00:01:05.69\00:01:07.36 Do you want to experience Christ's deliverance? 00:01:07.40\00:01:10.90 And maybe you have already experienced His deliverance, 00:01:10.93\00:01:14.57 and God wants you to extend that promise 00:01:14.60\00:01:17.37 of deliverance to someone else. 00:01:17.41\00:01:20.18 Our scripture is John 8:36. 00:01:20.21\00:01:24.51 I love this reference. 00:01:24.55\00:01:25.95 John 8:36, "If the Son makes you free, 00:01:25.98\00:01:30.32 you shall be free indeed." 00:01:30.35\00:01:31.85 Let's pray. 00:01:31.89\00:01:33.22 Holy Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus. 00:01:33.25\00:01:35.19 This is Your time, 00:01:35.22\00:01:37.23 we ask that Your Word which is already anointed 00:01:37.26\00:01:40.43 and inspired would come alive in our hearts and minds. 00:01:40.46\00:01:44.20 We ask for the outpouring of Your Holy Spirit, 00:01:44.23\00:01:47.47 and that You would set us free. 00:01:47.50\00:01:52.37 And we thank You in Jesus' name. 00:01:52.41\00:01:55.08 Amen. 00:01:55.11\00:01:57.41 There was a Chinese farmer who was... 00:01:57.45\00:02:00.42 This was several years ago, and he lived in mainland China, 00:02:00.45\00:02:03.82 inland China in one of those little villages. 00:02:03.85\00:02:06.22 And one day, he walked along ways, 00:02:06.25\00:02:09.49 and he ended up at the clinic. 00:02:09.52\00:02:12.09 This was a clinic run by Christians. 00:02:12.13\00:02:14.76 And he walked in and he said, "I'm blind and I can't see it. 00:02:14.80\00:02:19.20 I don't know what's wrong with me." 00:02:19.23\00:02:22.44 And they took a look at him and decided he had cataracts. 00:02:22.47\00:02:26.27 And they performed cataract surgery, 00:02:26.31\00:02:28.68 and all of a sudden, he could see. 00:02:28.71\00:02:31.11 Well, a couple days went by and a couple of weeks. 00:02:31.15\00:02:34.88 And then all of a sudden, 00:02:34.92\00:02:36.25 the people at the mission clinic looked out 00:02:36.28\00:02:38.89 the front door one morning and here came the man 00:02:38.92\00:02:41.66 that used to be blind, walking, 00:02:41.69\00:02:44.66 holding a very long rope. 00:02:44.69\00:02:48.03 There were probably a couple dozen people, 00:02:48.06\00:02:52.33 blind people holding on to the rope 00:02:52.37\00:02:55.17 because they couldn't see and they didn't know 00:02:55.20\00:02:57.21 where they were going. 00:02:57.24\00:02:58.57 This man who used to be blind wanted all of his friends, 00:02:58.61\00:03:02.94 all of his neighbors, all of the people that he knew 00:03:02.98\00:03:06.31 had struggled with the same affliction he had, 00:03:06.35\00:03:09.28 dealt with the same issue he had. 00:03:09.32\00:03:11.92 He wanted them to experience healing too. 00:03:11.95\00:03:15.92 If you have ever experienced healing, 00:03:15.96\00:03:19.26 if you have ever experienced deliverance, 00:03:19.29\00:03:22.43 then you want to pass that on to someone else. 00:03:22.46\00:03:25.10 You want to tell someone else, what you have experienced. 00:03:25.13\00:03:28.64 That's what we see in our story today. 00:03:28.67\00:03:30.04 We see a man who was in the tombs, 00:03:30.07\00:03:32.67 a man who was lost, a man who needed deliverance, 00:03:32.71\00:03:36.28 a man who was inhabited by thousands of demons, 00:03:36.31\00:03:40.15 and yet Jesus came to set him free. 00:03:40.18\00:03:43.08 This is a story, of course, of the demoniacs. 00:03:43.12\00:03:45.69 And we find this in the Book of Matthew, 00:03:45.72\00:03:47.76 Mark, and Luke. 00:03:47.79\00:03:49.32 But before we get to that story and the 14 takeaways, 00:03:49.36\00:03:53.73 yes, you heard me right, 14 takeaways of deliverance 00:03:53.76\00:03:57.40 that we can find from the story of the demoniacs. 00:03:57.43\00:04:00.67 Before we get to that, let's look at the prologue. 00:04:00.70\00:04:03.41 Remember, Jesus had to cross the Sea of Galilee 00:04:03.44\00:04:06.74 from the western side over to the eastern side of the sea. 00:04:06.78\00:04:10.35 And that sea is beautiful. 00:04:10.38\00:04:11.71 Greg and I several years ago 00:04:11.75\00:04:13.21 had the opportunity to go to Israel, 00:04:13.25\00:04:14.92 and it is incredible. 00:04:14.95\00:04:16.69 The sea is calm, and it's beautiful. 00:04:16.72\00:04:18.95 But when the wind comes, and when the storms arise, 00:04:18.99\00:04:23.32 it can be whipped up to a foment. 00:04:23.36\00:04:26.36 And that is what happened. 00:04:26.39\00:04:27.73 We see the story of the disciples 00:04:27.76\00:04:29.83 crossing the sea with Jesus and Jesus arising, 00:04:29.86\00:04:33.37 and what does He say? 00:04:33.40\00:04:34.74 "Peace, be still." 00:04:34.77\00:04:37.67 Now in the Greek, it's even more forceful. 00:04:37.71\00:04:39.64 It's a command. 00:04:39.67\00:04:41.01 He's not just saying, "Peace, be still." 00:04:41.04\00:04:43.58 It's a command. 00:04:43.61\00:04:44.95 And He says, basically, shut up, be calm, 00:04:44.98\00:04:50.69 and instantly the sea became calm. 00:04:50.72\00:04:54.39 You see, this miracle demonstrated Jesus' 00:04:54.42\00:04:56.49 authority over nature. 00:04:56.52\00:04:58.76 The next miracle is going to demonstrate His authority 00:04:58.79\00:05:02.33 over Satan himself. 00:05:02.36\00:05:04.80 This miracle we see Jesus' ability to tame the wild sea. 00:05:04.83\00:05:09.30 The next miracle, we see Jesus' ability to tame the wild man. 00:05:09.34\00:05:14.51 This miracle we see Christ giving peace in the midst 00:05:14.54\00:05:18.38 of a storm. 00:05:18.41\00:05:19.98 And the next miracle 00:05:20.02\00:05:21.35 we see Christ giving peace in a soul. 00:05:21.38\00:05:25.89 Before we actually unpack the story of the demoniacs, 00:05:25.92\00:05:30.26 I want to look just a moment at the integrity 00:05:30.29\00:05:32.19 of the Synoptic Gospels. 00:05:32.23\00:05:33.60 You know the Synoptic Gospels are Matthew, Mark, 00:05:33.63\00:05:36.87 Luke, and John. 00:05:36.90\00:05:39.13 They all tell the story of the demon-possessed man. 00:05:39.17\00:05:42.40 But yet there seems to be an apparent contradiction 00:05:42.44\00:05:45.57 in this story. 00:05:45.61\00:05:46.94 And what is that? 00:05:46.98\00:05:48.31 Matthew says that there are two demoniacs. 00:05:48.34\00:05:51.08 But Mark and Luke only mentioned one demoniac. 00:05:51.11\00:05:55.55 And critics of the Word of God have taken 00:05:55.58\00:05:58.85 that apparent disparity. 00:05:58.89\00:06:00.82 And they have said, 00:06:00.86\00:06:02.19 "Well, that proves that the Bible is uninspired. 00:06:02.22\00:06:03.83 Why in the world would Matthew say there's two, 00:06:03.86\00:06:05.99 when Mark and Luke say there is only one." 00:06:06.03\00:06:09.36 I would submit to you that the apparent contradictions 00:06:09.40\00:06:12.93 actually authenticate 00:06:12.97\00:06:15.10 the validity of the historical story. 00:06:15.14\00:06:17.77 Each author would have remembered the story 00:06:17.81\00:06:20.11 just a little differently. 00:06:20.14\00:06:22.11 Each author would have focused on a different portion 00:06:22.14\00:06:25.35 of the story. 00:06:25.38\00:06:27.08 You know, if they had forged the account, 00:06:27.12\00:06:29.42 if they had said, okay, Matthew, Mark, Luke, 00:06:29.45\00:06:31.69 they're going to get together, 00:06:31.72\00:06:33.25 and they're going to see what is actually accurate. 00:06:33.29\00:06:35.46 And they're going to try to forge the gospel account, 00:06:35.49\00:06:38.89 they would have compared notes. 00:06:38.93\00:06:40.36 And they would have said, I'm going to say one, 00:06:40.40\00:06:42.30 well, you better say one person as well. 00:06:42.33\00:06:46.20 Only Matthew would have actually been there. 00:06:46.23\00:06:48.44 Remember, Mark was written by John Mark, 00:06:48.47\00:06:51.84 which would have been dictated by Peter, 00:06:51.87\00:06:53.51 but it was written by John Mark. 00:06:53.54\00:06:54.88 And Luke, of course, was written by Luke, 00:06:54.91\00:06:57.01 the Gentile doctor. 00:06:57.05\00:06:58.98 You know, it's kind of like if you are a witness 00:06:59.01\00:07:00.62 to an accident, and say, 00:07:00.65\00:07:03.92 the accident happened here 00:07:03.95\00:07:05.55 in the middle of the intersection. 00:07:05.59\00:07:06.92 We pretend our lectern is the middle of the intersection. 00:07:06.96\00:07:09.32 And I'm over here on this side, 00:07:09.36\00:07:11.99 and I saw the accident and I said, 00:07:12.03\00:07:13.73 "There's two people in the car." 00:07:13.76\00:07:15.10 And I was a bystander on the street corner, 00:07:15.13\00:07:17.50 there were definitely two people. 00:07:17.53\00:07:19.13 But somebody over here on this side, 00:07:19.17\00:07:21.87 said, "No, no, no, there were three people in the car. 00:07:21.90\00:07:25.04 I saw that." Now who is true? 00:07:25.07\00:07:27.74 They're both eyewitnesses. 00:07:27.78\00:07:31.01 That word is martus in the Greek, 00:07:31.05\00:07:32.61 we're going to get to that at the end of our story. 00:07:32.65\00:07:35.25 And they're both eyewitnesses 00:07:35.28\00:07:37.49 of something that took place. 00:07:37.52\00:07:39.69 There's no apparent contradiction from this side, 00:07:39.72\00:07:42.56 baby, I only saw two people in the car, 00:07:42.59\00:07:45.23 because maybe one person blocked another person, 00:07:45.26\00:07:47.83 from this side, that person wasn't blocked, 00:07:47.86\00:07:49.70 and you actually saw three. 00:07:49.73\00:07:52.03 The apparent disharmony in these little minutiae 00:07:52.07\00:07:55.20 that we see in the gospels 00:07:55.24\00:07:56.81 actually proves the validity of the gospels. 00:07:56.84\00:08:00.71 There's many similarities in the stories, 00:08:00.74\00:08:02.44 Matthew, Mark, and Luke, 00:08:02.48\00:08:04.05 all three discussed Jesus crossing the lake 00:08:04.08\00:08:07.48 and calming the storm. 