Yeah. 00:01:56.98\00:01:58.31 My field has changed so much 00:01:58.35\00:01:59.71 and we want to update everyone on what we can do 00:01:59.75\00:02:01.82 in emergency situations. 00:02:01.85\00:02:04.12 But also, I've had the luxury of through the years 00:02:04.15\00:02:07.29 of being with some of the best lifestyle, 00:02:07.32\00:02:09.72 how to prevent disease, 00:02:09.76\00:02:11.09 nutritionists, I'm friends with 00:02:11.13\00:02:12.83 T.Colin Campbell and Eccleston 00:02:12.86\00:02:15.16 and some of those 00:02:15.20\00:02:16.53 that are on the cutting edge of nutrition 00:02:16.56\00:02:17.90 as well as mental health. 00:02:17.93\00:02:19.30 We're going to incorporate all of this into the treatment, 00:02:19.33\00:02:22.27 prevention of cardiovascular disease. 00:02:22.30\00:02:24.57 So it's going to be very unique. 00:02:24.61\00:02:26.04 But more than that, I've learned through my time 00:02:26.07\00:02:28.71 that there's a place for technology, 00:02:28.74\00:02:31.28 there's a place for lifestyle, 00:02:31.31\00:02:33.75 but the key to health 00:02:33.78\00:02:35.48 is in our relationship with Jesus, 00:02:35.52\00:02:37.29 because we all, we're going to discover, 00:02:37.32\00:02:38.79 we all have bad genes, 00:02:38.82\00:02:40.39 we're all going to wear out someday. 00:02:40.42\00:02:42.36 And as long as we have Christ in our heart, 00:02:42.39\00:02:44.66 He's the ultimate path to healing 00:02:44.69\00:02:46.49 and also help us know 00:02:46.53\00:02:47.90 when to use modern technology, 00:02:47.93\00:02:49.73 give us the power 00:02:49.76\00:02:51.10 to make those lifestyle changes. 00:02:51.13\00:02:52.93 So it's in these words 00:02:52.97\00:02:55.00 that we're going to give people, 00:02:55.04\00:02:56.37 not only the place to use all this technology, 00:02:56.40\00:02:59.44 how to make these lifestyle changes, 00:02:59.47\00:03:01.44 but give them biblical prescriptions. 00:03:01.48\00:03:03.48 Encourage them in their walk with Jesus 00:03:03.51\00:03:05.91 that someday is going to give hope, 00:03:05.95\00:03:07.45 not only for day, 00:03:07.48\00:03:08.82 but hope for eternity regarding our health. 00:03:08.85\00:03:10.85 So that's very good news. 00:03:10.89\00:03:12.22 We want to be positive, don't we, Nick? 00:03:12.25\00:03:13.59 Yeah, absolutely. 00:03:13.62\00:03:14.96 And, Dr. Marcum, I think it's a real treat, 00:03:14.99\00:03:16.62 that you're willing to come on 00:03:16.66\00:03:17.99 and share your practical advice 00:03:18.03\00:03:19.89 from what you learn everyday practicing 00:03:19.93\00:03:21.73 with real patients, you know, with our viewing audience. 00:03:21.76\00:03:23.87 So thank you for coming on and sharing. 00:03:23.90\00:03:25.23 Well, it's my pleasure. 00:03:25.27\00:03:26.60 And I wish you know, when I started, you know, 00:03:26.63\00:03:28.17 30 years ago now, I wish I would have known 00:03:28.20\00:03:30.81 all of these things and how to, but life evolves. 00:03:30.84\00:03:33.78 And the things we're talking about now 00:03:33.81\00:03:35.28 in lifestyle have changed dramatically. 00:03:35.31\00:03:37.35 The things we're talking about, 00:03:37.38\00:03:38.71 our modern medicine has changed. 00:03:38.75\00:03:40.08 But one thing that hasn't changed, 00:03:40.12\00:03:41.65 one thing that we can always depend on, 00:03:41.68\00:03:43.89 our source of truth, and that's the Word of God. 00:03:43.92\00:03:46.72 Because God gives us things 00:03:46.76\00:03:48.09 in the Bible that doesn't change, 00:03:48.12\00:03:49.66 that we can depend on, 00:03:49.69\00:03:51.03 that we don't have to relearn 00:03:51.06\00:03:52.39 every 10 years like some of this other. 