00:02:20.57\00:02:21.97 That's exactly right. 00:02:22.00\00:02:23.34 And we go through biblical prescriptions, 00:02:23.37\00:02:24.94 why we're sick. 00:02:24.97\00:02:26.34 We come from the basic biblical prescriptions 00:02:26.37\00:02:28.48 that some people take for granted like moving, 00:02:28.51\00:02:31.18 being outside, 00:02:31.21\00:02:32.58 but one of the most important chapters 00:02:32.61\00:02:34.52 that we have is on mental health, 00:02:34.55\00:02:37.15 treating the brain right, 00:02:37.19\00:02:38.69 because what goes into the brain 00:02:38.72\00:02:40.36 affects the entire physiology. 00:02:40.39\00:02:42.59 You know, the brain is made of three functional layers, 00:02:42.62\00:02:45.93 the top part, the prefrontal cortex, 00:02:45.96\00:02:48.13 which we communicate with God and each other, 00:02:48.16\00:02:50.40 empathy, advanced thoughts, knowledge, abstract thinking, 00:02:50.43\00:02:54.74 the parts of the brain that deal with emotions, 00:02:54.77\00:02:56.81 and then the part that we share with animals 00:02:56.84\00:02:58.61 that just basically keeps us alive. 00:02:58.64\00:03:00.74 And this helps people 00:03:00.78\00:03:02.11 understand the brain a little bit better 00:03:02.14\00:03:03.85 and how important it is to our physiology. 00:03:03.88\00:03:05.95 Yeah. 00:03:05.98\00:03:07.32 And if you like to get a hold of that, 00:03:07.35\00:03:08.68 we encourage you to contact 3ABN, 00:03:08.72\00:03:10.05 it's available through their bookstore. 00:03:10.09\00:03:11.52 So Biblical Prescriptions for Life, it's seven-weeks 00:03:11.55\00:03:14.32 and we think that will be a great resource for you 00:03:14.36\00:03:16.22 to share with your friends. 00:03:16.26\00:03:17.96 Yeah, in part of that study, 00:03:17.99\00:03:20.26 I interview, I had a patient that came in 00:03:20.30\00:03:22.43 that had a lot of brain problems 00:03:22.46\00:03:24.80 and the solution to or that started 00:03:24.83\00:03:26.60 in her health care prescription was to deal with the brain. 00:03:26.63\00:03:29.90 Awesome. 00:03:29.94\00:03:31.27 Well, you know, let's take a look at that clip now, 00:03:31.31\00:03:32.81 The Biblical Prescriptions for Life, Chapter 6, 00:03:32.84\00:03:35.24 section on brain health. 00:03:35.28\00:03:39.55 Jane was distraught, 00:03:39.58\00:03:42.55 she found her husband of 11 years with another woman. 00:03:42.58\00:03:46.35 Not only was she working a 40-hour work week, 00:03:46.39\00:03:49.62 but she was taking care of her three children. 00:03:49.66\00:03:52.66 She and her husband had not communicated 00:03:52.69\00:03:54.83 in some time. 00:03:54.86\00:03:56.26 She was hurt, ashamed, confused, and scared. 00:03:56.30\00:04:01.57 All of these emotions were causing her brain 00:04:01.60\00:04:04.34 to be overloaded. 00:04:04.37\00:04:06.64 She came to me for some advice 00:04:06.68\00:04:08.14 and I believe the greatest value 00:04:08.18\00:04:09.71 I had was in mere listening. 00:04:09.74\00:04:12.85 Where do you start when your world is upside down? 00:04:12.88\00:04:16.22 The brain is on overload 00:04:16.25\00:04:17.95 and you cannot even concentrate, 00:04:17.99\00:04:19.69 nevertheless eat, do good job at work, 00:04:19.72\00:04:22.29 or even raise your children. 00:04:22.32\00:04:24.63 Many of you watching this have had similar experiences. 00:04:24.66\00:04:29.36 These situations are so complicated 00:04:29.40\00:04:32.37 and yet this is life. 00:04:32.40\00:04:34.74 As we've been studying together, 00:04:34.77\00:04:36.10 I hope the first place 00:04:36.14\00:04:37.47 we've all learned to turn for help for clarity for hope 00:04:37.51\00:04:41.41 for some sense of normalcy is our great physician, 00:04:41.44\00:04:45.71 for "I can do all things 00:04:45.75\00:04:47.98 in Christ which strengtheneth me." 00:04:48.02\00:04:50.79 Notice, 00:04:50.82\00:04:52.15 this biblical prescription does not say some things 00:04:52.19\00:04:55.42 but all things but only through Christ. 