Welcome back to The Ultimate Prescription. 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 If you're just joining us on today's program, 00:00:02.73\00:00:04.07 we're talking about biblical prescriptions 00:00:04.10\00:00:06.10 for optimizing your brain health. 00:00:06.13\00:00:07.80 And Dr. Marcum, we've talked in the first segment 00:00:07.84\00:00:09.70 about worship as being a key to reducing stress 00:00:09.74\00:00:14.01 and helping us focus and have better brain health. 00:00:14.04\00:00:16.24 But it's a rather complicated field of study. 00:00:16.28\00:00:20.25 I wonder what can you share with us 00:00:20.28\00:00:21.65 maybe some practical tips that people can practice today. 00:00:21.68\00:00:24.79 Yeah, well, I'm gonna give at least three things 00:00:24.82\00:00:27.06 that we can do. 00:00:27.09\00:00:28.42 But the brain is very complex, 00:00:28.46\00:00:30.76 you know, lots of neurons, lots of interconnections, 00:00:30.79\00:00:35.10 lots of things that are stored 00:00:35.13\00:00:36.70 in that part of the brain called the hippocampus, 00:00:36.73\00:00:39.40 lots of inputs of life are all put in the brain, 00:00:39.43\00:00:42.50 whether you realize it or not, Nick, 00:00:42.54\00:00:44.37 those things are going in there doing things. 00:00:44.41\00:00:46.91 And lots of your brains going on, 00:00:46.94\00:00:48.44 and it never comes to our consciousness 00:00:48.48\00:00:50.48 and yet the brain still working on things. 00:00:50.51\00:00:52.41 Yeah. It's very interesting. 00:00:52.45\00:00:53.82 And there's different functional layers 00:00:53.85\00:00:55.28 and very, very fascinating the study, 00:00:55.32\00:00:57.75 and we're learning more as time goes on. 00:00:57.79\00:01:00.39 But, you know, we have PET scans, 00:01:00.42\00:01:02.09 functional MRIs, 00:01:02.12\00:01:03.46 that we can study the metabolism of the brain, 00:01:03.49\00:01:05.76 the growth of the brain, parts getting bigger. 00:01:05.79\00:01:08.56 And not only the brain is a growth part with neurons, 00:01:08.60\00:01:12.30 but it's also electrical. 00:01:12.33\00:01:13.90 You know, there's electrical things 00:01:13.94\00:01:15.27 that are happening in the brain. 00:01:15.30\00:01:16.64 You've heard of people that had seizures, 00:01:16.67\00:01:18.04 the electrical part malformations, 00:01:18.07\00:01:19.61 so there's lots of neurotransmitters 00:01:19.64\00:01:21.91 that are telling the brain what to do, 00:01:21.94\00:01:23.65 like dopamine, and serotonin, and norepinephrine, 00:01:23.68\00:01:27.58 all sorts of different things and all different precursors. 00:01:27.62\00:01:30.02 So this is a very complicated field, 00:01:30.05\00:01:31.99 but you want three things 00:01:32.02\00:01:33.36 people can do to improve their brain health. 00:01:33.39\00:01:34.96 Yeah. Yeah. 00:01:34.99\00:01:37.13 Turn on the proof and we talked about worship, 00:01:37.16\00:01:39.06 and that's where I would always start. 00:01:39.09\00:01:41.26 Teaching people how to worship because God gives us the power. 00:01:41.30\00:01:44.90 He's promised to give us a new brain, 00:01:44.93\00:01:46.53 a new heart if we come to Him. 00:01:46.57\00:01:48.74 So we want that brain that He wants for us. 00:01:48.77\00:01:51.67 We don't want the bad brain 00:01:51.71\00:01:53.04 that the world's creating sometimes 00:01:53.07\00:01:54.68 and we all have bad genes. 