Same with 00:00:22.42\00:00:24.69 medications, get you over the hump until maybe we can get at 00:00:24.72\00:00:28.39 the cause of disease. So we talked in the last segment about 00:00:28.42\00:00:33.06 how the heart pumps blood through the blood vessels 00:00:33.09\00:00:35.46 that supplies the organs. We need that pressure, we need that 00:00:35.50\00:00:40.60 oxygen. We didn't have all of these devices when I started. 00:00:40.64\00:00:45.01 We did not have these, but now we've developed a pump we can 00:00:45.04\00:00:48.08 put into the heart to buy us some time to perfuse the organs 00:00:48.11\00:00:51.98 so they don't die while we can work on the heart and maybe help 00:00:52.01\00:00:55.42 a person out with a stent. Also sometimes the heart gets 00:00:55.45\00:01:00.02 infected and gets weak. We call that myocarditis or broken heart 00:01:00.06\00:01:05.29 syndrome. We use these devices to generate blood pressure for 00:01:05.33\00:01:09.96 the organs, give it some time to heal. We have the external 00:01:10.00\00:01:14.37 devices including the ECMO which is extracorporeal membrane 00:01:14.40\00:01:18.81 oxygenation, big name. 00:01:18.84\00:01:20.58 ECMO's a lot easier to remember. 00:01:20.61\00:01:22.94 Yeah. Ventricular assist devices that buy us some time. That's 00:01:22.98\00:01:27.42 really a device that can buy us some time for transplantation. 00:01:27.45\00:01:30.92 Some people are born with just congenital abnormalities in 00:01:30.95\00:01:33.86 their hearts. You know there's a condition that we see in women 00:01:33.89\00:01:37.26 occasionally called peripartum cardiomyopathy where after they 00:01:37.29\00:01:41.93 give birth their heart gets weak Infections can cause the heart 00:01:41.96\00:01:45.47 to get weak. You know, the function doesn't do well. It's 00:01:45.50\00:01:49.90 nothing that the person's done it's just their genetics and 00:01:49.94\00:01:52.61 it's life and these things happen. So this is a great place 00:01:52.64\00:01:55.88 to use modern medicine. 00:01:55.91\00:01:57.65 Now I'm sure some of our viewers are listening to this thinking 00:01:57.68\00:02:00.42 this sounds scary. I don't want any of those devices to every 00:02:00.45\00:02:03.15 have to be used on me and we don't either. So prevention 00:02:03.18\00:02:06.52 really is the key. 00:02:06.55\00:02:08.79 Yes it is. If we can prevent these from happening that's 00:02:08.82\00:02:11.49 much better, but you know we all have bad genes. 00:02:11.53\00:02:13.76 There's a time and a place. 00:02:13.80\00:02:15.13 Right, you know there are congenital things that happen. 00:02:15.16\00:02:17.17 We've got modern technology and now we can help babies with 00:02:17.20\00:02:21.37 congenital heart defects. There's a condition called 00:02:21.40\00:02:23.54 tetralogy that we can help tremendously with. I have a 00:02:23.57\00:02:27.48 young lady that came to me the other day with a congenital 00:02:27.51\00:02:30.68 condition called a coarctation where the aorta narrows and we 00:02:30.71\00:02:34.42 opened up her aorta so she can live longer. So there's lots of 00:02:34.45\00:02:38.09 things that we're born with that we didn't choose to have. So 00:02:38.12\00:02:42.22 modern medicine really has it's place but it doesn't get at the 00:02:42.26\00:02:47.66 cause of a lot of these things. So we talked in the last program 00:02:47.70\00:02:51.33 about the different rhythms of the heart. The heart function, 00:02:51.37\00:02:54.84 you know, the pumping mechanism, many things are involved in that 00:02:54.87\00:02:58.71 Right. A lot of the time we see arteries. Unfortunately to this 00:02:58.74\00:03:01.84 day we haven't figures out a way to replace arteries. 00:03:01.88\00:03:05.21 The arteries get clogged up we can bypass around them, we 00:03:05.25\00:03:08.82 can stent them but we can't replace arteries so easily. Now 00:03:08.85\00:03:12.22 we can put the whole new heart in, but we can't replace the 00:03:12.25\00:03:15.89 arteries. So that's why lifestyle you know, these 00:03:15.92\00:03:19.06 stressors including the food stressors, all of that's so 00:03:19.09\00:03:22.40 important to slow down genetic aging of the arteries. But we 00:03:22.43\00:03:25.80 talked a little about the rhythm this atrial fibrillation that's 00:03:25.83\00:03:28.50 so common. Now I'm going to quiz you a little bit Nick just to 00:03:28.54\00:03:31.04 see if you're paying attention in the past. Oh oh. All right. 