Welcome back to the Ultimate Prescription. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 I'm your host Nick Evenson, here with Dr. James Marcum. 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.73 And, Dr. Marcum, today we're talking 00:00:04.77\00:00:06.20 about cardiovascular disease. 00:00:06.23\00:00:08.20 And you kind of laid out what it is 00:00:08.24\00:00:10.41 and what the cardiovascular system is. 00:00:10.44\00:00:12.07 But recap just a little bit about what we discussed. 00:00:12.11\00:00:14.24 Well, you know, this is a very complex topic 00:00:14.28\00:00:17.01 and we can't cover everything. 00:00:17.05\00:00:18.38 But the key points I wanna let people know 00:00:18.41\00:00:21.05 is that we all have bad genes, 00:00:21.08\00:00:23.32 and ultimately we all need a savior. 00:00:23.35\00:00:26.25 And we have our genes that get bad 00:00:26.29\00:00:28.69 and we put stress on those genes, 00:00:28.72\00:00:30.86 when those genes malfunctions we have symptoms. 00:00:30.89\00:00:33.60 So we wanna do everything we can 00:00:33.63\00:00:35.16 to keep stress off our genetics. 00:00:35.20\00:00:37.37 We wanna learn when to apply modern medicine 00:00:37.40\00:00:39.80 if we have symptoms. 00:00:39.83\00:00:41.20 We wanna have the power to have lifestyle changes. 00:00:41.24\00:00:43.74 And we realize that lifestyle might be nutrition, 00:00:43.77\00:00:46.61 it might be sleeping better. 00:00:46.64\00:00:48.21 Every aspect of our life 00:00:48.24\00:00:49.74 can affect the expression of genes 00:00:49.78\00:00:51.55 'cause it can put stress on it. 00:00:51.58\00:00:53.11 Which stressor individually is the greatest, 00:00:53.15\00:00:55.78 is really genetically determined. 00:00:55.82\00:00:57.65 So I don't know about your family 00:00:57.69\00:00:59.19 but you know, my family, 00:00:59.22\00:01:00.56 we've diabetes that runs in our family. 00:01:00.59\00:01:02.96 Some people have other genetic things, 00:01:02.99\00:01:04.99 some people store fat in the arteries, 00:01:05.03\00:01:06.46 some people store fat in the arteries 00:01:06.49\00:01:07.83 of the brain, the heart etc. 00:01:07.86\00:01:09.53 So if we do store fat, we wanna have less fat in us, 00:01:09.56\00:01:12.63 so we wanna go to a healthier nutrition. 00:01:12.67\00:01:15.37 We also know that when people sit around, 00:01:15.40\00:01:17.67 things get older quicker. 00:01:17.71\00:01:19.14 You know, you get stiff. Right. 00:01:19.17\00:01:20.54 So all of these different stressors 00:01:20.58\00:01:22.41 effect genetic expression. 00:01:22.44\00:01:24.18 When we have genes malfunction, we have a symptom, 00:01:24.21\00:01:26.72 then we run to the doctor. 00:01:26.75\00:01:28.42 So that's a key, 00:01:28.45\00:01:29.78 but we also know no matter what this is, 00:01:29.82\00:01:31.42 some people like the gentleman I talked about, 00:01:31.45\00:01:34.16 he had heart disease at a young age. 00:01:34.19\00:01:36.22 So sometimes no matter what we do, 00:01:36.26\00:01:38.29 we still have problems 00:01:38.33\00:01:40.16 and that's when we really know 00:01:40.20\00:01:41.86 the most important thing 00:01:41.90\00:01:43.23 is to have our spiritual life intact, 00:01:43.26\00:01:45.33 because God heals us in His time, in His ways. 00:01:45.37\00:01:48.97 So as long as we're walking with Him, 00:01:49.00\00:01:51.34 that's very, very reassuring 00:01:51.37\00:01:53.48 and that is treatment for diseases itself 00:01:53.51\00:01:55.74 'cause it gives us reassurance today 00:01:55.78\00:01:58.08 that we're doing everything we can, 00:01:58.11\00:01:59.71 and hope for eternity. 00:01:59.75\00:02:01.08 And we also want to learn eventually, 00:02:01.12\00:02:02.98 as we talked today about different things 00:02:03.02\00:02:05.02 biblically we can use to apply to our life, 00:02:05.05\00:02:07.72 to actually treat and prevent the expression 00:02:07.76\00:02:10.79 of this genetic problems. 00:02:10.83\00:02:12.16 That's right. 