The following program presents principles 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 designed to promote good health and is not intended to take 00:00:02.73\00:00:05.13 the place of personalized professional care. 00:00:05.17\00:00:07.64 The opinions and ideas expressed 00:00:07.67\00:00:09.20 are those of the speaker. 00:00:09.24\00:00:10.64 Viewers are encouraged to draw their own conclusions 00:00:10.67\00:00:13.11 about the information presented. 00:00:13.14\00:00:15.58 An ancient Greek physician from the Age of Pericles 00:00:15.61\00:00:18.45 once spoke the words, 00:00:18.48\00:00:19.95 "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food." 00:00:19.98\00:00:24.02 This, of course, was spoken by the father of medicine, 00:00:24.05\00:00:26.42 Hippocrates. 00:00:26.45\00:00:27.79 But you might not have heard another of his quotes 00:00:27.82\00:00:29.82 in which he said, "Wherever the art of medicine is loved, 00:00:29.86\00:00:33.66 there is also a love of humanity." 00:00:33.70\00:00:36.03 And that's exactly our goal on today's program as we share 00:00:36.06\00:00:39.13 about the importance of optimal nutrition 00:00:39.17\00:00:41.47 in fighting some of the most common chronic conditions 00:00:41.50\00:00:44.47 attacking our world today. 00:00:44.51\00:00:45.97 Thanks for joining us here today 00:01:06.49\00:01:07.83 for the Ultimate Prescription, 00:01:07.86\00:01:09.30 a program dedicated to helping us 00:01:09.33\00:01:11.03 better understand God's design for our lives 00:01:11.07\00:01:13.67 and experience better health by following His plan. 00:01:13.70\00:01:16.87 I'm your host Nick Evenson here with Dr. James Marcum 00:01:16.91\00:01:19.44 for an excellent program today in which we'll be discussing 00:01:19.47\00:01:22.04 optimal nutrition for fighting chronic disease. 00:01:22.08\00:01:25.48 Dr. Marcum, welcome to the program. 00:01:25.51\00:01:27.18 Thanks, Nick. It's nice being here. 00:01:27.22\00:01:29.18 And we've got some big words we've thrown out there, 00:01:29.22\00:01:31.59 chronic disease, nutrition, 00:01:31.62\00:01:34.72 and even the name of the program, 00:01:34.76\00:01:36.29 Ultimate Prescription. 00:01:36.32\00:01:37.66 You know, ultimate means what's the best, 00:01:37.69\00:01:40.53 the highest you can get, 00:01:40.56\00:01:42.00 what's the highest prescription you can get in life. 00:01:42.03\00:01:46.07 And that's what we try to do here. 00:01:46.10\00:01:47.84 We try to show the balance, 00:01:47.87\00:01:49.24 you know, the place for lifestyle changes, 00:01:49.27\00:01:51.47 especially in treating chronic disease 00:01:51.51\00:01:53.91 and one of the lifestyle changes 00:01:53.94\00:01:55.54 is improving nutrition. 00:01:55.58\00:01:57.48 We try to point out the place of modern medicine 00:01:57.51\00:01:59.88 especially helping with acute symptoms, 00:01:59.91\00:02:03.08 so we can get at the chronic symptoms 00:02:03.12\00:02:05.65 to slow down some of this aging process. 00:02:05.69\00:02:08.16 But the ultimate prescription is neither one of those. 00:02:08.19\00:02:11.19 It's not eating right, it's not exercising, 00:02:11.23\00:02:13.66 it's not moving, no one has its place. 00:02:13.70\00:02:16.33 It's not doing bypass surgery, 00:02:16.36\00:02:18.20 and stents, and pacemakers, and knee replacements, 00:02:18.23\00:02:21.14 and all that modern medicine does, 00:02:21.17\00:02:22.70 though it has its place, 00:02:22.74\00:02:25.44 the ultimate prescription is when each one of us, 00:02:25.47\00:02:28.58 you know, can come into a relationship with Jesus. 