.12 about their lost dog, or their crashed pickup truck, 00:14:20.15\00:14:22.99 or their broken up marriage, or something along this line. 00:14:23.02\00:14:27.13 And that of course, can produce some melancholic discontented 00:14:27.14\00:14:31.36 thoughts and feelings down the road 00:14:31.39\00:14:33.37 even though the music, at the time, might seem to be 00:14:33.38\00:14:36.16 humorous, or might seem to be something that is light 00:14:36.19\00:14:40.45 or trivial at the time. 00:14:40.48\00:14:43.81 Another area that can help most depressed patients 00:14:43.82\00:14:49.04 particularly if they have at least moderate depression 00:14:49.05\00:14:51.93 is herbal therapy. 00:14:51.96\00:14:54.54 Now there are certain types of herbs that can benefit 00:14:54.57\00:14:57.09 the mental outlook, and one of those herbs is 00:14:57.10\00:14:59.22 "St. John's Wort" 00:14:59.25\00:15:00.83 You can buy St. John's Wort over-the-counter in 00:15:00.86\00:15:03.80 virtually any health food store or any pharmacy 00:15:03.83\00:15:06.66 throughout this nation. 00:15:06.69\00:15:07.85 It's very inexpensive, and it actually is helpful 00:15:07.88\00:15:11.97 to many depressed patients in overcoming their illness 00:15:11.98\00:15:16.37 particularly early on when they 00:15:16.40\00:15:18.05 first discover that they are depressed. 00:15:18.08\00:15:20.84 We recommend St. John's Wort be consumed twice a day 00:15:20.87\00:15:24.97 and it will improve mood, but it can have some 00:15:25.00\00:15:29.17 side effects that you should be aware of. 00:15:29.18\00:15:31.01 In some people, they will get a skin rash when they're 00:15:31.04\00:15:33.09 exposed to the sun while they're taking St. John's Wort 00:15:33.12\00:15:37.28 and in other people, it might elevate their blood pressure 00:15:37.31\00:15:40.29 particularly if they are very sensitive to tyramine foods. 00:15:40.32\00:15:43.73 Foods such as are present in cheese that can raise 00:15:43.76\00:15:48.34 their blood pressure, but most people 00:15:48.37\00:15:49.87 will not have those side effects 00:15:49.90\00:15:51.27 will virtually not even know they're taking it as far as 00:15:51.30\00:15:53.52 negative side effects, and can benefit from it. 00:15:53.53\00:15:56.87 Another herb that helps is "ginkgo biloba" 00:15:56.90\00:16:00.33 Ginkgo biloba will not help the depression so much as the 00:16:00.36\00:16:06.48 concentration. 00:16:06.51\00:16:07.77 One of the symptoms of depression is 00:16:07.80\00:16:10.72 lack of being able to concentrate and make decisions 00:16:10.75\00:16:14.30 in a healthy, analytical manner. 00:16:14.34\00:16:16.52 The ginkgo biloba can help bring that back to the patient. 00:16:16.53\00:16:23.16 However, it can cause bleeding when taken with aspirin... 00:16:23.19\00:16:26.13 And so we don't recommend its usage with aspirin, 00:16:26.16\00:16:30.03 and can RARELY cause some dizziness in some individuals. 00:16:30.04\00:16:34.50 A 3rd herb, and the newest kid on the block, 00:16:34.51\00:16:37.53 as far as herbal therapy for depression is concerned, 00:16:37.56\00:16:40.03 is also the most potent herb for depression. 00:16:40.06\00:16:43.07 This herb is as potent as using a standard antidepressant 00:16:43.08\00:16:46.80 medication in most cases. 00:16:46.83\00:16:48.53 The difference is you don't have to get a prescription for it... 00:16:48.56\00:16:51.07 You can get this over-the-counter 00:16:51.10\00:16:53.02 It's called "SAM-e" and it stands for a chemical 00:16:53.05\00:17:00.31 name called "S-adenosylmethionine" 00:17:00.34\00:17:03.31 Trials of this medication using up to 800 mg twice a day 00:17:03.34\00:17:08.24 showed that it's very equivalent to the standard antidepressant 00:17:08.27\00:17:11.57 medications that are out there. 