00:03:52.43\00:03:54.50 So we're going to talk about some exciting things 00:03:54.53\00:03:57.67 in this program today. 00:03:57.70\00:03:59.13 Yeah, well, let's go ahead and jump into it here. 00:03:59.17\00:04:01.37 We're talking about cardiovascular disease. 00:04:01.40\00:04:04.04 And I've got a question for you 00:04:04.07\00:04:05.41 before we get into our script here. 00:04:05.44\00:04:07.14 How is cardiovascular disease different than heart disease? 00:04:07.18\00:04:10.28 Because I, when we first talked about this, 00:04:10.31\00:04:12.08 I thought it was kind of the same thing, 00:04:12.11\00:04:13.45 but it's slightly different, right? 00:04:13.48\00:04:14.82 Well, cardio, think about cardio, 00:04:14.85\00:04:16.48 that's the heart, cardio. 00:04:16.52\00:04:18.09 Vascular is blood vessels. 00:04:18.12\00:04:20.26 So card and it's blood vessels. 00:04:20.29\00:04:22.49 And in our body, there's about 60,000 miles of blood vessels. 00:04:22.52\00:04:27.30 So this is a very, you know, diffused topic 00:04:27.33\00:04:30.20 and the blood vessels go to every organ in the body. 00:04:30.23\00:04:33.47 So when we talk of vascular disease, 00:04:33.50\00:04:34.90 when you make your blood vessels healthy, 00:04:34.94\00:04:36.60 you're making your brain healthy, 00:04:36.64\00:04:38.17 you're making your eyes healthy, 00:04:38.21\00:04:39.87 you're making your liver, your stomach, 00:04:39.91\00:04:41.81 everything in your body, your joints healthy. 00:04:41.84\00:04:43.91 So when we make our blood vessels better, 00:04:43.95\00:04:46.05 every organ enjoys that. 00:04:46.08\00:04:48.18 Now, of course, the heart is the pump 00:04:48.22\00:04:50.55 that pumps all the good stuff, 00:04:50.59\00:04:52.35 the nutrients, the oxygen 00:04:52.39\00:04:54.12 throughout all these blood vessels, 00:04:54.16\00:04:55.82 which give our organs 00:04:55.86\00:04:57.19 the energy they need to function correctly, 00:04:57.23\00:04:59.36 the oxygen they need and why there, 00:04:59.39\00:05:02.26 the organs unload their waste. 00:05:02.30\00:05:04.97 You know the things that the toxic metabolites, 00:05:05.00\00:05:07.00 they don't go back into the blood vessels 00:05:07.04\00:05:09.14 and the blood vessels help us get rid of them 00:05:09.17\00:05:11.27 either through, you know some of the natural processes, 00:05:11.31\00:05:14.08 going to the bathroom, breathing out, 00:05:14.11\00:05:15.98 lots of ways that we get rid of waste. 00:05:16.01\00:05:19.41 That's what the cardiovascular system does. 00:05:19.45\00:05:21.48 So blood vessels throughout the body, 00:05:21.52\00:05:23.65 it's a major system, 00:05:23.69\00:05:25.09 and it involves every single organ, 00:05:25.12\00:05:27.72 every single cell of our bodies. 00:05:27.76\00:05:29.72 So that's why it's such an important topic. 00:05:29.76\00:05:32.29 And when the heart goes bad, 00:05:32.33\00:05:33.66 it affects everything in the body. 00:05:33.70\00:05:35.03 Yeah, so cardiovascular disease is a disease 00:05:35.06\00:05:37.50 that encompasses the whole body really, 00:05:37.53\00:05:38.93 anywhere the blood travels through the vessels. 00:05:38.97\00:05:40.44 Right. 00:05:40.47\00:05:41.80 So we want to optimize our blood vessels. 00:05:41.84\00:05:44.34 We want to optimize the pump function 00:05:44.37\00:05:47.21 and also know what to do when we're in trouble. 