In the first two episodes of the Adventure Race 00:00:14.34\00:00:16.44 our teams hike three peaks and floated several 00:00:16.45\00:00:18.91 miles on the Colorado River. 00:00:18.92\00:00:20.57 The peaks were tall, each one over 12,000 feet 00:00:21.30\00:00:24.24 and difficult to climb, but the river trip was 00:00:24.25\00:00:27.04 a breeze. It was Sabbath, so nobody complained 00:00:27.05\00:00:29.72 about it being an easy and restful day. 00:00:29.73\00:00:32.00 Here is a regional map of Utah; 00:00:32.79\00:00:34.71 it depicts the area where our teams have been 00:00:34.72\00:00:37.09 doing the adventure race. Let's zoom in on the 00:00:37.10\00:00:40.00 three peaks; first they climbed 12,482 foot 00:00:40.01\00:00:45.77 Mount Tukuhnikivatz, try and say that again. 00:00:45.78\00:00:48.92 Then they climbed 12,721 foot Mount Peale, 00:00:49.75\00:00:54.15 which is the tallest of the three peaks. 00:00:54.16\00:00:56.57 Lastly they climbed 12,645 foot Mount Mellenthin. 00:00:57.21\00:01:02.01 The following day on Sabbath our teams drove 00:01:02.75\00:01:05.78 to the Colorado River, they put in here just down 00:01:05.79\00:01:09.53 river from where the Delores feeds into the 00:01:09.54\00:01:11.67 Colorado. Then they took up right here. 00:01:11.68\00:01:16.13 In this episode of the Adventure Race our teams 00:01:16.14\00:01:18.55 will hike the White Canyon which is near 00:01:18.56\00:01:20.50 Lake Powell. The White is one of many slot 00:01:20.51\00:01:23.55 Canyons that crisscross the four corners region 00:01:23.56\00:01:26.36 of the desert southwest. Slots are deep and 00:01:26.37\00:01:29.45 narrow canyons carved out of solid sandstone. 00:01:29.46\00:01:32.54 They form long and convoluted mazes that 00:01:32.96\00:01:35.61 attract thrill seekers from all over the world. 00:01:35.62\00:01:38.18 Let's watch as our teams descend into the deep 00:01:38.66\00:01:41.47 and dark and damp bowls of the earth. 00:01:41.48\00:01:43.73 Let's zoom in on the canyon, 00:01:44.15\00:01:45.77 they will put in here and then zigzag through 00:01:45.78\00:01:50.90 deep and dark and sometimes damp sections 00:01:50.91\00:01:53.86 until they take out right here. The route is 00:01:53.87\00:01:57.85 about 5 miles and will take approximately 00:01:57.86\00:02:00.57 8 hours to complete. 00:02:00.58\00:02:02.24 Sometimes it's necessary to use ropes to repel 00:03:00.85\00:03:03.57 off clips and other high places in slot canyons. 00:03:03.58\00:03:06.44 In this case one team decided to practice 00:03:07.30\00:03:09.96 wrapping and arch before entering the way. 00:03:09.97\00:03:12.17 It can be scary standing on the edge of a 00:03:12.18\00:03:14.83 precipice, but you can't change your mind 00:03:14.84\00:03:17.42 afterwards, there's no turning back once you pull 00:03:17.43\00:03:20.92 the rope, you have to keep pressing on, 00:03:20.93\00:03:23.17 which is also an interesting and 00:03:23.18\00:03:25.97 awesome spiritual object lesson. 00:03:25.98\00:03:27.95 The black color on the sides of the canyon walls 00:04:07.26\00:04:09.61 is caused by iron mineral deposits. 00:04:09.62\00:04:11.95 Their colorful stripes and crazy striations 00:04:12.35\00:04:15.08 create a kaleidoscope affect that 00:04:15.17\00:04:16.91 is interesting to look at. 00:04:16.92\00:04:18.20 Somebody jump in come on, no way. 00:04:32.92\00:04:35.26 It's not uncommon to run into animals and 00:04:55.98\00:04:58.37 critters down in the canyons. 00:04:58.38\00:05:00.06 We have seen deer, coyotes, ringtails, cows, 00:05:00.55\00:05:03.81 foxes, mice, lizards and even rattlesnakes. 00:05:03.82\00:05:07.22 You never know what's ahead or around have been 00:05:07.23\00:05:09.88 which makes hiking slot canyons a real adventure. 00:05:09.89\00:05:12.99 Try; always try to find the 00:05:28.17\00:05:30.19 easiest way down, good. 00:05:30.20\00:05:31.51 Now, I have got a load. No, yes, like, 00:05:49.08\00:05:51.00 it's that one can't, check the other group 00:05:52.53\00:05:54.81 too from Siberia, its about from where 00:05:54.82\00:05:57.85 you start like where we hike here you know 00:05:57.86\00:05:59.82 elevation chains, you don't like I mean 00:05:59.83\00:06:02.89 above where you end up and there is a huge 00:06:02.90\00:06:06.17 800 feet, and there is a huge sand slide. 