00:08:07.52\00:08:10.35 All three discussed the demon-possessed man 00:08:10.39\00:08:13.12 who was set free. 00:08:13.15\00:08:15.62 All three discussed the pigs. 00:08:15.66\00:08:17.63 And all three discussed Jesus 00:08:17.66\00:08:20.23 who healed this man. 00:08:20.26\00:08:22.66 The different number of men Mark and Luke, 00:08:22.70\00:08:24.90 maybe their focus was just on the one man, 00:08:24.93\00:08:27.64 maybe he talked more, 00:08:27.67\00:08:29.00 maybe he talked more with Jesus, 00:08:29.04\00:08:30.97 and they focused more from that aspect. 00:08:31.01\00:08:33.78 You know, I could say, 00:08:33.81\00:08:35.14 there's two apples on this table here 00:08:35.18\00:08:36.95 or I could say, 00:08:36.98\00:08:38.31 there's an apple on the table. 00:08:38.35\00:08:39.68 And it doesn't mean there aren't two, 00:08:39.71\00:08:41.25 it just means I'm focused on one particular apple. 00:08:41.28\00:08:44.65 So as we tell the story, 00:08:44.69\00:08:46.02 we might say demoniacs or the man demoniac. 00:08:46.05\00:08:49.09 But it's still all the same story. 00:08:49.12\00:08:51.93 So let's look at the story. 00:08:51.96\00:08:53.29 We're in the Book of Luke. 00:08:53.33\00:08:54.66 Most of our account, 00:08:54.70\00:08:56.03 we're going to pull from the Book of Luke. 00:08:56.06\00:08:57.40 Luke Chapter 8, 00:08:57.43\00:08:58.77 we pick it up in verse 26. 00:08:58.80\00:09:00.84 It is time for deliverance. 00:09:00.87\00:09:05.31 Luke 8:26, 00:09:05.34\00:09:06.68 "Then they sailed 00:09:06.71\00:09:08.04 to the country of the Gadarenes, 00:09:08.08\00:09:09.88 which is opposite Galilee." 00:09:09.91\00:09:12.25 So they're going to mainly Gentile territory. 00:09:12.28\00:09:15.62 Jesus has focused His work. 00:09:15.65\00:09:18.15 He's focused His mission really mainly on the Jews, 00:09:18.19\00:09:22.16 but not just the highfalutin Jews, 00:09:22.19\00:09:24.99 not just the echelon of society, 00:09:25.03\00:09:27.50 not just the religious leaders, 00:09:27.53\00:09:28.96 He came to seek and to save those who were lost. 00:09:29.00\00:09:32.83 He came for the outcasts. 00:09:32.87\00:09:34.54 He came for the lepers. 00:09:34.57\00:09:36.10 He came for the untouchables. 00:09:36.14\00:09:38.37 He came for the woman, 00:09:38.41\00:09:39.87 and He also came for the children. 00:09:39.91\00:09:41.94 We see those that were marginalized in Jewish society, 00:09:41.98\00:09:45.61 those that would have been cast aside, 00:09:45.65\00:09:48.62 Jesus came specifically to set those people free. 00:09:48.65\00:09:53.89 But He didn't just come for the nation of the Jewish people. 00:09:53.92\00:09:57.89 He came for the Gentiles. 00:09:57.93\00:09:59.49 He came for the entire world. 00:09:59.53\00:10:01.40 We see this in John Chapter 4 00:10:01.43\00:10:02.76 as Jesus visits with a Samaritan woman. 00:10:02.80\00:10:05.40 We see this in another account in the gospel, 00:10:05.43\00:10:08.30 as He goes in visits with a Syrophoenician, 00:10:08.34\00:10:11.61 the Canaanite woman. 00:10:11.64\00:10:13.17 And in this account, we see Him crossing the sea, 00:10:13.21\00:10:16.91 going to the country of the Gadarenes, 00:10:16.95\00:10:18.88 which was mainly Gentile territory. 00:10:18.91\00:10:23.08 Takeaway number one, 00:10:23.12\00:10:24.45 remember these 14 takeaways of deliverance. 00:10:24.49\00:10:27.02 Takeaway number one, 00:10:27.06\00:10:28.56 deliverance is for everyone. 00:10:28.59\00:10:32.06 It's not just for the people we like. 00:10:32.09\00:10:34.23 It's not just for the people we know. 00:10:34.26\00:10:36.77 It's not just for the people that we want to help. 00:10:36.80\00:10:40.94 Deliverance is for everyone. 00:10:40.97\00:10:44.84 It's for the stranger, 00:10:44.87\00:10:46.24 it's for the foreigner, 00:10:46.27\00:10:47.61 it's for the outcast. 00:10:47.64\00:10:49.21 You know what? 00:10:49.24\00:10:50.58 It's even for the person I don't necessarily like. 00:10:50.61\00:10:54.15 The gospel is for everyone. 00:10:54.18\00:10:57.72 The Book of Galatians really tells us very clearly. 00:10:57.75\00:11:00.26 I love the Book of Galatians. 00:11:00.29\00:11:02.22 We see the gospel portrayed in such an incredible way. 00:11:02.26\00:11:07.56 And in Galatians 3:28-29. 00:11:07.60\00:11:10.97 It says, "There is neither Jew nor Greek, 00:11:11.00\00:11:12.97 there is neither slave nor free, 00:11:13.00\00:11:15.50 there is neither male nor female, 00:11:15.54\00:11:18.21 for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 00:11:18.24\00:11:22.18 And if you are Christ's, 00:11:22.21\00:11:23.55 then you are heirs, according to the promise 00:11:23.58\00:11:26.55 you are Abraham's seed." 00:11:26.58\00:11:29.18 So what is Paul saying here? 00:11:29.22\00:11:31.22 The gospel is for everyone. 00:11:31.25\00:11:32.69 Deliverance is for everyone. 00:11:32.72\00:11:35.16 It's not just for the people that we want it to be for. 00:11:35.19\00:11:38.33 It's not just for the people 00:11:38.36\00:11:39.69 that we naturally are inclined to. 00:11:39.73\00:11:42.16 It's not just for the good people, 00:11:42.20\00:11:45.50 or the people we think are good. 00:11:45.53\00:11:47.17 Deliverance is for everyone. 00:11:47.20\00:11:49.47 Let's read the next verse. 00:11:49.50\00:11:50.84 Luke 8:27, 00:11:50.87\00:11:53.44 "And when He stepped out on the land, 00:11:53.48\00:11:54.91 there met Him a certain man 00:11:54.94\00:11:56.68 from the city who had demons for," 00:11:56.71\00:12:00.25 just a week or two. 00:12:00.28\00:12:01.62 No, it doesn't say that, does it? 00:12:01.65\00:12:02.98 "He had demons for a long time. 00:12:03.02\00:12:06.39 And he wore no clothes, 00:12:06.42\00:12:09.56 nor did he live in a house but in the tombs." 00:12:09.59\00:12:13.80 Takeaway number two, deliverance is, 00:12:13.83\00:12:16.97 especially for those who have been bound the longest. 00:12:17.00\00:12:22.47 I love that, 00:12:22.50\00:12:23.84 Jesus did not just come for those who were just 00:12:23.87\00:12:27.28 stepped into sin, 00:12:27.31\00:12:28.64 or just stepped off the abyss into something 00:12:28.68\00:12:31.21 that God did not want them to be in. 00:12:31.25\00:12:33.38 What did it say? 00:12:33.42\00:12:34.75 This man had demons a long time. 00:12:34.78\00:12:37.89 Deliverance is especially for those 00:12:37.92\00:12:40.52 who have been bound the longest. 00:12:40.56\00:12:42.39 Do you feel like you're bound? 00:12:42.42\00:12:43.76 Are you in addiction? 00:12:43.79\00:12:45.13 Are you in sin? 00:12:45.16\00:12:46.49 Do you feel like there is no way out 00:12:46.53\00:12:48.13 and you say, but you don't understand, Jill. 00:12:48.16\00:12:49.90 I have been in bondage a long time. 00:12:49.93\00:12:52.43 I haven't walked in sin just a week 00:12:52.47\00:12:54.20 or a month or a year or two, 00:12:54.24\00:12:56.14 or 10 or 20, or 30. 00:12:56.17\00:12:58.84 I've been 50 years, I've been 60 years, 00:12:58.87\00:13:01.58 I've been 70 years steeped in addiction and sin. 00:13:01.61\00:13:07.15 Deliverance, Jesus came especially to set you free. 00:13:07.18\00:13:12.29 Satan is the accuser of the brethren, 00:13:12.32\00:13:14.32 and we see that in Revelation Chapter 12. 00:13:14.36\00:13:16.69 Turn with me there, keep your finger in Luke, 00:13:16.73\00:13:18.46 we're coming back. 00:13:18.49\00:13:19.83 But let's go to Revelation 12:10, 00:13:19.86\00:13:23.53 "Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, 00:13:23.57\00:13:26.57 'Now salvation, and strength, 00:13:26.60\00:13:28.77 and the kingdom of our God, 00:13:28.80\00:13:30.51 and the power of His Christ have come, 00:13:30.54\00:13:33.91 for the accuser of our brethren, 00:13:33.94\00:13:35.58 who accused them before our God day and night, 00:13:35.61\00:13:40.32 he has been cast down.'" 00:13:40.35\00:13:41.82 You know, what's amazing to me, 00:13:41.85\00:13:43.22 is that Satan is the one who wants to lead us into sin, 00:13:43.25\00:13:45.72 does he not? 00:13:45.75\00:13:47.09 He's the one who tempts. 00:13:47.12\00:13:48.46 He's the one who entices. 00:13:48.49\00:13:49.92 He's the one who wants to wrap us up 00:13:49.96\00:13:52.76 in addiction, in bondage. 00:13:52.79\00:13:55.46 And yet, when he does that, 00:13:55.50\00:13:57.57 when he wraps us up in sin, 00:13:57.60\00:13:59.33 when he cloaks us with darkness, 00:13:59.37\00:14:01.50 when he covers us with all that, 00:14:01.54\00:14:03.61 then he stands and accuses us. 00:14:03.64\00:14:06.61 He's the one who enticed us and pulled us into sin. 00:14:06.64\00:14:09.88 And as soon as we step into it, 00:14:09.91\00:14:11.85 he stands in judgment. 00:14:11.88\00:14:13.42 He stands in condemnation over us. 00:14:13.45\00:14:16.82 He is the accuser of the brethren. 00:14:16.85\00:14:21.12 Have you ever heard any of those accusations 00:14:21.16\00:14:25.36 from the enemy? 00:14:25.39\00:14:26.83 I have. 00:14:26.86\00:14:28.20 You're not good enough. 00:14:28.23\00:14:29.56 You don't obey well enough. 00:14:29.60\00:14:32.23 You don't measure up. 00:14:32.27\00:14:35.27 You aren't holy enough. 00:14:35.30\00:14:37.17 Who do you think you are? 00:14:37.21\00:14:38.54 You messed up yet again. 00:14:38.57\00:14:41.74 You think God would take you back after what you have done? 00:14:41.78\00:14:45.98 If I'm being honest with you and transparent with you, 00:14:46.01\00:14:48.22 I have wrestled with this. 00:14:48.25\00:14:49.58 There have been times in my Christian experience. 00:14:49.62\00:14:51.39 I accepted Jesus in my heart 00:14:51.42\00:14:53.05 and life as a little girl. 00:14:53.09\00:14:55.22 And I grew up wanting to walk with Him, 00:14:55.26\00:14:57.86 wanting to follow Him, 00:14:57.89\00:14:59.53 wanting to sense His smile upon me, 00:14:59.56\00:15:03.67 to feel His breath as it were on my cheek, 00:15:03.70\00:15:06.33 to walk in concert with Him. 00:15:06.37\00:15:09.80 And yet there have been times in my experience 00:15:09.84\00:15:13.07 that Satan has enticed me. 00:15:13.11\00:15:15.44 And instead of me clinging to Jesus, 00:15:15.48\00:15:18.28 I have walked the other direction, 00:15:18.31\00:15:20.58 I have gone in a way of my own choosing. 