It's nice to be here. 00:01:15.44\00:01:16.77 And the world's changed since I started practicing 00:01:16.81\00:01:19.67 27 years ago. 00:01:19.71\00:01:22.14 In the old days, we didn't talk much about nutrition 00:01:22.18\00:01:24.95 in treating heart disease and vascular disease at all. 00:01:24.98\00:01:28.35 But now it's one of the first things 00:01:28.38\00:01:30.05 we talk about to prevent disease 00:01:30.09\00:01:32.92 and also even use as a treatment 00:01:32.95\00:01:35.22 for these diseases, so it's very interesting topic. 00:01:35.26\00:01:37.46 But before we do that, 00:01:37.49\00:01:38.83 I want to just sort of review some things. 00:01:38.86\00:01:40.20 Yeah. 00:01:40.23\00:01:41.56 I was going to say you have a unique perspective. 00:01:41.60\00:01:42.93 Yeah. 00:01:42.96\00:01:44.30 A lot of doctors, all they have time 00:01:44.33\00:01:45.67 from their bosses is 10 minutes with the patients, 00:01:45.70\00:01:47.74 15 minutes with the patients, 00:01:47.77\00:01:49.10 so they're trying to do the best to understand 00:01:49.14\00:01:50.57 the symptoms, and write a pill, and out the door 00:01:50.61\00:01:52.21 the patient goes a lot of times. 00:01:52.24\00:01:53.98 But you promote the Ultimate Prescription. 00:01:54.01\00:01:56.61 What is that? 00:01:56.64\00:01:57.98 Let's review kind of your perspective. 00:01:58.01\00:01:59.35 I sort of want to review this 'cause this is good 00:01:59.38\00:02:01.38 that we all go back over this every 00:02:01.42\00:02:03.15 so often to get a good framework. 00:02:03.18\00:02:05.39 It's like a foundation we can build on, okay? 00:02:05.42\00:02:07.59 Yeah. 00:02:07.62\00:02:09.06 First of all, you know, I'd like to tell people 00:02:09.09\00:02:10.93 why they're sick. 00:02:10.96\00:02:12.43 And we've talked about it. 00:02:12.46\00:02:13.80 Unfortunately, each one of us has bad genes, okay? 00:02:13.83\00:02:17.20 And as we go through life, 00:02:17.23\00:02:18.57 depending on which gene acts up first, 00:02:18.60\00:02:21.30 then we have a symptom. 00:02:21.34\00:02:23.00 And what turns on these genes? 00:02:23.04\00:02:24.51 Well, some of our lifestyle habits. 00:02:24.54\00:02:26.27 You know, if you have heart disease, for instance, 00:02:26.31\00:02:28.44 and you smoke, and you have diabetes, 00:02:28.48\00:02:30.35 and you eat fatty foods all the time, 00:02:30.38\00:02:31.91 you don't exercise, 00:02:31.95\00:02:33.28 and everyone in your family had heart disease at age 70, 00:02:33.31\00:02:36.52 you might have heart disease at age 50. 00:02:36.55\00:02:39.02 Right. Yeah. 00:02:39.05\00:02:40.39 The genes get turned on, you have a symptom, 00:02:40.42\00:02:42.22 the symptom leads you to doctor, 00:02:42.26\00:02:43.79 and the doctor might treat you with angioplasty or stent 00:02:43.83\00:02:46.70 or medicines or whatever, okay? 00:02:46.73\00:02:48.93 Well, we try to prevent the aging process of the genes, 00:02:48.96\00:02:52.27 so that's why we're sick, 00:02:52.30\00:02:53.67 all the stressors and the bad genes 00:02:53.70\00:02:55.40 we have to begin with, okay? 00:02:55.44\00:02:57.24 And it's inevitable. 00:02:57.27\00:02:58.61 We're all going to come down with something sooner or later. 00:02:58.64\00:03:00.61 We want to keep it later, 00:03:00.64\00:03:02.01 and also, we want to have a good plan. 00:03:02.04\00:03:04.21 The next thing I'd like to focus patients 00:03:04.25\00:03:05.81 on is balance. 00:03:05.85\00:03:07.18 You know, what's the balance? 