Welcome back to the Ultimate Prescription. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 I'm Nick Evenson here with Dr. James Marcum. 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.33 And on today's program, 00:00:04.37\00:00:05.70 we've been talking about slowing disease. 00:00:05.73\00:00:07.70 And a lot of that has to do with lifestyle choices. 00:00:07.74\00:00:09.90 And, Dr. Marcum, you shared about a new book 00:00:09.94\00:00:12.07 that you're gonna be working on 00:00:12.11\00:00:13.44 to help get that word out to more people. 00:00:13.48\00:00:14.88 Slow but sure, I've been working on this, 00:00:14.91\00:00:16.75 Nick, and thinking back over many years, 00:00:16.78\00:00:19.71 you know, I've been making television programs 00:00:19.75\00:00:22.08 since probably about 2004, 2005. 00:00:22.12\00:00:25.59 And, you know, the approach has changed through the years 00:00:25.62\00:00:29.32 based on maturity, and knowledge, 00:00:29.36\00:00:31.89 and interactions. 00:00:31.93\00:00:33.26 And I've been blessed with having interacted 00:00:33.29\00:00:36.46 with some of the best minds in the United States. 00:00:36.50\00:00:39.00 And I get some of the most interesting patients 00:00:39.03\00:00:42.14 and challenges ever in the office every week. 00:00:42.17\00:00:45.61 And I try to ask God for wisdom, 00:00:45.64\00:00:48.94 and let Him guide me in things I should learn 00:00:48.98\00:00:52.35 and things I should stay 00:00:52.38\00:00:53.72 and how to put this all together. 00:00:53.75\00:00:56.28 And over time, you know, life changes dramatically. 00:00:56.32\00:00:59.75 Yeah. 00:00:59.79\00:01:01.12 And sometimes, you know, 00:01:01.16\00:01:02.49 I can boil a lot of what I've learned 00:01:02.52\00:01:04.49 over the last nearly 30 years now 00:01:04.53\00:01:07.00 in the just a few sentences now. 00:01:07.03\00:01:09.56 And one is that we all have bad genes. 00:01:09.60\00:01:13.97 We all need a savior. 00:01:14.00\00:01:15.34 Yeah. 00:01:15.37\00:01:16.71 And as long as we have that in our health, 00:01:16.74\00:01:19.81 we're in a safe place. 00:01:19.84\00:01:22.14 And that's why, you know, 00:01:22.18\00:01:23.98 I wanted to talk about the importance of worship. 00:01:24.01\00:01:27.65 Worship is the key 'cause when we walk with God, 00:01:27.68\00:01:31.15 He helps us to make the lifestyle changes, 00:01:31.19\00:01:33.79 helps us with lifestyle medicine, 00:01:33.82\00:01:35.72 but sometimes God doesn't allow everyone to be well 00:01:35.76\00:01:38.79 in the short-term. 00:01:38.83\00:01:40.50 Sometimes He uses our illnesses to heal us permanently. 00:01:40.53\00:01:44.17 Some people that are perfectly healthy 00:01:44.20\00:01:45.63 might not turn to God for help. 00:01:45.67\00:01:47.90 You know, they might think they can do it all themselves. 00:01:47.94\00:01:50.64 But no, we all have bad genes. 00:01:50.67\00:01:52.97 We all need a savior. 00:01:53.01\00:01:54.61 And that's one thing that I learned 00:01:54.64\00:01:56.21 there's nothing wrong with modern medicine, 00:01:56.24\00:01:58.61 but some people fall off that ditch of thinking 00:01:58.65\00:02:00.68 that medicines can fix everything. 00:02:00.72\00:02:02.82 And they also have a lot of fear in their lives, okay? 00:02:02.85\00:02:06.32 Because they fear the unknown, they fear the ultimate demise, 00:02:06.35\00:02:09.42 we all gonna wear out at some point. 00:02:09.46\00:02:11.86 Then there's the other ditch of the ditch of lifestyle, 00:02:11.89\00:02:15.33 there's something I can do to heal 00:02:15.36\00:02:16.80 myself perfectly. 00:02:16.83\00:02:18.33 The way I eat, the way I exercise, 00:02:18.37\00:02:20.40 the way I think I can do it, I can do it, I can do it. 00:02:20.44\00:02:23.81 But no, that's a dangerous ditch as well. 00:02:23.84\00:02:26.41 But the path really to true healing is keeping 00:02:26.44\00:02:28.58 our eyes on Jesus 00:02:28.61\00:02:30.25 because that's gonna help us 00:02:30.28\00:02:31.61 to have the power for the right reasons for the lifestyle, 00:02:31.65\00:02:34.52 to know the appropriate place for modern medicine, 00:02:34.55\00:02:37.49 and to realize we all have bad genes, 00:02:37.52\00:02:40.26 and we have this need for a savior. 