Now, Harry Orchard carried the name 00:00:32.68\00:00:36.24 "Dynamite-killer" for a good reason. 00:00:36.27\00:00:38.95 He had killed 14-- actually killed 21 men, 00:00:38.98\00:00:41.69 14 in one dynamite killing alone 00:00:41.72\00:00:45.06 when he blew up a train loaded with miners 00:00:45.09\00:00:47.59 just getting off the night shift. 00:00:47.62\00:00:49.37 He was we would say who watched paladin 00:00:49.40\00:00:52.32 have gone will travel a hired gun, a "hit man" 00:00:52.35\00:00:56.45 willing to kill anyone, any place, 00:00:56.48\00:00:58.39 any time, just for the right price. 00:00:58.42\00:01:00.36 In fact, Boise's newspaper, "The Idaho Statesman," 00:01:00.39\00:01:03.71 gave this description of Harry and I'm quoting. 00:01:03.74\00:01:06.60 "The face of the man suggests cruelty, cunning, 00:01:06.63\00:01:10.52 and contempt for everything 00:01:10.55\00:01:11.95 that appeals to the ordinary person. 00:01:11.98\00:01:14.00 The eyes being of that shifting character 00:01:14.03\00:01:17.09 that suggests an evil nature. 00:01:17.12\00:01:19.84 He is the devil incarnate." 00:01:19.87\00:01:24.64 Well, Harry Orchard was hired by corrupt labor union 00:01:24.67\00:01:28.48 to determine and he was determined 00:01:28.51\00:01:30.03 to kill anyone who block them from having their own way. 00:01:30.06\00:01:33.55 And his biggest hit ever was the governor 00:01:33.58\00:01:36.43 Frank Steunenberg, who stood in their way 00:01:36.46\00:01:38.83 when he was governor of the State of Idaho. 00:01:38.86\00:01:41.69 And it happened one night in December, 00:01:41.72\00:01:43.89 Harry Orchard happened to be 00:01:43.92\00:01:45.64 playing cards at the Saratoga Hotel 00:01:45.67\00:01:48.36 when he saw his chance 00:01:48.39\00:01:49.66 because right there in the lobby, 00:01:49.69\00:01:52.14 he spotted Governor Steunenberg visiting with some friends 00:01:52.17\00:01:54.78 preparing to leave for home. 00:01:54.81\00:01:56.87 Well, Orchard hurried upstairs to his room, 00:01:56.90\00:01:59.09 he picked up the dynamite bomb, he wrapped it in newspaper, 00:01:59.12\00:02:02.32 tucked it under his arm and he dashed out to his car. 00:02:02.35\00:02:06.10 At the Steunenberg home, 00:02:06.13\00:02:07.60 he quickly wired that bomb to the gate 00:02:07.63\00:02:10.56 and then he sneaked away in the gathering dark. 00:02:10.59\00:02:13.66 Movements later, as the governor arrived home 00:02:13.69\00:02:16.40 there was a terrific explosion. 00:02:16.43\00:02:19.46 And as Frank Steunenberg blood poured out of the snow 00:02:19.49\00:02:23.34 his wife and children stunned rushed out 00:02:23.37\00:02:25.83 to find their husband and father dying. 00:02:25.86\00:02:29.58 Minutes later the fatal surprise 00:02:29.61\00:02:31.87 rocked Caldwell, Idaho. 00:02:31.90\00:02:33.43 Frank Steunenberg, known to all 00:02:33.46\00:02:35.90 and loved by most, was assassinated. 00:02:35.93\00:02:41.21 Well, Harry Orchard was caught and he admitted the crime 00:02:41.24\00:02:44.04 and he was tried and he was convicted 00:02:44.07\00:02:46.05 and sentenced to die for his heinous deed. 00:02:46.08\00:02:49.92 Now Mrs. Steunenberg had every reason to hate this man 00:02:49.95\00:02:54.25 that had destroyed her husband so cruelly 00:02:54.28\00:02:56.27 but she happened to be a Christian. 00:02:56.30\00:02:59.44 And she sent Harry Orchard a message in prison 00:02:59.47\00:03:02.65 expressing forgiveness with a little book 00:03:02.68\00:03:07.58 wrapped up called Steps to Christ. 00:03:07.61\00:03:14.79 And the guard went down the cell block 00:03:14.82\00:03:18.39 and he said to Harry, 00:03:18.42\00:03:20.17 "Here's a package from the wife of the man that you murdered." 00:03:20.20\00:03:24.22 Well, frightened, thinking that little package 00:03:24.25\00:03:26.10 might be a bomb to get revenge, 00:03:26.13\00:03:27.61 he was so terrified he didn't want to open it. 00:03:27.64\00:03:30.42 But when he finally did and saw the title, "Steps to Christ," 00:03:30.45\00:03:35.62 and he just threw it down on the cell with a curse 00:03:35.65\00:03:37.82 because he hadn't heard that name used except 00:03:37.85\00:03:40.72 years and years ago in swearing. 