00:03:07.22\00:03:08.58 You know, there's a place for lifestyle changes, 00:03:08.62\00:03:12.12 you know, exercise, nutrition, good thoughts, 00:03:12.15\00:03:14.69 but that doesn't heal you, okay, that doesn't heal you. 00:03:14.72\00:03:17.29 There's a place for modern medicine, 00:03:17.33\00:03:19.09 and that helps your symptoms, 00:03:19.13\00:03:20.60 and it's great for acute problems, 00:03:20.63\00:03:22.76 but that doesn't make you perfect. 00:03:22.80\00:03:24.17 Right. 00:03:24.20\00:03:25.53 But what we want to bring people to 00:03:25.57\00:03:26.90 is the relationship with Christ because in that, 00:03:26.94\00:03:29.70 we can have healing, we can have peace, 00:03:29.74\00:03:31.47 we can have eternity. 00:03:31.51\00:03:33.48 So that's where we want to start 00:03:33.51\00:03:34.98 our focus on healthcare, 00:03:35.01\00:03:36.34 and that leads us to biblical prescriptions. 00:03:36.38\00:03:38.98 Well, what does a Bible say about health? 00:03:39.01\00:03:41.85 You know, one of the texts we talk about is "Come unto Me, 00:03:41.88\00:03:44.62 and I will give you rest." 00:03:44.65\00:03:47.96 So when we come to Christ through worship, 00:03:47.99\00:03:49.96 through that relationship, 00:03:49.99\00:03:51.53 everything starts to come together. 00:03:51.56\00:03:53.50 He gives us the power to make lifestyle changes 00:03:53.53\00:03:56.26 and realize that if we have bad genes, 00:03:56.30\00:03:58.13 we need a Savior, okay, 00:03:58.17\00:03:59.63 to heal us in His time, in His way. 00:03:59.67\00:04:01.94 And also we need appropriate use of modern medicine, 00:04:01.97\00:04:04.37 especially for emergencies, 00:04:04.41\00:04:05.91 you know, it's great place for that. 00:04:05.94\00:04:07.51 So that's sort of the framework I like to present, 00:04:07.54\00:04:10.91 and everyone has a little bit different pathway. 00:04:10.95\00:04:13.15 You know, it's not the same path 00:04:13.18\00:04:14.85 for Nick Evenson or for James Marcum 00:04:14.88\00:04:17.15 or for anyone, each one has a little bit different path 00:04:17.19\00:04:20.19 that we go on through life, 00:04:20.22\00:04:21.66 and it's based on these general principles 00:04:21.69\00:04:23.53 that help us. 00:04:23.56\00:04:24.89 So I think, that as we understand that, 00:04:24.93\00:04:26.83 that helps build us a framework 00:04:26.86\00:04:28.63 as we start talking about one of these areas 00:04:28.66\00:04:31.13 what nutrition is, 00:04:31.17\00:04:32.50 that's been something that's changed a lot 00:04:32.53\00:04:34.34 through the years. 00:04:34.37\00:04:35.70 You know, Dr. Marcum, I think that's a great perspective 00:04:35.74\00:04:38.04 because we think back, even with your practice, 00:04:38.07\00:04:40.48 all the patients that you treat as good a job as you do, 00:04:40.51\00:04:44.81 they're going to expire 00:04:44.85\00:04:46.18 at some point here on this earth. 00:04:46.21\00:04:47.55 Right. 00:04:47.58\00:04:48.92 And all the people that Jesus healed, 00:04:48.95\00:04:50.29 they all expired at some point as well despite, 00:04:50.32\00:04:52.92 you know, the touch of God's hand healing them. 00:04:52.95\00:04:55.32 And so focusing on the long-term healing, 00:04:55.36\00:04:58.23 the eternal healing is just that it makes so much sense. 