You know, if you ask
100 men on the street,

what is surrender mean?

They're all gonna
say, "Oh, defeat."

Or at least that's
the number one answer.

Surrender is defeat.

Hands up, that's it.

You ask 100 women on the street,

what is defeat, surrender?

And they will say,

"Oh, somebody is
going to control me."

Surrender is one of those words
in the Christian vernacular.

We toss it around quite a bit.

But it's not
actually in the Bible.

The concept is
just like incarnation

is not in the Bible.

Trinity is not in the
Bible, but the concepts are.

In the Christian vernacular,

the word surrender
represents victory.

It represents power.

And I think it's hard
for us to recognize that

because there's
so few Christians

who are truly surrendered.

That's not a
judgmental statement.

It's just a
painfully obvious condition

of the church.

A.W. Tozer made a
comment something like this.

"If the Holy Spirit were removed

church does would continue.

Spirit had been withdrawn

You know, it's
really a sad thing.

I think we've
played church too long.

Some Christians
are busy with service,

but they don't have
an intimate prayer life

or a relationship with the Lord.

Some Christians feel defeated.

And they're angry with God.

Some Christians feel
like they've hit a wall,

and there's a barrier
between them and the Lord.

Many Christians are
carnal, lukewarm Christians,

and some love the
things of this world.

And they have an
apathetic attitude

toward their
spiritual condition.

I just want to tell you,

it doesn't have to be this way.

We need to ask ourselves,

what is preventing me
from surrendering to the Lord?

And, you know, I remember once

I was quoting 2
Corinthians 3:18,

as an affirmation,
00:03:42.12\00:03:43.45
I was praying back to
the Lord and I was going,

"Oh, Father, thank You,
00:03:45.25\00:03:46.92
that You are leading
me by the Holy Spirit
00:03:46.96\00:03:49.36
from one level of your
glory, which is His character,
00:03:49.39\00:03:52.56
from one level of
Your glory to the next."
00:03:52.59\00:03:54.90
And all of a sudden, in my mind,
00:03:54.93\00:03:57.30
I saw this huge staircase,
it went all the way to heaven.

And the steps
were like 60 feet high,

while I'm
running along on a step,
00:04:05.97\00:04:09.51
maybe a third of the way up.
00:04:09.54\00:04:11.55
And as I'm running,

I'm looking
back over my shoulder

and then wham, I hit the wall.

I didn't know it was
wall till I was saying,

"Lord, what is preventing
me from surrendering?"
00:04:23.46\00:04:28.16
And what the Lord
impressed upon my mind was this.

I will soon explain

the wall of
resistance that you're hitting.
00:04:33.00\00:04:35.30
And I thought,
yes, that's what it is.

I feel like I'm
hitting a wall of resistance.

So I prayed, and I prayed,
00:04:41.41\00:04:44.15
and I prayed for
a couple of weeks.
00:04:44.18\00:04:45.98
Lord, what is this
wall of resistance?
00:04:46.01\00:04:48.98
And you know what?

The Lord said to me,
listen to what I'm saying

because this is powerful.

He said,
00:04:55.99\00:04:57.33
"The wall of resistance
00:04:57.36\00:04:59.46
that you are hitting
is self preservation."

What?

See, what I was hitting
was actually the next step.

It was front of that next step.
00:05:12.37\00:05:15.48
For me to become
more like Christ,

for any of us to
become more like Christ,

we have to give up
a little more of self.

And we hit that
wall of resistance,

we hit that place
where we're like, now, Lord,

I don't want to give this up.

But the Lord also
showed me, in my mind,

he showed me a huge
elephant, little ant.

This was the time and He said,

"Child, when I
asked you to surrender,

I'm not asking you
to do it in your power.
00:05:44.47\00:05:47.48
Your power is like
that of the little ant
00:05:47.51\00:05:49.51
where's my power is
like this of the elephant."
00:05:49.54\00:05:53.31
He said, "Draw on My
power, Be yoked to me."
00:05:53.35\00:05:57.55
And that's what
surrender is all about.

