Welcome back to "The Ultimate Prescription" 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 If you're just joining us, we're talking about 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.07 "worship," and more specifically "awesome sights" 00:00:04.10\00:00:06.30 as they can be a way they we can worship. 00:00:06.33\00:00:08.47 Dr. Marcum, you started talking about a study that you 00:00:08.50\00:00:11.47 read about "awesome sights," is that right? 00:00:11.51\00:00:12.84 Yeah, I read a study not too long from California. 00:00:12.87\00:00:15.94 It was the University of California, Berkley, that they 00:00:15.98\00:00:18.95 specifically measured the body's chemistry, the stress 00:00:18.98\00:00:22.15 chemistry on people that saw awesome sights, 00:00:22.18\00:00:25.02 and people that didn't see awesome sights. 00:00:25.05\00:00:27.09 And what kind of awesome sights are we talking about? 00:00:27.12\00:00:28.62 Oh, just things that were amazing - like a sunrise, 00:00:28.66\00:00:31.23 just things that... Waterfalls. 00:00:31.26\00:00:32.69 See a lot of the awesome sight has to depend 00:00:32.73\00:00:35.03 on the person. Sure - what's awesome to you. 00:00:35.06\00:00:37.13 Yeah, I've heard recently that someone said, 00:00:37.17\00:00:39.27 well, an awesome sight to them might be a beautiful castle 00:00:39.30\00:00:42.00 or a sunrise or for me, a walk on the beach. 00:00:42.04\00:00:45.34 But anyway, they created what they considered an awesome 00:00:45.37\00:00:48.01 sight and they measured inflammation 00:00:48.04\00:00:49.94 in the body which is a stress reactant. 00:00:49.98\00:00:52.18 They measured cytokines and they found that people 00:00:52.21\00:00:54.98 that saw awesome sights had less of those stress-releasing 00:00:55.02\00:00:58.15 substances - less stress, better DNA, less mutations, 00:00:58.19\00:01:03.06 less problems! 00:01:03.09\00:01:04.43 So just by having an awesome sight, that was 00:01:04.46\00:01:07.53 a treatment that they could apply to their body. 00:01:07.56\00:01:10.20 So lots of times we think about 00:01:10.23\00:01:12.73 Adam and Eve, the way they worshipped... 00:01:12.77\00:01:14.90 I'm sure they had loads of awesome sights. 00:01:14.94\00:01:17.04 You know, sometimes when I'm with an animal, 00:01:17.07\00:01:19.17 I appreciate that and I say, "Wow, that's an awesome 00:01:19.21\00:01:21.94 animal," and I look at my dogs. 00:01:21.98\00:01:24.11 You know my dogs, Max and Dap, they're the best 00:01:24.15\00:01:26.82 dogs ever and I just love those dogs and I see that God 00:01:26.85\00:01:30.39 created them for something special... 00:01:30.42\00:01:32.09 there's a love that's shared. 00:01:32.12\00:01:33.49 For me, when I see my dogs, that's an awesome sight too. 00:01:33.52\00:01:36.73 Now you might not agree with that - my wife probably 00:01:36.76\00:01:39.66 wouldn't agree with that, but, unfortunately, 00:01:39.69\00:01:42.40 they leave un-awesome sights in the house. 00:01:42.43\00:01:44.83 She does not like that. 00:01:45.77\00:01:47.37 But anyway, this study showed that awesome sights 00:01:47.40\00:01:50.47 were very important and as we think about different ways 00:01:50.51\00:01:53.41 we can incorporate worship into our lives... 00:01:53.44\00:01:55.68 you know, we develop a worship study; 00:01:55.71\00:01:57.58 we have daily worship; we have church; 00:01:57.61\00:01:59.31 we have singing; we have service. 00:01:59.35\00:02:01.35 The point I want to make is there are lots of resources, 00:02:01.38\00:02:03.72 hunt for them - find them, see what works for you. 00:02:03.75\00:02:06.86 Ask God to lead you into special times with Him, 00:02:06.89\00:02:10.56 and He will do that. 00:02:10.59\00:02:11.93 He'll help you find states of worship. 00:02:11.96\00:02:14.30 He'll help you understand how it's benefitting you. 00:02:14.33\00:02:16.93 So I guess we can say that observing an awesome sight 00:02:16.97\00:02:19.70 is worship in that when we see it, if it's a natural scene 00:02:19.73\00:02:23.07 or whatever, when we see it and we credit it to God's glory, 00:02:23.10\00:02:26.24 then that becomes worship. 00:02:26.27\00:02:27.61 Yes it does, and when we appreciate... you know, 00:02:27.64\00:02:29.64 for me sometimes, it's when I'm 00:02:29.68\00:02:31.01 looking at the body - I'm learning something new! 00:02:31.05\00:02:33.15 When I see the DNA and how everything fits together, 00:02:33.18\00:02:36.05 and how things turn on and off, or a new technology 00:02:36.08\00:02:38.79 that God has given us to help. 00:02:38.82\00:02:40.99 That's all amazing! 