00:10 Hi, I'm Tammy Chance and this is my husband, Bruce.
00:13 Hi, and welcome to, "What's In Your Hand?" 00:15 For the first time viewers who have never 00:18 plugged into our program before, 00:20 we would like to give you a little background 00:22 of just how the program got up and going. 00:24 Well, really it's a great story! 00:27 My brother, Danny was doing a Today program. 00:29 He was talking about letters and e- mails that he had received 00:34 from people that wanted to help support 3ABN 00:37 but didn't have the finances to do so. 00:39 He said, "Look around and see what you have in your hand. 00:43 Remember the story in Exodus of Moses 00:45 when he had the rod in his hand 00:47 and God turned it into a snake. 00:49 He said, "What do you have in your hand?" 00:51 It was unbelievable, the response was overwhelming. 00:55 Stuff started to come in. Items started to come in. 00:59 We are talking collectible items, coins, antiques, 01:03 and china. So many things came in and we weren't prepared. 01:07 There wasn't really a department and that's where 01:10 Bruce and I came in. 01:12 We decided to start a department to take care of 01:15 all the items that came in, 01:17 to find out what we could do with them. 01:19 What kind of ways we could sell them and bring cash in to 3ABN. 01:24 Maybe you could explain a little bit more 01:26 about what we do in our department. 01:29 Sure. This whole program is about bringing these items 01:33 into God's storehouse and turning them into money 01:36 to carry on the good works of 3ABN. 01:38 We get a wide variety of items as one could expect. 01:43 We research these items as they come in. 01:46 We do extensive research on items we aren't familiar with. 01:53 Of course a lot of the items we are familiar with. 01:56 We turn those back into cash and put them back 01:59 into the good works of 3ABN. 02:01 Also, when those items sell then we can give a receipt 02:05 to the donator. Is that right? 02:07 That's absolutely correct! 02:08 That's a tax deductible receipt. 02:10 It's a tax deductible receipt. 02:11 We have been over some of the information before 02:14 that we are going to talk about right now. 02:17 I always like to put you on the spot 02:19 because you're the one that handles most of this. 02:22 When we talk about items like jewelry and they come in 02:28 with an appraisal. 02:29 Let's say a ring comes in and it has an appraisal of $10,000. 02:34 Can the person that donated that expect to get $10,000 02:39 for that when we sell it? 02:40 There's a saying, "I'm just the messenger. " 02:45 "Don't kill the messenger. " 02:46 I've had quite a bit of experience with jewelry 02:49 at this time, as you well know. 02:50 We've been through a lot of jewelry. 02:53 I didn't know, six years ago I was unfamiliar 02:56 with the way the jewelry world actually works. 03:01 I've got quite an education in it at this point. 03:05 Appraisals are basically for insurance values only. 03:08 That means if you can claim it on an insurance claim, 03:12 that's basically what it is. 03:15 It's not a fair market value price. 03:17 A fair market value price is a price in which it's realistic. 03:22 If you can pull up on the computer. 03:25 Which is a great tool, by the way, for this type of thing. 03:28 If you can pull up on the computer, and we can find 03:31 let's say 7 or 8 items, almost similar or almost exactly 03:35 like the one that you have. 03:37 We take an average of what those prices are that the 03:41 particular piece is bringing. 03:43 That's a current market value price. 03:45 That is the whole world bidding on those items. 03:48 A lot of people don't understand that. 03:51 When we auction items on the internet. 03:55 That's not just a small world there that's looking. 03:59 That's the whole world. 04:00 That's why it's a great tool to be able to go to the internet 04:04 and say this is the fair market value. 04:07 The whole world can bid on this item. 04:10 When it goes for a certain amount you can be sure 04:13 That's the going price for this day, this time, and this week. 04:18 That's what it's going for. 04:19 A lot of people are disappointed. Is that right? 04:23 They expect... well I'll say one thing here. 04:26 With jewelry people are told that it is an investment. 04:30 Now is that true that it's a good investment? 