00:03:40.75\00:03:44.38 Well, ladies and gentlemen, to make a long story short, 00:03:44.41\00:03:46.37 this is a true story. 00:03:46.40\00:03:48.79 The very thought of Mrs. Steunenberg's kindness 00:03:48.82\00:03:52.80 and forgiveness to him was just too much 00:03:52.83\00:03:55.49 for even this hardened murderer. 00:03:55.52\00:03:58.36 Eventually, he took up that little book 00:03:58.39\00:04:00.91 and he began to read. 00:04:00.94\00:04:03.06 And it was a message of God's love 00:04:03.09\00:04:04.69 and forgiveness and his hardened heart 00:04:04.72\00:04:06.86 was strangely warmed as he read that book. 00:04:06.89\00:04:10.17 Then he began to read the Bible and as Orchards read, 00:04:10.20\00:04:13.76 he thought about the spirit of forgiveness 00:04:13.79\00:04:15.80 of that widow of that victim had shown to him 00:04:15.83\00:04:18.87 and his heart was strangely softened 00:04:18.90\00:04:21.04 and he didn't know what was going on inside. 00:04:21.07\00:04:23.92 He discovered in a book that he had ridiculed for years 00:04:23.95\00:04:27.53 the Bible that there was good news. 00:04:27.56\00:04:32.15 He found as he read the Bible that there was hope 00:04:32.18\00:04:34.22 and there was forgiveness for even him, 00:04:34.25\00:04:36.59 and for every other sinner on earth. 00:04:36.62\00:04:39.31 Romans 6:23 particularly caught his attention. 00:04:39.34\00:04:44.49 "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God 00:04:44.52\00:04:50.43 is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord." 00:04:50.46\00:04:53.74 Now he knew that he deserve death. 00:04:53.77\00:04:57.19 But now he learned that God wanted to give him eternal life 00:04:57.22\00:05:01.07 in spite of the sins that he had done. 00:05:01.10\00:05:04.52 Harry on death row, made an amazing discover 00:05:04.55\00:05:08.76 that every single person in the world 00:05:08.79\00:05:11.47 is also on death row. 00:05:11.50\00:05:13.70 But the Bible says in Romans 3:23. 00:05:13.73\00:05:16.98 "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." 00:05:17.01\00:05:21.49 And then he found over Roman 3:10-12. 00:05:21.52\00:05:25.07 "There is none righteous, no, not one. 00:05:25.10\00:05:28.42 There is none who understands, 00:05:28.45\00:05:30.14 There is none who seeks after God, 00:05:30.17\00:05:31.97 There is none who does good, no, not one." 00:05:32.00\00:05:36.79 Well, that's sounds like bad news 00:05:36.82\00:05:38.69 it get even worse as you turn over to Roman 6:23. 00:05:38.72\00:05:42.72 "For the wages of sin" Harry "is death." 00:05:42.75\00:05:48.55 Well, Harry knew well enough 00:05:48.58\00:05:49.76 why he had to die for his crime. 00:05:49.79\00:05:51.52 Made perfect sense. 00:05:51.55\00:05:53.25 But it was so frightening to face eternity 00:05:53.28\00:05:56.08 with this judgment of condemnation 00:05:56.11\00:05:58.63 hanging over him because of his sins. 00:05:58.66\00:06:00.83 I mean that was enough to make a person really despair. 00:06:00.86\00:06:04.71 And then he kept on reading 00:06:04.74\00:06:06.40 the rest of the passage in Roman 6:23. 00:06:06.43\00:06:09.19 The wages of sin Harry, is death 00:06:09.22\00:06:10.92 "but the gift of God is eternal life 00:06:10.95\00:06:15.48 in Christ Jesus our Lord." 00:06:15.51\00:06:18.48 Could it be true? For me? 00:06:18.51\00:06:22.31 Well, the further that he searched the Bible 00:06:22.34\00:06:24.15 the better it got 00:06:24.18\00:06:25.21 and a little glimmer of hope began to break through. 00:06:25.24\00:06:28.90 He read Ephesians 2:8-9. 00:06:28.93\00:06:31.63 Harry, "For by grace you have been saved 00:06:31.66\00:06:35.19 through faith, that not of yourselves 00:06:35.22\00:06:38.29 it is the gift of God, not of works, 00:06:38.32\00:06:40.90 lest anyone should boast." 00:06:40.93\00:06:42.76 Well, the bad news was beginning 00:06:42.79\00:06:45.07 to turn into the good news. 00:06:45.10\00:06:47.17 Oh, but don't think when a person 00:06:47.20\00:06:48.85 begins to turn to Christ it gets easy. 00:06:48.88\00:06:51.50 Harry Orchard was tortured with thoughts 00:06:51.53\00:06:55.27 that he because of his sin had just gone too far. 00:06:55.30\00:06:59.37 "Surely, I'm beyond God's forgiveness. 