Most of us know someone who's been impacted by cardiovascular 00:00:15.18\00:00:18.71 disease and too often it doesn't end well. But today we have an 00:00:18.75\00:00:21.95 opportunity to learn first hand from someone who's experienced 00:00:21.98\00:00:24.95 bypass surgery and you all know him well. Danny Shelton's here 00:00:25.02\00:00:28.62 to share his experience today on the Ultimate Prescription. 00:00:28.66\00:00:32.23 ¤ ¤ 00:00:34.70\00:00:53.55 Welcome, thank you for joining us today on the Ultimate 00:00:53.62\00:00:55.38 Prescription. I'm your host, Nick Evenson and today we have 00:00:55.42\00:00:58.79 Dr. James Marcum, speaker/ director of Heartwise Ministries 00:00:58.82\00:01:02.09 practicing physician, cardiologist and of course 00:01:02.12\00:01:04.39 Danny Shelton, Founder of Three Angels Broadcasting _. 00:01:04.43\00:01:07.73 Thank you for joining us today. 00:01:07.76\00:01:09.43 Oh it's my privilege to be here. Thanks for having me. 00:01:09.46\00:01:12.00 Well we have a very interesting story to tell. I guess it's a 00:01:12.03\00:01:16.20 story of a journey of life and we're going to talk about that. 00:01:16.24\00:01:20.34 Remember we've talked previously about we all have bad 00:01:20.38\00:01:24.45 genes and we all need a Savior and sometimes we're genetically 00:01:24.51\00:01:28.48 programmed for those genes to wear out and different stressors 00:01:28.52\00:01:32.59 in life can cause those genes to wear out. We're now learning 00:01:32.62\00:01:36.02 that each person has different things that trigger the genes to 00:01:36.06\00:01:39.39 get older. Some people, of course, we know it's smoking. 00:01:39.43\00:01:42.13 Some people just have it no matter what they do and when 00:01:42.16\00:01:44.80 genes wear out we have modern medicine that can help. We also 00:01:44.83\00:01:48.40 want to slow down genetic expression by different 00:01:48.44\00:01:51.77 lifestyle things that we can do and we talked about those. But 00:01:51.84\00:01:55.48 the key to all of this, the key that heals us, and that's what 00:01:55.51\00:01:58.81 we like to do in the balance is understanding that it's the 00:01:58.85\00:02:02.18 relationship with Jesus that heals us. Because even if we 00:02:02.25\00:02:05.32 have parts that wear out, we're all going to get old and die 00:02:05.35\00:02:08.42 unless God comes, but when we have Him we know in the 00:02:08.46\00:02:11.19 twinkling of an eye we're going to be healed. That's not only 00:02:11.26\00:02:14.80 a hope for today, but that's hope for eternity. That's why 00:02:14.83\00:02:17.57 Biblical prescriptions in our lives are something that we can 00:02:17.60\00:02:22.37 depend on. So Danny how did you first know that you might have a 00:02:22.40\00:02:27.14 problem? 00:02:27.18\00:02:28.51 Actually I was sitting home one evening and I just had a little 00:02:28.54\00:02:31.58 something that's unusual, almost like somebody scares you and you 00:02:31.61\00:02:35.25 take this breath and I noticed that and I didn't think too much 00:02:35.28\00:02:37.59 about it and the next night I noticed it also. And so I said 00:02:37.62\00:02:43.12 maybe I should have... my father, the history is my father 00:02:43.16\00:02:47.36 was disabled at 36 years old and couldn't work. Actually 00:02:47.40\00:02:50.53 you know he was able to get by but really couldn't do much in 00:02:50.57\00:02:55.54 life till he died at 51, which now at 68 that seems really way 00:02:55.57\00:03:00.14 too young. When I was 23 and he died and people said Oh he died 00:03:00.18\00:03:04.25 way too young. I thought man he's a half a century you know. 00:03:04.28\00:03:08.98 Now my