00:03:31.07\00:03:36.04 Do you remember what atrial fibrillation is? 00:03:36.08\00:03:37.81 Yeah it's when the top chambers of the heart dot like this and 00:03:37.85\00:03:40.65 it's just an erratic rhythm, sometimes fast. 00:03:40.68\00:03:43.08 Right you got that right. The question is what is the real 00:03:43.12\00:03:45.52 danger when the heart's not squeezing rhythmically? 00:03:45.55\00:03:48.22 What's the danger of that? 00:03:48.26\00:03:52.76 So the blood could kind of get stuck in here and there's a 00:03:52.79\00:03:54.13 little part that particularly creates clots. Those clots 00:03:54.16\00:03:55.56 develop and get dislodged then you have an aneurysm, right? 00:03:55.60\00:03:59.03 Well not an aneurysm, no. An aneurysm's just a weak spot in 00:03:59.07\00:04:03.07 the blood vessels where they dilate and that's a serious 00:04:03.10\00:04:05.84 problem too. A stress. Right a stress. So the atrium is 00:04:05.87\00:04:10.48 fibrillating but we have a little pouch called the 00:04:10.51\00:04:13.01 appendage that clots tend to get in more. And for all the people 00:04:13.05\00:04:18.09 with atrial fibrillation unfortunately many people have 00:04:18.12\00:04:21.79 it now. It's an aging rhythm it's the most common rhythm 00:04:21.82\00:04:25.26 lots of heart things can cause it. When people have it one of 00:04:25.29\00:04:27.76 the dangerous things about it is a stroke. And it's been 00:04:27.80\00:04:32.03 estimated that one in three strokes come from this rhythm. 00:04:32.07\00:04:36.81 So we have lots of medicines that we talked about before but 00:04:36.84\00:04:40.28 some people cannot take medicines. They either have side 00:04:40.31\00:04:42.98 effects that are bad or they have bleeding elsewhere in the 00:04:43.01\00:04:45.31 body. Like if you have a stomach bleed, I can't give you a blood 00:04:45.35\00:04:48.75 thinner medicine. If you've bled in the head, I can't give you a 00:04:48.78\00:04:51.85 blood thinner medicine. If you've fallen down a lot I can't 00:04:51.89\00:04:55.02 give you a blood thinning medicine. So now recently 00:04:55.06\00:04:58.76 there's a new procedure that we can do to limit the clots and 00:04:58.79\00:05:02.66 it's called the Watchman. 00:05:02.70\00:05:04.50 Yeah, now we've got a video clip of this and I'd like you to 00:05:04.53\00:05:06.50 just tell us what's going on here in the Watchman procedure. 00:05:06.53\00:05:09.07 Well this is, again, put through the blood vessels in our body 00:05:09.10\00:05:14.38 so we don't have to cut. That's sort of what it looks like 00:05:14.41\00:05:17.71 before it goes in. So we move this through the blood vessels, 00:05:17.75\00:05:22.92 this is how we get to the heart. And we put it in. The patient's 00:05:22.95\00:05:24.29 awake, they're just mildly sedated and what we see is we 00:05:24.32\00:05:28.92 up inside the atrium. So we find the atrium. That's the atrium, 00:05:28.96\00:05:32.63 what it looks like from the inside. We cross from one side 00:05:32.66\00:05:36.83 of the atrium to the other to the left atrium and then we sort 00:05:36.87\00:05:39.13 of look around to make sure we're positioned carefully and 00:05:39.17\00:05:42.84 we have catheters and wires that get us where we need to go and 00:05:42.87\00:05:46.21 we look at the different things and the way that we do that 00:05:46.24\00:05:48.78 is we put a little dye out there in it to make sure we're 00:05:48.81\00:05:51.71 positioned correctly. So there's a little dye to make sure we're 00:05:51.75\00:05:54.92 in the correct spot; that's called the appendage. We're in 00:05:54.95\00:05:58.39 the correct spot so we inflate this device; it's called the 00:05:58.42\00:06:02.92 Watchman and see how it closes off that area. 00:06:02.96\00:06:04.93 So the appendage is a place where clots develop commonly. 00:06:04.96\00:06:08.60 And we place that securely. We make sure it's in the right 00:06:08.63\00:06:12.23 place with some dye. And now the place where most of the clots 00:06:12.27\00:06:15.64 come from in atrial fibrillation the clots can't get out and over 00:06:15.67\00:06:19.47 time that's what it will look like from the inside out. 00:06:19.51\00:06:21.88 The body puts a covering of skin over that that's called the 00:06:21.91\00:06:26.85 endothelium and that lowers the risk of people with afib that 00:06:26.88\00:06:29.82 can't take blood thinners from developing a clot. 00:06:29.85\00:06:33.19 So then, you may not know the answer to this, but what is the 00:06:33.22\00:06:36.76 appendage there for? Does it serve a purpose? 