00:06:59.40\00:07:01.86 There's no hope for me. 00:07:01.89\00:07:03.15 God couldn't possibly forgive a murderer." 00:07:03.18\00:07:06.02 So he was afraid fearing there was no hope for him 00:07:06.05\00:07:09.73 almost ready to give up any thought of forgiveness. 00:07:09.76\00:07:13.60 Yet something kept him hanging on 00:07:13.63\00:07:15.93 reading about God's great love for His wayward children. 00:07:15.96\00:07:19.14 "Could it be true? 00:07:19.17\00:07:20.72 Jesus took the penalty for my sin, too? 00:07:20.75\00:07:24.36 And for everyone who ever lived or ever would live? 00:07:24.39\00:07:29.22 Imagine what Harry thought when one day 00:07:29.25\00:07:32.59 that governors wife Mrs. Steunenburg herself 00:07:32.62\00:07:36.26 came and paid him a visit in the prison. 00:07:36.29\00:07:39.42 And she came down to the cell 00:07:39.45\00:07:41.04 and she sat there and she personally told him, 00:07:41.07\00:07:43.78 "Harry, I forgive you because I am a Christian. 00:07:43.81\00:07:50.70 But Harry, I want to invite Jesus to come into your heart." 00:07:50.73\00:07:57.60 Incredible, forgiving love from a heart-broken widow 00:07:57.63\00:08:01.66 to this cold-blooded murderer of her husband 00:08:01.69\00:08:04.05 and father of their children. 00:08:04.08\00:08:06.93 Harry Orchard came to the conclusion 00:08:06.96\00:08:08.78 that all he could do was cast himself 00:08:08.81\00:08:11.08 of the feet of Jesus and ask for mercy 00:08:11.11\00:08:13.43 and forgiveness and for eternal life. 00:08:13.46\00:08:15.96 And by faith Harry Orchard 00:08:15.99\00:08:17.88 accepted Jesus Christ as his savior. 00:08:17.91\00:08:22.18 I wanted to tell you, Harry Orchard's conversion 00:08:22.21\00:08:24.99 was so genuine, so deep, so revolutionary 00:08:25.02\00:08:29.02 he was baptized into Jesus Christ 00:08:29.05\00:08:31.49 and he joined at least from prison 00:08:31.52\00:08:34.34 Mrs. Steunenberg church family. 00:08:34.37\00:08:37.75 And because he turned states evidence, 00:08:37.78\00:08:40.70 states witness. 00:08:40.73\00:08:42.46 His sentence was changed from death to life in prison. 00:08:42.49\00:08:47.95 Now I want you to fast forward with me 50 years 00:08:47.98\00:08:50.89 till just not many months ago when he died, 00:08:50.92\00:08:54.42 I read it in the paper. 00:08:54.45\00:08:56.25 All of those years, he was a model prisoner. 00:08:56.28\00:08:59.84 In fact, he became such a positive witness 00:08:59.87\00:09:02.24 for his faith that he led several prisoners 00:09:02.27\00:09:04.56 to accept Jesus as their savior too. 00:09:04.59\00:09:07.02 Many a man waiting on death's row 00:09:07.05\00:09:09.25 actually would refuse to see a chaplain 00:09:09.28\00:09:11.15 but they ask for Harry Orchard to come and pray for them. 00:09:11.18\00:09:14.85 After more than 50 years in prison, he said this 00:09:14.88\00:09:17.61 and this is the quotation that was is the papers. 00:09:17.64\00:09:20.37 "Iron bars and prison walls have kept my body captive, 00:09:20.40\00:09:25.84 but my soul has long been set free." 00:09:25.87\00:09:29.34 Amen. 00:09:29.37\00:09:30.42 It's quite a story. Amen. 00:09:30.45\00:09:32.28 But you know ladies and gentlemen, 00:09:32.31\00:09:34.13 there is no doubt about it, he was right. 00:09:34.16\00:09:37.01 We have all sinned, 00:09:37.04\00:09:39.70 we're all damaged goods if you wish. 00:09:39.73\00:09:43.81 Well, someone says, hey wait a minute Lonnie, 00:09:43.84\00:09:46.18 you know I'm pretty good. 00:09:46.21\00:09:48.19 Really I mean when you compare Harry Orchard to me, 00:09:48.22\00:09:51.41 I would hardly ever sin at all. 00:09:51.44\00:09:53.77 I mean, I might do little gooses. 00:09:53.80\00:09:55.82 No biggies. 00:09:55.85\00:09:57.31 But I want to do the math with me little bit here. 00:09:57.34\00:09:59.18 Would you? Let's say I am pretty good? 00:09:59.21\00:10:02.13 Let's say I only sin 10 sins a day. 00:10:02.16\00:10:06.32 Oh, let's say I'm really good, I down to five. 00:10:06.35\00:10:10.24 But let's see we make it three. 00:10:10.27\00:10:12.32 Three sins a day. 00:10:12.35\00:10:13.69 Well, if you multiply that times 00:10:13.72\00:10:14.80 about 365 days a year that's 1,095. 