00:02:28.61\00:02:31.48 He presents us as clean in front of God 00:02:31.51\00:02:34.28 when we worship and we're made perfect, 00:02:34.32\00:02:36.55 that's the healing we want to point people to, 00:02:36.58\00:02:39.15 that's the path of ultimate prescription 00:02:39.19\00:02:41.32 that we all want to be on. 00:02:41.36\00:02:42.69 Yeah. 00:02:42.72\00:02:44.06 So that's very exciting to me to have the ability to talk 00:02:44.09\00:02:47.40 and incorporate this into healing. 00:02:47.43\00:02:49.33 And I love that quote you used, where did you get that from? 00:02:49.36\00:02:52.30 Wikipedia. 00:02:52.33\00:02:53.67 Wikipedia, okay. 00:02:53.70\00:02:55.04 You can Google and find great things on the internet 00:02:55.07\00:02:56.74 provided that you find the true things. 00:02:56.77\00:02:58.71 So you weren't like reading a fable book 00:02:58.74\00:03:00.68 or something like that? 00:03:00.71\00:03:02.04 I was Google searching, yeah. 00:03:02.08\00:03:03.41 On Google sort of approach. 00:03:03.45\00:03:04.78 You know, Hippocrates, 00:03:04.81\00:03:06.45 when I graduated from medical school 00:03:06.48\00:03:08.25 at the University of Texas, 00:03:08.28\00:03:10.02 you know, he had a quote, "First, do no harm." 00:03:10.05\00:03:13.46 And that we all had to hear that quote. 00:03:13.49\00:03:15.72 So Hippocrates goes way back 00:03:15.76\00:03:17.49 and some consider him the father of medicine. 00:03:17.53\00:03:20.43 And the fact that he made that statement 00:03:20.46\00:03:22.56 so many years ago, 00:03:22.60\00:03:24.00 it's interesting how history in medicine repeats itself, 00:03:24.03\00:03:28.57 you know, years ago 00:03:28.60\00:03:29.94 some of the ways they treated high blood pressure 00:03:29.97\00:03:31.81 is very similar 00:03:31.84\00:03:33.17 to what we're coming around before. 00:03:33.21\00:03:34.68 So we come to the cycles, 00:03:34.71\00:03:36.04 you know, and it's very interesting, 00:03:36.08\00:03:39.08 you know, at the time of George Washington, 00:03:39.11\00:03:40.72 for instance, 00:03:40.75\00:03:42.08 you know, they treated him with bloodletting, 00:03:42.12\00:03:44.35 you know, they took out his blood. 00:03:44.39\00:03:45.82 And if you want that, 00:03:45.85\00:03:47.19 you weren't in the club, you know. 00:03:47.22\00:03:49.19 For years, dentists treated dental pain with cocaine, 00:03:49.22\00:03:52.43 you know, now it's not used for that anymore, 00:03:52.46\00:03:54.86 but something else. 00:03:54.90\00:03:56.23 Yeah. 00:03:56.26\00:03:57.60 And we think as late as the 30s, 00:03:57.63\00:03:59.00 they were using cigarettes as a treatment for asthma, 00:03:59.03\00:04:03.34 you know, go figure, you know. 00:04:03.37\00:04:05.64 And it's interesting how I think 00:04:05.67\00:04:07.24 as we look back on to the way medicine has evolved, and say, 00:04:07.28\00:04:10.21 "Wow, modern medicine did some great things, 00:04:10.25\00:04:13.21 but it really did some things that we didn't want to do," 00:04:13.25\00:04:16.52 you know, it didn't really get at some of the causes 00:04:16.55\00:04:18.65 that we're looking at. 00:04:18.69\00:04:20.09 And that's why I'm glad 00:04:20.12\00:04:21.46 we're talking about one of the chronic diseases, 00:04:21.49\00:04:23.73 diabetes, and how nutrition can be used to treat that. 00:04:23.76\00:04:27.76 That's right. 00:04:27.80\00:04:29.13 You know, before we get to the diabetes discussion, 00:04:29.16\00:04:30.87 you know, there's not too many physicians 00:04:30.90\00:04:32.87 that I've heard with this perspective 00:04:32.90\00:04:34.40 that you have about 00:04:34.44\00:04:35.77 the ultimate prescription being more of a relationship 00:04:35.80\00:04:37.41 than a procedure and medication. 