00:01:54.71\00:01:56.38 Okay, so there's some brain things 00:01:56.41\00:01:57.75 that we've inherited, 00:01:57.78\00:01:59.11 that we can't do anything with it, 00:01:59.15\00:02:00.48 God has to be the healer for that. 00:02:00.52\00:02:02.62 And I know you've talked before about worship being different. 00:02:02.65\00:02:05.32 It's not always necessarily in a sanctuary, in a church, 00:02:05.35\00:02:07.96 but you worship at home on your own in the mornings, 00:02:07.99\00:02:10.33 you could be on a walk in nature, 00:02:10.36\00:02:11.96 you can be doing music by yourself or with others, 00:02:11.99\00:02:14.30 there's lots of different ways... 00:02:14.33\00:02:15.66 Many ways to have biblical worship, 00:02:15.70\00:02:17.27 you know, sometimes when I'm in the hospital, 00:02:17.30\00:02:18.93 I worship by serving others. 00:02:18.97\00:02:20.97 You know, some people worship by singing, worship by giving. 00:02:21.00\00:02:23.67 There's lots of examples in the Bible 00:02:23.71\00:02:25.31 of people worshipping in different ways, 00:02:25.34\00:02:27.58 but we want to find that special way to worship 00:02:27.61\00:02:30.51 that God connect with us from a biblical viewpoint. 00:02:30.55\00:02:33.72 So that's one thing we can do every day. 00:02:33.75\00:02:35.68 And it doesn't have to be a lot, it can be just, 00:02:35.72\00:02:37.45 you know, some of the studies show this 00:02:37.49\00:02:38.82 little as 10 minutes a day can get this, 00:02:38.85\00:02:41.12 but we have to... 00:02:41.16\00:02:42.49 Just like you eat your food every day 00:02:42.52\00:02:44.66 to improve your physiology every day. 00:02:44.69\00:02:46.76 We really need to worship every day 00:02:46.80\00:02:48.90 to continue to feed the brain 00:02:48.93\00:02:50.90 to grow the good part of the brain, 00:02:50.93\00:02:52.63 to help turn down some of the bad stuff 00:02:52.67\00:02:54.37 that we have going on 00:02:54.40\00:02:55.74 to get God to create in us a new brain 00:02:55.77\00:02:57.47 to help us overcome some of our bad genes. 00:02:57.51\00:02:59.54 Right. So that's one thing, worship. 00:02:59.57\00:03:01.08 Number two, we're not doing this very much 00:03:01.11\00:03:03.24 is that's regular physical activity 00:03:03.28\00:03:05.95 or movement. 00:03:05.98\00:03:07.32 What that does to the brain 00:03:07.35\00:03:08.68 is it improves the blood vessels, 00:03:08.72\00:03:10.99 it helps our brain get more oxygen, 00:03:11.02\00:03:12.95 more than needed tissues, 00:03:12.99\00:03:14.62 more, the tissues are supplied 00:03:14.66\00:03:15.99 with oxygen and food, the nutrients we need. 00:03:16.02\00:03:18.66 It helps us a lot of ways 00:03:18.69\00:03:20.16 when we just exercise 00:03:20.20\00:03:21.53 and, you know, after you've exercised 00:03:21.56\00:03:23.30 you feel a little bit sharper. 00:03:23.33\00:03:24.70 You know, when you get up in the morning and stretch out, 00:03:24.73\00:03:26.40 you feel a little bit sharper. 00:03:26.43\00:03:27.84 Well, the brain is bathed 00:03:27.87\00:03:29.30 in lots of good things when we do that. 00:03:29.34\00:03:32.24 So that's number two. 00:03:32.27\00:03:33.81 We've already talked about 00:03:33.84\00:03:35.18 drinking water and other nutrients, 00:03:35.21\00:03:37.25 but specifically water and things like blueberries, 00:03:37.28\00:03:40.05 antioxidants help the brain health, 00:03:40.08\00:03:42.62 help slow down this aging process. 