04:34 They think maybe the jewelry should be even worth more 04:36 than what they paid for it. 04:38 Once again, don't kill the messenger. 04:40 I'll try not. 04:41 There's such a great mark-up from the retail end. 04:45 Which is what most people base their prices upon. 04:49 It is what they have actually given for a jewelry item. 04:52 It's just marked up so tremendously. 04:57 It's like driving a new car off the parking lot 05:00 and six months later want to retain the same money that you 05:03 gave for that new automobile. 05:05 It is just not going to happen. 05:08 So diamonds do not just increase because they are diamonds. 05:11 That's not a good investment. 05:13 No, and it's a very unfair game that a lot of jewelers 05:17 and jewelry stores play. 05:19 I've heard it over and over, the stories 05:22 of this will be a great heirloom to hand down someday. 05:25 It will increase in value 05:27 and the appraisals will be accordingly so. 05:31 Once again, the appraisals are basically if you can 05:35 claim it on an insurance claim. 05:37 Right! We've talked on several programs about the things 05:42 that we like to receive: coins, china, and silverware. 05:47 Those are things that we can do well with. 05:50 but, there was something we wanted to bring 05:51 to your attention also, that does very well for us, 05:55 and that is vehicles. 05:57 We're talking trucks, cars, and recreational vehicles. 06:01 When we talk about those recreational vehicles 06:04 is it the same kind of a thing, is there appraisal value 06:08 or is there a fair market value? 06:10 How do you come to the worth of that is it as complicated 06:13 as the jewelry. 06:14 It's a little more of a science, anything is more of a science 06:21 than the jewelry at this point. 06:23 The Kelly Blue Book, the NADA books, which we can pull up 06:29 and get a price which is a guideline to what that vehicle 06:35 might be worth depending on a lot of things. 06:37 Condition, how many miles does that vehicle have, the body 06:41 and inside and outside condition of that vehicle. 06:44 Speaking of such, we had just gotten in a wonderful truck. 06:49 It was in pretty much mint condition, wasn't it? 06:52 It was in very good condition. 06:54 It had a few dings and scratches on the outside, but it was 06:57 overall in very good condition. 06:59 It was a 2000 model. 07:01 Right, and it was low mileage. 07:03 Very low mileage, yes. 07:04 Those are the kind of things we are looking for. 07:07 If somebody wants to donate a vehicle, of course there has to 07:13 be a way to pick it up. 07:14 How do we know if that vehicle is going to be worth all the 07:19 time and effort and money it takes to go pick it up? 07:22 Well, gas is one factor involved with that. 07:28 We know how gas has fluctuated over the last few months. 07:32 We have to mathematically figure it out, and if it's worthwhile, 07:37 we will come and get that item and pick it up. 07:40 It has to be worthwhile, or like my grandma used to say 07:43 we're not trading nickels. 07:44 This is all about bringing money into the good works of 3ABN, 07:49 through these items. 07:50 Right, if it's in good enough condition, low mileage, 07:54 and things like that, where it can actually be worth the time 07:58 and the effort it takes, hey we'll come and get it. 08:00 Absolutely, we sure will. 08:02 I want to roll in something right now. 08:05 I want to show you a little of the items we have for sale, 08:09 and let you see some of them. 08:10 This is a set of china and crystal we are looking at. 08:15 We've got silverware, we've got home decor, 08:20 and some really nice things. 08:22 That's a beautiful set of china. 08:24 We do pretty well with the china and the crystal also. 08:28 We have some American Brilliant cut glass that we have done 08:32 wonderful with. 08:33 This is a completely handmade doll that was made 08:37 from porcelain, and molded, baked and painted. 08:40 One woman gave us her whole collection of those dolls. 08:43 Absolutely beautiful! 08:45 These are commercial dolls that have also done very well. 08:49 We have an assortment of items. 08:54 There is a clock, and flowers that we can use. We can sell. 08:59 I do most of my selling on the internet. 09:01 You do most of yours privately, is that right? 