00:02:40.29\00:02:42.22 And there's nothing that we do. 00:02:42.26\00:02:44.06 There's nothing that we believe that does that. 00:02:44.09\00:02:47.40 God saves us and allows us as we walk with Him. 00:02:47.43\00:02:51.43 So that was why I wanted to put some effort into developing 00:02:51.47\00:02:54.84 and researching what worship is? 00:02:54.87\00:02:57.87 And we spent quite a bit of time researching... 00:02:57.91\00:03:00.64 Well, what does 10 minutes of worship look like? 00:03:00.68\00:03:04.21 Why 10 minutes? 00:03:04.25\00:03:05.58 Because that's what the studies have shown. 00:03:05.61\00:03:07.42 You know, in our world, 00:03:07.45\00:03:08.78 everyone wants to do things fast. 00:03:08.82\00:03:10.25 What does worship look like? 00:03:10.29\00:03:12.29 And that's why worship starts, 00:03:12.32\00:03:13.89 you know, with warming up 00:03:13.92\00:03:16.52 getting ready to meet with the Savior. 00:03:16.56\00:03:18.53 You know, if you met 00:03:18.56\00:03:19.89 with the President of the United States, 00:03:19.93\00:03:21.56 you put your tie on 00:03:21.60\00:03:22.93 and brush your teeth, you know... 00:03:22.96\00:03:24.30 Right. 00:03:24.33\00:03:25.67 When you meet with the God of the universe, 00:03:25.70\00:03:27.04 I believe there are certain things 00:03:27.07\00:03:28.40 we have to do. 00:03:28.44\00:03:29.77 Yeah. Okay. 00:03:29.80\00:03:31.14 There's some warm-up, 00:03:31.17\00:03:32.51 we have to get some of that stress off our brain. 00:03:32.54\00:03:33.88 I believe that when we come to God, 00:03:33.91\00:03:35.24 you know, we have to pray asking, asking, 00:03:35.28\00:03:37.88 you know, when He says, 00:03:37.91\00:03:39.25 "You knock at my heart I'm gonna let you in." 00:03:39.28\00:03:41.18 Ask Jesus to come into my life, 00:03:41.22\00:03:43.05 to forgive my sins, to make me clean. 00:03:43.08\00:03:45.29 Ask the Holy Spirit to my life, then we're forgiven, 00:03:45.32\00:03:48.26 then we can come to the God of the universe in worship. 00:03:48.29\00:03:51.46 Have a short worship prayer, and then, 00:03:51.49\00:03:54.26 you know, thank and praise. 00:03:54.30\00:03:56.06 You know, our God wants to be thanked and praised. 00:03:56.10\00:03:58.73 He doesn't need us. 00:03:58.77\00:04:00.10 You know, He's got us safe in His hands no matter what, 00:04:00.14\00:04:03.30 He doesn't need us any way, shape, or form, He allows us. 00:04:03.34\00:04:06.88 So we can have a closer relationship with Him. 00:04:06.91\00:04:10.05 And as we worship through 00:04:10.08\00:04:11.58 the course of days in and days out, 00:04:11.61\00:04:13.21 we will be changed. 00:04:13.25\00:04:14.58 That's right. We will be changed. 00:04:14.62\00:04:16.35 And that, in my opinion, 00:04:16.38\00:04:18.05 after all these years of working 00:04:18.09\00:04:20.06 with all this modern technology and lifestyle, 00:04:20.09\00:04:23.02 I think that is the single key to health is our worship. 00:04:23.06\00:04:27.43 And I want everyone to remember that if nothing else, 00:04:27.46\00:04:30.30 I wanna encourage people for their health, 00:04:30.33\00:04:32.53 stay in worship. 00:04:32.57\00:04:34.50 I don't think there's a better source 00:04:34.54\00:04:36.14 of hope than that. 00:04:36.17\00:04:37.51 It's just knowing that we're safe in Jesus, 00:04:37.54\00:04:38.87 and that regardless 00:04:38.91\00:04:40.24 what happens with our medical conditions, 00:04:40.28\00:04:42.14 God got us in His hands. 00:04:42.18\00:04:43.51 That's correct. 00:04:43.55\00:04:44.88 And then we've got a few questions 00:04:44.91\00:04:46.25 that have come into our website. 00:04:46.28\00:04:47.62 We do. 00:04:47.65\00:04:48.98 We have a lot of questions, 00:04:49.02\00:04:50.35 HeartWiseMinistries.org is the website. 