00:04:55.46\00:04:59.56 I asked Jane, if she done this, and she done this, 00:04:59.59\00:05:02.00 but she was not seeming to hear God's voice 00:05:02.03\00:05:05.60 or feel His comfort. 00:05:05.63\00:05:07.84 I began to talk to Jane about 00:05:07.87\00:05:09.47 what her brain was going through the tremendous stress. 00:05:09.50\00:05:12.74 How I turned on the emotional system of the brain 00:05:12.77\00:05:15.58 which is the limbic system. 00:05:15.61\00:05:17.18 And her alarm system, 00:05:17.21\00:05:18.55 the amygdala was doing its job preparing the body to survive. 00:05:18.58\00:05:22.88 The fight or flight system was in full gear, 00:05:22.92\00:05:25.45 but this constant bombardment of chemical 00:05:25.49\00:05:28.32 was not helping the situation. 00:05:28.36\00:05:31.09 The adrenaline, the cortisol, the cytokines, 00:05:31.13\00:05:33.76 inflammatory proteins were speeding up her heart, 00:05:33.80\00:05:36.70 raising the blood pressure, causing her to lose sleep. 00:05:36.73\00:05:40.34 She was not hungry. 00:05:40.37\00:05:41.70 But the most significant problem 00:05:41.74\00:05:43.07 that I saw was she could not think rationally. 00:05:43.10\00:05:47.01 When the stress chemistry is on, 00:05:47.04\00:05:48.88 the brain just wants to be safe to stay alive. 00:05:48.91\00:05:52.91 The body lives in the here and now in that situation 00:05:52.95\00:05:56.38 and not in the future. 00:05:56.42\00:05:57.95 The higher functioning parts of the brain, 00:05:57.99\00:06:00.09 the prefrontal cortex is blunted 00:06:00.12\00:06:02.42 as a body just wants to stay alive and feel well. 00:06:02.46\00:06:06.03 I explained to Jane that God was there ready to help, 00:06:06.06\00:06:09.53 but we needed her to use the prefrontal cortex. 00:06:09.56\00:06:13.50 But what does one do when our world is crumbling 00:06:13.54\00:06:17.21 from a broken relationship, 00:06:17.24\00:06:19.11 an illness, a death, loss of a job, 00:06:19.14\00:06:22.41 or shaken belief system? 00:06:22.44\00:06:24.61 What do we need to do 00:06:24.65\00:06:25.98 when we are so shaken that the part of the brain 00:06:26.01\00:06:27.92 we need most is not working? 00:06:27.95\00:06:31.49 How does God create in us a new brain? 00:06:31.52\00:06:35.29 What did he do in the past? 00:06:35.32\00:06:37.09 What are the practical steps 00:06:37.13\00:06:38.83 we can take if and when this happens to us? 00:06:38.86\00:06:42.23 Hopefully by the end of this week, 00:06:42.26\00:06:43.90 you'll have a prescription, a strategy, a plan, 00:06:43.93\00:06:47.34 a software program uploaded to help us 00:06:47.37\00:06:50.64 as well as those we hold so dear. 00:06:50.67\00:06:53.48 We have a lot to cover this week. 00:06:53.51\00:06:55.88 So let's start by thanking and praising God 00:06:55.91\00:06:58.18 and then ask Him for the help and clarity 00:06:58.21\00:07:00.68 as we learn and study together. 00:07:00.72\00:07:03.75 You know, Dr. Marcum, it's a tragic story. 00:07:03.79\00:07:05.25 There's a lot of stress that people are under these days. 00:07:05.29\00:07:08.06 I wonder do you have an update. 00:07:08.09\00:07:09.42 Does this end well for her? Yes. 00:07:09.46\00:07:11.19 Jane is making progress. 00:07:11.23\00:07:12.89 But like any chronic condition, 00:07:12.93\00:07:15.36 she had to take one step at a time. 00:07:15.40\00:07:19.07 And, you know, when talking about brain health today, 00:07:19.10\00:07:21.64 we can't cover every detail that's out there. 