00:04:37.44\00:04:39.57 Where can folks go to find out more 00:04:39.61\00:04:41.38 about this idea of biblical prescriptions 00:04:41.41\00:04:43.98 and following God's design for our lives? 00:04:44.01\00:04:45.71 Yeah, the website we have HeartWiseMinistries.org. 00:04:45.75\00:04:49.95 It has a lot of resources, a lot of books, 00:04:49.98\00:04:52.95 and books I've written on it including, 00:04:52.99\00:04:54.99 you know, The Ultimate Prescription. 00:04:55.02\00:04:56.62 Book by the same title? Yeah, book... 00:04:56.66\00:04:58.09 With this Bible study Biblical Prescriptions for Life, 00:04:58.13\00:05:01.76 and the best place they can go at all 00:05:01.80\00:05:04.80 is this book right here, 00:05:04.83\00:05:06.47 where they can actually read what God says, and pray to God, 00:05:06.50\00:05:10.11 and ask Him to lead in a life, and worship Him. 00:05:10.14\00:05:13.61 And we're developing for those 00:05:13.64\00:05:15.28 that aren't familiar with how to worship, 00:05:15.31\00:05:17.78 we're actually developing worship studies 00:05:17.81\00:05:20.22 where people can for 10 minutes a day 00:05:20.25\00:05:21.98 begin worship. 00:05:22.02\00:05:23.35 And we have things called worship warm-up, where it's, 00:05:23.39\00:05:25.79 you know, it's getting our body ready to worship, 00:05:25.82\00:05:27.82 so our worship could be optimized when we put... 00:05:27.86\00:05:30.36 Remember, it's not necessarily how long we worship, 00:05:30.39\00:05:33.29 but how well we worship. 00:05:33.33\00:05:35.23 And when we worship the true God, 00:05:35.26\00:05:36.83 there's physical 00:05:36.87\00:05:38.20 and chemical changes in our body 00:05:38.23\00:05:40.00 that helps our entire physiology 00:05:40.04\00:05:41.90 that gives us the power 00:05:41.94\00:05:43.27 to do some of these things we've been talking about 00:05:43.30\00:05:46.84 in Biblical Prescriptions for Life. 00:05:46.88\00:05:48.38 Yeah, we don't want to just go through the moment of emotions, 00:05:48.41\00:05:50.65 we want to have quality experiences, 00:05:50.68\00:05:52.51 worshiping and then learning about God. 00:05:52.55\00:05:53.98 Yeah, very exciting stuff. 00:05:54.02\00:05:55.58 Well, we are going to take a question 00:05:55.62\00:05:56.95 from the website here. 00:05:56.99\00:05:58.32 Someone writes in and ask a question 00:05:58.35\00:05:59.95 relating to diabetes. 00:05:59.99\00:06:01.32 I've been recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, 00:06:01.36\00:06:03.76 and I've heard that this may be reversible. 00:06:03.79\00:06:05.89 Is this true? And if so, how? 00:06:05.93\00:06:07.73 Yeah, type 2 diabetes is reversible 00:06:07.76\00:06:11.17 in many situations, 00:06:11.20\00:06:12.80 you know, some genetic cases, maybe not, 00:06:12.83\00:06:15.14 but many cases it is. 00:06:15.17\00:06:17.01 And I've had the privilege of working 00:06:17.04\00:06:19.04 with some of the best nutritionist 00:06:19.07\00:06:21.14 in the world today. 00:06:21.18\00:06:22.51 One of them is T. Colin Campbell. 00:06:22.54\00:06:24.35 And he has an organization called PlantPure Nation. 00:06:24.38\00:06:27.68 And I recently was able to answer 00:06:27.72\00:06:30.75 a similar question on his website, 00:06:30.79\00:06:33.76 so I think we should just watch that clip 00:06:33.79\00:06:35.26 that might give this answer in a nutshell. 00:06:35.29\00:06:37.99 All right, let's take a look. 00:06:38.03\00:06:40.00 I'm Dr. James Marcum. 00:06:40.03\00:06:41.36 I just wanted to spend a few minutes today 00:06:41.40\00:06:44.13 talking to you about type 2 diabetes. 