00:06:36.79\00:06:38.96 Well you know I assume that it helps in the pumping of blood 00:06:38.99\00:06:41.16 throughout the body. I'm sure that God had a purpose for it. 00:06:41.20\00:06:45.17 You know like the appendix. No one's really quite sure what 00:06:45.20\00:06:47.10 that's there for. But we can do without the appendage. It's not 00:06:47.14\00:06:52.54 something that we have to have. Just like we don't have to have 00:06:52.57\00:06:55.31 our appendix for life. And there are other things that we don't 00:06:55.34\00:06:58.18 have to have to live. But I'm sure it's there for some reason 00:06:58.21\00:07:02.25 or it was at some point to help the heart function better. 00:07:02.28\00:07:04.75 It does do some pumping in itself, the blood gets in it and 00:07:04.79\00:07:07.56 it does do a little bit of pumping. But it's sort of a sack 00:07:07.59\00:07:10.83 that clots can get in. And it's sort of a baggy area that most 00:07:10.86\00:07:14.93 of the clots in atrial fibrillation come from. 00:07:14.96\00:07:17.03 So this is a place where modern medicine can help. Let's say 00:07:17.07\00:07:22.34 you've had atrial fibrillation for years and it's because it 00:07:22.37\00:07:26.81 runs in your family. And you come to my office and you've 00:07:26.84\00:07:31.65 been on it for years, haven't had a stroke, thank goodness. 00:07:31.68\00:07:34.08 Or maybe you've had a little stroke and you don't want 00:07:34.12\00:07:38.12 another one and you've been on blood thinners successfully for 00:07:38.15\00:07:40.29 five or ten years. But something else in the body gets older. 00:07:40.32\00:07:44.19 Let's say you have a little bleeding in the bowels, okay, 00:07:44.23\00:07:48.86 and it's not safe to put you on the blood thinners, or you get 00:07:48.90\00:07:51.90 older and you're falling a lot and it's not safe. However you 00:07:51.93\00:07:55.74 don't want to take the added risk of stroke because the 00:07:55.77\00:07:57.11 atrial fibrillation is still there. So we would say, hey, 00:07:57.14\00:08:01.38 listen you know we can lower your risk of stroke dramatically 00:08:01.41\00:08:04.58 with this Watchman procedure. So we would schedule you to have 00:08:04.61\00:08:08.25 this Watchman procedure and you'd still have to be on blood 00:08:08.28\00:08:11.05 thinners for a while because there's clots that can form. 00:08:11.09\00:08:13.96 We'd have you on it for a while and then eventually though we 00:08:13.99\00:08:16.99 could stop the blood thinners and that would lower the risk 00:08:17.03\00:08:19.33 of bleeding again from another source. So that's the use of 00:08:19.36\00:08:22.93 modern technology really to help people with atrial fibrillation 00:08:22.96\00:08:26.90 lower the risk of having a stroke. 00:08:26.94\00:08:28.50 Yeah. I'd say in a situation like that if I needed it I would 00:08:28.54\00:08:31.97 be very happy that the Watchman procedure was available. 00:08:32.01\00:08:34.91 Yeah, well it's pretty high tech but, like I said, there is a 00:08:34.94\00:08:37.15 place for medications for emergencies or parts that wear 00:08:37.18\00:08:40.12 out like the electrical system that wears out and atrial 00:08:40.15\00:08:44.12 fibrillation or medical problems trigger the atrial fibrillation. 00:08:44.15\00:08:47.26 Yeah, now we've talked about electrical systems of the heart 00:08:47.29\00:08:49.59 in previous programs, but what are some developments in 00:08:49.62\00:08:52.53 pacemakers and defibrillators? 00:08:52.56\00:08:53.90 Well pacemakers you know when the wires get old and they go 00:08:53.93\00:08:57.97 too slow pacemakers are great. Some people die prematurely 00:08:58.00\00:09:00.94 just because the wires get old first and everything gets old at 00:09:00.97\00:09:05.77 different speeds based on your mom and dad and the stress you 00:09:05.81\00:09:08.98 put on your genes. So let's say I've had people in their 40s 00:09:09.01\00:09:12.08 that the first thing that wore out was the wires of their heart 00:09:12.11\00:09:14.58 Well we can put in pacemakers. We didn't have them 200 years 00:09:14.62\00:09:18.62 ago, the people would die young. But now we can extend their life 00:09:18.65\00:09:22.22 just by putting in pacemakers. They've gotten smaller and 00:09:22.26\00:09:25.99 smaller, more safe to put in. We even have pacemakers that are 00:09:26.03\00:09:29.76 small like ticks that can be implanted into a heart and 00:09:29.80\00:09:33.47 there's no wires at all. These aren't the best ones and these 00:09:33.50\00:09:36.50 are really for people that are very, very sick and can't 00:09:36.54\00:09:38.81 undergo procedures. But the technology of pacemaking... 