daughter's almost, she's 48, sorry Melody. The good part 00:03:09.02\00:03:12.99 of this program showed a few years from now, she'll still be 00:03:13.05\00:03:17.53 48. Okay. So he died. Then some of my aunts and uncles, he had 00:03:17.56\00:03:21.73 about 12 or 13 brothers and sisters. Several of those died 00:03:21.76\00:03:25.83 of heart attacks. And my oldest brother, there's four boys and a 00:03:25.87\00:03:29.60 girls in my family, so my oldest brother Tommy, he had open heart 00:03:29.64\00:03:33.31 surgery about 10 or 12 years ago and nearly three years ago my 00:03:33.34\00:03:36.98 brother Kenny had open heart surgery and so I said well I 00:03:37.01\00:03:40.92 should have this checked out. 00:03:40.95\00:03:42.28 You had a strong genetic history of storing fat in arteries. 00:03:42.32\00:03:46.35 Absolutely. So I decided to go so I called Dr. Davis here, my 00:03:46.39\00:03:50.43 doctor in West Frankfurt, and so they said let's do a treadmill 00:03:50.46\00:03:54.50 test. We did the test. I did about six minutes on the test 00:03:54.53\00:03:57.63 then they said Oh you're fine there's nothing wrong with you, 00:03:57.67\00:04:00.90 you passed. And I said no keep going. And so they said well we 00:04:00.94\00:04:04.17 don't need to. I said no I want to... 00:04:04.21\00:04:05.87 Well why did you want to keep going? 00:04:05.91\00:04:07.48 Because I thought if I really have something wrong that 00:04:07.54\00:04:09.48 I wasn't even that tired. See I play basketball. At my age I 00:04:09.51\00:04:12.78 still run full court every week. I'm like how can you tell. I'm 00:04:12.81\00:04:15.88 not even breathing hard. So I said let's go. And of course you 00:04:15.92\00:04:18.75 know every three minutes they raise it so it's harder. So I 00:04:18.79\00:04:21.52 said let's go. Are you sure? I said yeah. Let's go nine 00:04:21.59\00:04:24.26 minutes. So after nine minutes they said well you can get off 00:04:24.29\00:04:27.43 now. I said no I want to keep going. They said why and I said 00:04:27.46\00:04:30.00 well if I have a heart attack I want to do it while you all are 00:04:30.07\00:04:32.57 here with me. Why would I want to do it on the basketball 00:04:32.60\00:04:35.44 court? So they said. So I'm still doing fine but really 00:04:35.47\00:04:38.27 starting to feel it. But at 11 minutes in they said you need to 00:04:38.31\00:04:41.98 get off. And I said no I want to finish. There's one more 00:04:42.01\00:04:44.71 minute. They said you need to get off. 00:04:44.75\00:04:46.08 They saw something, right? 00:04:46.11\00:04:47.45 Yeah. They said well we're not sure what it is but all your 00:04:47.48\00:04:50.49 vital signs say to limit. We need you to get off. So they 00:04:50.52\00:04:53.66 said we think it's maybe something electrical. We really 00:04:53.69\00:04:56.73 don't think it's your arteries. And of course my physician he 00:04:56.76\00:05:01.66 plays basketball with me. He's not yet 50. So he says well I 00:05:01.70\00:05:05.30 can't tell you I'm glad we're doing this but you know you're 00:05:05.33\00:05:08.87 not what I would look at because you run full court. I'm probably 00:05:08.90\00:05:12.27 the only guy my age who's still running full court basketball. 