Hello and welcome to this segment of "Wonderfully Made" 00:00:57.09\00:01:01.62 Today, we are going to be discussing the very common 00:01:01.65\00:01:05.68 disease of depression. 00:01:05.71\00:01:08.03 And going into the way out of this disease. 00:01:08.06\00:01:11.88 If someone is diagnosed with depression, 00:01:11.91\00:01:13.78 that does not really give any indication of the cause 00:01:13.79\00:01:17.35 of the disease. 00:01:17.38\00:01:18.59 It's not just as simple as prescribing a drug, 00:01:18.60\00:01:21.87 and referring someone to counseling to get rid 00:01:21.90\00:01:24.69 of this disease if we're going to have a lasting cure. 00:01:24.72\00:01:28.47 We really need to take a look at the causes of depression 00:01:28.50\00:01:34.24 Now, there are many causes of depression. 00:01:34.27\00:01:36.58 Actually, we could discuss over a 100 causes 00:01:36.61\00:01:40.53 if we had enough time here today. 00:01:40.56\00:01:42.74 But, even if we were to discuss cause #99 and cause #100, 00:01:42.77\00:01:49.05 it would fit under 1 of 10 hit categories. 00:01:49.08\00:01:53.89 And actually, what we have discovered is that 00:01:53.92\00:01:57.03 the brain is very resilient. 00:01:57.06\00:01:58.81 It can recover from one major hit, or 2 major hits, 00:01:58.84\00:02:02.18 of 3 major blows, but once a 4th blow occurs, 00:02:02.21\00:02:06.20 depression then tends to set in. 00:02:06.23\00:02:09.05 And so, I'd like to show you just briefly before we deal with 00:02:09.08\00:02:13.65 some of these hits in detail, the 10 major hits 00:02:13.68\00:02:18.05 that can cause depression. 00:02:18.08\00:02:20.73 You will see the following... 00:02:20.76\00:02:21.83 If anyone has a combination 00:02:47.29\00:02:49.40 of 4 of those hit categories involved, 00:02:49.43\00:02:53.66 they are going to very likely suffer from the 00:02:53.69\00:02:57.07 disease of major depression. 00:02:57.10\00:02:59.52 Well, I'd like to discuss in detail 00:02:59.55\00:03:03.32 items 3 and onward in this list... 00:03:03.36\00:03:07.38 We have previously discussed in another program 00:03:07.41\00:03:10.42 the genetic and developmental hits, 00:03:10.46\00:03:12.34 and we've also discussed, to some extent, 00:03:12.38\00:03:14.69 the nutritional hits. 00:03:14.72\00:03:16.22 But I would like to emphasize, in starting this program, 00:03:16.25\00:03:19.71 that we DO need to have enough tryptophan in the diet 00:03:19.74\00:03:23.16 Tryptophan is an amino acid that's found in black-eyed peas, 00:03:23.19\00:03:26.58 and also in tofu, as well as a number of other plant foods 00:03:26.61\00:03:32.87 that are quite high in tryptophan. 00:03:32.90\00:03:34.78 One nurse that was actually a very good friend of mine 00:03:34.81\00:03:38.42 at the hospital... was suffering from depression so severe 00:03:38.45\00:03:42.98 that she ended up with anorexia. 00:03:43.01\00:03:45.34 And, she had seen a psychiatrist and then she also needed 00:03:45.37\00:03:49.13 an internal medicine physician, 00:03:49.16\00:03:50.72 and so the psychiatrist referred her to me, 00:03:50.75\00:03:53.19 particularly to deal with 00:03:53.22\00:03:54.64 nutritional aspect of her illness. 00:03:54.67\00:03:56.72 And we put her on a diet high in tryptophan 00:03:56.75\00:03:59.64 and along with some other treatment measures, 00:03:59.65\00:04:02.19 she DRAMATICALLY improved... 00:04:02.22\00:04:03.87 In fact, she was able to go back to work again... 00:04:03.90\00:04:06.03 She was regaining weight, starting to look good. 00:04:06.06\00:04:08.39 And after several months, she decided to get off 00:04:08.42\00:04:11.58 her tofu and high tryptophan diet... 00:04:11.61\00:04:14.51 and within days, she was feeling very depressed again. 00:04:14.52\00:04:17.91 She was amazed at how much 00:04:17.94\00:04:19.68 diet could play a roll in her disease. 00:04:19.71\00:04:22.40 And so, she went back on the tofu and high tryptophan diet 00:04:22.43\00:04:26.28 and within a few days, she was feeling better again, 00:04:26.29\00:04:29.13 and she hasn't gotten off that diet since. 