00:03:42.65\00:03:44.79 And all of our brains get older on different speeds 00:03:44.82\00:03:48.79 based on our genes and our habits. 00:03:48.82\00:03:51.13 So those are three things that people can do, 00:03:51.16\00:03:52.93 worship, do some movement, and work on their nutrition. 00:03:52.96\00:03:56.40 Those are some basic things 00:03:56.43\00:03:57.77 people can do to help take care of the brain. 00:03:57.80\00:04:00.00 Yeah. 00:04:00.04\00:04:01.37 And, viewers, 00:04:01.40\00:04:02.74 if you're interested in finding more, 00:04:02.77\00:04:04.11 Biblical Prescriptions has a lot of other things 00:04:04.14\00:04:06.64 that you can do in there. 00:04:06.68\00:04:08.01 We encourage you to give this call to 3ABN 00:04:08.04\00:04:09.38 and ask for your copy 00:04:09.41\00:04:10.75 of Biblical Prescriptions for Life. 00:04:10.78\00:04:12.11 And, Dr. Marcum, 00:04:12.15\00:04:13.48 we also answer questions 00:04:13.52\00:04:14.85 from viewers that they've submitted here 00:04:14.88\00:04:16.22 and we've got a tough one that we want to tackle next. 00:04:16.25\00:04:18.72 Someone writes in and says, 00:04:18.75\00:04:20.09 "A 43-year-old man 00:04:20.12\00:04:21.79 and he has stage III colon cancer 00:04:21.82\00:04:24.26 and he's discouraged asking 00:04:24.29\00:04:26.16 why is God cursing me?" 00:04:26.19\00:04:27.56 Yeah. 00:04:27.60\00:04:28.93 And that's a great question, 00:04:28.96\00:04:30.67 many people out there are discouraged 00:04:30.70\00:04:33.34 because their health isn't good. 00:04:33.37\00:04:34.70 Yeah. 00:04:34.74\00:04:36.07 You know, and that gets them stressed out 00:04:36.10\00:04:37.61 which turns on the bad parts of the brain 00:04:37.64\00:04:39.84 and it hurts, it hurts them when you had, 00:04:39.87\00:04:41.94 and some people are discouraged and they've lost hope. 00:04:41.98\00:04:45.18 And if you look at the Biblical Prescriptions, 00:04:45.21\00:04:47.82 you know, what, you know, the modern medicine 00:04:47.85\00:04:49.92 has their plan for colon cancer stage III is advanced, 00:04:49.95\00:04:54.86 you know, nutrition can help but this gentleman, 00:04:54.89\00:04:57.76 you know, he feels like God is cursing him. 00:04:57.79\00:05:00.46 Okay, he feels like God is cursing him 00:05:00.50\00:05:02.96 and you know what I'd like to say to him, 00:05:03.00\00:05:04.93 if he's listening or watching 00:05:04.97\00:05:06.53 and I've already written him an email going over this, 00:05:06.57\00:05:09.60 Nick, and it came to the website 00:05:09.64\00:05:11.24 and I said, you know what? 00:05:11.27\00:05:12.87 Sometimes God uses our physical illness 00:05:12.91\00:05:16.88 to heal us. 00:05:16.91\00:05:18.25 He allows it to happen. 00:05:18.28\00:05:19.95 You know, He allows us to be sick for a reason. 00:05:19.98\00:05:22.48 We might not understand that reason 00:05:22.52\00:05:24.22 'cause we're not God. 00:05:24.25\00:05:25.75 Okay, well, what if this, 00:05:25.79\00:05:27.66 this illness caused him to come to God 00:05:27.69\00:05:30.09 in a greater way than he's ever had before. 00:05:30.13\00:05:32.99 And to give him peace 00:05:33.03\00:05:34.36 and to really help him come into that relationship 00:05:34.40\00:05:36.93 that would heal him for eternity. 00:05:36.97\00:05:38.67 What if that's happening here? 00:05:38.70\00:05:40.07 We don't know, we're not God. 00:05:40.10\00:05:42.34 What if God is using this illness 00:05:42.37\00:05:44.07 for him to turn into a ministry? 