00:17:11.60\00:17:13.40 However, it CAN increase anxiety levels, 00:17:13.43\00:17:17.42 and in some cases might increase a blood test called a 00:17:17.45\00:17:21.42 "homocysteine test" which can act very similar to cholesterol 00:17:21.43\00:17:24.89 in elevating it in certain cases... 00:17:24.92\00:17:26.99 And so this is something that you would want to keep in mind 00:17:27.02\00:17:30.45 while you are taking SAM-e. 00:17:30.48\00:17:33.85 Then, of course, there are the medications for depression. 00:17:33.88\00:17:37.13 As a physician, I prescribe some of these medications 00:17:37.16\00:17:40.87 for certain individuals. 00:17:40.90\00:17:42.07 I usually do not prescribe them for mild-to-moderate depression 00:17:42.08\00:17:46.02 But for moderate to more severe forms of depression 00:17:46.05\00:17:48.82 where the person is starting to become incapacitated, 00:17:48.85\00:17:51.52 can't really work effectively. 00:17:51.55\00:17:54.42 Where the depression is really affecting their life, 00:17:54.45\00:17:56.47 I will utilize medication in these cases. 00:17:56.50\00:18:02.50 The medicines that are most commonly used are 00:18:02.53\00:18:06.17 the "SSRIs" or the 00:18:06.20\00:18:08.60 "selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors" 00:18:08.63\00:18:11.91 These medicines some of you might have heard of... 00:18:11.94\00:18:14.03 Prozac would fall into this category, 00:18:14.06\00:18:16.70 Paxil would fall into this category, 00:18:16.71\00:18:18.52 Celexa would fall into this category, 00:18:18.55\00:18:21.38 Zoloft would also fall into this category... 00:18:21.41\00:18:24.46 and there's a 5th one called 00:18:24.49\00:18:25.61 "Luvox" that also falls into this category. 00:18:25.62\00:18:29.58 These medications will improve mood.. 00:18:29.61\00:18:31.97 They'll decrease crying. 00:18:32.00\00:18:33.54 They will decrease hostility reactions. 00:18:33.57\00:18:36.31 They will increase social affiliations. 00:18:36.34\00:18:38.66 And because they have these beneficial effects, 00:18:38.69\00:18:41.84 many people actually get hooked on these 00:18:41.87\00:18:44.79 medicines unfortunately, and as a result 00:18:44.82\00:18:47.43 of being hooked on the medicines, 00:18:47.46\00:18:49.89 they feel like they have to take them as part 00:18:49.92\00:18:52.06 of their morning vitamins. 00:18:52.09\00:18:53.94 And this really does not have to be... if they were to find 00:18:53.97\00:18:56.70 the underlying cause of depression. 00:18:56.73\00:18:59.71 Well, there are some problems with these medications 00:18:59.74\00:19:02.55 that many people don't really recognize when they first 00:19:02.58\00:19:05.40 start taking them, and that is... 00:19:05.43\00:19:07.18 they can also cause some mental side effects... 00:19:07.21\00:19:10.19 Most common of which is these medicines increase 00:19:10.22\00:19:13.75 impulsiveness. 00:19:13.76\00:19:15.63 Now you would certainly not want that to happen 00:19:15.66\00:19:19.31 in you, particularly if you're just having mild depression. 00:19:19.34\00:19:22.24 An increase of impulsivity is not generally a good 00:19:22.27\00:19:26.51 mental attribute to have. 00:19:26.54\00:19:29.05 In addition, it can cause an "I don't care attitude" 00:19:29.08\00:19:31.80 actually decreasing the alarm responses. 00:19:31.83\00:19:34.86 I have had individuals who have been on these medicines 00:19:34.89\00:19:38.13 for some time, and then their spouse dies maybe suddenly 00:19:38.16\00:19:43.57 and they go to the funeral, 00:19:43.60\00:19:45.29 and they can't even cry at the funeral. 00:19:45.30\00:19:48.82 They know they should be sad. 00:19:48.85\00:19:50.77 They had a good relationship with their husband. 00:19:50.80\00:19:52.50 It wasn't because they didn't have a good marriage. 