00:04:58.26\00:05:00.46 And it also, when you focus on that, Nick, 00:05:00.50\00:05:02.83 there's health benefits in the short time. 00:05:02.86\00:05:04.87 Yeah. 00:05:04.90\00:05:06.23 I noticed that people that have that reassurance, 00:05:06.27\00:05:08.44 they don't have to fear, they don't have to be anxious, 00:05:08.47\00:05:11.61 they know where they're going, they know where their power 00:05:11.64\00:05:13.81 is coming from, they have this peace 00:05:13.84\00:05:15.74 that passes or understanding. 00:05:15.78\00:05:18.38 And when they learn this, 00:05:18.41\00:05:19.85 and it's something you grow with, 00:05:19.88\00:05:21.25 and it's something you improve on, 00:05:21.28\00:05:23.45 just like all aspects of health, 00:05:23.49\00:05:25.45 when you understand this and develop this, 00:05:25.49\00:05:27.86 you have health benefits as well. 00:05:27.89\00:05:30.19 And the same thing that's happened 00:05:30.23\00:05:31.66 with other aspects in health 00:05:31.69\00:05:33.40 and everything in health is changed. 00:05:33.43\00:05:35.36 I'm looking at the practice of modern medicine, 00:05:35.40\00:05:37.50 I was comminate. 00:05:37.53\00:05:38.87 You know, what we're doing with hearts has changed 00:05:38.90\00:05:40.80 so much over the last 10, 15 years. 00:05:40.84\00:05:42.80 Yeah. 00:05:42.84\00:05:44.17 We have technology that I never dreamed of 00:05:44.21\00:05:45.77 when we first started. 00:05:45.81\00:05:47.18 When we first started with heart attacks, 00:05:47.21\00:05:48.84 we would have a medicine that would dislodge the clot, 00:05:48.88\00:05:52.11 we call that a thrombolytic. 00:05:52.15\00:05:53.82 Well, now we don't even use those. 00:05:53.85\00:05:55.35 We go in and put stents in, you know? 00:05:55.38\00:05:58.05 Years ago, we used to put... 00:05:58.09\00:06:00.62 You know, pacemakers were totally different 00:06:00.66\00:06:02.26 than we're doing now. 00:06:02.29\00:06:03.63 Now we have a leadless system. 00:06:03.66\00:06:05.29 We have little pacemakers that look like ticks 00:06:05.33\00:06:07.20 that we put in the body. 00:06:07.23\00:06:08.70 Now we're putting in valves without cutting open the chest 00:06:08.73\00:06:12.57 or the same thing has happened in the nutritional world. 00:06:12.60\00:06:15.84 We're now seeing nutrition 00:06:15.87\00:06:17.67 as a way to treat cardiovascular disease, 00:06:17.71\00:06:20.41 when you have a symptom, 00:06:20.44\00:06:22.08 as well as a way to prevent the disease 00:06:22.11\00:06:24.61 in the first place so you don't need 00:06:24.65\00:06:26.45 the modern medicine. 00:06:26.48\00:06:27.82 Right, yeah. That's fascinating. 00:06:27.85\00:06:29.38 You know, the understanding that we have of... 00:06:29.42\00:06:32.02 Okay, here's the symptoms, 00:06:32.05\00:06:33.39 here's what's actually going on, 00:06:33.42\00:06:34.76 the understanding of better ways to treat, 00:06:34.79\00:06:36.32 that growth is just, it's amazing, 00:06:36.36\00:06:39.06 you know, the little tiny pacemakers 00:06:39.09\00:06:40.43 that you were talking about, 00:06:40.46\00:06:41.80 I think, technology is a fantastic tool. 00:06:41.83\00:06:43.33 But once again, it's not the eternal solution. 00:06:43.37\00:06:46.00 Right. 00:06:46.03\00:06:47.37 And that's the balance we want to focus people on, 00:06:47.40\00:06:49.24 you know, when to use this, when to use that 00:06:49.27\00:06:51.47 but also have that safe place 00:06:51.51\00:06:53.11 that they always can use as the base. 00:06:53.14\00:06:55.21 Yeah. 00:06:55.24\00:06:56.58 Well let's move on. 00:06:56.61\00:06:57.95 We'd like to answer viewers' questions 00:06:57.98\00:06:59.55 on this program, 00:06:59.58\00:07:00.92 and if you have a question, you can go to the website 00:07:00.95\00:07:02.28 HeartwiseMinistries.org. 00:07:02.32\00:07:04.72 There's a lot of resources there. 