When I first learned to
cooperate with the Lord,
00:06:02.22\00:06:07.16
and I was surrendering
for the first time in my life,
00:06:07.20\00:06:12.27
really, I think
there was a notice,
00:06:12.30\00:06:15.70
noticeable
transformation in my life.
00:06:15.74\00:06:19.24
And my husband
came to me and he said,
00:06:19.27\00:06:22.14
"What's going on? I
want what you've got."
00:06:22.18\00:06:26.05
But even though God had given me
00:06:26.08\00:06:28.15
a teaching on surrender,
00:06:28.18\00:06:29.82
I believed to that,
00:06:29.85\00:06:31.65
it was over his head somehow.
00:06:31.69\00:06:34.12
I mean, I
explained it for months,
00:06:34.16\00:06:36.99
but it was just like
almost on a daily basis.
00:06:37.03\00:06:40.43
He kept saying, I
don't understand surrender.
00:06:40.46\00:06:43.73
Explain it to me, and
I poorly explained it.
00:06:43.77\00:06:48.37
So when God gave me
the title for this message,
00:06:48.40\00:06:53.38
I had to come up with a title.
00:06:53.41\00:06:55.41
Nearly a week
ago, I gave a title.
00:06:55.44\00:06:58.61
But then, as I began
to write the message,
00:06:58.65\00:07:01.62
the Lord impressed me.
00:07:01.65\00:07:03.02
He wasn't in it.
00:07:03.05\00:07:04.39
And I went to bed one night,
00:07:04.42\00:07:05.75
and I prayed and
prayed and prayed.
00:07:05.79\00:07:07.19
And I said,
00:07:07.22\00:07:08.56
"Lord, I want You to
give me what You want.
00:07:08.59\00:07:13.19
How do You explain surrender?"
00:07:13.23\00:07:16.70
So here are the three steps
00:07:16.73\00:07:20.77
that I woke up the next morning,
00:07:20.80\00:07:23.14
and these steps were on my mind,
00:07:23.17\00:07:25.27
I jumped out of bed,
and I wrote them down,

because I believe
what God has given me
00:07:27.61\00:07:31.01
is a perfect
explanation of surrender.
00:07:31.05\00:07:34.45
You can't surrender
00:07:34.48\00:07:35.82
if you don't know
what it's all about.
00:07:35.85\00:07:37.79
And so, these three steps
00:07:37.82\00:07:41.29
are to simplify and clarify
00:07:41.32\00:07:46.06
the process of surrender.
00:07:46.09\00:07:48.70
Step one is to know God.
00:07:48.73\00:07:53.74
And this isn't head knowledge.
00:07:53.77\00:07:56.44
This is heart knowledge.
00:07:56.47\00:07:58.07
This is
understanding God's love,

and letting it be an
experiential knowledge.

So step one is no God.

Step two is stop resisting
00:08:09.15\00:08:13.82
and submit.

Stop resisting His love,

and submit to His authority.

And step three is
yield to the leading

of the Holy Spirit.

You know, I believe that

this explains or
defines surrender.

It's kind of like I
knew these things in my mind,
00:08:41.18\00:08:44.35
but it wasn't the
way I was explaining.
00:08:44.39\00:08:46.49
And I think these three steps
define the process of surrender
00:08:46.52\00:08:52.16
in the most simple way
00:08:52.19\00:08:53.53
that I've ever
heard them expressed.

But I don't want to
leave anyone with the idea
00:08:55.86\00:08:59.07
that the process
of surrender is easy.

It's not.

It's difficult.

It's a daily struggle.

Now, I will say,

the more you learn
to walk in surrender,

the easier it becomes,

but it isn't a
once for all type thing.

I was sharing in the greenroom

actually a story
of when I was writing,

exalting His Word.

And I only had 17
days to write a book,

didn't have an outline.

I told my sister, she was in...

I was running the ministry
from the home at the time,

and was getting
ready to do a program here

at 3ABN called
exalting His Word.

So I told my sister,

honey, I've only got 17
days to write this book.

You can't be calling
me all throughout the day.

I'll call you
every day at 5 o'clock.

Don't call me
unless it's an emergency.

Well, the phone rings you know,
I would get up in the morning.

And I'd pray from
like five to seven,

then I'd start working.