00:02:12.19\00:02:13.53 You know sometimes just having the hope of, 00:02:13.56\00:02:14.90 you know, being reunited with our loved ones 00:02:14.93\00:02:16.60 and with Jesus someday, that can reduce the stress. 00:02:16.63\00:02:18.53 Yes. 00:02:18.57\00:02:19.90 And that's actually, it manifests 00:02:19.93\00:02:21.27 in physical benefits sometimes as well. 00:02:21.30\00:02:22.64 You know, and I had a colleague 00:02:22.67\00:02:25.01 tell me about a friend that had... 00:02:25.04\00:02:28.24 He was a doctor friend of mine. 00:02:28.28\00:02:29.78 He had patient that had a little lesion in his liver, 00:02:29.81\00:02:33.55 and it was right near a vein called the portal vein. 00:02:33.58\00:02:36.52 And we weren't sure what that lesion was, 00:02:36.55\00:02:38.45 whether it was a cancerous or benign, 00:02:38.49\00:02:41.66 but it was in a hard spot to biopsy. 00:02:41.69\00:02:43.73 Right. 00:02:43.76\00:02:45.09 So the decision was made 00:02:45.13\00:02:46.46 just to keep an eye on it, okay. 00:02:46.49\00:02:48.33 But this guy got so scared that it affect his genetics, 00:02:48.36\00:02:52.90 he made adrenaline and cortisol, 00:02:52.93\00:02:54.54 all the stress chemistry, 00:02:54.57\00:02:56.14 and he died about one year into his diagnosis. 00:02:56.17\00:02:59.97 So they did the autopsy 00:03:00.01\00:03:01.41 and found out that this was benign. 00:03:01.44\00:03:04.35 He had no real problem. 00:03:04.38\00:03:05.71 He basically died from fear. 00:03:05.75\00:03:07.88 And even in the heart world 00:03:07.92\00:03:10.29 we have these conditions called the broken hearts syndrome 00:03:10.32\00:03:13.36 where we have a lot of stress and fear. 00:03:13.39\00:03:15.89 Stress and fear also damages our body. 00:03:15.92\00:03:18.43 These are major stress 00:03:18.46\00:03:19.79 that affect some people more than another. 00:03:19.83\00:03:22.20 So when God says, be anxious about nothing, 00:03:22.23\00:03:24.60 there's real Bible truths behind that. 00:03:24.63\00:03:27.50 Yeah. 00:03:27.54\00:03:28.87 Let's get back to cardiovascular disease. 00:03:28.90\00:03:30.24 So let's talk about some of the symptoms. 00:03:30.27\00:03:31.61 We already discussed, 00:03:31.64\00:03:32.97 there's a lot of different conditions 00:03:33.01\00:03:34.34 that can be involved with cardiovascular disease. 00:03:34.38\00:03:36.14 But what are some of the symptoms 00:03:36.18\00:03:37.51 that people might experience? 00:03:37.55\00:03:38.88 I know, tightness in the chest, or pain in the chest, but... 00:03:38.91\00:03:40.75 Well, first I think it's important 00:03:40.78\00:03:42.75 that we define the word symptoms, okay? 00:03:42.78\00:03:45.35 Okay, yeah. 00:03:45.39\00:03:46.72 Symptoms is anything an individual has 00:03:46.76\00:03:49.16 that does not feel right. 00:03:49.19\00:03:50.83 Okay? 00:03:50.86\00:03:52.19 And it could be many different expressions. 00:03:52.23\00:03:54.06 Now in the heart, okay, for instance, 00:03:54.10\00:03:56.77 a chest pressure or something that won't go away. 00:03:56.80\00:03:59.70 Well, that could be a heart attack, 00:03:59.73\00:04:01.30 also be it reflux, lot of things, 00:04:01.34\00:04:02.94 but heart attack can kill you quick. 00:04:02.97\00:04:05.27 So any discomfort I tell, 00:04:05.31\00:04:06.78 any discomfort or abnormal feeling 00:04:06.81\00:04:09.21 above the waist that won't go away, 00:04:09.24\00:04:11.78 needs to be evaluated. 00:04:11.81\00:04:13.42 Sometimes it could be pressure, sometimes it could be pain, 00:04:13.45\00:04:16.62 sometimes you could feel like indigestion. 00:04:16.65\00:04:18.69 Sometimes it could be extreme shortness of breath. 00:04:18.72\00:04:21.66 Sometimes it could be dizziness passing out. 00:04:21.69\00:04:24.39 Sometimes it could be a fast heartbeat. 00:04:24.43\00:04:26.36 But all of these are abnormal feelings 00:04:26.39\00:04:28.76 that need to be investigated right now. 00:04:28.80\00:04:31.50 So the symptoms vary 00:04:31.53\00:04:32.87 and in diabetics the symptoms are much different, 00:04:32.90\00:04:35.24 in women they are much different, 00:04:35.27\00:04:36.81 the older you get the most different. 