tonight by telling you a story.

He was just 70-years-old.

We went down to
Brazil together in 1993

when he got typhoid
fever in the Amazon jungles

and he twice
landed in the hospital,

almost died both times.

But he finally got
home to Los Angeles

and upon returning home,
he never got back on his feet

because there was a litany
of life-threatening diseases

that just hounded poor Harold,
they hammered him, typhoid,

leaky heart valve, shingles,
Parkinsons, kidney failure,
00:01:07.72\00:01:10.70
cancer, ameloid
deposits of the kidneys.

And finally my friend
Harold died of heart failure.

And I want to tell you

that Harold
Richards was a giant.

He had huge hands,
he had a huge heart,

and he had a huge
passion for Jesus.

In fact, he dreamed one day

of getting back on
his feet and preaching,

but he never did.

But one day a
serendipitous moment occurred

and I'll never forget Jeannie
and I were at his bedside

there in the Glendale
hospital in Southern California

when Harold kind of
motioned for me and he

whispered hoarsely
for me to come closer,

so he could tell me something.

And I leaned in tight

because he
couldn't speak out loud

and he took my
hand and he whispered,

Lon, Lon, you're God's man.

God brought you
to my side to preach.

And his breathing was kind

And I sensed this just might be
Harold's final statement to me.

He's on his way.

or that human beings

and all life on this planet.

Others think, well, you know,

the population explosion
is gonna come to the place

where earth just can't
support so many people,

we will all die
of mass starvation.

Still others worry that
someday maybe an asteroid

or a comet is gonna hit
this earth and destroy it.

But do you know that long ago,

the Bible prophesied
exactly how the world will end.

And friends, the good
news is that the human race

is not going to die out
because of war or starvation

or some plague like SARS,
00:05:09.84\00:05:13.42
or a mysterious
microbe that's released

from some lab in Iraq or
some other enemy country,
00:05:15.65\00:05:19.61
not even by colliding
with an object in outer space.
00:05:19.64\00:05:23.13
Instead our Bible tells us
that the world is gonna end
00:05:23.16\00:05:27.79
with the triumphant return
of Jesus Christ to this earth.

He's gonna
return to the same earth

that He left
almost 2,000 years ago,

and He will return to end time

as we know it and
usher in eternity.

Now it's very
interesting to discover

what people think
when they're asked

what they think the
return of Jesus will be like,

Well, opinions
are very interesting.

But they're just that, opinions.

You know, I'd really
rather prefer to know

And for that, we need to
turn to God's word tonight.

The word that promises that

Jesus is going to
return to our world to deal

problems that we have today.

But the good news is
King Jesus is coming,

and He's coming soon.

And that is a
great comfort to me.

Because the
problems of this world,

why, if you look in
the morning newspapers,

they just keep
getting worse and worse

and it seems that
all of our efforts

to make this world
a safer and better,

healthier place to be
often makes it worse instead.

And in fact,
it's gotten so rotten

but the problems of this
world are beyond human solution.

with all of my heart,

it's going to take
divine intervention

to set everything right again.

were executed as martyrs.

where Paul was imprisoned.

It's carved out of rock

and it's shaped like
a great big test-tube.

And the only way
in or out of that

prison back in Paul's day
was to be let down by a rope.

It's interesting
'cause in the floor

there is an iron grate
with a great pick padlock.

And when that prisoner down
there finally starved or died,

a Roman soldier
would be let down by a rope

and he'd unlock that
grate, and he'd open the door,

he'd kick that
body into the hole

where it tumble
down into a conduit canal

down to the Tiber river

and then it
would wash out to sea.

Well, I'm happy to tell you

that Paul did
not die in that dark,

But while he was
down there waiting

executioner to behead him,

for that blessed hope

You know, if you ever
get down and feeling low

Ladies and gentleman,
the most talked-about event

in the entire New Testament

is the second
coming of Jesus Christ.

In fact, one out of
25 verses in this book.

Christ spent more time
talking about that event

than any other topic in
the entire New Testament.

Beautiful promises
that Jesus made just shortly

before His crucifixion
and then His ascension.

could valiantly face

sword on that fateful day

faith in Christ's promise

detailed accounts of events

that would take just take place

just before He came, His return.

I want you to carefully read
what Jesus Himself tells us.

He says, folks, he says,

there's gonna be a
lot of theories out there

about how and
when He will return.

The event that many
refer to as the rapture.

Even though,
ladies and gentlemen,

that is not a word
you'll find in your King James

There is no such
thing in the scripture

as a secret rapture.

The dictionary by
the way defines rapture

as a state or
experience of being

carried away by
overwhelming emotion.

But that term rapture has come
to be used by many Christians

in the last few years for
a synonym of Jesus' return

the redeemed from this earth.

Jesus taught His disciples

"Take heed that
no one deceives you.

For many will come
in My name, saying,

"Deceive many."

In verse 24, Jesus
elaborates on this issue,

notice "For false Christs,"

we could say, "false preachers,

false prophets,
false evangelists.

"...Will rise
and show great signs

and wonders to deceive,
if possible, even the elect."

Now, folks, if we don't
know how to tell the difference,

how to spot a counterfeit,

what Jesus says is we
just might attach ourselves

to an imposter,
thinking he is Christ.

And Jesus warned
that that could happen.

By the way, He wasn't talking
about a few clumsy deceptions.

incredible impersonations

even about the rapture,

planned and executed

that almost He said,

the whole Christian
world will be deceived.

Our preachers are not
telling you that today.

Jesus said many
of these preachers

will be out there
even working miracles,

healing the sick, giving
supernatural demonstrations

to back up their claims,

preachers will be doing this

in churches with hymn singing.

But Jesus says,
watch, there'll be imposters.

You say, well, how could I?
I haven't been to the seminary.

Friend, that is why these

We want to have you
turn to the Bible and recover

Can you imagine
what that would be like,

a counterfeit
second coming of Jesus?

then someone appears

on the scene
claiming to be Christ.

clothing that they think

Christ would wear
or might have worn.

They speak like they
think He might of spoken,

in a very kind,

And they quote scripture,
they quote a lot of it.

and attract large
followings of people.

to California to sing

claiming to be the Messiah.

People were going

somebody in the crowd said

where are the nail prints

he kind of disappeared
and we never saw him again.

But such persons
might even look like

what you'd expect
Jesus to look like.