00:10:14.83\00:10:18.72 Well, say as sin-- 1,000 a year. 00:10:18.75\00:10:22.83 Well, if you multiplied that by your age, 00:10:22.86\00:10:25.11 if you lived to be 70 years old, 1000 times 00:10:25.14\00:10:28.30 70 that's 70,000 sins in my lifetime, big time. 00:10:28.33\00:10:33.51 Say you've got a major sin problem 00:10:33.54\00:10:35.41 big as the New York City telephone directory. 00:10:35.44\00:10:38.14 So we need help, don't we? Big time. 00:10:38.17\00:10:40.92 You know, when I first saw this I really got depressed 00:10:40.95\00:10:44.38 but then I learned how to have peace of mind 00:10:44.41\00:10:46.44 and you can have it too. 00:10:46.47\00:10:47.77 Just four simple steps. 00:10:47.80\00:10:52.21 First, to discover the steps to eternal life 00:10:52.24\00:10:54.62 as Harry Orchard did. 00:10:54.65\00:10:56.03 You got to recognize that God loves you. 00:10:56.06\00:10:59.64 He loves me. 00:10:59.67\00:11:01.10 He wants to give me eternal life. 00:11:01.13\00:11:04.17 That's the first step. 00:11:04.20\00:11:06.21 But the second step is I also must recognize I'm sinful 00:11:06.24\00:11:11.01 and the wages of my sin is death. 00:11:11.04\00:11:15.15 You see, if a person has terminal illness 00:11:15.18\00:11:18.32 and he never admits or she never admits 00:11:18.35\00:11:20.19 their problem or seeks medical advice they will die. 00:11:20.22\00:11:24.32 And that is precisely the fate of the sinner 00:11:24.35\00:11:26.69 who doesn't recognize his spiritual condition 00:11:26.72\00:11:29.06 and fails to seek help. 00:11:29.09\00:11:31.06 Why? 00:11:31.09\00:11:32.14 Oh, friend, because sin 00:11:32.17\00:11:33.60 is the most serious thing in the universe. 00:11:33.63\00:11:36.63 So I have to realize I have a problem like Harry Orchard. 00:11:36.66\00:11:41.72 The Bible says in Isaiah 59:2. 00:11:41.75\00:11:44.61 "But your iniquities, your sins" Lonnie 00:11:44.64\00:11:47.84 "have separated you from your God." 00:11:47.87\00:11:51.48 You see God is life and for me to be separated from God 00:11:51.51\00:11:56.10 is to separate from life so I die eternally. 00:11:56.13\00:12:00.19 When Adam and Eve sinned 00:12:00.22\00:12:01.58 they separated themselves from God 00:12:01.61\00:12:03.39 and soon as they did they begin to die. 00:12:03.42\00:12:07.51 That's what sin does. 00:12:07.54\00:12:09.46 But not just Adam and Eve, 00:12:09.49\00:12:11.55 we all are under that sentence of death 00:12:11.58\00:12:14.31 because we all live on the same ball of mud. 00:12:14.34\00:12:17.36 But God doesn't just tell me Lon, 00:12:17.39\00:12:19.17 you're gonna die without giving you some hope, 00:12:19.20\00:12:21.11 aren't you glad for that? 00:12:21.14\00:12:22.57 There is good news. 00:12:22.60\00:12:23.89 Harry Orchard discovered the third step 00:12:23.92\00:12:27.80 and it is founded in Romans 6:23 00:12:27.83\00:12:30.59 and it's a text we've already read 00:12:30.62\00:12:32.15 and you know it tonight. 00:12:32.18\00:12:33.28 "The wages of sin is death" Lonnie 00:12:33.31\00:12:36.32 "but the gift of God is eternal life 00:12:36.35\00:12:42.55 through Jesus Christ our Lord." 00:12:42.58\00:12:45.59 Salvation is a gift we don't deserve, 00:12:45.62\00:12:48.67 you can't earn it, and you can't buy it. 00:12:48.70\00:12:52.28 Because you can't put God under obligation to you 00:12:52.31\00:12:55.66 by your own good works. 00:12:55.69\00:12:57.83 By the way, every single religion 00:12:57.86\00:12:59.48 outside of true Christianity does teach 00:12:59.51\00:13:01.88 that you do receive forgiveness 00:13:01.91\00:13:03.53 and eternal life by doing God deeds. 00:13:03.56\00:13:07.95 One of our staff members took these pictures in India. 00:13:07.98\00:13:11.32 Long-bearded men clad in scanty loincloths 00:13:11.35\00:13:14.67 sit on beds of spikes, believing that 00:13:14.70\00:13:16.63 by torturing their bodies they can earn God's favor 00:13:16.66\00:13:19.90 and flagellants beat their backs 00:13:19.93\00:13:22.27 and bruise their bodies with whips and chains. 