00:06:44.17\00:06:47.24 A lot of people don't realize 00:06:47.27\00:06:48.80 that in the United States since 1990, about 29 million, 00:06:48.84\00:06:53.27 that's 29 million people have been diagnosed 00:06:53.31\00:06:57.11 or undiagnosed with type 2 diabetes. 00:06:57.15\00:07:00.45 And it's estimated 00:07:00.48\00:07:01.82 by the Centers for Disease Control 00:07:01.85\00:07:04.09 that by mid century, 00:07:04.12\00:07:05.59 one in three will have type 2 diabetes. 00:07:05.62\00:07:08.82 Why is this such a major problem? 00:07:08.86\00:07:11.23 'Cause type 2 diabetes leads to many other complications, 00:07:11.26\00:07:15.00 heart attacks, strokes, 00:07:15.03\00:07:17.03 damage the blood vessels in all the body 00:07:17.07\00:07:19.33 which could cause kidney disease, 00:07:19.37\00:07:21.67 neuropathies, bad joint circulation, 00:07:21.70\00:07:25.07 and the list goes on and on. 00:07:25.11\00:07:27.48 Our current treatment really focuses 00:07:27.51\00:07:29.81 on treating the blood sugar 00:07:29.84\00:07:31.41 doesn't really get it to the cause. 00:07:31.45\00:07:32.78 And there's been lots of medicines out there. 00:07:32.81\00:07:35.28 And when you talk to people, they say, 00:07:35.32\00:07:36.85 "Well, let's start this medicine." 00:07:36.89\00:07:38.82 They don't really focus on the cause of disease. 00:07:38.85\00:07:42.26 I want to tell you about the cause of disease 00:07:42.29\00:07:45.19 and put this thought in your mind, 00:07:45.23\00:07:46.93 so if you know someone 00:07:46.96\00:07:48.46 that's diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 00:07:48.50\00:07:50.23 or you have it yourself, 00:07:50.27\00:07:51.67 getting at the cause is always better 00:07:51.70\00:07:54.27 than just treating symptoms, 00:07:54.30\00:07:55.97 especially when we have a devastating disease 00:07:56.00\00:07:58.34 that could cause you to have a heart attack, 00:07:58.37\00:08:00.31 or stroke, or some other organ in the body that goes poorly 00:08:00.34\00:08:04.35 just because it doesn't have a good blood supply. 00:08:04.38\00:08:07.45 The majority of type 2 diabetes is caused by our lifestyle. 00:08:07.48\00:08:12.95 And that lifestyle consist 00:08:12.99\00:08:14.52 of eating the wrong types of food 00:08:14.56\00:08:16.83 and not exercising enough. 00:08:16.86\00:08:18.96 What are the wrong types of food? 00:08:18.99\00:08:21.03 Well, a diet that's high in animal protein, animal fat, 00:08:21.06\00:08:25.80 and processed foods. 00:08:25.83\00:08:27.77 This through a bunch of complex mechanisms 00:08:27.80\00:08:30.27 make blood sugar increase, 00:08:30.31\00:08:32.94 damaging our entire body, including our blood vessels. 00:08:32.97\00:08:36.68 It only makes sense 00:08:36.71\00:08:38.05 if we want to solve this major health problem 00:08:38.08\00:08:39.61 that we have to go 00:08:39.65\00:08:40.98 to a whole food plant-based diet. 00:08:41.02\00:08:43.59 We have to get animal protein, animal fat, 00:08:43.62\00:08:47.09 processed foods out of our diet. 00:08:47.12\00:08:49.36 Many studies have shown that if you go 00:08:49.39\00:08:50.99 to a whole food plant-based diet, 00:08:51.03\00:08:52.83 you can reverse type 2 diabetes in a short period of time. 00:08:52.86\00:08:56.80 Are there other contributors to type 2 diabetes? 00:08:56.83\00:08:59.47 Absolutely, sometimes you can have your pancreas destroyed 00:08:59.50\00:09:02.54 by toxins and it doesn't make insulin, 00:09:02.57\00:09:04.87 a whole food plant-based diet 00:09:04.91\00:09:06.47 helps address that problem as well. 00:09:06.51\00:09:09.08 So I want to encourage you, 00:09:09.11\00:09:10.45 if you know someone that has type 2 diabetes 00:09:10.48\00:09:12.31 or if you might have it, 00:09:12.35\00:09:13.72 get at the cause of disease 00:09:13.75\00:09:15.18 and just don't treat the symptoms. 