00:04:29.16\00:04:31.35 Some people need more tryptophan in their diet 00:04:31.38\00:04:34.37 than others do. 00:04:34.40\00:04:35.71 But this underscores the importance of nutrition 00:04:35.74\00:04:39.71 in treating depression... 00:04:39.74\00:04:42.13 and, although not everyone that has depression 00:04:42.16\00:04:45.90 might need to be treated in this manner... 00:04:45.93\00:04:48.44 certainly those that have some 00:04:48.47\00:04:50.57 nutritional deficiencies would need to. 00:04:50.58\00:04:52.82 Now I'd like to share the omega-3 00:04:52.85\00:04:55.85 aspect of nutrition as well... 00:04:55.89\00:04:57.85 And it is important to get enough omega-3 in the diet, 00:04:57.89\00:05:00.95 and for our depressed patients, when we do a diet history 00:05:00.96\00:05:04.71 and we find out they're low in omega-3, 00:05:04.74\00:05:07.00 what we normally prescribe for them is a recipe 00:05:07.03\00:05:10.85 called the "flax nut sprinkle" 00:05:10.88\00:05:13.60 And I'm going to be inviting my wife, Erica, to share 00:05:13.63\00:05:18.52 this very simple, but very tasty recipe... 00:05:18.55\00:05:22.07 By utilizing this recipe, you'll be able to get 10 grams 00:05:22.10\00:05:25.53 of omega-3 fatty acids in your diet, and that really what 00:05:25.56\00:05:28.96 we recommend as a minimum for depressed patients. 00:05:28.99\00:05:31.91 And so, Erica, tell us a little bit about the 00:05:31.92\00:05:35.27 flax nut sprinkle. 00:05:35.30\00:05:36.81 This recipe uses equal amounts of walnuts and flaxseeds 00:05:36.84\00:05:40.78 ground finely into a meal. 00:05:40.79\00:05:43.53 You mix those 2 and you will end up with a sprinkle 00:05:43.56\00:05:48.10 I add a little bit of salt, and a little bit of 00:05:48.11\00:05:51.64 sweetener like brown sugar, or, I prefer, date sugar 00:05:51.67\00:05:56.22 that's just dates ground finely... 00:05:56.25\00:05:58.37 And I like to put those in little containers, 00:05:58.40\00:06:02.64 and you can take it into work, or sprinkle it on top of 00:06:02.65\00:06:06.69 a piece of toast that has a little bit of jam on it. 00:06:06.72\00:06:10.01 Or, you can sprinkle it on top of your cooked cereal 00:06:10.04\00:06:13.31 like oatmeal, or any wheat cereal, and it is a delicious 00:06:13.34\00:06:18.64 sprinkle... very quick. 00:06:18.67\00:06:20.56 I store it in the refrigerator so it doesn't change flavor 00:06:20.57\00:06:24.48 after a period of time, so you can make a whole amount 00:06:24.51\00:06:27.14 ...equal amounts of walnuts and flaxseeds. 00:06:27.17\00:06:32.83 This recipe should be utilized by sprinkling it on something. 00:06:32.86\00:06:38.31 We were in New York recently, after the tragedy, 00:06:39.01\00:06:42.59 and, of course, sharing with them recipes to improve mood... 00:06:42.62\00:06:45.54 And one person did not attend 00:06:45.64\00:06:48.59 the recipe section of the presentation. 00:06:48.62\00:06:51.22 And, she got her sample of the flax nut sprinkle, 00:06:51.25\00:06:55.23 and actually tried to gulp it down 00:06:55.26\00:06:59.30 without putting it on anything, and of course, 00:06:59.33\00:07:02.20 that was a little dangerous because it does have some 00:07:02.24\00:07:04.23 powdery substances to it... 00:07:04.26\00:07:06.03 And she told us, "Boy, that tastes good, but how in the 00:07:06.06\00:07:08.92 world do you eat it?" 00:07:08.95\00:07:10.05 Well, you do need to sprinkle it on cereal or on toast, 00:07:10.08\00:07:13.68 or something of that nature. 00:07:13.71\00:07:16.47 Also very important in the nutritional component 00:07:16.50\00:07:22.34 of depression is getting enough folic acid in the diet. 00:07:22.37\00:07:26.31 The U.S. Government has actually targeted 00:07:26.34\00:07:30.52 folic acid as being a VERY important nutrient 00:07:30.55\00:07:34.86 that is LACKING in many Americans. 