00:04:50.39\00:04:51.72 If you have a question, you can go there. 00:04:51.75\00:04:53.39 And someone from our team will respond in a timely manner, 00:04:53.42\00:04:56.22 and I get you some general advice 00:04:56.26\00:04:57.69 to point you in the right direction. 00:04:57.73\00:04:59.06 So go ahead and go there and ask the doctor 00:04:59.09\00:05:00.50 a question on our website. 00:05:00.53\00:05:02.40 So let's start with this question here. 00:05:02.43\00:05:04.00 Someone writes in and asks, 00:05:04.03\00:05:05.37 "Are there different types of cardiologists?" 00:05:05.40\00:05:07.54 Yes, there are. 00:05:07.57\00:05:08.90 And there are many different types now. 00:05:08.94\00:05:10.74 There used to be just one type, okay? 00:08:23.33\00:08:24.67 Greens are great for the heart, 00:08:24.70\00:08:26.03 but in general, 00:08:26.07\00:08:27.40 all the fiber type foods, 00:08:27.44\00:08:29.04 you know, things that grow are good for the heart. 00:08:29.07\00:08:31.54 Fruits have antioxidants, which are beneficial. 00:08:31.57\00:08:35.41 Nuts have some omega-3 fatty acids 00:08:35.44\00:08:38.05 that seem to be beneficial for the body. 00:08:38.08\00:08:40.42 Of course, the greens help nitrousoxide 00:08:40.45\00:08:42.62 and its chemicals that make the arteries bigger 00:08:42.65\00:08:44.82 and healthier for the heart. 00:08:44.85\00:08:46.39 All of those things that grow 00:08:46.42\00:08:49.16 any type of fiber helps the bowel flora. 00:08:49.19\00:08:51.69 So the bowel flora is in charge of inflammation, 00:08:51.73\00:08:54.66 making chemicals like trimethylamine oxidase, 00:08:54.70\00:08:57.40 which can cause oxidation, 00:08:57.43\00:08:59.07 these plaques in arteries to become unstable. 00:08:59.10\00:09:02.10 A lot of different things in our body 00:09:02.14\00:09:03.71 that can help the bowel flora. 00:09:03.74\00:09:06.31 When we eat fiber improves, 00:09:06.34\00:09:08.08 that can also even help our brain health, 00:09:08.11\00:09:10.45 helps us with depression and anxiety. 00:09:10.48\00:09:12.68 So the body is uniquely interacted at multiple levels. 00:09:12.71\00:09:16.79 It's very fascinating. 00:09:16.82\00:09:18.35 As you start to learn, you realize 00:09:18.39\00:09:20.12 how complicated things really are. 00:09:20.16\00:09:22.06 Yeah, 00:09:22.09\00:09:23.43 I think we've got time just for one more question here. 00:09:23.46\00:09:24.99 And maybe you can tie 00:09:25.03\00:09:26.36 this in with a biblical prescription. 00:09:26.39\00:09:27.86 Someone writes and ask, 00:09:27.90\00:09:29.36 "Is mental stress dangerous to my heart?" 00:09:29.40\00:09:32.37 Yes, it is. 00:09:32.40\00:09:34.07 Whenever we have mental stress, 00:09:34.10\00:09:36.34 whether it's just a little bit like an anxiety disorder, 00:09:36.37\00:09:39.67 or ramped up of hiking phobias, 00:09:39.71\00:09:42.01 or even the highest levels of stress, 00:09:42.04\00:09:44.01 like post-traumatic stress or broken heart syndrome. 00:09:44.05\00:09:46.95 Yes, it turns on stress chemistry. 00:09:46.98\00:09:49.55 Stress chemistry ages not only the heart, 00:09:49.58\00:09:51.95 but it can age every different organ 00:09:51.99\00:09:53.72 in the body. 00:09:53.76\00:09:55.09 So stress is not a good thing. 00:09:55.12\00:09:57.06 Mental stress is not good at all. 00:09:57.09\00:09:58.59 Yeah, 00:09:58.63\00:09:59.96 let's take a look at our biblical prescription 00:10:00.00\00:10:01.33 for today. 00:10:01.36\00:10:02.70 We've prepared one here, what is it? 00:10:02.73\00:10:04.07 That's Matthew 11:28. 00:10:04.10\00:10:07.34 And this is one of my most favorite texts 00:10:07.37\00:10:10.67 in the Bible. 00:10:10.71\00:10:12.04 It says, "Come unto me, 00:10:12.07\00:10:14.11 all ye that labor and are heavy laden, 00:10:14.14\00:10:16.81 and I will give you rest." 00:10:16.85\00:10:19.88 So when you think about coming to me, 00:10:19.91\00:10:22.05 what's that mean? 00:10:22.08\00:10:23.45 Be with me, have a relationship with me, 00:10:23.49\00:10:26.62 worship me. 00:10:26.65\00:10:27.99 And there's many different ways to worship. 