00:05:12.31\00:05:16.34 So anyway so then we decided I ought to go down to Carbondale 00:05:16.38\00:05:20.42 University and have an angioplasty thing. They did it 00:05:20.45\00:05:23.45 up my wrist. So they told me I'd be asleep. The guy said 00:05:23.49\00:05:26.42 you'll be awake but you won't remember it. So while they were 00:05:26.45\00:05:29.59 working on me I said now when am I supposed to forget this. 00:05:29.62\00:05:32.23 You know because I'm still... He said well after it's over 00:05:32.26\00:05:34.93 you probably will. Hopefully you won't remember but about two 00:05:34.96\00:05:38.33 or three minutes in I heard him say oh we need to stop. We've 00:05:38.37\00:05:42.07 got some blockage. And so they came out and then later they 00:05:42.10\00:05:45.84 come up in the afternoon and so a doctor came I'd never met, a 00:05:45.87\00:05:49.41 surgeon and he said well you have several blockages, a widow 00:05:49.44\00:05:51.71 maker. He explained. What do you call it when it's not crystalize 00:05:51.75\00:05:57.62 calcified down quite a ways. He said that's the most dangerous. 00:05:57.65\00:06:02.36 You're not blocked like 90 or 100 percent but probably that 00:06:02.39\00:06:06.56 may be 70 percent but the fact that it's calcified and you have 00:06:06.59\00:06:10.87 some other just probably 65 percent so we're going to go in. 00:06:10.90\00:06:15.14 And I said really? 00:06:15.17\00:06:16.50 I'm going to stop you right here So we talked about this before 00:06:16.54\00:06:19.81 so we have genetic disease that's been accumulating over 00:06:19.84\00:06:23.78 years. A person doesn't feel right. That's a symptom. And you 00:06:23.81\00:06:27.65 knew something wasn't quite right. We do the testing. We 00:06:27.68\00:06:31.19 have different testing that we do. You had an abnormality on 00:06:31.22\00:06:34.86 the testing even though you weren't having lots of symptoms. 00:06:34.89\00:06:38.23 Then you do another test called an angiogram. We look at the 00:06:38.26\00:06:41.46 arteries and learn more about them. We found out that they're 00:06:41.50\00:06:44.43 calcified. That's a sign that the arteries have been aging 00:06:44.47\00:06:47.27 genetically and even though you're not have a lot of problem 00:06:47.30\00:06:50.31 they find different blockages and they talk to you about all 00:06:50.34\00:06:53.31 your options. So what did they talk to you about? 00:06:53.34\00:06:55.74 Well you know what the surgeon says that I've never met. That's 00:06:55.78\00:06:58.98 what I kept thinking now I don't know this guy from anybody. So 00:06:59.01\00:07:02.35 he comes in and says you know in the morning we're going to 00:07:02.38\00:07:05.82 operate on you and we're going to do a bypass and probably 00:07:05.85\00:07:09.49 tomorrow if we can get the schedule. And I said, well why? 00:07:09.52\00:07:14.13 And he says you're obviously going to need it and he showed 00:07:14.16\00:07:18.07 me the results. And I said but I'm not 90 percent or 100. I'm 00:07:18.13\00:07:20.84 not even out of breath. I've never even had a chest pain in 00:07:20.90\00:07:23.51 my life, you know. Why would I do this? And he said, Well if 00:07:23.54\00:07:26.14 we're going to have it we might as well. So I said well 00:07:26.17\00:07:28.98 respectfully I really don't know you and not sure I'll even do it 00:07:29.01\00:07:32.15 at this hospital. So I said I have a really good friend who's 00:07:32.18\00:07:36.35 a cardiologist down in Chattanooga area and I want to 00:07:36.38\00:07:41.52 talk to him. And I have another friend who's a cardiologist out 00:07:41.56\00:07:45.93 in California, Dr. Schubert, and I said I want to get some advice 00:07:45.96\00:07:50.33 and they said, so you want to leave? You'll be at your own 00:07:50.37\00:07:54.44 risk. I said well I've been 67 years at my own risk but if 00:07:54.50\00:07:58.51 it's not an emergency then give me some time to think about it. 00:07:58.54\00:08:02.61 So Yvonne, my wife, she said why don't we go to Mayo Clinic 00:08:02.64\00:08:06.48 or somewhere like that. My thing is wait a minute; if