00:04:36.84\00:04:38.87 But in all my years of practice, 00:04:38.91\00:04:40.61 I tell people that any symptom 00:04:40.64\00:04:42.54 above the waist that's unexplainable 00:04:42.58\00:04:45.01 and that won't go away, 00:04:45.05\00:04:46.38 you need to get evaluated right now. 00:04:46.41\00:04:49.12 So that's one class, one class of people. 00:04:49.15\00:04:51.59 Okay. 00:04:51.62\00:04:52.95 Do you have a question? Well, I was gonna ask. 00:04:52.99\00:04:54.32 So I know some times people are reluctant, right? 00:04:54.36\00:04:56.22 'Cause we don't wanna waste money, 00:04:56.26\00:04:57.59 we don't want to go to the hospital, 00:04:57.63\00:04:59.23 whack up this wheel, and then have it be nothing. 00:04:59.26\00:05:00.70 Yes. 00:05:00.73\00:05:02.06 But what do people need to do though, 00:05:02.10\00:05:03.43 like should they be reluctant 00:05:03.47\00:05:04.80 or should they get it checked out? 00:05:04.83\00:05:06.17 No, no. This is important? 00:05:06.20\00:05:07.54 If you have a symptom that's unexplained, 00:05:07.57\00:05:08.90 that's your body is saying something is not right. 00:05:08.94\00:05:11.87 I'm having one of these malfunctions 00:05:11.91\00:05:13.88 that we talked about. 00:05:13.91\00:05:15.31 You know, if I've had a little bit of disease, 00:05:15.34\00:05:17.45 now, it's a lot of disease, 00:05:17.48\00:05:18.81 I need to know what's going on. 00:05:18.85\00:05:20.42 And as time goes on, 00:05:20.45\00:05:22.25 you know when you're younger 00:05:22.28\00:05:23.62 you don't have all these feelings. 00:05:23.65\00:05:24.99 But as people age, 00:05:25.02\00:05:26.35 every part of the body ages, 00:05:26.39\00:05:27.92 there's gonna be more symptoms. 00:05:27.96\00:05:29.29 Yeah. 00:05:29.32\00:05:30.66 And you have to explain what they are 00:05:30.69\00:05:32.03 'cause you wanna make sure it's not something 00:05:32.06\00:05:33.40 that's going to kill you, right? 00:05:33.43\00:05:34.76 Right, right. 00:05:34.80\00:05:36.13 Now, it's very important, so that's one class, 00:05:36.16\00:05:38.23 symptoms that starts right now that won't go away. 00:05:38.27\00:05:40.80 Okay. Okay? 00:05:40.84\00:05:42.17 Now there's another class of symptoms 00:05:42.20\00:05:43.77 related to the heart, 00:05:43.81\00:05:45.97 things that happen intermittently, okay? 00:05:46.01\00:05:48.58 Let's say, you used to be able to ride your bike every day. 00:05:48.61\00:05:51.75 Okay, you like to ride your bike. 00:05:51.78\00:05:53.11 Yep, love it. Okay? 00:05:53.15\00:05:54.48 Let's say every time, you'd go up a hill now, 00:05:54.52\00:05:56.85 you have a funny feeling in the heart, in this area. 00:05:56.89\00:06:00.82 And then when you slow down it goes away. 00:06:00.86\00:06:04.26 Well, that could be a heart symptom 00:06:04.29\00:06:05.89 'cause when the heart's under stress 00:06:05.93\00:06:07.36 it starts malfunctioning, it experienced 00:06:07.40\00:06:10.00 and then when it slows down it's relaxed, it goes away, 00:06:10.03\00:06:13.40 so that could be a symptom. 00:06:13.44\00:06:14.77 Let's say when you overdo it, 00:06:14.80\00:06:16.40 you get extremely short of breath, 00:06:16.44\00:06:17.84 much more than you ever had before. 00:06:17.87\00:06:20.14 That could be a symptom. 00:06:20.18\00:06:21.78 So a symptom that comes on, 00:06:21.81\00:06:23.38 when you used to be able to do a certain amount of activity 00:06:23.41\00:06:26.05 that you can't do any more, that could be a sign 00:06:26.08\00:06:29.15 that the heart or blood vessels 00:06:29.18\00:06:30.62 aren't getting enough oxygen to your cells, 00:06:30.65\00:06:33.15 and that part of the body is not performing well. 00:06:33.19\00:06:36.19 Right, yeah. 00:06:36.22\00:06:37.56 Does that make sense to you? Yeah. 00:06:37.59\00:06:38.93 Okay, and the most common ones I see is, 00:06:38.96\00:06:41.10 is a person who used to be able to walk up a hill, 00:06:41.13\00:06:43.26 now he can't do it, he's short of breath, 00:06:43.30\00:06:44.73 he has tightness, he has a funny feeling, 00:06:44.77\00:06:46.80 that is classic heart. 