00:02:41.02\00:02:42.36 For instance, years ago we didn't have glasses; 00:02:42.39\00:02:44.99 we didn't have hearing aids; we didn't have pacemakers; 00:02:45.03\00:02:48.26 we didn't have a lot of things! 00:02:48.30\00:02:50.00 But God has allowed us to use this and we can use this 00:02:50.03\00:02:52.90 to keep our lives working better so we can find His 00:02:52.93\00:02:55.70 will in our life and sometimes our will might be spreading 00:02:55.74\00:02:58.61 the gospel directly; sometimes it might be 00:02:58.64\00:03:01.54 serving our fellow man or loving someone or raising a 00:03:01.58\00:03:04.38 child or reading a book. 00:03:04.41\00:03:05.88 There are many ways that God uses us through worship 00:03:05.91\00:03:08.88 to do His will. 00:03:08.92\00:03:10.25 No matter what it is, it might be a small role, 00:03:10.29\00:03:12.65 it might be a bigger role, but as we live daily, 00:03:12.69\00:03:15.12 one day at a time, we find that we grow in our faith; 00:03:15.16\00:03:18.39 we grow in our worship - that improves our physiology. 00:03:18.43\00:03:21.80 It gives us hope for today and hope for tomorrow. 00:03:21.83\00:03:24.53 That hope, itself - this healing belief 00:03:24.57\00:03:27.70 has chemical benefits as well. 00:03:27.74\00:03:29.70 We call that "healing beliefs, the placebo effect." 00:03:29.74\00:03:32.64 We get all of this - so it's all wrapped up in this. 00:03:32.67\00:03:35.18 I just find it very interesting. 00:03:35.21\00:03:37.11 Now recently, there was an awesome sight that 00:03:37.15\00:03:39.78 happened near where we live and you had given me some 00:03:39.81\00:03:43.65 good encouragement to go witness it, 00:03:43.69\00:03:45.59 and try and make a video of it. 00:03:45.62\00:03:47.26 So the total eclipse happened, and we were near 00:03:47.29\00:03:50.09 the path of totality actually, just 45 minutes up the 00:03:50.13\00:03:52.39 road from where we live. 00:03:52.43\00:03:54.00 There was the path of totality where you would 00:03:54.03\00:03:56.67 see a total solar eclipse. 00:03:56.70\00:03:58.47 And so, we took one of our cameras up there; 00:03:58.50\00:04:00.70 we didn't have quite the proper gear to film it 00:04:00.74\00:04:03.84 the best way possible, but we made do with what we had, 00:04:03.87\00:04:05.97 and we got a short video of the total eclipse... 00:04:06.01\00:04:08.04 So watch this and just have a listen to people's reaction 00:04:08.08\00:04:10.75 to the total solar eclipse... 00:04:10.78\00:04:13.31 Loud noise... WooHoo! Wow! Many people talking, laughing! 00:04:14.02\00:04:22.02 Clapping! WOW! THAT'S AMAZING! 00:04:22.06\00:04:27.40 Many people excited! Loud! Talking! 00:04:27.43\00:04:32.37 Well now, come back! It comes back! Much talking at same time. 00:04:35.90\00:04:41.04 People happy, clapping! Wow! Clapping! 00:04:41.08\00:04:47.42 Whistling! Look at it! 00:04:47.45\00:04:54.46 OH WOW! Yeah! 00:04:56.32\00:05:00.03 Now, I've seen eclipses before, 00:05:00.06\00:05:02.50 not a total solar eclipse like this, but I've seen 00:05:02.53\00:05:05.23 eclipses before and I knew it would be a cool experience. 00:05:05.27\00:05:08.80 But when it happened, I was a little bit overwhelmed... 00:05:08.84\00:05:11.57 it was much more of a powerful 00:05:11.61\00:05:13.88 experience than I thought it would be, just because 00:05:13.91\00:05:16.04 I don't know why - just God's creation and seeing it 00:05:16.08\00:05:19.31 there, it was just kind of overwhelming. 00:05:19.35\00:05:20.75 You could hear the crowd kind of reacted with awe. Yeah. 00:05:20.78\00:05:24.19 So I guess my question to you and my question for our 00:05:24.22\00:05:27.49 viewing audience who just saw this... 00:05:27.52\00:05:29.72 "Would you consider that an awesome sight?" 00:05:29.76\00:05:33.63 Yeah, absolutely! You bet! Okay. 00:05:33.66\00:05:35.73 "Would you consider that awesome sight... 00:05:35.76\00:05:38.43 could it be an act of worship?" Yeah. 00:05:38.47\00:05:41.44 I think when we credit and realize that God is the Creator, 00:05:41.47\00:05:44.87 and He's the One that has made this natural phenomenon, 00:05:44.91\00:05:47.84 you know, that people don't know how to explain... 00:05:47.88\00:05:49.81 Well, it's God's creation to show us, "Hey, look at 00:05:49.84\00:05:53.05 this, I made something neat for you." 00:05:53.08\00:05:54.42 And when we credit Him with it, 00:05:54.45\00:05:55.78 I think that's a great act of worship. 00:05:55.82\00:05:57.15 And do you think, when that happened, your physiology 00:05:57.19\00:06:00.22 changed? 