I'm sick 00:08:06.51\00:08:10.19 then I need to go to the doctor I don't want to go 650 miles 00:08:10.22\00:08:14.06 north to Mayo Clinic and then once the surgery's over am I 00:08:14.09\00:08:17.93 going to have to stay in a hotel for 30 days. I just want to be 00:08:17.96\00:08:20.40 home. So I did some studies. You researched for me and told me 00:08:20.43\00:08:24.83 that the doctors in Carbondale is a good university which I'm 00:08:24.87\00:08:29.67 thankful for. Dr. Watson, you gave me his background and said 00:08:29.70\00:08:32.94 well you know you have some good options. So you didn't tell me 00:08:32.97\00:08:37.68 what to do but he gave me my options which is really nice and 00:08:37.71\00:08:40.72 then Dr. Schubert gave me some options and said now it's your 00:08:40.75\00:08:43.39 life so you guys decide what you want to do. So we decided to 00:08:43.42\00:08:48.02 stay here and I'm really glad I had Dr. Watson, great surgeon. 00:08:48.06\00:08:51.73 And the university hospital couldn't have treated us better. 00:08:51.76\00:08:56.46 I mean they were just... But I was only in four days. 00:08:56.50\00:08:59.57 Once you found out and started working through this, how did 00:08:59.60\00:09:04.91 you end up feeling inside when you made this decision to have 00:09:04.94\00:09:09.71 this? Not physically but more emotionally. 00:09:09.74\00:09:14.65 Oh yeah, yeah, Emotionally a lot of things go through your mind. 00:09:14.68\00:09:19.25 Because we all know we're going to die, but you know for 00:09:19.29\00:09:21.29 instance literally a week or two after I had my surgery a friend 00:09:21.32\00:09:26.16 of mine I grew up with and went to school with, high school and 00:09:26.19\00:09:28.76 graduated, business person in West Frankfort, and almost same 00:09:28.80\00:09:34.37 name, Shelby, Shelton and we sat together in all of our 00:09:34.40\00:09:35.74 classrooms and all that. He had the same surgery and he died in 00:09:35.77\00:09:40.98 the hospital. So you understand that when you go in there... But 00:09:41.01\00:09:45.85 amazingly when the morning we had the surgery, I made up my 00:09:45.88\00:09:50.72 mind to do it, of course you're taking a shower. Then you're 00:09:50.75\00:09:52.79 getting ready that morning and putting all the stuff on you and 00:09:52.82\00:09:55.46 so things are going through your mind. This may be the last day, 00:09:55.49\00:09:58.86 may be the last time you put on clothes. I mean those that's 00:09:58.89\00:10:01.36 been through there you think about this. May be the last time 00:10:01.40\00:10:04.23 I see my family. So my family and lots of folk here from 3ABN, 00:10:04.27\00:10:08.07 we had a huge crowd coming in which you're not really...You're 00:10:08.10\00:10:11.54 thankful for it but that's not... So I'm there. They're 00:10:11.57\00:10:14.31 getting me ready to go and I couldn't believe the peace that 00:10:14.34\00:10:17.48 I had. And I had a total peace because I said you know what 00:10:17.51\00:10:20.92 I win, either way I win. I come out and I'm better off than I 00:10:20.95\00:10:27.22 was. I make it through the surgery. Or if I don't, the 00:10:27.26\00:10:31.29 first face I'll see is Jesus. So suddenly there was just this 00:10:31.33\00:10:35.76 peace, that I wasn't even worried. I was thinking now... 00:10:35.80\00:10:38.30 I always tell them when I've had surgery before, now when are 00:10:38.33\00:10:41.37 going to give me the shot that makes me don't care. That's what 00:10:41.40\00:10:44.64 I want the don't care shot. I don't know what you call it but 00:10:44.67\00:10:47.24 they haven't given me anything yet and yet I found that peace 00:10:47.28\00:10:50.35 and like okay I'm ready. So when they came to get me I just said 00:10:50.38\00:10:54.05 Lord I'm in your hands. 