00:13:22.30\00:13:25.22 Some people walk bare-footed on hot white coals, 00:13:25.25\00:13:28.56 like the fire-walkers that I have seen in Fiji. 00:13:28.59\00:13:31.84 While others place skewers like bicycle spokes 00:13:31.87\00:13:34.88 with sharp points in their skin through their cheeks 00:13:34.91\00:13:37.50 and through there bodies here all seeking favor of their Gods 00:13:37.53\00:13:40.61 by unusual acts of physical abuse. 00:13:40.64\00:13:43.32 In fact our friends the Buddhists 00:13:43.35\00:13:45.34 believe that they can gain merit 00:13:45.37\00:13:47.52 for a future life by building pagodas 00:13:47.55\00:13:49.64 or feeding the holy men, or you see them 00:13:49.67\00:13:51.60 put little food outside their front door steps. 00:13:51.63\00:13:54.46 For our Moslems friends there is no greater joy 00:13:54.49\00:13:57.53 or better way of earning favor with God 00:13:57.56\00:13:59.33 then pilgrimage to Mecca 00:13:59.36\00:14:01.83 or as we all know dying in defense of Islam. 00:14:01.86\00:14:09.46 But before you jump to conclusions 00:14:09.49\00:14:10.98 and judge them as well there is somewhat 00:14:11.01\00:14:13.92 unfortunately maybe not as wise as we are 00:14:13.95\00:14:17.47 unfortunately many Christians unwittingly do the same thing. 00:14:17.50\00:14:22.06 They think by doing things, by attending church, 00:14:22.09\00:14:24.38 by giving offerings by going out 00:14:24.41\00:14:26.00 and helping the community chest. 00:14:26.03\00:14:27.49 By following the golden rule they think that they will earn 00:14:27.52\00:14:30.33 favor with God and thus in the end 00:14:30.36\00:14:32.22 they will deserve eternal life. 00:14:32.25\00:14:33.98 But my question tonight is, is that possible? 00:14:34.01\00:14:37.78 Can we through good works bribe God 00:14:37.81\00:14:41.56 to grant forgiveness and eternal life? 00:14:41.59\00:14:44.11 Do we earn salvation or do we win it kind of like 00:14:44.14\00:14:46.85 one does an Olympic medal in the Olympics? 00:14:46.88\00:14:51.18 Is heaven have rewarded for being good 00:14:51.21\00:14:55.32 or maybe even self discipline? 00:14:55.35\00:14:57.73 No, thank you. 00:14:57.76\00:14:58.95 Ephesians 2:8-9 says, 00:14:58.98\00:15:01.04 "For by grace are you saved through faith 00:15:01.07\00:15:05.27 and that not of yourselves it is the gift of God, 00:15:05.30\00:15:09.09 not of works, lest any man should boast." 00:15:09.12\00:15:13.57 It's a gift. 00:15:13.60\00:15:15.40 You see if I could earn salvation, 00:15:15.43\00:15:18.00 it wouldn't be a gift. 00:15:18.03\00:15:20.85 Suppose your employer handed you an envelope and he said, 00:15:20.88\00:15:25.04 I have a gift for you and you discovered 00:15:25.07\00:15:28.61 your pay check in there for the past two weeks. 00:15:28.64\00:15:32.29 Would that be a gift? Not if you had earned it. 00:15:32.32\00:15:36.61 But now perhaps someone asking why would the mighty God 00:15:36.64\00:15:40.47 who rules the universe why would he be concerned 00:15:40.50\00:15:42.92 about people out here on a sin sick planet 00:15:42.95\00:15:45.37 far out on the edge of space? 00:15:45.40\00:15:46.64 Why didn't He just abounded rebellious sinners 00:15:46.67\00:15:48.99 and leave us to suffer the consciousness of our sins? 00:15:49.02\00:15:53.45 Well, the answer is found throughout the Bible 00:15:53.48\00:15:55.11 in just three words but I love it in 1 John 4:16. 00:15:55.14\00:15:59.05 "God is love." Amen. 00:15:59.08\00:16:02.97 He loves us terminally ill patients 00:16:03.00\00:16:06.38 with the disease of sin. 00:16:06.41\00:16:08.46 Can I share little personal human illustration? 00:16:08.49\00:16:11.89 One of my own loved ones and his young wife 00:16:11.92\00:16:15.56 they excitedly brought their 00:16:15.59\00:16:16.76 little baby home from the hospital. 00:16:16.79\00:16:18.66 Within days they discovered 00:16:18.69\00:16:19.75 that baby began to cry day and night 00:16:19.78\00:16:21.81 with sever case of something that was not diagnosed. 00:16:21.84\00:16:25.17 Well, it was colic or what 00:16:25.20\00:16:26.63 but the parents followed the physician advice, 00:16:26.66\00:16:29.48 but nothing seemed to help. 00:16:29.51\00:16:31.28 They walk the floor, they sang to that little child. 00:16:31.31\00:16:33.78 They tried all sources of advice from friends 00:16:33.81\00:16:36.32 but nothing worked. 