00:10:28.02\00:10:29.89 You know, we have a 10-minute app. 00:10:29.92\00:10:31.89 Some people, of course, worship in the word, 00:10:31.93\00:10:33.96 worship in praying, worship in service. 00:10:34.00\00:10:36.87 Some people worship in nature, 00:10:36.90\00:10:38.37 worship in serving other people, 00:10:38.40\00:10:40.24 worship in music and song and praise, 00:10:40.27\00:10:42.67 many different ways to worship, 00:10:42.70\00:10:44.21 but when we do these things, we're coming into Him. 00:10:44.24\00:10:46.91 So when we do that, 00:10:46.94\00:10:48.28 all you labor and are heavy laden, 00:10:48.31\00:10:49.88 I think that counts for stress. 00:10:49.91\00:10:51.31 Absolutely. 00:10:51.35\00:10:52.68 And that stress can come from anywhere. 00:10:52.71\00:10:54.55 And we talked about different types of stress, 00:10:54.58\00:10:56.99 and God will give us. 00:10:57.02\00:10:58.69 He gives us. 00:10:58.72\00:11:00.06 It's a free gift when we come to Him. 00:11:00.09\00:11:01.86 He gives us rest. 00:11:01.89\00:11:03.76 Nick, this is a wonderful biblical prescription 00:11:03.79\00:11:06.49 this text and for me personally, 00:11:06.53\00:11:08.96 it's one of my favorites 'cause I know 00:11:09.00\00:11:11.60 that no matter what happens in life, 00:11:11.63\00:11:14.40 no matter how stressed out I might be from the stress 00:11:14.44\00:11:17.47 I see and some of the stress that I don't see it all, 00:11:17.51\00:11:21.01 that when I worship, I can get a physical benefit, 00:11:21.04\00:11:25.01 and hope not only for today, but hope for eternity. 00:11:25.05\00:11:28.88 That's right. 00:11:28.92\00:11:30.25 Dr. Marcum, thank you very much for sharing. 00:11:30.29\00:11:32.09 You have a unique perspective 00:11:32.12\00:11:33.59 and some really inspiring ideas about health. 00:11:33.62\00:11:37.19 And thank you for sharing this. 00:11:37.23\00:11:38.56 My pleasure. 00:11:38.59\00:11:40.06 Viewers, if you would like more information 00:11:40.10\00:11:42.16 about where you can find resources for health. 00:11:42.20\00:11:44.73 If you want to ask the doctor a question through our website, 00:11:44.77\00:11:47.14 you can visit HeartWiseMinistries.org, 00:11:47.17\00:11:49.94 and you'll find a place there to ask the doctor. 00:11:49.97\00:11:52.47 You'll also find our prayer form 00:11:52.51\00:11:53.91 and you can go in there and submit a prayer request. 00:11:53.94\00:11:56.28 But then take a moment 00:11:56.31\00:11:57.65 and also please pray for the request 00:11:57.68\00:11:59.01 that other people have listed. 00:11:59.05\00:12:00.38 I'd also like to remind you 00:12:00.42\00:12:01.75 about our Biblical Prescriptions app. 00:12:01.78\00:12:03.72 It's a free download 00:12:03.75\00:12:05.09 on your Apple iOS device or on the Google Play Store, 00:12:05.12\00:12:08.59 you can download those. 00:12:08.62\00:12:09.96 And that will just give you a daily reminder 00:12:09.99\00:12:12.06 and a worship routine based around scripture, 00:12:12.09\00:12:14.60 so that you can help remember that scripture 00:12:14.63\00:12:16.36 and implement it in your life better every day. 00:12:16.40\00:12:19.33 And please also sign up for our newsletter. 00:12:19.37\00:12:21.60 There's a lot of great resources 00:12:21.64\00:12:22.97 on the website, and we just would like you 00:12:23.00\00:12:24.34 to stay engaged with us 00:12:24.37\00:12:25.71 and have a bit of a dialogue and build a relationship. 00:12:25.74\00:12:28.14 So thank you very much for watching today. 00:12:28.18\00:12:29.51 Dr. Marcum will close the program with prayer 00:12:29.54\00:12:31.48 in just a moment. 00:12:31.51\00:12:32.85 Let's take a moment right now 00:12:40.52\00:12:42.46 for each one of us to worship God through prayer. 00:12:42.49\00:12:46.49 Shall we bow our heads?