00:10:54.08\00:10:55.42 Something physiologically was going on that was giving you 00:10:55.45\00:10:58.42 calm and peace. And that was that relationship with Jesus. 00:10:58.45\00:11:01.52 Yeah, yeah. And I didn't know. We don't know how we're going 00:11:01.56\00:11:06.56 to act till something like that happens. But I just was... of 00:11:06.59\00:11:09.70 course I confessed my sins and did things we should do but I 00:11:09.73\00:11:14.60 try to do that most of the time anyway. God knows your heart, 00:11:14.64\00:11:17.37 you know. Even though we make mistakes. We'll always make 00:11:17.41\00:11:20.18 mistakes but God knows. So I felt a peace about it. 00:11:20.21\00:11:24.08 It's always a challenge when I patient that doesn't feel that 00:11:24.11\00:11:30.12 bad. You know, 11 minutes on a treadmill. That's great, by the 00:11:30.15\00:11:32.35 way. A person that doesn't feel bad finds out that they have 00:11:32.39\00:11:36.79 disease. You know it's different if someone's had a heart attack 00:11:36.83\00:11:40.06 and having something that you have to do something. But when 00:11:40.10\00:11:43.03 someone really doesn't feel that bad and you don't know how the 00:11:43.06\00:11:45.93 disease is progressing. So it might have stayed this for a 00:11:45.97\00:11:48.47 while or it might have progressed. And remember they're 00:11:48.50\00:11:51.37 talking about bypass where we bring arteries south of the 00:11:51.41\00:11:53.98 blockages so the blood has another blood supply. It's 00:11:54.01\00:11:57.31 almost like insurance if something does happen. It 00:11:57.35\00:12:01.48 doesn't necessarily take away the problem but it's insurance 00:12:01.52\00:12:03.82 so if you have that problem, Oh you have an insurance policy 00:12:03.85\00:12:06.25 of extra blood going to your heart. So the problem is still 00:12:06.29\00:12:11.03 there, it's genetically still there. It didn't turn off your 00:12:11.06\00:12:14.60 genes. So sometimes it progresses, sometimes it 00:12:14.63\00:12:17.07 doesn't. But it's very hard when someone can do so well to say 00:12:17.10\00:12:20.04 I have to take the risk. Did they tell you about some of the 00:12:20.07\00:12:22.20 risks of the surgery? 00:12:22.24\00:12:25.07 Uh yes. Yeah, yeah. And of course, I had vocal cord surgery 00:12:25.11\00:12:30.58 three years ago and that to me was a simple procedure and they 00:12:30.61\00:12:33.21 said now you need to know one of the risks is death. And I'm 00:12:33.25\00:12:35.95 like you're just going to operate. And they said well any 00:12:35.98\00:12:38.32 time you go under anesthesia, you know, there's that risk. But 00:12:38.35\00:12:41.99 now in this case, of course, they walked me through all the 00:12:42.02\00:12:45.23 potentials but they also did a good job walking me through the 00:12:45.26\00:12:48.90 risks if you don't have it. And they did a good job at that. 00:12:48.93\00:12:52.30 So we're going to take a break here, Nick, and we're going to 00:12:52.33\00:12:57.01 talk about what it felt like after the surgery in a few 00:12:57.04\00:12:59.31 moments and then some of the things that you've gone through 00:12:59.34\00:13:01.48 that you can share with every body to know the ups and downs 00:13:01.51\00:13:04.21 you have after the surgery. 00:13:04.25\00:13:05.81 That's right and viewers at home if you have questions about some 00:13:05.85\00:13:08.88 of what you're hearing about from this procedure and some of 00:13:08.92\00:13:11.52 the different things that you should be considering.