00:06:06.18\00:06:09.50 And what you can do is just literally run down 00:06:10.22\00:06:14.22 800 feet sand slide. You start running 00:06:14.23\00:06:16.72 and just taking huge strides and the sand so 00:06:16.73\00:06:20.21 fine it will start to float like water behind you 00:06:20.22\00:06:23.07 and it's just like, just like, 00:06:23.08\00:06:24.24 in each stride you drop. Yes. It takes you about 00:06:26.37\00:06:30.37 I think 800 feet. 00:06:30.38\00:06:32.38 Oh! It seems its like sand my grip and that 00:06:36.19\00:06:39.15 steep that you can just like, it's sinking in 00:06:39.16\00:06:41.87 sand right up the knees. 00:06:41.88\00:06:43.81 How nice you got a plane shoes and stuff. 00:06:54.36\00:06:57.00 Mark jump right up and you can go that direction. 00:06:59.49\00:07:03.71 You having fun? Oh! Yeah. Right, nice. 00:07:07.66\00:07:15.52 You can take those rocks, one of them. 00:07:19.68\00:07:22.60 Oh! Yeah, I think its old stuff. We have 00:07:23.29\00:07:25.26 start swimming. We have to swim through 00:07:25.27\00:07:30.28 stuff like that. Yep. 00:07:30.29\00:07:33.40 Go ahead and throw it off. Let's take it. 00:07:41.88\00:07:45.83 Here's the second, stand in there. 00:07:48.16\00:07:49.90 Mike and we have to go this way, yeah let's go. 00:07:53.31\00:07:56.57 Yeah okay, what's up? 00:08:14.42\00:08:15.83 That's like right next to, 00:08:15.84\00:08:17.34 I have been queuing at the, I have been, 00:08:17.35\00:08:22.10 you walk for 10 minutes we do that again 00:08:32.82\00:08:36.10 and then you get out and you walk for 10 minutes 00:08:36.94\00:08:38.96 and you give a little shorter one. 00:08:38.97\00:08:40.25 So, you know all-and-all you are in water and 00:08:41.17\00:08:43.73 out of water. All the time in chain for, 00:08:43.74\00:08:46.43 within half an hour. 00:08:48.40\00:08:49.37 You are trying to not get wet, 00:09:18.99\00:09:20.24 I am, I am Tim too. 00:09:20.25\00:09:23.21 Left foot in there, left foot, 00:09:27.49\00:09:29.37 there you go, right foot right here, yeah. 00:09:29.38\00:09:34.91 Our team members have to watch every step 00:09:42.20\00:09:44.49 they take, you never know, 00:09:44.50\00:09:46.26 if the surface is going to be solid or slippery 00:09:46.27\00:09:49.04 so you never know if you're going to stay put 00:09:49.05\00:09:52.04 or fall helter skelter. If you land on sand or a 00:09:52.05\00:09:55.50 rock you can hurt yourself and if you land in 00:09:55.51\00:09:58.08 water the freezing cold can be shocking. 00:09:58.09\00:10:00.86 Here we go, come on, you can stand on the 00:10:20.99\00:10:30.36 log and if it fall down you can jump from. 00:10:30.37\00:10:32.08 You stand there on the peak or how should 00:10:44.40\00:10:48.96 I go up there. Sit down 00:10:48.97\00:11:01.65 and stand up in here. 00:11:09.33\00:11:10.49 God doesn't want us to sit on fence, 00:11:21.54\00:11:23.34 you know we consider ourselves with the Church 00:11:23.35\00:11:25.52 in Laodicea you are neither hot nor cold, 00:11:25.53\00:11:28.06 and I would vomit you out of my mouth. 00:11:28.07\00:11:30.10 He would rather as be happy and part of this 00:11:30.97\00:11:33.62 world that deserve two masters. 00:11:33.63\00:11:36.91 And it says at the end, No servant can serve 00:11:38.30\00:11:42.10 two masters: for either he will hate the one, 00:11:42.11\00:11:44.74 and love the other; or else you will hold to 00:11:44.75\00:11:47.13 the one, and despise the other. 00:11:47.14\00:11:48.83 So, you either hate or hold on or excuse me 00:11:50.17\00:11:54.55 rather hold on or hate or despise. 00:11:54.56\00:11:58.36 He would rather you hate sin and love him instead 00:11:59.61\00:12:02.98 of just loosely holding on to Jesus Christ. 00:12:02.99\00:12:05.04 Just having a causal relation with him, 00:12:06.01\00:12:07.84 going to Church on Sabbath, you know once in 00:12:07.85\00:12:09.88 a while having a prayer, once in a having your 00:12:09.89\00:12:11.62 study. Just, just holding onto him and kind of 00:12:11.63\00:12:15.32 hating sin. And I remember when I was going to 00:12:15.33\00:12:18.00 high school and I used to love sports you know 00:12:18.01\00:12:20.53 and Friday nights mean I couldn't compete. 