00:07:04.75\00:07:06.09 And one of them is you can submit 00:07:06.12\00:07:07.46 your health questions, 00:07:07.49\00:07:08.82 and one of Dr. Marcum's associates will get on 00:07:08.86\00:07:11.59 and try and steer you in the general direction 00:07:11.63\00:07:13.56 to where you can find some answers. 00:07:13.60\00:07:15.20 And we've got a question here that's been written in, 00:07:15.23\00:07:17.87 and the person is asking, 00:07:17.90\00:07:19.33 "What is the safest treatment or medication 00:07:19.37\00:07:21.80 for those with high blood pressure?" 00:07:21.84\00:07:23.51 Yeah. 00:07:23.54\00:07:24.87 Well, high blood pressure is a symptom 00:07:24.91\00:07:26.78 of cardiovascular disease but not a cause. 00:07:26.81\00:07:29.38 Right. 00:07:29.41\00:07:30.75 So when someone comes in with high blood pressure, 00:07:30.78\00:07:32.95 you know, I want to ask them, 00:07:32.98\00:07:34.32 well, why do they have high blood pressure. 00:07:34.35\00:07:36.62 Why? Okay? 00:07:36.65\00:07:38.32 There's many medicines that we can use, 00:07:38.35\00:07:40.62 and sometimes we use them right away 00:07:40.66\00:07:42.62 if the person's risk is high. 00:07:42.66\00:07:45.09 Let's say they're having aneurysm 00:07:45.13\00:07:46.90 or they're having a heart attack 00:07:46.93\00:07:48.26 or having some other big issue, 00:07:48.30\00:07:49.93 vascular issue, they've had a stroke, 00:07:49.96\00:07:52.27 then we might want to treat them 00:07:52.30\00:07:53.70 aggressively upfront with medications 00:07:53.74\00:07:56.60 until we can teach them other ways 00:07:56.64\00:07:58.47 and get to the cause. 00:07:58.51\00:08:00.01 Sometimes, it takes a while to get at the cause, you know? 00:08:00.04\00:08:04.61 So some of the common causes of high blood pressure 00:08:04.65\00:08:07.42 are too much salt in processed foods, you know? 00:08:07.45\00:08:11.19 Over the last 200 years, 00:08:11.22\00:08:13.52 you know, the way we keep foods 00:08:13.56\00:08:15.19 for longer periods of time is salt, 00:08:15.22\00:08:17.16 and we process them, 00:08:17.19\00:08:18.53 we put lots of sodium in the foods. 00:08:18.56\00:08:20.40 We actually don't need much sodium at all. 00:08:20.43\00:08:23.47 You know, they're recommending 00:08:23.50\00:08:24.83 about 2,000 milligrams of sodium, 00:08:24.87\00:08:26.84 even that's too much. 00:08:26.87\00:08:28.60 So when sodium is in the body, it brings water into the body. 00:08:28.64\00:08:32.91 When water comes into the body, 00:08:32.94\00:08:35.28 and the body wants to compensate. 00:08:35.31\00:08:37.65 And the way it compensates 00:08:37.68\00:08:39.01 is to turn on different hormones 00:08:39.05\00:08:40.52 and it tries to get rid of the water. 00:08:40.55\00:08:42.28 Okay. Yeah. 00:08:42.32\00:08:43.65 And in that process, the blood pressure goes up. 00:08:43.69\00:08:47.39 So just getting rid of salt can bring down blood pressure. 00:08:47.42\00:08:49.69 Do you think that the increased sodium intake 00:08:49.72\00:08:52.36 in much of our population here today 00:08:52.39\00:08:54.46 is due to the change in the way we live? 00:08:54.50\00:08:56.16 A lot of people don't have time to make their own food at home, 00:08:56.20\00:08:58.73 so they're eating prepackaged meals, 00:08:58.77\00:09:01.14 they're eating fast food, and that kind of thing 00:09:01.17\00:09:02.60 which has a lot more sodium in it, right? 