00:16:36.35\00:16:37.57 Well, I'm happy to tell you that 00:16:37.60\00:16:38.71 kid is now 22 years of age. 00:16:38.74\00:16:41.60 But all of his life and he's still 00:16:41.63\00:16:43.12 continues to have many strange medical problem. 00:16:43.15\00:16:47.29 And they are exhausted, they are drained financially 00:16:47.32\00:16:50.98 but not once did those parents ever considered 00:16:51.01\00:16:53.77 well just giving the child away 00:16:53.80\00:16:56.11 or abounding him, let him suffer alone. 00:16:56.14\00:16:58.32 No. Why? 00:16:58.35\00:17:01.38 They love that helpless little child 00:17:01.41\00:17:03.78 all the more because of the pain and the suffering 00:17:03.81\00:17:06.35 that he has to endure. 00:17:06.38\00:17:08.16 And you know that's what God like. 00:17:08.19\00:17:10.45 We His children on this planet earth 00:17:10.48\00:17:13.08 have developed the colic of sin and the pain and the suffering 00:17:13.11\00:17:17.34 we endure because of it well, that only intensifies 00:17:17.37\00:17:20.48 Gods loves for us and he never gives up. 00:17:20.51\00:17:24.62 Never has God considered abounding us. 00:17:24.65\00:17:26.73 No, never is He considered leaving us to just perish 00:17:26.76\00:17:30.17 and suffer the consequences of our rebellion. 00:17:30.20\00:17:32.75 Now the Bible says in 2 Peter 3:9. 00:17:32.78\00:17:36.81 "The Lord is longsuffering toward us, 00:17:36.84\00:17:39.33 not willing that any should perish 00:17:39.36\00:17:41.50 but that all should come to repentance." 00:17:41.53\00:17:45.17 Regardless of how good or bad God loves you. 00:17:45.20\00:17:48.88 He wants to save you, friend. 00:17:48.91\00:17:50.41 He is not willing that you should perish. 00:17:50.44\00:17:53.14 Romans 5:8. 00:17:53.17\00:17:56.29 "But God commendeth His love toward us, that, 00:17:56.32\00:17:59.53 while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." 00:17:59.56\00:18:05.89 Now I have a little theological question for you, 00:18:05.92\00:18:08.29 want you to think a little bit tonight. 00:18:08.32\00:18:10.79 How can it be, how can it be that God 00:18:10.82\00:18:14.86 who is sinned against can punish sin 00:18:14.89\00:18:20.67 and yet forgive us 00:18:20.70\00:18:22.80 not counting our sins against us 00:18:22.83\00:18:26.09 because admittedly, we have all sinned. 00:18:26.12\00:18:27.51 We've all rebelled against God, broken His law. 00:18:27.54\00:18:31.73 Earthly governments cannot long tolerate 00:18:31.76\00:18:34.87 lawlessness and survive. 00:18:34.90\00:18:36.35 Can they? 00:18:36.38\00:18:37.45 Violators when they found guilty or always punished. 00:18:37.48\00:18:41.38 But you see violating Gods love is far most serious thing 00:18:41.41\00:18:44.50 because sin separates us from God. 00:18:44.53\00:18:47.63 The one who created us 00:18:47.66\00:18:48.71 and the only one who can help us 00:18:48.74\00:18:50.15 and the only one who can save us. 00:18:50.18\00:18:52.77 So you see there is a problem here, 00:18:52.80\00:18:54.40 there is a tension here. 00:18:54.43\00:18:56.66 Even though God is a God of everlasting love 00:18:56.69\00:19:00.50 He is also a God of perfect justice. 00:19:00.53\00:19:04.18 A God of love. 00:19:04.21\00:19:05.72 In fact, He describes himself 00:19:05.75\00:19:06.86 to Moses on Mount Sinai in Exodus 34:6, 7. 00:19:06.89\00:19:11.12 "The Lord God, 00:19:11.15\00:19:12.39 compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, 00:19:12.42\00:19:15.66 abounding in love and faithfulness, 00:19:15.69\00:19:18.13 maintaining love for thousands, 00:19:18.16\00:19:20.56 and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. 00:19:20.59\00:19:23.49 Yet He does not leave the guilty unpunished." 00:19:23.52\00:19:30.21 So even God had dilemma. 00:19:30.24\00:19:33.22 He is loving and merciful but at the same time 00:19:33.25\00:19:37.33 He is also a God of perfect law and perfect justice. 00:19:37.36\00:19:41.37 He would by no means clears the guilty, 00:19:41.40\00:19:44.11 says by King James Version. 00:19:44.14\00:19:45.75 So nobody gets off the hook. The wages of sin is death. 00:19:45.78\00:19:50.09 So here is the $64,000 question tonight. 00:19:50.12\00:19:53.85 How can these two seeming opposites be reconciled? 