00:19:52.53\00:19:55.37 But the medication was actually blocking the grief response, 00:19:55.40\00:20:00.56 and it caused an "I don't care" attitude, 00:20:00.59\00:20:03.34 and that is not necessarily a good thing. 00:20:03.37\00:20:06.64 This is why we try to take people off of these medicines... 00:20:06.67\00:20:10.90 Actually, we probably take more people OFF of these medicines 00:20:10.93\00:20:13.62 than we do put people On these medicines, 00:20:13.65\00:20:16.19 even though I treat depression pretty commonly in my practice 00:20:16.22\00:20:21.22 and that is because we are getting to the root causes 00:20:21.25\00:20:24.54 of the disease, and after we get to the root causes, 00:20:24.57\00:20:28.40 we can take these medications off, 00:20:28.41\00:20:30.35 and within 5 to 6 months, most people can be off these 00:20:30.36\00:20:33.88 medicines and live a very healthy and happy life, 00:20:33.91\00:20:37.30 and actually feel better without the use of the medications. 00:20:37.33\00:20:40.49 In addition, these SSRIs can cause other side effects; 00:20:40.52\00:20:44.16 weight gain, about 8-10 pound weight gain is common 00:20:44.17\00:20:47.49 for individuals taking SSRIs. 00:20:47.52\00:20:50.64 In addition, gastrointestinal problems... 00:20:50.67\00:20:52.80 Zoloft, for instance, can cause a lot of diarrhea, 00:20:52.83\00:20:55.20 can cause some stomach cramping that tends to go away over time, 00:20:55.23\00:20:58.95 and then, it can even cause insomnia... 00:20:58.98\00:21:02.14 And, very commonly, these medicines cause 00:21:02.17\00:21:05.05 sexual dysfunction, and can even decrease libido. 00:21:05.08\00:21:09.76 Then there are other antidepressant medications 00:21:09.79\00:21:13.61 that are also commonly used... the "tricyclic" antidepressants 00:21:13.64\00:21:17.04 and I should mention these because they can also 00:21:17.07\00:21:20.06 be general treatment measures for depression. 00:21:20.09\00:21:22.62 The tricyclic antidepressants tend to cause a dry mouth, 00:21:22.65\00:21:25.76 they can cause your heart to race, 00:21:25.79\00:21:27.67 and they can also cause some other side effects 00:21:27.70\00:21:31.05 such as drowsiness, and even heart rhythm problems 00:21:31.08\00:21:34.29 in certain instances. 00:21:34.32\00:21:35.33 We tend not to use these medicines near as much 00:21:35.36\00:21:37.62 simply because they have more side effects. 00:21:37.65\00:21:39.62 They also can cause weight gain. 00:21:39.65\00:21:41.89 What are the tricyclic antidepressants? 00:21:41.92\00:21:44.36 These would be medicines like... 00:21:44.39\00:21:45.84 Elavil, Limbitrol, Norpramin, Pamelor, Sinequan, 00:21:45.87\00:21:49.33 Tofranil and Triavil. 00:21:49.36\00:21:52.14 And there are actually even more medicines in that category 00:21:52.17\00:21:56.29 and more generic medications. 00:21:56.32\00:21:58.30 And speaking about medications, I would like to tell you about 00:21:58.33\00:22:02.57 a study that was done that introduces another area 00:22:02.60\00:22:06.68 that can help virtually every depressed patient... 00:22:06.71\00:22:10.25 And that is a study that involved 00:22:10.28\00:22:13.21 CHRONICALLY-depressed patients. 00:22:13.24\00:22:16.08 Now what's the difference between acute depression, 00:22:16.09\00:22:18.49 and chronic depression? 00:22:18.52\00:22:19.50 Chronic depression, by definition means 00:22:19.53\00:22:21.90 you have had it for more than 2 years, 00:22:21.93\00:22:25.21 and this, of course, is a major problem. 00:22:25.24\00:22:28.01 There are all sorts of physical problems that 00:22:28.04\00:22:30.07 can come about as a result of having depression. 00:22:30.10\00:22:32.21 They had depression for more than 2 years. 00:22:32.24\00:22:35.32 They were averaging 20 years of depression, 00:22:35.35\00:22:37.50 and they were put on just 2 therapies... 