00:09:02.64\00:09:04.01 Yes, lots of processed foods, and we change the way we eat, 00:09:04.04\00:09:08.08 so we eat lots of processed, we're eating... 00:09:08.11\00:09:09.91 You know, people still eat lots of animal products, 00:09:09.94\00:09:12.55 and that contributes. 00:09:12.58\00:09:14.62 Another thing that contributes 00:09:14.65\00:09:15.98 is we don't move around as much, 00:09:16.02\00:09:17.62 we carry extra weight. 00:09:17.65\00:09:18.99 So sometimes just moving around 00:09:19.02\00:09:20.86 and exercising, 00:09:20.89\00:09:22.22 that will lower the blood pressure. 00:09:22.26\00:09:24.79 So those are two things. 00:09:24.83\00:09:26.39 Third is a lot of people are under stress, 00:09:26.43\00:09:29.16 they're stressed all the time. 00:09:29.20\00:09:30.77 So people can lower their stress 00:09:30.80\00:09:32.60 so you want to in high blood pressure, 00:09:32.63\00:09:34.07 you want to find the reason why. 00:09:34.10\00:09:36.04 Some medical conditions can cause it. 00:09:36.07\00:09:37.94 One of the most common is sleep apnea. 00:09:37.97\00:09:40.31 That can cause high blood pressure. 00:09:40.34\00:09:41.68 You might be... 00:09:41.71\00:09:43.04 You're taking another medication 00:09:43.08\00:09:44.41 that causes the blood pressure to go high. 00:09:44.45\00:09:45.85 You might be having pain in your life. 00:09:45.88\00:09:48.05 Pain will cause the blood pressure to go high. 00:09:48.08\00:09:50.85 You know, certain fibroid abnormalities, 00:09:50.89\00:09:52.65 hormonal things can cause the blood pressure to go high. 00:09:52.69\00:09:55.36 Right. Sometimes, it's your nutrition. 00:09:55.39\00:09:57.29 You don't eat enough good things, 00:09:57.33\00:09:58.79 and the arteries become stiff and viscous. 00:09:58.83\00:10:01.76 So sometimes you're eating 00:10:01.80\00:10:03.13 the wrong type of healthy foods, 00:10:03.16\00:10:04.83 that can make it go high. 00:10:04.87\00:10:06.27 Well, what's some of the wrong type of healthy food? 00:10:06.30\00:10:08.10 Some people say, "I'm eating this healthy thing, 00:10:08.14\00:10:10.41 but it's processed." 00:10:10.44\00:10:11.81 Okay, now I was an example 00:10:11.84\00:10:13.31 that I used to eat corn chips too much and chips. 00:10:13.34\00:10:15.54 Sure. Yeah. 00:10:15.58\00:10:16.91 You know, and chips themselves are processed, 00:10:16.95\00:10:18.28 and they had sodium and lots of chemicals in it 00:10:18.31\00:10:21.22 that was messing up with my metabolism. 00:10:21.25\00:10:23.85 So the first thing in high blood pressure 00:10:23.89\00:10:25.69 is understanding the reason why, 00:10:25.72\00:10:28.02 and working on those things, 00:10:28.06\00:10:29.72 understanding whether they are at high risk. 00:10:29.76\00:10:31.93 If they are at low risk, then we have some time. 00:10:31.96\00:10:34.73 Understanding the risk, but if they are at high risk 00:10:34.76\00:10:37.17 and we have to start a medicine right away, 00:10:37.20\00:10:39.30 there's many different ones we can use and monitor. 00:10:39.33\00:10:42.20 One of the ones I like to use in the office 00:10:42.24\00:10:44.21 is called amlodipine or norvasc. 00:10:44.24\00:10:46.98 All that one really does is dilate the blood vessels. 