00:06:46.84\00:06:48.44 And some people say, "Oh, I'm just gonna ignore it, 00:06:48.47\00:06:50.84 I've just had a bad day." 00:06:50.87\00:06:52.21 But usually overtime, it gets progressively worse. 00:06:52.24\00:06:55.58 And if it gets progressively worse, 00:06:55.61\00:06:57.75 it's nice to nip it in the bud 00:06:57.78\00:06:59.81 to find out before that problem progresses 00:06:59.85\00:07:02.15 into a problem that won't go away 00:07:02.18\00:07:04.25 which is getting into a medical emergency. 00:07:04.29\00:07:07.86 Now when we talk about abnormal feelings, 00:07:07.89\00:07:10.49 it's so different for different people. 00:07:10.53\00:07:13.60 And when I've looked at things, there's no black or white, 00:07:13.63\00:07:15.96 there's lot of grey in life. 00:07:16.00\00:07:18.00 So a symptom for you might be a little bit different 00:07:18.03\00:07:20.54 than a symptom for someone else. 00:07:20.57\00:07:22.77 And that's why it's real important for people 00:07:22.80\00:07:25.21 to listen to each other, 00:07:25.24\00:07:26.74 talk about these abnormal feelings that we have. 00:07:26.78\00:07:29.58 I've had some people that all they have 00:07:29.61\00:07:30.95 is a numbness in their jaw when they do things. 00:07:30.98\00:07:34.15 Some heart attacks are presented 00:07:34.18\00:07:35.58 as pain in the shoulder blades, 00:07:35.62\00:07:37.99 but regardless they had been symptoms 00:07:38.02\00:07:40.79 that are unexplainable. 00:07:40.82\00:07:42.16 Okay, for instance, 00:07:42.19\00:07:43.53 if every time you walk you had pain 00:07:43.56\00:07:44.89 in your shoulder blade and I said, 00:07:44.93\00:07:46.73 "Nick, have you hurt your shoulder blade, 00:07:46.76\00:07:48.40 have you traumatized it?" 00:07:48.43\00:07:49.90 "No", then I'll say, "You have a heart problem." 00:07:49.93\00:07:52.70 And then we'd start investigating 00:07:52.73\00:07:54.50 to see the magnitude of it, 00:07:54.54\00:07:56.27 but at the same time I'd say, 00:07:56.30\00:07:57.64 "You know, this is an acute symptom, 00:07:57.67\00:07:59.57 something caused it to happen, 00:07:59.61\00:08:01.54 let's investigate that as well. 00:08:01.58\00:08:03.85 So there's many different aspects, 00:08:03.88\00:08:05.41 but any time a person is experiencing something 00:08:05.45\00:08:08.18 that doesn't feel right, that won't go away, 00:08:08.22\00:08:10.69 that's a trip to the doctor emergency room. 00:08:10.72\00:08:12.72 Right now anytime they have constant feelings 00:08:12.75\00:08:16.19 when they do thing that goes away 00:08:16.22\00:08:17.63 when you rest, Bible 00:09:11.58\00:09:13.15 that can lead us to better health 00:09:13.18\00:09:15.48 and to turn off the genes 00:09:15.52\00:09:17.32 and also to give us hope and courage. 00:09:17.35\00:09:19.62 And the one I want to share with us today 00:09:19.65\00:09:23.12 is from 1 Thessalonians 5:18. 00:09:23.16\00:09:26.63 1 Thessalonians 5:18, 00:09:26.66\00:09:28.76 and we'll get that text up 00:09:44.65\00:09:47.98 thanking for the bad, in everything give thanks. 00:09:48.02\00:09:51.85 And we've done the studies 00:09:51.89\00:09:53.66 and it shown when people give thanks, 00:09:53.69\00:09:55.52 guess what happens? 00:09:55.56\00:09:56.93 They turn off the stress chemistry, 00:09:56.96\00:09:59.23 blood pressure lowers, less heart attacks, 00:09:59.26\00:10:02.10 they rest better and in our busy world 00:10:02.13\00:10:04.67 sometimes we don't have time to thank God 00:10:04.70\00:10:07.20 for our illnesses, for our difficulties, 00:10:07.24\00:10:09.94 for everything give thanks 00:10:09.97\00:10:11.37 because that's a biblical prescription, 00:10:11.41\00:10:13.38 'cause that changes the physiology, 00:10:13.41\00:10:15.31 especially of aging. 00:10:15.34\00:10:17.08 It slowly slows down some of all the bad things 00:10:17.11\00:10:19.25 that's happening in our body. 00:10:19.28\00:10:21.08 So that's the biblical prescription