00:15:20.62\00:15:23.42 I've said, "I want to do my own thing, God." 00:15:23.45\00:15:25.89 And when I did, 00:15:25.92\00:15:27.62 when I stepped into sin, 00:15:27.66\00:15:30.79 Satan instantly pounced on my back and said, 00:15:30.83\00:15:33.50 "Who do you think you are? 00:15:33.53\00:15:34.93 You think you're a Christian? 00:15:34.96\00:15:36.60 What type of Christian would do that? 00:15:36.63\00:15:38.63 Jesus, He's not gonna forgive you. 00:15:38.67\00:15:41.10 You need to do penance, 00:15:41.14\00:15:42.57 you need to try harder. 00:15:42.60\00:15:44.57 You need to be good 00:15:44.61\00:15:45.94 before He will even accept you back to me." 00:15:45.97\00:15:51.18 Nothing is further from the truth. 00:15:51.21\00:15:53.68 Jesus came that you and I would have life 00:15:53.72\00:15:56.45 and have it more abundantly. 00:15:56.48\00:15:57.82 He came that we could experience forgiveness, 00:15:57.85\00:16:00.96 and freedom, and deliverance from bondage. 00:16:00.99\00:16:04.49 So do not listen to the lies of the enemy. 00:16:04.53\00:16:08.40 Do not listen to Satan's accusations that say, 00:16:08.43\00:16:12.03 you aren't good enough, 00:16:12.07\00:16:13.87 or you've gone too far, 00:16:13.90\00:16:15.70 or you've done too much 00:16:15.74\00:16:17.77 that He cannot forgive you. 00:16:17.81\00:16:20.28 Do not listen to that. 00:16:20.31\00:16:21.64 For Satan is the accuser of the brethren. 00:16:21.68\00:16:24.28 In Luke 5:32, Jesus is speaking, 00:16:24.31\00:16:27.75 he says, "I have not come to call the righteous, 00:16:27.78\00:16:32.22 but sinners, to repentance." 00:16:32.25\00:16:35.62 You see, deliverance is especially 00:16:35.66\00:16:37.73 for those who are bound. 00:16:37.76\00:16:39.23 Deliverance is especially 00:16:39.26\00:16:40.76 for those who have been bound the longest. 00:16:40.80\00:16:44.57 Think about Jesus in His ministry, 00:16:44.60\00:16:46.43 the woman who was bound for 18 years 00:16:46.47\00:16:49.04 Jesus came and delivered her. 00:16:49.07\00:16:51.27 Think about the woman with the issue of blood 00:16:51.31\00:16:53.01 for 12 years, Jesus came and delivered her. 00:16:53.04\00:16:56.98 Think about the man who was born blind. 00:16:57.01\00:16:59.31 That is a lifetime of bondage, 00:16:59.35\00:17:02.42 Jesus came and delivered him. 00:17:02.45\00:17:05.12 Think about the woman caught in the act of adultery. 00:17:05.15\00:17:08.69 And I have a feeling it was not the first time 00:17:08.72\00:17:10.53 she was caught in that, 00:17:10.56\00:17:11.89 but not the first time she engaged in that, 00:17:11.93\00:17:13.80 it was just the first time she was caught in that. 00:17:13.83\00:17:16.70 And yet Jesus came to set her free. 00:17:16.73\00:17:20.57 Takeaway number two, deliverance is for those 00:17:20.60\00:17:23.30 who have been bound the longest. 00:17:23.34\00:17:25.84 Deliverance is for us. 00:17:25.87\00:17:27.81 Takeaway number three, this is still from the same verse. 00:17:27.84\00:17:30.25 Deliverance is for those who struggle with shame, 00:17:30.28\00:17:33.72 who struggle with sin. 00:17:33.75\00:17:35.08 Remember the demoniac? 00:17:35.12\00:17:36.45 What does the Bible say? 00:17:36.48\00:17:37.82 He wore no clothes. 00:17:37.85\00:17:40.12 That's a symbol of the shame that he lived under. 00:17:40.16\00:17:44.26 Remember, in the Garden of Eden, 00:17:44.29\00:17:45.79 Adam and Eve walked and talked with God 00:17:45.83\00:17:48.53 in the cool of the day. 00:17:48.56\00:17:50.40 And then in Genesis Chapter 3, 00:17:50.43\00:17:52.23 we see sin entered this world. 00:17:52.27\00:17:55.00 We see sin brought separation from the Father, 00:17:55.04\00:17:58.27 sin brought fear and guilt, 00:17:58.31\00:18:00.81 sin brought shame and condemnation. 00:18:00.84\00:18:04.78 In Genesis 3:7, 00:18:04.81\00:18:07.15 "The eyes of both of them," 00:18:07.18\00:18:08.52 this is Adam and Eve, "were opened, 00:18:08.55\00:18:10.79 and they knew they were naked, 00:18:10.82\00:18:12.29 and they sewed fig leaves together 00:18:12.32\00:18:14.96 and made themselves covering." 00:18:14.99\00:18:17.43 Why? 00:18:17.46\00:18:18.79 Because they were ashamed and they recognize their nakedness. 00:18:18.83\00:18:22.90 Deliverance is especially for those who struggle 00:18:22.93\00:18:26.43 with shame and with sin. 00:18:26.47\00:18:28.60 Isaiah 50:7, I love this promise. 00:18:28.64\00:18:31.11 I love the Book of Isaiah. 00:18:31.14\00:18:32.47 The first half, of course, 00:18:32.51\00:18:33.84 being the book of judgment, 00:18:33.88\00:18:35.34 but the second half being the book of comfort 00:18:35.38\00:18:39.35 and healing, and we're in the second half. 00:18:39.38\00:18:41.18 We're in Isaiah 50:7, 00:18:41.22\00:18:45.32 "For the Lord God will help Me, 00:18:45.35\00:18:47.52 therefore I will not be disgraced, 00:18:47.56\00:18:50.73 I have set My face like a flint, 00:18:50.76\00:18:53.93 and I know I will not be ashamed." 00:18:53.96\00:18:56.56 Isn't that incredible the Lord God says, 00:18:56.60\00:18:58.17 "You do not have to be afraid. 00:18:58.20\00:19:00.70 You do not have to walk in shame. 00:19:00.74\00:19:03.00 You do not have to wallow in guilt and condemnation." 00:19:03.04\00:19:07.68 Jesus came. 00:19:07.71\00:19:09.18 Takeaway number three, 00:19:09.21\00:19:10.65 deliverance is especially 00:19:10.68\00:19:13.31 for those who struggle with sin and shame. 00:19:13.35\00:19:15.68 Let's read the next verse. 00:19:15.72\00:19:17.05 We're in Luke Chapter 8, 00:19:17.09\00:19:18.79 we're picking up verses 28 and 29. 00:19:18.82\00:19:22.09 "When he saw Jesus," this is the demoniac, 00:19:22.12\00:19:25.26 "he cried out and fell down before Him, 00:19:25.29\00:19:28.86 with a loud voice and said, 00:19:28.90\00:19:30.90 'What have I to do with You, 00:19:30.93\00:19:32.27 Jesus, Son of the Most High God? 00:19:32.30\00:19:35.37 I beg You, do not torment me!' 00:19:35.40\00:19:39.17 For He, that's Jesus, had commanded 00:19:39.21\00:19:41.98 the unclean spirit to come out of the man.'" 00:19:42.01\00:19:44.15 Takeaway number four, 00:19:44.18\00:19:45.58 deliverance is for those who cannot say 00:19:45.61\00:19:49.72 what is in their heart. 00:19:49.75\00:19:51.09 What do I mean by that? 00:19:51.12\00:19:52.45 Was that the demoniac speaking, 00:19:52.49\00:19:54.06 saying, "What do I have to do with you? 00:19:54.09\00:19:56.56 Leave me alone." 00:19:56.59\00:19:57.93 Was that the man speaking or was that the demons 00:19:57.96\00:20:01.20 that inhabited him? 00:20:01.23\00:20:02.96 You see, Jesus looked beyond the words 00:20:03.00\00:20:04.77 that were merely spoken. 00:20:04.80\00:20:06.17 He looked beyond the demon that was possessing the man 00:20:06.20\00:20:08.54 and he looked into the man's heart. 00:20:08.57\00:20:11.21 And he knew that this man, 00:20:11.24\00:20:13.81 he wanted deliverance, 00:20:13.84\00:20:15.24 he wanted to be set free. 00:20:15.28\00:20:17.05 You see, it was time for deliverance 00:20:17.08\00:20:19.98 in the life of the demoniac. 00:20:20.02\00:20:21.38 And Jesus knew this. 00:20:21.42\00:20:23.75 He says in 1 Samuel 16:7, 00:20:23.79\00:20:26.96 "The Lord said to Samuel, 00:20:26.99\00:20:28.32 'Do not look at his outward appearance, 00:20:28.36\00:20:31.76 or his physical stature, for I have refused him. 00:20:31.79\00:20:34.93 The Lord does not see as man sees, 00:20:34.96\00:20:37.57 man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord, 00:20:37.60\00:20:40.90 He looks at the heart." 00:20:40.94\00:20:44.11 I love that. 00:20:44.14\00:20:45.47 Because when you cannot even get out exactly 00:20:45.51\00:20:48.14 what's in your heart, 00:20:48.18\00:20:49.51 when you don't know how to express your desire 00:20:49.54\00:20:52.68 for freedom and deliverance, 00:20:52.71\00:20:54.72 the Lord sees your heart. 00:20:54.75\00:20:56.08 The Lord knows your heart. 00:20:56.12\00:20:57.45 Think about Peter when he's walking on the water 00:20:57.49\00:20:59.85 to meet Jesus. 00:20:59.89\00:21:01.22 And what happens? 00:21:01.26\00:21:02.59 He begins, he takes his eyes off Jesus, 00:21:02.62\00:21:04.36 and he begins to sink 00:21:04.39\00:21:05.83 and he doesn't have time for a big, long prayer. 00:21:05.86\00:21:08.70 He doesn't have time to articulate the way 00:21:08.73\00:21:10.87 he had sinned or stepped off and looked away from Jesus. 00:21:10.90\00:21:14.54 All he says is, "Lord, save me." 00:21:14.57\00:21:17.27 God sees our hearts. 00:21:17.31\00:21:19.71 God sees your heart. 00:21:19.74\00:21:22.04 God knows what is in your heart. 00:21:22.08\00:21:25.71 And God wants to bring you deliverance. 00:21:25.75\00:21:28.32 Let's look, we stop halfway through verse 29. 00:21:28.35\00:21:30.62 So let's read the second half of verse 29. 00:21:30.65\00:21:32.92 We're in Luke 8:29, 00:21:32.95\00:21:34.92 "For it," this is the demons, 00:21:34.96\00:21:37.63 "had often seized him, 00:21:37.66\00:21:40.26 and he was kept under guard, 00:21:40.30\00:21:42.00 bound with chains and shackles, 00:21:42.03\00:21:45.47 and he broke the bonds 00:21:45.50\00:21:47.77 and was driven by the demon into the wilderness." 00:21:47.80\00:21:53.21 Takeaway number five, deliverance is for those 00:21:53.24\00:21:57.65 who others can't control. 00:21:57.68\00:22:01.22 What do I mean by that? 00:22:01.25\00:22:02.58 That's kind of an interesting, 00:22:02.62\00:22:03.95 how can deliverance be for those 00:22:03.99\00:22:05.82 who others can't control? 00:22:05.85\00:22:07.66 Now did people want to control the demoniac? 00:22:07.69\00:22:10.66 It's very clear, they would not have bound him 00:22:10.69\00:22:13.09 with chains unless they were afraid of him. 00:22:13.13\00:22:15.43 And less, they wanted to keep him restrained, 00:22:15.46\00:22:18.67 unless they didn't want him to break away and hurt them. 00:22:18.70\00:22:21.70 And yet other people tried to control him 00:22:21.74\00:22:25.77 and he was uncontrollable. 00:22:25.81\00:22:27.28 He was a wild man, he was uncontrollable. 