00:19:53.88\00:19:57.38 God loves us, wants to give everyone eternal life. 00:19:57.41\00:20:00.51 But His justice and His law demand 00:20:00.54\00:20:02.71 that He punish law-breakers. 00:20:02.74\00:20:04.02 "The wages of sin is death." Is there no solution? 00:20:04.05\00:20:10.00 No way out? Thank God, there is a way out. 00:20:10.03\00:20:14.52 A loving God found a way to save us and still be just 00:20:14.55\00:20:20.89 He found a perfect substitute to die in our place, 00:20:20.92\00:20:26.10 pay the penalty for our sins 00:20:26.13\00:20:28.18 and then crediting it to us so that we could live. 00:20:28.21\00:20:32.87 John, the beloved disciple 00:20:32.90\00:20:34.28 explains it this way in John 3:16 00:20:34.31\00:20:36.39 and many of you know this passage 00:20:36.42\00:20:37.53 is the most famous in all the Bible. 00:20:37.56\00:20:39.62 Say it out loud, wherever you are in the seminar location 00:20:39.65\00:20:41.91 or satellite locations and here in Columbia. 00:20:41.94\00:20:44.50 "God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, 00:20:44.53\00:20:49.79 that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, 00:20:49.82\00:20:54.01 but have everlasting life." 00:20:54.04\00:20:56.93 Jesus came down here to our sewer cesspool world 00:20:56.96\00:21:02.76 to live as a man, face the same problems 00:21:02.79\00:21:05.59 and temptations that ever human being faced, 00:21:05.62\00:21:08.93 but He proved by His perfect life of obedience 00:21:08.96\00:21:11.39 that there is no excuse for sin. 00:21:11.42\00:21:13.55 But then, as the one sinless representative 00:21:13.58\00:21:16.93 of the human race, Christ voluntarily 00:21:16.96\00:21:20.05 took upon Himself the guilt of every person 00:21:20.08\00:21:23.03 who would ever live, and died on their behalf. 00:21:23.06\00:21:25.65 He paid the penalty for our sin, your sin, my sin. 00:21:25.68\00:21:30.30 Paul wrote in Romans 5:19. 00:21:30.33\00:21:34.38 For as by one man," this is talk about Adam now, 00:21:34.41\00:21:38.89 "For as by one man's disobedience 00:21:38.92\00:21:41.74 many were made sinners, 00:21:41.77\00:21:44.37 so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous." 00:21:44.40\00:21:50.81 See Jesus is death was not to appease an angry God, 00:21:50.84\00:21:54.29 as Mater Luther first thought. 00:21:54.32\00:21:57.04 Jesus willingly offered to die to save us from our sins. 00:21:57.07\00:22:02.36 And God loved us so much 00:22:02.39\00:22:03.97 He was willing to allow His only Son 00:22:04.00\00:22:05.83 to be sacrificed in our place as a ransom 00:22:05.86\00:22:10.00 and that's how much salvation cost heaven. 00:22:10.03\00:22:12.45 Jesus the sacrificial Lamb of God. 00:22:12.48\00:22:17.78 Go back with me, 00:22:17.81\00:22:18.95 several thousand years back into the Old Testament 00:22:18.98\00:22:21.12 when God was leading His people, 00:22:21.15\00:22:23.12 Israel, out of Egypt. 00:22:23.15\00:22:25.61 He gave them a most dramatic 00:22:25.64\00:22:27.49 kindergarten illustration of the plan of salvation. 00:22:27.52\00:22:31.52 That sin means death. 00:22:31.55\00:22:35.84 Fifteen centuries before Jesus came to die, 00:22:35.87\00:22:39.19 God calls man's attention to faith in a future Calvary, 00:22:39.22\00:22:44.07 were the true Lamb would be sacrifice 00:22:44.10\00:22:46.81 for the sins of mankind, everybody. 00:22:46.84\00:22:49.57 So here came this sinner, can you see him there? 00:22:49.60\00:22:52.24 He is bringing along with little sacrificial animal 00:22:52.27\00:22:54.26 perhaps a lamb. 00:22:54.29\00:22:56.77 And he is going to participate in that dramatic 00:22:56.80\00:22:58.60 and very shocking visualization of Calvary. 00:22:58.63\00:23:02.21 He places his hands there over that little lamb, 00:23:02.24\00:23:05.77 that animal, confesses his sin. 00:23:05.80\00:23:08.69 But then he has to take out a knife 00:23:08.72\00:23:11.55 and himself kill that lamb, symbolizing that his sins 00:23:11.58\00:23:16.14 would one day because the death of Jesus 00:23:16.17\00:23:18.65 who would come to die as these sacrificial lamb. 00:23:18.68\00:23:21.68 And it was a revolting ceremony in vivid 3-D Technicolor 00:23:21.71\00:23:25.27 burning into their minds 00:23:25.30\00:23:26.83 the wages of sin is very serious. 