00:07:34.89\00:07:37.21 Now you might have been familiar 00:07:37.24\00:07:38.80 with low folic acid causing problems with birth defects, 00:07:38.83\00:07:45.15 which it certainly can. 00:07:45.18\00:07:46.81 But it also can cause depression. 00:07:46.84\00:07:49.52 In fact, studies tell us that if you're depressed because 00:07:49.55\00:07:52.39 you don't have enough folic acid in your diet, 00:07:52.42\00:07:55.19 you will NOT respond to medications. 00:07:55.22\00:07:57.09 You can try Prozac... you can try all the medications known 00:07:57.12\00:08:00.63 and you're really not going to get any better UNLESS you get 00:08:00.66\00:08:04.33 on a diet that is high in folic acid. 00:08:04.36\00:08:06.86 Now the average American needs 400 mcg of folic acid a day 00:08:06.89\00:08:13.46 And we have found that those that are susceptible actually 00:08:13.49\00:08:17.07 respond better to 1000 micrograms 00:08:17.10\00:08:19.67 of folic acid a day. 00:08:19.70\00:08:21.38 And I'd like to just mention some of the foods that are 00:08:21.41\00:08:24.21 high in folic acid... 00:08:24.22\00:08:25.37 Animal foods tend to be VERY low in folic acid. 00:08:25.40\00:08:28.23 This is one of the reasons why the average American 00:08:28.26\00:08:30.41 tends not to get enough. 00:08:30.44\00:08:31.77 You just can't get enough folic acid from a 00:08:31.80\00:08:34.19 meat and potato diet and a high animal food diet. 00:08:34.22\00:08:37.00 Now beef will have 16 micrograms for a very large serving 00:08:37.03\00:08:41.09 but you'd have to eat a huge amount of beef in order 00:08:41.12\00:08:44.37 to be able to get that 400 micrograms a day. 00:08:44.40\00:08:46.63 It's much better to get it from the plant sources. 00:08:46.66\00:08:49.29 And I will just go over the top 5 sources of folic acid. 00:08:49.30\00:08:54.48 #5 on the list is spinach... 00:08:54.51\00:08:56.76 It's one of the reasons why your mother told you to 00:08:56.79\00:08:59.73 eat your spinach... 00:08:59.76\00:09:00.94 It is high in folic acid. 00:09:00.97\00:09:02.50 It's also high in omega-3 fatty acids. 00:09:02.53\00:09:04.97 #4... Navy beans 00:09:05.00\00:09:06.99 Navy beans are an excellent source. 00:09:07.02\00:09:09.12 One serving will have 255 mcg... 00:09:09.15\00:09:11.87 So you almost have the entire 400 mcg set there. 00:09:11.90\00:09:15.49 Okra is even higher yet! 00:09:15.52\00:09:18.25 That's the #3 source. 00:09:18.28\00:09:19.49 One serving of okra will have 269 mcg of folic acid, 00:09:19.52\00:09:24.70 and that's good news, especially for those of us 00:09:24.73\00:09:27.97 who live in Oklahoma, like myself... 00:09:28.00\00:09:30.05 We call this O-k-ra... 00:09:30.08\00:09:31.90 It grows abundantly there, and we enjoy our okra 00:09:31.93\00:09:36.70 pretty much year round. 00:09:36.73\00:09:38.90 There is a higher source, though... than okra 00:09:38.93\00:09:42.06 and that is LENTILS! 00:09:42.07\00:09:43.36 1 cup of lentils will have over 800 mcg of folic acid. 00:09:43.39\00:09:48.30 And it's important if you're NOT getting okra 00:09:48.33\00:09:52.14 to maybe consume lentils instead, 00:09:52.17\00:09:54.72 because it's even a higher source. 00:09:54.75\00:09:56.52 And then the ABSOLUTE HIGHEST SOURCE of folic acid... 00:09:56.55\00:09:59.13 are black-eyed peas at least per serving. 00:09:59.16\00:10:02.42 1 cup of black-eyed peas will have 1000 mcg of folic acid 00:10:02.45\00:10:08.67 And so, just one serving of this would be able to produce 00:10:08.68\00:10:12.09 this 1000 mcg amount that we have previously discussed. 00:10:12.10\00:10:17.49 There is another component to nutrition that tends to 00:10:17.52\00:10:20.74 play a role in causing depression, particularly among 00:10:20.77\00:10:23.99 those that are over 50. 00:10:24.02\00:10:26.01 Now the causes I've listed thus far are the 00:10:26.04\00:10:27.97 tryptophan, the omega-3 and the folic acid 00:10:28.00\00:10:30.27 can occur at any age. 00:10:30.30\00:10:31.70 But this causes atherosclerosis where you're not getting 00:10:31.71\00:10:36.53 enough circulation to the brain. 