00:07:21.67\00:07:24.81 It's too complex. 00:07:24.84\00:07:26.37 But we can let people know 00:07:26.41\00:07:28.21 that the brain is an important part to health. 00:07:28.24\00:07:31.55 And if the brain is not working well, 00:07:31.58\00:07:33.68 nothing else works well. 00:07:33.72\00:07:35.65 If the brain doesn't work well, 00:07:35.68\00:07:37.02 it puts stress on the body like Jane. 00:07:37.05\00:07:38.72 In fact, Jane had so much stress on her body 00:07:38.75\00:07:42.06 that she couldn't think rationally. 00:07:42.09\00:07:43.76 You know, she had so much problems going on 00:07:43.79\00:07:45.53 and sometimes even when even she tried to worship, 00:07:45.56\00:07:48.20 there was so much stress on her body 00:07:48.23\00:07:51.17 that she couldn't even worship. 00:07:51.20\00:07:52.63 She couldn't even, she felt like 00:07:52.67\00:07:54.00 she wasn't hearing God's voice 00:07:54.04\00:07:55.37 even though God was there working in her life. 00:07:55.40\00:07:57.71 She felt like she couldn't do. 00:07:57.74\00:07:59.07 There's some out there that might feel this way too, 00:07:59.11\00:08:01.21 you might be under so much stress, 00:08:01.24\00:08:03.35 so much brain problems 00:08:03.38\00:08:05.01 that your prefrontal cortex is not working as well, 00:08:05.05\00:08:08.32 the stress part of the brain that stay alive, 00:08:08.35\00:08:10.55 the part that we turn on that deal with pain. 00:08:10.59\00:08:12.72 You know, 00:08:12.75\00:08:14.09 when animals have pain that they move away from that. 00:08:14.12\00:08:16.19 When people have pain, they have to do something 00:08:16.22\00:08:18.26 to deal with the pain they're under. 00:08:18.29\00:08:19.96 Right. 00:08:20.00\00:08:21.33 You know, they have to deal with it. 00:08:21.36\00:08:22.70 And Jane was reaching for the wrong things 00:08:22.73\00:08:25.00 to deal with pain. 00:08:25.03\00:08:26.70 And so we had to start all over in her brain health 00:08:26.74\00:08:29.67 and teach her the right things to do. 00:08:29.70\00:08:31.77 Well, what's the first steps in the brain health? 00:08:31.81\00:08:34.81 What's the first biblical prescription? 00:08:34.84\00:08:37.81 And in Chapter 6 of Biblical Prescriptions for Life, 00:08:37.85\00:08:40.32 we go through that in a more detail, 00:08:40.35\00:08:42.82 but this is very complex physiology. 00:08:42.85\00:08:45.75 But how can you eat right 00:08:45.79\00:08:47.46 if your brain doesn't work right? 00:08:47.49\00:08:49.12 How can you sleep well 00:08:49.16\00:08:50.56 if your brain doesn't work right? 00:08:50.59\00:08:52.33 How can you make good decisions regarding your health care 00:08:52.36\00:08:55.23 if your brain doesn't work? 00:08:55.26\00:08:56.60 How can you even follow a doctor's appointment? 00:08:56.63\00:08:59.00 So when I first started working with Jane, Nick, 00:08:59.03\00:09:02.17 it was hard to even communicate with her 00:09:02.20\00:09:04.54 because, you know, 00:09:04.57\00:09:05.91 when we were in the room together, 00:09:05.94\00:09:08.01 you felt super stressed, she was stressed. 00:09:08.04\00:09:11.11 And, you know, when you feel stressed, 00:09:11.15\00:09:12.91 when someone's in the room with you, 00:09:12.95\00:09:14.28 you know that something's not right. 00:09:14.32\00:09:15.78 Yeah. 00:09:15.82\00:09:17.15 And I wanted to help her understand peace. 