00:22:37.53\00:22:39.52 a medication called "Serzone," 00:22:39.55\00:22:42.11 and then a type of counseling called... 00:22:42.14\00:22:46.31 "cognitive behavioral therapy" 00:22:46.34\00:22:48.48 And I'd like you to remember that term... 00:22:48.51\00:22:50.43 "cognitive behavioral therapy" 00:22:50.46\00:22:52.07 because it's the only type of counseling that's been shown 00:22:52.10\00:22:55.13 to be better than taking a placebo pill. 00:22:55.16\00:22:57.76 Most types of counseling that are done by psychologists 00:22:57.79\00:23:01.90 across this nation have NEVER been shown to be better 00:23:01.93\00:23:05.49 than taking a placebo pill... and that's unfortunate. 00:23:05.52\00:23:08.53 Many people go to their counselor thinking they're 00:23:08.56\00:23:10.38 going to get help, and that's because the counselor 00:23:10.41\00:23:13.42 tends to perform a type of psychotherapy that 00:23:13.45\00:23:16.02 focuses in on PAST EVENTS in an individual's life, 00:23:16.05\00:23:19.66 and how they've shaped the present situation. 00:23:19.69\00:23:22.34 And they go back into having you deal with these past 00:23:22.37\00:23:25.91 life events in a certain way so that you can finally 00:23:25.92\00:23:28.71 get to the place where you're not depressed. 00:23:28.74\00:23:31.07 Well it turns out that's no better than taking a placebo. 00:23:31.10\00:23:33.70 It's an unending process that continues for a pretty 00:23:33.73\00:23:37.72 long period of time... 00:23:37.75\00:23:39.46 and the unfortunate thing is people think they're getting 00:23:39.49\00:23:41.92 help, when actually they may be not getting any help at all 00:23:41.95\00:23:44.99 In fact, sometimes it worsens their situation because 00:23:45.02\00:23:47.88 it can turn them against their mother and father, 00:23:47.91\00:23:50.11 and other people in their life that have been 00:23:50.14\00:23:53.37 trying to help the individual. 00:23:53.40\00:23:56.06 And so the type of cognitive behavioral therapy 00:23:56.09\00:23:59.59 that was used focused in on the person's 00:23:59.62\00:24:02.87 individual responsibility... 00:24:02.90\00:24:05.22 NOT on how past events shape a person's life... 00:24:05.25\00:24:08.68 And WHAT that person could do differently 00:24:08.71\00:24:11.25 in their own life now. 00:24:11.28\00:24:13.13 That showed that 85% of patients who went to that type 00:24:13.16\00:24:20.12 of therapy actually improved with the combination of 00:24:20.15\00:24:25.26 medications and cognitive behavioral therapy 00:24:25.29\00:24:28.03 That is much higher than has ever been recorded 00:24:28.06\00:24:30.60 in chronically-depressed patients. 00:24:30.63\00:24:33.82 Another aspect that can help virtually every 00:24:33.85\00:24:37.45 depressed patient is a strong religious faith. 00:24:37.48\00:24:40.01 This study took a look at intrinsic religiosity versus 00:24:40.04\00:24:44.88 extrinsic religiosity. 00:24:44.89\00:24:47.15 The difference between the 2 is intrinsic means 00:24:47.18\00:24:49.49 that you actually believe in God 00:24:49.52\00:24:51.12 You believe in His Word. You have an active faith. 00:24:51.15\00:24:53.81 Extrinsic religiosity means that you're going through 00:24:53.84\00:24:57.06 the external forms. 00:24:57.09\00:24:58.15 It might be doing the rosary. 00:24:58.18\00:24:59.61 It might be church attendance, 00:24:59.64\00:25:00.97 or some external form of religion. 00:25:00.98\00:25:03.34 Those with the INTRINSIC religiosity 00:25:03.37\00:25:05.96 actually scored significantly better on tests of mood 00:25:05.99\00:25:10.07 after they were depressed... 00:25:10.10\00:25:11.96 And so that means if you have a strong religious faith, 00:25:11.97\00:25:14.80 you tend to recover from depression significantly sooner. 