And my sister just
kept calling and calling.

So about the fourth day of this.

She called about 10 o'clock
in the morning and I said,

wanted to talk with you."

"Honey, I can't

I'll talk to you at five."

And I hung up.

Then about 1 o'clock,
she called again, and I said,

"Is this an emergency?"

"No, no, I just want to hear
your voice and talk to you."

I said, "Honey,
please understand,

So she calls back at 3 o'clock.

"Is this an emergency?"

"Nope."

I said to her,

"Honey, I cannot
talk to you right now.

you're interrupting the
process of my thoughts."

And she said to me in
a very melodramatic way,

"That's fine.

I just don't
have a sister anymore.

You don't love me."

And when she
did, I was offended.

And I said,

"I don't love you.
00:11:13.00\00:11:15.20
You don't love me,
00:11:15.24\00:11:16.60
you have no
respect for my boundaries.
00:11:16.64\00:11:19.37
You don't care
what's going on in my life.
00:11:19.41\00:11:21.68
You only want
to do it your way."

And da-da-da-da-da.

Well, we hung up.

I got busy typing away.

And about five
or six pages later,

I realized what I was
writing was scriptural.

But there was
no anointing in it.

And the Lord
impressed me, you know what?

I had to call her.

And I had to apologize

for allowing my flesh
00:11:49.40\00:11:54.58
to rear its ugly head.

In other words,

I had been completely
surrendered to the Lord

that day, I
prayed, I surrendered.

But the repeated
annoyance of someone

who is not
cooperating, I got offended.
00:12:08.79\00:12:13.16
And you know what
the Lord taught me once.

The spirit of offence
is the spirit of pride.
00:12:15.43\00:12:19.53
Think about that for a minute.
00:12:19.57\00:12:21.60
You can't be offended
unless your pride rears up.
00:12:21.64\00:12:27.14
You're offended because
you're not getting your way,
00:12:27.18\00:12:29.48
someone's not listening to,
00:12:29.51\00:12:31.01
you feel like
somebody's using you,
00:12:31.05\00:12:32.91
you feel, whatever it
is, that pushes your button.

It's a pride issue.

And the Lord told me,

the spirit of pride is
a spirit of Antichrist.

So, boy, that's something
we all need to think about.

You see there's
this cosmic conflict

that's going on ever
since Adam and Eve fell.

There's a conflict
between selfishness and love,

between pride and humility.

There's this contest
between evil and good.

And did you know what?

We may not realize it,

but we are all surrendered
at one point or another,

to one side or the other.

Listen to what Romans 6:16 says.

Paul writes,

"Do you not know

that to whom you present
yourselves slaves to obey,

you are that one's
slaves whom you obey."

I like what the King
James Version says, it says,

"Do you not know
that to whom you yield,

you are slaves to that thing."

And then he goes on.

He says,

"We can either be
yielded or slaves to obey sin

that leads to death,

or obedience that
leads to righteousness."

We're either yielding to
our own sinful inclinations,

and letting sin drag us
around by hooking our nose,

or we are yielding

to the lover of our souls.

The Lord, who, whose

There is a sign
to yield and it's,

you see it placed

where there's
intersections and it governs,

who has the right
of way to turn first

and to lead out on that path.

Now, when we think
of yielding to the Lord

daily, hourly,

we come to intersections.

In the school of life,
it is a constant thing.

We need to learn to yield,

That's what it's all about.

of redemption in mind

going to have to come down

You know, the Bible
says that God never changes.

"Jesus is the same
yesterday, today and forever."

My mother, we grew up
in a New Testament Church.

And we didn't
study the Old Testament.

Well, my mother would
read the Old Testament,

but she read it through
a lens of misunderstanding.
00:17:34.95\00:17:39.42
And what she saw
was an angry God.

And so, when she
kind of, I guess,

gave me that
impression, as did my church,

I learned to love our
Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

But I had a fear of the Father.

I thought He was
just up there looking down

ready to set me at any moment.

Let me tell you something.

I was reading Hebrews Chapter 1.

And when I came to the
part, Hebrews 1:3, that says,

Jesus, a loving,
gentle, kind Savior,

is the outrank the effluence