00:10:36.56\00:10:39.68 If you're eating a diet high in cholesterol, 00:10:39.71\00:10:42.72 and high in saturated fat, over the course of years 00:10:42.73\00:10:45.82 your arteries will begin to plug up... 00:10:45.85\00:10:48.25 And they will let less blood through to the brain. 00:10:48.28\00:10:51.41 And if they let less blood into the frontal lobe of the brain, 00:10:51.44\00:10:54.33 or into the emotional areas of the brain, 00:10:54.36\00:10:56.64 depression can come about. 00:10:56.67\00:10:59.47 Now what many people are unaware of is the fact that NOT all 00:10:59.50\00:11:03.70 cholesterol is the same. 00:11:03.73\00:11:06.22 Some types of cholesterol is much more dangerous than others 00:11:06.25\00:11:09.96 Dr. Bruce Taylor found this out in New York, in his research 00:11:09.99\00:11:15.92 He found out that if he fed nonoxidized cholesterol 00:11:15.95\00:11:19.50 that had never been exposed to the air 00:11:19.51\00:11:21.33 to rabbits and monkeys, NONE of them developed 00:11:21.36\00:11:23.97 atherosclerosis. 00:11:23.98\00:11:25.30 But if he fed oxidized cholesterol that had been 00:11:25.33\00:11:28.12 readily exposed to the air, the longer the time period 00:11:28.13\00:11:32.07 that it HAD been exposed to the air, 00:11:32.10\00:11:33.54 there were toxic... what we call oxidized cholesterol particles 00:11:33.57\00:11:37.16 that would cause damage to the arteries within 24 hours of 00:11:37.19\00:11:40.55 consumption. 00:11:40.58\00:11:42.12 These results are pretty dramatic, and actually 00:11:42.15\00:11:45.99 there are many studies indicating the same thing 00:11:46.02\00:11:48.02 is true for human beings as well. 00:11:48.05\00:11:51.12 You might wonder which foods are the highest 00:11:51.15\00:11:53.62 in oxidized cholesterol... 00:11:53.65\00:11:55.56 And unfortunately, for many Americans... CUSTARDS 00:11:55.59\00:11:59.80 are the #1 cause of oxidized cholesterol. 00:11:59.83\00:12:02.82 In fact, in the rabbits and monkeys, within 24 hours 00:12:02.85\00:12:05.81 of eating custards, they had some actual big necrotic 00:12:05.84\00:12:09.08 areas in their arteries, and of course, that brings the 00:12:09.11\00:12:12.61 setup for those arteries to eventually getting blocked. 00:12:12.64\00:12:16.32 The most famous custards of course are made out of 00:12:16.35\00:12:18.90 sugar and eggs and milk... 00:12:18.93\00:12:21.39 And the most commonly consumed custard in America 00:12:21.42\00:12:24.03 is ICE CREAM! 00:12:24.04\00:12:26.22 And so I would encourage you to consider nonoxidized 00:12:26.25\00:12:31.46 cholesterol ice cream, and you can actually 00:12:31.49\00:12:34.45 find this in health food stores, and even in major 00:12:34.48\00:12:36.85 grocery stores today... where it 00:12:36.88\00:12:38.92 doesn't have the cholesterol in it. 00:12:38.95\00:12:42.85 The #2 highest source of oxidized cholesterol 00:12:42.88\00:12:48.45 was pancake mix. 00:12:48.46\00:12:50.18 Eggs are loaded with cholesterol and if you take the yoke 00:12:50.21\00:12:52.98 and you powder it up, like pancake mix is... 00:12:53.01\00:12:55.55 It is going to be pretty toxic to the arteries. 00:12:55.56\00:12:58.74 And the third highest toxic form of cholesterol 00:12:58.77\00:13:02.68 was parmesan cheese. 00:13:02.71\00:13:04.11 That is a powdery cheese, and that was as bad as LARD 00:13:04.14\00:13:08.49 as far as the arteries are concerned. 00:13:08.52\00:13:11.37 I bring these points up to you to encourage you to get on 00:13:11.40\00:13:15.51 a diet that is lower in cholesterol, 00:13:15.54\00:13:17.76 lower in saturated fat particularly encouraging 00:13:17.79\00:13:21.85 the nonoxidized cholesterol and that way you can keep 00:13:21.88\00:13:26.28 those arteries opened for a long period of time 00:13:26.29\00:13:28.24 and you don't HAVE to get depressed when you get older. 