00:22:27.31\00:22:30.15 And yet, deliverance was even for him. 00:22:30.18\00:22:33.28 You could say, well, if other people couldn't do it, 00:22:33.31\00:22:35.42 how could Jesus bring him deliverance? 00:22:35.45\00:22:37.22 Jesus is the master of the sea. 00:22:37.25\00:22:39.45 Jesus is the master of men. 00:22:39.49\00:22:41.26 Jesus is the master of demons. 00:22:41.29\00:22:44.13 And He can deliver where other methods fail. 00:22:44.16\00:22:48.83 Have you tried other methods? 00:22:48.86\00:22:50.57 Have you tried school or tried church or tried discipline? 00:22:50.60\00:22:54.60 Are you a parent 00:22:54.64\00:22:55.97 and you're looking at your children and say, 00:22:56.00\00:22:57.77 "But I want them to walk in obedience, 00:22:57.81\00:23:00.24 I want them to follow Jesus. 00:23:00.28\00:23:02.44 But yet, it seems like all the controls 00:23:02.48\00:23:05.08 I put on aren't working, 00:23:05.11\00:23:06.72 and they are out of control." 00:23:06.75\00:23:09.35 Are you an adult and you think, 00:23:09.38\00:23:10.92 but I want these 12 step groups, 00:23:10.95\00:23:13.29 I am not knocking 12 step groups 00:23:13.32\00:23:15.02 because I believe there's a lot of healing 00:23:15.06\00:23:16.73 and help and wholeness to be found in that. 00:23:16.76\00:23:19.06 Yet at the same time, 00:23:19.09\00:23:20.83 there comes a certain point where we say 00:23:20.86\00:23:22.46 all these outside things that we put on ourselves, 00:23:22.50\00:23:25.83 they're not really helping, 00:23:25.87\00:23:27.20 and I need deliverance. 00:23:27.24\00:23:29.20 I want deliverance. 00:23:29.24\00:23:31.51 Deliverance is for those who other methods have tried. 00:23:31.54\00:23:34.88 Other people have tried and they have failed. 00:23:34.91\00:23:37.78 Deliverance is for you. 00:23:37.81\00:23:40.22 The next verse. 00:23:40.25\00:23:42.55 Before we get to that, in the same section, 00:23:42.58\00:23:44.49 we're jumping over to Mark, 00:23:44.52\00:23:46.39 Mark Chapter 5. 00:23:46.42\00:23:47.76 Remember, the story is told in Matthew, 00:23:47.79\00:23:49.12 Mark and Luke, and I like this particular instance 00:23:49.16\00:23:51.69 that Mark brings out that Luke does not. 00:23:51.73\00:23:53.86 So let's go to Mark 5. 00:23:53.90\00:23:55.23 This is our takeaway number six, 00:23:55.26\00:23:56.67 but we find it in Mark. 00:23:56.70\00:23:58.03 Mark 5:5, "And always, night and day, 00:23:58.07\00:24:02.77 he was in the mountains and the tombs, 00:24:02.80\00:24:05.94 crying out and cutting himself with stones." 00:24:05.97\00:24:11.68 That word cutting in the Greek means to cut, 00:24:11.71\00:24:14.48 to gash, to mangle, 00:24:14.52\00:24:16.92 so he wasn't just lightly cutting himself, 00:24:16.95\00:24:19.82 he was cutting himself deeply with the stones. 00:24:19.85\00:24:24.59 Takeaway number six, 00:24:24.63\00:24:26.06 deliverance is for those who self harm. 00:24:26.09\00:24:29.93 Deliverance is for those who self abuse. 00:24:29.96\00:24:34.24 Deliverance is for those who self inflict pain. 00:24:34.27\00:24:39.91 She was a beautiful girl. 00:24:39.94\00:24:42.38 Probably 16 upperclassman in school, 00:24:42.41\00:24:45.55 blond hair like that, 00:24:45.58\00:24:46.92 peaches and cream, 00:24:46.95\00:24:48.28 perfect looking complexion, 00:24:48.32\00:24:50.02 tall, lot of gifts, lot of abilities. 00:24:50.05\00:24:53.29 I was a brand new teacher fresh out of college, 00:24:53.32\00:24:58.56 my very first job, 00:24:58.59\00:25:01.10 didn't know anything about anything. 00:25:01.13\00:25:04.90 And I was so busy, 00:25:04.93\00:25:06.97 caught up in the rounds of teaching for the first time, 00:25:07.00\00:25:11.37 of grading papers, 00:25:11.41\00:25:13.91 making lesson plans 00:25:13.94\00:25:15.28 and trying to maintain classroom control, 00:25:15.31\00:25:17.95 all those new things that you've never done before, 00:25:17.98\00:25:19.78 you really don't know how to do. 00:25:19.81\00:25:21.35 And I was so caught up in that, 00:25:21.38\00:25:24.35 that I forgot, 00:25:24.39\00:25:25.72 or I was too busy to take time to ask about this girl. 00:25:25.75\00:25:30.96 We'll call her Megan. 00:25:30.99\00:25:32.33 That's not her real name. 00:25:32.36\00:25:33.70 But I was too busy to ask about Megan, 00:25:33.73\00:25:37.37 to ask how her heart was, 00:25:37.40\00:25:40.24 to ask was she okay. 00:25:40.27\00:25:42.57 She smiled. 00:25:42.60\00:25:43.94 She seemed okay. 00:25:43.97\00:25:45.31 But I never took time to even ask. 00:25:45.34\00:25:47.98 And I'm ashamed to tell you that, 00:25:48.01\00:25:49.34 this was 20-25 years ago. 00:25:49.38\00:25:53.11 And I still remember it as if it were yesterday. 00:25:53.15\00:25:56.48 Several months went by 00:25:56.52\00:25:57.85 and we took the students on a getaway. 00:25:57.89\00:26:00.22 It was a boarding school, academy. 00:26:00.26\00:26:03.29 We took them on a getaway for the weekend. 00:26:03.32\00:26:05.79 It was one of those weekend retreats at this cabin. 00:26:05.83\00:26:09.83 And we got together and did all this stuff 00:26:09.86\00:26:13.54 for community and team building within the school. 00:26:13.57\00:26:17.44 And I'll never forget, 00:26:17.47\00:26:18.91 Megan came to me and she said, 00:26:18.94\00:26:20.28 "Miss Jill, can I talk to you?" 00:26:20.31\00:26:21.64 And I said, "Oh, sure, I'd love to talk to you." 00:26:21.68\00:26:24.15 And we sat down on the bed. 00:26:24.18\00:26:26.01 And for the first time 00:26:26.05\00:26:27.65 I remember she looked at me in the eyes. 00:26:27.68\00:26:30.42 And for the first time I was really amazed 00:26:30.45\00:26:33.15 at the pain in her eyes. 00:26:33.19\00:26:38.09 I'd known her for months. 00:26:38.13\00:26:39.59 And I'd never even noticed and it 00:26:39.63\00:26:42.00 kind of caught my breath. 00:26:42.03\00:26:43.37 And I remember thinking, has she always had this pain? 00:26:43.40\00:26:47.17 Have I never even noticed that pain before? 00:26:47.20\00:26:52.77 And I said, "Megan, I'm so sorry," 00:26:52.81\00:26:54.74 because the pain was evident on her face. 00:26:54.78\00:26:57.91 She said, "No, no, no, Miss Jill, 00:26:57.95\00:26:59.28 you don't understand." 00:26:59.31\00:27:00.65 And so she began, 00:27:00.68\00:27:02.02 she was wearing a long sleeve shirt. 00:27:02.05\00:27:03.39 And she unbuttoned it and she began to roll it up. 00:27:03.42\00:27:05.45 And just at that moment, it hit me 00:27:05.49\00:27:06.82 that I never seen her in a short sleeve shirt. 00:27:06.86\00:27:09.56 She always wore sweaters even when it was warm, 00:27:09.59\00:27:13.19 long sleeve shirts. 00:27:13.23\00:27:14.56 And I thought that's odd, 00:27:14.60\00:27:15.93 why didn't I ever notice that before. 00:27:15.96\00:27:17.70 And she unrolled her shirt and pull it up 00:27:17.73\00:27:20.24 and I'll never forget on her forearm 00:27:20.27\00:27:24.27 she'd been cutting. 00:27:24.31\00:27:25.81 You could see the scratches in her arm 00:27:25.84\00:27:27.98 and the dried blood across her arm. 00:27:28.01\00:27:29.84 But what she had done was not just random slashes 00:27:29.88\00:27:34.28 in her skin. 00:27:34.32\00:27:35.68 She had cut four letters into her forearm. 00:27:35.72\00:27:39.95 And they spelled help, 00:27:39.99\00:27:42.19 H-E-L-P. 00:27:42.22\00:27:48.10 And I remember, I sat there. 00:27:48.13\00:27:50.63 And I thought, Jill, you've been too busy 00:27:50.67\00:27:54.64 to see the pain in this girl, 00:27:54.67\00:27:57.77 to see that she was literally crying out for help, 00:27:57.81\00:28:03.51 cutting herself. 00:28:03.55\00:28:06.35 And yet you never saw that before, 00:28:06.38\00:28:08.52 and you never reached out before. 00:28:08.55\00:28:11.39 This man had been in the mountains in the tombs, 00:28:11.42\00:28:16.02 cutting himself with stones. 00:28:16.06\00:28:19.53 Deliverance is especially 00:28:19.56\00:28:22.66 for those who self harm. 00:28:22.70\00:28:25.57 Deliverance is for the bulimic, and the anorexic, 00:28:25.60\00:28:28.57 and the cutter, and the drug addict, 00:28:28.60\00:28:30.84 and the drug dealer, and the alcoholic, 00:28:30.87\00:28:34.21 and the prostitute. 00:28:34.24\00:28:36.08 And for those who are suicidal, 00:28:36.11\00:28:37.88 deliverance is especially for you. 00:28:37.91\00:28:42.45 John 6:37, I love this scripture. 00:28:42.48\00:28:44.59 "Jesus says, 'Whoever comes to me, 00:28:44.62\00:28:46.65 I will never cast out.'" 00:28:46.69\00:28:49.42 You might be saying but I'm afraid 00:28:49.46\00:28:51.36 I'm going to be cast out, 00:28:51.39\00:28:52.86 but He doesn't know what I've done. 00:28:52.89\00:28:54.23 Of course, He knows what you've done. 00:28:54.26\00:28:55.60 Of course, He knows all about you. 00:28:55.63\00:28:56.97 He created you. 00:28:57.00\00:28:58.33 He made you, He wants to redeem you. 00:28:58.37\00:29:00.84 He knows that you're trapped in bondage. 00:29:00.87\00:29:02.84 He knows that you're in addiction. 00:29:02.87\00:29:04.71 He knows all about that. 00:29:04.74\00:29:07.68 And yet He came to deliver you. 00:29:07.71\00:29:10.48 It is time for deliverance. 00:29:10.51\00:29:14.68 And not just Jesus came for you. 00:29:14.72\00:29:17.29 But John 16:27, I love this scripture, 00:29:17.32\00:29:19.82 it says, "The Father Himself loves you." 00:29:19.85\00:29:24.16 So many times we think the God of the Old Testament 00:29:24.19\00:29:26.23 is this God of justice, and this God of harshness, 00:29:26.26\00:29:28.70 and He's all about rules. 00:29:28.73\00:29:31.03 And the God of the New Testament 00:29:31.07\00:29:32.47 is all about love and all about relationship. 00:29:32.50\00:29:34.80 But the truth is they are one and the same God. 00:29:34.84\00:29:38.54 Yes, God is a God of justice. 00:29:38.57\00:29:40.38 Yes, God is a God of judgment. 00:29:40.41\00:29:42.01 God is a God of fairness. 00:29:42.04\00:29:43.38 His law is holy, just and good. 00:29:43.41\00:29:45.38 At the same time Jesus came, 00:29:45.41\00:29:47.85 so that you and I can be set free 00:29:47.88\00:29:49.58 and so that you and I can be delivered 00:29:49.62\00:29:51.29 and that we don't have to walk in bondage. 