00:09:17.19\00:09:20.22 And so we went through biblical prescriptions, 00:09:20.26\00:09:22.99 and the very first one 00:09:23.02\00:09:24.53 we did is we had to calm down her physiology, 00:09:24.56\00:09:27.93 so in worship, so she would know about God. 00:09:27.96\00:09:30.97 So we taught her how to do worship warm ups. 00:09:31.00\00:09:33.90 Okay. 00:09:33.94\00:09:35.27 How to warm up to worship, 00:09:35.30\00:09:36.64 so she could turn down the stress in her brain, 00:09:36.67\00:09:38.71 she could worship better. 00:09:38.74\00:09:40.14 So what does that mean? 00:09:40.18\00:09:41.51 Well, I mean, you know, 00:09:41.54\00:09:42.88 in the morning, you get ready for breakfast, 00:09:42.91\00:09:45.51 there's certain things you do. 00:09:45.55\00:09:46.92 You get ready for work, and you put on your clothes, 00:09:46.95\00:09:49.28 and you get cleaned up, 00:09:49.32\00:09:50.65 you prepare yourself to go to work. 00:09:50.69\00:09:52.05 Sure. Yeah. 00:09:52.09\00:09:53.42 Well, the most important thing 00:09:53.46\00:09:54.89 that I do every day is my worship. 00:09:54.92\00:09:56.93 Mm-hmm. 00:09:56.96\00:09:58.29 So I want to prepare for worship, 00:09:58.33\00:10:00.00 just like I would prepare 00:10:00.03\00:10:01.36 for any other important activity. 00:10:01.40\00:10:03.63 So I went through some of the physiology of, 00:10:03.67\00:10:05.63 how do we get our brains prepared to meet our God? 00:10:05.67\00:10:11.07 You know, how do we do that? 00:10:11.11\00:10:12.44 And we went through the steps 00:10:12.47\00:10:13.81 and we don't have enough time to go through all of them, 00:10:13.84\00:10:15.81 but we try to activate the prefrontal cortex. 00:10:15.84\00:10:18.38 Right. 00:10:18.41\00:10:19.75 We try to turn down stress, 00:10:19.78\00:10:21.12 whether it be from deep breathing, 00:10:21.15\00:10:22.48 or stretching, or saying a prayer 00:10:22.52\00:10:25.12 where we invite the Holy Spirit to come into our lives. 00:10:25.15\00:10:28.29 And when the Holy Spirit is there, 00:10:28.32\00:10:30.03 and God as Christ is making us our worship acceptable, 00:10:30.06\00:10:34.60 you know, remember, make my worship acceptable, 00:10:34.63\00:10:37.47 then things start to happen. 00:10:37.50\00:10:38.83 And, you know, she said, you know, I need a new brain. 00:10:38.87\00:10:41.10 And she realized that she couldn't do it on her own. 00:10:41.14\00:10:43.71 And as she... 00:10:43.74\00:10:45.07 The Holy Spirit was working in her, 00:10:45.11\00:10:46.57 things started to improve one step at a time. 00:10:46.61\00:10:50.11 And then as her brain, 00:10:50.15\00:10:51.48 as she fed her brain through worship, 00:10:51.51\00:10:52.95 the brain started growing, 00:10:52.98\00:10:54.48 turned down some of the stress then she started, 00:10:54.52\00:10:56.89 God was there all along, God never left her. 00:10:56.92\00:10:58.79 Yeah, absolutely. 00:10:58.82\00:11:00.16 She just didn't have that comfort. 00:11:00.19\00:11:02.56 But as time has grown on, 00:11:02.59\00:11:03.93 her worship has helped her brain 00:11:03.96\00:11:05.76 turned down some of the stress chemistry, 00:11:05.79\00:11:07.93 she started to make some lifestyle changes, 00:11:07.96\00:11:10.37 things started to come together for Jane, okay. 00:11:10.40\00:11:13.60 And she realized that none of us are perfect. 00:11:13.64\00:11:16.17 We all have bad genes. 00:11:16.20\00:11:17.94 We all have bad genes in our brains. 00:11:17.97\00:11:19.61 We have bad genes at other places. 00:11:19.64\00:11:22.04 And we all need a Savior, okay. 00:11:22.08\00:11:24.65 And when she started realizing that the real solution, 00:11:24.68\00:11:27.25 the real biblical prescription 00:11:27.28\00:11:28.62 was to start in worship for her health, 00:11:28.65\00:11:30.89 and that would lead her to other things 00:11:30.92\00:11:32.69 that would improve her brain function, 00:11:32.72\00:11:34.66 whether it be drinking more fluids, 00:11:34.69\00:11:36.49 or maybe taking antioxidants, 00:11:36.52\00:11:38.79 or maybe eating some nuts and berries 00:11:38.83\00:11:40.83 and things that help maybe exercise, 00:11:40.86\00:11:43.03 treating these other medical problems. 