00:13:28.27\00:13:31.67 Many people think it's going to be inevitable as you age, 00:13:31.70\00:13:35.21 that you will get depressed, but it does NOT have to be 00:13:35.24\00:13:38.33 inevitable... 00:13:38.36\00:13:42.08 It's also important to get enough B vitamins in the diet 00:13:42.11\00:13:45.25 to get enough of the vitamin B12 and other nutrients 00:13:45.28\00:13:49.71 and one study actually indicated that the majority 00:13:49.74\00:13:53.95 of depressed patients actually had a LACK, 00:13:53.96\00:13:58.74 or a significant lack of at least 1 vitamin, 00:13:58.77\00:14:02.60 or even more nutrients... 00:14:02.63\00:14:04.92 And that means LESS than what the RDA recommends. 00:14:04.95\00:14:09.43 And so it is important to BE on a balanced diet 00:14:09.46\00:14:11.91 to be GETTING enough of the vitamins and nutrients 00:14:11.94\00:14:14.23 in order to avoid this disease. 00:14:14.26\00:14:16.32 And unfortunately, many people, when they are depressed, 00:14:16.35\00:14:20.10 get anorexic, and stop eating as much, 00:14:20.11\00:14:23.29 and that also can short them in regards to getting 00:14:23.32\00:14:26.89 on to the recovery process as far as the diet is concerned. 00:14:26.92\00:14:32.42 Well the 4th hit category that I would like to discuss 00:14:32.46\00:14:36.66 today are the social hits. 00:14:36.69\00:14:40.20 This is something that most psychiatrists and 00:14:40.23\00:14:42.89 and psychologists are quite aware of... 00:14:42.93\00:14:44.39 They're aware of the genetic and the social... 00:14:44.42\00:14:46.44 They tend not to focus in on the other 8 hit categories 00:14:46.47\00:14:49.81 that we've mentioned here today. 00:14:49.84\00:14:52.27 But in the social hit categories it's very important 00:14:52.30\00:14:55.53 to understand that if you have absence of social support, 00:14:55.56\00:15:00.08 you will be at a MARKED increased risk of depression 00:15:00.11\00:15:02.87 and you would qualify for that hit. 00:15:02.90\00:15:04.66 Individuals who are loners who don't get along 00:15:04.69\00:15:07.73 with others who are not involved in a 00:15:07.76\00:15:10.29 team-type ministry or approach 00:15:10.32\00:15:13.46 do have an increased risk of depression... 00:15:13.49\00:15:15.61 And if you happen to be one that recognizes that you 00:15:15.64\00:15:18.45 don't' have much social support, I would encourage you 00:15:18.48\00:15:22.07 to get involved in a project where you're helping others 00:15:22.10\00:15:25.58 and where you can have a team approach 00:15:25.61\00:15:27.52 in actually doing something that is respectful to man 00:15:27.53\00:15:32.25 and can help another individual or a group of individuals. 00:15:32.28\00:15:37.14 This can actually IMPROVE the mental health significantly. 00:15:37.17\00:15:42.07 Other causes of having the social hit is a 00:15:42.10\00:15:49.52 negative stressful life event. 00:15:49.55\00:15:53.10 Of course something that happened like at the 00:15:53.13\00:15:54.98 World Trade Center would qualify for that... 00:15:55.01\00:15:56.95 a very negative stressful life event... 00:15:56.98\00:15:59.29 But that doesn't need to necessarily cause depression 00:15:59.32\00:16:02.99 As we mentioned, there are many other hits, 00:16:03.02\00:16:04.78 and it takes 4 hits to cause depression. 00:16:04.81\00:16:06.82 If you've suffered a critical loss THAT will occur. 00:16:06.85\00:16:10.11 Another area of social hits are 00:16:10.14\00:16:12.54 grandparents who are raising their grandchildren. 00:16:12.57\00:16:16.03 It's actually the grandparents who are at the increased risk 00:16:16.06\00:16:20.26 of developing depression... 00:16:20.29\00:16:22.54 And although that may be the best caregiver for the child, 00:16:22.57\00:16:25.84 because the parents are either not adequately able to 00:16:25.87\00:16:30.00 raise their children, or they're not available... 00:16:30.03\00:16:33.00 it does play a toll on the grandparents... 00:16:33.03\00:16:36.07 And studies tell us that grandparents who are 00:16:36.10\00:16:38.52 raising their grandchildren qualify 00:16:38.55\00:16:40.47 as having that social hit that can produce depression. 