00:10:47.01\00:10:49.54 It doesn't fix the problem, but it dilates them. 00:10:49.58\00:10:52.45 It doesn't have a lot of side effects, 00:10:52.48\00:10:54.55 but a lot of doctors, 00:10:54.58\00:10:55.92 they choose the blood pressure medicine 00:10:55.95\00:10:57.32 based on if there's other things going on. 00:10:57.35\00:10:59.82 Let's say you're stressed out 00:10:59.85\00:11:01.19 and that's making your blood pressure go high 00:11:01.22\00:11:03.02 or you've had heart disease, beta blockers, 00:11:03.06\00:11:05.09 that block's adrenaline, that's very helpful. 00:11:05.13\00:11:07.06 Okay. 00:11:07.10\00:11:08.43 Some of them, if you take too much salt in, 00:11:08.46\00:11:09.80 which most people do, 00:11:09.83\00:11:11.17 there's some that take salt out of the body. 00:11:11.20\00:11:12.53 They're called diuretics. 00:11:12.57\00:11:14.37 They take the salt out of the body for you. 00:11:14.40\00:11:16.54 But it doesn't make so much sense to give a diuretic 00:11:16.57\00:11:18.77 and person eats whatever they want. 00:11:18.81\00:11:20.14 Right. 00:11:20.18\00:11:21.51 You know, that's like banging your head on the wall, 00:11:21.54\00:11:22.88 "My head hurts, my head..." 00:11:22.91\00:11:24.25 Well, take some pain pills. 00:11:24.28\00:11:25.61 Yeah. Right. 00:11:25.65\00:11:26.98 So to answer this question, 00:11:27.02\00:11:28.35 if we can understand the reason why, 00:11:28.38\00:11:30.99 work on that and treat some natural ways. 00:11:31.02\00:11:33.12 Now we're talking about nutrition is a way to treat, 00:11:33.15\00:11:35.62 how would nutrition treat this, okay? 00:11:35.66\00:11:38.03 Yeah. Two ways. 00:11:38.06\00:11:39.39 First, foods to avoid that cause high blood pressure. 00:11:39.43\00:11:42.76 Fatty foods paralyze the arterial walls, 00:11:42.80\00:11:45.20 so you want to try to move fat out of your diet, 00:11:45.23\00:11:47.97 and processed foods, salt... 00:11:48.00\00:11:49.34 Okay. 00:11:49.37\00:11:50.71 Give some examples, what kind of fatty foods 00:11:50.74\00:11:52.07 are we talking about? 00:11:52.11\00:11:53.44 Oh, meat, eggs, chicken, cheese, fish, ice cream, 00:11:53.48\00:11:55.38 donuts, cookies, you know, those type of things. 00:11:55.41\00:11:57.08 All right. 00:11:57.11\00:11:58.45 Some tough one's right there, cookies. 00:11:58.48\00:11:59.81 They have some fat in them. Yeah. 00:11:59.85\00:12:01.52 Those type of foods, also the salty foods. 00:12:01.55\00:12:05.05 Anything that's in a package has salt in it. 00:12:05.09\00:12:07.66 For instance, people don't realize it 00:12:07.69\00:12:09.39 when you get a chicken, 00:12:09.42\00:12:10.76 not only you get the salt that's in the chicken 00:12:10.79\00:12:12.26 but they inject salt in the chicken 00:12:12.29\00:12:14.16 so the chicken weighs more, 00:12:14.20\00:12:15.73 so they can sell it for more money. 00:12:15.76\00:12:17.93 And it's processed, to keep things from swelling, 00:12:17.97\00:12:20.50 they put salt in it. 00:12:20.54\00:12:23.10 So you get way too much sodium in meat products, 00:12:23.14\00:12:24.47 you get... 00:12:24.51\00:12:25.84 Any package you look on it, and it says sodium. 00:12:25.87\00:12:27.84 So really, you want to get down to about a quarter 00:12:27.88\00:12:30.21 of a tea spoon of total salt a day. 00:12:30.25\00:12:32.31 That's not much... 00:12:32.35\00:12:33.68 A quarter of a teaspoon. Yeah, that's not much at all. 00:12:33.72\00:12:35.05 Yeah, that's not... 00:12:35.08\00:12:36.42 I was going to say I'll probably have much 00:12:36.45\00:12:37.79 in my oatmeal, so... 00:12:37.82\00:12:39.15 Yeah, you do not need much sodium at all. 00:12:39.19\00:12:40.52 And as you can do that, 00:12:40.56\00:12:41.89 you know, that's going to bring down your blood pressure. 