00:11:43.06\00:11:44.77 As she started in the right place, 00:11:44.80\00:11:46.94 things started to come together, 00:11:46.97\00:11:48.50 even though the world shouted, 00:11:48.54\00:11:49.87 no, this is not where you need to go, 00:11:49.90\00:11:51.77 you know, some of the other places 00:11:51.81\00:11:53.21 they wanted to start with pills. 00:11:53.24\00:11:55.24 Well, I said, well, some people have genetic needs for that. 00:11:55.28\00:11:58.51 But that's not where you want to start as a source of truth. 00:11:58.55\00:12:01.62 Let's try this first and see if this doesn't improve. 00:12:01.65\00:12:04.82 So the brain is very complicated. 00:12:04.85\00:12:06.69 But for our audience today, 00:12:06.72\00:12:08.32 the main point I wanna give you is pay attention to your brain. 00:12:08.36\00:12:12.09 Okay, pay attention to your brain, 00:12:12.13\00:12:14.43 get it working optimally. 00:12:14.46\00:12:15.96 Do things to help take care of your brain. 00:12:16.00\00:12:18.23 And one of the biggest things that I want to emphasize 00:12:18.27\00:12:20.67 in taking care of your brain is the act of worship. 00:12:20.70\00:12:24.01 You know, God wants to create 00:12:24.04\00:12:25.37 a new heart, a new brain. 00:12:25.41\00:12:27.51 And when you come into worship, physiologic things that happen, 00:12:27.54\00:12:31.61 when you invite the Holy Spirit is that it works continuously. 00:12:31.65\00:12:34.48 When you invite God into your heart, 00:12:34.52\00:12:36.28 it goes, you know, the memories 00:12:36.32\00:12:37.65 and this goes into the part of the brain 00:12:37.69\00:12:39.02 that stores memories. 00:12:39.05\00:12:40.39 It's working all day long. 00:12:40.42\00:12:41.79 And when you have a text 00:12:41.82\00:12:43.16 or something to go over our prayer, 00:12:43.19\00:12:44.99 you can keep worship going, 00:12:45.03\00:12:46.83 even if you're not conscious of it 00:12:46.86\00:12:48.56 throughout the day. 00:12:48.60\00:12:49.93 It's where you turn over your brain to 00:12:49.96\00:12:51.57 and the brain health is, 00:12:51.60\00:12:52.93 that's one of the keys to keeping people on track. 00:12:52.97\00:12:55.87 I guess the verse coming to me, 00:12:55.90\00:12:57.24 "All you who are burdened heavy laden 00:12:57.27\00:12:58.94 and I will give you rest," 00:12:58.97\00:13:00.31 that really becomes really a mindset 00:13:00.34\00:13:03.04 when you're worshiping rather than a mindset 00:13:03.08\00:13:04.65 of being stressed and worried all the time. 00:13:04.68\00:13:06.95 When you come into worship with Jesus, 00:13:06.98\00:13:08.68 you have rest in peace. 00:13:08.72\00:13:10.05 And it's truly a gift and there's nothing we can do. 00:13:10.09\00:13:12.65 We have to accept that gift. 00:13:12.69\00:13:14.12 We have to know where to get it. 00:13:14.16\00:13:15.49 We have to feel the need of this gift. 00:13:15.52\00:13:17.76 We all need a savior, we need this for our brains 00:13:17.79\00:13:20.36 and the world is causing more stress than ever before. 00:13:20.40\00:13:23.57 It wants us to get away from this. 00:13:23.60\00:13:25.47 But think about it. 00:13:25.50\00:13:26.84 In the Bible, it's always been about worship. 00:13:26.87\00:13:29.87 You know, Daniel and his friends, 00:13:29.90\00:13:31.24 who did they worship? 00:13:31.27\00:13:32.61 You know, 00:13:32.64\00:13:33.98 even when Christ was here,