00:05:47.24\00:05:49.78 Yeah. 00:05:49.81\00:05:51.15 So let's talk about cardiovascular disease. 00:05:51.18\00:05:53.35 We've got an animation here we'd like to share 00:05:53.38\00:05:55.52 and maybe you can talk us through it, Dr. Marcum, 00:05:55.55\00:05:57.02 and kind of tell us what's going on? 00:05:57.05\00:05:58.39 I will do that. 00:05:58.42\00:05:59.75 It's important for us 00:05:59.79\00:06:01.12 to get a feel for this vast topic. 00:06:01.16\00:06:02.89 So if we look, the cardiovascular disease, 00:06:02.92\00:06:05.43 the heart pumps and blood vessels 00:06:05.46\00:06:07.43 throughout the body receive oxygenated blood 00:06:07.46\00:06:10.57 through the arteries, it goes to the legs, 00:06:10.60\00:06:13.00 it goes to the toes, it goes everywhere in the body, 00:06:13.03\00:06:15.60 then it eventually goes to the small capillaries, 00:06:15.64\00:06:18.67 and then the blood 00:06:18.71\00:06:20.28 comes back to the venous system, 00:06:20.31\00:06:22.34 and the veins bring the blood 00:06:22.38\00:06:23.88 from all parts of the body back to the heart. 00:06:23.91\00:06:26.78 The heart then pumps the blood to the lungs, 00:06:26.82\00:06:29.48 and the lungs pump out oxygenated blood 00:06:29.52\00:06:32.09 throughout the body. 00:06:32.12\00:06:33.46 So the right side of the heart pumps to the lungs, 00:06:33.49\00:06:37.36 and the left side pumps to the body. 00:06:37.39\00:06:39.39 And in these blood vessels, 00:06:39.43\00:06:40.96 there are a host of different things, 00:06:41.00\00:06:42.96 the oxygen's in there, hemoglobin, 00:06:43.00\00:06:46.13 which is an iron substance that holds on to that, 00:06:46.17\00:06:49.20 we have all of our nutrients that get through it. 00:06:49.24\00:06:51.37 We have things that clot. 00:06:51.41\00:06:52.91 We have in it our immune system. 00:06:52.94\00:06:54.44 It's also a major transport system. 00:06:54.48\00:06:57.15 So if we think about, you know, the road system in our country, 00:06:57.18\00:07:01.05 for instance, you know, 00:07:01.08\00:07:02.42 it's filled with trucks carrying different things, 00:07:02.45\00:07:04.55 sort of think of our blood vessels, 00:07:04.59\00:07:06.09 as, you know, a transport system 00:07:06.12\00:07:08.62 of bringing good things all throughout the body. 00:07:08.66\00:07:11.79 And if we have a supply chain mess up, okay? 00:07:11.83\00:07:15.26 It's going to affect that organ. 00:07:15.30\00:07:17.27 So blood vessels and the cardiovascular system, 00:07:17.30\00:07:20.04 it's key to having healthy lives. 00:07:20.07\00:07:22.80 And yet, we're finding out it's the number one 00:07:22.84\00:07:25.71 cause of death in America. 00:07:25.74\00:07:27.81 It affects many people. 00:07:27.84\00:07:29.88 Sometimes it's genetics, many times it's lifestyle, 00:07:29.91\00:07:33.08 sometimes it's a combination of both of these factors 00:07:33.11\00:07:36.69 which makes our body get older. 00:07:36.72\00:07:38.19 Yeah. 00:07:38.22\00:07:39.55 Now let's talk about a few specifics, 00:07:39.59\00:07:41.52 when the cardiovascular system is in a disease state. 00:07:41.56\00:07:44.66 What does that mean? 00:07:44.69\00:07:46.03 What is actually occurring in the body? 00:07:46.06\00:07:48.06 Well, this is a good question, Nick, 00:07:48.10\00:07:50.93 because what is actually occurring in the body? 00:07:50.97\00:07:52.67 Well, there's many different 00:07:52.70\00:07:54.04 types of cardiovascular disease. 00:07:54.07\00:07:56.30 There can be problems with cardiac, the heart itself. 