00:23:26.86\00:23:31.03 Gruesome? 00:23:31.06\00:23:33.29 Do you think about gruesome? Yes. 00:23:33.32\00:23:35.44 Absolutely. Yes. 00:23:35.47\00:23:37.26 I mean, imagine there 00:23:37.29\00:23:38.37 standing on that little altar hanging onto that lamb 00:23:38.40\00:23:42.34 and he is jumping around on top of the altar. 00:23:42.37\00:23:44.10 It's trying to get away 00:23:44.13\00:23:45.16 and it's finally bleeding to death. 00:23:45.19\00:23:47.31 Horrible shocking to the end degree 00:23:47.34\00:23:49.35 and the sinner would fall down on his knees 00:23:49.38\00:23:51.19 and he says, my God, my God, what I have done? 00:23:51.22\00:23:55.36 This is what my sins on Calvary cross 00:23:55.39\00:23:58.18 will do to Jesus the Lamb of God someday. 00:23:58.21\00:24:01.83 You see their sacrifices, show death their faith 00:24:01.86\00:24:05.37 in the coming death of Jesus the true Lamb of God 00:24:05.40\00:24:09.35 who die in our place as our substitute. 00:24:09.38\00:24:12.12 Aren't you glad we don't have to sacrifice 00:24:12.15\00:24:14.07 a lamb every time within now? 00:24:14.10\00:24:15.94 Amen. Praise the Lord. 00:24:15.97\00:24:17.07 John 1:29 says, "Behold the Lamb of God 00:24:17.10\00:24:20.83 who takes away the sin of the world!" 00:24:20.86\00:24:23.90 And how ironic that the very men 00:24:23.93\00:24:26.01 Jesus came to save plotted to take His life. 00:24:26.04\00:24:29.94 Jesus, totally innocent, was beaten, mocked, 00:24:29.97\00:24:34.63 crucified the cruelest form of execution ever devised, 00:24:34.66\00:24:38.10 that was reserved for the worst of criminals. 00:24:38.13\00:24:40.97 He was the one 1 Peter 2:22 says, "Who did no sin, 00:24:41.00\00:24:45.17 neither was guile found in his mouth." 00:24:45.20\00:24:49.36 But he died on an instrument of torture, 00:24:49.39\00:24:54.00 dying our death taking on Himself my sins 00:24:54.03\00:24:59.76 and so identifying with sinners. 00:24:59.79\00:25:01.90 In fact, as we said the other night 00:25:01.93\00:25:03.30 He was crucified between two thieves. 00:25:03.33\00:25:07.20 And God placed on Him the sins of the whole world 00:25:07.23\00:25:11.89 and that's why He cried out in Mathew 27:46. 00:25:11.92\00:25:14.66 "My God, My God, why have You forsaken me?" 00:25:14.69\00:25:18.80 He felt the terrible knife, 00:25:18.83\00:25:21.84 sin brings separation from God and Jesus couldn't bare 00:25:21.87\00:25:27.07 the agony of separation from His own Father. 00:25:27.10\00:25:29.53 You see friends, it wasn't the nails that killed Him. 00:25:29.56\00:25:34.25 He died from our sins of a broken heart. 00:25:34.28\00:25:39.88 And the crowd shouted out there, 00:25:39.91\00:25:41.84 well, "He saved others, Himself he cannot save." 00:25:41.87\00:25:45.83 How true that was, because He couldn't save Himself 00:25:45.86\00:25:48.41 and save us too and save other people. 00:25:48.44\00:25:52.00 But you see, Gods love couldn't be 00:25:52.03\00:25:54.89 completely satisfied until He restored us, 00:25:54.92\00:25:58.46 restored mankind back to Gods family. 00:25:58.49\00:26:01.37 God loves us so much that He gave His own Son 00:26:01.40\00:26:04.51 to die in our place, as our substitute. 00:26:04.54\00:26:08.48 And by paying the price himself, 00:26:08.51\00:26:11.62 God has the right now 00:26:11.65\00:26:13.78 to give us credit for what Christ did. 00:26:13.81\00:26:17.46 He has charged our sins to Jesus account 00:26:17.49\00:26:20.90 make Him die to pay our debt 00:26:20.93\00:26:23.80 and then God turns around and credits us 00:26:23.83\00:26:26.52 with the perfect life Jesus lived. 00:26:26.55\00:26:29.65 Amazing grace we say, how sweet to sound, isn't it? 00:26:29.68\00:26:34.82 Paul the apostle said it, we said it tonight already. 00:26:34.85\00:26:36.97 "For it is by grace you have been saved, 00:26:37.00\00:26:40.61 through faith." 00:26:40.64\00:26:42.91 Now how does this faith in Jesus work? 00:26:42.94\00:26:47.60 Well, that's the question 00:26:47.63\00:26:48.66 that the Philippians jailer wanted to know. 00:26:48.69\00:26:51.64 What must I do?