00:29:51.32\00:29:54.56 We don't have to cut with stones, 00:29:54.59\00:29:56.32 we don't have to walk in that anymore. 00:29:56.36\00:30:01.36 Takeaway number seven, 00:30:01.40\00:30:02.96 deliverance is for those who feel they are dead, 00:30:03.00\00:30:08.80 or wish they were dead. 00:30:08.84\00:30:10.51 Now you say, "Jill, where did you get this?" 00:30:10.54\00:30:12.17 Where did the demoniac live? 00:30:12.21\00:30:14.08 He dwelt in the tombs, 00:30:14.11\00:30:16.24 he dwelt in the caves. 00:30:16.28\00:30:18.45 This is where they buried dead people. 00:30:18.48\00:30:22.02 And yet Jesus came to set them free. 00:30:22.05\00:30:27.16 He dwells in those places. 00:30:27.19\00:30:28.79 Deliverance is especially for those who feel 00:30:28.82\00:30:31.46 they are dead, 00:30:31.49\00:30:32.83 who feel like you dwell in a cave, 00:30:32.86\00:30:35.06 and I wish my life were over. 00:30:35.10\00:30:38.27 Deliverance is especially for you. 00:30:38.30\00:30:42.10 I love this promise in Romans 4:17. 00:30:42.14\00:30:45.07 This tells us the power of the God that we serve, 00:30:45.11\00:30:48.44 and the power of the Word of God. 00:30:48.48\00:30:51.98 There is tremendous power in this Word. 00:30:52.01\00:30:54.85 Romans 4:17. 00:30:54.88\00:30:56.22 This is, of course, talking about Abraham. 00:30:56.25\00:30:59.25 But it says, God who gives life to the dead, 00:30:59.29\00:31:01.49 meaning Abraham and Sarah were past the age 00:31:01.52\00:31:03.66 where they could have children, Sarah specifically. 00:31:03.69\00:31:06.16 And yet God gave life to her dead womb, 00:31:06.19\00:31:10.43 you could say, her dead body. 00:31:10.47\00:31:11.93 God who gives life to the dead, 00:31:11.97\00:31:14.74 and calls those things which do not exist, 00:31:14.77\00:31:17.67 as though they already did. 00:31:17.71\00:31:20.98 So do you feel that you are in a dead place? 00:31:21.01\00:31:24.05 Do you feel like there is no hope? 00:31:24.08\00:31:25.78 Do you feel like there is no deliverance? 00:31:25.81\00:31:28.38 Deliverance is especially for those who feel 00:31:28.42\00:31:32.09 they were dead or wish they were dead. 00:31:32.12\00:31:36.32 Jesus came to give us life. 00:31:36.36\00:31:39.49 Jesus came to set us free. 00:31:39.53\00:31:42.76 Jesus came to bring deliverance. 00:31:42.80\00:31:46.00 Let's turn to Ephesians, Ephesians Chapter 2. 00:31:46.03\00:31:48.94 I love this passage, because this is about 00:31:48.97\00:31:51.17 how you and I are all dead in trespasses and sins. 00:31:51.21\00:31:54.01 And this is all of us. 00:31:54.04\00:31:55.38 You could say, "But I'm a pretty good person, 00:31:55.41\00:31:57.68 and I'm a good Christian. 00:31:57.71\00:31:59.05 And I'm not one of those addicts, Jill. 00:31:59.08\00:32:00.62 And I'm not one of those prostitutes. 00:32:00.65\00:32:02.72 You know, I don't cut and I don't, 00:32:02.75\00:32:04.55 I'm not a drug addict. 00:32:04.59\00:32:05.92 I don't walk in those ways." 00:32:05.95\00:32:07.59 But we will get in just a moment, 00:32:07.62\00:32:10.53 to not the demoniac but the other people, 00:32:10.56\00:32:13.19 the townspeople, who still were in bondage, 00:32:13.23\00:32:17.67 who still needed deliverance. 00:32:17.70\00:32:20.74 You see, deliverance is for all of us. 00:32:20.77\00:32:22.94 If we feel like we're in the muck in the scum, 00:32:22.97\00:32:26.37 we might recognize our need of Jesus more. 00:32:26.41\00:32:29.74 Yet, deliverance truly is for all of us 00:32:29.78\00:32:34.25 whether we recognize it or not, 00:32:34.28\00:32:35.75 whether our sins are more sanitized than others, 00:32:35.78\00:32:40.56 deliverance is still for us. 00:32:40.59\00:32:41.92 We're going to Ephesians 2. 00:32:41.96\00:32:43.36 Ephesians 2, it says in verse 1, 00:32:43.39\00:32:45.93 "And you He made alive, 00:32:45.96\00:32:47.60 who were dead in trespasses and sins, 00:32:47.63\00:32:50.97 in which you once walked according to the course 00:32:51.00\00:32:53.07 of this world, according to the prince 00:32:53.10\00:32:54.87 of the power of the air." 00:32:54.90\00:32:56.24 That's all of us. We all walked in sin. 00:32:56.27\00:32:58.14 The Bible says, "All have sinned 00:32:58.17\00:32:59.51 and fallen short of the glory of God." 00:32:59.54\00:33:02.51 "The spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience," 00:33:02.54\00:33:05.15 verse 3, 00:33:05.18\00:33:06.82 "among whom also we all once conducted ourselves 00:33:06.85\00:33:10.72 in the lusts of our flesh, 00:33:10.75\00:33:13.76 fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, 00:33:13.79\00:33:17.33 and were by nature children of wrath, 00:33:17.36\00:33:19.26 just as the others." 00:33:19.29\00:33:20.73 But God, it does not stop there. 00:33:20.76\00:33:22.93 We do not have to live in addiction. 00:33:22.96\00:33:26.30 We do not have to live in that place 00:33:26.33\00:33:28.17 where we were dead in trespasses and sins. 00:33:28.20\00:33:31.24 Verse 4, "But God, 00:33:31.27\00:33:33.34 who is rich in mercy, 00:33:33.38\00:33:35.44 because of His great love with which He loved us, 00:33:35.48\00:33:37.78 even when we were dead in trespasses and sins, 00:33:37.81\00:33:40.92 have made us alive together with Christ, 00:33:40.95\00:33:44.79 by grace you have been saved, 00:33:44.82\00:33:47.02 and has raised us up together, 00:33:47.06\00:33:48.62 and made us sit together in the heavenly places 00:33:48.66\00:33:50.53 in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come 00:33:50.56\00:33:54.30 He might show the exceeding riches 00:33:54.33\00:33:55.80 of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus." 00:33:55.83\00:33:58.90 And then it goes on to the passage we all know, 00:33:58.93\00:34:00.80 by grace we've been saved through faith. 00:34:00.84\00:34:02.57 But I love that preamble to that, 00:34:02.60\00:34:05.41 because it shows that we were dead 00:34:05.44\00:34:06.94 in trespasses and sins. 00:34:06.98\00:34:08.31 Yes, we were lost. 00:34:08.34\00:34:09.71 We were without God. 00:34:09.74\00:34:11.51 We were without hope. 00:34:11.55\00:34:12.88 And yet, but God demonstrated His love toward us 00:34:12.91\00:34:16.75 while we were yet sinners, still, even now. 00:34:16.79\00:34:19.85 He came to pull us out of that dead place 00:34:19.89\00:34:24.49 of trespasses and sins, pull us out of the tombs, 00:34:24.53\00:34:27.53 and bring us deliverance. 00:34:27.56\00:34:30.43 We're going back to Luke, Luke 8:30. 00:34:30.47\00:34:33.13 This is takeaway number eight. 00:34:33.17\00:34:36.40 "Jesus asked him saying, 00:34:36.44\00:34:38.24 'What is your name?'" 00:34:38.27\00:34:39.97 And he said, now, this is the demons speaking, 00:34:40.01\00:34:42.84 "'Legion,' because many demons had entered him.'" 00:34:42.88\00:34:47.62 Takeaway number eight, 00:34:47.65\00:34:49.28 deliverance is for those who are overwhelmed 00:34:49.32\00:34:53.25 or controlled. 00:34:53.29\00:34:56.06 I don't know about you, but I cannot even imagine 00:34:56.09\00:34:58.86 being controlled by a legion of demons, 00:34:58.89\00:35:00.80 not just one demon but a legion. 00:35:00.83\00:35:03.00 You know, a legion was the largest unit 00:35:03.03\00:35:05.50 of the Roman army, 00:35:05.53\00:35:06.87 and it consisted of up to 6,000 men. 00:35:06.90\00:35:11.21 Now, we don't know 00:35:11.24\00:35:12.57 how many demons resided inside this man. 00:35:12.61\00:35:15.91 But you could say there was at least a thousand or two, 00:35:15.94\00:35:18.38 or maybe three, maybe four, 00:35:18.41\00:35:19.88 we don't know, 00:35:19.91\00:35:21.25 multitudes of demons in one person. 00:35:21.28\00:35:25.42 Deliverance is especially for those who are controlled, 00:35:25.45\00:35:29.66 or for those who are overwhelmed 00:35:29.69\00:35:32.86 with a seeming multiplicity of issues. 00:35:32.89\00:35:35.86 When you're at the end of your rope, 00:35:35.90\00:35:37.27 when you cannot carry on, 00:35:37.30\00:35:39.40 when you can't get the victory, 00:35:39.43\00:35:40.94 Jesus shows up. 00:35:40.97\00:35:43.10 Jesus encountered a legion of Satan's army 00:35:43.14\00:35:46.21 there in the man right there at the shore. 00:35:46.24\00:35:49.11 And he not only had authority over them, 00:35:49.14\00:35:51.28 he put them to route 00:35:51.31\00:35:52.65 and we see that in the next verse. 00:35:52.68\00:35:54.72 We're in Luke 8:31-32, 00:35:54.75\00:35:57.65 "And they begged him," this is the demons, 00:35:57.69\00:36:00.46 "that he would not command them to go out into the abyss. 00:36:00.49\00:36:04.73 Now a herd of many swine was feeding there on the mountain. 00:36:04.76\00:36:08.10 So they begged Him He would permit them 00:36:08.13\00:36:10.07 to enter into them. 00:36:10.10\00:36:12.60 And He permitted them." 00:36:12.63\00:36:13.97 So what did the demons say? 00:36:14.00\00:36:15.34 Don't just cast us out, 00:36:15.37\00:36:16.71 don't send us out of the country, 00:36:16.74\00:36:18.07 don't send us into the abyss. 00:36:18.11\00:36:19.44 We want to go into the swine. 00:36:19.47\00:36:20.81 They're right over here, 00:36:20.84\00:36:22.18 that's where we want to go. 00:36:22.21\00:36:24.61 And amazingly, what does it say? 00:36:24.65\00:36:27.62 He permitted them. 00:36:27.65\00:36:28.98 Jesus allowed it. 00:36:29.02\00:36:31.29 Takeaway number nine, 00:36:31.32\00:36:32.75 deliverance does not always happen 00:36:32.79\00:36:34.39 the way you and I expect. 00:36:34.42\00:36:38.06 You know, if I were doing this, and I mean this, 00:36:38.09\00:36:42.06 not in a sacrilegious way. 00:36:42.10\00:36:43.57 But if you were doing this, say you were Jesus. 00:36:43.60\00:36:46.13 And I don't mean that disrespectfully. 00:36:46.17\00:36:48.54 But would you say, okay, yeah, 00:36:48.57\00:36:50.24 we'll have the demons come out of this man 00:36:50.27\00:36:51.87 and go into a whole bunch of pigs, 00:36:51.91\00:36:53.51 I wouldn't have expected that. 00:36:53.54\00:36:55.11 That is not what you would naturally think 00:36:55.14\00:36:57.91 would have happened. 