00:16:40.50\00:16:45.80 Another hit is if you have an immediate family member 00:16:45.83\00:16:49.78 who is an alcoholic, or a drug addict that would also 00:16:49.81\00:16:53.49 qualify you for the social hit, 00:16:53.52\00:16:55.60 and that should also encourage you to 00:16:55.63\00:16:57.57 try to get help for them. 00:16:57.58\00:17:00.29 Many times there are codependents who actually 00:17:00.32\00:17:03.90 assist in ways that they're not even 00:17:03.91\00:17:06.42 realizing these addictive habits, 00:17:06.45\00:17:08.56 and sometimes it's good to have a conference of 00:17:08.59\00:17:10.78 concerned people come in, and actually impress 00:17:10.81\00:17:13.47 upon the individual the NEED to get help... 00:17:13.50\00:17:15.85 And that can actually help you out as well. 00:17:15.88\00:17:18.39 The 5th area... 5th hit category are 00:17:18.42\00:17:22.41 the toxic hits. 00:17:22.44\00:17:24.15 These toxic hits include having too much lead in the system... 00:17:24.18\00:17:29.45 And we used to think of lead being a paint problem 00:17:29.48\00:17:33.71 but most paint today does not 00:17:33.74\00:17:36.62 have lead in it... in fact, any new paint sold 00:17:36.65\00:17:38.46 should NOT have any lead, and it would be the old paint 00:17:38.49\00:17:40.68 The battery manufacturing business certainly is an area 00:17:40.71\00:17:44.92 where you can get high amounts of lead. 00:17:44.93\00:17:46.50 Some drinking water can be contaminated with lead. 00:17:46.53\00:17:49.06 Dust or dirt has lead in it. 00:17:49.09\00:17:51.85 And there's a tremendous amount of lead in lower Manhattan now 00:17:51.86\00:17:56.26 as a result of the World Trade Center attack. 00:17:56.29\00:17:59.08 Too much lead in the system can cause depression, 00:17:59.11\00:18:01.73 and can cause this toxic hit. 00:18:01.76\00:18:03.45 Too much mercury in the system can also cause it. 00:18:03.48\00:18:06.14 Mercury... the highest known source 00:18:06.17\00:18:09.19 of mercury contamination is fish. 00:18:09.22\00:18:11.55 ...100 years ago, fish was a very healthy food to consume. 00:18:11.58\00:18:15.35 However, today in our industrial society, 00:18:15.38\00:18:18.29 the EPA has gone on record that you'll get your highest 00:18:18.32\00:18:22.18 pesticide consumption, and you'll get your highest 00:18:22.21\00:18:25.20 TOXIC consumption by consuming fish. 00:18:25.23\00:18:28.29 And that is because whatever the water the fish are 00:18:28.32\00:18:32.57 swimming in, if there's even small amounts of toxins, 00:18:32.60\00:18:35.75 it can be concentrated a thousand or a million fold 00:18:35.78\00:18:39.06 in those fish. 00:18:39.09\00:18:41.03 Some creams that come... for instance one cream 00:18:41.06\00:18:43.74 that was used for facial wrinkles in Mexico 00:18:43.77\00:18:46.98 caused mercury poisoning because of the mercury 00:18:47.02\00:18:50.20 that was in there. 00:18:50.21\00:18:51.84 And also some herbs made from China or India 00:18:51.87\00:18:56.67 can have some mercury in it, and some of these 00:18:56.70\00:18:59.74 have even been sold in America and have been found 00:18:59.77\00:19:01.89 to be the cause of mercury toxicity. 00:19:01.92\00:19:04.84 Having too much arsenic in the system, too much bismuth... 00:19:04.87\00:19:07.76 You can get bismuth from consuming too much Pepto-Bismol 00:19:07.79\00:19:10.71 ...that can cause a problem with depression. 00:19:10.74\00:19:13.24 And then, of course, there are other toxins in our society 00:19:13.27\00:19:15.73 as well that we may need to consider in some individuals. 00:19:15.76\00:19:20.18 The 6th hit category are the circadian rhythm hits. 00:19:20.21\00:19:23.41 The circadian rhythm hits mean our daily schedule... 00:19:23.42\00:19:27.96 and you would qualify for having that hit if you do not 00:19:27.97\00:19:30.86 have adequate sleep. 