00:05:44.11\00:05:46.17 Where he says, you know, 00:05:46.21\00:05:47.54 well, through this illness, I've got closer to God. 00:05:47.58\00:05:50.15 And guess what? 00:05:50.18\00:05:51.51 My family and loved ones have come to understand 00:05:51.55\00:05:54.02 how important this relationship was 00:05:54.05\00:05:55.58 for eternity. 00:05:55.62\00:05:56.95 What if God's using this illness for that? 00:05:56.99\00:05:59.29 So sometimes God can use illness 00:05:59.32\00:06:01.32 to turn into a ministry. 00:06:01.36\00:06:03.12 Now we all have bad genes. 00:06:03.16\00:06:04.56 Maybe he just had some bad genes. 00:06:04.59\00:06:05.93 Yeah. 00:06:05.96\00:06:07.30 You know, I think about in the Old Testament, 00:06:07.33\00:06:09.16 all the lepers that they had, 00:06:09.20\00:06:10.67 you know, they were thought that was a curse, 00:06:10.70\00:06:14.67 they weren't an outcast to society. 00:06:14.70\00:06:17.31 Well, now we're finding out that 00:06:17.34\00:06:18.67 that was just an infectious disease 00:06:18.71\00:06:20.04 that they had. 00:06:20.08\00:06:21.41 Yeah. They weren't outcast. 00:06:21.44\00:06:22.78 And I think Christ showed them that they weren't outcast, 00:06:22.81\00:06:26.11 'cause He came to the lepers and healed them, 00:06:26.15\00:06:29.22 you know, but it wasn't only a physical healing, 00:06:29.25\00:06:31.82 it was also a spiritual healing. 00:06:31.85\00:06:34.02 You know, He wanted them to know 00:06:34.06\00:06:35.39 they weren't outcasts of the society. 00:06:35.42\00:06:36.99 He wanted to offer them more. 00:06:37.03\00:06:38.36 And if you were living in that time, 00:06:38.39\00:06:40.50 you know, the lepers were unclean, 00:06:40.53\00:06:42.26 you know, you didn't even come within a near leper. 00:06:42.30\00:06:44.53 And that here Christ not only came 00:06:44.57\00:06:46.20 and healed them their physical 00:06:46.23\00:06:47.60 but offered them something spiritually, eternally. 00:06:47.64\00:06:51.24 So all of those out there with chronic diseases 00:06:51.27\00:06:54.18 and chronic pain and things like cancer, 00:06:54.21\00:06:57.01 I mean, the place to turn for some of the answers 00:06:57.05\00:06:59.71 is to relationship with God again, 00:06:59.75\00:07:02.08 you know, let him sort of lead you through this. 00:07:02.12\00:07:03.95 And, you know, 00:07:03.99\00:07:05.32 maybe you might not understand the reason why. 00:07:05.35\00:07:07.39 But God allows these things to happen for reasons 00:07:07.42\00:07:10.06 that we might not ever understand. 00:07:10.09\00:07:11.69 And it's not only now, 00:07:11.73\00:07:13.50 but it's happened throughout time. 00:07:13.53\00:07:15.23 You know, bad things happen to people, 00:07:15.26\00:07:17.30 and we don't never understand the purpose. 00:07:17.33\00:07:19.87 But when I tell them, 00:07:19.90\00:07:21.27 when I have someone come to the office like this, 00:07:21.30\00:07:23.14 I said, no, you know, God's not cursing you. 00:07:23.17\00:07:26.68 You know, there's more to life than our physical eyes. 00:07:26.71\00:07:30.28 There's eternal healing. 00:07:30.31\00:07:31.75 And if this accomplishes eternal healing, 00:07:31.78\00:07:34.45 or help someone else become eternally healed, 00:07:34.48\00:07:37.59 then it's a blessing that we can't even understand. 