00:36:57.95\00:36:59.65 Deliverance does not always happen 00:36:59.68\00:37:01.48 in the way that we expect. 00:37:01.52\00:37:03.39 We kind of put God in a box. 00:37:03.42\00:37:04.75 And we think He has to function in a certain way, 00:37:04.79\00:37:07.92 He has to function in a certain capacity. 00:37:07.96\00:37:10.49 And this is, this is how God's gonna heal me. 00:37:10.53\00:37:13.13 This is how God's gonna deliver me. 00:37:13.16\00:37:15.33 This is what it is going to look like. 00:37:15.36\00:37:17.73 But you know what? 00:37:17.77\00:37:19.10 When Jesus shows up, 00:37:19.13\00:37:20.47 deliverance does not happen 00:37:20.50\00:37:23.20 always the way that we expect. 00:37:23.24\00:37:27.08 Now, this is very interesting to me. 00:37:27.11\00:37:28.48 When I study this passage, 00:37:28.51\00:37:30.18 you would think that Jesus would answer the request 00:37:30.21\00:37:33.52 of His eager follower, would you not? 00:37:33.55\00:37:35.22 Because later, what does the demoniac say? 00:37:35.25\00:37:37.02 Jesus, let me go with you. 00:37:37.05\00:37:39.22 So you would think Jesus would answer that request. 00:37:39.25\00:37:43.02 You would think He would deny the request of the demons 00:37:43.06\00:37:46.56 and He would deny the request of the unbelievers. 00:37:46.59\00:37:49.96 And yet, that's not what we see in the story. 00:37:50.00\00:37:52.73 Jesus agrees to the request of the demons. 00:37:52.77\00:37:57.01 Jesus agrees to the appeal from the townspeople, 00:37:57.04\00:38:00.84 from the unbelievers. 00:38:00.88\00:38:02.44 Later, we'll see, they say, leave our country, 00:38:02.48\00:38:05.48 and He agrees to that. 00:38:05.51\00:38:07.02 And yet Jesus denies the request of the man 00:38:07.05\00:38:10.09 who says, "Please, please just let me go with you." 00:38:10.12\00:38:14.12 And Jesus says, "No." 00:38:14.16\00:38:16.62 It's very interesting to me, 00:38:16.66\00:38:18.73 Jesus granted the appeal of the demons, why? 00:38:18.76\00:38:22.76 I think because their time of final judgment 00:38:22.80\00:38:25.07 and destruction was still in the future. 00:38:25.10\00:38:27.84 We know they will be cast into the lake of fire 00:38:27.87\00:38:30.87 at the end, not to burn forever, 00:38:30.91\00:38:32.54 but to be burned up. 00:38:32.57\00:38:34.51 But that time of judgment has not come yet. 00:38:34.54\00:38:36.98 Until that time comes, 00:38:37.01\00:38:39.21 Ephesians 6:12 tells us, 00:38:39.25\00:38:41.08 we're still going to wrestle. 00:38:41.12\00:38:42.75 We wrestle not against flesh and blood, 00:38:42.78\00:38:46.32 but against principalities, against powers, 00:38:46.35\00:38:48.92 against the rulers of the darkness of this age, 00:38:48.96\00:38:52.23 against spiritual hosts of wickedness 00:38:52.26\00:38:55.53 in heavenly places. 00:38:55.56\00:38:57.67 In other words, 00:38:57.70\00:38:59.50 we are still engaged in the great controversy, 00:38:59.53\00:39:02.14 this battle between good and evil 00:39:02.17\00:39:04.21 between Christ and Satan. 00:39:04.24\00:39:06.54 And demons are still around and still real, 00:39:06.57\00:39:09.44 but our God has victory over them. 00:39:09.48\00:39:14.18 Why did Jesus allow the demons to enter into the swine? 00:39:14.22\00:39:18.39 Now, of course, we know that swine are unclean animals, 00:39:18.42\00:39:21.76 and they entered into these unclean animals. 00:39:21.79\00:39:26.39 I would say a couple of reasons. 00:39:26.43\00:39:27.76 Now, this is Jill's interpretation, 00:39:27.80\00:39:29.20 you might have something different. 00:39:29.23\00:39:30.87 I think it really got the townspeople attention. 00:39:30.90\00:39:33.80 That was their livelihood, 00:39:33.84\00:39:35.57 their pig farming, you could say, 00:39:35.60\00:39:38.34 was very important to the community there. 00:39:38.37\00:39:40.48 And when they ran off the cliff, 00:39:40.51\00:39:41.91 which we'll see in just a moment, 00:39:41.94\00:39:44.31 that had a profound effect on the town. 00:39:44.35\00:39:47.68 That coupled with the demoniac's testimony 00:39:47.72\00:39:52.29 made a big difference in many of the townspeople, 00:39:52.32\00:39:55.69 later making a choice when 00:39:55.72\00:39:57.29 we see Jesus coming back to the community, 00:39:57.33\00:40:00.76 making a choice to accept Jesus. 00:40:00.80\00:40:04.50 People are more important than any livelihood. 00:40:04.53\00:40:09.27 Now Jesus granted the appeal of the townspeople, 00:40:09.30\00:40:11.54 which is really fascinating, too. 00:40:11.57\00:40:13.24 And He granted that 00:40:13.27\00:40:14.94 because He knew that He never forces people. 00:40:14.98\00:40:20.58 You know, they said, "We don't want you." 00:40:20.62\00:40:22.35 And now was Jesus gonna say, "But yes, you do. 00:40:22.38\00:40:24.52 You need to come." No. 00:40:24.55\00:40:25.89 If they said, "We don't want You, 00:40:25.92\00:40:28.46 Jesus, leave, leave our country. 00:40:28.49\00:40:30.89 We don't want anything to do with You." 00:40:30.93\00:40:32.63 What's He gonna say? 00:40:32.66\00:40:34.00 I will respect your free choice. 00:40:34.03\00:40:38.07 We also see Jesus denying the request 00:40:38.10\00:40:40.64 of the healed freed man, 00:40:40.67\00:40:42.44 the man who used to be a demoniac, 00:40:42.47\00:40:43.94 who's now healed. 00:40:43.97\00:40:45.87 But he knew 00:40:45.91\00:40:47.31 that this man would be a witness 00:40:47.34\00:40:52.21 to what Jesus has done, 00:40:52.25\00:40:53.58 and he would testify to other people 00:40:53.62\00:40:55.55 of the deliverance that he had experienced 00:40:55.58\00:40:59.15 through Jesus. 00:40:59.19\00:41:00.52 So let's read the next verse. 00:41:00.56\00:41:01.89 We're in Luke 8:33-34, 00:41:01.92\00:41:03.69 "Then the demons went out of the man 00:41:03.73\00:41:05.86 and entered the swine, 00:41:05.89\00:41:07.30 and the herd ran violently down the steep place 00:41:07.33\00:41:10.37 into the lake and they drowned. 00:41:10.40\00:41:12.53 When those who fed them 00:41:12.57\00:41:14.90 saw what had happened, 00:41:14.94\00:41:17.17 they fled and told it in the city 00:41:17.21\00:41:19.74 and in the country." 00:41:19.77\00:41:21.11 So you can just imagine these caretakers of the swine 00:41:21.14\00:41:23.08 are kind of watching over here, 00:41:23.11\00:41:25.21 what's happening, and they see this demoniac, 00:41:25.25\00:41:28.45 who's raging and mad, 00:41:28.48\00:41:30.25 and yet, all of a sudden, he becomes calm, 00:41:30.29\00:41:32.65 and their pigs go mad, 00:41:32.69\00:41:34.02 and they run off the herd and there's nothing 00:41:34.06\00:41:35.79 the caretakers can do to stop it. 00:41:35.82\00:41:37.66 So they run back to the city and say, 00:41:37.69\00:41:39.26 "Wait a minute, we just lost our livelihood. 00:41:39.29\00:41:41.06 Look at what has happened." 00:41:41.10\00:41:43.26 Now, if you read Mark's account, 00:41:43.30\00:41:44.93 we learned that there was 2000 pigs. 00:41:44.97\00:41:46.67 That's a lot of pigs. 00:41:46.70\00:41:48.04 Two thousand ran off the cliff and into the sea. 00:41:48.07\00:41:51.27 Takeaway number 10, 00:41:51.31\00:41:53.64 deliverance is never kept a secret. 00:41:53.68\00:41:56.95 What happened to this man was about to be told 00:41:56.98\00:41:59.58 to the entire countryside. 00:41:59.61\00:42:01.95 You know Romans 1:16, I love this verse, 00:42:01.98\00:42:04.15 "I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, 00:42:04.19\00:42:07.12 for it is the power of God to salvation 00:42:07.16\00:42:09.89 for everyone who believes, 00:42:09.92\00:42:12.69 for the Jew first and also for the Greek." 00:42:12.73\00:42:17.17 I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ. 00:42:17.20\00:42:20.57 Deliverance is never kept a secret. 00:42:20.60\00:42:23.10 When Jesus has set you free, 00:42:23.14\00:42:25.47 you want to go and tell. 00:42:25.51\00:42:27.64 And when Jesus sets you free, 00:42:27.68\00:42:30.38 other people see that, 00:42:30.41\00:42:33.08 other people experience that. 00:42:33.11\00:42:34.88 Remember in Luke Chapter 5, we are in Luke 8. 00:42:34.92\00:42:37.05 But if you jump back a couple chapters, 00:42:37.09\00:42:39.05 and you look at Luke Chapter 5, 00:42:39.09\00:42:40.42 we see the healing of a leper. 00:42:40.46\00:42:41.79 And what did Jesus tell this man? 00:42:41.82\00:42:45.26 Don't tell anybody that I have just healed you. 00:42:45.29\00:42:50.47 We see that in Luke 5:15, 00:42:50.50\00:42:52.60 when the report, but the man didn't keep quiet, 00:42:52.63\00:42:55.50 because in Luke 5:15, 00:42:55.54\00:42:56.87 we see, "When the report went around 00:42:56.91\00:42:58.67 concerning Him all the more, 00:42:58.71\00:43:02.08 great multitudes came together to hear and to be healed by Him 00:43:02.11\00:43:06.88 of their infirmities." 00:43:06.92\00:43:08.68 So the leper didn't keep his mouth shut. 00:43:08.72\00:43:10.42 And he told and then the report went out tremendously 00:43:10.45\00:43:13.56 and more people came forward to see 00:43:13.59\00:43:16.56 because deliverance is never kept a secret. 00:43:16.59\00:43:20.20 When Jesus has healed you, others know. 00:43:20.23\00:43:22.86 We see the healing of the leper in Luke 8 and then later, 00:43:22.90\00:43:26.17 we see when the healing of the paralytic, 00:43:26.20\00:43:28.10 there were so many people, 00:43:28.14\00:43:29.54 because Jesus' fame had gone abroad around Galilee. 00:43:29.57\00:43:33.41 There were so many people who had heard about Jesus 00:43:33.44\00:43:37.51 who wanted to see, 00:43:37.55\00:43:38.88 who wanted to be touched, 00:43:38.91\00:43:40.25 who wanted to be healed, 00:43:40.28\00:43:41.62 who wanted to be delivered, 00:43:41.65\00:43:43.28 that they could not even fit in the house 00:43:43.32\00:43:45.32 and they had to remember open up the roof 00:43:45.35\00:43:47.16 and let the paralytic down through the roof. 00:43:47.19\00:43:49.92 The woman who was caught in adultery, 00:43:49.96\00:43:51.83 all the religious leaders knew 00:43:51.86\00:43:54.76 that Jesus was setting her free. 00:43:54.80\00:43:57.63 Lazarus, when he was resurrected, 00:43:57.67\00:43:59.30 what happened when he was resurrected? 