00:07:56.34\00:07:59.87 Okay, the heart might be weak, 00:07:59.91\00:08:01.74 the blood vessels that feed the heart its blood, 00:08:01.78\00:08:04.31 they might have problems. 00:08:04.35\00:08:05.68 We call that coronary artery disease. 00:08:05.71\00:08:07.95 We could have problems 00:08:07.98\00:08:09.32 with the heart electrical system. 00:08:09.35\00:08:11.42 We can have problems with the blood vessels. 00:08:11.45\00:08:13.89 We can have problems 00:08:13.92\00:08:15.26 with the clogging of blood vessels 00:08:15.29\00:08:17.79 with fat and lipids, things of that nature. 00:08:17.83\00:08:20.30 So malfunctions of the cardiovascular system 00:08:20.33\00:08:23.13 can occur at either the pump station, 00:08:23.16\00:08:25.73 or the blood vessels themselves. 00:08:25.77\00:08:27.90 And this is important for people to know about this, 00:08:27.94\00:08:31.14 because they want to do everything they can 00:08:31.17\00:08:33.51 to keep the cardiovascular system healthy. 00:08:33.54\00:08:36.24 And we're going to talk about all the things 00:08:36.28\00:08:38.15 we can do to keep them healthy. 00:08:38.18\00:08:40.48 And then you mentioned 00:08:40.52\00:08:41.85 sometimes it's a lifestyle choice 00:08:41.88\00:08:43.22 that causes cardiovascular disease, 00:08:43.25\00:08:44.75 but sometimes it's not lifestyle, 00:08:44.79\00:08:46.25 sometimes it's inherited. 00:08:46.29\00:08:47.62 Talk to us about that a little. 00:08:47.66\00:08:48.99 Yeah, and this is very interesting 00:08:49.02\00:08:50.79 because we all have bad genes, and we all need a savior. 00:08:50.83\00:08:55.16 Now think about this first. 00:08:55.20\00:08:56.53 You can't really choose the genetics you get... 00:08:56.56\00:08:58.13 Right. 00:08:58.17\00:08:59.50 But you can affect the expression of the genes. 00:08:59.53\00:09:02.20 Okay. 00:09:02.24\00:09:03.57 So let's say you have genetic defect. 00:09:03.61\00:09:06.68 And you put stress on that gene, for instance, 00:09:06.71\00:09:08.74 everyone in the Evenson family has bad ears, 00:09:08.78\00:09:12.41 and I yell in your ear all day long. 00:09:12.45\00:09:14.68 Let's not do that. Right. 00:09:14.72\00:09:16.05 Sooner or later that part will wear out 00:09:16.08\00:09:18.12 and you might need a hearing aid. 00:09:18.15\00:09:20.62 Let's say everyone in the Evenson family 00:09:20.66\00:09:23.66 has heart disease at young ages, 00:09:23.69\00:09:25.69 okay, you happen to store fat 00:09:25.73\00:09:27.06 in the arteries or some other problem, 00:09:27.10\00:09:28.90 and you put stress on that system. 00:09:28.93\00:09:31.80 And that stress can be from anywhere, 00:09:31.83\00:09:33.97 okay, it can be from the fatty foods we eat. 00:09:34.00\00:09:36.71 We know that if we eat more than 10 to 15% 00:09:36.74\00:09:39.17 of our food in fat, it can be stored, 00:09:39.21\00:09:41.31 where it's stored 00:09:41.34\00:09:42.68 could be genetically determined, 00:09:42.71\00:09:44.05 can be stored in the arteries, 00:09:44.08\00:09:45.41 get arteries clogged up everywhere, 00:09:45.45\00:09:47.52 and it can be genetically determine, 00:09:47.55\00:09:48.98 which arteries, 00:09:49.02\00:09:50.35 sometimes it's the heart arteries, 00:09:50.39\00:09:51.72 heart attacks, sometimes it's the arteries 00:09:51.75\00:09:53.66 in the neck, and the brain, strokes, 00:09:53.69\00:09:56.62 sometimes it would be arteries that supply the eyes, 00:09:56.66\00:09:59.26 macular degeneration, sometimes the ears, 00:09:59.29\00:10:01.63 we could have hearing problems. 