00:09:15.22\00:09:17.29 Move away from a diet that's high in protein, 00:09:17.32\00:09:19.49 high in fat, and high in processed foods, 00:09:19.52\00:09:22.09 and go to a whole food plant-based diet today. 00:09:22.12\00:09:27.13 That's some great advice there. 00:09:27.16\00:09:28.50 Just to summarize, it's caused by lifestyle. 00:09:28.53\00:09:30.73 Type 2 diabetes is caused by lifestyle, 00:09:30.77\00:09:32.53 primarily lack of exercise, 00:09:32.57\00:09:33.90 and too many processed foods, right? 00:09:33.94\00:09:36.10 And then it's reversible 00:09:36.14\00:09:37.47 through a whole food plant-based diet. 00:09:37.51\00:09:39.54 Is that about right? 00:09:39.57\00:09:40.91 Yeah, that's about right. 00:09:40.94\00:09:42.28 And in looking at the research, 00:09:42.31\00:09:43.98 we know that when a person brings 00:09:44.01\00:09:45.85 too much fat in the body, it's stored. 00:09:45.88\00:09:49.08 And all of this extra animal fat and animal protein, 00:09:49.12\00:09:52.29 we really weren't designed to handle, 00:09:52.32\00:09:54.52 it puts stress on the body. 00:09:54.56\00:09:56.66 Specifically when these fat receptors get clogged up, 00:09:56.69\00:10:00.16 you know, these fat, you know, in our body gets clogged up... 00:10:00.20\00:10:03.83 I didn't mean fat receptors, 00:10:03.87\00:10:05.20 I mean insulin receptors get clogged up by fat, 00:10:05.23\00:10:08.74 the blood sugar can't get into the cells. 00:10:08.77\00:10:11.04 So your pancreas makes more insulin, 00:10:11.07\00:10:13.78 which, so the pancreas starts running out of insulin, 00:10:13.81\00:10:16.38 the sugar can't get into the cells, 00:10:16.41\00:10:18.31 so all sorts of other metabolic processes occur. 00:10:18.35\00:10:22.38 It starts breaking down other energy sources 00:10:22.42\00:10:25.49 because the blood sugar's so high, 00:10:25.52\00:10:27.12 you start going to the bathroom a lot, 00:10:27.16\00:10:29.06 you urinate a lot, you get tired a lot, 00:10:29.09\00:10:31.63 the blood vessels become damaged, 00:10:31.66\00:10:33.40 you have lots of medical problems 00:10:33.43\00:10:35.16 that can progress over time. 00:10:35.20\00:10:37.17 This is why type 2 diabetes is so devastating, 00:10:37.20\00:10:40.27 and it's estimated that one in three by mid century 00:10:40.30\00:10:42.74 in the United States will have this condition. 00:10:42.77\00:10:44.84 So it sounds like 00:10:44.87\00:10:46.21 we're talking basically about a little traffic jam going on 00:10:46.24\00:10:48.08 your insulin receptors. 00:10:48.11\00:10:49.44 The fat's blocking it, so the insulin can't get in 00:10:49.48\00:10:52.15 creating more insulin. 00:10:52.18\00:10:54.42 What's the situation here? 00:10:54.45\00:10:55.78 Whole food plant-based diet 00:10:55.82\00:10:57.15 can reverse it most of the time, 00:10:57.19\00:10:58.52 but I don't think we hear that often enough. 00:10:58.55\00:11:00.46 What is modern medicine doing to treat this? 00:11:00.49\00:11:01.86 Yeah, well, a lot of, you know, we're just now finding out 00:11:01.89\00:11:04.99 about a lot of this good nutritional therapy 00:11:05.03\00:11:07.60 that's out there. 