00:07:37.62\00:07:40.69 And yet we, 00:07:40.72\00:07:42.12 you know, we had the sanctity of physical life 00:07:42.16\00:07:44.63 we hold on to that so much, 00:07:44.66\00:07:46.43 it almost becomes, 00:07:46.46\00:07:47.80 we're selfish with our own lives. 00:07:47.83\00:07:49.73 But is our life really ours, Nick? 00:07:49.76\00:07:51.90 No. 00:07:51.93\00:07:53.27 No, it's a gift 00:07:53.30\00:07:54.80 that was given for God for a purpose. 00:07:54.84\00:07:56.94 Yeah. For His will and not our will. 00:07:56.97\00:07:59.14 Yeah. 00:07:59.17\00:08:00.51 You know, and if His will is this 00:08:00.54\00:08:01.88 and we're walking with Him, we accept it. 00:08:01.91\00:08:04.68 You know, we try to understand, 00:08:04.71\00:08:06.78 we say, God, I don't understand why. 00:08:06.82\00:08:08.62 But I trust You that You know what's best. 00:08:08.65\00:08:10.92 You're in my heart. 00:08:10.95\00:08:12.29 I know where it's going to end up. 00:08:12.32\00:08:14.06 And if I look back in the scriptures, 00:08:14.09\00:08:15.72 I see all these young men that died young, 00:08:15.76\00:08:19.53 you know, they saw an eternal picture 00:08:19.56\00:08:22.23 that sometimes the world doesn't allow us to see, 00:08:22.26\00:08:25.40 we see this selfish picture. 00:08:25.43\00:08:27.70 The selfishness that we have turns on the part of our brain 00:08:27.74\00:08:31.11 that we share with animals, 00:08:31.14\00:08:32.87 then all of a sudden, we just want to stay alive. 00:08:32.91\00:08:35.51 You know, the prefrontal cortex, 00:08:35.54\00:08:37.01 that's a loving part of the brain 00:08:37.05\00:08:38.38 that we want to develop through worship 00:08:38.41\00:08:40.12 and these other things, 00:08:40.15\00:08:41.48 that's the part that helps us see the big picture in life 00:08:41.52\00:08:44.52 and that's the part that God wants to create a new. 00:08:44.55\00:08:47.22 So I sort of had this discussion 00:08:47.26\00:08:48.99 on the internet with this person 00:08:49.02\00:08:50.89 and I said, you know, God's not cursing you, 00:08:50.93\00:08:53.56 maybe there's a reason 00:08:53.60\00:08:54.93 you know, and let's live one day at a time. 00:08:54.96\00:08:57.33 Let's not worry about the, 00:08:57.37\00:08:58.83 you know, the past. 00:08:58.87\00:09:00.20 Let's just go today 00:09:00.24\00:09:01.57 and let God lead you today into His will 00:09:01.60\00:09:04.37 one day at a time, 00:09:04.41\00:09:05.74 and maybe we can find some lifestyle changes 00:09:05.77\00:09:07.98 that can help us. 00:09:08.01\00:09:09.34 Maybe a miracle will happen. 00:09:09.38\00:09:10.71 Sometimes you'll see miracles, we don't know. 00:09:10.75\00:09:12.55 But we're just gonna trust Him with their lives. 00:09:12.58\00:09:14.22 Yeah. 00:09:14.25\00:09:15.58 You know, we got time for just one more quick question. 00:09:15.62\00:09:17.29 Yeah. 00:09:17.32\00:09:18.65 And I can relate to this one a lot. 00:09:18.69\00:09:20.02 Someone writes in and asked 00:09:20.06\00:09:21.39 who should take a medication for sleep. 00:09:21.42\00:09:22.76 That's kind of related to the brain 00:09:22.79\00:09:24.33 for me, 'cause I sit in bed sometimes at night, 00:09:24.36\00:09:26.06 and I'm just processing things, and thinking about things, 00:09:26.09\00:09:28.10 and I just, I can't go to sleep 'cause I'm thinking, 00:09:28.13\00:09:31.17 is medication appropriate for that? 00:09:31.20\00:09:32.77 Well, why this is important question is, 00:09:32.80\00:09:35.44 you know, if you look back, 00:09:35.47\00:09:36.81 we want to understand the reason why. 00:09:36.84\00:09:39.67 Okay. Rest is important. 