00:10:01.66\00:10:03.23 So these blood vessels can be affected 00:10:03.26\00:10:05.23 anywhere genetically determined. 00:10:05.27\00:10:07.04 So let's say, you put a lot of stress 00:10:07.07\00:10:09.64 on your genetics, 00:10:09.67\00:10:11.01 and over time that the genes just wear out. 00:10:11.04\00:10:13.61 Yeah. 00:10:13.64\00:10:14.98 Then you're going to have an expression, 00:10:15.01\00:10:16.64 you're going to have a symptom. 00:10:16.68\00:10:18.15 And depending on where the malfunction is, 00:10:18.18\00:10:20.48 it might be chest pain, it might be short of breath. 00:10:20.52\00:10:23.22 If it's somewhere else in the body, 00:10:23.25\00:10:24.59 you might have another symptom, 00:10:24.62\00:10:25.95 then you're going to go to the doctor, 00:10:25.99\00:10:27.99 and the doctor is going to go, "Wow, you have a symptom." 00:10:28.02\00:10:30.66 And the doctor is going to say, 00:10:30.69\00:10:32.03 "Well, let's see if we can fix the symptom." 00:10:32.06\00:10:34.96 And if it's a blockage in one of the arteries, 00:10:35.00\00:10:36.97 we can put a stent in it, 00:10:37.00\00:10:38.53 we can bypass around that artery. 00:10:38.57\00:10:40.57 Sometimes medicines can help. 00:10:40.60\00:10:42.50 Sometimes we can thin out the blood if we need it, 00:10:42.54\00:10:45.17 but think about it for a second. 00:10:45.21\00:10:46.57 Does that really get at the cause of disease? 00:10:46.61\00:10:49.74 Not if we're just treating the symptoms. 00:10:49.78\00:10:51.18 No. So you... 00:10:51.21\00:10:52.55 It makes it more tolerable. 00:10:52.58\00:10:53.92 Right. 00:10:53.95\00:10:55.28 So I assume that we all have bad genes. 00:10:55.32\00:10:57.02 I have a patient that came to me 00:10:57.05\00:10:58.62 not too long ago from Chicago 00:10:58.65\00:11:00.92 and he was 57 years of age. 00:11:00.96\00:11:03.56 And he had his heart attack 00:11:03.59\00:11:04.93 and had to have a bypass surgery, 00:11:04.96\00:11:06.53 his arteries were filled with fat. 00:11:06.56\00:11:08.33 He had lots of chest pain, 00:11:08.36\00:11:10.37 we found out his arteries were blocked, he had bypasses 00:11:10.40\00:11:12.77 that bypassed around the blockages, 00:11:12.80\00:11:14.54 so we can feel better and do more, 00:11:14.57\00:11:16.17 so that symptoms were being addressed. 00:11:16.20\00:11:19.01 So he comes to me and he says, "Well, you know, I ate healthy, 00:11:19.04\00:11:22.44 my stress was low. 00:11:22.48\00:11:24.21 I did everything right. 00:11:24.25\00:11:25.71 Why did I have these problems?" 00:11:25.75\00:11:28.65 And the first thing I asked him is, 00:11:28.68\00:11:30.09 "Well, how old was your father or mother 00:11:30.12\00:11:32.65 when they had their heart problem?" 00:11:32.69\00:11:34.02 He said, "Oh, my dad was 32." 00:11:34.06\00:11:36.12 So he got all of these good years of health, 00:11:36.16\00:11:39.69 because he didn't turn on the bad genes. 00:11:39.73\00:11:42.10 So the expression of that 00:11:42.13\00:11:43.67 is we sort of call it epigenetics, 00:11:43.70\00:11:46.37 sort of like the software that affects the hardware. 00:11:46.40\00:11:49.04 Okay. 00:11:49.07\00:11:50.41 So I assume that 00:11:50.44\00:11:51.77 everyone that walks in to see me, 00:11:51.81\00:11:54.44 has some element of cardiovascular disease. 00:11:54.48\00:11:57.18 I assume that you have a little bit. 00:11:57.21\00:11:58.75 Problems with the hardware. Right. 