09:06 Well, after several years of feeling it out, 09:11 we go which direction works the best for us. 09:13 We have several alternatives or several avenues 09:17 in which we can do that. 09:18 Absolutely! You had something you wanted to mention 09:21 about the vehicles that come in. 09:23 Yes, we have quite a few vehicles that come in 09:28 from time to time. 09:29 Of course, we sell these vehicles. 09:32 You are receipted for what we sell them for, 09:35 as we sell them. 09:36 Here at the campus of 3ABN we have a need in house 09:40 for some of the vehicles. 09:43 Sometimes we will not sell these items, but we use them here, 09:48 and you will be receipted accordingly. 09:50 Right, for the value of that vehicle, they will be receipted. 09:54 Absolutely! 09:55 OK! We need to roll in this vehicle. 09:59 OK! Great! There is a truck. 10:02 We went to... Where did we go to get that, Idaho? 10:06 We picked that up in Idaho, and drove it back. 10:08 It had only 35,000 actual miles on it. 10:11 Very nice vehicle, as you can see our carpentry department 10:16 uses that now. 10:17 Here is a 5th wheel camper that was donated, 10:20 and has actually already sold. 10:23 We get a variety of these kind of items 10:25 in very good shape, and it's something that will bring money 10:30 in for our program. 10:31 Right, and we have used some of those campers here, also. 10:35 We have a lack of apartments here and places 10:40 for people to stay when they come to do programs. 10:42 Sometimes we can put those campers into good use. 10:45 We have hook-ups here and someone can stay in there 10:48 if we're a little short on space, 10:50 like at camp meeting time. 10:51 That's a helpful thing to us also, when we do it 10:55 right here at 3ABN. 10:56 Tell us a little bit about coins. 10:58 Do you really like to get coins? 11:00 Well, coins are one of those items that I think probably 11:04 brings the most proceeds into our department. 11:07 They are very good. 11:09 They are a lot more of a science than jewelry is, for example. 11:13 I get what we call a coin dealer newsletter. 11:18 I get them weekly, monthly, and I get them quarterly. 11:21 I'm up to date on those coins on whoever sends what in. 11:26 I know what they are worth and we have very good outlets 11:29 that we get a premium for the coins that come in. 11:32 So, that is more of a science. 11:34 Absolutely! 11:35 You like gold. 11:36 We're starting to roll in a few of the items now. 11:39 There are coins, gold coins, and silver coins. 11:44 Right here is an Americana series. 11:48 I've gotten several of these. 11:50 People like to put those on their desk. 11:52 Here are some of the watches, and some of the 11:55 gold pocket watches. 11:57 Here's a mirror that we just sold. 12:00 Absolutely. We got a big price out of that mirror. 12:03 We did very well with that. 12:05 Here are some of the other coins that we get that are in 12:09 mint condition. Actually those are proof type coins. 12:12 Here are some that have what we call been slabbed 12:14 by some of the certified agencies. 12:17 Oh, this is our ivory. 12:21 Is that right? Was it ivory? 12:22 Yes! 12:23 Carvings that we have are supposed to be pure ivory. 12:25 Absolutely! It's amazing what the people send to us. 12:31 We get such an assortment and for me sometimes 12:35 it's like Christmas, because all these new boxes that come in 12:38 I can't wait to see what's in them. 12:40 You open them up and you're just oohing and aahing over them. 12:43 We have quilts and different handmade articles that come in. 12:47 We have some antiques, but dolls I do so well with, 12:52 if they're in mint condition, and in their original box, 12:56 with their original receipts, and COA's. 12:58 It's like Christmas around here sometimes to open the boxes 13:03 and see what the viewers have given us. 13:05 They are so kind. 13:08 How many times have we gotten heirlooms and things 13:11 that they could have passed down to their children, 13:14 but they want to finish the Lord's work. 13:16 That's true. These are truly gifts from the heart. 13:21 If you have something that you would like to donate? 13:24 Please call and talk to us about it. 13:27 You can call the 800 number. 13:38 Ext. 3078 13:41 Or you can e-mail us. 13:43 Send us an e-mail and tell us what you have. 13:45 We'll tell you what we can about it. 13:48 If it's not worth your time, your effort or your shipping, 13:52 or if it is something only as Bruce said trade nickels 13:55 for nickels. So be sure to contact us by e-mail 14:00 Write us, call us, |