00:09:39.71\00:09:41.48 You know, if you broke your arm, 00:09:41.51\00:09:42.84 you'd rest your arm, you wouldn't keep throwing it. 00:09:42.88\00:09:44.71 Right. The brain needs downtime. 00:09:44.75\00:09:48.35 Years ago, when it got dark, 00:09:48.38\00:09:50.39 we turned everything off and went to sleep. 00:09:50.42\00:09:52.12 The brain had more downtime. 00:09:52.15\00:09:54.06 We have so much stimulation today, 00:09:54.09\00:09:55.69 the brain is revved up, 00:09:55.72\00:09:57.06 both the stress part of the brain mainly 00:09:57.09\00:09:59.39 and the parts that we don't need to be activating. 00:09:59.43\00:10:01.50 And we need to turn that off. 00:10:01.53\00:10:03.47 So when you can't sleep at night, 00:10:03.50\00:10:05.23 the brain can't rest. 00:10:05.27\00:10:06.60 So lots of things physiologically happened, 00:10:06.63\00:10:08.60 you accelerate aging, like we've talked about. 00:10:08.64\00:10:10.67 Right. 00:10:10.71\00:10:12.04 The genes, the bad genes get older quicker. 00:10:12.07\00:10:13.84 The good genes get older too. 00:10:13.88\00:10:15.28 So what can a person do? 00:10:15.31\00:10:16.64 We'll find out the reason why. 00:10:16.68\00:10:18.38 Some of the reasons might be too much stimulus, 00:10:18.41\00:10:20.55 turn off the TV at night, turn off your cell phones, 00:10:20.58\00:10:22.85 that might be it. 00:10:22.88\00:10:24.22 It might be you're eating big at night, 00:10:24.25\00:10:25.75 you have other stimulants in your body. 00:10:25.79\00:10:27.72 That might be it. 00:10:27.76\00:10:29.09 Might be that you're not exercising, 00:10:29.12\00:10:30.63 you're not getting tired. 00:10:30.66\00:10:32.23 But I've had several people that when they come to me, 00:10:32.26\00:10:34.66 I wouldn't start with a sleeping pill. 00:10:34.70\00:10:36.60 Okay, there's rare cases that need it, 00:10:36.63\00:10:38.63 but they're on the rare side. 00:10:38.67\00:10:40.34 But I try to get them to understand the why 00:10:40.37\00:10:42.84 and sleep physiology, Nick, is very complex. 00:10:42.87\00:10:45.91 Sometimes it can be when you're quiet at night, 00:10:45.94\00:10:48.41 your brain just never shuts off. 00:10:48.44\00:10:50.05 When you watch the news, 00:10:50.08\00:10:51.45 it makes more adrenaline and cortisol, 00:10:51.48\00:10:53.88 those are things that want the body 00:10:53.92\00:10:55.25 to get ready to fight and stay alive. 00:10:55.28\00:10:56.79 We want to turn down 00:10:56.82\00:10:58.15 all the stressor part of the brain. 00:10:58.19\00:10:59.62 So I'd say one of the good things 00:10:59.65\00:11:01.19 we can do is turn off the stress 00:11:01.22\00:11:03.22 and turn on more worship at night. 00:11:03.26\00:11:05.29 Come to God in prayer 00:11:05.33\00:11:06.66 and ask Him to sort of lead you through these things. 00:11:06.70\00:11:08.96 That would probably be a place where I would start 00:11:09.00\00:11:11.53 rather than jumping on a pill 00:11:11.57\00:11:13.17 that doesn't solve a problem 00:11:13.20\00:11:15.14 and might create some new problems, 00:11:15.17\00:11:17.21 even though in rare instances, 00:11:17.24\00:11:18.67 it might be beneficial in the short term. 00:11:18.71\00:11:21.11 Yeah, I'm going to start employing some of those tips. 00:11:21.14\00:11:24.08 I think it'll be very helpful.