00:43:59.33\00:44:01.87 As a result, the fame of that miracle 00:44:01.90\00:44:04.77 of His resurrection was so great 00:44:04.81\00:44:06.84 that Jesus was later arrested and tried. 00:44:06.88\00:44:09.38 Deliverance is never kept a secret. 00:44:09.41\00:44:13.08 Let's read the next two verses. 00:44:13.11\00:44:14.45 We're in Luke 8:35-36. 00:44:14.48\00:44:16.48 Then they went out, this is the townspeople 00:44:16.52\00:44:18.39 who heard about the deliverance 00:44:18.42\00:44:19.75 and the pigs going off the cliff. 00:44:19.79\00:44:21.92 "They went out to see what had happened, 00:44:21.96\00:44:23.29 they came to Jesus, and found the man 00:44:23.32\00:44:25.09 from whom the demons had departed." 00:44:25.13\00:44:26.73 I love this. 00:44:26.76\00:44:28.10 This is my favorite part of the whole story. 00:44:28.13\00:44:29.90 What was the man doing? 00:44:29.93\00:44:31.27 Cutting himself. 00:44:31.30\00:44:32.63 Was he in the tombs? 00:44:32.67\00:44:34.00 Was he naked? 00:44:34.04\00:44:35.37 Was he based in shame? 00:44:35.40\00:44:36.84 Or did he wish he were dead? 00:44:36.87\00:44:38.57 Was he still self inflicting abuse, self harming himself? 00:44:38.61\00:44:42.61 No, no, no. 00:44:42.64\00:44:43.98 "He was sitting at the feet of Jesus, 00:44:44.01\00:44:46.38 clothed and in his right mind. 00:44:46.41\00:44:51.25 And they were afraid. 00:44:51.29\00:44:54.09 They also who had seen it told them by what means 00:44:54.12\00:44:56.79 he who had been demon-possessed was healed." 00:44:56.83\00:44:59.33 Takeaway number 11, 00:44:59.36\00:45:00.73 deliverance always changes us. 00:45:00.76\00:45:04.43 The demon-possessed man was now whole. 00:45:04.47\00:45:06.50 He was sitting, he was clothed. 00:45:06.53\00:45:08.50 He was in his right mind. 00:45:08.54\00:45:10.21 You see, when God gets a hold of us, 00:45:10.24\00:45:11.87 when God delivers me, 00:45:11.91\00:45:13.24 when God delivers you, what happens? 00:45:13.27\00:45:16.28 He heals us physically. 00:45:16.31\00:45:17.71 He heals us mentally. 00:45:17.75\00:45:19.55 He heals us emotionally. Most important, 00:45:19.58\00:45:22.92 He heals us spiritually. 00:45:22.95\00:45:25.05 That demon-possessed man was now made whole. 00:45:25.09\00:45:29.32 Deliverance, it always changes us. 00:45:29.36\00:45:33.43 I remember Monday nights was our night 00:45:33.46\00:45:35.60 going in to give Bible studies in the jail. 00:45:35.63\00:45:37.27 And I remember this one particular woman. 00:45:37.30\00:45:39.37 We were talking about the change 00:45:39.40\00:45:40.74 that Jesus makes in our lives, 00:45:40.77\00:45:42.60 and how He can take 00:45:42.64\00:45:44.24 what once was sick and stony heart. 00:45:44.27\00:45:49.14 What once we were crawling in the mire, 00:45:49.18\00:45:51.51 in the muck of sin, 00:45:51.55\00:45:52.88 what once was bound in addictions, 00:45:52.91\00:45:55.48 and He can set us free. 00:45:55.52\00:45:57.25 And I remember one of the women there, 00:45:57.29\00:45:59.05 and she looked up, I can't remember her name. 00:45:59.09\00:46:00.72 It's been several years, but she looked up at me 00:46:00.76\00:46:02.59 and she said, "Jesus has set me free, 00:46:02.62\00:46:05.39 and He has changed me." 00:46:05.43\00:46:08.40 But I wish you all could see in. 00:46:08.43\00:46:10.80 And the truth was, 00:46:10.83\00:46:12.17 we told her it is so evident, 00:46:12.20\00:46:13.80 it is so apparent that Jesus has set you free 00:46:13.84\00:46:17.54 and that Jesus has changed you. 00:46:17.57\00:46:19.37 Because I remember 00:46:19.41\00:46:20.74 when she would come into Bible study before, 00:46:20.78\00:46:23.18 she was afraid, 00:46:23.21\00:46:24.55 and she would cower in the corner, 00:46:24.58\00:46:26.18 and her face was dark. 00:46:26.21\00:46:27.95 You know how people's face looks 00:46:27.98\00:46:29.52 when they're clouded by sin? 00:46:29.55\00:46:31.35 Their eyes look when there's guilt 00:46:31.39\00:46:33.99 and condemnation and shame. 00:46:34.02\00:46:36.32 You know how people look after years of use and abuse. 00:46:36.36\00:46:40.80 That's how she used to look, 00:46:40.83\00:46:42.53 but she didn't look that way anymore. 00:46:42.56\00:46:44.33 When you looked at her face, there was joy 00:46:44.37\00:46:46.50 and there was peace on her countenance 00:46:46.53\00:46:48.70 and she smiled. 00:46:48.74\00:46:50.07 There was assurance in her eyes. 00:46:50.11\00:46:53.31 You know why? 00:46:53.34\00:46:54.91 Because deliverance always changes us. 00:46:54.94\00:46:58.68 Now, she didn't know that she'd been changed. 00:46:58.71\00:47:01.08 She didn't see that she'd been changed, 00:47:01.12\00:47:03.59 but we saw, 00:47:03.62\00:47:04.95 the evidence was apparent that she had been changed. 00:47:04.99\00:47:10.29 Takeaway number 12, 00:47:10.33\00:47:11.66 we also get this from the same verses we just read. 00:47:11.69\00:47:13.40 Takeaway number 12, 00:47:13.43\00:47:14.76 deliverance causes fear in others. 00:47:14.80\00:47:16.70 It was very interesting to me 00:47:16.73\00:47:18.07 'cause here's the demoniac 00:47:18.10\00:47:19.43 sitting clothed in his right mind. 00:47:19.47\00:47:23.37 And what were the townspeople? 00:47:23.41\00:47:25.17 It said, they were afraid. 00:47:25.21\00:47:30.05 Deliverance causes fear in others, not always, 00:47:30.08\00:47:34.72 but it can cause fear in others. 00:47:34.75\00:47:38.19 Why were they afraid? 00:47:38.22\00:47:39.92 You know, we really like the status quo. 00:47:39.95\00:47:41.52 Have you noticed that? 00:47:41.56\00:47:43.02 We like no changes. 00:47:43.06\00:47:45.79 Why were they afraid? 00:47:45.83\00:47:47.16 Maybe they were afraid because they just lost 00:47:47.20\00:47:48.53 their livelihood, the 2000 pigs went off the cliff. 00:47:48.56\00:47:51.47 Maybe they were afraid because they'd never seen 00:47:51.50\00:47:53.23 anyone before who had power to control demons. 00:47:53.27\00:47:57.14 Maybe they were afraid 00:47:57.17\00:47:58.74 because they thought Jesus was coming to make changes 00:47:58.77\00:48:00.74 in their lives and they weren't ready for that. 00:48:00.78\00:48:04.81 You know, anytime Jesus enters the room, 00:48:04.85\00:48:09.38 anytime Jesus enters someone's life, 00:48:09.42\00:48:13.66 you and I are forced with the decision as well. 00:48:13.69\00:48:16.39 What are we going to do with Jesus? 00:48:16.42\00:48:18.03 Are we going to make the same decision 00:48:18.06\00:48:20.16 that the demoniac made to be healed, 00:48:20.20\00:48:22.20 to be transformed, to be set free, 00:48:22.23\00:48:24.37 to be delivered? 00:48:24.40\00:48:26.07 Are we going to continue in our own sin? 00:48:26.10\00:48:30.07 1 Corinthians 1:23-24. 00:48:30.11\00:48:33.21 Paul's talking here, he says, 00:48:33.24\00:48:34.94 "We preach Christ crucified, 00:48:34.98\00:48:38.11 to the Jews as a stumbling block." 00:48:38.15\00:48:39.71 Why was it a stumbling block? 00:48:39.75\00:48:41.08 Because they were taught from Deuteronomy, 00:48:41.12\00:48:42.52 cursed is anyone who hangs on a tree. 00:48:42.55\00:48:45.45 So they thought Jesus was under a curse, 00:48:45.49\00:48:47.52 and he was to be blasphemed. 00:48:47.56\00:48:48.92 And they had an issue with that. 00:48:48.96\00:48:51.29 "To the Jews a stumbling block, 00:48:51.33\00:48:52.66 it was difficult for them to accept Jesus as the Messiah, 00:48:52.69\00:48:56.63 to the Greeks foolishness, 00:48:56.67\00:48:59.40 but to those who are called both Jews and Greeks, 00:48:59.43\00:49:02.04 Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God." 00:49:02.07\00:49:06.68 You see Galatians 4:4, 00:49:06.71\00:49:08.04 "When the fullness of time was come, 00:49:08.08\00:49:10.95 God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, 00:49:10.98\00:49:14.15 born under the law to redeem those, 00:49:14.18\00:49:16.82 that's you and I who are under the law." 00:49:16.85\00:49:19.25 You see, it's time for deliverance. 00:49:19.29\00:49:21.56 It's time for a deliverer, that deliverer, 00:49:21.59\00:49:25.49 that person is the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:49:25.53\00:49:28.16 So let's read our next verse, we're in Luke 8:37. 00:49:28.20\00:49:30.60 We're almost done with the story. 00:49:30.63\00:49:32.13 Luke 8:37, 00:49:32.17\00:49:34.04 "Then the whole multitude of the surrounding region 00:49:34.07\00:49:36.87 of the Gadarenes asked Him, 00:49:36.91\00:49:38.64 that's Jesus, to depart from them, 00:49:38.67\00:49:41.01 for they were seized with great fear. 00:49:41.04\00:49:44.58 And He got into the boat and returned." 00:49:44.61\00:49:48.15 Takeaway number 13, 00:49:48.18\00:49:50.29 deliverance of one reveals the dominion of others. 00:49:50.32\00:49:56.26 Now what do I mean by that? 00:49:56.29\00:49:57.69 The demoniac was set free, 00:49:57.73\00:49:59.29 the demoniac was delivered. 00:49:59.33\00:50:01.83 His deliverance, 00:50:01.86\00:50:03.47 all of a sudden revealed that the townspeople, 00:50:03.50\00:50:06.30 they needed deliverance too. 00:50:06.33\00:50:08.27 They needed Jesus too. 00:50:08.30\00:50:09.67 Now their sin did not look the same 00:50:09.70\00:50:12.74 as that of the demoniac. 00:50:12.77\00:50:14.98 The demoniac was cutting and he lived in tombs, 00:50:15.01\00:50:17.35 and he had all these problems, and he broke chains, 00:50:17.38\00:50:20.18 and he was a wild, crazy person. 00:50:20.22\00:50:22.25 And you would say, oh, clearly, he's a sinner. 00:50:22.28\00:50:23.82 Clearly, he's lost in addiction. 00:50:23.85\00:50:25.69 And the townspeople thought they were respectable, 00:50:25.72\00:50:27.96 and they thought that they were maybe even good Christians. 