00:09:38.84\00:09:42.28 Not only do we have pacemakers but we can control them. We can 00:09:42.31\00:09:45.31 look at the battery, how long they last. We've made them 00:09:45.35\00:09:49.12 smaller and compatible so people can exercise and do things with 00:09:49.15\00:09:52.22 them. The original pacemakers were very big and bulky. Now 00:09:52.25\00:09:58.36 they are small. It used to be since they were magnetic they 00:09:58.39\00:09:59.73 had to stay away from magnetic fields like MRIs, but now we've 00:09:59.76\00:10:02.90 made them MRI compatible. It's pretty amazing what the 00:10:02.93\00:10:08.80 pacemakers have done to keep the electrical system that's 00:10:08.84\00:10:11.57 going too slow, or the wires that wear out, or the battery 00:10:11.61\00:10:14.71 that wears out to keep a heart going and a person living longer 00:10:14.74\00:10:18.25 So we have a lot of neat technology. 00:10:18.28\00:10:20.12 Yeah, a lot of great advancements that can 00:10:20.15\00:10:21.55 be of benefit to our viewers there. I want to get to the 00:10:21.58\00:10:25.09 Biblical prescription because, well technology continues to 00:10:25.12\00:10:28.29 change. We know that God's word doesn't change and it's always 00:10:28.32\00:10:32.16 relevant, so Dr. Marcum if you'd share with us a Biblical 00:10:32.19\00:10:33.53 prescription today. 00:10:33.56\00:10:34.90 Yeah I want to take us... You know Biblical prescriptions are 00:10:34.93\00:10:37.37 something that we can depend on for life. They're something that 00:10:37.40\00:10:40.87 don't change that we can use every single day because God's 00:10:40.90\00:10:44.54 word is our true source of strength and our true source 00:10:44.57\00:10:48.98 of healing. So I want to turn us to 2 Timothy 1:7... 00:10:49.01\00:11:02.19 So God didn't make us to be scared and frightened and if we 00:11:02.22\00:11:07.30 think about it our world is filled with more things to be 00:11:07.33\00:11:11.20 scared about all the time. I was listening to the news and 00:11:11.23\00:11:14.90 reading the newspaper. We have wars everywhere, we have people 00:11:14.94\00:11:18.54 that are sick. We have all sorts of things that cause different 00:11:18.57\00:11:22.31 types of people being scared. And that turns on the stress 00:11:22.34\00:11:26.92 chemistry which causes our brains to actually downshift. 00:11:26.95\00:11:30.12 So when we're downshifting our body we just want to stay alive. 00:11:30.15\00:11:33.76 So we make a lot of these chemicals like adrenaline and 00:11:33.79\00:11:36.83 cortisol and leukotrienes and cytokines that actually cause 00:11:36.86\00:11:39.66 us to get older, 00:11:39.69\00:11:41.86 turns on our bad genetics, causes us to age. Then we need 00:11:41.90\00:11:47.37 the place for modern medicine because things get old and wear 00:11:47.40\00:11:51.37 out, like we talked about today. 00:11:51.41\00:11:52.74 I've experienced that in my own life. When I get stressed out 00:11:52.77\00:11:54.74 about something I'm working on you know if I just put my head 00:11:54.78\00:11:57.68 down and say okay I'm going to do this myself, it generally 00:11:57.71\00:12:00.48 doesn't go as well as if I just like relax and be like Lord 00:12:00.52\00:12:04.15 guide me through this. Help me not be stressed. Help me to be 00:12:04.19\00:12:07.99 focused and to be productive rather than just getting 00:12:08.02\00:12:10.99 stressed and causing all these negative chemicals in my body. 00:12:11.03\00:12:13.23 So that's not how we're created but He wants us to have power 00:12:13.26\00:12:16.26 and love and sound mind. How do we get that. Well from being 00:12:16.30\00:12:18.90 with Him. By beholding we become changed. To know God is to love 00:12:18.93\00:12:23.44 love God. So it gets back to our worship, how we can change our 00:12:23.47\00:12:27.14 chemistry. We can turn off some of this fear and anxiety that's 00:12:27.18\00:12:30.51 causing our bodies to malfunction.