00:11:58.78\00:12:00.12 I assume you have some part, 00:12:00.15\00:12:01.72 now whether it's being expressed or not. 00:12:01.75\00:12:05.25 If you're not having a symptom, you're probably doing okay. 00:12:05.29\00:12:08.22 Now, if you having a symptom, 00:12:08.26\00:12:09.99 you might have it or you might say, 00:12:10.03\00:12:11.59 I'm not sure 00:12:11.63\00:12:12.96 whether I'm having an expression 00:12:12.99\00:12:14.43 of this disease or not. 00:12:14.46\00:12:16.13 So I assume everyone has parts 00:12:16.16\00:12:17.83 that wear out at a certain rate. 00:12:17.87\00:12:19.37 Right. Yeah. 00:12:19.40\00:12:20.74 Now, which part wears out first depends on our genetics, 00:12:20.77\00:12:24.61 and the stress we put on our genetics. 00:12:24.64\00:12:27.08 Unfortunately, our lifestyles, some of the habits we have, 00:12:27.11\00:12:31.41 you know, we know that 00:12:31.45\00:12:32.78 smoking wears out the cardiovascular system, 00:12:32.81\00:12:34.72 we know that diabetes wears out the cardiovascular, 00:12:34.75\00:12:37.32 high blood pressure, too much fat, 00:12:37.35\00:12:39.75 and now we're finding out 00:12:39.79\00:12:41.12 that mental stress can wear it out, 00:12:41.16\00:12:42.99 not getting enough sleep can wear it out, 00:12:43.02\00:12:45.26 and which is the most significant factor 00:12:45.29\00:12:47.36 for you really depends on our genes. 00:12:47.40\00:12:49.80 Now, why do some people smoke never have a problem? 00:12:49.83\00:12:53.00 They got good genes, right? Yeah, they do. 00:12:53.03\00:12:54.54 And some people can eat all the fat they want 00:12:54.57\00:12:56.40 and they never seem to have a problem. 00:12:56.44\00:12:57.77 They got good genes. Right. 00:12:57.81\00:12:59.14 Well, some people like my patient 00:12:59.17\00:13:00.84 that came in at age 57, 00:13:00.88\00:13:02.64 with his bypass had bad genes. 00:13:02.68\00:13:05.21 And that's the place where modern medicine 00:13:05.25\00:13:07.02 can help treat the symptoms. 00:13:07.05\00:13:09.22 Now, sometimes lifestyle changes 00:13:09.25\00:13:10.89 can help prevent the expression of these genes, 00:13:10.92\00:13:13.86 but we all wear out someday. 00:13:13.89\00:13:15.52 And that's why we really have to get back to, 00:13:15.56\00:13:18.23 we all have bad genes, we all need a savior. 00:13:18.26\00:13:20.40 Jesus is the one that heals us in His time. 00:13:20.43\00:13:22.96 So there's a lot going on 00:13:23.00\00:13:24.50 when we're talking cardiovascular disease. 00:13:24.53\00:13:26.40 It could be from a lot of different sources, 00:13:26.43\00:13:28.74 a lot of reasons why we're having it, 00:13:28.77\00:13:30.41 and it could affect a lot of areas of the body. 00:13:30.44\00:13:31.94 Yes, this is a very complex disease. 00:13:31.97\00:13:34.58 And over the years I've practiced, 00:13:34.61\00:13:36.38 the more we uncover these things, 00:13:36.41\00:13:38.81 the more we can add to people's health, 00:13:38.85\00:13:40.72 the more we can tell them what they can do 00:13:40.75\00:13:42.78 and help them have a balanced life. 00:13:42.82\00:13:44.15 That's right. 00:13:44.19\00:13:45.52 Well, I think a lot of people are probably at home 00:13:45.55\00:13:46.92 watching right now are thinking, 00:13:46.96\00:13:48.29 what do I do about it? 00:13:48.32\00:13:49.66 If I have these symptoms, what do I do? 00:13:49.69\00:13:51.03 Well, I will tell you what? 00:13:51.06\00:13:52.39 We're going to talk about that in just a moment, 00:13:52.43\00:13:53.76 so stay with us right here on the Ultimate Prescription. 00:13:53.80\00:13:55.13