00:12:20.54\00:12:23.10 You know I couldn't play football. 00:12:23.86\00:12:25.21 And it used to drive me crazy, 00:12:25.75\00:12:26.94 here I was a Christian; you know how unhappy 00:12:26.95\00:12:29.08 I was? I didn't have a close walk with Jesus 00:12:29.09\00:12:32.14 and I just wanted that sinful world. You know, 00:12:32.15\00:12:35.80 look at all the relationships people 00:12:36.48\00:12:38.10 have before marriage, I mean its something 00:12:38.11\00:12:40.53 that it's on and all the, the news its on the 00:12:40.54\00:12:44.05 television and all the programs and you would 00:12:44.06\00:12:47.14 desire to have those sexual relationships. 00:12:47.15\00:12:49.36 So, you kind of hold onto the Lord and you 00:12:50.36\00:12:52.66 despise evil but you don't really hate it. 00:12:52.67\00:12:55.29 Soon that parable Jesus said, 00:12:56.82\00:12:58.36 I rather you would be one side or the other side, 00:12:58.37\00:13:00.59 if you are gonna be on other side of evil be wise 00:13:01.21\00:13:03.21 and be happy, but I rather be wise for me, 00:13:03.22\00:13:07.67 rather you love me, spend your talents and your 00:13:08.96\00:13:11.98 time loving me and not sitting on the fence. 00:13:11.99\00:13:14.77 Hey Dan. I am gonna take a sheet over there, 00:13:30.53\00:13:42.88 okay, I will hold the camera. 00:13:42.89\00:13:44.54 That's when we do it, 00:13:52.53\00:13:53.50 back up and run right there. 00:13:54.62\00:13:56.50 No, Larry, you are going around the corner, 00:14:01.76\00:14:03.15 I have my left foot on that slip spots, 00:14:03.43\00:14:05.27 it doesn't, hey worse case scenario we have got 00:14:06.69\00:14:11.87 sandals on and the water is all about six 00:14:11.88\00:14:13.57 inches deep. Yes. Come on, 00:14:13.58\00:14:18.07 you got to swim and get your camera. 00:14:18.08\00:14:24.15 Oh! You did without jumping, alright, 00:14:24.16\00:14:26.79 nice, nice job, then as take your ride here. 00:14:26.80\00:14:31.96 The pools and slot canyons are extremely 00:14:33.66\00:14:36.02 cold which is why our teams are wearing 00:14:36.03\00:14:38.15 wet suits. The temperatures can be as 00:14:38.16\00:14:40.73 cold as 45 degrees, now that's cold. 00:14:40.74\00:14:43.89 After a while your hands and feet gets so numb 00:14:44.63\00:14:47.51 they hurt. Hypothermia is a real threat, 00:14:47.52\00:14:50.91 on more than a few occasions we have 00:14:51.61\00:14:53.94 stopped to build a fire in order to warm up which 00:14:53.95\00:14:57.08 seems strange because the temperatures above 00:14:57.09\00:14:59.58 can reach a 130 degrees and yet down below we 00:14:59.59\00:15:03.49 need a fired to warm up. 00:15:03.50\00:15:04.82 The desert is truly a place of wild extremes. 00:15:05.42\00:15:08.66 Hey hold on, had a right turn there, left we 00:15:16.07\00:15:24.86 stand right there, here, yeah, here we go. 00:15:24.87\00:15:28.09 There you see, you have got a lot of side 00:16:54.74\00:16:57.22 up there about 600 feet from, from towards areas. 00:16:57.23\00:17:00.71 Hey move, hey move, yeah you gonna move. 00:17:23.46\00:17:25.65 The water will rush right down here, 00:17:34.17\00:17:35.32 you can actually get down here and take a drink 00:17:35.33\00:17:36.64 those coming down, take a shower, yeah, 00:17:36.65\00:17:38.76 you sit there. The sun is setting and 00:21:07.01\00:21:09.49 they're nice and tired, 00:21:09.50\00:21:10.53 but it's been a great hike. 00:21:11.16\00:21:12.38 They will remember this one for a long time. 00:21:12.88\00:21:14.92 The Adventure Race will continue next episode, 00:21:35.20\00:21:37.30 our teams will drive back to Moab to ride 00:21:37.82\00:21:39.88 mountain bikes on the world famous 00:21:39.89\00:21:41.83 Slick Rock Trail. There is nothing like 00:21:41.84\00:21:44.04 riding on rolling sandstone hills. 00:21:44.05\00:21:46.66 This is also the last phase of the race, 00:21:47.24\00:21:49.11 so you don't wanna miss it.