00:19:30.89\00:19:33.57 If you're not getting at least 6 hours of sleep 00:19:33.60\00:19:36.56 on a daily basis, you would qualify for having that hit... 00:19:36.59\00:19:40.08 In fact, most individuals need between 7 and 8, 00:19:40.11\00:19:42.97 but there are some people that can get by with 6. 00:19:43.00\00:19:45.98 Or if you're getting more than 9 hours of sleep per day... 00:19:46.01\00:19:48.84 you would qualify for having the circadian rhythm hit. 00:19:48.87\00:19:52.08 If you're on shift work where you change your shift 00:19:52.11\00:19:56.50 every month from working from days to midnights 00:19:56.53\00:19:59.31 or something like that. 00:19:59.32\00:20:00.41 There are many factories in America that have 00:20:00.44\00:20:03.24 mandatory shift work... 00:20:03.25\00:20:04.44 That would qualify you for having the circadian rhythm hit. 00:20:04.47\00:20:07.76 Or if you're not having regular hours for sleeping and eating. 00:20:07.79\00:20:11.28 And many Americans do not have regular hours for that 00:20:11.31\00:20:14.66 because of what's called "weekends" 00:20:14.69\00:20:16.85 And that's when they get off their schedule 00:20:16.88\00:20:19.01 as far as eating and sleeping are concerned, 00:20:19.04\00:20:21.01 and then they wonder why they're having a blue Monday 00:20:21.04\00:20:23.37 It's actually better to stay on the schedule... 00:20:23.40\00:20:26.21 the same schedule that you're on during the week 00:20:26.24\00:20:28.30 even though you're doing something different as far as 00:20:28.33\00:20:30.28 eating and sleeping is concerned you can be much more 00:20:30.29\00:20:33.12 efficient in your sleep that way, 00:20:33.15\00:20:34.89 and you can also be much more efficient in your 00:20:34.92\00:20:37.72 digestive process 00:20:37.75\00:20:39.89 ...and so that's certainly something to consider. 00:20:39.92\00:20:42.75 The 7th hit category is addiction hits. 00:20:42.78\00:20:46.40 And it is important to recognize that those 00:20:46.43\00:20:49.58 that are addicted to alcohol... 00:20:49.59\00:20:50.97 those that are addicted to marijuana... 00:20:50.98\00:20:52.75 those that are drinking high amounts of caffeine, 00:20:52.78\00:20:55.39 and that would be like 9 to 10 cups of coffee 00:20:55.42\00:20:57.68 per day, or equivalent as far as Dr. Peppers, 00:20:57.71\00:21:00.88 or sodas that have caffeine in them... 00:21:00.91\00:21:04.43 These individuals have an addiction hit, 00:21:04.46\00:21:07.02 and that means that they are at an increased risk 00:21:07.05\00:21:09.37 of developing depression. 00:21:09.40\00:21:11.42 Illicit drug users... those that are using the 00:21:11.45\00:21:13.55 amphetamines and the cocaine, etcetera, will certainly be 00:21:13.58\00:21:17.16 at an increased risk for this hit. 00:21:17.19\00:21:19.64 And we actually recommend, if you have an addiction hit, 00:21:19.67\00:21:22.25 this is the first hit you ought to focus in on 00:21:22.28\00:21:25.34 in getting your life free of those addictions... 00:21:25.37\00:21:29.27 And it's actually better to take care of those 00:21:29.30\00:21:31.19 addictions all at the same time. 00:21:31.22\00:21:33.36 We have shown this at studies at the 00:21:33.39\00:21:35.37 Lifestyle Center of America, and at other studies as well 00:21:35.40\00:21:38.27 and usually within a month, if you're on a good 00:21:38.30\00:21:40.87 treatment program, you're going to be over that addiction 00:21:40.90\00:21:43.28 process... you'll still have to maintain vigilance, 00:21:43.31\00:21:46.55 but that's the first hit category that you ought to 00:21:46.58\00:21:49.10 focus in on if, indeed, an addiction is occurring. 00:21:49.13\00:21:53.37 The 8th area is the lifestyle hits... 00:21:53.40\00:21:56.10 And by lifestyle hits, we're talking about not being 00:21:56.13\00:22:00.75 on a regular exercise program. 00:22:00.78\00:22:02.81 That would qualify for having a lifestyle hit. 00:22:02.84\00:22:06.03 It's amazing how people who exercise regularly 00:22:06.06\00:22:08.89 and aerobically RARELY suffer from depression. 