00:50:27.99\00:50:32.49 And yet, the demoniac's deliverance 00:50:32.53\00:50:36.53 revealed that these townspeople were still, 00:50:36.56\00:50:40.67 they themselves were under the dominion of Satan. 00:50:40.70\00:50:45.54 The demon-possessed man clearly needed deliverance, 00:50:45.57\00:50:48.01 but the people from his village 00:50:48.04\00:50:49.38 they needed deliverance just as much. 00:50:49.41\00:50:52.35 Did you notice this was in Mark, 00:50:52.38\00:50:53.92 you can find that in Mark 5:10. 00:50:53.95\00:50:56.79 This is a demon speaking to Jesus. 00:50:56.82\00:50:58.95 They begged Him earnestly, 00:50:58.99\00:51:00.46 Jesus, that He would not send them out of the country. 00:51:00.49\00:51:03.09 So that tells me 00:51:03.12\00:51:04.66 that the demons were at home in that country. 00:51:04.69\00:51:07.36 They weren't just at home in the demoniac. 00:51:07.40\00:51:09.60 They were at home in the country, 00:51:09.63\00:51:11.03 because when they left the demoniac, they said, 00:51:11.07\00:51:12.50 "Please don't send us out of the country," 00:51:12.53\00:51:14.00 because they were at home. 00:51:14.04\00:51:15.37 They had settled down and taken up residence. 00:51:15.40\00:51:18.24 The people, the townspeople were more concerned 00:51:18.27\00:51:21.61 about the loss of the swine 00:51:21.64\00:51:23.91 than about the healing of the demoniac. 00:51:23.95\00:51:26.82 They begged Jesus to leave. 00:51:26.85\00:51:28.88 Now clearly, they were afraid of legion. 00:51:28.92\00:51:30.45 They were afraid of the demons 00:51:30.49\00:51:31.82 because they tried to bind the man in with chains and fetters, 00:51:31.85\00:51:35.32 and, of course, it didn't work, 00:51:35.36\00:51:36.69 but they were afraid of the man and yet, 00:51:36.73\00:51:39.43 they were even more afraid of Jesus. 00:51:39.46\00:51:41.76 They were afraid of the demon, 00:51:41.80\00:51:43.13 but they were more afraid of Jesus and they said, 00:51:43.16\00:51:45.13 "Please get out. 00:51:45.17\00:51:46.80 Leave our country." 00:51:46.84\00:51:49.37 The last two verses, Luke 8:38-39, 00:51:49.40\00:51:54.14 "Now the man from whom the demons 00:51:54.18\00:51:55.71 had departed begged Him." 00:51:55.74\00:51:57.38 He begged Jesus, please I want to be with You. 00:51:57.41\00:52:01.62 But Jesus sent him away, why? 00:52:01.65\00:52:05.19 Saying, in verse 39, 00:52:05.22\00:52:07.09 "'Return to your own house, 00:52:07.12\00:52:08.99 and tell what great things God has done for you.' 00:52:09.02\00:52:12.93 And he went his way 00:52:12.96\00:52:14.30 and proclaimed throughout the whole city 00:52:14.33\00:52:15.73 what great things Jesus had done for him.'" 00:52:15.76\00:52:18.03 Now Mark, I like how Mark expresses it, 00:52:18.07\00:52:20.14 Mark 5, halfway through verse 19. 00:52:20.17\00:52:23.04 It says, "Go home to your friends..." 00:52:23.07\00:52:24.64 This is Jesus speaking to the demoniac again. 00:52:24.67\00:52:26.98 "Go home to your friends, tell them what great things 00:52:27.01\00:52:29.34 the Lord has done for you, and how He had," 00:52:29.38\00:52:32.21 what's the word? 00:52:32.25\00:52:33.58 "Compassion on you." 00:52:33.62\00:52:35.28 I love that. 00:52:35.32\00:52:36.65 The compassion of our God, the love of our God, 00:52:36.69\00:52:39.45 Jesus who said, "I have compassion on you. 00:52:39.49\00:52:42.09 Yes, you're lost in sin, 00:52:42.12\00:52:43.56 yes, you're lost in addiction, 00:52:43.59\00:52:44.96 but I want to deliver you." 00:52:44.99\00:52:47.13 And he departed. 00:52:47.16\00:52:48.50 This is the demoniac, who's now healed, 00:52:48.53\00:52:50.57 who's now delivered. 00:52:50.60\00:52:52.63 "He departed and began to proclaim in Decapolis 00:52:52.67\00:52:56.00 all that Jesus had done for him, and they marveled." 00:52:56.04\00:53:00.28 Now, Decapolis comes from two words Deca meaning 10, 00:53:00.31\00:53:03.55 Polis meaning city. 00:53:03.58\00:53:04.91 So this is 10 Gentile cities in that region, 00:53:04.95\00:53:08.62 on the eastern side of the shore 00:53:08.65\00:53:10.82 of the Sea of Galilee. 00:53:10.85\00:53:12.89 And this man, 00:53:12.92\00:53:14.26 this man who had once been bound in addiction, 00:53:14.29\00:53:16.56 this man who needed deliverance, 00:53:16.59\00:53:18.29 who had experienced deliverance, 00:53:18.33\00:53:20.76 went to the 10 surrounding Gentile cities 00:53:20.80\00:53:23.93 telling them what? 00:53:23.97\00:53:25.30 What Jesus had done for him. 00:53:25.33\00:53:28.34 Our last and final takeaway. 00:53:28.37\00:53:30.37 Takeaway number 14, 00:53:30.41\00:53:32.87 delivered people share deliverance. 00:53:32.91\00:53:37.45 That's what the demoniac did. 00:53:37.48\00:53:39.01 He was delivered, 00:53:39.05\00:53:40.95 and then he shared that deliverance with someone else. 00:53:40.98\00:53:46.55 You and I can only share what we have experienced. 00:53:46.59\00:53:51.69 The word martus, 00:53:51.73\00:53:53.06 we mentioned at the beginning, I told you, we come back to it. 00:53:53.09\00:53:54.96 The word martus in the Greek is, 00:53:55.00\00:53:58.17 it's the word witness in English, 00:53:58.20\00:54:00.37 and it's in Greek, it's martus. 00:54:00.40\00:54:03.14 But the word doesn't just mean witness as you and I 00:54:03.17\00:54:05.47 would consider a witness. 00:54:05.51\00:54:06.91 It literally means an eye or an ear witness. 00:54:06.94\00:54:12.68 In other words, you and I are to share 00:54:12.71\00:54:15.42 what we've seen, what we've heard, 00:54:15.45\00:54:18.35 what we've experienced of the deliverance of Jesus. 00:54:18.39\00:54:23.02 Let's turn to 1 John, 00:54:23.06\00:54:24.39 this is our last scripture. 00:54:24.43\00:54:25.76 1 John Chapter 1. 00:54:25.79\00:54:28.00 I love this passage. 00:54:28.03\00:54:30.07 1 John Chapter 1. 00:54:30.10\00:54:31.43 Now, John, clearly John, the beloved apostle, 00:54:31.47\00:54:34.60 disciple, he was an eyewitness, and an ear witness. 00:54:34.64\00:54:39.04 He was a martus of the Lord Jesus Christ, 00:54:39.07\00:54:42.18 because he walked and talked to Jesus for three years 00:54:42.21\00:54:44.35 when He was on this earth. 00:54:44.38\00:54:45.78 We're in 1 John 1, 00:54:45.81\00:54:47.15 "That which was from the beginning, 00:54:47.18\00:54:48.52 which we have heard..." 00:54:48.55\00:54:49.98 The Greek means to give in the audience of, meaning, 00:54:50.02\00:54:52.65 he just didn't hear it secondhand, 00:54:52.69\00:54:54.99 he didn't hear about Jesus from a cousin 00:54:55.02\00:54:57.26 or from a mother or someone else. 00:54:57.29\00:54:59.23 He actually was there on the Sermon on the Mount. 00:54:59.26\00:55:02.33 He heard Jesus' voice with his own ears, 00:55:02.36\00:55:05.70 he was there on the boat, 00:55:05.73\00:55:07.74 the Sea of Galilee, when Jesus said, 00:55:07.77\00:55:09.70 "Peace, be still." 00:55:09.74\00:55:11.41 "He heard him, 00:55:11.44\00:55:12.91 which we have seen with our eyes, 00:55:12.94\00:55:15.24 which we have looked upon and our hands have handled." 00:55:15.28\00:55:17.88 Literally means to verify by touch, 00:55:17.91\00:55:20.15 I touched Jesus, I felt Him, 00:55:20.18\00:55:22.08 I walked with Him, I experienced Jesus. 00:55:22.12\00:55:25.75 Jump down to verse 3, 00:55:25.79\00:55:27.12 "That which we have seen and heard 00:55:27.16\00:55:28.76 we declare to you, 00:55:28.79\00:55:30.56 that you also may have fellowship with us, 00:55:30.59\00:55:33.83 and truly our fellowship is with the Father 00:55:33.86\00:55:35.86 and with His Son Jesus Christ." 00:55:35.90\00:55:37.23 So what's John saying? 00:55:37.27\00:55:38.60 That which I've seen, that which I've heard, 00:55:38.63\00:55:40.44 that which I've touched, that which I have experienced, 00:55:40.47\00:55:44.04 that's what I'm sharing with you. 00:55:44.07\00:55:45.97 Because delivered people, 00:55:46.01\00:55:47.64 they share deliverance. 00:55:47.68\00:55:49.84 What are those 14 takeaways? 00:55:49.88\00:55:52.38 Deliverance is for everyone. 00:55:52.41\00:55:54.92 It's for you. 00:55:54.95\00:55:56.28 Deliverance is for those 00:55:56.32\00:55:57.65 who have been bound the longest. 00:55:57.69\00:56:01.02 It's for those who struggle with sin and shame. 00:56:01.06\00:56:04.49 It's for those who cannot even express what's in their heart, 00:56:04.53\00:56:07.43 but yet so long for deliverance. 00:56:07.46\00:56:10.50 It's for those who other people 00:56:10.53\00:56:12.33 and other methods have failed to control. 00:56:12.37\00:56:15.40 It's for those who self harm. 00:56:15.44\00:56:18.37 It's for those who feel they are dead, 00:56:18.41\00:56:21.84 or wish they were dead. 00:56:21.88\00:56:23.41 It's for those who are overwhelmed 00:56:23.45\00:56:25.25 or controlled. 00:56:25.28\00:56:26.61 It's for those who need Him the most. 00:56:26.65\00:56:30.29 Deliverance does not always happen the way we expect. 00:56:30.32\00:56:32.82 It is never kept a secret. 00:56:32.85\00:56:35.62 It always changes us 00:56:35.66\00:56:37.33 and impacts the lives of those around us. 00:56:37.36\00:56:40.66 Deliverance of one reveals dominion in other people, 00:56:40.70\00:56:45.23 and delivered people share deliverance. 00:56:45.27\00:56:49.57 In 1947, 00:56:49.60\00:56:50.94 Robert Pierce went to China 00:56:50.97\00:56:53.01 and he was touched by the widespread hunger 00:56:53.04\00:56:56.34 specifically in the children that he saw there. 00:56:56.38\00:56:59.61 And he wrote in the flyleaf of his Bible, 00:56:59.65\00:57:02.05 "Let my heart be broken 00:57:02.08\00:57:05.15 with the things that break the heart of God." 00:57:05.19\00:57:09.02 So I want to ask you today, 00:57:09.06\00:57:11.13 it is time for deliverance. 00:57:11.16\00:57:14.46 Do you want to experience deliverance in your life 00:57:14.50\00:57:17.53 and in your heart? 00:57:17.57\00:57:18.90 And do you want to share that deliverance 00:57:18.93\00:57:23.17 with someone else? 00:57:23.20\00:57:24.67 Ask God, "Let my heart be broken 00:57:24.71\00:57:27.84 with the things that break the heart of God." 00:57:27.88\00:57:30.98