00:11:07.63\00:11:09.60 And now that is getting out there, we're realizing that, 00:11:09.63\00:11:11.83 you know, you go to the doctor, 00:11:11.87\00:11:13.20 and he's going to hear about this, 00:11:13.23\00:11:14.70 and, you know, one of the things 00:11:14.74\00:11:16.07 I'm very curious is that pancreas still making insulin, 00:11:16.10\00:11:18.17 okay? 00:11:18.21\00:11:19.54 If the pancreas is making insulin, that's great, okay. 00:11:19.57\00:11:23.11 Then that means you have a chance 00:11:23.14\00:11:24.48 to reverse this. 00:11:24.51\00:11:26.45 So you want to get improve the situation, 00:11:26.48\00:11:28.58 and by getting fat off the body, by exercising, 00:11:28.62\00:11:31.65 studies have shown that you can reverse this. 00:11:31.69\00:11:33.66 There's a couple of good websites 00:11:33.69\00:11:35.22 if you might be interested in reversal, the details of it. 00:11:35.26\00:11:38.33 One of them is pcrm.org, 00:11:38.36\00:11:42.13 that's Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.org. 00:11:42.16\00:11:46.74 And also the plantpurenation.com website 00:11:46.77\00:11:49.80 has some very good information 00:11:49.84\00:11:51.77 about giving you the nuts and bolts 00:11:51.81\00:11:53.74 if you're interested in doing this, 00:11:53.78\00:11:55.41 of course, under your doctor's supervision 00:11:55.44\00:11:57.75 'cause not everyone should be doing this 00:11:57.78\00:11:59.41 in different types of ways. 00:11:59.45\00:12:00.92 But it is possible to reverse this condition. 00:12:00.95\00:12:04.22 Is it easy? No. 00:12:04.25\00:12:06.02 'Cause, you know, everyone, 00:12:06.05\00:12:07.39 you know, people, unfortunately they go to the doctor 00:12:07.42\00:12:09.52 and the blood sugar's high, 00:12:09.56\00:12:10.93 and it takes time 00:12:10.96\00:12:12.66 to educate people on nutrition and exercise. 00:12:12.69\00:12:15.73 And unfortunately many people don't want to do it. 00:12:15.76\00:12:18.57 They go, "It's too hard, I can't do it." 00:12:18.60\00:12:20.84 But you know what? 00:12:20.87\00:12:22.20 I've learned, if you'll start one step at a time, 00:12:22.24\00:12:25.14 and move slow, and say, 00:12:25.17\00:12:26.51 "Listen, it doesn't have to be done in a day." 00:12:26.54\00:12:28.61 Now some people want to do it all at once 00:12:28.64\00:12:30.25 'cause they want to feel better right away 00:12:30.28\00:12:31.95 'cause they have so many symptoms. 00:12:31.98\00:12:33.55 But a lot of times, type 2 diabetes, 00:12:33.58\00:12:35.52 they don't feel too bad at first 00:12:35.55\00:12:37.35 until they show up with a heart attack, 00:12:37.39\00:12:39.12 renal failure, neuropathy or something major. 00:12:39.15\00:12:42.12 So that's why this is a hidden process 00:12:42.16\00:12:44.09 that's going on in our bodies. 00:12:44.13\00:12:45.79 It's sort of a silent assassin for many years 00:12:45.83\00:12:48.93 until all of a sudden an organ's damaged permanently. 00:12:48.96\00:12:51.93 And that's what we want to prevent 00:12:51.97\00:12:53.34 and we know worldwide 00:12:53.37\00:12:54.87 as we've begun eating the westernized diet, 00:12:54.90\00:12:57.94 all this processed foods, all this animal fat, 00:12:57.97\00:13:00.98 animal protein, we've created a problem in our own bodies. 00:13:01.01\00:13:04.41 And I want to, you know, I got a great example 00:13:04.45\00:13:06.98 little bit later that I want to talk about, 00:13:07.02\00:13:09.35 about ways that we... 00:13:09.38\00:13:10.72 One person that I know, 00:13:10.75\00:13:12.09 a patient that I had actually reversed this. 00:13:12.12\00:13:13.96 All right. 00:13:13.99\00:13:15.32 Well, stay tuned, 00:13:15.36\00:13:16.69 we're going to be back after a short break 00:13:16.73\00:13:18.06 where Dr. Marcum is going to talk to us 00:13:18.09\00:13:19.43 about a case study of a patient 00:13:19.46\00:13:20.80 who actually reversed type 2 diabetes 00:13:20.83\00:13:22.60 just using a whole food plant-based diet. 00:13:22.63\00:13:24.27