00:22:08.92\00:22:11.74 And they, of course, can too if they have 4 of those other hits 00:22:11.77\00:22:15.83 But the exercise can PREVENT them from actually suffering 00:22:15.84\00:22:20.85 FROM some of the other hits that they may have on board. 00:22:20.88\00:22:24.47 And so, we recommend a regular aerobic exercise program. 00:22:24.50\00:22:28.92 Not regularly being exposed to daylight for at least 00:22:28.95\00:22:31.56 30 minutes a day will also qualify as a lifestyle hit. 00:22:31.59\00:22:35.09 And this is something that is commonplace in our society today 00:22:35.12\00:22:39.99 Most people work indoors, 00:22:40.03\00:22:41.96 and particularly in the winter months, 00:22:41.99\00:22:43.91 they're traveling sometimes to work when it's still dark, 00:22:43.95\00:22:48.84 or the sun isn't far enough up to be able to get serotonin 00:22:48.87\00:22:52.39 and they're going to bed... 00:22:52.42\00:22:53.61 Or, actually they're not going to bed, but they're going home 00:22:53.64\00:22:56.27 from work when it's still dark as well. 00:22:56.30\00:22:58.01 And that will set them up with not getting enough 00:22:58.02\00:23:01.39 serotonin EVEN if they're getting enough 00:23:01.42\00:23:03.12 tryptophan in their diet. 00:23:03.15\00:23:04.46 Tryptophan has turned into serotonin, but you need to 00:23:04.49\00:23:07.81 have daylight in order for this to occur. 00:23:07.84\00:23:10.70 Now, it doesn't have to be a bright shiny day, 00:23:10.73\00:23:13.60 just in cloud cover anywhere between like 00:23:13.63\00:23:16.19 10 o'clock in the morning, and 3 o'clock in the afternoon 00:23:16.22\00:23:19.18 for 30 minutes would get enough light 00:23:19.21\00:23:22.21 through the eyes for the brain to be able to synthesize 00:23:22.24\00:23:25.13 serotonin from tryptophan. 00:23:25.16\00:23:26.73 But it is important to get some outdoor daylight, 00:23:26.76\00:23:30.35 and we recommend that on a daily basis... 00:23:30.38\00:23:32.25 because all of us would do better with enough serotonin 00:23:32.28\00:23:35.38 on a daily basis. 00:23:35.41\00:23:36.96 Rarely breathing fresh air would also qualify for having a 00:23:36.99\00:23:41.05 lifestyle hit, and there are some people, 00:23:41.08\00:23:43.07 particularly the ones that we met in downtown 00:23:43.10\00:23:46.32 lower Manhattan as part of our seminar. 00:23:46.35\00:23:48.98 Many of these people were NOT getting daily fresh air. 00:23:49.01\00:23:51.92 They had these things on their faces to try to filter the air 00:23:51.95\00:23:56.55 from the lead, etcetera, but it still wasn't really fresh air 00:23:56.58\00:23:59.81 And those people would qualify for having the lifestyle hit 00:23:59.84\00:24:05.34 It's good to be in an environment where you 00:24:05.37\00:24:07.65 can get some good fresh air at least the majority of the time. 00:24:07.68\00:24:12.25 Then there are medical problems that cause depression. 00:24:12.28\00:24:16.12 And those medical hits are common in some sectors 00:24:16.15\00:24:21.28 of our society. 00:24:21.31\00:24:22.38 What type of medical diseases would qualify you for having 00:24:22.39\00:24:26.28 a medical hit? 00:24:26.31\00:24:27.76 Hepatitis C... very common in our society. 00:24:27.79\00:24:31.22 Hepatitis C can actually bring about depression. 00:24:31.25\00:24:35.15 People with that disease are 4 times as likely 00:24:35.18\00:24:38.01 to develop depression. 00:24:38.04\00:24:39.74 If you've had a recent head injury or concussion, 00:24:39.77\00:24:42.36 that can also bring about depression... 00:24:42.39\00:24:44.73 And this is why it's even important to NOT participate 00:24:44.76\00:24:48.17 in certain sports where you have the high risk of concussion 00:24:48.21\00:24:51.05 The "Journal of the American Medical Association" recently 00:24:51.08\00:24:54.45 reported that if you have suffered more than 2 concussions 00:24:54.48\00:24:56.98 you're at a marked increased risk of developing