00:06:00.26\00:06:01.59 I suppose so, yeah. 00:06:01.62\00:06:02.96 And for that moment of time, 00:06:02.99\00:06:05.13 did you feel a lot of stress in your body? No. 00:06:05.16\00:06:09.96 So there were chemical changes that happened. Yes 00:06:10.00\00:06:12.93 And just like the study measuring the cytokines 00:06:12.97\00:06:15.70 in those people, there's real chemistry that happens 00:06:15.74\00:06:18.34 in those awesome sights when we worship 00:06:19.01\00:06:21.44 and when we don't worship. 00:06:21.48\00:06:23.08 Now, there's also false worship out there, okay? 00:06:23.11\00:06:27.32 And you can have health benefits from other types 00:06:27.35\00:06:31.25 of worship and we see that quite a bit. 00:06:31.29\00:06:34.59 But I'm very concerned about who has control. 00:06:34.62\00:06:38.49 The battle is in our mind... who controls out mind? 00:06:38.53\00:06:42.53 Because we don't only want health benefits, you know, 00:06:42.56\00:06:46.80 like a lower blood pressure and these things... 00:06:46.84\00:06:48.70 We want eternal benefits and that's from living this 00:06:48.74\00:06:53.11 continual state of worship that walks with God in this. 00:06:53.14\00:06:57.05 So I think that was excellent footage, 00:06:57.08\00:06:59.28 I didn't get to see the total eclipse - I just saw 00:06:59.31\00:07:02.72 a part where I was at, but when I just saw this right then, 00:07:02.75\00:07:05.89 I had goose bumps. 00:07:05.92\00:07:08.06 There was a physiologic change in my body 00:07:08.09\00:07:10.46 when I saw that act of worship. 00:07:10.49\00:07:12.93 I'm saying, today, that when we find ways to worship, 00:07:12.96\00:07:16.63 and we do it consistently, when we feed out brains 00:07:16.67\00:07:20.24 with worship - when it grows the brain, 00:07:20.27\00:07:22.54 there's real physiology that changes. 00:07:22.57\00:07:25.24 It's a very important thing that we do and we have to 00:07:25.27\00:07:28.81 make it an important thing, because here we are 00:07:28.84\00:07:31.18 in front of the God of the universe - we want to do it 00:07:31.21\00:07:33.35 as well as we can - we want Him to train us 00:07:33.38\00:07:36.15 how to do it! That's right. 00:07:36.18\00:07:37.59 And we have to realize that worship has changed 00:07:37.62\00:07:40.06 throughout time. 00:07:40.39\00:07:41.86 It has changed by different age groups. 00:07:41.89\00:07:44.39 It's also changed in different cultures and we have to be 00:07:44.43\00:07:48.06 a little bit flexible about worship. 00:07:48.10\00:07:51.03 For instance, people in the jungles that don't have 00:07:51.07\00:07:54.00 access to everything we do or don't even read and write, 00:07:54.04\00:07:56.50 they might have different ways 00:07:56.54\00:07:58.34 that God reaches them in worship. Yeah. 00:07:58.37\00:08:00.31 Your generation, you know, how are they worshipping nowadays? 00:08:00.34\00:08:03.75 Yeah, it's different from the way my grandparents worshipped. 00:08:03.78\00:08:06.01 Right, it changes over time, you know. 00:08:06.05\00:08:08.22 For instance, I take care of some older people, okay... 00:08:09.58\00:08:13.39 and some of the ways... they can't go to church anymore. 00:08:13.42\00:08:15.62 They can't get out, they don't interact, 00:08:15.66\00:08:17.69 but one of the ways they worship is turning on 00:08:17.73\00:08:19.93 the television and they might see a program on 00:08:19.96\00:08:21.83 "Three Angels Broadcast" that brings them 00:08:21.86\00:08:23.77 into a state of worship. Right, yeah. 00:08:23.80\00:08:25.33 They might hear a song, so that 00:08:25.37\00:08:26.70 might be a way that God uses 00:08:26.74\00:08:28.14 that technology to bring worship to people. That's right. 00:08:28.17\00:08:31.47 Some people might not be able to read and write, 00:08:31.51\00:08:33.27 well God can reach them too. 00:08:33.31\00:08:35.38 You know, some people have all sorts of different ways to 00:08:35.41\00:08:38.48 worship and we have to realize that and try to incorporate 00:08:38.51\00:08:41.28 those in our lives based on asking God to help us. 00:08:41.32\00:08:44.59 Show us how to worship. 00:08:44.65\00:08:46.55 "Create in me a new heart." 00:08:46.59\00:08:48.09 And God, remember that text, "Come unto Me, 00:08:48.12\00:08:51.63 worship Me, all ye that labor and are heavy-laden," 00:08:51.66\00:08:54.73 the stress chemistry that is on our genetics that's causing 00:08:54.76\00:08:58.27 problems and I will give you, it's a gift, I will give you. 00:08:58.30\00:09:01.90 So as we come and ask Him, He is going to give us 00:09:01.94\00:09:04.77 this prescription - I think that's a remarkable thing.