00:12:41.92\00:12:43.26 So one of the things, nutrition, for blood pressure, 00:12:43.29\00:12:44.76 is avoid the things that cause blood pressure. 00:12:44.79\00:12:47.30 And there's some foods 00:12:47.33\00:12:48.66 that can help the blood pressure. 00:12:48.70\00:12:50.20 One of them is called the greens, 00:12:50.23\00:12:52.50 dark leafy greens have a chemical called nitrates, 00:12:52.53\00:12:55.77 they turn into nitricoxide, 00:12:55.80\00:12:57.41 and that makes the arteries get bigger. 00:12:57.44\00:12:59.84 And studies done, 00:12:59.87\00:13:01.21 something like flax can lower the blood pressure. 00:13:01.24\00:13:03.51 So there's two... Flax seeds? 00:13:03.55\00:13:04.88 Yeah. Everyone's heard about beets. 00:13:04.91\00:13:06.75 Beets are rich in nitrates. 00:13:06.78\00:13:08.38 We've now done the study on beets, 00:13:08.42\00:13:09.95 compared it with the medicine, 00:13:09.98\00:13:11.32 that lowers blood pressures well. 00:13:11.35\00:13:13.96 So eating more plants, especially beets and greens, 00:13:13.99\00:13:17.19 tend to lower blood pressure. 00:13:17.23\00:13:18.56 There's some teas that will lower. 00:13:18.59\00:13:20.43 Hibiscus tea has been studied, 00:13:20.46\00:13:22.06 that helps lower the blood pressure. 00:13:22.10\00:13:24.73 There's some other substances like watermelon 00:13:24.77\00:13:26.87 that might lower blood pressure. 00:13:26.90\00:13:28.84 But you got to eat way too much watermelon 00:13:28.87\00:13:30.91 to get any advantage. 00:13:30.94\00:13:32.27 You can't eat a whole... 00:13:32.31\00:13:33.64 Two water watermelons in a day to do that. 00:13:33.68\00:13:35.01 So watermelon's probably not reasonable. 00:13:35.04\00:13:36.64 But I tell my people to eat lots of grains, 00:13:36.68\00:13:39.35 throw some beets in there, 00:13:39.38\00:13:41.12 maybe some healthy teas with hibiscus in it, 00:13:41.15\00:13:43.89 and flax with your oatmeal every day. 00:13:43.92\00:13:46.22 This is a place to start 00:13:46.25\00:13:48.02 along with eliminating foods that cause it. 00:13:48.06\00:13:50.39 Get on an exercise program, 00:13:50.43\00:13:52.13 and then you might only have to take your medicine 00:13:52.16\00:13:53.96 a short period of time 00:13:54.00\00:13:55.53 until you can get at the cause of disease. 00:13:55.56\00:13:57.23 Now some people, 00:13:57.27\00:13:58.60 like we've talked about earlier, 00:13:58.63\00:13:59.97 have genetic disease, Nick, remember? 00:14:00.00\00:14:02.50 They do all the lifestyle changes, 00:14:02.54\00:14:04.31 they do everything they can, 00:14:04.34\00:14:05.67 and they still have just the bad genes 00:14:05.71\00:14:07.28 that cause blood pressure. 00:14:07.31\00:14:08.64 And for those people, 00:14:08.68\00:14:10.01 the risk of medicine might be worth the benefit 00:14:10.05\00:14:12.85 'cause high blood pressure 00:14:12.88\00:14:14.22 can lead to a lot of other damage 00:14:14.25\00:14:15.58 to blood vessels all over the body, 00:14:15.62\00:14:17.49 then the heart, and the kidneys, and the brain. 00:14:17.52\00:14:20.16 So lowering blood pressure 00:14:20.19\00:14:21.52 is a very important thing to do. 00:14:21.56\00:14:23.16 How to do it? That's what the debate's at. 00:14:23.19\00:14:25.29 Right.