00:25:14.83\00:25:18.54 And this goes along even with Scriptural themes... 00:25:18.57\00:25:20.97 You know there were people depressed in the Bible times, 00:25:21.00\00:25:23.46 Elijah suffered from depression. 00:25:23.49\00:25:25.42 David suffered from depression. 00:25:25.43\00:25:27.41 There are indications that other great people in the Bible 00:25:27.44\00:25:32.36 suffered from depression. 00:25:32.39\00:25:33.77 David talked about his depression, 00:25:33.80\00:25:35.65 and talked how the Lord helped him through that depression. 00:25:35.68\00:25:39.21 There's a quote from the Apostle Paul in regards to 00:25:39.24\00:25:42.75 depression... in Hebrews 12:11-13 00:25:42.78\00:25:47.38 He said, "Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be 00:25:47.41\00:25:50.30 joyous but grievous" 00:25:50.33\00:25:52.40 That is certainly true of depressed patients. 00:25:52.43\00:25:55.03 I've had many of them tell me... they have no joy 00:25:55.06\00:25:57.81 it's only grievous feelings. 00:25:57.84\00:26:00.56 But he goes on... "Nevertheless, afterward it 00:26:00.59\00:26:03.36 yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness under them 00:26:03.39\00:26:06.44 which are exercised thereby. " 00:26:06.47\00:26:08.95 Verse 12... "Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down 00:26:08.98\00:26:12.26 and the feeble knees; And make straight paths 00:26:12.29\00:26:15.51 for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way 00:26:15.54\00:26:19.72 but let it rather be healed. " 00:26:19.75\00:26:22.27 What Paul is saying is... as a result of this grievous 00:26:22.30\00:26:25.09 experience, you can get straight paths for your feet, 00:26:25.10\00:26:29.49 end up living a new life, incorporating new lifestyle 00:26:29.52\00:26:32.65 habits that can make your life much better than it was 00:26:32.68\00:26:35.58 BEFORE you were depressed. 00:26:35.59\00:26:37.40 And that's what scores of our 00:26:37.43\00:26:38.98 depressed patients are telling us. 00:26:39.01\00:26:41.90 And, before we close, I would like to go into the 20-week cure 00:26:41.93\00:26:47.56 that we present in our book for depression. 00:26:47.59\00:26:51.24 What we do is we take a look at the 10 hit categories 00:26:51.27\00:26:54.49 that were shown at the beginning of this program... 00:26:54.52\00:26:57.02 And we actually work on one hit category at a time. 00:26:57.05\00:27:01.52 If there's an addiction hit category, 00:27:01.55\00:27:03.84 we'll work on that first. 00:27:03.87\00:27:04.96 The nutrition hits are reserved for the 2nd or the 3rd month. 00:27:04.99\00:27:08.71 And we get down to as close to zero hit categories as we can 00:27:08.74\00:27:12.54 and then medication withdrawal starts. 00:27:12.57\00:27:15.55 If they're on a medication that's difficult to 00:27:15.58\00:27:17.75 withdraw from, we tend to switch them over 00:27:17.78\00:27:19.61 to one called "Prozac" 00:27:19.64\00:27:20.98 That one is much easier to get off of. 00:27:21.01\00:27:23.18 And then usually within 2 weeks to a month's time, 00:27:23.21\00:27:26.08 the individual is off the medication, and actually 00:27:26.11\00:27:29.21 feeling much better than they did BEFORE they were depressed 00:27:29.24\00:27:33.36 and certainly much better than they did while they 00:27:33.39\00:27:35.58 were taking the medication. 00:27:35.61\00:27:38.32 There IS indeed good news for those that are depressed. 00:27:38.33\00:27:42.03 There is a way out of depression. 00:27:42.06\00:27:45.33 And that way out includes finding the cause of depression. 00:27:45.36\00:27:49.74 And also includes incorporating the lifestyle that can overcome 00:27:49.75\00:27:54.93 this disease and actually cure it. 00:27:54.97\00:27:57.00
